Developer: Wii U graphics are “on par with PS3, maybe better”

Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed developer thinks the Wii U's graphics are similar to PlayStation 3's.

It seems that we can’t go a few days without hearing about the Wii U specs and hardware. The latest bit of news comes from Sonic & All Stars Racing developer Sumo Digital. Speaking to Eurogamer, the British developer revealed that it believes the Wii U’s graphical power is on part with the PlayStation 3, “or maybe even better”. This is quite an odd statement, since we’ve heard from other developers that the Wii U graphics are much more advanced than the current generation consoles. At this point, it appears that it all comes down to the talent of the developer and how much performance they can manage to squeeze out of a particular system.

Sonic racing Wii U
Sumo Digital also confirmed that the Wii U version of Sonic & All Stars Racing will support Mii characters in-game. The Wii U GamePad tablet screen will be used as a rear-view mirror, or alternately, for Remote Play. The Remote Play feature on the Wii U allows the game to be played on the tablet controller alone. Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed will be out on the Wii U this Fall. It’s a Mario Kart-like arcade racing game that’ll support both cars, boats, and even planes. Check out the first trailer of the game.

Eurogamer seems to have misquoted this. According to ign, sumo said the game is on par with ps3.

I read eurogamer all the time, it is my go to game site, have to say dissapointed with there website hitting headline story though.

    • deSSy2724

Just read the Darksiders 2 for Wii U articles on Eurogamer site and comments/likes….

They said, Wii U graphics wont be better or same like PS3/xbox360….. then explain me, why this game (Darksiders 2) looks the same on my high end PC and PS3? same textures and not good shadows (only resolution and vsync settings on PC, nothing more)…. u see, just bunch of stupid PS3/xbox 360 fanboys on Eurogamer site. Darksiders 2 is a obivious port for PC, so its for PS3 and ofc Wii U….. xbox360 is native = real cores, only 1 same hardver, easy to code on, similar to PC (easier to port from xbox to PC insted of PC to xbox/consoles).

Most ports are bad for some reason or looking the same like native system or even worse…. examples: some Xbox 360 ports for PC are not optimized for PC or PS3 is worse looking when comparing to Xbox 360 (Mass Effect 3 etc) and we know that PS3 is overall stronger than Xbox360: http://s18.postimage.org/h40hycbrd/aaaaaaa.jpg

      • Garic

Sega NEVER said the Wii U hardware is on par with current Gen. They said their game ( Direct Port) is on par with current Gen. Please read the first paragraph of the story people, because the title is very misleading. It even said SO in the first PARAGRAPH.

i Thought Wii U daily is smarter then this, Please read the first paragraph in Eurogamers story and it will clear all the confusion.

        • SuperShyGuy

it was the original title Eurogamers used “Wii U graphic on par with the PS3 and 360″ a basher only needs that.

  • D2K

    Here we go again….. :(

    • El CaRaS1

It’s ok D2K these developer dont know how to harnest the power of the multi cores just like in the start with the ps3 wiiu is a nexgen console and is supirior from these current consoles need not worry these time around nintendo realised how important specs are these time around!

      • D2K

I know, but it’s a broken record I just wished stop playing. At this point I think people just do this for attention.

        • Garic

READ the title people. Then read the FIRST paragraph. Lots of Journalist sites even CREDIBLE ones like Eurogamer can mislead you into clicking the story. The story said the game is on par with ps3/360 games because its A DANG port. But the title misleads you into thinking the Wii U HARDWARE is on par with 360/ps3.

  • ³²¹Aaron¹²³

Go Wii U! Your da best!

  • bigha6900

first of all sonic & all star is a port we all know that ports are only 50% of what the console can doso fu%k you sega we don’t need you

  • Ekayode7

We all Know that as soon as Wii u
releases ppl will make comparison videos but we all know the WINNER
    WII U!!!!!!!!

  • !!!!!!!

thats weird a mirror thats just a bad way of using the tablet plus this is a lie the u is powered by rainbows
    first,……not

  • fedster

its good that they r including mii’s too, finally a company that doesnt just see nintendo for the new things theyve made now

    • shadowfan2z

They used Miis in the first one….

  • LordFenix

really i am happy if its just a lil better than 360 or ps3… im just eh how stale gameplay has gotten

  • ck1x

Its so stupid because we’ve seen how much better AC3 looks on WiiU over the PS3, so its kind of à pointless statement for him to be making!

  • Juan

Too bad… they should be WAY better…. Its next gen… Well be behind as soon as the PS4 and 720 come out. 3rd party will lose support and then well get 10 games a year…

    • Someone

You have light memories, Wii use the same specs from gamecube, because of this it have lower graphics, also the initial price of ps3 to have this power of today is 800 dollars, also too that nintendo always have better graphics, wii is a exception, why should you ask? because the gamecube atracted casual gamers so they decided to make a casual videogame. This Generation of games to nintendo is important because ds and wii almost ultrapassed the ps2, the ds only have a diference of 2 million. So the wii is not a failure and is impossible to ps3 and xbox 720 to have a ten yers better graphics… unless they cust 2000 dollars…

      • Someone

        Sorry for my english

    • PKUltima

Well if I remember correctly, when the ps360 came out their graphics were only slightly better than previous gen consoles. Look at the games on the PS3 now, they look amazing compared to 6 years ago and develepors are saying that the Wii U is very easy to develop for which means graphics will get a lot better a lot faster than it did on the PS3. BTW some developers didn’t know how to tap into a systems power.

    • rafael

It would be nice to live in such a simple world, but i think things are a little more complex then this…

  • Nintendude789

Yay! Miis racing with Sonic! :D-d

  • Leeroy

Yea at this point it must just come down to talent

  • SuperShyGuy

Well I still plan on getting one. But I have to say all of this new is lowering my expectations.

Bright side is if Nintendo manages to prove them wrong I can be surprised.

  • Ed

At this point, I dont care about it’s power, I just want juicy details! Price, date, packins!

  • jman4102

it looks cool i might get it

  • gPadWatcher

Sounds to me like a cool racing game for those who are fans of Sonic… and (at the same time) it makes us more determined and waiting patiently for a new Mario Kart title for the U.

  • AE

As someone suggested within the Eurogamer comment section, the Eurogamer article was misleading to begin with. The Eurogamer article was quoting an Ign article that was stating the graphics of the game “Sonic & Allstars Racing” was on par or a little better. It was not stating the Wii U system is on par with the PS3. In fact, the developer states that they haven’t even figured out what the system truly is capable of.

I like coming to this website, but please do some digging so that misinformation doesn’t continue to be spread.

    Original article:
    http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/08/13/sonic-all-stars-racing-transforms-on-wii-u

    • james

This is what all the fuss is about, very misleading article. Thanks for posting the link! The original article is much better than the one posted here.

The game is “easily on a par [with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions],” says Lycett. “We’re still very much getting to grips with what we can make the hardware do [...]. So it’s hard to really answer that right now, but yeah, I think once we’ve had a bit more time finding our way around it, chances are you can look to do things that you may not be able to do before.”

      • LolWatTurtles

This site is always putting misleading articles up. It’s like when Crytek was quoted saying “A Wii U Version of Crysis 3 is CURRENTLY not in development.” Someone on WiiUDaily just wrote “No Crysis 3 Wii U Version.” I don’t think they do any research sometimes at all.

  • TheBoldman67

Cool, this should hold me off until a real Mario Kart comes out (considering I also do like Sonic)

  • Dazz

Well the wii u will lose on the ps4 the wii u have the most kids game i play but not good.

  • Frankensavior

Who gives a damn? All I care about is if the game is fun. When I play the PS3 I don’t sit there and over analyze the graphics. I enjoy the game play, and the story. Same thing will apply when I get the Wii U, and the PS4. Everything can go back to 16 bit for all I care. As long as I’m having FUN.

  • Portus

Im not really bothered about graphics as long as we get those multi plat games better graphics or not as good graphics

  • Nintyfan

I’m tired of all this graphics/power talk comparing the other consoles. I think the media is making it seem like the Next gen of Xbox and PS3 will have major major graphical improvements. Yeah, sure it’s not even going to be noticeable to the typical gamer. It’s not going to much change from the current gen already. So don’t expect to much on the next gen, it’s not going to be all that exciting when XBOX 720 OR PS4 OR WHATEVER LAUNCHES!

    • Neonridr

come on, didn’t you know. When the 720 and PS4 launch, games will suddenly look like your TV has become a window and you are looking out into reality! That’s how good the graphics are going to be in 2013 or early 2014… :P

  • Captain Potato

For first generation graphics to be on par with the PS3′s 3rd generation graphics speaks volumes about what DEDICATED 3rd party developers will be able to achieve on the Wii U! Still can’t wait to see any 1st Party game other than what we’ve seen already…

  • darkemotion

It sound like they are unsure. Is it on par or is it better? You would figure, someone who does this for a living should know better.

  • XDLugia

Of course it is way more powerful than the PS3. At least the shadow engine because the PS3 has the history’s worst shadow effects. Even the PS2 has better shadows than the PS3.
You will notice this the next time you see a PS3 graphical comparison video.

  • LyingTuna

When I saw knuckles in the one picture, I thought it was mighty the armadillo… Now I’m all disappointed!!!

  • Ninty1

I think the Wii U graphics are better than PS3 because the Wii U is next gen

    • Alienfish

Define ‘next gen’ please. My kids represent the next generation in my bloodline, but I don’t necessarily think that they are a major improvement over me.

      • ninjabake

You knee what he meant don’t be a smartass. In gaming the next Gen is the next generation of consoles and each console in this next Gen can do things its predecessors could not. This holds true in EVERY generation of gaming. Now as far as graphics go I don’t think the Wii U will look leaps and bounds better than 7th Gen consoles, but I don’t believe the next PS or Xbox will either.

But that’s all speculation we have no evidence until about 2 years into the life cycle when devs come into their own whilst programming.

Graphics should always just be a perk. A nice shiny brand new car is completely useless if the thing can’t run. No different than a game with great graphics and horrible GAMEplay.

        • Alienfish

Just reality checking here. ‘Next gen’ doesn’t always mean better in every way even in video games. That term carries certain connotations that many would agree don’t apply to WiiU, such as a massive leap in graphics compared with what is already on the market. There is no massive leap here, and the term ‘next gen’ is too readily used.

          • ninjabake

Noon needs a reality check these are VIDEOGAMES were talking about something insignificant to your real life as far as affecting how your life will play out.

We all know what next Gen is and yes I agree not every next Gen system is “better” than the previous iterations but again that’s all options and is extremely subjective. To this day I believe the PS1 was the best console but I have no proof of that, that’s simply my opinion. I understand that others may feel differently but that’s the beauty of choice in life, everyone can have their respective favorites.

As far as graphics and power go, as I said before it doesn’t mean as much to videogame enthusiasts especially ones(such as myself)who still to this day play Retro systems and still enjoy them. So they have jaw dropping graphics? No. Are they fun? Absolutely and that’s all that matters to me.

You may like a game solely on graphics but you would without question be in the minority. Most gamers, and I mean TRUE GAMERS, play a videogame strictly to enjoy themselves and not to over analyze and criticize.

You can keep on naysaying that’s fine but my question to you is: why continue to use your time to bash something you don’t like rather than enjoy what you do like? Your missing the essence of gaming here.

But whatever ill continue to game and have fun and you can continue to dislike and criticize what you please, its a free country and you have that right.

          • mo

            STFU!

      • joe

Dude, That’s the funniest thing I ever read on this site…or maybe anysite…that’s a great line…

    • Saucy17

So the wiiu launch graphics are better than ps3, that means 1month after it’ll be way past that, it needs time just like ps3 and xbox360

    • Luck

wii u is current, old gen hardware with a nice new way to play controller. It’s the same for x360/ps3 what was wii for gc/ps2/xbx – it’s just slightly better hardware with more ram. But despite all of this – it’s fun to play and I like it.

I don’t know why some people (fanboys?) still don’t get it. It’s funny whenever devs talk about wii u graphic there is comment by news author how those devs are stupid, because news author has much more “knowledge” than real developers.

There is a reason why Nintendo still didn’t publish official hardware specs. There is reason why all games for wii u looks like ps3/x360 with some slightly updates. 60fps @ 1080p games? Forget. PS3 or x360 can do that too but almost no one use is because there is no performance. Unreal 4 – no way. If yes it would be the same for pc/next gen what UE3 for mobile is for pc/current gen (defective product). No adding that wii u has to an additional screen to render. Just still live in a dream. At least I’m realist but still I love my wii and will love my wii u.

And yeah, my English sucks and just rate down that comment – as usually

      • Collected

And where is your evidence for anything you just said. You give as much speculation as gaming sites; even though developers such as Epic games, Gearbox, etc have said that the Wii U has better graphics, run Unreal engine 3 without upscaling like PS3/Xbox 360, and even possibly could run some version of unreal engine 4.

Do you know better than them, or do you have a magic crystal ball that sees the future, or maybe just helps with the cynicism.

      • ninjabake

I’m a realist as well and being a realist you have to realistically look @the situation MS and Sony are in. Numbers don’t lie, they aren’t turning a profit (especially Sony) on their current systems. They sold them at a loss. You think they’re gonna take a chance by making super computer systems for $500 next Gen? I doubt it.

Why do you think the Wii was as underpowered as it was? Nintendo was already taking a gamble with the motion controls and didn’t make as much on the gamecube so they didn’t invest in the most advanced tech seeing that its main selling point wasn’t power anyway. It makes sense from a business perspective.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the next Xbox continues to capitalize on the success of Kinect and focus more on refining it rather than invest heavily on power with no sure-fire sales (remember the kinect sold 18 mil while the 360 console has sold 67mil) the casual market is much bigger and Microsoft knows this. Banking on it next Gen is a smart business move but will it work? Who knows, we shall see…

Anyways I’ve gone completely off topic LOL sonic racing looks awesome and ill be getting it.

      • deSSy2724

cmon, u know nothing about specs…

        1. UE4 is scalable, Epic said that and that means from smartphones to high end PC… EOD!

        2. Wii U and additional screen to render… hmm what if the system uses WHDI? do u even know what WHDI stands for? 1ms lag and 30 meters away. Maybe im wrong with this… but who knows?

        3. Yes, Wii is not much more powerful than GC…. PS3/Xbox360 are much more powerful than Wii, then explain me… why does AC3 looks better on Wii U when comparing to PS3? why does Darksiders 2 looks the same on all platforms, including HIGH END PC? (yeah, u read it right…its native xbox360 game portet to other platforms)

        4. 1080p 60 FPS and PS3/xbox360? PS3 bluray and 1080p, yes!

But, games in 1080p? i lold so much, most games are less than 720p or 720p and cca. 30 FPS and honestly, u dont really need 60-1000 FPS, i have a high end PC and most games run more than 60 FPS (80-120+ etc… exeptions are Crysis 1-2, Metro 2033, F1 2011 or something similar…. rare games), but i play with VSYNC ON because i own a FULL HD 60Hz monitor.

        • deSSy2724

          and last…

          5. I dont care about yours thumbs up and thums down… i didnt TD you. I have more important things to do.

    • XDLugia

      No sh*t!

  • Alienfish

No, WiiU is more powerful without a shadow of a doubt. The processor is newer tech that can handle tasks much more efficiently and the GPU is taking care of two screens here while still pumping out 1080p on the big screen in some games. There isn’t any doubt in my mind that WiiU is a more capable system than any other console on the market right now. Why can’t the media just shut up and accept that?

  • tekkentagU

as started above it is about how much talent the developer has in how to tap into the Wii U graphics.
Quite frankly, I feel like if the graphics look the same as PS360 then that’s a lazy port on behalf of the developer, because they should look better on Wii U.

  • Non-Specific ActionFigure

Nope, it way better, PUT ON YOUR GAMING GLASSES!

  • john

how can it be the same if wii u supports full 1080 p some of these developers from japan are retarded i bet the american dev will show them how to render the graphics engine.

    • mo

      Wow your dumb!

  • Enigmatic

We have heard all sorts of things about the Wii U’s hardware. The common theory is that it is marginally stronger than the current gen home consoles.

Come now, Alisson, about that link. They never said that the Wii U was “much stronger”, they simply said that the Wii U was “definitely stronger”.

Also, you made a spelling mistake on line four dear. :)

    • EvanescentHero

      Don’t be patronizing.

  • ninjabake

The graphics will be more advanced than PS3 but it’ll take some time to harness all that power especially for devs who are unfamiliar with it. Just be patient we’ll all see that the Wii u will produce some eye candy.

  • Firebro

i wouldn’t say its a mario kart like racing game. I would call it a Diddy Kong Racing kind of racing game.

  • Jc

Graphics this… graphics that…Developers leave me more confused :S!!!

  • Nintendude

Remember how Xbox360 and PS3 games were? It’s probably going to be the same type of thing with the Wii U, graphics in games wouldn’t be much of a difference, but as the years go on they get better and better which each game.

    • Enigmatic

You obviously don’t know enough about how game developing works, or anything about cross threading.

  • ck1x

Why do Sony fans troll Nintendo related articles is what I really want to know?
If there are such amazing games out on PS3 and Vita then you guys should be playing those and not disagreeing with every comment about a future Nintendo console.

Notice the word “easily”. Nothing to be worried about folks. The Wii U can easily handle the same graphics without breaking a sweat.

Developer: ColecoVision is more powerful than Wii U, with a superior Super Action Controller!

    • joe

Colecovision ROCKED! Roc ‘n Rope, Bump and Jump, Venture, Lady Bug, Smurf………Great games.

  • SteampunkJedi

I think graphics have reached a peak. I mean, at some point the eye doesn’t care if there’s a few more pixels thrown in there. The processing power is what can improve, to create bigger and more interactive and realistic games. But perhaps people just mean graphics AND processing when they say “graphics.”

  • SlashBull99

this guy almost sounds as dull minded as Patcher, no one dosent care about ported games graphics, it varies and depends on what engine they develop the game on. The Wii U has a massivly high grapical capibillities and it depends on what they use and if it is on par with PS3 grapics it obviously was not a great engine. These devs need to start doing their homework before talking retardation, we all know they are out for the next gen Xbox and PS to surpass teh Wii U but it won’t happen.

  • Shamash9

I think he’s speaking specifically about Sonic racing’s visuals vs the PS3 and not about the how the graphical prowess of each system relate to each other in general. This point has probably been elucidated in these comments already but making it makes me feel smart despite being lazy.

  • Anonymous

I see that there aren’t many Nintendo haters posting this time. Are they left speechless after this? Haha

  • 88MilesPrower

So we’re essentially talking about how the 360 launched. Those launch titles looked like Gamecube games. Wii U launch titles look like PS3 games. I’d say we’re in a pretty good place right now.

Just for kicks and giggles, this guy did an in-depth comparison of the Wii U vs the 360 and PS3. Keep in mind that this was based off of the older rumored specs of the Wii U and the final dev kits are quite a bit more powerful than these specs. He even took the specs of the Wii U DOWN a notch and the PS3 and 360 specs UP a notch just to prove his point.

  • Ben

The Wiiu graphics are on par with the PS3′s? Great that means the WiiU will have great looking games now and greater looking games in the end if its cycle.

  • EponaVsCrimsonLoftwing

Hmm, I wonder if it’s only on par or better because of the way the game uses the gamepad. It figures that they wouldn’t put in too much effort to up res the game from current gen, being that this is a new system with no install base yet, so they probably didn’t put in too much effort to go the extra mile. Throw in the rear view of the gamepad, as well as the maps and remote play, the system could be hitting a wall from being used inefficiently, as they aren’t fully accustomed to the new hardware yet, and outputting this much stuff. Overall, I feel like this isn’t too much of a challenge for the Wii U, but considering the time the developers have had with it, and that it has no real install base to motivate extra programming, I’m not surprised it looks the same, or slightly better. I’m actually surprised that it’ll be any better, aside from frame rate. If they did make it look a bit better than good on them. Sega did more than they had to. Glad to hear they aren’t giving us a half effort job :)

  • goginho

wow people! They are on par if you don’t use the Wii U’s full potential ..jeez

  • HEAD IN HEAVY HANDS

industry based biased anti nintendo alert in coming, il translate i think my comment of lies will have an effect on wiiu sales just like saying nintendo is doomed stopped the wii and wii is casual stopped nintendo….

its embarrassing to read this ,as you know inside his a sad fanboy watching sony sink like titanic SO SAD

  • Neonridr

Could you imagine how much better a game could look if the Wii U didn’t have to stream all that information to the second screen? Not that I would suggest they not do it as I am super excited to see what uses developers are going to find for the gamepad. Just food for thought at how much more raw processing power would be at their disposal if there was nothing on the gamepad screen.

  • joe

Here’s the absolute truth of this matter. The WiiU is going to be powerful enough to impress pretty much anyone. Nintendo has it’s awesome franchises that NOBODY else has, and IF the potential of the WiiU pad is realized by the gaming public AND others, the Wii U is going to the biggest console…………..since, well, the Wii……..

    • Death

      *raises glasses* True story.

This report has been repeatedly taken out of context like the Tekken devs comment.

He wasn’t saying that as an estimate of its maximum capability.

He was saying that as what he has seen so far. He knows that it is at least as powerful. The gaming news media has spent it to look like he stated that it isn’t much better.

  • The_Lump
