Game & Wario may retail for $39.99 in North America

Nintendo knows that the Wii U is in much need of high quality software, and it seems that they’re taking action already. If retailers’ listings are accurate, Nintendo will be releasing Game & Wario in North America for $39.99, two-thirds the standard US retail release price.

Both Amazon and Gamestop have listed the game at this unexpectedly low price. The latter listed an initial price of $59.99, but has since slashed it to match that of Amazon.

Bestbuy’s listing sits at $59.99, but, all things considered, the price could be temporary.

Nintendo has outlined its plans to spur Wii U sales with new software, so perhaps they hope that Game & Wario will achieve for the Wii U what Nintendo Land could not. After all, this new game is a first-party family-friendly title. Its gameplay is also rather unique as far as video games go. Players of all ages can spend five minutes or several hours playing. This uniqueness and versatility could therefore help to distinguish the Wii U from other home consoles. As such, a cheaper price point would be icing on the cake, motivating casual and hardcore gamers alike to pick up a copy. All in all, a new listing of $39.99 could well be as accurate as we hope it is.

Game & Wario gets its North American release on June 23rd, but no official launch dates for Europe and the UK have been confirmed.

Are you excited for Game & Wario’s impending release? If not, has this new price swayed your decision? Let us know in the comments!

Great! Not every game should be $60.

With the recent information about The Wonderful 101, I’m curious if they won’t release it at a $39.99 price point, too.

      • AAAkabob

If you read the twitter feed of the VP for Platinum games, you’ll see that he clears up controversy and pretty much says the game won’t be short

      • Jonn McNally

If the game is by Platinum Games then I doubt they’ll make a rational decision like that.

        • Henry Hotspur

Funny you say that, considering they HAVE made decisions like that. Anarchy Reigns was $30 when it was released in North America.

      • jay

Funny thing is. I’ve been writing a game for a few years now.

It is short and if it ever comes about I plan to shoot for $39.99

My belief has always been “Games are too long. Games are too expensive”

        • ThunderGod_Cid

I disagree, I say games aren’t long enough, especially if they cost $60.

    • Wayne Beck

I couldn’t agree more. If Developers can get costs down, they should lower Retail Prices. The $60 price tag is hurting Developers a whole lot more than anything else at this point. People want a lot of games, but the vast majority can afford a $60 game every other month, if that.

Game & Waluigi is better than Game & Wario

  • Thomas Fitzgibbon

    Looks brilliantly Asian :-)

  • Jonn McNally

Great! Was going to wait for this to get a price-cut, but looks like I won’t have to!

I think that was the idea. It downright bombed in Japan. So they have a pretty good idea that it will bomb in NA…. But for $40, day one purchase for me.

      • jay

        It bombed it Japan?

That’s sad cause Warioware is one of my favorite IPs of all time. And this is supposed to be developed by Warioware Inc. a fictional developer that makes some of my favorite games. If you’ve never played Warioware you owe it to yourself to check out the original on Gamecube. Its Nuckin Futz!!

Funny it would bomb in Japan considering their love for randomness and wtf moments.

  • david jarman

    It looks really fun.

  • RonnieMexico

shit….dez gamez are still 2 expensive.

    • Alex

Are you that cheap, this is a very good price, and later in future their might be games that would cost $70.

      • thedeciderU

hell, remember genesis and snes days? those cartidges WERE $70, in 1991 no less.

        • Alex

I did heard some games in the past that costed $70 like Pokemon Snap for N64.

          • thedeciderU

yes those games were crazy expensive, although i’ve never played any of the pokemon games.

        • ThunderGod_Cid

          Yeah, I remember those days.

My local Wal-Mart was selling MegaMan X2 for $64.99 back in 1995. And I remember asking my dad to buy it for me, he (obviously) said “hell no.”

It wasn’t able to play MMX2 until the Mega Man X Collection came out on the PS2, and that collection was $39.99 brand new.

          • thedeciderU

love those collections. although, it feels different on a nintendo controller/console. i had the mega man anniversary collection on PS2. epic and great value. then my mom accidentally gave away a box i had in storage…with my PS2 and ALL my original games. i’ve since re-bought. ugh hahaha

          • thedeciderU

sega genesis, street fighter II: special championship edition – $70! that’s my best memory of this. man what an incredible game.

  • Elem187

I’ll bite at $40…. I have the basic sku, and I was not going to pay $60 for Nintendoland, a minigame collection, I waited for some used copies to show up at a local retailer before buying it at $35…. I would have done the same with G&W.

I just don’t feel minigame collections are EVER worth the full $60, even most “AAA” titles arent worth $60…. For a game to be worth $60 it needs tons of replay value, something I never really have found in minigame collections…. Monster Hunter 3 is easily worth the full price tag, Nintendoland not so much.

This is a game I will have to play before I decide to buy. Looks interesting enough but I am not sure I will jump on this one right away.

    • thedeciderU

      agreed

  • Seth S. Scott

cant wait for this one! $40 is a sweet spot too and i’ll definitely pick it up for that!

  • Ducked

I saw this on GameStop too for $39.99.
Personally I think Nintendo should make the Wii U games to retail at $49.99 full price. I think it may turn some people off that Wii U games are the same price as PS4 games are. Then again I could be wrong, that’s just my opinion.

    • mikel334u2

Yea, people got the Wii because of its <$50 price tag for most games, so I hope Nintendo realizes that not every game needs to be $60 and that they learned that lesson with Nintendo Land.

      • Ducked

Yeah, a game like Nintendo Land should not be $60.

    • jay

That actually helped the ps1 a great deal. Everything that made sony great. sony threw away :(

I remember ps1 games retailing at $29.99 and n64 games retailed at $49.99.

      • Ducked

$49.99? I only saw that price at the ripoff places like Toys R us and Best Buy. It sure was nice when games were only $30.

  • Jeffrey Debris

I was going to get this game regardless of whether it would cost full price. But this is nice news. That way I have 20 Euros left to spend on another game ;)
