Wii Mini unboxed and compared to Wii U (video)

While the Wii U is taking up all of the spotlight as Nintendo’s new home console, the old Wii is still going strong. It’s still selling well, especially in emerging territories, and recently passed the magic 100 million sales mark.

To broaden the Wii fan base even more (as if it wasn’t the most mainstream home console to begin with), Nintendo released the Wii Mini. Which is a redesigned Wii that’s stripped down to the basics: no online connectivity, no game downloads, no GameCube backwards compatibility etc. The Wii Mini was received with mixed reactions when it launched, but at $99, it’s got great value for the very casual gamer.

We’ve got an unboxing video of the Wii Mini, where its tiny size is compared to the Wii U. While it’s a bit thicker, it’s overall much smaller. It’s also compared to the 3DS XL. Check out the video below:

    Wii mini is pointless imo.

    • dylanbob121

The wii u came out.it sales will suck.(not being a troll)

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Bingham/100000260255063 Chris Bingham

could you try to make sense… because clearly you do sound like a troll

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004766431201 Barney Stinson

He does make sense. With the Wii U out,it’s obvious that the Wii Mini is not going to do good. And judging by your comment,if anyone seems like a troll,it’s you.

    • mikel334u2

Yea, I think so too. For $30 more, you could get internet, wii shop, gamecube compatibility, wii sports, wii sports resort, and an overall better console design.

      • mikel334u2

You could probably even get a used Wii for a lot less.

    • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

Even though the “Wii Family Edition”, the current model, doesn’t have GC compatibility, at least it has internet capabilities. Online gaming is pretty much dead on the Wii anyway, but not being able to access the Virtual Console is a huge negative.

My guess is the Wii Mini is for areas that haven’t had the Wii introduced yet or for “3rd World” countries, so to speak.

    • MujuraNoKamen

I don’t see why they made it either, a redesigned Wii is a bit questionable but why’d they remove GC compatibility and online – same could be said for Wii family edition (although that did have online) there’s no real draw to the console, for a similar price point you could get an older Wii that does everything Wii could ever do.

    • HSN1

It will be good when the Wii will be discontinued and the Wii servers will have to shut down, so that people who want to play it will be able to do it with a very little budget

    • http://twitter.com/Gamesplayswill william maxwell

maybe so but nintendo collectors wouldn’t mind it! =3

    • Teem Four Tress Too

I agree, this was a waste of money for nintendo. What were they thinking?!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004766431201 Barney Stinson

Either get a regular Wii which is extremely cheep now, that allows online and GC play,or get the Wii U. I can’t see Ninty makng much of a Wii Mini, especially since the Wii will be dead soon, with the Wii U out.

    • [CMD] DEATH

Yeah, I would still get a normal Wii again over this, this is for like little kids, simple stuff and no online.

    • dylanbob121

I wouldnt say the wii is dead, just not really used anymore

  • [CMD] DEATH

I like the size and how you put the disc in but I don’t like that is has no internet.

  • Metal_Man_v2

Nintendo is trying to combat retailers selling used Wii consoles by selling a cheaper model to the people that somehow STILL don’t have one. Unfortunately, retailers like gamestop have regular Wii consoles around $75. I think the effort is a little pointless… sorry Nintendo. The Wii was a major success, but you aren’t going to get anymore out of it.

  • Nintedward

    It’s crap.

This guy is just showing off his hardware :) . I have that nice silver XL and the black wiiu too :D

  • tronic307

Nintendo, the Wii has served you well; at least give it a decent burial: The Wii mini is like a Wii-zombie.
No online, no SD card slot, but lack of component video was the final insult. I’d get it maybe for the red controllers, then eBay the rest.
Get a used Wii that can play Gamecube games for cheaper. Unless you happen to be a total noob gamer with a 20 year old TV, this is absolute junk.

    • Nintedward

It doesn’t even support composite or component cables I think . facepalm .

      • prettypinkpanacea

        Ditto.

  • D.M.T

Wii Mini sucks. What’s the point of it Nintendo? It’s not even a good looking console. It looks like crap compared to the original Wii.

    • WiiUltra

I actually like how it looks. Red and black is a nice combonation. I also love how the top opens like the gamecube. But I also agree its completely pointless.

  • Shadriczo

In Other news.. Capcom Says a New Mega Man Game is ‘Being Discussed’

  • Sdudyoy

Although I don’t really care for the Wii mini I have to say that Wii remote should be sold separately I would buy in an instant!

  • Ibi Salmon

Can someone tell me what the point of this thing is? Regular Wiis sell for under $100 and the Wii U has backwards compatibility with Wii games.

Who was this bizarre contraption made for?

    • Cap9

Exactly. To me it seems like a waste of time and investment. They should be putting all the time and investment in the Wii U, not the Wii! Kinda ticks me off. Can’t believe Nintendo makes these dumb decisions. I love the Wii U but man, Nintendo needs to step it up and be smarter.

      • Ibi Salmon

It just boggles my mind that such a thing even exists. It can’t exist for the people that don’t already own a Wii since they can get one for a cheaper price than this and the Wii U eliminates the need for this.

The only people I can see buying this thing are collectors. The kind of people that would pay $1000 for a Wii bundled with The Last Story(Yes, such a thing exists). But those people don’t seem like a popular demographic so again, why does this thing exist?

        • tronic307

It exists as a cheap Wii substitute. Cheap for Nintendo.

          • Ibi Salmon

That makes no sense. It would have been cheaper not to make the thing at all. Jus promote whatever Wii’s you have left and look forward in to the future with the Wii U. There was no need for this thing.

  • Nilton

Maybe for you in USA is useless a Wii mini at this price, but in others countries it shall sell well. Here in Brazil it should be sold at US$ 199,00 (unfortunately for us), but still is cheaper than regular Wii, which is sold at $ 350,00. In comparison with WiiU is even more cheaper, because it is sold at $ 950,00 the basic version.

    • TheUnBiasedGamer

$950?!?! Geez, even after conversions, that’s about the same as 950 USD… You guys must face-palm when you hear us Americans fearing $70 games…

      • Nilton

Actually I meant US$ 950,00. In Brazil you should double to convert to our currency (R$ 1.900,00). And yes, US$ 70,00 a game would be a dream for us.

        • TheUnBiasedGamer

          Sorry ’bout the confusion

  • MetroidZero

Great design! I love to play online, so getting this is pointless, but that design is awesome, I must say!

  • MetroidZero

Wii U gamepad is bigger O_O

  • http://twitter.com/SeroReviews SeroReviews

I don’t think the Wii Mini is pointless. If you think about it, the majority of people that bought the Wii didn’t care about GameCube retrocompatibility (or didn’t even know what GameCube was). A lot of them didn’t care about online multiplayer, and besides that, online multiplayer on Wii wasn’t that good. Almost all Wii consoles sold nowadays are the newer model, that doesn’t have GC compatibility, so this isn’t a big deal. Lots of people just want to have a bit of fun with Wii Sports, or Resort, or some party game. IMO, the greatest flaw on the Wii Mini is the lack of Virtual Console, but again, majority of people didn’t care about that “old games”.

    • Metal_Man_v2

While all of that is true and makes perfect sense, the problem here is that used regular Wii consoles can be bought for even CHEAPER, and include all the features. Why pay more for less? This is just Nintendo’s attempt to try and compete with used console sales and make more money, but it’s kind of pointless.

  • RoadyMike

This has nothing to do with the article but just hear me out guys.I’ll get to the point:

    BUY 3RD PARTY GAMES!

Seriously, buy good 3rd party games. This is a no brainer, but if developers see that their games sell well on the Wii U,other devs will at the very least consider to bring their games to the system
They fear that bringing over their games would be a bad decision. They fear that Nintendo’s games will overshadow theirs. We,as consumers and more specifically Wii U owners, are the only ones who can show them otherwise.Show them that we DO want third party games

By “good 3rd party games” I mean games like NFS, the recently confirmed for Wii U .Deus Ex,and heck, even Rayman Legends,They’re improving those games just for the Wii U;lets not make their efforts go to waste.Rather, let’s keep it that way

I don’t know about you guys, but I for one would love to see big AAA titles come to the Wii U.The system is capable enough, all it needs is a chance

That is all and thanks for your attention

    • thedeciderU

      important point. i agree!

  • InterTreble

Apart from Wii Mini or not, what Nintendo should do, as soon as possible, is to make people aware that Wii U is ANOTHER thing than Wii and Wii Mini. There are still people who think that Wii U games may be played on the Wii… Nintendo must start using strong terms: Wii U is next gen, or things like this. Use the vocabulary of the customers, give them the clear idea that Wii U is the competitor of PS4 and Xbox Durango. It’s really unfare Wii U is so badly supported at now, but it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon, and there’s still time to win also this console war. Again! ;-)

    • Sdudyoy

When it first was announced I was thinking it was just a controller, and when we went to buy it my Mom thought it was just a portable Wii and she asked why do you want another Wii.

      • InterTreble

You’re not alone, buddy… It’s definitely Nintendo’s fault! Hope things may change in the future and above all you’re enjoying your “another Wii”! LOL

        • Sdudyoy

I enjoy it very much, The Gamecube still stands as my favorite game console though, Ahh all the good games.

          • InterTreble

You’re right, man! The most undervalued console ever! ;)

    • Ibi Salmon

Nintendo is doing just that at PAX. Apparently, it’s still not good enough for some people.

      • InterTreble

I do hope, man! Believe me, I’m on your same side if you’re referring to me: I love Nintendo and I’m their first supporter! So, if they’re going to improve the marketing and communication about Wii U, I’m more than happy, since I think it’s the only real issue about the console. A great console, with all the potential to win also this generation, since PS4 and Xbox won’t have the innovations brought by the touchscreen on the controller, in my opinion a possible fail for Sony and MS if well exploited by Nintendo and the SHs for new gameplay solutions and effective games! Even without marketing, I think when the first party IPs are ready, the installation base will be boosted enogh to push SHs to develop more games on Wii U and people more aware of its power. As usual! ;)

        • Ibi Salmon

I think that if the right steps are taken, the Wii U will survive. I wish nothing but the best for the most controversial console in all of gaming.

  • http://twitter.com/RickysRevenge Ricky Guzman

Nintendo is so bad like wtf are you doing? serriously? Cmon. Get it together.

  • http://twitter.com/RickysRevenge Ricky Guzman

This is like when sega licenced Majesco to make the genesis 3 when people were already on the Saturn/PS N64

  • Cap9

Yea it makes no sense to make a wii mini. It’s like competing against your own Wii U. Why put a wii mini on the market when you just came out with a Wii U. The Wii U does wii and next gen…People sometimes get thrown off by the similar names too. Nintendo needs to be wiser. But big props for the Wii U, despite some minor disappointment, it’s a great console that just needs to be advertised well for support.

  • Fred

considering that the Wii comes with Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort and this doesn’t come with any games it’s not really a better deal

  • DemonRoach

Nintendo needs to focus on wii u, not wii remakes that NOBODY wants.

  • zhenyaivan

this is gonna be a must have for video game collectors.

  • http://www.facebook.com/milesp2 Miles Phillips

This really is silly of Nintendo, I mean why release something that could take some of your potential Wii U crowd(or would be Wii U buyers)? They need to put full focus on the Wii U and keep up 3ds support instead of dragging a console past its end. That was the problem Sony had with the continuation of selling Ps2’s, the ps3 had to compete with a much cheaper console that had a much much larger library of great games. Sure it was cool that people could get in to gaming with an inexpensive console , and I think Ps2 was an awesome system but it cost Sony possible Ps3 sales. Though if this means potential continuation of Wii games being sold I will have time to get all the old games I wasn’t able to get without having to order online.

  • Adrian Brown

GB micro, Wii mini… we shoud expect a 3DS tiny someday

  • http://www.facebook.com/KallumSmarties Kallum Nom Nom Smart

I was thinking of replacing my Wii with the Wii mini but to be honest, It has taken nearly all of the best features and since Wii has been out for so long and original is cheap as it is, it ended up being pointless.

  • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.miniri Anthony Miniri

    I shall call him…

    Mini Wii

  • MujuraNoKamen

If I see this advertised by Nintendo but not Wii U I’m going to scream!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=503983848 Chris Wells

a mini or portable gamecube would have been so much coolor

  • Leon Tizzano

If it could play Gamecube games i’d buy one.

  • iPedro1000

This should have been the WiiU. Nintendo missed an opportunity to appeal to the nostalgic gamer, the ones who played NES, the ones that are now grown up and are buying Playstations and XBOX, the very ones Nintendo is trying to recapture this generation.

The Wii mini feels like an old school Nintendo console with its matte texture like the NES and Famicom colours. This would have been an excellent attention grabber and a way to demonstrate that the WiiU is an entirely new console.

Super Nintendo, N64, GameCube all had iconic console designs. Today, the WiiU looks to have had no design thought whatsoever. I find that unfortunate.

I guess it’s possible for Nintendo to do a course correction with the WiiU and release a new version or special edition with a different design. I’m confident that the WiiU will be competitive in the next generation for reasons I’ve outlined in other threads but I would not mind a nostalgic inspired re-design. I’d immediately buy another WiiU and gift or sell my existing one.

  • http://twitter.com/Hi675445 EverythingCool

why would they make this wast of there money people are going to buy the wii u over this or buy an old will console which would have gone down in prize

  • LopsidedPasta

“I can’t wait to get a Wii Mini!”
    -said no one

  • Mickey Mouse

What is the point in comparing the Wii mini to the Wii U, it’s just a dumb thing to do.

  • fireheartis1

I can see the a reason for having the Wii Mini. My kids love playing Wii games on our Wii U, but they always fight over what game they want to play. The Wii Mini would solve that problem because they can have their own little Wii in their bedrooms. If this ever releases in the States then I will be picking one up for my kids for sure. We all love certain Wii game and my kids having their own Wii would only be a good thing. I hope they release this in the states quickly so I don’t have to pay high shipping cost to order it from Canada. It’s a good thing Canada is NSTC just like here in the United States lol.

    • http://www.facebook.com/AJ.Fowl Andrew Chambers

You could get a used Wii for like $80 at Gamestop. Cheaper at other places.

  • fireheartis1

Lol I must proof read my comments man. I’ve have a whole lot of grammar errors in my last one.

  • Ryan House

I was thinking how it looked like the SNES and then the Guy says the same thing after I just Thought it

I am Canadian but I wouldn’t buy one of these. Gamecube Play back was very Important for me.
