Nintendo: publishers set play limits on Wii U demos

Wii u demoLast week it was revealed that Wii U demos will have a play limit. Game demos on the Wii U eShop will be playable anywhere from 5 to 30 times, where after they’ll be blocked. However, it was a bit unclear how this limit was set, but most expected that it was a publisher decision.

Now Nintendo has confirmed that individual publishers set the limits on their demos. For example, the newly released Rayman Legends demo has the limit set to 30, while Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed has a limit of 15. FIFA 13 can only be played 10 times before the demo expires.

Setting play limits on demos is a relatively new thing, and was generally popularized by Nintendo with the 3DS, and now this extends to home consoles with the Wii U. It will be interesting to see if the other console makers follow in Nintendo’s footsteps once their new machines hit the market next year.

They must think people will continually play the demo and not buy the full game. (Joking)

actually, that could happen, depending on the demo length…

Well, Sonic Unleashed’s demo was WAAAAYYY better than the full game! x)

Demo limits don’t really bother me.  But at least now people can’t say it’s Nintendo setting limits when it isn’t.

Are you kidding? It’s the Internet. Of course people can still say it. We just now know that they’re not correct.

Ah, yes.  I forgot; of course they can still say it xD…silly me.

does this mean all the demos on the eshop will have limits?

    • Martin Kearney

Yes, but if it’s a really popular game like Rayman Legends, It’ll have something like 30 tries. Best part about it is that if I don’t like the game, use up the tries and delete the demo. Easy and simple. I don’t mind.

    Makes sense.

There is a time limit? Otherwise I will keep my wii u on until I finish the game….

Not really much of an issue (mainly only important to people who want to use it to bash nintendo)
How many playthroughs does a person really need to decide if they want a game or not?

and I think the upper limit may be higher than 30. FF:Theatrhym’s demo on the 3DS is unlimited.

Play limits are sort of dumb, if set too small.  For instance, Fifa 13 is only 10.  If I play it, then have to stop for some reason.  Someone else in the house plays it.  Then I go back to play it thats 3 already.  If you have kids and the accidentally run it, then quit that also counts as a play.

I know why some publishers want to set limits, cause the game is so bad the demo is all people need to play till the game hits the bargin bin.

For me, however, none of these issue about demo play limits bother me.  I am the only one that plays the system and if I don’t like the demo it is deleted after 1st play.  I have already done that for 2 games on the Wii U.

That being said, since the Wii U just barely launched if I was Nintendo I wouldn’t let the Demo limits exists for a few months, that way you can get your friends interested in getting the system by showing off stuff.  I did that with mine already, showed off ZombiU and the Super Mario game and he left my house and bought a Wii U.
