Nyko battery replacement triples GamePad battery life

You can look forward to longer gaming sessions thanks to Nyko’s new GamePad peripheral. According to the developer, the Power Pak triples the Wii U GamePad’s battery life.

Moreover, the Power Pak completely replaces the current GamePad battery, which will be a welcome relief to consumers who were anticipating a cumbersome attachment.

The Power Pak retails for $24.99USD, is rechargeable via the existing charging dock and cable, and includes a handy screwdriver for opening the GamePad’s battery compartment.

Nyko added that nothing else is required to install the battery.

What are your thoughts on this new peripheral? Are you happy with the GamePad’s current battery life, or might you consider purchasing a Power Pak?

Perfect as long as it doesn’t weigh a tonne.

    • AAAkabob

That’s what I’m saying, one of the reasons the gamepad is so light is that there’s a lot of empty space. I don’t want to trade in comfort for battery life.

    • Nathan DeFalco

I’d like to know how much it actually does weigh and how much the original battery weights so we can compare.

  • RonaldRayguns

Nobodys going to buy that, the current battery  life is just fine and 24.99 !! I meen comeon money doesnt grow on trees Nyko. Kiddin.

    • AAAkabob

Just fine? I have to charge my gamepad 2-3 times a day otherwise I’d be interrupted. This will probly change once I’m back in college but for hardcore gamers 4 hours before recharging is not enough. Just imagine if you forget to charge it and you bring your friends over and find it only is gonna last 20 more mins. I was willing to pay 30-40 max, so this seems like something I’ll add to my wish list as long as it doesn’t make the gamepad uncomfortable.

      • Laud

        He was ‘Kiddin.’

      • DarthNugget

You’re playing way too much if you have to charge it 2-3 times a day. And it works while charging as well, so not that big a deal

    • CTRAINGAMER

      I think your just broke…if not…then winey.

It’s cool but not needed for now.  Maybe when the battery needs to be replaced I”ll pick one up.

  • GeDDeN

Im waiting to make sure it wont negatively effect my game pad in ANY way…

    • Yoshiwhirlwind

Same here. Sounds too good to be true. It’s the nyko name that scares me really.

  • Scott Truitt

I will defiantly buy one of these.

  • Mickey Mouse

Will buy when the existing battery needs replaced. The current battery is ok for now, mainly because my extended play sessions have been with the pro controller, and the gamepad has only been used for Nintendo Land (which I don’t play for long periods). I’ll be getting games that use the gampad and have long play sessions (LEGO City Undercover), so it would come in handy then.

  • val berger

25bucks for triple the battery life is good. I’d totally go for that, wiiU’s battery life is kinda embarassing. It’s especially annoying when you have long multiplayer parties and in the middle of the game the pad suddenly shuts down. they could at least have implemented a better low battery warning than the red light, i somehow never happen to notice that (and it seems to me, that it only lights up like a few minutes before the battery is vanished, so during an intense gaming session you won’t even mind that at all)

    • Sidney Majurie

Suddenly shuts down? The indicator light turns red giving you about a 20 minute warning LOL. Are u one of those folks who ignores the gas light in your car and wonders why the car shut off :D

      • Emil Bergvall

Naaa the red light turns on yes. But if you are busy playing and doesn’t notice the red light because you are watching the tv then then the only warning you will get is an on screen warning less the 5 minutes before the battery is out.

        • val berger

Yeah, Emil just wrote down what I meant. I don’t think, I would prefer a warning message on my television, everytime my battery runs out, but some better notification would just be better in terms of usability. the Pad could vibrate and show a message for example, as the gamepad content wouldn’t go on your nerves as much.

        • Sidney Majurie

Errrrr…. It turns red for a first warning and then it begins flashing red as a second warning. I mean come on. If you need more warning then that then I wonder how it is you are even capable of playing games without help.

Some of these complaints… really. Like the people who complain about the Wii’s backwards compatibility. If you would just take a breath and think for 2 minutes you’d understand why it’s seperate and can’t just boot the game from the Wii U menu. Wii does more then play it’s disk games. It has all these channels Nintendo also wanted to continue working along with you Wii Virtual console games. Because of Miiverse and Wara Wara Plaza, Wii U couldn’t just be an upscale version of the Wii Menu. I mean think. Be happy you have backwards compatibility at all.

Perhaps I’ve been gaming for too long. Today’s “gamers” just seem too whiny. Death threats to developers via twitter, petitions to get game endings to change cause they didn’t like it, and so on. Gamers in the 80′s and 90′s just played games until they mastered them, good or bad, you know, hardcore gamers. Today that means something else. Today “hardcore gamers” cry when a game they want comes out on a system they apparently don’t want to buy (Bayonetta 2). Wow. I wanted to play Sonic the Hedgehog so I bought a Sega Genesis. I wanted to play games  on the go with back light and color so I bought a Sega Game Gear. And that thing ate batteries like no one’s business. And back then, you had to buy batteries EVERY TIME THEY DIED! Unlike Wii U, they were not rechargeable. Hmmm… hardcore.

  • cwong15

Just for the GamePad? The entire Wii U, with low power requirements and its own screen, is just one battery pack away from being a fully portable gaming system.

    Now you’re playing with POWER!
    TRIPLE POWER!

    • uPadWatcher

      Best quote ever!!!!

  • Seth S. Scott

    Oh HECK yes!

  • Tobias Naustdal

“Are you happy with the GamePad’s current battery life, or might you consider purchasing a Power Pak?”

that sounds like a stupid question… no offence :P

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001214715040 Dee Bee

Very nice… I will be ordering one.

  • Jeffery02

I’m usually very close to an outlet, so I generally play with the GamePad plugged in. That’s not much of a problem since the charger is a sufficient length for motion gaming. This would come in handy for those days though when I take it to a friend’s house and forget the charger…

  • Wayne Beck

If I put my controller down, I put it on the dock. Only time I’ve ever killed the battery was when I was playing literally all day, which is unhealthy anyway. =/

  • Ford Crews

Wow, looks like there is extra space in there to store your weed.

    • Zelly Jeffers

      Hahahaha…

    • Charlyzard

       DUDE!!! you are a genius!

    • Sidney Majurie

And your Gamepad will still be light, maybe even lighter :D

    • RoadyMike

I wish I could give this more likes.Pure genius

    • http://www.facebook.com/weston.nutter Weston Nutter

Not if you get the Nyko Power Pak. It takes up all the space in the battery compartment. What’s pictured above is the stock Wii U battery.

    • RyuNoHadouken

      hahahahahahaha

  • Anthony K Aurelia

I’m gonna buy this and keep the orig. for back up when this craps out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/matt.roderick.14 Matt Roderick

wonder why nintendo couldnt figure this out to begin with.. samething with the 3ds battery, nyko always comes in to save the day

  • Johny

i warmly welcome stuff like this.

  • Marcel Kleine

Power, power, power. It’s always the first priority. ^^

  • DemonRoach

Finanally I don’t need to play wired!

  • http://www.facebook.com/brightstarbeing Charles Figueroa Jr

Nintendo probably didn’t implement this because it’d make the Gamepad a lot heavier. Just wait. People will get this battery and then complain about how heavy it is.

    • http://www.facebook.com/weston.nutter Weston Nutter

They most likely didn’t include a larger battery to save money and not put the extra costs on the consumer.

  • Jack R

does it seem weird to anyone else that the uboost from nyko gives only 2x the battery life, but somehow this internal battery gives 3x the battery life, you would think the big add on attachment battery would be better than an internal replacement, guess not lol

  • Sidney Majurie

I have my brightness set to 3 (which is a perfect vibrancy)and that gives me about 4 1/2 hours of battery life. If your Wii U is being used longer than that in intervals, battery life will be the least of your problems…

  • Kaleb Taylor

    Nice :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/weston.nutter Weston Nutter

Definitely picking this up. A discrete battery replacement that triples the life of the controller without adding to the overall size of it? Sold.

    • RattleGore

      Same here bro…

  • Canyarion

I would love more battery life, but I don’t want my controller to be much heavier… We need to know how much the battery weighs!

  • Marcell Wade

This sounds legit, as long as the Game Pad does not get crazy heavy or something.

  • RyuNoHadouken

seems legit…i think im gonna cop this

  • ipaxton

I play alot of blops2 with the pro controller and I shut the display off on the gamepad. Thing that annoys me the most is it doesn’t matter if the display is on or off it still eats through the battery. But call me crazy but I think 3x still isn’t long enough, I want atleast 40hrs technology is out there now that it’s possible.

  • aldo2410

shut up and take my money!!!!

  • nicolascy32

Great addon !! Hope nintendo releases new systems with a simiral upgraded battery and of course the number 1 mistake -add analog shoulder buttons.

  • Kirbyomega

I’m probably not getting it…. I got a nyko battery recharger for my wiimotes, and it worked for 2 months, then stopped………

  • Cold Heat

    Sold !
