Zelda Wind Waker Wii U screenshots

Screenshots from the latest Nintendo Direct show us Zelda Wind Waker in more detail.

The biggest Wii U announcement of the year so far goes to Zelda: Wind Waker, as Nintendo just announced a Wii U Zelda Wind Waker game. The HD remake will offer Zelda fans something to play until the real Zelda Wii U title comes out on the Wii U (rumored for 2014). We’ve captured the screenshots Nintendo showcased of Wind Waker Wii U during their latest Nintendo Direct video. As expected, the game looks gorgeous. We can’t wait to see it in action. Check out the screens below:

I was hoping for Majoras Mask or even A Link to the Past. But i guess this is a game made for us to wait till the real HD Zelda hits us.

I REALLY like the graphics in this. I hope Nintendo made an engine for this and will use it for future video game projects.

Its funny how Nintendo actually does a HD remake better than most companies that release “HD” collections like for example:

Silent Hill HD Collection, a re-skinned and downgraded version of the original games

Metal Gear Solid HD collection, both games only had minor changes and the polygon count remained the same.

Zone of the Enders HD Collection, laggy mess with again only minor texture changes.

Legend of Zelda: Wind Walker HD, remade character models, new HD textures, better lighting and a better polygon count.

    • NintendoNoob

Nintendo puts quality into their remakes instead of those developers. All they do is get the pc version. Turn the settings to ultra, pack it into a game disc then ship it all over the world without testing them.

      Nintendo: Quality HD remakes

      Other companies: Copy and Paste

      • xdlugia

Microsoft did it right with Halo Anniversary though, but other than that it’s all BS.

        • NintendoNoob

Yes that one was one of the GOOD remakes

        • DragonSilths

Except for the ludicrous lag for doing Co-op Campaign on Anniversary it was good.

      • Val Berger

There are some companies who actually are able to do good remakes, if they want to.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, where they even hired the great japanese director Ryûhei Kitamura to do an amazing Job on the Cutscrenes and Silicon Knights to let it look quite good (not as good as it could have looked like, but you know, it was good enough to look pretty I guess =) )

Or Resident Evil Rebirth, where they also completely redid the whole game, adding tons of additional stuff and put so much love into details. My two favorite Remakes of all time. But OK, both of them may have had some support from Nintendo too.

    • Gary Moscheles

RE4 had a decent HD remake, but some of the enemy dialogue sounding like the bottlecaps

    • Fuzunga

That’s because there’s a difference between remakes and rereleases. Those games aren’t remakes. They’re upscaled ports. This is a remake. Halo anniversary is a remake. Monkey Island: Special Edition is a remake. None of those collections are actual remakes. People seem to be forgetting the meaning of the word, developers included.

  • SoulSilverZero

I want this since I never got to play the GameCube version.

    • Fred

I was in High School when this game came out and I was so put off by the cartoon animation style that I swore I’d never play it. Now the style doesn’t bother me, and off-tv play may present me with the opportunity I needed to play it (I say off-tv play because I will probably play it while my wife watches shows like Biggest Loser and American Idol)

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I know many were caught up on the graphics of this game but it always comes down to the gameplay.  This was one of the best Zelda games in my opinion.

        • Gary Moscheles

yes. the criticism towards the art style has always really bothered me. in terms of gameplay, it’s about as good as the series gets.

          • FreyjaJoro

I think Wind Waker is one of the better ones. Actually all the zelda games that followed Ocarina of Time are better than OoT. Most people who say otherwise say it because of nostalgia.

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

As if I needed an excuse to play this game again.   Any updates on controls as in Wii Motion or will it just use the standard gamepad controls.

    • http://www.facebook.com/weston.nutter Weston Nutter

I was wondering the same thing. Aonuma did say they would “tune up” the gameplay. Maybe motion controls will appear as an added option. I loved Skyward Sword, so I’d be all for it!

      • FreyjaJoro

Doubt. The selling point of the Wii U is the gamepad. And honestly I don’t like motion controls. Skyward Sword was a good game… but certain things about it annoyed me. A) Fi’s constant statistics… B) Repetition, seriously I know what the treasure is, don’t tell me again, and finally the motion controls glitched quite a few times, I never died but I never felt like I had total control.

I’m just skeptical of motion controls though.

  • Nintenjoe82

I just bought Balloon Fight for 30p. Who wants to touch me.

    • NintendoNoob

       MEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! *touch*

      SWAG XD

  • NintendoNoob

I think this was both a smart and bad move on Nintendos side.
Good because a lot of people loved Wind Waker

Bad because people might get the wrong idea with this. A lot of people on gaming websites say that Nintendo has run out of idea’s and only can make remakes. I would’ve been a lot happier if this came out after Wii U Zelda so it does not seem like Nintendo cares about remakes.

Don’t get me wrong I love remakes of my favorite games but I also want to play new installments in the series instead of a graphically enhanced version of a game I already know the ending to..

    • Nintenjoe82

I kind of think it’s a silly one too. They could have just emulated the GC version in 1080p for the Virtual Console and it would have looked pretty nice. I’m sensible enough to know that the long wait for the real Zelda U will be worth it.

I think Link to the Past could be so easily made into a great 3D Zelda game maybe even with optional motion plus combat. It is still my favourite version of Hyrule and it had the best items :)

      • http://www.facebook.com/weston.nutter Weston Nutter

I’m guessing they figured they’d put forth a bit more effort, and charge full price. The game looks great, but I’m sure updating the visuals wasn’t that demanding a task.

I’d also love to see a full 3D LttP remake. Ah… that would be too awesome!

        • Nintenjoe82

Part of me thinks the main reason they went for Wind Waker was because the internet was full of rumours about the remake being Majora’s Mask or LttP.

          • DragonSilths

Majora’s Mask remake will be for the 3DS. Twilight Princess doesnt need a remake. That was only 2 Zelda games ago.

          • Nintenjoe82

LttP has nothing to do with  Twilight Princess. It is 20 years old.

    • http://www.facebook.com/weston.nutter Weston Nutter

People saying Nintendo has run out of ideas because of this remake are dumb. They might have a point if Nintendo weren’t already developing a brand new Zelda, but since that’s exactly the case, they end up sounding foolish.

They even make it a point to say this game is to appease the fans until the real Wii U Zelda is completed.

    • DragonSilths

People have been bashing Nintendo for years…They are brainless apes. Those people are confused. They think Nintendo has run out of ideas when in reality Nintendo makes these remakes because THE FANS WANT THEM. If people didnt say “Come on Nintendo do a remake of this please!!!” Then Nintendo wouldn’t bother doing remakes. Plus this is the 10th year anniversary of Windwaker. Point is Nintendo listens to their fans and respects them.

      • http://www.facebook.com/jayme.sanchesfilho Jayme Sanches Filho

        that is totally true

  • Dominic Coradazzi

Hmm, I’m not quite sure if I like the new style or not…

  • Justin Lee

Can we have a comparison between these screenshots and the gamecube version?

  • Noah Linderer

    Majora’s Mask? What’s that!?

    • Dre Thompson

dont insult one of the greats zelda games ever made fool

  • Rafid Dewan

Imagine graphics like these but in the SEAS!

  • Clem

As nice as these graphics look I think it’s going to take some time, not to mention some actual footage, for this new look to grow on me. The fact is that this is a different art style from that of the already-good-looking game it is based on. It’s still very good-looking, but it’ll take some time for me, at least, to swallow such a drastic artistic change in a remake of my favorite game of all time. I’m certainly not saying the graphics aren’t good, they’re obviously technically superior, but the original was impressive because it legitimately looked like a cartoon whereas this looks more like Mario Galaxy. Does anybody else feel this way…?

    • RyuNoHadouken

      no

    • http://www.facebook.com/weston.nutter Weston Nutter

I get where you’re coming from, but I don’t think it’s an issue. If you prefer the look of the original game, it’s still a thing, and you can play it instead.

Personally, I think both the original and the remake look fantastic! It’s kind of like the difference between taditional cartoons and Pixar characters. In any case, the environments and lighting are gorgeous in the remake!

    • sup3rnoah

erm.. same art style. its just a shinier, better lit, more detailed version. and it looks great. still looks like a cartoon to me, just in HD. i don’t understand your upset feelings.

  • http://www.facebook.com/redcomshell Salam Semaan

I hope that they let you use the 3DS for the tingle tuner. I wonder if that was even thought in? I hope so.

  • Val Berger

I really hope, they’re adding the missing last dungeon which they never had time for and had to exchange that with this triforce-thing. I was kinda dissappointed back then, as wind waker’s dungeons were really, really great work.

  • Moluks

  • Jonas

its ok for a remake. I will get it,but i still anticipate the other game more.

  • http://twitter.com/jonrod2020 jonrod2020

Idea: gamepad is used for the tingle tuner.

  • Linskarmo

Those pictures do look great. I can’t wait!

  • Alexis Goitia

I think you people should get a hint from 2001 in which Wind Waker was getting a lot of shit from people just like you just from being different.
    Talk about double standards.

  • Nintendofreak

could u please put a side to side comparison between gamecube n wiiu…cuz my mind is foogyy as hell

  • Schadd Zimdahl

In all honesty the game looks like fine on the GameCube. The only update seems to be some bloom lighting, a little upgrade in shading and more than likely Anti-Aliasing. To me though it looks about the same as it does emulated on my PC and it’s perfectly fine to do a reboot so long as it doesn’t come with a price tag of over 30$. In my opinion anything higher than that and you could just get a used copy for a GameCube and be just as happy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/matt.roderick.14 Matt Roderick

I am happy about this.. but I would really love to see a true hd remake of the nintendo 64 games

  • Spawn

Tbh I think it looks worse. the cel shaded style is gone.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IGCFKMM3MC64RCZPSQHSJTGGZM matt

I just don’t understand why they bothered to do Wind Waker of all games for an HD upscale. It’s appeal came from the cartoonish cel-shaded style, why in the world would it need a graphical upgrade? To make a cartoon look more like a cartoon?

As cool as this is I think Twilight Princess or Majora’s Mask would have been a way better choice for a remake. Considering how much people have been going nuts for a Majora’s Mask remake

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PIFZRECI6MLOO566XZESX5SUTA Kailey

I am seriously holding back tears right now. After 10 long years of asking Nintendo to remake this IT IS FINALLY HAPPENING!!! This is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time. I LOVE YOU NINTENDO!!! YOU MADE MY DREAMS COME TRUE!!! :D

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZDBNPXMLHET4OHEYUUFQVISNIU Eddy Boy

I have wind Waker for the Wii ( game cube disc obviously) But I would still love this! I would really like a new Zelda game on wii u too. They had a Zelda game for every consle I believe.
