Wii U close to getting hacked?

Earlier today  the hacker group known as failOverflow posted some pictures and tweets hinting that they may be onto something concerning hacking the Wii U. The title of the picture was “The Wii U is a system we can all enjoy together”.

The hacker group made it clear this was done on the Wii U, not a PC. Pretty exciting times if you are one who enjoys homebrew. Do note that while there are reasons to not hack your device, such as losing your warranty, not all people who use homebrew are pirates.

Are you somebody interested in a little homebrew action on the Wii U? There is no current estimated time for a public release but feel free to let us know how you feel about this in the comments below.

That was a little faster than I expected; least it’s not done yet

    • http://profiles.google.com/varking William Smith

I am sure it still has a ways to go.

    • Megan Allen

wow the 3DS just got hacked and now the wiiu huh….mwa ha ha!
wait……crap……i dont want to hack my system yet…..december update tvii

conclusion: it’s gonna last 3 hours

      • NkoSekirei

hardly doubt it and who in the right mind would tell everyone their gonna hack the  wii u u know nintendo gonna nail them with lawsuits and $hit if they even try too.

  • http://deceth.com/ deceth

    muhaha.

    • http://profiles.google.com/varking William Smith

      Yes!

      • http://twitter.com/davia622 DOYC

         Right on!

  • Megan Allen

let us hope that it isn’t homebrew, homebrew just seemed like you were cheating on ‘hacking’ your console to much people claimed to be hackers, but really they just used my codes :(

    • http://twitter.com/The_Skelly The_Skelly

      Your codes??

      • http://profiles.google.com/varking William Smith

Was curious about that comment as well.

I kinda hope that the WiiU isn’t hacked for at least another year. I mean, since the WiiU units themselves are being sold at a loss, Nintendo is relying on software sales to pull them through.  If even those start to fall due to piracy (yes I know they’re not all pirates but some are) then that will seriously hurt Nintendo. Just want to hope Ninendo can figure out some sort of buisiness model that would limit the harm of piracy to them before any homebrew comes out.

    • Adam Fox

I try to be very careful when it comes to “pirated” games….yes, I do download them, but its usually just to try them out.  I don’t like services like GameFly or Blockbuster (Especially blockbuster) to get games, and since there are no game rental stores anywhere, downloading ISOs are the next best thing…..I typically will download a game and play it for a couple hours to see if I like it….if i’m still unsure, i’ll keep it a little while longer…..I may play it with friends and see how they like it….if it turns out to be fun, I will buy it.  Sometimes I download a game because I want to play it but can’t afford it right away but want something to do on the weekend…..after I get the money to buy it, I will go buy it….even if I have already completed the game, I will still buy it….The ones I download that I don’t like, i just throw away

    • http://profiles.google.com/varking William Smith

Just want to point out if people misunderstand my article; I AM AGAINST ALL FORMS OF PIRACY. Tweaks and tricks to the console to make the console do more, I am in favor of. Cheating in games just ruins games.

    • http://twitter.com/davia622 DOYC

All major game consoles are sold at a loss at their time of launch. That is not specific to the Wii U.

      • Sidney Majurie

Actually no, this is the first time in Nintendo’s history they’ve sold any console at a loss. This and the 3DS price cut is a big part of why Nintendo has recently posted losses for the first time in the company’s history…

      • AZJ

No, no no.  Not all major consoles.  Just two bloated companies that make way too much and are masters at nothing.   They created this notion to kill the last gaming hardware and software company since Nintendo makes money from hardware and software.  Sony and Microsoft:  TVs, computers, tablets, record label, and who knows, salad dressings too.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/JG7BKQZR5YS3FENACTUNDJHZ3I Matthew

Ikt is this time around…..they are loseing money on the wii u hardware…..

    • sandrav92301

they make their money  back with 1 console sold  and 1 game sold

    • A A

do research first you idiot. WiiU is actually selling with a profit per unit. That is why it’s so expensive. It is literally why they are making as much money as when the original wii came out simply from selling it at a higher price.

      • Guest

Actually, it is at a loss according to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. However, he also said that they only needed to sell one game to make up for the loss.

  • Cloud W Omega

“not all people who use homebrew are pirates. ” but most are

  • http://waxingerratic.tumblr.com/ ECM

99% of people that “hack” their systems are pirates. Let’s not pretend the number is any lower than that–it’s an insult to our intelligence. And a huge chunk of those will cheat online, to boot, ruining the experience for everyone else.

(Seriously, people gotta stop with the nonsense homebrew dodge–it’s getting old. There are a tiny, tiny handful of people that will only use this hack to load homebrew.)

    • http://profiles.google.com/varking William Smith

You don’t even know what they will enable for us to use once it goes public. Let us not throw baseless numbers around though. I am willing to bet many who hack their systems do indeed do it to cheat in games. I doubt, highly doubt 99% of all people who hack their console are informed enough to pirate games.

      • AZJ

Hmm, informed enough to hack their systems, but not informed enough to pirate games.  If anything, I think more people pirate games than hack their systems.  Of course I could be wrong.

        • http://www.facebook.com/Davidsmorrill David Morrill

Well you need to hack your system to run pirated games. So unfortunately you cannot be right. I personally hacked my system JUST to play custom characters on Smash Brothers Brawl. Haven’t ruined anything for anyone online, and haven’t stole a cent.

          • http://www.facebook.com/zachary.wzientek Zachary Wzientek

I hacked mine as well for the same reason and I can’t even get smash bros+ to work I just want to have a bunch of awesome characters but it keeps messing up the game

        • Layne

Many people don’t actually figure out how to mod it themselves, they pay somebody from Craigslist to do it, and usually the craigslist postings don’t advertise piracy, to avoid any trouble. So, then the customer gets their Wii modded, is still uninformed of piracy that can be done, and will have to rely on the modder from craigslist every time there is an update for the system or homebrew…all that is assuming they never learn how to use google that is.

        • samljer22

a hacked system doesnt always mean you can run unsigned code.
          3DS is proof of that.

    • Shroomforce

      Seriously, 99%? It’s definitely a lot less.

I have homebrew for my Wii and I only use it for texture hacks or custom tracks in MKWii.

    • Austin Burn

i pirate nothing and neither do any of my friends

      • Guest

        I love your picture

    • Forrest Griffin

Hmmm.. I hacked my wii. Almost all my friends have- None of us pirate. We just make hacks for games. And don’t say “Cheats” All we do is make new courses/levels, Changing Colors/Textures, Adding characters etc.

    • ToxicCupcakes

      Source on those statistics?

    • David Lopez II

I heard once that 99% of all statistics are made up on the spot. Trololololol. Seriously though, Piracy has been around FOREVER. As long as there has been art there have been professionals who have perfected making illegitimate copies of it. This is a tradition that goes back to when the Mona Lisa was first painted. Piracy did NOT ruin the music industry, the movie industry, or any console that has been opened. To try to shut down people who simply want to customize their gaming experience, or make their PURCHASED hardware do something that the original creator left out (like playing freakin DVDs) just because a few people are going to use the technology to steal their games is ludicrous. Thieves will steal, no matter what. When you catch them you punish them. If you don’t catch them you assume they are innocent. This is one of the founding principles of our legal system.

      • César Antonio Arias Velarde

I found it funny how the USA citizens believe that the internet is another state of their country and have their same “legal system” and laws.

    • samljer22

xbox is hacked to shit and the cheating on there is very small.
Also google reports that 99% is way off base.

You seem to just assume shit yea?

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/M6KQAA4QHYVK3ZZYKJHPNGKX6Y david

ummm if that’s true one quick question…. what are you doing on a website about “hacking” the wii???

  • WEL

homebrew my arse! People that hack their systems is always to play pirated games.

    • http://profiles.google.com/varking William Smith

I hack my system. I do not pirate games. Lets stay away from always and nevers.

      • AZJ

I always stay away from nevers.

    • http://twitter.com/The_Skelly The_Skelly

I have all my consoles hackedmodded and have never once pirated a game.

  • Mickey Mouse

I hacked my Wii with HomeBrew, but I’m not so sure with my Wii U as it has a warranty on it unlike my second hand Wii when I got it.

  • WhiteKyurem

Plz No! I’m sick and tired of cheate rs playing Online! Just look at The Conduit -.-

  • MikeChritopher

People that hack there console’s suck in video game’s.There gaming skills are garbage thats why they hack it for. Then when there winning they talk shit like there good but u are awful f—ing bums

    • http://twitter.com/The_Skelly The_Skelly

Seriously, “People that hack there console’s suck in video game’s.”? I have almost every single one of my consoles hacked or modded to run homebrew and have never once used any kind of game mod to cheat online. Yeah, some mods like campaign (Single player) god modes and stuff are fun once in a while, but cheating online is ridiculous. So before you get butthurt because you suck online and that automatically that everyone is cheating, go practice and get better. You are probably one of those kids online that scream about lag switchers and crap when you get killed!

      • AZJ

You changed a general attack (people that hack) to a personal attack (saying that this MikeChritopher who may or may not have spelled their last name wrong sucks at games).  Good for you.

      • MikeChritopher

cause u suck and ur to cheap to buy a game.and i dont have to hack to be good bum.

  • Grunty McGrunty

its just like any iOS device you have when you think about it really, i
used to have a jailbreaked iPod touch before the battery fritted on me.
the only mods i had, lets call them that, were for either text,
background images or icon changes. it was alot of fun to have while it
lasted, for me anyways. does it make me a homebrew or a hacker if i
jailbreak my iOS device to get fonts and textures that i would normaly
have to search for HOURS of my “personal time” to find and spend an
endless amount of time on top of that to try and figure out how to apply
the changes to my device before i can enjoy them at all when it can be
done for me instead? i mean, seriously, if someone enjoys hacking games
and cheat, they suck a dog’s balls. but if you enhance your console or
handheld, or whatever you like, it makes you a homebrewer?

    this
is a very very sad gaming sub-culture we live in if less than a month
after its launch the WiiU gets already a hacked announcement. other than
maybe a FEW worthwhile games on the WiiU, most that came out with the
launch are simple ports. go hack the original games on their first
released consoles instead of focusing on a continuously in need of
updates machine like the Wii U to break it open when it hasn’t even been
6 months after the launch cause it’ll be the same shenanigans once a
    hack breaking update is released…

HOW’S THAT FOR EFFECTIVE HACKING!!! go ahead and homebrew all you want but everything will fall apart by next year, see how that’ll feel.

    • http://twitter.com/davia622 DOYC

This is a bit silly of a post and you missed on some things. Explain
what is going to fall apart by next year, aka 2 weeks… The console is
going to fall apart because of the software we have in it? You do not
need to touch the innards of your device in order to hack your Wii lol

      • AZJ

Next year has never been also been known as (AKA) 2 weeks.  Do we have to pretend to be dense to make a point?

stupid hacker group u gave ur self aways now to email nintendo and have ur @$$es tossed into jail for trying to hack the system and ruin peoples $hit.Idiots these days they should known better not to gave ur name of ur group away lol

    • http://twitter.com/davia622 DOYC

you might just be the dumbest one on this comment thread. that is truly something to behold

      • AZJ

Come on, this person could be a 10 year old.  No need to call them dumb.

    • Austin Burn

This is probably the stupidest thing I have seen all day. What do you mean “u gave ur self aways” that’s what they were trying to do to raise awareness. They aren’t hacking the network or anything. “trying to hack the system and ruin peoples $hit” all in all sir you are retarded.

    • http://profiles.google.com/varking William Smith

Are you new to Wii hacking? This isn’t going to land them in jail lol.

      • AZJ

         I think it was implied.

    • David Lopez II

Modifying a piece of hardware that you purchase is not illegal. Creating, distributing, and/or selling illegitimate copies or copyrighted material is illegal. That is why “hackers” don’t go to prison but people who use torrents do. Email Nintendo all you want, they can’t do anything about this.

  • Johny

running homebrew, homemade aplications, tweaking the system to to much more that it originally can, and modify it to suit your needs ? … to that i say AHOY … i fully support and am looking for it. Being a programmer myself, i love that kind of stuff :D

But hey… theres always a double edged sword… with hacks and tweaks, there comes cheaters -.- … i dont call them hackers.. but just dirty CHEATERS using a code or some fun tweak/hack that some other respectfull hacker or programmer made. and using it JUST for douchbaggery and ruining games for others… developers do alot to prevent those (for example… black ops 2 has VERY strict policy about cheating and very severe consequences.) but there always is a way. I just hope those lousy no-lifers will be a VERY VERY small procentage of minority that they wont ruin the satisfaction and enjoyment for others.

  • kevinxDxD

im not that rich nor poor but i actually dislike using these programs such as “WiiU Homebrew” i rather just buy my games digital and re sell em agian like gamestop

    • http://twitter.com/davia622 DOYC

your not that rich, nor poor, nor good at life. your comment makes zero sense. you’d rather just buy your games digitally and then sell them to gamestop? that’s not even possible. why did i even bother responding to this retarded comment?

      • AZJ

I never knew a comment could be retarted.

        • Arthur Jarret

Yet… this guy has managed to do so.

The internet never ceases to amaze.

How’s the Wii U getting hacked so fast but still struggling to hack the 3DS?

    • tommarvolo124

Because unlike the 3DS the Wii U’s predecessor was completely and utterly pwned and as it has backwards compatibility makes it that much easier to perform the hacking.

      • Jonathan Rose

How is that unlike the 3DS?  I’m pretty sure the DS had also been completely and utterly pwned and I’m also pretty sure the 3DS has backwards compatability to the DS.

Oh, and you know what? The current state of hacking for both devices is about the same. The sandboxed backwards compatability mode is compromised, and each system itself is currently untouched.

  • http://twitter.com/blupromo blupromo

although i dont nessecarily condone pirating this could benfit the wii u in effect if you come from the standpoint that some people have already pirated some wii games . now the wii u is out they want to play wii u games as well they will buy the wii u get some wii u games and still be able to play the pirated games from the wii on 1 system thats consolidation totally worth it  i have 30  wii games bought and 5 wii u games. plus the 3 party vendors of the wii u games that are not made by nintendo itselfg gets a portion of the proceeds on sale plus  ninetendo already gets the licencing cost for the software is that really what they are depending on?

  • Denison Guizelini

Rip off Region lock, is the only homebrew We need.

  • Andrew W Garttmeyer

If this somehow allows me to play A Link to the Past on my gamepad, I will probably have to do this.  Although if NES allows me to do this for a fee first…I will have NO PROBLEM giving them some cash, but I would like to add that I already bought the VC version of it.

  • Night0fCore

I homebrewafied my Wii, but I never used it to cheat online or anything O.o that just spoils the fun. I just used HB for things like changing the saves on certain games to unlock secret characters or add new levels etc

  • AmendFIRSTment

If this mean I can put a different internet browser with flash, I will definitely be hacking it.

  • Arthur Jarret

I hacked my wii because my DVD player broke, and I needed something while my new PS3 was in the mail.

Afterwards, I used it to run scummVM and replay the monkey island series, as well as goblins and woodruff

    • Arthur Jarret

By the way, I own almost 150 wii games, all original – a pirated games collection look so very ugly compared to the original cases…

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/JG7BKQZR5YS3FENACTUNDJHZ3I Matthew

@EMC Their are only a hand full that used homebrew to cheat online…..your out f your mind if you think 99% of people using homebrew want to cheat online. Your insulting your own intelligence…

    • David Lopez II

      Lol.

  • william maber

    no it 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001%
who are pirates because. i will run Linux  and the ps3  was hack after the remover other OS

  • devmiles

the thing is that hackers exactly know what the players want. we could play snes zelda 3 on the tablet and what not.. all stuff nintendo doesn’t wanna spend time on, rather on nintendo tv or some wii sports alike game. piracy is of all times buy gotta say that nintendo is always fucked over hehe.. sony and microsoft have better protection some way

  • AbedNadir

    My body is ready…
