Report: Lego City: Undercover pre-orders experiencing shortages

lego-city-undercover-1

Last week we told you guys that some retailers like GameStop and Best Buy were listing the release date of Lego City: Undercover as March 21st instead of March 18th. This seems to be confirmed as numerous people are reporting to us and other sites that they’re having trouble finding copies of the game available to purchase. One person even emailed us to let us know that GameStop informed him his pre-order of the game wouldn’t be ready until the 21st. Are you experiencing any problems finding the game?

Last night I ventured to the local Walmart and saw the game available on shelves there, so if you’re having trouble at specialty game shops like GameStop, consider heading to Walmart or Target to see if you can find it there.

Game shortages are the last thing the Wii U needs right now, especially with a high profile release like Lego City: Undercover. While our own review is still withstanding, other outlets like IGN and Polygon have rated the game very highly. Let us know what your experience has been with the game in the comments below.

Yeah, I having problems finding this game:
First Reason: I LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN IN HAWAII!!!!!!

Second Reason: It’s just taking too darn long.
I really want this game NOW!!!!!

    • NkoSekirei

u might have to swim all the way to california to get one lol

      • scarlet

        Yeah, probably. :(

    • brian murphy

      ebay or eShop lol

  • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

    Thank goodness for the eShop!

    • Tmaster

Only if you have the deluxe, otherwise you better have 19 extra gigs standing by waiting for a 24 hr download (by the way i have good internet) cause this is what happened to me.

      • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

Took me 19 hours myself. Honestly I had no plans on picking up this game, but with the delays and it being available on eShop, I decided to buy it. Thankful I did, as the game is surprisingly entertaining. Not to mention that the long load times (which bothered me initially, not so much anymore) are more bearable going digital compared to the retail version.

      • Fred

2TB hard drive eternally fixed that problem for me. The hard drive sits behind my tv and I’ve purchased every game on the eShop since then.

        • Zelly Jeffers

Really wish they’d release Mass Effect 3 and Black Ops II on the eShop!

      • Elem187

I think everyone who bought the standard model knew they already have external storage ready.
Why do people assume people who bought the white model didn’t know they needed their own external storage?? its the biggest reason why I went with it because I have so many external HD’s sitting around that the internal 8gb SSD was no big deal.

      • http://twitter.com/Crabman520 TurboFish

I have the basic plugged in a $10 32GB USB stick 4 hours later I’m playing not a big deal

  • Calvin Bowens

I called my Best Buy on Monday (3/18) and they said it would be released today (3/20). I’ll go by there later to get my copy (I pre-ordered locally).

  • David

Nintendo released this game on the 18th, it is now the 20th. I visited my local Gamestop thinking they would have my pre-order by now, but no, they said they will call me once Nintendo gets their fucking act together.

    • RyuNoHadouken

same thing happened to me this morning

    • Russel Bowersox

I really don’t think it’s Nintendo’s job to makes sure EVERY Wii U game hits the shelves JUST on time….

But I agree that is kinda ridiculous. Still though… It’s just a download away.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Is Lego City Undercover a Nintendo Developed/Published Game? I know it is an exclusive but thought it was still 3rd party?

      • AAAkabob

2nd party, they published but did not develop

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Thanks, I wasn’t sure as there are Lego Games cross platform. Now are the shortages because of demand or due to some supply chain issue.

  • Fred

Who needs Gamestop or Best Buy. All you had to do is hit download on the 17th right before you go do bed (assuming you don’t go to bed before midnight). Then on the 18th you get up and go to work and come home and play your new game without having to worry about stopping at the store.

    • Zelly Jeffers

A lot of people are still very attached to purchasing discs. Personally, I love downloads. Took me 4 hours to snag this from the eShop. It was ready right after I’d finished doing some work. It’s so convenient. You don’t have to track it down in stores that may or may not have it in stock, and you never have to swap discs.

      • Elem187

I would go all digital if the eshop was run more like steam with sales going up every other day…. but paying full price for a digital copy rubs me the wrong way… with purchasing a physical disc I can still recoup 10-20$ of the money I spent back.. You can’t do that on the eshop…. if the eshop sold games a little bit cheaper (10-15$) than physical retailers, I would buy it digitally (no, it doesn’t hurt competition if Nintendo sold download codes for the same price as eshop at retailers)

    • D.M.T

I love discs dude. I’m not a fan of downloads I don’t know why.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000272614291 Axel Lenz

I like the security in knowing that I own something physical, and I LOVE watching my collection steadily grow. Having a wall full of games just makes you feel good. Looking at a library on steam just feels… meh. Console games I’ll always go for the physical copy over the digital one when I have the choice.

        • Fred

I guess I’m the opposite I like the security of knowing that if my kids get into stuff they can’t fully break or lose my downloaded games cause I can always re-download them for free, but I’ve had physical games lost/broken too many times.

      • brian murphy

thing about downloads is when a few years pass by and the wii u is gone from the net and you have hard drive problems all your wii u games are gone

    • Linskarmo

I do, as my internet sucks (compared to most people’s.) Maybe not many people have that problem, but 19 gigs is absolutely huge from the perspective of my internet. I do find it very convenient to download smaller games, though.

      • Fred

Just hit download and then hit “power off when finished downloading” right before you go to bed. Even if it doesn’t finish while you sleep you’ll still have 8-10 hours the next day while you’re at work

  • Zelly Jeffers

This is a real shame because this game is brilliant.

Really glad I got it from the eShop.

    • http://twitter.com/Crabman520 TurboFish

how long did it take you to download it ?

      • Zelly Jeffers

        Took four hours.

    • Orange Lada

I read criticism of the load times. Wondered how load times are on the eshop version, and if it speeded up much vs. disk?

      • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

Digital is faster than disk, and in some cases a few seconds faster than an external HD (depends on model). To test this, I used a stopwatch to track time, conducting 3-4 trials on the specific areas mentioned below. To give you an idea of some of the load times I got and compared with others:

Me (digital, Wii U Deluxe model)
~1:10 to load from the dashboard
        ~1:07 to the first cutscene

        Transition Times
        City to Station: ~0:35
        Station to Ctiy: ~1:05

External HD (Drive: Western Digital Passport 3.0 500GB)
~1:12 to load from the dashboard
        ~1:08 to the first cutscene

        Transition Times
        City to Station: ~0:40
        Station to Ctiy: ~1:13

        Disk (Retail)
~1:20 to load from the dashboard
        ~1:08 to the first cutscene

        Transition Times
        City to Station: ~0:43
        Station to Ctiy: ~1:12

Load times are still lengthy, although they are much more bearable on the digital version (at least when it comes from moving from the city to the police station and vice-versa). These only seem to be an annoyance if you move from the two areas above constantly. If not, they aren’t that bad, as the game loads an entire area at once. The only loading times I have encountered within the city itself is when I took a train or ferry to a new section of LEGO City (which were about 3-5 seconds).

        • Elem187

Makes sense going from the big city to police station will be exponentially shorter than going from police station to city.
Sounds like they are loading the entire city into memory.

      • Godinjp

very long load times but the game’s worth it anyways.Doesn’t load often

    • Linskarmo

I was thinking about downloading it, but 19 Gigs is way more than my internet can handle. I love all of it so far, sans the loading sessions.

  • Colin Tosh

So what were NeoGAF and GameFAQS posters saying about this not selling systems?

My guess is demand was underestimated.

    • sithWiiU

Hope. Nintendo messed up on stock. Even people with pre orders are having issues. this isn’t a case of demand.

      • NkoSekirei

not nintendo its someone in the delivery department thats screwing the release date up

  • Johny

well its a good sign :D the game is selling ! … also the game has been on the top overal preorders on the huge online retailer where i buy games : shopto

    • Elem187

yeah. I’m interested in seeing its NPD numbers next week.

  • Evan

I bought mine today at Target. They only had a few left. When I call GameStop they tell me April 21st? But Im hoping she meant March. But no matter. I’ll be playing tonight.

  • Mr. Nidoking

This whole thing has been weird. First Best Buy changed the release to the 20th, then I get an email on the 19th saying the release has changed back to the 18th so I thought I would be getting it sooner. Then I get an email saying my order was back ordered and that they weren’t expecting to get my copy until at least the 29th. Then I get an email today saying that my copy has shipped and should be expecting it in the next couple of days. I’m happy I’m getting it but what a strange chain that was.

  • Link Slayer

I picked this game up at Walmart my Walmart had it the 18th. I really didn’t want this game then I was like what the heck. Man am I glad i got this game its uber good. Its the 2nd best Wii U game next to NSMBU. I cant eait for deus ex or howerver u say that. I always wanted that game!

  • Zuxs13

Is this a lack of available stock? or is it because the demand is so high? Sounds like even some of the larger retailers are out of stock on the shelves so maybe people are buying it up (let’s hope so).

    • sithWiiU

Lack of stock. Same thing happened with FE:A. Even people with pre orders could not get a copy. Nintendo just screwed up on the stock, simple as that.

      • Elem187

I don’t know, I would imagine Nintendo knew Lego City would sell quite a bit considering how big the drought was…. But fire emblem, they couldn’t have seen that coming because previous versions sold really bad.

BTW Fire Emblem Awakening is my GOTY. Simply amazing. Also my first FE game, it has me pumped for the Wii U version.

  • http://twitter.com/DJDALLYDEE Dallas Scott Cooper

Wii U Daily, don’t trust IGN’s opinion. They are dumb.

    • AAAkabob

Meh I have yet to disagree w/ their scores. I didn’t like ZombiU and agree w/ that score. Then again it isn’t my kind of game, however I had so many gripes that even if it was my kinda game I wouldn’t give it above a 7.5

  • Perkoff

Just got it from Best Buy, I pre ordered it months ago they had no copies for sale with all the other Wii U games. I had to go up to customer service and get it there. So it seems like my Best Buy store only had enough for the people who pre ordered.

  • megamanultra

My pre order was back stocked to as far as April 11th. called and got the Best Buy order changed to an in store pickup, but they only had 5 copies in the store I picked. got mine, but others may suffer.

  • BuckStud

I picked the game up at our local Meijer on the 18th….It’s a great game.

  • Kyle Berger

the only thing stopping me from buying this game is lack of multiplayer. I want to be able to play with my brother. please don’t tell me to share because we all know that never works out. otherwise, I would really like to get this game.

  • audi lover

Why are people buying from gamestop from what I hear there shit at delivering on time and I live in uk, better of with walmart surely? Our equivalent is tesco and they have releases on shelves by 6 in morning and at better prices, cant beat it

    • jay

they are shit. They still haven’t delivered the exclusive Pokemon promised a few weeks back :(

  • NkoSekirei

i picked up monster hunter today and gamestop told me lego city was delayed till tomorrow or friday and they did say they will call me wen they have it in store got i hate the release date issue.

  • Sean

We pre-ordered this through GameStop to no avail. GameStop originally told us they were going to have a midnight release @ 12:01AM Monday (3/18). We waited and went to the store after school around 5:00PM only to be told they didn’t have it. GameStop told us we had the release date wrong, and that it was to be released 3/19. This was the same guy that we pre-ordered with the week before who told us they had the product on hand, but couldn’t sell it until its “…street date” of 3/18, and that they were going to open at midnight for pre-orderers like us. I’m certainly glad we didn’t go down there Sunday night, or I would have been pretty upset! So we called the store yesterday, Tuesday, 3/19, and were again told that they have yet to receive any product. Called again today, Wednesday, 3/20, and got the same story. We called Nintendo USA and they acted completely ignorant to all of this product shortage. They encouraged us to download the game, as others have mentioned here. Why shouldn’t they? It costs them much less, and they make much more! No physical product, no packaging, no logistics, no inventory, same price, no middleman, keep the extra $ for themselves (the $ that the retailer would have made). What a racket! The release date was set long ago. Why couldn’t they get their product delivered on time? We asked Nintendo if we were going to suffer the same fate with Luigi’s Mansion 2: Dark Moon, and were told that it had “…an estimated release date of 3/24″. That’s 4 days from now! Estimated? That product should be in stores by now! When are they going to nail down the release date? After it’s released? This is after YEARS of waiting! Unbelievable! Nintendo is quite obviously taking advantage of their consumer base, by producing product whenever, and however they feel like it! Further, they are taking advantage of retailers like GameStop to advertise and market their proprietary games, and then cutting them out by encouraging gamers to download instead. And from the sound of it, they can’t even keep up with the download demand! TOTALLY BOGUS BUSINESS PRACTICES!

    • Joey Perez

      waaaaaaaa….
what do you want nintendo to do about gamestops mess up.. and any system has download problems first day out i tried getting gears and it took forever the other day.. walk ur ass to wal mart or down load it.. if you dont want nintendo products dont play them.. nintendo owes nothing to gamestop … remember gamestop doesnt create or make games they just retail them and there are plenty of video game stores in the world.. tell gamestop to stop taking advantage of gamers by giving them pennies for trade in values..

      • sithWiiU

You’re a blind fanboy. In the past 4 years, I do not remember once when a major game release was delayed besides Fire Emblem & now this. It was NOT Gamestops fault or Amazons. This was all on Nintendo. Stop being a Nintendrone & open your eyes.

        • Joey Perez

and let me ask you this how old are you? and if im a fan boy … its only because I have been playing games since the first NES and have seen what the company can do during tough times and fruitful times. my eyes are open … waaaaaaa when someone tells me something i call them names.. <— thats you … maybe your dad should of been more of a man and told you things like being a cry baby snatch that resorts to calling names is cowardly ..
i have every system and i play great games….
if target and wal mart have them on time even my k-mart here… has them in stock on day one it would seem to be an ordering mess up. maybe you should leave your eyes closed and open up your mind … oh and be a man .. then again perhaps you are a female if so all is forgiven as your estrogen probably clouds your judgement at leas part of every month

        • Theiz Zzee

How are you or others going to blame Nintendo for shipping delays? It’s the retailers responsibility to work out any shipping issues. It is a Nintendo exclusive not a Nintendo published game.

  • Joey Perez

this is a blow to nintendo..
this is the last thing nintendo needs
blah blah blah … you could have just said they were available at wal mart or target.. or
e shop… if you want nintendo to fail write for another company

    • AAAkabob

The thing is they realized that we (the readers) react more to articles of them being critical and plain trolling Nintendo, thus giving them more hits and more cash.

This will continue until we start to leave and then this place shall burn to the ground

      • Joey Perez

im sure once the miiverse app and site launch this will burn

        • AAAkabob

Hopefully Miiverse will let us make subtopics about rumors and upcoming games/gadgets

    • Elem187

Wii U Daily has been spreading nothing but doom and gloom, lately.. They know what article titles get hits, and which don’t…
Sounds like there was a late push for preorders as launch day approached, which will catch anyone off guard… When preorders are only happening like 20k or so a week and then pow a week before release date they get 500k or so more preorders, will be enough to get just about any company to scramble to print up more copies quickly.

  • WiiUlover

yes this has happened to me

  • dgallo911

Knowing Nintendo, they have kept half the stock so they can release another bundle lol

  • HotInEER

Gamestop called me today and said mine is in. I will pick it up tomorrow.

  • http://twitter.com/Crabman520 TurboFish

got a call today from gamestop telling me my copy of lego city will be avail to be picked up on 3/21/2103 just got off the phone with my local gamestop and the guy said on his computer it does not show any on the way , better be a special overnight shipment from gamestop or im going to just download it

  • Link Slayer

It could also be delayed because they are working on a patch to speed up loading screens. I already own it and love the game but it has some long loading times. I hope they are working on a patch and put it out soon.

  • Linskarmo

Anyone else preorder this from Amazon? On its website a few reviews say its been delayed a month, but I’m not sure if that’s for all preorders.

  • Leorio

I was told by my gamestop that they wouldn’t have the game until tomorrow(thursday) while their site said the 20th since like sunday.. and today when I called, I was told thursday again.. their site now says the 22nd. lol Nintendo AND Gamestop need to get their crap together BAAAAAAAAAAADLY.

  • Wing Zero

one of the best game I’ve ever played it’s funny I hop they make it into it’s own franchise

  • http://www.facebook.com/attackjacknow Nick Lawless

Still waiting for my pre-order from Gamestop. They said maybe the 21st or 22nd. I don’t blame them for the delay. Even my local Target stores have not recieved it and I live in a major metropolitan area of California. It’s Nintendos fault for late shipment or not ordering enough units. I feel bad for them in a way, I really want the Wii U to succeed. This isn’t the way to make the point that it can handle exclusive titles with ease. ..but we’ll see.

  • disqus_zgn9fkUqpb

i guess LEGO has gone too undercover!

  • Elem187

What it sounds like it is retailers got an unexpected huge push of preorders of the game as it approached launch day and Nintendo had to scramble to print out more copies.

If Nintendo printed enough of what they thought would be enough and then it still not being enough… Something tells me the NPD data for this game next week will be impressive.

  • Justin Jefferson

    LOVE THIS GAME!

  • Linskarmo

I had this preordered from Amazon. They said to expect it sometime in April, so I canceled the order and bought it from GameStop. Its very fun so far, and funny.
