Pikmin 3 gameplay features three playable captains

Shigeru Miyamoto talks to Rolling Stone magazine about some of the design decisions made for Pikmin 3.

pikmin3-gamep

Despite being announced as a launch title for the Wii U, Pikmin 3 has slowly slipped from the launch window as creator Shigeru Miyamoto continues to work on the game. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Miyamoto stated that in order to allow players a more tactical approach to gaming, the third installment will feature three different playable captains:

“With Pikmin 3, you’ll have the ability to have three different captains or leaders of Pikmin groups and you can switch between them. So it sort of allows you to approach the game from a much more strategic position. The volume of work that you can get done within the timeframe has increased dramatically. And so that in and of itself really enhances the depth of strategy that’s available to you in that game.”

The addition of another captain beyond what was added in Pikmin 2 is an interesting one, but we currently have no information on whether or not the environments will be expanded to allow for this additional element.

The game is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2013.

This has nothing to do with the article but just hear me out guys.I’ll get to the point:

    BUY 3RD PARTY GAMES!

Seriously, buy good 3rd party games. This is a no brainer, but if developers see that their games sell well on the Wii U,other devs will at the very least consider to bring their games to the system
They fear that bringing over their games would be a bad decision. They fear that Nintendo’s games will overshadow theirs. We,as consumers and more specifically Wii U owners, are the only ones who can show them otherwise.Show them that we DO want third party games

By “good 3rd party games” I mean games like NFS, the recently confirmed for Wii U .Deus Ex,and heck, even Rayman Legends. They’re improving those games just for the Wii U;lets not make their efforts go to waste.Rather, let’s keep it that way

I don’t know about you guys, but I for one would love to see big AAA titles come to the Wii U.And by the looks of things right now,its getting there, but not quite yet.The system is capable enough, all it needs is a chance

I post this a second time hoping that more of you will see. That is all and thanks for your attention(again)

    • The_Last_Metroid

      DO IT NOWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Nintedward

      Don’t panic fellow Nintendonian!

Everyone’s mind has been warped by the industry. It’s all about SALES!!!!!!

      but is it ?

let me give you a little example.

Nintendo sells 40 Million Wiiu’s in 6 years . They get ALL of their money back that they have invested and make a 50% profit on top

Sony sells 80 Million PS4′s in 6 years but have been selling them at a loss. They have less money than they started out with before the PS4.

Which one is better ? Ideally , they should be doing both selling as much hardware at as much profit as possible.

But if the Wiiu only sells 40 million lifetime . It DOESN’T matter as long as Nintendo don’t lose money on the Wiiu and pay everyones wages then they are doing very good business. You ask Nintendo if they would be happy with that , you bet their asses they would! A – they have made money B- they are in for the next gen and their future is assured once again.

The Gamecube sold just over 20 Million units. but Nintendo did actually make money of each console sold and had legendary software attache rate as always.

Point being. Nintendo is fine even if the Wiiu sells the same amount as the Gamecube did (which is highly unlikely) and they will always have their unquestionably successful handhelds to fall back on , which even Smartphones can’t seem to slow down.

I just don’t get all the panic and doom journalism surrounding Nintendo. Truth is Nintendo is a stable ship and they have been from the start. Sony is the one trying to stop their ship from sinking …

      • Laud

There is a lot of doom news because that’s what haters like to read and Nintendo fanboys are much less willing to hate on other consoles than PS or 360 fanboys.

        • Lord Carlisle

Don’t kid yourself. There is JUST as much hating on our part as theirs.

          • david jarman

Yeah, on this website. I go to all the website and most the hating is done when someone trolls the nintendo side, or if that site posts a thread for nintendo that links to entire site to let the bashing begin.

          • Lord Carlisle

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Try editing grammar and diction. (Not being pompous, I’m actually confused)

          • david jarman

What I’m trying to say is that every site that I go to its always the ps4 fans(mostly) or Xbox fans starting crap. Some multi-console sites that I go to link threads that’s meant for nintendo fans to the Sony and Xbox side of the website. As if they want to see the bashing of one another.

          • Lord Carlisle

I think the “hatred” is pretty equal, but hey, we’re entitled to opinions.

          • david jarman

I’m just saying from what I’ve seen. I admit have been part of that hate for awhile, but its all been just to those trolling. I don’t go to ps and ms websites to start a fuss. I go to learn about each system.

          • ICHI

Well i was an active member in a pretty decent (skill wise) xbox clan, played and won a few wgl series. We had a section for ps3 and nintendo where we could post about games we would look forward to and as a nintendo fan some of my close friends or people I had gamed with for almost 10 years (original xbox too) used to get pretty malicious and petty. Its a fucking personal opinion, I dont care about anyone elses, I just dont understand trolls.

          • Nintenjoe82

and I bet plenty of the anti Nintendo trolls, troll other people like PS3 and Xbox fans from the point of view of a Nintendo fanboy because they are just trolls.

        • greengecko007

There isn’t nearly as much negative news as there is positive news. The first page on Wii U daily currently contains only positive or neutral articles. The “doom” only comes from the comments section where trolls and fanboys run rampant.

      • Silent

People shouldnt be worried about anything since Nintendo knows exactly what they are doing.

        • Nintedward

Exactly! It gets me really angry when insignificant journalists who have ridiculously big ego’s have the cheek to say something like ”Nintendo should go software only” . Why ? because YOU want them to ? they’ve turned themselves into a global powerhouse through Software on their own hardware. They won’t stop because some idiot writes a doom article.

It’s just stupid. It’s like people saying ”Warner Bros should stop what they are doing.

Nintendo is the best gaming company with the best ideas. And unfortunately for Nintendo this creates as much negativity as it does positivity for some wierd unknown reason. People are hating on the People who do Mario , Zelda , Smash bros , Pokemon , Mario kart etc . What the hell is wrong with them ? lol

          • Silent

Jealousy,my friend, is the reason. Jealousy is the enemy of mankind

          • Nobody

Well, you have to understand that people who want Nintendo to go software only feel that Nintendo is a great software developer but makes backwards choices with their hardware.

And as much good Nintendo brings, they haven’t been powerhouses since the SNES. While the Wii had strong sales, everyone seems to just see Nintendo as a joke outside of their handhelds.

          • Nintedward

Not at all. Powerhouse since the SNES ? The Wii sold twice as much as the SNES. I see the other companies as a joke compared to Nintendo.

          • Nobody

I think I should be saying that strong sales don’t mean everything. In the same way graphics and console power don’t mean anything.

Both the PS2 and the Wii had strong sales. Both were the weaker consoles, but the big difference was the general opinion of the consoles. People look back on the PS2 and say that it was an amazing console. And for very good reasons, it got heavy amounts of support and all the major games where made for it. What I’m trying to say is that, the PS2 had sales and a lot of respect, while the Wii had sales but few people care about it. The other companies are far from jokes now that they have dominated the market, leaving Nintendo high and dry.

          • Nintedward

Nobody has left Nintendo high and dry. People will look back at Wii as one of the best consoles ever. Mario Kart Wii sold more than any Microsoft or Sony game ever.

Seriously , that’s just your perception of the Wii. The PS3 was a fail and it nearly destroyed Sony and now the PS vita is a failure so far.
360 was a crap PC with barely any exclusives.

That’s my perception of those 2 consoles.

You say Wii was a ”joke” but let’s speak about the facts.

The Wii sold more software AND hardware than 360 or PS3 . The Wii made 10 times as much money for Nintendo as the other 360 or ps3 did.
The Wii’s highest selling games DESTROYED the sales of 360 and Ps3 games.
Mario kart wii sold more than MW3 did on PS3 , 360 and PC combined.
Mario galaxy is the highest rated game of all time.
Motion controll was revolutionary and provided a much needed breathe of fresh air and a boost for the industry.
The Virtual console allowed you to play all your old favorite games.

Don’t come at me with that Wii was a ”joke” bullshit. The 360 and Ps3 are jokes. Nintendo + a PC is all you need.

For the record the PS2 was an over rated DVD player. I prefered the Gamecube , Xbox and even Dreamcast to it.

          • Nobody

A lot of those high selling games were bundled with the Wii itself or just popular games remade from the SNES or N64 era. And Mario getting a high rating is bound to happen, Nintendo can make great games, I’d be more shocked if they made a terrible Mario game. And while I agree that motion control is great, it didn’t become amazing until Nintendo released their Motion Plus and the competition made Kinect.

And VC would be great, if they actually released entire libraries and did way more imports/localizations. I certainly hope you weren’t hoping for great games like Sweet Home or Clock Tower to pop up for you to play on your Wii. Because most of my favorites didn’t get put up on the Wii’s VC, minus Sin and Punishment. Also, it’s not like VC is a new concept. There are emulators and console rereleases/collections all the time for great classics that everyone should play. And they are usually better deals too. The Kirby collection is certainly a better buy than doing it through VC, and that’s just one example.

And I didn’t feel that the Wii is a joke, but the way most people see the Wii, it is by popular opinion. I actually do defend the Wii when it deserves it. But the 360 and the PS3 are not jokes in the slightest when you consider the amount of games both get. Where’s my Scott Pilgrim game for my Wii? Where is my Skull Girls? Where is my Double Dragon Neon? Where is my Silent Hill? There is just more variety on the 360 and PS3. And you seem to disregard the fact that Nintendo aims for a different audience than the other two, so to brag about how Nintendo struck gold with families, kids, and people who don’t game a lot is needless.

And that “overrated DVD player” lived through two generations, got more games than any other system, has seen some of histories greatest games and may forever be loved and remembered for having such a rich variety of games. Not even the Wii can come close to touching it. The Wii will be loved too, but nowhere near the PS2.

          • Revolution5268

“While the Wii had strong sales, everyone seems to just see Nintendo as a joke outside of their handhelds.”
Even the handheld they been seen as a joke, be real here. Also a note, the snes was not a “powerhouse” if it did the snes would have lost the 16 bit war and that’s a fact. No powerful console has ever win a console sale.Same goes with handhelds i don’t get why people are piss at 3ds when this is history getting repeated.

          • Nobody

I meant Nintendo themselves being a powerhouse. And the SNES was pretty powerful compared to the Genesis, being released much later.

It’s also possible to be powerful and win, that was the case with the 360 and PS3 over the Wii. Wii got more sales, but the 360 and PS3 got the most games. You could almost say that there is more than one way to win or lose when it comes to gaming consoles.

          • Nintedward

No. Nintendo was a fraction of the company they are today during the SNES era , do some research.

DS + Wii sales = over a quater of a billion units.
SNES + Gameboy = less than half of that.

And yeah , power means nothing. The N64 and gamecube were both significantly more capable machines than PS1 and 2.

          • Kyle Berger

ur profile picture never gets old

      • RoadyMike

…I never mentioned sales nor the PS4…and I’m sure I’m not panicking either lol.Silly Nintedward :D
We ALL should know by now(yes even the haters have to accept the fact)that the Wii U will be just fine in the long run;as long as it has good games that people want to play. That’s the point I want to make

The system is capable, has an install base that will only continue to grow. All WE need to do is show everyone, especially the 3rd party dev, that the “Nintendo fans only want to play Nintendo games” idea is false. And to do that,we buy 3rd party titles(Not EVERY single one,of course)
The diehard Nintendo fans that DID stick with this idea missed out on great games like Portal,Journey,Bioshock and many others that aren’t your typical overrated bloody “adventure” and were really great worthwhile titles;as good as any Nintendo game

If Devs see that their games sell well on Nintendo’s system, they’ll feel more confident on bringing their games over to the Wii U.I mean, come on guys, who wouldn’t want a Nintendo system with great Nintendo games AND great AAA 3rd party games?

        • http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=UUYKptJ3wOiYnsvA5tNOT2TQ Blu_J

finally someone else who couldnt have said it almost word for word like i would have. now lets go to every wii u site there is & put up the same messages…. lol.. all jokes aside i truly agree with both of ur messages it wont do us any good to just support 1st party only thats going to happen regardless. it would have been nice to get tomb raider on the wii u. we still have a chance with injustice, & batman arkham origines & more to come. PLEASE!.. wii u community lets do this buy & support 3rd party games wii can do it. i have been but just a few of us cant do it alone. i have been putting messages like this all over miiverse just to try & get people to open there eyes to more 3rd party support. good message roadymike.

      • ICHI

I think that sony has been making money on their hardware for a while now, but am certain they have lost market share in every other industry they used to lead since ps3′s launch. Which is why they are the company most in danger this gen, they have more riding on the ps4 doing well as a business. I personally would hate to see sony go, with less competition the awful things the xbox does with paid online service (while lagging my machine due to advertising) would have less opposition. Playstation plus is a fantastic paid online model you dont have to sign up for to enjoy online but rewards you with games as long as you subscribe.

    • Vinicius

I know this isn’t the place either, but for who might interest, Batman Arkham City is incredibly cheap at Bestbuy! for only $20! Assassin’s Creed 3 is on sale as well for 30 bucks.

    • http://people.ign.com/fliadaloisio fliadaloisio

      Agreed 100%.

    • Fred

I’ve loved NBA 2K13 and Sonic Racing if anyone’s been considering these 2 3rd party games I’ll vouch for them!

    • Nintenjoe82

I’m with you. I can’t afford them all but I’ve bought many of the main ones. Maybe if we all buy ME3 and NFS and FIFA and spam the Miiverse from within the game EA will change their stance. Not just EA though, Ubisoft must’ve got raped by the shovelware they launched with. We should buy it now it’s £10 and spam the miiverse asking for real games! Can Raving Rabbids Mini Game X really be that bad? The original ones were brilliant.

Having said that, I think the 3rd party games will only come back when the Wii U install base is larger and the headlines are good sales wise. After hearing what Square were expecting sales wise from their last few games, they’ll probably all be in disarray when the PS4 and Xbox launch games don’t sell 100,000,000 copies in 24hrs and jump ship to the wii u :)

    • http://twitter.com/DJDALLYDEE Dallas Scott Cooper

As much as I agree with what you’re saying, I won’t buy a third party game just because; it has to appeal to me. As much as I want to support third party games, I still don’t want to waste my money on Lego City: Undercover.

      • RoadyMike

I’m not telling anybody to buy a game “just because”.If you don’t want something, simply don’t get it
What I’m saying is,if there’s anyone else like me that wants to see the Wii U get big 3rd party games,we’re gonna have to show the devs that we want those games. And I also said buying EVERY 3rd party game isn’t necessary.Mostly just the ones that really try to embrace the capabilities of the Wii U or make the “definitive version” of the game for the Wii U(like ZombiU,NFS and Deus Ex)Maybe, just maybe, after seeing how the games that these devs put a lot of effort in,other devs will put more effort in the Wii U version of their oown games and not just some lazy ass port(if they bring said games to the system at all)

      • Veries Seals

I dont know bro, think you are really missing out. I bought it and love it to death. The game is fantastic! You may want to reconsider lego city. It is huge and funny! Great voice acting. Really high quality game. I hope they are working on part 2, lol.

        • ICHI

Yeah I wasn’t too hyped for the game by the time it launched but got it for the kids, though the load times can be terrible I keep giggling my tits off at the movie references while the kids keep looking at me funny. “I to this day don’t know what those two Italian ladies were singing about……..or why those men are dancing with each other”

      • Zuxs13

Lego City isn’t a third party game.

    • Michael Jurado

very good point personally I never owed a ps3 (after them getting hacked i steered clear of that system good thing too it got hacked twice :P) and I don’t like the 360 but instead of stating why i don’t like them i’m going to say that I love batman arkam city and that new batman game that was confirmed earlier today :D So long as we get “good 3rd party games” they’ll have earned my COINS like ACIII I find it a little dull due to the “realistic graphics” but over looking that it’s a great game and i’ll gladly get ACIV for a few reasons 1. PIRATES!!! 2. Ubisoft 3. naval battles :D anyhoe I totally agree with you everyone buy good 3rd party games cuz if we do we get more and if we get more AAA titles there is no need for a ps4 or a 720 :P

    • grandlx2

How sad that this is what it’s come down to. Wii U owners begging others to buy games. What’s funny is that you are doing all this, and you don’t even work for Nintendo lol. Just a lot of free time I assume. You’d think if Nintendo wanted more money they’d advertise the system.. they don’t even advertise the wii u here in california. No one knows what a wii u is lol. Only gamers with knowledge know of it’s existence. Glad I’m not just a nintendo buyer. Or else i’d have a crappy gaming experience waiting between games so much!

      • RoadyMike

Begging?Funny,I’m not on my knees crying about it :/

Although advertising the system is exactly what the Wii U
        needs,advertising it right now wouldn’t be a smart idea.There aren’t
games on the system that are a “must buy!” or games that we haven’t
        played last gen

All I’m saying is(for the THIRD time…)IF anyone else wants to see the Wii U getting the multiplats, show the devs that investing in the WiiU isn’t so dangerous as they make it out to be.Only IF anyone else wants this.If not, ignore my comment and go on with life

Yes,lots of free time on my hands atm

    • RockieOllie

Don’t fret Watch Dogs and Batman Origins are as good a bought.

    • jcnba28

I agree, which is partly why I set up this petition to get Sega to release the original Bayonetta on Wii U eShop before B2 comes out.

We the Nintendo fans needs to show the developers that we want their games.

Please sign and share this petition:

      http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/petition-for-sega-to-re-release-the-original-bayonetta-on-the-wii-u-eshop

    • Zuxs13

I agree, the Funny thing is so far I haven’t bought a single first party WiiU game (except Nintendo Land which came with my WiiU) And i plan on buying more 3rd party. Though i will buy Lego City this weekend.

  • RyuNoHadouken

i have a feeling this game is gonna be wack

  • http://www.facebook.com/benjamin.moberly Benjamin Moberly

Wait 3? What happened to the 4th one?

    • Cerus98

Fourth what? Pikmin game? There are only two so far. If you mean captains then things change, that should be expected. But perhaps its four in coop or some other mode and this quote is talking about single player story mode.

      • http://www.facebook.com/benjamin.moberly Benjamin Moberly

But… at E3 they even showed a picture of the fourth captain. I know things change but this was unexpected.

        • Lord Carlisle

Well he could still be in the game, just as an unplayable character. Maybe he pilots the ship and plays a similar role to the ship from Pikmin 2.

        • Jon

I think it is 3 captains in the main game, the 4 of them would have been for the multiplayer

  • D.M.T

Nintendo has been working on this game for too long in my opinion. This game was first announced for Wii and then it became a Wii U game in 2011 I believe. Give us a release date already. I love Nintendo but sometimes they do things that I don’t like or agree with. For example:

    1. Why is Luigi’s Mansion 2 a 3DS exclusive? Are you kidding me Nintendo? Luigi’s Mansion on Wii U would have sold better than New Super Mario U.

    2. Why is Nintendo so focused on 3DS? Yeah the handheld is selling well and I’m happy for it’s success but 3DS is not your main game system Nintendo. Wii U should be Nintendo’s top priority since announcement of the Wii U in 2011.

    3. I understand why Nintendo is so secretive sometimes, I’m a secretive person myself but this is not the time to be secretive. Gamers want reason to buy the Wii U.

    4. Why are some games handheld exclusives? I’ve seen some of DS and 3DS games that never make it to Nintendo consoles. One of them is Nintendogs. Bring every possible game to the Wii U.

    • Laud

Luigis mansion 2 is a 3ds exclusive because the costs aren’t high and profit makes it worth it.

Nintendo is focused on the 3DS because soon they’ll have to shift focus to the Wii U once E3 comes around.

Nintendo keeps their cards close, no one knows what they’re doing and they currently have no competition so why would they ruin their E3 just to satisfy your lack of patience?

You can’t just bring every games over like that, it’s not that simple you know.

      • D.M.T

Lack of patience? I have more patience than a lot of Wii U owners combined

        • Silent

No you dont. A lot of us are waiting patiently for E3. Meanwhile, you…..complaining all the way.

    • brian murphy

theres supposed to be a luigi’s mansion 2 for the wii U later on i remember when they first announced the game they said both systems would have there own just dont see it coming anytime soon

    • Lord Carlisle

I agree. Nintendogs would work great with the gamepad. A portable Luigi’s Mansion does feel underwhelming. And when are they going to announce a Pokemon game for this system? And I mean a REAL one, not a spin-off.

Just wait for E3. I’m sure Nintendo’s got things up its sleeves.

      • Tim van Broekhoven

A new Pokémon game? Never heard of uhm…. Maybe….. POKÉMON X AND Y????????????

        • Lord Carlisle

I meant for the U. There. Fixed my comment!

          • RoadyMike

Think about it for a moment, when was the last time we had a full fledged Pokemon game on Nintendo’s home console? There’s your answer…

          • Lord Carlisle

            …Gamecube? Well, it’d sell nonetheless.

          • Silent

            Not happening..soorryy!

      • Nintedward

They could make an awesome Nintendogs game that links up to 3DS and wiiu. Play with him in HD on the big screen using gamepad to fling frizbies and then transfer him to your 3DS and take him with you to get streetpass hits and what not!

      • Mizzah Tee

” A portable Luigi’s Mansion does feel underwhelming.”

You obviously haven’t played it. It’s better than the original in every way and honestly is better to suited for a handheld. An amazing game nonetheless.

        • Lord Carlisle

You’re right, I haven’t. So mqybe I don’t have the right to say that. But it’s all good as long as a console version comes eventually!

      • Guest

I have both the Wii u and 3ds and don’t regret Luigi’s Mansion coming out on 3ds. It’s so much better than the original, beginning to end. I like that Nintendo tries to keep their portable and home experiences separate like they’ve always done.

    • Fred

      You want Nintendogs? Really?

      • Tim van Broekhoven

Says a guy with the name “nintendawg” -_-

        • D.M.T

I’m not a fan of Nintendogs dude. I’ve never played that game

          • Tim van Broekhoven

why would you wanna see it on wii u then? And why is your name nintendawg then?

          • D.M.T

Because i want Wii U to have a lot of games. My name is Nintendawg because the name sounds cool

          • Tim van Broekhoven

            Ok

          • Zuxs13

How can you say you are not a fan of it if you have never tried it? hmmh?

          • D.M.T

Because it’s not possible to be a fan of a game you’ve never played.

      • D.M.T

No i dont but others want it on a console

    • TrueWiiMaster

      1. Actually, it’s all but certain that Luigi’s Mansion would have sold less than NSMBU. Just look at previous comparisons. NSMBWii outsold Mario Galaxy by more than 2 to 1, and Galaxy had a two year head start.

      2. Nintendo’s not exactly focused on the 3DS. Many of the games coming to it right now have been coming since before the 3DS was out (including Luigi’s Mansion and Animal Crossing). In fact, at the moment the Wii U has more new games announced than the 3DS.

      3. Try “X”, Windwaker HD, 3D Mario, SSB, Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2, or Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. Nintendo’s been giving reasons to buy a Wii U, but those reasons won’t release any sooner if Nintendo divulged every detail. They’re keeping people in suspense. Wait until E3, just 2 more months.

      4. Because Nintendo has a handheld. They’re not just focusing on one or the other. Many handheld games are made specifically to be for handheld systems. That’s why Luigi’s Mansion and Paper Mario are mission based for example. That said, I do want to see some handheld franchises come to the Wii U, especially Advance Wars, and I do think games like Nintendogs and Brain Age would do well on the Wii U.

    • Veries Seals

I do like Luigi’s Mansion, but you never know, there may be a Wii U version or an eshop crossover in the works.

  • NintendoNoob

Well that’s good, I don’t always want to be the same captain all campaign

  • Nicholas Perkins

hope it comes out soon :)

  • Mario

Let me see… The only captains I know from the series are Olimar and Louis. But right now, I’m not even sure if they’ll be in the game. It seems to me that they’re being replaced by four captains. I wonder. Who are these guys?

    • tronic307

I haven’t seen Olimar yet. Maybe he’s been *gasp* KIDNAPPED!

      • Yoshiwhirlwind

They should send Louie to look for him in a haunted forest inhabited by ghostly pikmin. Olimar? Ooolimaaaar!

  • Fred

Does anyone know if this game has Multiplayer? Co-op?

    • TrueWiiMaster

I’m pretty sure it has local multiplayer, but it doesn’t have any online (unless they’ve added it).

      • tronic307

Online would be a blast, oh well.

        • David

Nintendo is new to online. They are like Cavemen.

          • TrueWiiMaster

They already said why they left online play out of Pikmin 3. In Pikmin, a moment’s lag could literally ruin the game. You could lose half your “army” with just a second or two of lag. Since Nintendo couldn’t guarantee that lag wouldn’t happen in online play, they didn’t include it. That said, anything could have changed by now. After all, Pikmin 3 was pushed back 6-8 months.

          • David

Isn’t that the case with any game? Clutch shooter for example? Nintendo needs to improve its online infrastructure. Look at XBOX LIVE, yes they charge for their service, but they invest in high-quality servers with hardly any downtime. Nintendo servers are slow and are in need of improvements. It’s not the games fault, its Nintendo’s unorthodox online infrastructure.

          • TrueWiiMaster

Actually, no. Lag happens in shooters all the time, and it often does kill you, but you respawn a few seconds later. That’s not how it would happen in Pikmin. 10-30 minutes could be made pointless by a couple seconds of lag.

I actually haven’t had a problem with Nintendo’s servers being too slow. I mean, I’m not a huge online gamer, but I’ve played games like Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing, and Mario Kart online with no problem. More recently, Kid Icarus and Luigi’s Mansion both play seamlessly online. While Nintendo’s online could be better, I wouldn’t say it’s bad.

          • David

That could be made the case with any RTS game like Age of Empires II. Your argument is invalid, Nintendo chose not to implement online because they are incredibly flawed and are new to the online world. There is always going to be lag, however there are many steps one can take as a software developer to provide a solution, like i.e.: time-stamp algorithms. That being said, what Nintendo needs to do is invest in its online infrastructure and purchase high-quality servers and design a better client / server communication.

          • TrueWiiMaster

No, it really couldn’t. Or did I miss the part in Age of Empires where a giant monster kills 20-40% of your soldiers in one attack?

          • David

      • Fred

Is the local multiplayer a new mode or is it co-op in the main game?

        • TrueWiiMaster

Pikmin 2 actually had a versus mode, so that might be returning, but I don’t think it was ever confirmed whether there will be full co-op in the main story.

          • Fred

Yes I own Pikmin 2, but I’m hoping for co-op in the campaign

  • David

    When does this game out?

  • Aleks

If this game is time limit based, as far as im concerned Mr. Miyamoto wasted his expanded development window. I HATE the artificial, non-strategy based stress of time limits. Time limit crap (like in a bunch of skyward sword) equals = no purchase.

    • RoadyMike

      Suit yourself :D

    • Nobody

Time limits are a valid gameplay mechanic, especially when applied to the game as a whole. It allows for tension, which is useful depending on the story/experience the game creators want you to have. So, for example, you could make a survival horror game with a 24 hour (condensed time) limit and add to the stress and tension to the game. In fact, it seems like LM was going to have a time limit as well.

I’ve never played Pikmin but from what I understand, the time limit makes sense considering the story. And I don’t remember SS having a time limit. Are you sure you aren’t confusing SS with the equally great MM?

      • Aleks

No, in Skyward sword when you have a tiny time limit to retrieve tears or something while the nights chase you, or actually you got the tears to delay them.

My main objection as a seasoned gamer is that, in the case of Zelda, I’ve loved and played them all. TO ME, SS (the greatest offender) has replaced exploration and breadth for regular time limit sections. My FAVORITE game(s), ive noticed have traded exploration and the STRESS of ingenious puzzles for more time limits. Yes, its a valid blah blah blah, but NOT in my favorite Nintendo properties. If you would trade Ocarinas exploration and open world for the linear time limits of SS then we are very different gamers. Oh heres a better way to put it- Lazy crap developers use time limits everywhere. Nintendo ruled with ingenuity and FUN. Time limits are NOT fun- to ME. (not looking to argue- just expressing my own opinion. I hope you love Pikmin.)

        • Silent

Oldest is not always the best. OoT is not the best zelda game just because a lot of people grew up with it. Compared to today’s zelda games, OoT is primitive.

    • Silent

If you dont like it, dont buy it. It is that simple. The game is not going to fail if you dont buy it, so dont act like you are the pretty pretty princess.

      • Aleks

Relax, its not like i kicked over your princess kitty tea party. #1) I wont. #2) I don’t care. #3) I am. POOF! your a fairy! :P lol

  • Dominic Coradazzi

All right, sounds good to me
…of course this also begs the question; Who are they?

    • Nintenjoe82

Could it also mean we’ll have split screen and one on gamepad play possible?

This game looks beautiful to me, I have high expectations.

  • jcnba28

That screenshot looks awesome, really looking forward to this game.

  • Michael Jurado

personally i would rather have a game get pushed back a few months to really make it something special than to get some crappy DLC down the line and pay more for a game that I bought to make it slightly more awesome … for example left 4 dead 2 its a great game but you are seriously going to look me in the eyes and say you couldn’t fit all these maps on the disc -_-

    • CyanideInsanity

Well that’s a poor example. The dlc is free, except on xbox because of microsoft not valve. I do agree it would be better do have more on disc content especially when it can fit, though if it is free it doesn’t matter much.

      • Michael Jurado

right i have a 360 and basically none of its free which is why i’m upset about dlc, its left a sour taste in mouth and in my wallet basically this coming gen of systems i’m sticking too nintendo … my old mistake was buying a 360

  • Yoshiwhirlwind

Pikmin had one captain, Pikmin 2 had two captains, Pikmin 3 has three captains.

    • CuriousManiac

Was just about to say that, but 3 should be the maximum, otherwise you would need another player. Would co-op work on it? I wonder how it will work out.

  • blah

Didn’t we see the three captains in a presentation on E3 (I think) already?

  • DemonRoach

    Looks incredibly boring.

    • DemonRoach

      Ugh, and it’s 720p shit.

      • Captain~Raid

Coming from the pest who don’t know shit.

      • [000]

Think about it though: They started development a very long time ago, before the Wii U even existed, and it was intended to be a launch title. There’s no way it would be fully optimized if it was created in that time frame.

        • CuriousManiac

Yeah wasn’t it meant to be on the Wii? it got pushed back onto the Wii U, now its pushed back further. I think this will be a test to see if they can produce a good quality HD game. But in the end Nintendo cares more about game play, and they are just catching up.

  • http://www.facebook.com/UncannyCaleb Caleb Turner

Ok the article is about Pikmin 3 what the FUCK? PS2 wii SnEs.who cares a great is coming out and all you talk about is console wars. if you play on ps3 wii U or 360 who cares. they all have great games , so shut up and play.

  • MujuraNoKamen
  • Ducked

The good news on Wii U daily keeps coming, and coming.

  • http://4812cpvideos.webs.com/ Zack4812

Pikmin 1: Olimar, Pikmin 2: Olimar and Louie, Pikmin 3: 3 captians. I see what they did there.

  • MujuraNoKamen

I thought it would be 4 captains :’( maybe this is an error and they are 4, or maybe not. Either way Pikmin 3 is gonna rock and I’m one of many anxiously awaiting its release.

  • uPadWatcher

U mad… Ian baby? The Wii U isn’t garbage… it’s a revolutionary video game console that does everything. You’re underestimating the Pikmin franchise.

  • Guest

You’re garbage. Who cares about you?

  • Cadrion

I care quite a bit, actually.
