CNN Money breaks down the Wii U cost part by part [Video]

We’ve known for some time that Nintendo is selling the Wii U at a loss, which is why the company refuses to offer a price cut similarly to the 3DS when it launched. But just how much of a loss is Nintendo making on the Wii U? CNN Money did a tear down of all the parts and found that for the basic white Wii U, the total cost comes in at $228. That’s about $70 less than the $299 suggested retail price and while that doesn’t seem like a loss, one must take into account the years of research and development that went into creating the Wii U.

Still, this price difference between the actual cost of the unit and the price cuts we’ve seen from European retailers lead us to believe that there is a sweet spot for a price cut in the unit. As mentioned in the video, the Wii U sold 3 million units during its short stint in 2012, but by January 2013, only 100k units were sold.

LOL NINTENDO…. WIIU COST ABOUT $230

    • gobrowniesgo

Yeah but when the others come in high the Wii U will be more apealing

      • Avery Williams

I’m pretty sure Sony isn’t looking for a repeat of the PS3 price problem. Sony lost tons of money, fans and stock because of it. I think They’ve learned their lesson and I’m just as positive Microsoft will play it smart as well.

i say $400-$450 both Sony and MS. Of course they will most likely have 2-3 different versions for different gamers.

        • RyuNoHadouken

thats what i was telling my friends too…i gave a $399 and $499 package

          • gobrowniesgo

In theory..but the Wii U will still beat it by 100. and the games will most likely be cheaper. ps4 n Nxtbx will have em for 70.(rumor)..while Wii U stays at 60..

          • sithWiiU

PS4/360 games wont be 70. Sony already confirmed their games will be 60 bucks. If Sony games are 60, then 3rd party games will be 60 too. Why would PS4/Nextbox games be more expensive than Wii U games? According to Nintendrones, power wont be drastic, so it would not make sense. Use logic & educated guesses rather than just a guess.

          • gobrowniesgo

lt wasn’t a guess, l read it on ign and l even said (rumor)…

          • gobrowniesgo

Just like the ps4 and Nxtbx are going to require a constant internet connection. And there is an article that says the nxtbx will require you to install every game..

          • jay

according to sony fanboys power won’t be drastic either. No one is praising the ps4’s power.

          • Nothing5555

Well if they really wanted mind blowing graphics the PS4/Nextbox would be very expensive or the losses on each unit sold would be huge. Imagine the component cost of using Nvidia’s Titan GPU in a console.

          • RyuNoHadouken

games will still be 60 bucks…remember, i said it here first…lol…of course wii u will beat it in price…PS4s tech looks to be 4 times as powerful as Wii U

          • gobrowniesgo

We shall see when both specs are released..l just hope that the ps4 works not like ps3..

          • RyuNoHadouken

huh? My PS3 has never caused me any problems…or are you talkin about something else?

          • gobrowniesgo

            must be a new model..

          • That_one_guy99

My friend bought a 3 ps3 within a 2 week range and they all broke…..
He doesn’t even mistreat them and lots of friends of mine has had there controllers break

          • gobrowniesgo

            THIS ▲▲▲▲▲▲▲

          • Nothing5555

I had mine for a couple of years and it still works great. Your friend just has bad luck or I have extremely good luck.

          • RyuNoHadouken

its a 320gb slim i got a couple years ago as a gift

          • gobrowniesgo

Thats why. The old ones had tons of problems.

          • RyuNoHadouken

            oh, ok

      • Mark Thom

        :)

    • jay

plus manufacturing plus shipping plus labor plus tax laws plus store share.

  • RonaldRayguns

I wonder how much MS and Sonys consoles will be priced above the manufacturing cost.

    • gobrowniesgo

You really don’t want to know. They will come in at the 450-600 range..

      • RonaldRayguns

That would be fine to me, if the console cost 380-530 to make.

        • gobrowniesgo

that seems pretty high. but you could be right.

  • Frankie

Those are just estimates, it probably costs a little bit more. People do not understand that after Christmas no one is buying anything. The sales will pick up now because of tax returns and it not being directly after the holidays. People do not have money today like they did in 2006 when the last generation came out, obviously things are going to sell less.

    • Fred

Of coarse it costs more. Even if CNN is right about all those costs, that’s not including assembly/labor overhead, or shipping. Nevermind the fact that Nintendo doesn’t get $299 obviously Walmart/Best Buy/GameStop get a cut of that money or they wouldn’t be willing to sell the system.
Nintendo stated that they are taking a small loss, but they’ll turn a profit when the new Wii U owner buys one game so it’s a small loss, but a loss is a loss.

      • Fred

Which brings up the point, does anyone here know what retail stores pay for a Wii U (I’m hoping for an answer from someone that works for one of these stores and actually know guessing just spreads bad information)

        • AkaLink77

no, but on a different topic… Nin said that it takes 1 game to make a profit.

        • Chris Kattner

I can’t say i actually know, but typically the margin on electronics is 10-12% but that can very depending on how many the retailers buys. So for the basic set they might pay $260-270, That would leave $40 for shipping, storage, import duty ect. and i guess the cost of R&D as well as advertising.

          • Bob

The margin for video game consoles is smaller, between $15 – $20 USD. Retailers make most of their profits from software and accessories. This is just the base price, doesn’t include any possible discounts for buying in bulk.

      • Mickey Mouse

Actually Reggie was misquoted on the ‘one 1st party game sold turns a system to profit’ thing. So things are a little worse than you thought.

        • Fred

Really? Where did you read this? I’d love to read the details. If that’s true then it makes perfect sense that they are refusing to drop the price again.

          • memk

            its posted on here man

          • Fred

I read on here that here that 1 game sold turns a profit, but I never read on here that he had been misquoted. Which article is it? I must have missed it.

    • Nintedward

I know , CNN think they can Estimate a load of BS. Does this take into account the tax and shipping etc etc Nintendo has to pay for every Wiiu they make ?

Off topic – NEED FOR SPEED IS AMAZING!!!! . PS3 and 360 GO SIT IN THE CORNER , YOU’RE OLD AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD ABOUT YOURSELVES.

      • Avery Williams

        They were estimating hardware genius.
FYI: Old yes but PS3 and 360 are outselling Wii U. Why should they feel bad again?

        • Nintedward

Because they’re old and they have reached their limits. Need for speed U just proves that the wiiu has a great future ahead of it.

          • sithWiiU

By your logic every previous console should sit in the corner because they’re old, & this includes NES & SNES. Look dude, we all know you’re a Nintendrone, & unlike Nintendo, Sony is still supporting PS3. Dont be mad cause you wasted money on the Wii & now the Wii U. PS3 & 360 may be old, but I don’t see GTA5, Bioshock, or Remember Me being released on Wii U…or Saints Row 4 & Dead Island. So how about you stfu & you sit in the corner?

          • Nintedward

            GTFO troll. I have a PS3 and a 360 and I will be geting PS4 and 720 day 1 also , but Nintendo is my number 1.

The point I was making is that Need for speed most wanted U (which I am playing right now) destroys the ps3 and 360 version. Whilst that’s nothing to brag about cus the wiiu is obviously much newer. Idiots like you who said the wiiu somehow has worse graphics than the ps3 and 360 have to go and sit in the corner and wear a dunce hat.

            Retard.

          • gobrowniesgo

l don’t see them going to the ps4 or Nxtbx. they were built for last gen systems. You musta forgot that it takes time to remake a game thats not built for the system.

          • Avery Williams

Except the fact that PS3 and 360 are outselling it. Look, Nintendo’s future is still in question at this point. Like it or not they have alot of work ahead of them if they want to stay relevent.

          • Nintedward

”Nintendo’s future is still in question at this point. Like it or not they have alot of work ahead of them if they want to stay relevent.”

So you have never heard of the 3DS ? It’s the fastest selling game hardware of all time. Hardly irrelivant you idiot. AND the wiiu has been out for 4 months. In those 4 months it has sold more than the ps3 and 360 did in their first 4 months. People just have WAY WAY too high expectations. When games like wii fit U , Pikmin 3 , Game and wario and much more launch (very soon) the wiiu is gunna sell and sell and sell.

It’s on about 3.5 Million sold worldwide now , if it gets to 8 million plus by the end of 2013 , it’s has a successfull year. and I’m pretty certain it will achieve that number.

Mostly the ”doom wiiu” articles are written by dick heads trying to get hits on the internet.

Stay relevant lol. Nintendo is the most relevant company in gaming.

          • Avery Williams

My argument does not include the DS it’s not a console. Nintendo has the notion that innovation means everything. It doesn’t. Its good but you can’t put all your eggs in that basket. When you do other companies (MS/Sony) offer alternatives that make consumers think twice. Nintendo has never responded like MS/Sony have to it. Kinect and Move came as a response to Wii. They adapt, Nintendo doesn’t PS3 and 360 still have more features to offer consumers, features they’ve had for almost a decade that still elude Wii U. Sure Nintendo is still relevant but they could very well not be later. .

          • Fred

Kinect came as a response to Wii and it’s the only reason the 360 is still selling

Edit:I guess I was misunderstood. I wasn’t trying to say that gamers no longer like the Xbox it was more along the lines of most gamers already have one so they aren’t the ones buying them. Kinect came along and expanded the customer base of the Xbox so people are still wanting to buy it.

          • Avery Williams

That is obviously wrong. Kinect and Move were made to attract casual gamers. Sony and MS have always had a strong fan base.

Edit: 100% correct. Again, sorry about the name calling

          • Fred

What are you talking about. Yes Kinect and Move were made to attract casual gamers that were only buying the Wii. And in the case of Kinect it worked and tons of casual gamers suddenly wanted an Xbox for Kinect. I agree with you so why would you call me stupid?

          • Avery Williams

Ok, sorry for the stupid remark. Your 1st comment sounded like Kinect is the ONLY reason Xbox is selling. That i disagree with. Consumers want more than games and Nintendo needs to understand this. Something as simple as a dvd player or cross game chat can sway consumers. So why does Nintendo continue to wait on features Sony and MS have had for years. MS and Sony’s Online communities are massive because they invested in it early. Nintendo waits till 6+ years later. And out of curiosity and not to start anything does the Wii U have a DVD player?

          • Fred

No Wii U doesn’t play DVDs or Blu-Rays. I don’t know why they didn’t not to do the DVDs, but I read that even though they could have done the Blu-Rays without any additional hardware cost they didn’t because of the royalty they’d have to pay to Sony so to try and keep the costs down (and I’m sure to keep from paying a competitor) they didn’t do it.

          • Avery Williams

Wait, so any tech that wants the ability to play Bluray discs has to pay Sony?! Sony owns the rights to Bluray?! Those smart bastards.

          • Fred

Yes, they actually invented Bluray. That’s one of the reasons there’s a Bluray player in the PS3, they were trying to get it to catch on over HDdvd

          • Richard Yates

            Well said!

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Johnson/100001559271785 Mark Johnson

not trying to start an argument, but PS Vita actually was outselling 3DS after the vita price cut in japan

          • beerkin

            For one week……..

          • http://twitter.com/DJDALLYDEE Dallas Scott Cooper

You say this as if the company is riding on little bits of fumes of cash. The company has billions in reserves. Their future is pretty much set in stone. And nobody just lets games like The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, Picmin, Star Fox, Metroid, and so on become irrelevant.

          • Avery Williams

i say it as if Nintendo is losing consumers because of decisions its making. Its that simple. Why is it so hard to understand. Im not disputing the fact that Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, Picmin, Star Fox, Metroid are awsome franchises or that Nintendo has cash on hand. The point is without consumers it wont mean squat, and you get consumers with competitive features, games and advertisment. Nintendo doesn’t have the games (right now) Nintendo refuses to adapt features that MS and Sony Have had for years and i’ve seen one commercial for Mario Bros U, not the console. What do you think is going to happen when the competition is released? My point is and continues to be that Nintendo needs to shape up. Money wont mean anything without consumers, its that simple!

          • http://twitter.com/DJDALLYDEE Dallas Scott Cooper

            Dude, Nintendo IS gaming…

          • TCar

They are outselling because they have been out for 6 years. The Wii U is new and, unfortunately, they don’t have the large gamer base built yet. When the system starts selling better, which it will, you can then draw a much cleaner and better picture on this matter.

          • Avery Williams

You obviously didn’t read what i just wrote.

          • TCar

I actually did read it. However, the comment I left was suppose to be attached to your reply to my original post, not this one. I for one am glad that Nintendo hasn’t followed MS or Sony. I personally don’t care about the extra junk that comes with the other systems. I got my Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, games and that is all I need!

          • TCar

For me, if Nintendo fails, I stop playing video games.

          • Avery Williams

They don’t have to follow per say, just keep up is what im getting at. And just out of curiosity, have you ever tried the “Extra Junk” for yourself? I get that not everyone wants or needs extras but the majority do. Majority = More sales.

          • TCar

I have never owned a system outside Nintendo. I don’t need my system to play my music when the games come with their own, I don’t need to talk to strangers or friends with headsets, I don’t need trophies or scoreboards and most of the time I don’t need to be able to play against random people when I have the CPU to play against. For most of the casual audience, and myself who I consider more “hardcore”, the extras just aren’t a deal breaker. I understand why some people want it, but I don’t understand why they demand it. It does translate into more sales but what happens when there is nothing left to add? When it comes down to what the video game machines are, Nintendo makes the games that are fun and make you go back. The extra stuff, isn’t what makes the game fun.

          • ICHI

I can agree that nintendo have a lot of work ahead of them but then I think that of all the consoles. People think the Wii U here in the UK is expensive at £250, PS4 was announced to be around the same price as the PS3 at launch, so £450 for a machine which is apparently (according to some NVIDIA chap) running a two year old GPU! I have a PC nowadays as steam is awesome and I have a Wii U for games which just work better on consoles and Ninty stuff. I have a PS3 too and can see why they’re still selling well, people who want a blu ray player, can run on demand shows and even use it as a TV tuner as well as having games around for the kids at £150 (sometimes £70 second hand) it’s a bargain. Sony with PS4 are currently saying they’re going for the gamers again, is all well and good but the last gen went on too long and lots of gamers are now on PC’s (most of my old XBOX clan have moved over) so what does it have to offer I can’t find elsewhere without forking out £450? This game is now Microsofts to lose, E3 is going to be exciting for once! Lets hope it’s not running Windows 8 :P

          • Avery Williams

            You are 100% correct.

          • gobrowniesgo

Crysis 3 proved they were dying!

        • http://twitter.com/DJDALLYDEE Dallas Scott Cooper

Sucks for people who buy a PS360 now and end up having to buy a new system because PS360 gets discontinued by this holiday season.

      • Metal_Man_v2

Off topic- let’s try and not start a console war in the comments section if it can be avoided. Some people like different consoles, it’s ok.

Edit: too late, happened anyways. Shame, because it would have been so easily avoided had someone not intentionally tried to start one.

        • Nintedward

Sorry about that :P I couldn’t help myself , after all the stick wiiu has been getting about graphics from Sony and Microcock fanboys , This time Nintendo fans have the last laugh

          Muhahah……. MUAHahahaahaha …… MUAHAHAHAHHAHA :)

          • Metal_Man_v2

What’s done is done. But I can’t understand why you would intentionally start a console war. We’re trying really hard to not look like fanboys on this site, and that doesn’t help.

          • jay

wanna know something funny? Long read coming…..

ms and sony fanboys have short term memory. Let me show you how:

The smartest thing Nintendo did was developing the Wii with inferior graphics and removing HD.

YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT. Having mediocre graphics by 2006 standards was GENIUS.

When the ps360 came out they tried their hardest to have bleeding edge graphics cards for that era. So the jump from xbox/ps2 to 360/ps3 was big.

Fast forward to 2013 and Wii U’s graphics are a DRASTICALLY HUGE leap from the Wii (plus HD), quite possibly the biggest leap of all time.

Now sony and ms are stuck in a rut. YES the graphics cards of the ps4 and 720 will be better than the Wii U’s BUT, how much better are they than their own last gen consoles? I see a problem here. I certainly will NOT buy a ps4 for the graphics jump alone.

REALISTICALLY, I see the ps4’s graphical leap the smallest of all time. ps3/ps4 will be like comparing the ps2 to the GameCube. Mark my words on that one!!

Now here is where the sony/ms fanboys come in. Why do we always hear “nah nah the Wii Us graphics are only slightly better than 360 lol!”

But in 2006 the ps3/360 were just that. New consoles with games that had slightly better graphics than their own last gen. Why the sudden change of attitude now?!

Remember gamers praising Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube and comparing the graphics to Kameo or any other 360 launch title?
(Resident Evil 4 coming late into the Gamecubes cycle/Kameo coming early on the 360’s cycle.)

Remember when the ps3 launched, gamers complained that the graphics weren’t good enough to warrant a ps3 purchase? Remember playstation fanboys defending the system saying “just wait until devs learn and fully utilize the cell technology. THEN you will see better looking games”. Remember?

Remember 360 fanboys admitting the launch titles for 360 weren’t too great visually but defended it by saying “Wait til Gears of War and Halo 3…”

            THEY HAD A POINT.

But Now the Wii U comes with slightly better graphics than last gen JUST as the ps360 arrived. Yet Nintendo haters scream “Lol the graphics barely better than 360!!” But weren’t 360 graphics just that? “graphics barely better than the original xbox?”
Remember folks. We’re comparing games from the LATE ps3’s60’s cycle to Wii U launch games. Seems unfair doesn’t it. But doesn’t this further prove that the Wii U’s hardware is Faaar superior to the last gen?

            WHY THE HATE NOW?

            Why the sudden Amnesia?

The real winners are the Nintendo fans as they will see a HUGE leap between the Wii and Wii U. While sony/ms fans will see a minuscule change. Makes me think Nintendo went with an underpowered Wii for this reason alone!! lol

            I’ll end by saying this:

“Just wait until you see the graphics of future games like Mario 3D, Zelda, Retros Project, and Smash Bros” ;)

          • Guest

You win the best comment award. It has valid points, real facts, logic, and a clear voice that gets straight to the point. No lies and no rumors, unlike practically every other argument over the Wii U’s true power. All comments should be like this.

          • jay

            Awesome Thanks!

It’s just funny how many Nintendo haters are hypocrites. Wii U is EASILY running games that the ps3 has to squeeze every last bit to achieve.

The Wii U is just getting started.

sony/ms can talk tech speak all they want but let your EYES show you the truth. The gameplay sony showed off for the ps4 was a tiny bump from the ps3, the rest were TECH DEMOs that were revealed last year.

  • Brett Butler

    DOOM AND GLOOM BABY, YEEEEAH!!!!
I’m getting used to these articles on Wiiudaily

    • Fred

What does this article have to do with doom and gloom?

  • Fred

$6 for 2GB of RAM? Where are they buying this I want some?
Even if you assume that CNN got the pricing right Nintendo doesn’t get $299 when they sell a basic Wii U. If Best Buy, GameStop, and Walmart don’t make money when they sell them they won’t sell them so the next question is how much of a markup are the stores putting on it?

    • gobrowniesgo

atleast 10-15% plus the tax, so Nintendo is makin like 20 on a system n the store makes 50

      • Adrian

        You are completely wrong.

        • gobrowniesgo

if cnn is right, how else would it work? The retailer has to make some money n l’m sure it’s around 10-20%…You have better numbers?

          • Adrian

You are making guesses and not including the cost of labor, shipping, manufacturing, or research and development. Nintendo is likely taking a loss over all, and retailers are likely taking a small gain.

          • gobrowniesgo

l’m sure thier cost of production is added in to the price, but if not then l could see that.

          • Adrian

The $228 is just the cost of the parts. None of the overhead.

          • gobrowniesgo

then they are taking a loss.Thats ok though. Atleast they stick to thier principals.. Quality over Quantity..And they will continue to support it. As soon as the 1st party games start hittin it will sell well..

      • Cerus98

Maybe I’m reading this wrong but sales tax goes to the state, not the store. It is not part of a stores profit.

        • gobrowniesgo

yes l know…. but the retailer adds that in to thier profit margin ln theory..l could be wrong just makes sense that the store would want that covered in the margin…

          • Cerus98

Well again, tax is simply money they are collecting for their state so it would not be counted as profit nor figured into their sales numbers. Retailers buy wholesale and therefore pay no tax on the items they buy and sell. So if they buy a large quantity of TVs from Samsung for $500 a piece they pay no tax on their purchase and then sell it for $750 thereby making a profit of $250 and the tax they collect is passed on to the state. Wholesale prices vary considerably. Sometimes there is very little markup sometimes a lot.

          • gobrowniesgo

            O I C… Well that makes sense..

    • Tecpedz94

      China..

  • Link Slayer

if there taking a 30 buck loss that makes sence because they may be selling it to retailers for 200. I dont know just a thought.

$228 is what it cost Nintendo to make it don’t forget package and shipping of it and they don’t sell it for $299 the retailers do. The retailers buy it with a certain ammount of built in profit margin (say they buy it for $250 from Nintendo) . This is why Nintendo sells it for a loss add in advertisement (although there isn’t any) and Nintendo is out probably $260-$270 ( that is a guesstimate) a console that’s why one game nets them a profit.

    • Guest

Haha, who is in charge of marketing at NOA? Man, you’re right, not one bit of advertisements. Should air during walking dead, or Adventure Time or something. Man.

      • Zuxs13

Well to be fair they don’t really have anything to advertise other than Lego city. I doubt too many walking dead fans would want to see that commercial lol.
I agree though they should market it in that time slot. I don’t mind Nintendo and their kid immage with games but they need to wake up and appeal to the other 75% of gamers (the ones with all the money) . Parents don’t watch Saturday morning cartoons with their kids.

        • jay

Doesn’t matter, They can advertise the ZombiU bundle during Walking Dead, seeing as Nintendo fans admit not too many people have a Wii U in the first place. Many people still are unaware of games like ZombiU and New Super Mario Bros U.

          • Zuxs13

            Too bad they won’t.

          • jay

Yeah Nintendos marketing always sucked no matter what people say. I remember them playing a Star Fox commercial during one of those judge courtroom shows. WTF??

And have you seen those crappy Wii U kiosks??

          • Zuxs13

Yeah they are terrible. There should be multiple demos on there to included Nintendo land and they should get wii sports U on there soon even if its one damn event, that will help people see what it is and buy it.

          • jay

no kidding and every game that has a “video”, when you click on it, it just shows screenshots in low res. WTF??!!?!!

          • gobrowniesgo

have you seen the ps4 or next box kiosks?

          • jay

            Nope, NO ONE has.

They can be much better or worse.

But the problem remains. Wii Us kiosks are lackluster. They’re better off just popping in a game like Lego City or NintendoLand.

          • gobrowniesgo

l only checked out the controller at one of em. didn’t play it. But at my Gamestop they have a display n l watched zombie u and mario u on there n l was convinced it’s way more powerful than the 360.

          • gobrowniesgo

There were tons of people who bought one on tues. for MH3! I think 80% of miiverse got either NFS or MH3 or both..can’t wait to see the numbers from this week..

a rarity these days. most parents dont even know what their kids watch or play for games.

at my house i am the kid and the parent.

  • $41809923

i just read that something big is coming to the wii u but nintendo is not saying what could it be? hope its a metroid wii u

    • Fred

Where did you read this? I want to read it too

    • gobrowniesgo

We probably won’t find out till E3.. lf it is major anyways..Who knows they could’ve made a deal with EA n they have the sale to make up for all the games we didn’t get..

    • jay

Something Big is always coming from Nintendo. It’s probably X or Retros new IP.

  • Jonas

to get this straight. i support nintendo, but they really messed up this launch. And cutting the prices wont help. They need more commercials and more software. Then the console will sell better and they will get more 3rd party support. But they just look over to us from japan, where they sell a lot anyway. The problem is, japan is not the only country they are working. They should put the headquarters of nintendo and by that i mean the real headquartesr to us or europe to get a little more independent.

  • david jarman

If you can’t afford something then you…well….you can’t afford it! That’s why I save up for something I really want. Here something fun to do. All the components for the ps4 you can purchase right now. Look up these three components. The CPU, gpu and the ram. You’d be surprise how cheap they are not. Now factor in the cost of the controller plus any other components and you’re going to have yourself one expensive console. I say that the wiiu is at a fair price for the tech compared to the other console. Remember nintendo nextgen is not just having better graphics but a better experience. So far I am loving it. Need for speed not only has better graphics, but I love the added features with the game pad.

    • sithWiiU

NFS has better graphics compared to 6 year old consoles…..
not only that, but plenty of reviewers said the added co op features, while fun, gets old quick. You can play on the pad? Whoop de do. I buy a console to play on my TV, I buy handhelds too play away from the TV. Nintendo hasn’t done anything spectacular, & Apple & Amazon does the tablet thing better too.

      • Fred

Are you kidding me? Some games work great on a tablet, but others NEED a joystick and buttons.

      • gobrowniesgo

Why are Sony fanboyz so scared of Nintendo? Maybe they should complain to Sony for being generic. They had the most power but couldn’t hang graphically with the 360..

      • WiiUltra

WOW, You are so butthurt about the Wii U having better games than your precious box. Haha

      • david jarman

It’s suppose to have better graphics compared to six year old consoles, idiot! I suppose when ps4 comes out youre not going to say the same especially for games like watchdog which will be on both ps4 and ps3. I’m referring to the tech is not bad for it’s price and that’s why I mentioned nds. It’s people like you who are going to keep gaming from ever really progressing cause all you care about is how pretty the graphics is and not what else can we do to enhance it. I can tell you don’t own one by your stupid comment. Apple and amazon tablets don’t have shoulder buttons, triggers, d-pad or analog sticks. At least nintendo is trying. Had nintendo never tried you’d still be playing with two buttons and a d-pad. Nintendo added the 4 button layout with shoulder buttons on the super nes and nintendo 64 controller brought the analog thumb stick to the game pad. So I appreciate nintendo for constantly trying to change the gaming world. Playing off the tv so someone else can use cause I’m not a selfish a$$hole is not only a delight but the rest of the house hold appreciates it. If you don’t like the wii u then get off this site. I don’t care if you’re a nintendo fan. If you don’t like the wii u then leave cause this is a wii u fan site.

Edit: I also compare with the 6 yr old console cause there’s a lot of people who giving the wii u a hard time because of the sloppy rushed ports that weren’t exactly toe to toe on par. However just love when games like nfs or trine 2 does better then people say that same stupid comment “The Xbox and ps3 are six years old.” Which is why wii u is next gen. The graphics are getting better while using less energy and the way you play is starting to change as more developers put their time into it. Wii u uses a modified CPU tri core with edram making it sufficient and modern. Plus it use a gpgpu which can handle a lot of what the CPU use to do but only better. Ps4 is using stock CPU and gpu nothing modified so is this next gen.? What? Because its in a console and not in low/mid end gaming pc. Whatever!

  • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

Ok… if this is true Nintendo should be ready to pull of a price cut

  • Johny

    good article

  • wiiucompl

Nintendo Wii U OS is free?

  • Adrian

This is impossible (as it would be suicide for sony) but what if the PS4 had an MSRP of $1000? Hahaha, oh man that’d be hilarious. I personally won’t get a PS4 for at least 4 years, regardless of the price. Reason: I buy 90% of my games used in the $10-$30 dollar range :).

    • Metal_Man_v2

It’s your choice, but you aren’t helping the developers or companies out AT ALL by doing that.

      • Nothing5555

I do the same as Adrian…I wait for a price drop on consoles before buying and either buy used or older games when the prices go down.

  • bizzy gie

I recently read an article on PS4Daily and in one part a writer wrote that he/she was expecting the PS4 to be $400. He/she claimed that that would be cheap. However, when discussing the Wii U, which cost $100 LESS, it needs a price drop.

Now if both consoles cost $400 and everyone was talking about how the Wii U needs a price, it’d be mildly insulting to Nintendo with all the hard work they put into the system, but VERY understandable. However, that’s NOT the case.

EVERYONE is expecting a price cut for this MUCH cheaper console, but $100 MORE is considered CHEAP for Sony’s new toy. That’s not fair at all and yes I’m highly aware that internal specs play a large role in this, but the GamePad is more powerful than the PS4’s controller (which means its most likely more powerful than the next Xbox’s controller as well).

But I know, I know. The GamePad is a gimmick right and PS4’s large RAM is what REAL innovation looks like.

    • Metal_Man_v2

It’s not like whatever price Sony gives the PS4 console will be pulled out of nowhere, it will be close to what it costs to manufacture. You admit that the PS4 is costly to make, yet don’t understand why it might be ok to price it higher? Why is that?

Personally, I don’t think that the Wii U needs a price drop. I’m fine with $300 for a basic or $350 for a deluxe. I’m also fine with the PS4 costing around $400.

      • bizzy gie

That’s not what I was saying. It makes sense for PS4 to cost whatever expensive price it’s going to cost. It’s a PC for crying out loud. However, if people are claiming that $400 is cheap for the PS4, then certainly a hundred bucks LESS shouldn’t be considered TOO expensive for the Wii U.

        • Metal_Man_v2

Your original post was a little confusing, but I get you now. The only thing I can think of is that people don’t know how costly the Wii U’s gamepad is, and how much tech is actually in it. A lot of people still remain uneducated on the gamepad (lack of effective advertising) so it could be that.

          • gobrowniesgo

l learned the controls and i’m typing this on the gamepad. lt’s not as bad as l thought. l came from 360 to the U. lt’s hard to play the xbx now, the U spoiled me.

          • jay

Yeah I remember going from Wii to Xbox and the controls were horrendous!! I kept saying “Dammit!! Why can’t Bioshock be on the Wii! in 480p I don’t care!!

          • gobrowniesgo

Madden was the worst ever! l thought l was throwing to Y but it went to X..lol

          • Metal_Man_v2

It’s not that the game pad is hard to use, it’s that many potential buyers aren’t educated on the gamepad to know how it can be used, how much tech is in it, and how much it costs to make. The gamepad is great!

          • gobrowniesgo

l just figured that people would think it was bulky. l was sceptical at first. But l’m glad l picked one up.

          • jay

you need to read slower. you also misread my post on the last article.

          • Metal_Man_v2

His original post was confusing, so I asked him what he meant. He reframed it, and I agree with what he is saying. I’m also not the only person who was confused by his post. But we’ve cleared it all up.

Your post on the other article wasn’t specified at all, and caused confusion amongst many people. You need to get over yourself and stop calling people morons when you don’t know how to get your facts straight and present them well.

        • gobrowniesgo

          sorry misread it..

    • Glennthegreat

The thing is “hardcore gamers” care less about a controller they deem unnecessary, which brings us back to a console that is mildly equivalent to this generation in specs/hardware. Thus, people want price to either match the hardware or PROVE why this fancy controller is a must-have. The problem is there isn’t a single game on Wii U released or shown that really says “OMG, i must have this system so i may play with this controller”.

Sony warrants the price with their hardware. Same with MS. And plus, their online offerings are well polished and gaming model is proven. Nintendo has no excuse for shortcomings here.

      • jay

“The problem is there isn’t a single game on Wii U released or shown that really says “OMG, i must have this system so i may play with this controller”.

        oh the irony!! lol

There isn’t a single game on ps4 shown that says “OMG, i must have this system so i may play with the touchpad controller!”

      • gobrowniesgo

Have you seen MH3U?? NFSMWU? ME3U? Even BLOPS2 on the U?

      • bizzy gie

You do know I’m talking about the consoles that haven’t released yet right? You know nothing of their online service because they haven’t released yet. And Sony warrants the price with their hardware alone, but Nintendo doesn’t with their controller (which is hardware)? Basically your saying Nintendo needs games to justify its cost, but Sony only needs hardware alone to justify its cost. That makes sense.

    • jay

lol I just mentioned this on the last article and morons like Metal_Man_v2 didn’t have the intelligence to understand!!

      • Metal_Man_v2

No, you listed launch prices, thought you didn’t say they were launch prices, and tried to show how the Wii U was cheaper. It was confusing because the launch prices are for the old consoles are irrelevant because they are obviously cheaper now.

        • jay

I didn’t think I had to mention it.

The point being the troll beanerslayer was ignoring the fact that the competition launched at much higher prices.

His logic(or anyones) logic should be argued using their own. Fair is fair.

It’s like me bitching saying “the 3DS is overpriced cause I can get a psp for much cheaper hurr durr.”

hmm… might have to post that over there.

          • Metal_Man_v2

“His logic(or anyones) logic should be argued using their own. Fair is fair.”

Never a good idea. For future reference, you should always use better logic to outwit someone and prove a point. I understand that beanerslayer was spouting nonsense, but trolling a troll does absolutely nothing.

          • jay

No I hear you, But understand I DISPROVED HIM.

And that was the point of my posting, not to retroll but to DISPROVE him. Exposing his own hypocrisy.

  • jay

    oh geez Nintendo!!

    DROP THE DAMN BASIC MODEL!!

Drop the word “Deluxe” and offer the white color as a 32GB model.
Maybe pack the white version with NintendoLand and the black version with ZombiU.
Box them both as simply “Wii U” NOT “Basic” or “Deluxe”.

    Pikmin 3 NOW!!!

Add MORE playable demos in those lame ass Wii U kiosks!! I swear they only let you play Rayman(a delayed game). And show you screenshots of games. LAME!!
No wonder no one is sold on a Wii U!!

ADVERTISE TVii, Miiverse and the damn WII U!!!

Make MotionPlus MANDATORY for every Wii U game that utilizes the Wiimote, this should have been the case at launch.
Also release a new Wii Remote(yes a NEW one), they already have the patents for an even MORE immersive form of motion control, I hope the announce a new Wiimote or Nunchuck at E3.

Announce Wii Sports HD with tons of sports, Miiverse and ONLINE multiplayer!!

Some fanboys say “Nintendo is waiting for more games before they advertise” but with the arrival of Monster Hunter, Lego City and Need for Speed Most Wanted, there’s enough good games now, time to play hardball!!

I swear I love Nintendo but they’re only a few decisions away from having the greatest console of all time or another overlooked piece of tech like the Gamecube.

EDIT: Sorry for Digressing, maybe I should move this comment to the appropriate article… or not?

    • gobrowniesgo

NO WAY!! Screw them damn motion controls! lf anything keep them optional! Why do we have to forced to work when we come home from work to play a game? And they are waiting till E3 to do anything! Especially if they want to compete..

      • jay

Dude how lazy are you? I’d rather have a REALISTIC gaming experience than button mashing. Ever played Donkey Kong Jungle Beat? WHOOO!

        • gobrowniesgo

NO! That is why l skipped the wii. l’m an older gamer. lf it wasn’t for us old gamers you’d have none to play! I’m good with it being optional just as long as they don’t push it on me. if u want motion controls that are realistic get a kinect!

          • jay

how old are you? A little exercise is good for everyone and if you’re young enough to work than a little motion shouldn’t be of any challenge.

AND GOD NO!! Kinect is far from realistic!!!!!!

          • gobrowniesgo

            32..and l’m in the trades..

      • X3Charlie

No, what he said was that in games with motion control, to make it mandatory to use motion plus, since your already moving the controller around at least make it more useful.

        • gobrowniesgo

umm, every Wii U game has motion and controller control… l’m fine with them keeping it optional. Now as far as Wii games on the U that is understandable..

    • Avery Williams

Ok this guy has some sense. Despite being a Nintendo fan even he realizes that at this rate they will run themselves into the ground. Why cant all of Nintendos fans be this rational. Geez

      • Michael Jurado

we are rational nintendo has told us they are hard at work at making games and that they’ll take a bit longer to make due to the quality that nintendo likes to give. it’s all you haters that are being irrational with you guys saying there are no games to play when there are around 50 or 60 to choose from not counting the eshop

        • Avery Williams

Im nowhere near hating and i never said it doesn’t have games to play. The point (although you might have to take your fanboy hat off to grasp it) is Nintendo has a problem that needs to be addressed. That is it. Stop over analyzing. General true statement

          • Michael Jurado

they are addressing the problem since n64 days 3rd party support has been next to non existent they go and try to patch things up with 3rd party and everyone goes why would i get this game on wii u when i already have my ps3 or 360 so basically if they started out strong with first party support we would repeat n64 and gamecube so there you go sir suck it i know nintendo is going to give me my 1st party games i can wait

        • sithWiiU

          LOL! 50 to 60?1 Dafuq!

    • jay

Sorry for Digressing, maybe I should move this comment to the appropriate article… or not?

        you’re good.. l didn’t mean to be a dick..

        • jay

no. i didnt take it that way. :) you’re good.

  • Glennthegreat

Until they cut the console to $249 (basic)/$299 (deluxe), it’s not going to sell to the “casual market” at all. The hardcore fans aren’t coming until Zelda U or Metroid U. Period!

  • Veries Seals

I dont know why Wii U daily has just been promoting negative new this month but 5 or 6 games have dropped this month alone and I have only seen 2 reviews out of the 5 on Wii U daily and IGN. Why they are doing so much complaining they should be reviewing our games and giving us up to date information and not rumors and speculation. Not saying this particular article is not true but they have been complaining about the 2 month Wii U game Drought and it has been over since early this month.

  • Møhåmmęd Jårmøn

When you read the numbers, saying that the WiiU is failing sounds ridiculous. Compare it to when PS3 and Xbox first came out. Didn’t WiiU hit 3 million sales in 45 days??? Didn’t it take 5 months for anyone else to do that???

  • John Madsen

and microsofts xbox 360 are ripping customers off right now there 99.00 xbox 360 requires a 249.00 2 year xbox live subscription access to your credit cards this seems much for q 99.00 console huh

  • Jorge Almeida

We can’t forget about the shipping, and retailers profits, the tax etc.

  • Glen Bradford

3DS? What other options do people have? It is only because people have birthdays at least 1 handheld must get sold and it is not the 3DS by choice it is the 3DS because they don’t have much choice,

The wii U is better in graphics but as a brand it is a lot less of a brand than PS or Xbox when people think about buying a game system, ps/Xbox gamers are very happy with what they already have and will only move on to a updated model to what they already have because of all the online friend they have and to move over all their downloaded games they have downloaded over the years

Who is Nintendo trying to sell to? ps and Xbox is home to so many amazing games.

This is why people will buy PS4 and Xbox 720, even if they don’t sell very fast the PS3 and Xbox 360 are going to be sold long after ther next systems come out.

The new systems will have new gameplay to offer and with the Xbox you will get to use any phone or ipad more and more as a 2nd screen, the 8BGs of fast RAM alone is a big improvement we can have bigger and better worlds

WiiU as nothing to make a Xbox or ps gamer to change brands

  • http://originalgamster.com/ guitarded77

Nintendo needs to add a trophy/achievement system, step up online, get Miiverse connectivity to Facebook and Twitter for sharing, and get some real 3rd party support which has been dead since post launch. The Wii U can’t compete against the PS4 and 720, so it needs to make itself the console which sits beside the alternatives. First party titles will come, but it’s the other stuff Nintendo needs. They also need to be more open with their users and have a blog and forum for users to interact with Nintendo, and stop being in damage control mode all the time.

  • MrSpoiler15

    Fucking Nintendo.
