Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse could come to Wii U

castle-of-illusion

This year is shaping up to be a great one for retro gamers. Not only is the Virtual Console headed to Wii U this year, but we’re getting great remakes like the new DuckTales Remastered that was announced at PAX East. Now, it appears as if the 1990 classic Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse could be coming to the Wii U as well. The game received classification in Brazil back in January for several systems, including the Wii U, though the production date was set to 1990. That means if anything its a port of the old game, but given that Sega is remaking DuckTales, that’s not out of the realm of possibility either.

There’s no clue if Sega plans on releasing a polished up port or an HD remake, but I’d cautiously keep my eye on this one. The interest in the DuckTales Remastered version could very well lead Sega down the path of full remake if the game sees enough support. What do you think? Did you play the original? Are you excited about playing the game again or for the first time? Let us know in the comments below.

Never played this, but something similar on GBA.

    I’d buy it!

  • mchelski

I had this game for mega drive, I bought it together with shinobi, good old days

  • Sami Rautio

If it’s Similiar to MICKEY MANIA on SNES and Ps1 BEST MICKEY GAME EVER MADE :) check it out on youtube. If MIckey mania would be remade then i would be as happy as when i heard Duck Tales Remastered news :)

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

Hey I agree with you about Mickey Mania. I had it on both SNES and Genesis. Hated the moose levels!

      • bizzy gie

Oh so you do read the comments. Great. Now if you could just BAN DONAALD or Knowledgeiswhatsup. I think I speak for more than myself when I say we want his *ss gone.

  • MichelChartrand

I played this game for many hours at my friends house, back then rentals and sleepovers rocked for gaming.

    Wouldn’t
surprise me if this game was remade and released as a standalone game
rather than a virtual console if they want to capitalize on the small
    resurgence of Mickey in gaming.

  • Teves153

And does this game feature cough cough sora and cough cough keyblades?

    • Jimmy D. Fugate

Not trying to be negative but I’m starting to think Kingdom Hearts III is vaporware. They’ve been releasing so many remakes, prequels, and asides….it kind of raises the question of when they are going to release KH3 or when they will start development. Other than KH1 and KH2, they had Chain of Memories, RE: Chain of Memories, 358/2 Days, Birth By Sleep, Coded, Dream Drop Distance and now 1.5 HD Remix. I just feel they are going to over-saturate their own series.

      • Ace J

they already stated that they will start development on kh3 when they finish final fantasy 13 versus. but that game has been in development for 7 years lol.

  • Eduardo

Castle of Illusion was awesome, and so was World of Illusion with both Mickey and Donald for the Genesis. I hope they end up remastering both of them. Even better would be if they follow Ducktales with Quackshot, another amazing Donald game from the Genesis, one of my favorite games of all time!

  • Nonayo Business

i never played that one (never had a sega) but I’d also love to see The magical Quest staring mickey mouse

  • http://people.ign.com/returnofthetruth2 ReturnoftheTruth2

Nintendo makes a ‘new’ system only to bring old games? They wonder why no one has bought in yet? These old games is what emulators are for!

    • Superstick98

I completely disagree with you. Having old remakes of GOOD games is one of the best things you can do for a new system. Especially since it’ll utilize the Wii U control and even high definition, too. Just like Nintendo’s remaking Wind Waker for Wii U. I don’t care what anyone says. THAT is a huge step in the right direction.

      • http://people.ign.com/returnofthetruth2 ReturnoftheTruth2

That is good for an alternative, but not for your main software, which you have to admit it is their main software right now. I am all for HD updates or remakes, but if you make a new system, don’t flood it with old games. There is not point in having it then.

        • Zorlac79

Oh my, you are right! That is their main software right now is remakes…. Oh wait, there aren’t any yet. But those have been the only new games mentioned though is remakes. We haven’t heard of a new mario, or a new zelda, mario kart, pikmin, lego, resident evil, etc.
          O_o Dude! Grow up!

        • NkoSekirei

dude we got plenty of awsome games coming later this year u just need to chill out and have patience and im enjoying need for speed, monster hunter ultimate and lego city undercover till then

      • MichelChartrand

I agree that having remakes of good games is a good thing, but they should avoid putting too much emphasis on it. When 3DS came out I saw so much being talked up about Zelda: OOT 3d and Starfox 64 and such, it makes people think that’s mostly what they have is re-releases. It’d be like buying a blu-ray player and finding out all that’s available is remastered Star Wars and Tron.

Also when re-releasing or remaking they need to add much more than graphics, otherwise the argument that good gameplay trumps fantastic graphics is lost, otherwise the original graphics should be able to withstand scrutiny on a virtual console release(With proper filters applied of course to prevent all that bad pixellation of old games).

      • greengecko007

Focusing on remakes is one of the worst things you can do for a new console. It severely limits the target audience to A.) Younger players who haven’t played the game or B.) Hardcore fans

Focusing on NEW games is a great way to attract everyone.

        • briwas101

Quit trying to talk sense into nintenboys.
If Nintendo says the grass is blue and the sky is green, then it is.
If nintendo says oxygen is bad for humans, millions of nintenboys stop breathing.
Nintendo has trained these little kids to act like everything nintendo does is good, even when nothing even comes close to anything that Sony or MS do.

          • Sonic the Hedgehog

Nintendo is a game maker… not a freaking government.

      • briwas101

Remakes arent necessarily a bad thing, but now is not the time to focus on remakes.
Windwaker HD? Looks worse than the first PS3 games that came out. You can make Pong in “high def” but it will still just look like pong. The visual style of Windwaker does not lend itself to HD improvement very well.
These remakes might be something to keep you busy for a little bit, but Sony isn’t going to release the ps4 and have us playing nothing but remakes and 3-year old ports for the first 6 months.
Remakes should NEVER be at the forefront, it should be an option on the side for people who are craving a little nostalgia.
Like knowledge said, old games are for emulators, not brand new systems.

        • greengecko007

“The visual style of Windwaker does not lend itself to HD improvement very well.”

Why I won’t be buying into Wind Waker HD. WW is my favorite LoZ game, but the graphics are not being drastically improved with the remake, because WW graphical style has inherently allowed it to age very well. Even if the rumors about the missing dungeons being completed turn out to be true, which is quite possible, I’m not shelling out $60 to play 1-2 more dungeons in a game I already have.

    • AAAkabob

Playing these games on a keyboard is horrible, and third party controllers for computers are generally bad. Emulators are for stealing products that could otherwise benefit publishers & developers.

      • Superstick98

I agree with you. The keyboard is definitely not a good way to experience old games. And If a game is good then I would spend my money to benefit the publishers and developers. Not steal It on an emulator.

        • http://people.ign.com/returnofthetruth2 ReturnoftheTruth2

Now you go against the PC gamer code of putting down keyboards? The publishers already sold what they could of those old games on their initial runs. Emulation is not stealing, but is a technical experiment.

          • Zorlac79

Keyboards; great for typing, suck for gaming!
But I’m a console gamer, so that’s my opinion.
So…. It is OK for the PS3 and Xbox to put out retro games, but when the Wii U does it, it’s “stupid”?
How about the big feature of the PS4 to be streaming PS1, PS2, and PS3 games? But that is ok? So then like you said, No wonder why no one will buy it then…..
These troll postings are becoming less and less thorough. Being fueled by stupidity instead of hate these days. Yawn.

          • http://people.ign.com/returnofthetruth2 ReturnoftheTruth2

Are the other two pushing old games as their main offerings? No. Nintendo has nothing for the Wii U but they push remakes and old games. No good.

          • Sonic the Hedgehog

Mario Kart U, Super Smash Bros, 3D Mario, TLoZ U, are all in development, and more than just these games will be the key selling points of the Wii U, Mario Galaxy 2 blew my mind, and the Gamepad of the Wii U will do nothing but prove Nintendo will forever define gaming for generations.

          • briwas101

            IN DEVELOPMENT.
Do you understand what that means?
It means you arent getting those games for a long time.
It means Nintendo released a system KNOWING that it wont have any games to sell you for a long time, but they wanted your money so they sold you a new system.
The gamepad blows and your insanely gay comment about it makes it sound like you want to gay marry Mario.
Nintendo has cemented its place as a has-been. Nintendo is the system of choice for little kids who still believe in Santa.
Nintendo is for kids who still wet the bed.
Teenagers and adults move on to Sony and MS.
Nintendo stopped being fun in the 90s

          • Sonic the Hedgehog

Quality games require time to develop, unlike copy/pastes such as CoD. The Gamepad, is not as innovative as the Wiimote, but add them together, they make a great team. And why would it matter if I wanted to gay marriage Mario or not? Nintendo is too much for you, because the children who wet there beds have more integrity than spoilt bastards like you. And Nintendo games are not fun? You clearly do not have any skills in true core games.

          • Zorlac79

Yep, nothing. And their main offerings? lol. Just keep thinking your right. It’s ok.

          • briwas101

            1. Ps3 and Xbox have put out retro games IN ADDITION to the insane amount of awesome games that have come out on the systems. Right now Nintendo has nothing for the wii u
            2. Streaming previous gen games is just an OPTION available to people who want it. Again, Sony and MS will have enough games out that people will only get the retro games IF THEY REALLY WANT IT.
No one who buys a ps4 is going to say, “there’s nothing new to play, I guess i will stream ps1 games.”
So there is a HUGE difference between playing retro games because you ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT, and playing retro games because the “new” games havent come out yet.

        • greengecko007

I use emulators to play old games that I can’t get anymore. I’m not hurting any companies by playing a pirated LoZ The Minish Cap, because those games aren’t sold new anymore. Even if I went out and bought a used GBA game, none of the money I paid would go to the developers.

      • http://people.ign.com/returnofthetruth2 ReturnoftheTruth2

Keyboard? All you need is an Xbox 360 controller man! That is now the standard and is universal. Emulators save space, money and it does not make people like me by something they already bought again rolled out one game a month for 20 years when I can have them all now – for free!

        • AAAkabob

The D-pad on the 360 is no where as good as the Nintendo one, and that is an opinion agreed upon by many. Other than that, the current infrastructure isn’t capable of recognizing previous purchases. Plus it’s the convenience of using the console of your choice is essentially what you’re paying for if you already have it.

          • Ben Kapferer

You can also use a PS3 controller and the many PC-specific game controllers available. I think there’s even been some work done into making the Wii U Pro Controller compatible with PC.

      • MichelChartrand

Many 3rd party controllers are great, I’ve had lots of fun playing old games on my computer. Virtual Console sells games for $5 each which I think sometimes is a bit much for such an old game, especially if I’ve already purchased it. Emulators are great for that.

        • AAAkabob

You’ve already purchased it for that old console but not for PC. That’s like saying you bought it for 360, so you have the right to pirate it for PS3. Also, I’ve had only bad experiences with 3rd party controllers for PC.

Lastly, I agree $5 is a lot for many of the retro games, but if you really think about it $5 is not much. I’d say $2 would be the most fair price point possible…Mostly because I spent $2 on a whim at work for candy and a drink and that’s with discounts & sales.

          • MichelChartrand

Since it’s not a PC version, but the SNES version, I feel that my license is still valid. If someone made an X360 emulator for the PS3 that let me put my X360 game DVD in and play, I’d be okay with that.

          • AAAkabob

Interesting point, that’s like saying if someone made the PC version of Age of Empires work on the Wii U, should we not be able to play it.

I honestly have no clue, from a business standpoint, I would guess it would be unjust if they already made the product.

      • Ben Kapferer

So it’s impossible to plug in a USB controller?

    • Jimmy D. Fugate

It’s Virtual Console, get over it.

    • Alex

I buy old games that I haven’t played before, old games that I used to play, and old games are still the best games in the world.

    • D.M.T

I wonder why you think that people care about your opinion. I think it’s because people here give you attention. I wish people here could just ignore you

      • http://people.ign.com/returnofthetruth2 ReturnoftheTruth2

Shit, if YOU can’t just ignore me, then why would others do it?

    • Brian

Because we all know no other consoles make remakes of older game… xbox remakes Halo : Combat Evolved, there is even word of Halo 2 being remade again? serious, all great games need to be remade. Why always make new games when there already good games out there. Its like re-inventing the wheel doesn’t need to be done to have a good time!

  • Superstick98

What If Nintendo made a Super Mario Sunshine HD remake for Wii U?

    • D.M.T

Are you serious? Why make a Mario Sunshine HD when you can make Mario Galaxy 3 or a new 3D Mario?

The only reason why we are getting Wind Waker HD is because the new Zelda won’t be released until 2014 or 2015. This remake is Nintendo’s way of saying ‘stay patient’

      • thedeciderU

i’m kind of annoyed they’re remaking WW. i don’t mind buying old consoles to track down games. i’ve done it for years and years. anyways, my point is that we don’t need more remakes. why not play the original? they always seem to be better.

        • Twilord

Because we want Off-TV Play, and the possible addition of a Master Quest mode featuring “The Lost Temple”.

          • Cubester_64

AND for those who didn’t play the original.

          • Twilord

True, hahah (though I find it ironic someone with your name and avatar would add that)

      • briwas101

You are the only other person i have seen say “2014 or 2015″.
I have been telling nintenboys for a while now that New Zelda isnt coming out til 2014-15 because RIGHT NOW they are still in the “concepts” stage, meaning that they are still working on IDEAS for the game.
Nintenboys want to believe that New Zelda is coming out soon but it simply isnt.

    • greengecko007

Do you need to give the trolls any more reason to call Mario rehash? Remakes should ALWAYS take a back seat to the production of new games. I didn’t buy a Wii U to play games I already own. I want new games that I can’t play anywhere else.

      • Robknoxious1

@greengecko007 People (haters) will complain about Nintendo in general and Mario in particular regardless so why worry about it? Nintendo is realizing how much more time and resources HD games take. This is why they’re giving us Wind Waker HD to tide us over until the next all-new Zelda comes out.

With Wii U’s library in need of more depth why not do a few HD remakes? The core game is done, so they don’t have to develop new ideas or design new levels, just make it pretty and – in Sunshine’s case – maybe smooth out some rough edges from the original game. That could be done by Nintendo’s “b” teams while the “A” teams like EAD Tokyo handle the new Mario Galaxy type game.

        • greengecko007

For future reference, you don’t need to do the @name thing on disqus, the person you are replying to shows up next to your name.

Anyways, my point is, why can’t EVERYONE work on new games? I’d love to see all the teams under Nintendo working on new games, and even new IPs like Xenoblade. Remakes are fine in a small amount, but the same nintendo fans that bash games on other systems as “rehash” are asking for all of their favorite games to be remade. Hypocritical huh?

          • Robknoxious1

I’m not confident that every team that is able to achieve a decent quality HD treatment of an existing game would necessarily deliver a memorable new game – whether were talking about a new IP or existing one.

I agree that new is generally preferred but maybe a handful would be nice.

I really only point out other franchises that rehash the same-old, same-old when someone complains about too many Mario games but is stoked about the eighth COD game in a single generation.

        • briwas101

“Nintendo is realizing how much more time and resources HD games take”.
And that right there is the story of Nintendo.
Nintendo: we do WHAT we want, WHEN we want……even when its 7 years after everyone else.
Nintendo is too far behind the times. Despite what nintenboys like to say, Nintendo stopped “innovating” when Bill Clinton was still in office.
Almost every “new” nintendo gimmick is a step backwards.
Nintendo is just now learning about HD, and Nintendo’s competitors are about to release their SECOND HD system.
And wow, way to show off the increased power by making ANOTHER sidescrolling Mario game.
Nintendo, you sure do know how to wow us….

          • greengecko007

I somewhat agree. You really have to be a hardcore fanboy to not see that the Wii U launch was unimpressive. The only first party title released being a 2d Mario game isn’t going to cut it for most people. Nintendo even admits this. BUT, that is the first step to solving a problem, admitting that there is one in the first place. Good games that really show the Wii U’s power are coming, but I agree that they aren’t coming fast enough for some.

          • Robknoxious1

I like how you emphasize with all caps the word “second” as if it was something heinous. What comes after first? SECOND OMG!!!!

As far as the side scrolling Mario, really for my money they’re just more fun. 3D Mario games are high quality, visually impressive, and – especially with the Galaxy games – Nintendo has done some amazing things with 3D platformers. But to me the actual…. um…. platforming is much better in 2D. That said I can’t wait to see what they do with the next 3D Mario.

As far as innovating you say Nintendo was taking steps backwards? Well with Wii while it was still old SD tech you can’t say motion control for consoles was going backwards. If it was then Sony and MS followed them backwards by coming out with their own motion controls.

  • RyuNoHadouken

yes, more remakes!! said no one ever

    • Sonic the Hedgehog

      Said everyone, ever.

    • Mochlum

I like remakes so I guess that makes me no one

  • AAAkabob

I’m reading through the Hyrule Historia and now want to play through the Legend of Zelda series in chronological order. Nintendo get on this!

  • Chiwawa

whats all this ‘might’?! why the hell cant devs just make it for wii u damn it?!

  • rich

great classic. Played through it many a time when it first came out. quite short but sounded and looked beautiful back in the day. especially the cake level

  • Michael Jurado

lets hope this mickey game doesn’t bomb like a certain one did not too long ago >.>

  • thedeciderU

this game was good in the ’90s, but i’d be much more excited about a new game. now, maybe they’re expanding it, but i don’t care that much. i have the old one and i’m not interested in a new one. is the gaming industry slowly becoming the movie industry? if so, i fear the future. i missed almost the whole seventh generation so my appetite is whet for new games. i spent the last 6-7 years post grad school (and really the two years i was in grad school) playing for nostalgia sake, and it was fantastic. but now i have enough money to spend on new games and new IPs. i hope someone makes them!
