Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Wii U screenshots

Capcom recently revealed that its upcoming Wii U RPG Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate would run in 1080p, to the delight of many future Wii U owners. Now Capcom has released the first screenshots of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and it’s very clear that there have been some huge improvements in the visuals compared to the original Wii game. And just as expected, the screenshots are in 1080p resolution.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate screenshot

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is an RPG from Capcom and will be a continuation of the original Wii game, which was released in 2010. It’ll feature much of the same content, plus additional features with an expanded story. The game will be released in March 2013 on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Check out the first screenshots below.

The WiiU will be doing graphics like that, but not in this game as it is essentially a wii/3ds port with high res textures and some filters thrown at it. It will be rendered at 1080p and will most likely be at a solid 60fps, and the loading times are apparently way shorter than the wii version, but this is not the game to benchmark the console.

If you want to get a guess at the WiiU’s power, BO2 will be rendered at proper 1080p while the PS360 will make do at about 600p (or 576… something like that). That is WAY more pixels, and you’re comparing end of life consoles against a launch title port.

    • gamemaster

i would be more happy if they did one on last story :D

Its like the pc’s final fantasy 11 and the xbox 360’s verision how its basically upscaled with a dash a pretty utilizing the shaders in the gpu and ram but I think it should be called 1080p conversion. I believe the Ps2 made the Psx games look a little better and maybe little like that not sure what you guys think? Oh and I dont brown nose any console but I love nintendo and shaders in the gpu more =’s awesomeness. For example the xbox 360 has more shaders then the ps3 and if you can tell if your looking ;)

        THIS LOOKS BEAUTIFUL

  • Ben

As Xenoblade running on Dolphin proved the formula: [top caliber Wii Game + 1080p = WOW!!!!]

Adding dynamic shadows certainly doesn’t hurt.

    • Troll patrol.

You aint seen nothing yet . Xenoblade immoraly upscaled on dolphin to 1080p is not even scratching the surface of what it is possible . You are seeing cleaned up 480i/p , that is all .

Capcom confirmed to Famitsu magazine That Monster Hunter Ultimate has been Re textured in NATIVE 1080p . Its not upscaled like everybody was saying , its native .

So all those doubters , come at me brah!!!!!

      • The incredible sandwich

when i read this i made you sound japaneses

      • wat

Dolphin doesn’t “immorally upscale.” Maybe you know what you’re talking about, but I have to correct you so other people don’t get the wrong idea. Upscaling = simple stretching of low resolution picture over a bigger resolution screen. Of course, upscaling algorithms exist to attempt to make the picture look nicer, but it will look no where as nice as “re-rendering” which is exactly what Dolphin does. Re-rendering adds extra pixels, allowing your game to look sharper and less jagged. It’s not just a “cleaned 480p/i”; it’s true 1080p.

Now, you talk about textures so I’m just giving you the benefit of the doubt that you do know what you’re talking about. Textures are simply images overlayed on a 3D model. If the game was made for 480p, the textures will only be outputted at 480p, upscaled to 1080p in Dolphin.

There is nothing “immoral” about how Dolphin outputs games. 480p textures overlayed on a 1080p 3D model that are far away in the game will look just as good as 1080p textures that are far away in the game. This is probably why Xenoblade Chronicles looks gorgeous in Dolphin; the main beauty of the game is the vast landscape, not the characters. Textures up close will obviously suffer from the low resolution textures.

A Dolphin retexture project for Xenoblade is also underway to fix the 480p texture problems.

TL;DR Point of the post – Dolphin outputs true 1080p. Textures are ouputted at 480p, upscaled to 1080p. Edges will look smoother, allowing textures to really show themselves properly.

        • Nintenlord

Sry but unless they are remaking the game dolphin is not doing real 1080p

          • wat

do you know what “real 1080p” is? the textures might not be 1080p, but the 3D models itself are; thus the textures overlayed on top will look somewhat better.

        • Troll patrol.

Dolphin is immoral , because its morrally wrong to Emulate games . You should be supporting the developers by buying the game , not just emulating it , thats what contributes to amazing games like xenoblade never being localized.

Emulating wii games is pathetic and wrong ,And no , its not true 1080p , its a load of upscaled bull shit that barely looks better than the 480p output .

Tech nerds like to think it somehow magically looks drastically better , but it doesn’t at all .

Xenoblade looks fine in 480p , no need to emulate it . Why not emulate old games rather than emulating games that were released in 2012 ?

          • wat

I gave the benefit of the doubt, but obviously you don’t know how Dolphin works at all. A simple google search would tell you how the whole thing works, but that is fine.

I’m not going to disagree with you on your view that it’s “immoral” to emulate games because it’s very easy to pirate games. But I sincerely doubt you’ve ever used Dolphin.

  • 7upland

wtf? Ps2 graphics. Nintendo you have failed again

    • tronic307

Lolwut? Think you’re too cool to wear your damn glasses?

    • TheUNation

7upland… you FAIL!!!!!! Nintendo has absolutely nothing to do with that game. Capcom does and it’s a Wii U and 3DS exclusive. The graphics are from the Wii U running at true 1080p in full high definition. Haveaseat, Diet Pussy!

    • TheUNation

Nintendo has absolutely nothing to do with that game, 7upland… only Capcom does. And you’re STILL wrong! The graphics are from the Wii U version running at true 1080p high definition. Consider yourself EXPOSED!

      • TheUNation

Wii U Daily, please delete my second post. My apologies.

    • Nintedward .

      For gods sake ……………….

This is a port of a 3ds game which was ported from the wiiu . It is NOT and I repeat NOT in anyway a showcase of Graphics for wiiu . Its a wii/3ds game rendered in native 1080p….

Also , if the ps2 even tried to run the original wii version of MH tri , it would implode then explode and then throw up on its self .

      • NINTENDOCOOL

As a loyal monster hunter fan i must correct you. Yes this is a port of the 3ds version, but in no way does it have anything to do with the wii. I know you are saying it for the sake of the wii u and yes they could have done better, but that just insulted me. :( I think you were referring to tri. Not tri ultimate. Tri was a great game, but is out of date and has nowhere near the amount of content in this game. I know you meant no harm though.

        • Nintedward .

Monster hunter ultimate is monster hunter tri with more content. It isnt a new game by any stretch of imagination . Its EXACTLY the same as monster hunter tri but with about 90% extra content .

Whats good about Ultimate compared to tri is

          A = a ton of extra content.
B = Amazing 3ds to Wiiu link up capability
          C = Retextured in native 1080p .

Thats it really , other than that its a port or a ‘remake’ . But it looks absoloutly 9/10 amazing anyway :) .

          • NINTENDOCOOL

Well yeah I know. Iv’e pathetically researched everything about the Japanese version before it came out…I’m sad to say I know pretty much all that’s in it, not cuz its bad but because I need a life. I’m all about the gameplay and i like both the wii u and monster hunter. Hopefully they make another one from the ground up on the wii u, that’d be really good. And thank you for understanding, I knew what you meant. But yeah for anyone who is new to this, this is a fantastic start. Besides skyward sword I haven’t bought any other wii games after tri came out because i got over 600 hours out of it. The funny thing was that i found tri by accident and I must say I’m hooked. Yea “600” and still increasing hours…with about half the content of this game or less. So I’ll say This will be money well spent :)

    • Falcon PAWTCH!!!

      A wild troll appeared!

    • deSSy2724

its not true and actually its a game made first on Wii aka ported from Wii to Wii U…. so, u fail!

      • Death47

Actually fro 3ds to wii u. It’s a port of the 3ds game with online added.

    • Nko Sekirei

u failed u cactus banger troll u dont read articles really well do u mr patrick star

    • Nintendo Power (Star Mission)

      @7upland
PS2 Graphics? Nah, Wii U is using a GPGPU Which is more powerful. Do some research. Acording to Unity Software, Wii U can support Derex 11 ( Sorry for my spelling Iam tired)

    • Havoc87

      Shut up Meg!

  • Johny

    OH GOD YES !!!!

  • that guy

Their making good progress on the graphics, just hope they can slap in some anti-aliasing, and maybe add some polygons to the character and monster models so this game can show the “hard-core” gamer what the Wii U is all about.

  • Mamuta

Pretty awesome, but I actually think Pikmin 3 looks slightly better graphically. which is weird because Pikmin is only 720p.

    • Nintedward .

Resoloution does not = graphics . If pikmin is native 720p and upscaled to 1080p , then it will look virtualy the same in terms of resolution , apart from milimetre thin jaggies which you have to use a telescope to see …

Pikmin 3 takes advantage of the wiiu’s graphical capabilities , whilst Monster hunter ultimate takes advantage of the 3ds version of a wii port.

Its just been retextured and made native 1080p , so this will look like a perfect wii game , not a wiiu game …

      • Nintedward .

All in all , Monster Hunter ultimate won’t even utilize 1/5th of the wiiu graphical ability . The EXACT same game is on 3DS . Only on wiiu its Full HD …..

The graphics are good , but the gameplay is what defines Monster Hunter .

        • frank (3dsFC=5155-3120-0417)

Yeah, could you explain the gameplay to me a bit? What kinds of games is it similar to? The article says RPG, but I want a bit more than that. What does “monster hunter” mean in the game? What’s it rated? What are the major gameplay mechanics? Compared to other similar games, is this better or worse? I know I could just look it up on wikipedia, but I want an opinion from people who have really played a decent amount of this series to tell me.

          • Death47

Well, I put in well over 600 hours on tri, so I know what I’m talking about. It’s not a traditional turn-based rpg. It’s played in real time. No lock on system or any of that rpg stuff. You level up in the game, but not in the traditional sense. You don’t get more powerful or more defense just by leveling up. Instead, you get new monsters to hunt and the ability to make their weapons and armor (each armor has its own resistances and defense–each weapon has its own atk and sometimes element or status). I believe the titles have all been rated T. Similar games (like Xenoblade and the last story) are also good games, but I would say the mechanics of Monster Hunter put it over almost every Rpg I have ever played. Most reviewers rated tri very good, but some complained that it wasn’t a traditional rpg and it didn’t have a lock on system. Not to mention some people found each hunt to be too long (Jhen Mohran took 20 minutes to beat at the quickest. Usually it took half an hour). And the game has a considerable learning curve, especially with mastering all the weapons. In tri there were 6 or 7 weapon types while in ultimate, they bring back bow, gunlance and dual swords. In ultimate, there are 3 ranks. Low, High, and G rank. In tri there was only low and high. G rank is considerably difficult and requires patience to beat. But online, you will have up to 4 people on a quest to team up and take down your enemy. Offline, it’s just you and the shakalakas (helpers). There are many monster species in the game (In tri there were around 20-30 while in ultimate there are 70-80) Over half of those monsters are boss monsters. If you haven’t tried the series yet, I would recommend getting Mh3U when it comes out. However, you should play offline a bit first, so you can get used to the game a bit. If you can’t wait that long, get a used psp and buy monster hunter freedom ultimate. Get tri if you don’t mind that the servers (for online) are shutting down when the new one comes out. However, I think tri is the best in the series. It’s one of the only games that got online right on the wii. Overall, monster hunter is an amazing series, and you should really try it out.

          • Nintedward .

Here in UK monster hunter tri for Wii is rated 16+ and is known by elite gamers as one of the most hardcore games on earth , where you can spend in excess of 1000 hours grinding out characters.

You explore huge stunning landscapes slaying monsters as you go obtaining weapons and armour and other stuff to make your guys stronger and better .

Its a truly excellent game ! Have a look at some youtube footage

          • frank (3dsFC=5155-3120-0417)

Thanks guys, I might just pick this up! Would you recommend wii u or 3DS version, or would it be worth the $100 to get both?

          • Nintenlord

Is a more open phantasy star online but instead of weapons drop you get materials to build it

          • Death47

If you can, get the wii u version, as it has over half the content the 3ds game has just because of online :D
But if you can get both, do it. They have 3ds-wii u connectivity. You can play your character offline on the 3ds when you’re on the go. Then, you can transfer your character back to the wii u and play online with the same character.

      • Billy

That makes more sense if it was retextured as a WII GAME. They should have just gone a step further and added HD textures for the WII U lol

        • Nintenlord

          They did ad new textures

        • Nintedward .

They have done …….. Native 1080p textures . CONFIRMED . Not a big deal , i’m sure it was easy for capcom.

        • theaquacharger

Just because a model is HD doesn’t mean it looks the best. An HD model can still jave jagged edges, stretched textures, and many other issues. Capcom made HD models then did a quick wash over to make it look like the Wii version did on a 480p TV as opposed to stretched out a lot on a 1080p TV.

  • TheCruzKing

Stunning to me is pikmin 3, this looks good. I’ve never played a monster hunter game before so I plan on starting with this one.

  • Trev

This game looks awesome, I hope monster hunter 4 I eventually released in the USA!

    • NINTENDOCOOL

Who knows we might have to wait 4ever. Sorry I had to say that. Lol

    • Ledreppe

Are u on a mobile? Cause I’ve had trouble with videos sometimes on mine.

  • Glenn

WOW! It looks absolutely gorgeous…the Wii U is a beast!! :)

  • Britton

Some pics look great. Others look like crap. But they are just screenshots, I am sure the in-game resolution will be MUCH better.

  • Chris

Meh, looks like Capcom are cutting corners… again ¬_¬

I still believe the Wii U is a powerful beast but this game is like a March 2013 released game, Capcom could at least made some effort.

  • swic11

Game looks much better than the Wii screens that I have seen, though I wish they would have updated the engine, would have made it that much better. Still picking it up when its released though.

  • D2K

The fact the it is an upscaled 3DS game takes a lot of bite out what I was going to say. Looks okay for a Wii game, but if you have seem 1st-party Wii games in 1080p (Dolphin EMU) like Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, etc. this looks ‘okay’ at best.

However like I said, because it is an upscaled game it gets a pass. I hope that they give a ground-up approach for the next one.

  • Elite

Really wish they would have an updated engine for the wii u version

  • Elite

If i where to get this do i need the play the previous monster hunter titles?

    • Nintenlord

No but it could make it easy to understand the gameplay

    • NINTENDOCOOL

Nope. There’s no story to these, except for MH4 but that won’t come out for an eternity in the U.S. You just pick up an play really and work your way up. Get it.

  • Neonridr

Wait until a Monster Hunter game is built from the ground up for the Wii U. This is like saying how all those HD remakes that show up on for the PS3 / 360 don’t look as good. Well of course not, they are taking a port of something and slapping on some nicer textures. While I believe Capcom is going a bit beyond just that here, this game was built for the Wii and then converted, so corners were cut at the beginning to accomodate the Wii’s limitations.

  • Cugno the Swiss

So, is this like Monster Hunder Tri, just MOAR?
Because I never played Monster Hunter…

    • Lord Carlisle

Basically. Same game, just updated graphics, extra features, etc.

      • theaquacharger

        A lot of extra features.

        • Death47

          About 90% more ^^\

          Biggest mh game to date.

  • SteampunkJedi

This looks like quite a fun game. But is it just me, or are the screenshots jut in half?

…Right click the images and open in a new tab i guess. I guess I’m not allowed to put links on here. Sorry wii u daily i didn’t know.

      • Kav

Right click on it, copy the url and open it in a new tab to view the full pic

  • Billy

It’s not true HD 1080p. It’s just upscaled. It still has 3DS graphics with a bit more Anti-alias going on, some bloom, better lighting etc. But the textures are still low-res because the game just wasn’t made on Wii U hardware, it was only ported to it and then upscaled.

It looks cool don’t get me wrong and the resolution may certainly play in 1080p but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was made in 1080 as the textures and polygons don’t reflect that. Maybe in a few years we’ll get a Monster Hunter game that was built from the ground up to run on Wii U, now that will be impressive. :D

    • Nintenlord

Your glasses need a update cause it has ben told by all the gaming prees is native

      • Nintedward .

        XD!!!!!!

    • Nintedward .

For the millionth cabillionth time , CAPCOM have confirmed that they have retextured the entire game in Full And Native 1080p . It hasen’t been upscaled in any way , shape or form . :) .

I know what you mean , it will just look an extremely crisp , bright and shiny wii game …..

A monster hunter built from ground up for wiiu would blow this game away graphically no doubt . But this is native 1080p , lol

      • Nintenlord

We are being attack by the thumb troll

        • Nintedward .

Forget about him , he’s an ass :P

  • dawnofmorning

Can’t wait to play this. I’ve played almost every MH game, and being able to use the gamepad will be awesome!

  • kingtendo

i dont call it a wiiu anymore, the new name for the console is the nintendo ”fearless”

i gave it that name becuase i feel it’s a system that isn’t afraid of trying new thing’s.

iv got alot of people calling it the ”fearless”.

  • Master Awesomeness

I must be quite frank, to say that it actually doesn’t look good at all, it seems to be the quality of twilight princess. I’d be expecting more from a game for wii u.

    • Shulololol

its a port from tri with extra content, what do you expect, Crysis 5? lmao

      • Death47

        It’s a port of a 3ds game.

        • Death47

Why the downvotes? LOL look it up. It’s a direct port of the 3ds game Monster hunter 3 G. It was never released in the west. Mh3u is the western version of 3g. It just has online added. The 3ds version is essentially a DIRECT port in english. So yeah, it’s a 3ds port. Look it up.

          • Nintenlord

Is cause a port and a remake is not the same

          • Death47

            But it’s NOT a remake.
It’s a port of the 3ds game with online.
Exact same monsters and weapons/armors. etc.

            It’s not a remake of 3g. LOL
Half of you probably don’t even know what 3g is.

          • Nintenlord

            A know what 3g is a phone signal(joke)

  • she’s so hot

who care’s about the graphic’s,dont you see what we are acting like? abunch of sony and xbox fan’s

nintedo fearless is about fun, playing game;s is ab out fun. not no fuckin graphic’s.

    • Nintenlord

Now we have both grphics and gameplay instead of just gameplay something the competition mostly lacs

  • john carlos

I guess the wii u is alright, i mean the storymode of this game is okay but the graphics is what matters + i dont think wasting money on the wii u is worth it because it uses to much battery ,im better off playing the ps3 since the controllers are rechargeable, may I include that it looks exactly like the wii , and i already got a psp vita with more advanced graphics.

  • Maverick-Hunter

this looks awesome I had 150+hours on the wii version and I have no problem giving a 200+ hour dedication into the wii u version *adds to must get list*

  • john carlos

  • Nintendofan4life

Seriously? These games can’t be anymore ridiculous… such a weak system… I’m really disappointed.

    • john carlos

i think they could be more ridiculous, just look at there passed consoles, what with these childish mario games, monster hunter… please. I rather play call of duty since its for grown men and has high quality graphics except on the wii and wii u .

      • Master Awesomeness

According to activation, bo2 has better resolution than other versions.

      • NintendoYOU

I loved COD4 but now they are just rehashing the same crap how can you keep paying a chunk of money for the same game over and over again every year… I know they have new story’s and all. But everyone tells me its all about the multiplayer. Witch its practically the same thing accept for a minor tweek here and there. I’m just curious of your opinion due to what turned me off the series.

I don’t think you can say your a grown man if you cant accept what other people find entertaining. People have different tastes and I think you need to explore your horizons of gaming and step out from the corridor that is “the COD franchise” other games and platforms do exist please find time for them.

  • Kaizokuman

People if you want MH4 you MUST buy this game. Do it now.

  • Master Awesomeness

Its just that its a game that doesn’t really appeal to me.

  • Master Awesomeness

John Carlos, grow some brains. They can be used to do many things, and without them you are just anti-nintendo.

  • nintendofreak

i wonder if u can cut monster head like in d oder monster hunter

  • Daniel

I remember when Nintendo revealed the WiiU would not upscale original Wii games. I thought to myself, ‘watch how they try to re-sell old Wii games with improved resolution’…..and already Capcom have beat them to the punch. This is such a lazy attempt to cash-in.

    • Garic

The wii u version has dedicated servers and everyone knows that its not cheap hosting those servers.

  • MYCOXEN

    OK

  • Hater Of Zer0

I’m honestly conflicted on picking this game up, not because it’s a bad game, but because I had a very bad experience with people online in Tri. Ultimately it led to me unable to physically play the damn game anymore because it just wasn’t fun anymore. :(

    • *.*

Lmao you got burnt by a 14 yr old girl online didnt you ahahaha!!

      • Hater Of Zer0

Nope, I created a hunting clan that had 150+ members, and my second-in-command stole it from me when I was offline. Since he was HR 999 and I was HR 115, everyone flocked to his side. Like I said the game wasn’t fun for me after that… :(

I’m not TOO impressed with the updated graphics(I though they would be better honestly), but it IS better than the Wii version, so no complaints here. I’m gonna get it, because I don’t have the Wii one. Hopefully for all you MHTri players, there will be a data transfer, unless you want to re explore for a new round of good ol’ times! Looks better than alot of launch titles from PS3 and Xbox 360, which I think is saying ALOT, considering it’s just Wii graphics updated to 1080p.

Hopefully the US and UK don’t get ignored with the sequel, on any console for the games sake, but I’m sure if it does it will come out on Wii U.

    Can’t(but has to) wait!

There are some graphical misconceptions in this thread. Here are some thoughts.

–The game is not “retextured in 1080p” because that doesn’t make sense; it does appear that many (but not all) of the textures themselves are of higher resolution than before (taking advantage of more RAM and more storage medium space), but saying it’s been “retextured in 1080p” is misleading — 1080p is a screen resolution describing 1920×1080 screen pixels, which has nothing to do with the dimensions of any individual texture applied to individual polygons. It is likely there will be “HD Remakes” on the Wii U that feature precisely the same textures that the Wii, Gamecube, 3DS, or even Dreamcast or N64 version of the game had (and hopefully some others that feature improved textures like this game). It’s hard to tell without motion what kind of Mip-Mapping is being utilized (none, tri-linear, RIP-mapping, anisotropic, etc.).

–The game appears to be in full 1080p — 1920×1080 (2 megapixels in camera-speak). This is encouraging, but…

…there’s no word on framerate (locked at 30 fps, locked at 60 fps, varying, is there any sort of motion blur, is it V-synced, etc.), and…

…the lack of anti-aliasing is a little disappointing. 1080p with no anti-aliasing is roughly the same number of internally-rendered pixels as 720p with 1×2 anti-aliasing (1280×1440 for horizontal-only super-sampled anti-aliasing like TLoZ: OoT 3D on 3DS when you turn off the 3D effect), and the 720p with 1×2 FSAA might have looked better, although…

…there’s definitely something to be said for rendering directly to the exact 1:1 native resolution of most of the HDTVs out there and sending the signal over HDMI (and it should be said that just sending the signal digitally instead of analog like the Wii and utilizing the greater output color depth the Wii U uses would improve the game even if textures had been straight ported).

–Any word on playing the game solely on the Gamepad? It should be able to to do 2×2 FSAA at 854×480 on the Gamepad from a pixel perspective.

–I don’t know enough about the original to tell whether polygon models have increased counts (either procedurally in real-time or simply as more complex meshes), but this is again a measure that has nothing to do with screen resolution / 1080p

–Still, this is encouraging as far as the possibility of future HD remakes on the system. Zelda Trilogy (WW, TP, SS), Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mario 3D Trilogy (Sunshine, Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2), and others. I’d settle for a straight port of all polygon and texture assets, running at 720p with 1×2 FSAA or 1080p without, pegged at 60 fps, playable either in legacy mode (pro controller or Wii mote), with the Gamepad + TV, or with the Gamepad only.

Ya I think that’s why it’s not as impressive as I thought it would be. When I heard there would be a remake I expected a whole entire remake which would inslude the whole retexture and polygon stuff. They could do it, they just want to get the game out in time for those of us who can’t wait to play. I agree with you on the HD collection bundles instead of individual purchases, unless there’s someone that can’t afford every single game at once. I just hope that if they do it will be DLC on the eShop. They already have a Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii, but they could re-release it(re-re-release for metroid prime 1 and 2). If they would have had enough time, they could have just re-opened their file that contains the whole game to edit, and then add more polygons where they though neccessary, but I think textures would take more time. I really don’t know how complex it is…

I love how so many people are downvoting at informational and neutral comments. Lmao.

Is this game like zelda or like final fantasy with realtime combat system??

    • Shane

It is real time combat like Zelda, but I’m not sure if it has the targeting system. Look up the Wii one, it will be mainly the same game, except extra features, and updated visuals/audio. Hope this helps.
