Pokemon Rumble U will interact with Pokémon toys via NFC

It was always the most obvious software application of the Wii U gamepad’s NFC capabilities. Every Nintendo fan has predicted it, and it looks like this year it will become a reality — there will be a physical Pokémon product that interacts with a Pokémon game via NFC.

The latest issue of Japanese magazine CoroCoro has revealed that Pokémon Rumble U — slated for release in Japan this April — will work in tandem with Pokémon figures purchased at retail. The following partial translation is from Serebii.net:

Story wise, the toy Pokémon have been lost from the shop after falling in the river. The task is to get back to the Toy Shop, while facing various bosses such as Chandelure. 6 Standard Figures and 1 Special Figure are to go on sale on April 24th with the Pikachu figure being known. The figures are trainable and you can record your battle information on them.

While the best case scenario would obviously be functionality in a full-fledged Pokémon RPG with NFC chips embedded in something super-collectible like packs of Pokémon cards, the prospect of these collectible figures is still worth taking notice of.

The notion that the figures will be trainable is particularly interesting in that, as in Skylanders, the toys could become like cute little memory cards you take with you to a friend’s house or a games night. The figures unfortunately seem to use the same super-deformed Mii-like art style as the original Pokémon Rumble, but I guess some people are into that.

In Japan the figures will cost just 200¥, and considering the game costs 1800¥ that’s pretty inexpensive. Only the Pikachu figure is shown in the article, but it is surrounded by art depicting Snivy, Tepig, Oshawatt and Victini. Could they make up four of the other 6 figures? I personally am holding out hope that the special figurine turns out to be Garbodor.

Neither the game nor the NFC figures have been announced for release outside of Japan. Would you be interested in playing with them if they made it to international markets? Sound off in the comments below.

GOTTA’ BUY EM’ ALL! (NFC) POKEMON!

    • MadCrain

Imagine if they came in PokeBalls! *°*

      • Nathaniel Lopez

I guess they could do that for the packaging. It’d be a lot cooler; I know you said imagine, but it’ll up the price, so I find it doubtful.

        • MadCrain

          Yeah…I guess :(

          • Nathaniel Lopez

Sorry to burst your “possible” bubble.

          • MadCrain

We all have to grow up some day.

          • Nathaniel Lopez

Well they could make deluxe NFC versions, which come with the pokeballs. I was just assuming that it they wanted to keep the cost low, they would have to let go of the pokeball concept, if it was ever planned.

          • MadCrain

I think they said 2 dollars each Pokemon, it’ll probably just be the toy, which is fine IMO, still, the PokeBall would be a godsend, I’ve always wanted a PokeBall replica.

          • Nathaniel Lopez

You could look up Burger King Pokemon Promotion on ebay or something if you wanted a replica.

          • MadCrain

Nooo, not like that, Like a full fledged replica, with the button opening up, metallic :3, and what else comes with a PokeBall lol. It has always been a fantasy of mine, even when I was a wee lad, but, dreams will be dreams.

          • Brian Poole

I just went through my parent’s attic a few months ago. I found a Pokeball with a Gold Plated Charizard card in it that I bought from BK when Pokemon the movie came out. (I think it was like $10 or something)

The Pokeball is shiny, not actual metal, but the button opens the ball to reveal the card.

I also found some OoT collectibles, stretch armstrongs, and 1st edition Pokemon cards. I never realized how much I collected as a kid.

          • MadCrain

            Can I have ‘em?

          • Nathaniel Lopez

The Burger King Pokemon Promotion had the pokeball that opened up and held a gold plated pokemon character collectable thing just like Brian had mentioned.

          • MadCrain

Really? I actually had one, but it never came with a PokeBall.

          • Nathaniel Lopez

If I remember correctly, you had to pay extra for this particular promotion.

          • Nathaniel Lopez

Yeah, that’s the one I was talking about.

Nintendo will be showering in $$$

    • Sonic

A former Sony employee sued them..and won.. But i don’t think nintendo is going to be in trouble.

      • Nathaniel Lopez

I agree, Nintendo losing it’s pocket change isn’t something to stress about.

        • dylanbob121

well,i hope they can recover from 2008

  • Bravyoura

Who cares! I’ve been waiting for months for news of new titles this is just a e shop titles to cash in on the skylanders crowd, total BS.

    • Nathaniel Lopez

Well, the E-Shop is there for a reason…

  • Sneferie

I kind of hate this whole “Skylanders format” BS… but at the same time, I kinda wanted to start collecting Pokemon mini-figurines anyway. So, not sure if want… also, not sure if I should get this or hold out for them to do it in a “full-fledged” Pokemon RPG.

    • AAAkabob

I feel the same way about this format. However, this is an ensured way to collect high quality figurines. I want SSB figurines but can’t find anybody who sells them all…

    • RoadyMike

      I just hope I don’t lose these.They’re a lot smaller than I expected..
But the Pokemon fanboy in me is already throwing my money at the screen.I might not even get the game(not very fond of Pokemon Rumble)BUT I WANT THOSE MINI FIGURINES!

      • RonaldRayguns

Yeah me too, the games gonna suck but those figurines are gonna be sick.

  • Squid

Yesyesyesyes. This will be a buy from me. I hated the first skylanders because of the over priced dolls. 2 dollars is a great price.

    • Sonic

      I agree.

      • Cubester_64

        me three

  • Ricardo Sampaio

Even if im 28years old, il stil get most of the toys, but at this age im prety sure il hack my Google Nexus NFC to copy and emulate other charaters XD

  • dylanbob121

Thats new…I’m getting this.It looks like skylanders, but with my second favorite rbg of all time.its a must buy.

  • mchelski

really don’t like this idea, I feel like megaman X hunting for my parts to complete the game, but with expenses =(

  • Cadrion

Always cracks me up to see how much the Japanese game boxes have on them…seems like they cram as much in there as they can!

  • Adrian

Parents will hate this. Most teenagers will think this is stupid. Many kids will love it (related to parents hating it). Adult players will see it as a money making scheme and will only buy into it if they are collectors (in other words a very very small adults demographic).

    • Nathaniel Lopez

I’m pretty sure the “suits” over at Game Freak/Nintendo are more worried about whether it will be popular with the younger audience anyways and hope that teenagers and adults will love it as well.

      • Purple3DSXL

Well, I think they got me. Plus, all these comments are making me really want this game! I only played a demo of the last one, and I still don’t know how that ended up on my Wii Channel because I don’t remember downloading it xD…

    • CyanideInsanity

It depends. If they keep their $2 value over here, and aren’t completely required, it might not be that bad. Unlike skylanders at $15 per, excluding value packs and whatnot, you can get a few a week and not be that drained money-wise.

IAnd if they follow the trend of gen 5 by using mainly gen 5 pokemon with a few older ones, it might not be too bad.

  • Cesar Barroso

So Iwata was not kidding about profiting $200 million next fiscal year. I bet they are delaying the games on purpose to reach that amount. Meaning, after march 31, things will start to change.

    OH
    MY
    GOD

  • GermGerm

Can we just go back to the original 150 pokemon and make a 3D version of pokemon red…and blue for wii U? That would be really great.

    • RonaldRayguns

      Yes, please.

    • Adrian

I would freakin love that. I’ve played through red, yellow and blue probably a total of 20 times.

    • Silent

Can we just move on and leave the old games alone. Seriously, why do people want so many remakes.

      • Nathaniel Lopez

I agree, I would be the first to say the old games didn’t age that well but the remake on the GBA was good enough for me. They updated the issues of the older games. Like speed and the MissingNo. glitch.

      • GermGerm

Because it has been a long long time since I played them and I would LOVE to see an HD 3D Pokemon world with the 150 Pokemon that I grew up with. It was just an idea don’t get your panties in a bunch. It’s okay for me to want different things than you. It really is.

        • Ben Kapferer

That doesn’t mean people have to agree with you, either.

      • Metal_Man_v2

Pokemon remakes have a niche in the video game market because the games themselves are about collecting to “Catch em’ all”.

The first two generations of pokemon were remade because they were completely incompatible with newer generations. But even with games that are compatible, it would be a big hassle to transfer pokemon from the 3rd gen to say, the upcoming 6th gen.

And surprisingly, main series pokemon games, even remakes, sell better than spinoffs. It’s what people want.

    • Ben Kapferer

It’s 151 original Pokémon! Doesn’t anybody ever remember Mew?

  • Eli Valentin Villanueva

And still…better $$$$$ than EA and it´s microtransactions!!!! Gotta buy them all!

    • dylanbob121

      shhhhh…dont give them any ideas…

  • majora :D

Dude, I found somebody who likes Garbodors! That’s harder to find than a shiny Mew!

    • RonaldRayguns

      hahaha!!

    • http://weeklyrift.com/ Tim Biggs

When I’m a full-fledged trainer it’s just going to be me, my Garbodor and my Raichu named Lord Raichu roaming the countryside.

  • Kirbyomega

I probably wouldn’t buy it. I mean, I like Pokémon, but I have other games I would rather buy.

  • Justin Gray

Will the game be online? That is the question.

  • Sdudyoy

While I was going to get this game.

  • http://painitegames.com/ Hybrilynx

reminds me why i dont get why nintendo decided not to give the 3ds a rumble feature. it also reminds me how much it scared me everytime i got hit on metroid prime hunters. when then reminds me i dont remember where i put metroid prime pinball at.

  • MadCrain

    gamefreak, where are you? D:

  • Bravyoura

    The Cash cow goes moo:^)

  • ByteManNeo

    IT PRINTS MONEY!!!

…seriously, between this and the other 1st- party titles, I think the company’s in solid shape. A parents’ bank account, however…
