A video mockup of how Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker might control

While we’re not getting a new Legend of Zelda game this year for Wii U, Iwata did show off Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, to be released this year on Wii U as a gift to the fans. We’re excited to see the game in HD, but the folks over at Cubed3 wanted to know how Wind Waker would play on the Wii U before we get our hands on it. Above is their mockup video showing what Nintendo could possibly do with the game and what fans can expect.

What do you think of their efforts? If this is the direction Nintendo takes Wind Waker HD, do you think it’ll be something you’ll enjoy? Let us know in the comments.

Thanks Jorge!

    How?? :o

    • [000]

I would guess some kind of reflective green screen, or maybe they just disassembled a Wii U and did some crazy mod. Actually, green screen would be practically impossible.

  • FabulousKing

I miss the gameplay from Phantom Hourglass.

    • Tom Brandow

Meh, I dislike a few things from phantom hourglass. Returning to that same tower to repeat the same dungeon over and over again was only tedious. They did the same with Spirit tracks and to an extent in Skyward Sword with the demise battles and dragons. It’s just seems like a lazy move.

The touch controls were amazing except with the sword. It was less responsive than a button layout and it would cramp my hand. An option to play the game with just a different sword setting would have been so nice.

Still an amazing game and I like how they revisited the top down view like the original Zelda games. Anything with the toon link art also gets my approval.

  • Laud

    Awesome.

    Yes, that word again.

    • Silent

      What word?

      • val berger

        Awesome!

        • Silent

I thought bird was the word but never mind.

  • Sydney Ultrasyd

    Many good news today !

  • Nothing5555

This was actually one of my favorite Zeldas!

    • val berger

It’s kinda funny how many people do say that today. back in the days when that game was revealed, I felt like this was the most hated zelda game of all time, just because of it’s art style which was truly different than what had been showed before at the E3 Gamecube tech demo. It’s cool though, that after all, it really turned out to be one hell of a good game that still has so many fans, although I am one of those ppl who was really dissappointed about this triforce-hunting-stuff. Let’s hope, they fix that with the HD remake (although I don’t really believe it)

      • The_fuzz_buzz

This was and still is probably my favorite Zelda game ever! And Majora’s Mask was the most hated one.

        • Yannis Mi

totally agree with you! wind waker was the best and majora’s was the worst one (but still pretty damn good)!!!!

          • DragonSilths

Windwaker is my 2nd or 3rd favorite. Ocarina still #1. Skyward sword is in my top 3 to. But Majoras was bad.

          • Joey Perez

skyward sword is my worst … i wanted to love it but then i just got tired of going back n forth revisting the same damn places…. my fave is ocarina and windwaker although I heart link to the past.

        • WiiUltra

Really? I enjoyed Majoras Mask as much as OoT.

        • val berger

hm maybe I am alone here when I say that, but for me I think Twilight Princess might have been the worst one. It still was a very beautiful (especially beautiful) game, but it’s gameplay appeared to be kinda cheesy to mee. nothing new, just elements from other games plus new elements I didn’t really enjoy. And for the first time, they totally copied elements from another game (there was a bossfight that was just exactly like a Shadow of the Colossus-fight. As SOC actually was an amazing title, it felt kinda cool, but then again, Zelda is the game to be copied, not to copy!) It seemed to me, that they just wanted to give all fans who wanted Wind Waker to look dark and realistic what they asked for but didn’t really have an idea of a real game conept, so they took this OoT-like setting & structure and modified it. Still, it’s an amazing beautiful game, but I don’t feel the same thing with Twilight Princess that I feel with all other games of the series. Like the feeling, that everything just fits like it is when you play through it.

Majora’s Mask was one of my secret favorites, but I just love spin offs and hope Nintendo may bring out something like that again. But yeah, as it was different, it’s obvious that all fans of the franchise might have liked it like the other games. I just think, Nintendo should try out more stuff like that, as it shows that you can go totally wicked ways with zelda without always telling the same story all over again.

        • lewis

Why all the hate to majora, that game was beast

        • SoulSilverZero

I liked Majora’s Mask even better than Ocarina of Time.

Majora is my all time favorite, second is Wind Waker, third is Skyward Sword, forth is Link to the Past, and fifth is Ocarina.

      • MasterPpv

That Triforce hunt was supposed to be actual, individual dungeons that had to be scrapped for time constraint purposes =(

        • val berger

yeah I know, so fans are hoping Nintendo will now implement those dungeons, which I just don’t believe unless they announce it.

      • Nothing5555

Hey I pre-ordered this game and never let the decision of cell-shading art cloud my judgment. Actually I liked the art direction as it reminded me of the original Legend of Zelda.

        • val berger

And you were totally right about that :)
I didn’t really join those haters too as I just felt like Nintendo would do that for a reason. And today I gotta say, it is one of the few games, that have really timeless visual design. especially if a game tries to come up with superrealistic state of the art graphics, it’s nothing special anymore a few months after it’s release. but wind waker just felt like it would’ve always meant to be done just like it was.

    • Wayne Beck

This was probably my second least favorite Zelda, right above Majora’s Mask, but to be fair I think that was 90% the Awful Art style. Gameplay was pretty good honestly, a little convoluted. I hope they put in the effort to make this a better game than it was on Gamecube, not just update the Graphics. I look forward to seeing what Nintendo has come up with for integrating the Gamepad in to a Zelda Title. With any luck, they will take our feedback and use it to enhance the New HD Zelda in development.

      • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Thank you Wayne finally someone I can talk to. I feel exactly the same as you on Majora’s mask and Windwaker. Two of my least favorite Zelda games, MM just plain sucked imo hated the time reset and being forced to do everything all over again, and WW being my second least fav game also due to the horrific artstyle, I loved the overal story of WW nonetheless.

        • http://www.facebook.com/joe.hendrey Joe Hendrey

awful? horrific? = I realise the art style is not for everyone… but they’re pretty strong words. I think it was a really good decision because it’s never going to look really dated like OoT and MM. Even TP is starting to look pretty old.

          • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

I won’t apologize for the harsh choice of words, it’s really how I felt about WW the only good thing was the overall story in WW if people want to down vote me for it as was allready done on my first post, I’m sorry for that then, all in all it’s my opinion on these two game I just really found them the worst two of the series, and I have every part except the 2 DS Zelda’s for the same reason I hated/hate WW.

I agree that that artstyle will never date, but it just really isn’t for me. If it was skyward sword style I would have liked it a lot more.

    • Stephen

This is actually my favorite game of all time.

  • uPadWatcher

I truly love that concept. I’m sure that the Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development (EAD) have watched that clip and will somehow surprise everyone. The Wind Waker HD will be one of the greatest games available on the Wii U.

    • val berger

as far as the gamepad integration goes, I think this looks like what to expect, but I wouldn’t really stick on those wiimote controls as I really don’t think, they’ll supportthe wiimote. Would be great, but would also surprise me.

    • Stephen Baxendale

I don’t think gameplay with the gamepad will be too extreme becuase they confirmed offscreen play. Can’t really use all those touch controls on the main game.

  • lewis

best is still OoT (but I love all zelda games!)

    • Genesect4ssb4

To me Twililght Princess and Skyward Sword (especially the latter, that thing got 10/10 from over 30 publications) got close. Those were awesome games

      • lewis

        so very true

  • lewis

Ocarina of time for those who dont know

  • YoG99

    I don’t understand the nails …

A girl was playing while the guy talked…

  • Thomas Fitzgibbon

Some neat ideas, but personally I think Nintendo will make some other inspiring, innovative and clever ways to use the GamePad, given the fact…well…they made it!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/X3ZKS57QHNI7BPNG2H3HSFCHJI Chiwawa

the plus pad should be the select items. R stick-camera L stick- movesment. either y or b to attack ( y is a little more comfortable to me.) ‘A’ to roll. ZL or ZR to target. Im still thinking of more ways. I was about to get windwaker for gamecube at a pawn shop. but im gonna wait for the HD version on Wii U. the fanmade video looked pretty legit though.

  • Møhåmmęd Jårmøn

I feel so ashamed to be a huge Nintendo supporter but I have only played one Zelda game :/ and that was the very first one

    • DragonSilths

What??? If you have a 3DS go out and get Ocarina Of Time 3D today and play it.

Where did you get that at? Why MUST they keep manufacturing old product? How come as soon as something is discontinued, you cannot find it again unless it is used or sent to a discount lace, moron?

the other thread is closed so i’ll reply here

it’s common knowledge that after a product is discontinued the manufacturer has to have the parts in his warehouse for 5 years after last production this is to make sure that when your ipad breaks after 2 years you still can send it in for repair and if repair isn’t possible a replacment this is a law

OK, but PARTS and products are two different things.

      @Knowledgeiswhatsup
      i said
every company has to keep delivering components 5 years after last production you moron

and if you can read i never said they had to keep producing i said they had to keep delivering for 5 years that means they can have stock if you know what that is

All you need is an emulator and you already have it! Yeah, not in 16:9 HD, but clearer than it was before!

    • Nothing5555

Same with almost all wii games if you get the wii emulator.

  • Genesect4ssb4

My favorite Zeldas are Twilight Princess (for the story, but the graphics are a bonus) Skyward Sword (for that Ghirahim, and story) and OoT (the go to Zelda game).

  • aldo2410

When people hold the Wii u like the way it is in the front picture I always think it’s a 3ds.

  • lilmc01

you have a over attached mom

  • Ibi Salmon

It would be great if nintendo used similar control schemes for the game.

  • SH*TBLOCK

    1) I really liked this game when most were talking crap about it.

    2) This is just a mock up so don’t judge this as great or bad because THIS IS NOT THE REAL GAME!

    3) BUT…writing both statements above I am not that sold on this game yet. Yes I did like this game on the Gamecube and I would love to see it in HD, I just don’t think this is the best thing for Nintendo because it still won’t show off really what the WiiU can do (just like SMBU/Nintendoland hasn’t either), and it will like almost be a whole year after the U has come out. Yeah if Pikmin 3 does come out that will be the only true new HD IP from Nintendo, but it still isn’t the most popular by far. I really like and enjoy all the games mentioned but I really feel and want to see Nintendo to come out with one of the major Classic IP’s that truly shows off what Nintendo can do with the U.

    4) I still will get this game on the U just to experience this game again in HD and what ever new stuff they do to it..

downloadable add on dungeons for next Zelda?????
    just a thought

  • Madmagican

I hope Nintendo doesn’t make WW control like the DS games; it’s not that I don’t like the format, I just don’t think touch control is fit for console gaming
…I just want the remake to be worthy of the original

  • Michael Workman

I really disliked the controls in Phantom Hourglass. I hope they don’t use that method. Honestly, I’d love the wiimote/nunchuck format again. I think they hit swordplay right on the nose with Skyward Sword. But they’re going to have to utilize the gamepad somehow with the new game. I just really hope it isn’t the end of motion controls for Zelda.

    • Ibi Salmon

What about the controls for Spirit Tracks? Those were much better than in Phantom Hourglass.

  • Grammar Nazi 2000

    OoT sucks compared to SS.
