Miyamoto talks about the evolution of Luigi

luigi

We already know from the last Nintendo Direct that Nintendo is planning on giving Mario’s brother Luigi a full spot light this year, between Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and New Super Luigi U. Shigeru Miyamoto recently spoke to MTV about Mario’s brother, speaking about his past and present and what we can expect into the future.

The most interesting fact gleaned from the interview is Miyamoto admitting that the definitive moment Luigi became his own character was in Luigi’s Mansion for Gamecube. Of course Luigi was more than just a palette swap by Super Mario Bros. 2 here in the United States, but this was the first time Luigi was given his own spotlight in a game that was more than just educational (Mario is Missing).

Other interesting points in the interview include a discussion about the upcoming New Super Luigi U, where Miyamoto informs us that Luigi doesn’t get his own story, but all the levels have been designed for his strengths. Miyamoto is hesitant to say whether Mario will have an appearance, but we’re eagerly awaiting the release of the expansion pack, nonetheless. If you’re interested in reading the rest of the interview, you can find it in the source link below.

I thought the “Mario” in New Super Mario Bros. was their last name (i.e. Mario Mario, Luigi Mario).

    • Clide88

That was refuted by Nintendo (Miyamoto himself, if I’m not mistaken). Their last name is NOT Mario.

      • bizzy gie

Then why “Mario BROS.”? Let’s say you have a brother named Chris. When together, everyone addresses you as the “Chris Bros.” even though your first name is Clide. I don’t get how both would be addressed under one’s FIRST name. I could understand the Johnson Bro’s because that’s a last name, but naming two people under ONE of their first names doesn’t make much sense. I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m just saying I don’t understand why Nintendo would give the game that name.

        • dylanbob121

          mind=blown

          • Nathaniel Lopez

Well that’s because when it comes to the siblings of popular people, for example, people would say, hey aren’t you Mario’s brother..?

So I guess it would be easier to say “Hey look, it’s the Mario Bros! instead of “Hey look, It’s Mario and His Brother!…umm what’s his name…Linguini?”

          • dylanbob121

I loled at your last part XD

          • Nathaniel Lopez

Thanks, I have a problem of replying to the wrong person this was meant for bizzy but glad you liked it!

          • bizzy gie

It’s okay. I still read it.

        • Madmagican

Mario is also their last name (according to that horrible movie at least)

          • bizzy gie

Well, I already made mention of that, but it was debunked pretty quickly.

          • PacoJerte

            Their last name is Segale.

          • http://www.facebook.com/chrisskates Kwis Wose

            Dumb

          • Clide88

That’s how the “Mario Mario” and “Luigi Mario” thing came about…but I think Nintendo is trying to move as far away from the atrocity that was the Mario film as possible.

As to why they titled the game Super Mario Bros., I don’t think that’s nearly the weirdest thing about the game (although most others could be explained by POTENTIAL drug use, I suppose).

        • http://www.facebook.com/chrisskates Kwis Wose

This! I posted a response before I saw this, But yeah dude, Mario Mario and Luigi Mario it is!

          • Bill Wildaman

Haha, the premise of mario is “a plumber from brooklyn finds a warp while working on a drain. He’s magically taken to a world where you need shrooms to survive. You fight turtles that fly and a dragon that throws hammers and turns into a jellyfish when he dies. Not to mention whatever the hell goombas are. Then you have to dodge fire, FIRE under the water! And finally you rescue a princess” and you guys are confused by their last name?

        • Brian Poole

I mean… “Mario BROS.”… “Donkey Kong”…? Something tells me Nintendo didn’t care much about the accuracy of titles back then, (especially since SMB was supposed to be the final game for the Famicom). Though playing as a donkey would make for a particularly hard game. Donkeys climbing ropes… that’s just silly.

Like how “Donkey” is just mistranslated and was meant to imply “Stupid”, it could just be some confusion where in Japan the surname is the first name. The Japanese commonly refer to each other by their surname. Maybe having Mario as his first name, to them it sounded more appropriate to say “Mario Brothers”.

      • http://www.facebook.com/chrisskates Kwis Wose

Then it shouldn’t be called Mario brothers. I on the other hand, don’t care what Miyamoto says, They ARE Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.

        • Lazara the Last

          Everyone cares what Miyamoto says!

        • mralloverit

You should care what he says, because Miyamoto created Mario and Luigi. He can call them AND the game, what ever he wants. Miyamoto stated a long time ago, that their last name is not Mario. So your comment, regardless of what you believe, is wrong.

    • WiiUltra

No, that would be stupid in my opinion. I would prefer them to have no last name instead of Mario if they even have one. The Mario Bros. is a team name, because after all, they are a team. They could have named them the Jump Bros. or something but Mario Bros. is more iconic.

    • sithWiiU

Does it matter? Not as if any Mario game has a story.

      • Gamefreak361

        Insult?

  • Captain Falcon

    You’d think they’d release a green 3DS by now…

    • DragonSilths

There’s a Mint Green one coming to Japan.

      • dylanbob121

Yeah, but what about AMERICA AND EUROPE

        • Steve

I wouldn’t mind a Luigi hat in club Nintendo… I wanna see how folks in my university react to seeing a guy with a Luigi hat, lol

          • dylanbob121

            yeah…

          • Silent

That would totally destroy your reputation.

          • Steve

… When did it be about fitting in with everyone else? I like to live my own life and do what I enjoy. I’m not going to change anything just so I can fit it with the “cool” folks who, in reality, are unreasonable, unintelligent, and filled with hot air.

During my high school years, I was considered a nerd and not cool because I was a computer genius. I knew how to make websites, write apps and so much more… All self study. I had few friends, but they were al close and real. Now, those “cool kids” who once picked on me are hating their lives and complete failures. I on the other hand am very knowledgable and am making my own money through app development.

Being different is nothing to laugh at. I like Mario, okey. I wear a Luigi hat… So what? It’s not like I was wearing an Elmo costume or anything like that.

My moto is “One is never happy until he can freely speak his mind.” I’d rather be someone who is able to say what I really think, and have few friends, tan be someone who complies with the status quo so he can fit in with the crowd.

          • http://www.facebook.com/chrisskates Kwis Wose

So, you don’t care what anyone thinks, but you also want to get a reaction by wearing a luigi hat to university. Which one is it? That’s not walking your own path, that’s being immature.

Interesting how you think that just because people thought you were annoying in highschool that they are all now “hating their lives and complete failures” while you ” (are) very knowledgable and am making my own money through app development.” Visions of grandeur don’t make you a hero.

So it’s alright for you to wear a luigi hat, but you draw the line at Elmo costumes?….. ok, you seem “very knowledgeable”.

          • Steve

That’s not my point, and I never said anyone found me annoying. My point was that in high school, you were either cool bu unintelligent or smart and nerdy. In short, if you were lazy smart you were automatically judged as a nerd, if you were good at sports, the world revolved around you… That’s just total close mindedness

And I was never annoying, I was even voted as being one of the most kind hearted folks in my school… But of course, someone’s gonna try to make you look bad. This someone is what I say is “cool” now, but a total failure at the end. Why? Lets see, folks like him are disrespectful, lazy, ignorant, and always tries to make others look bad (even if it means lying) to make himself look better in comparison….

And that statement I made about me making my own money was meant only to prove that “make fun of me as much as you please, but I get the last laugh”.

          • Zorlac79

Getting a reaction from people while wearing a hat has nothing to do with a desire for popularity. I don’t think he wanted to wear a Luigi hat to school and expected to get hoisted up on everyone shoulders with a “3 cheers for steve”! No one has ever worn a hat and made friends over it or had women fall over themselves to get the chance to be with the guy with the Luigi hat!
In my professional filled days, I love to add some immaturity to it as it lets out a pleasant mood. Everyone has “the kid in them” but some are too uptight to let it out now and then, the theory is “there is a time and a place for it”.
I don’t see where he claimed to be a hero, just happy with his life. Unless you are there or know him, I don’t know where you could claim them as visions of grandeur. Did he describe you in one of his examples? Seems like he struck a nerve.

          • Zorlac79

I have to agree there. No one really has friends in high school, that all stops after grammar school. All those who oppose that are fooling themselves. High school is only a competition to be the coolest in which we all look back on later and laugh at how we thought we were cool. I laugh at how the jocks thought they were the coolest and they tend to go no where later in life and earn their out of shape physique due to excess beer intake. Not always, but quite generally. The cheerleaders feel like idiots for letting the jocks take total advantage of them and all end up fat! Fat is one thing, but when someone who’s shallow life and popularity depended on their looks gets fat, it is great! Bitter irony I say! I don’t speak out of spite, just looking back at my 10 year reunion. Looking forward to the 20 year soon….ugh, gett’n old sucks!

          • Steve

            I totally agree.

          • SilverDrake20

Zorlac, your generalizations are very poor. Just because in your experience jocks don’t go anywhere due to beer intake and cheerleaders become fat doesn’t mean that that is the general trend of all jocks and cheerleaders. In fact, I’d argue with you that many of them probably go on to college and lead very normal lives that everyone else does. But I suppose since you’re between 10-20 years removed from High School you’ve held these generalizations for awhile. Oh well, I hope one day you’re actually open-minded and can understand that putting labels on people isn’t the right thing to do.

          • Zorlac79

Yes, they most of the time do go to college, which is party time for them. They drink and smoke the whole time, flunk out or get pushed through luckily. It is not every case that it turns out this way, but in my experiences, quite often. Maybe just in the regions that I grew up, but I grew up a military brat, going to several different high schools in different states. The trend was pretty repetitive. I don’t put labels on people, people do that for themselves. It is not that I have held onto these generalizations for a while either. I work in and am going back to college and see the same thing over and over and over again. I see people eventually grow up a lot too. I always hear “I wish I would have done this a long time ago”. It is a trend of human nature, not a specific character. But generalizations are usually fairly consistent.

          • sithWiiU

That sounds like a stupid idea. Who would do that? How is looking like amoron being you? Unless you are a moron, in which case, cheers to you.

          • Steve

Dude, its a green hat with an L on it. How is that stupid? I don’t know about you, but I just like plain and simple designs. And a plain old green hat with an L on it is moronic… How?

I’m starting to wonder why folks find wearing such things embarrassing but its okey when a guy walks in with his butt crack showing, lol. I think we need to re-evaluate some things.

But if I did do it, it would be just around folks I know.

          • Zorlac79

In this younger society these days, it’s Ok to have you butt crack showing because it warms those kind of people up to where they will end up. You see, sagging pants originates from prison. It signifies that someone is “available” for some manly love. The more people are used to wearing their pants that way now, they will adapt well when they arrive to their long term residence behind concrete walls.

          • Zorlac79

You seem to do it well everyday as it shows by the demeanor of your post. I’m sure running around acting out your star wars fantasies is so much less moronic, like naming yourself after the sith. So cool!

          • sithWiiU

They’ll laugh and think that you’re lucky to have gotten into your university.

          • Steve

            Lol

        • Daniel Farrelly

          …and australia?

        • angel

          do u have a 3ds?

          • dylanbob121

            yes

        • Ibi Salmon

          They’re not important enough…

        • RicardJulianti

Didn’t you hear? America is getting a Pikachu themed XL!

          *sigh*

    • Madmagican

Yeah, it could have something like luigi’s emblem on it like the golden DS for Zelda with a triforce

    • NkoSekirei

lets hope we get luigis mansion game for the wii u too maybe a this time daisy been put into a picture frame instead of mario so king boo can get his revenge on luigi

    • [CMD] DEATH

I have the Green DSi, hope they make a Green 3DS.

    • WiiLuigi

I would buy one. It is the year of Luigi so we might get one after all.

    • RicardJulianti

I would buy a 3DS immediately if it was black on the outside, with a deep green inside to coincide with Dark Moon. That would be the hotness.

  • Fred

I wonder how much New Super Luigi U will cost. Any guesses? I’m hoping $15, but I’d probably be willing to pay $30

    • dylanbob121

      about 20-30$.

      • Tigueron

It is a DLC I would imagine no more than $15

        • dylanbob121

yeah, but iwata did say it was very close to a full game

          • Madmagican

…So? just because it’s close to a full game doesn’t mean it’s gonna get a high DLC price

          • dylanbob121

Dude, its like a real game you would find in a store, just on the e’shop.20-30$

  • dylanbob121

Not exited for the DLC BUT I am exited for the new luigis mansion

  • dylanbob121

    and your point is????

    • Ibi Salmon

His point is that Nintendo isn’t releasing their console specs like they used to.

      • dylanbob121

Then whats the point of argueing about it?The specs dont matter at all.just the core games.

        • Ibi Salmon

True, but it does make you wonder. Why release the console specs for previous systems but not their current systems?

          • dylanbob121

Kinda does…but then why does nintendo do so good?

          • Ibi Salmon

            You’re changing the subject.

          • dylanbob121

Aren’t games supposed to be FUN???If saw it the way I see it,this all wouldn’t matter.Look at the wii compared to xbox and ps3.It was a JOKE.But that didn’t stop it from being the best system on the market.

          • Ibi Salmon

True. The Wii did end up being the 5th best selling system of all time and it did have some of the best games this console generation has to offer.

But that’s besides the point. Nintendo doesn’t seem to be revealing the specs of their new system. While I agree that fun games matters in the end, this decision does strike me as odd.

This isn’t about graphical capabilities. This is about Nintendo’s faith in their new system. If Nintendo is convinced that the Wii U will do well, then why not just tell us what the darn thing is capable of in terms of graphics? It would have saved people the trouble of opening up the system and trying to figure it out themselves.

That seems to be Knowledgeiswhatsup’s point. While I don’t agree about the lying part, I do agree that Nintendo is making a big mistake in not releasing the console specs. They should just come right out and tell us. It’s not like it would stop anyone from buying the system.

It should be made clear that I currently don’t own a Wii U, but I am currently interested in getting one at some point despite the controversy.

  • Kyle Berger

    ok.

Considering that those of us who weren’t in the conversation have no idea what you are talking about, forcing a reply on another irrelevant thread just makes you look like a stubborn jerk.
I’d recommend you don’t do it again.

    • sithWiiU

He could do whatever he wants. I recommend you be quiet.

  • Srpg2ishere

You wasted SO much time looking up all that information.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

That’s because to some specs only matter and while they are nice and all it all comes down to the games. There is no doubt that the PS4 will be graphically stunning and same with the NextBox but the Wii U is too. Some games have already begun to push the console graphically and as it matures the graphics will get better as it has been with other consoles. People focused only on specs and call every game that does not have an M rating “kiddie games” are hiding behind their own insecurities because to them they think it’s cool to be a “hard-core” gamer that only plays Mature games. The truth of the matter is most of them are 12 year olds with bad parents that let them play those games or just douchebags that never grew up and have to lie, throw insults, and cause arguments to try and make themselves feel better.

Funny because the N64 is the only true 64 bit console. No other console went above a 64-bit processer. The ps4 will be the second true 64 bit console (provided Sony doesn’t change up the specs)

    • Fred

Wait, I thought the PS4 is a 32 bit system. Am I wrong?

      • sdmac200600

It’s using an x86 AMD Jaguar processor which is 64 bit

  • Eli Valentin Villanueva

And how this information is related with Luigi?

    • NkoSekirei

i agree on ur comment that fking troll doesnt know wen to quit been a douche

  • bizzy gie

Nintendo pushes gameplay over specs pretty hard. They’re not focused on specs because they shouldn’t matter. If we’re getting the the games and they look as well as play great, knowing the internal specifications won’t matter. Knowing them won’t change them.

Most people don’t know how to modify a console and Nintendo fans are above petty power arguments (the only reason the Wii U’s power is argued is because it still gets mistaken for the Wii). The only people who should be concerned with that many specs are developers.

It’s ALL irrelevant. GPU and CPU give us regular people a general idea how or if games will run on a console and how they will look. That’s all that should matter on the consumer end. But I’m POSITIVE you’re going to try and say somehow knowing all that sh*t you listed is important and how Nintendo is too “scared” (wtf) to release USELESS information to the general public who doesn’t understand half that crap.

But hey, you are top commenter on a site that’s dedicated to something you hate. You gotta get to a thousand somehow and stupid replies and comments got you this far. So let’s see what laughable argument you return to me.

  • NkoSekirei

  • X3Charlie

I’m always deisappointed when Mario games have no story. I mean I’m not looking something big and complex, just something like what was present in the original Super Mario Galaxy.

    • dylanbob121

Whats wrong with the second one?

  • Jimmy D. Fugate

I know this is extremely random, but I’ve been having this notion lately that Nintendo should publish and develop a new survival horror IP (as I can’t get enough of ZombiU and am very excited for RE Revelations). Kind of like Eternal Darkness, but a new series. It could be a Mature IP and kind of stop the claims that Nintendo’s a “kid company”. Any thoughts on this concept?

    • dylanbob121

I would love to see somthing like ghostly figures.that hasn’t been a concept in a while.

      • Jimmy D. Fugate

I’m guessing Donaald or Knowledgeiswhatsup, down voted my comment?

I find that he does if you do not reply to him. He will make a childish non factual comment but I just mark it down and move on. Constructive criticism and polite opinion making is always welcome but immaturity and trollish actions should not be tolerated or warranted with a reply or mention of their name.

      • Eli Valentin Villanueva

Simple, just vote down and flag as inapropiatte and dont send him a reply, because look at this, he stills not talk about luigi. Instead, he talks about specs of nintendo previous consoles. So just flag him and maybe one day he will be banned :)

  • dgallo911

All i wanna know is when is poor Luigi gonna get to “tap” Princess Peach?? That bastard has been putting his life on the line for yrs and all he gets after saving her is a “date” with his hand lol

    Evoluigion

  • sdmac200600

Lol dude those GameCube specs are not accurate. Can you send me to link to where you found the specs of the processor? The N64 is the only 64 bit console in existence and is the last time bits doubled dude. PS2 was 32-bit, Dreamcast was 32-bit Xbox was 32-bit, Xbox 360 is 32-bit, PS3 is 32-bit, Wii is 32-bit, and Wii U is 32-bit. the PS4 will be the second 64-bit console dude and most likely the 720 will be 32-bit unless they copy Sony.

  • Barzh

The PS2 had dual 64-bit processors (ergo 128-bit).

  • bizzy gie

My point being is that with Nintendo pushing game play over specs, wouldn’t it be hypocritical if Nintendo released specs when they want everyone to know it’s not their primary focus?

  • D.M.T

    Paid and full of shit

  • bizzy gie

Oh so we’re talking about the Wii now? That’s a cheap shot.

The Wii U has great specs so I see no shame in releasing them to the general public. However, it’s not their focus as I stated previously. Everyone knows the specs anyway so releasing them would be pointless. And exactly when would Nintendo have the time to do this? In an interview? In a Conference? Nintendo Direct? At E3? No. It would waste time and no one would care. You haven’t proven anything (except how stupid you are).

  • sdmac200600

PS2 CPU: 64-bit “Emotion Engine” clocked at 294.912 GHz
Dreamcast CPU: 200 MHz Hitachi SH4 RISC 64-bit
    Gamecube CPU: 64-bit enhanced PowerPC

Now I will admit I was wrong about the 64 being the only system to use a 64-bit processor but I stand by what I said that 64-bit is the highest consoles have been at. I don’t know who made that website of yours but their info wasn’t correct. they was in the same mindset as you when back then the bits doubled on the processors which they haven’t.
