32GB white Wii U & other accessories headed to Japan

Nintendo has announced a new 32GB white Wii U and other accessories for release in Japan.

wii-u-white

For dedicated Nintendo fans, one of the deciding factors that determined which color Wii U they purchased was the available accessories. At the time of release, the white Wii U only offered 8GB of storage, while the black deluxe model offered 32GB. That’s about to change in Japan, as Nintendo will be releasing a 32GB white model for those who want the extra storage space without the black veneer. This comes after Nintendo acknowledged that releasing the smaller 8GB Wii U was a mistake.

Other accessories being released in the region include a new fast charge device for the Wii Remote, and a new GamePad battery upgrade. The improved battery pack features a 2500mAh battery over the standard 1500mAh and will increase play time from five to eight hours. The price is set at ¥3,150, which is around $30. The pack will be released on July 25.

The last announcement is a set of quick charge items for the Wii Remote, including a battery pack, charging dock and a case and strap. This set will retail for ¥4,200 and will be available on July 13.

There has been no word on when any of these accessories will be available outside of Japan, but E3 seems a likely place to announce new bundles and accessories, so stay tuned.

Not bad news. Now bring it outside Japan and at a lower price point!

  • Jim Wanstall

250GB – 500GB is just around the corner , can see this happening

    • http://skoruppa.jogger.pl skoruppa

u think? WiiU have SSD memory. 150gb SSD drive is really expensive ;)

      • Cerus98

The Wii U doesn’t have an actual SSD (D stands for drive FYI) While flash memory and SSDs are pretty much the same there are differences. But there is no SSD to replace with something off a retail shelf. SSDs instead of flash memory would make the Wii U even more expensive.

        • Veries Seals

          Yessss indeed!

    • jay

Nintendo doesn’t use hard drives. If they did, The Wii U wouldn have launched with at least 120GB.

Flash memory is way more efficient and stable that hard drives which tent to crash. Flash and SSD are also way more expensive though. That’s why the Wii only came with 512MB. 32GB of flash is a crazy upgrade!

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Which is also why Microsoft only released 4GB XBOX360 that did not have a hard drive. If they put 16+ or even 8GB the cost would have not been much cheaper than the one with the 250GB hard drive.

  • angel

im good with my 32gb, i already have 1.5tb of external

  • juancamiloarq

I certainly need that battery upgrade.

  • Super Buu

I hope soon enough they’ll new Wii U models with bigger storage. I wouldn’t mind a 250 GB Wii U.

    • Cerus98

That would be pushing it considering the Wii U uses flash memory and the largest I’ve seen in any card, camcorder etc is about 100 and they’re extremely expensive. That much space would jump the price up big time unless they redesigned it to fit an internal HDD.

  • Clel
  • http://nintendopapercraftvideos.wordpress.com/ Sam

    That’s the right move.

  • Lusunup

They should of made them both 32 gb with a nintendo land copy I would of been so happy. White reminds me of nintendo, black reminds me of sony ; so i got the white one but i did not want 8gb of storage …

    • Adrian

N64 and gamecube were both originally black.

      • Andreas Sunde

And Playstation was originally white, afaik. Or, grayish. But still.

        • Adrian

SNES and NES were both some shade of gray too. All I know is white and Nintendo don’t have any special connection in my mind. But that is probably because I skipped the Wii console completely (I also skipped GC, but I at least played it a few times).

      • Denvy

I thought the Cube was purple.

        • Veries Seals

They had different colors. I had one of each.

          • Denvy

They did. I have a black one myself, but I believe the original color was purple, not black.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Purple was the original color. I have a silver, however, but a purple controller. The silver one died out. Course the console was used so I’m not surprised.

        • Adrian

Maybe, I could be wrong. But I know It wasn’t white ;).

          • Denvy

            Haha, definitely not white :)

      • jay

No, Gamecube was a sick ass purple:

        • Veries Seals

          lol

        • bizzy gie

Aaaaah. So that’s where the Xbox got its controller design. I see the slanted analogue sticks and red, yellow, and green colors.

  • Denvy

So will they phase out the mistake of a SKU, 8GB version? I’m a little interested in the larger battery though. A shame it wasn’t initial released. It would be nice for early adopters to get a discount, but don’t expect it. Just wishful thinking.

    • Cerus98

It’s just an accessory that was planned from the get go. The gamepad battery slot is way bigger than the current battery to easily accommodate much large capacities. Nyko has one ready to launch for like $15 but apparently got delayed until Nintendo released their own battery upgrade.

    • Veries Seals

Hopefully they will not. I hope they just make it a cheaper option. Maybe have it as a $149 to $199 unit. I have to buy another one for my daughters lol.

      • Denvy

With the Gamepad estimated at $170 that won’t be happening, imo. In reality, the Basic model just doesn’t sell. They’re on the shelves a plenty. In my area at least, I rarely see a Deluxe model lying around at say, Wal-mart or Target.

        • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

I’ve noticed this as well. My local Walmart has no deluxe consoles in stock, but the same three 8GB models have been there since November. Meanwhile, those 2 pikachu 3DS XL models on the shelf are tempting.

          • Denvy

It’s just not nearly as good a value as the Deluxe and people are realizing it. For 50 bucks you get 32GB, Nintendoland and the charge cradle and stand set. Not to mention the digital promotion. It’s a no brainer. If people are just strapped for cash, I would encourage them to just wait a little longer til you get that extra $50.

          • jay

Yeah I knew the Basic would be a problem as soon as it was announced.

2nd it gives trolls a reason to say “lol i see Wii U’s just sittin’ on the shelves”. Most the time they’re talking about the basic model.

          • Veries Seals

I totally understand Ashley. I live in a small town. It is the pits finding game products. I often have to travel to the next big city to get what i want. I had to drive 0ver 80 miles from home just to get the 8GB sku.

          • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Same here.. Two best buys I have been into recently by me had no deluxe models in stock and a few 8GB ones.

  • DemonRoach

Nintendo still screwing early adopters and it hasn’t even been a year.

    • Veries Seals

I really don’t understand the problem. I am an early adopter and I am glad to see that they are adding more to the unit, even though like I said I never had a storage issue with the unit. The external USB hard drive has been an option offered by Nintendo since jump street. I was also an early adopter of the XBOX360 and the PS3. Both sold for $400 and up with 20GB hard drives. I am I the only one that remember this? The XBOX360 max’s out at 250 GB that is not a lot of space.

    • H8ersBH8n

People had a choice between the 8GB and 32GB….it’s their own damn fault if they bought the 8GB, not Nintendo’s.

      • Veries Seals

No really. In my case, there was no 32 GB units in stock when I bought one. They were sold out all over the state. I called all over to find one but they were out of stock but had the 8GB units available. Demand was super high at that time. But I was cool with it because I knew about the external drive options and had one I could use. But it is not the end of the world like some are making it out to be.

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

How is this any different than any other product at launch where the more appealing model is sold out leaving the less appealing one?

To me color was not my deciding factor in the console but it is nice they are making an option for those that want a certain color. I also will not feel shafted if they released a 64GB model later at the same or lower price point because I will have all that extra time enjoying playing my Wii U that others didn’t. I already added a 1TB external so I am good on space for a while.

          • Veries Seals

I totally agree! I think they should continue to upgrade to add value over time. You and I used the same method to remedy our storage.

        • jay

Nintendo products hold their value. You can always sell it later and upgrade when you’re ready.

        • H8ersBH8n

Exactly. You can attach up to 1 terabyte of storage and people (mostly Wii U haters that don’t even have the system) are complaining about the small storage.

          • Veries Seals

actually you can attach up to 2TB’s of USB external hard drive :)

      • DemonRoach

Nintendo should of known that a game cannot fit on their shitty 8gb system.

        • H8ersBH8n

If you are talking downloads then, yes, but retail titles can fit on the 8GB.

        • bizzy gie

What about the Xbox’s 4gb system?

          • DemonRoach

What about? Its a system 7 years older that the Wii U.

          • bizzy gie

So? PS3 is equally as old and I can get a 500gb version.

    • jay

You wanna talk about screwing early adopters?

Launch PS3′s were bricked. Only to be replaced by non-backwards compatible models.

Almost no early xbox 360′s exist today. They have all gotten the red ring of death.

    • AJ Chioino

never had a storage issue with any console ive ever owned. wont have one with the wii u either. im a hard copy buyer. only digital games ill get is from VC which wont take up any memory at all.

  • http://www.facebook.com/MCRobins MC Robins

Meh I don’t even use the 32GB in mine, but I did get my deluxe for $286. So I can’t really complain.

    • R.D. Covenant

Man I got jyped! I ordered mine from ebay for $287 =(
All joking aside, I dont see any problem with storage, especially since I ordered a 2tb external for under $70.

      • Veries Seals

Now that is a great deal!

      • http://www.facebook.com/MCRobins MC Robins

Just a heads up everyone Staples Price matches Amazon ;)

      • Joe Crook

2tb should last the life of the console. A great way to “future proof” your Wii-U. Well, storage-wise anyways. A big external hdd is a must as 32gb, let alone 8gb goes real fast. Not complaining though, Nintendo was able to keep the price of the system down by designing it this way. Not too keen on another $400-$500 system to be honest (This means YOU MS and Sony).

  • Adrian

Increase the gamepad battery duration by 5 to 8 hours? Or increase the gamepad battery duration from 5 hours to 8 hours? Because my gamepad (even on Netflix) only lasts about 3.5 hours. 4 if I’m lucky. Who gets 5 hours out of it?

    • Veries Seals

Try some of the options by Nyko. They have some newer batteries that will extend your battery life now.

      • Cerus98

The battery replacement isn’t out yet. But it will extend it to up to 10 hours.

    • Cerus98

Those who turn the brightness down.

  • Archiq09

cool :D and for memory you can put a pc memory on wiiu if memory card has a USB outlet ;)

    • Veries Seals

You know I actually thought about that as an option too. I wonder if it will work?

      • Joe Crook

If you’re asking if you can use an external usb HDD on the Wii-U to expand your storage, then yes. I have a 500gb one hooked up to mine, and I store my games on it. They are so cheap and prevalent these days, I recommend it highly.

        • Veries Seals

Thanks, but no, we were talking about the possibility of an external memory bay to upgrade actual system memory. I have a 1 TB drive hooked in to my Wii U.

    • Cerus98

You can use external USB hard drives on the Wii U. They aren’t called memory though.

  • Veries Seals

I love my U. Looks like quality to me

    • Shaise Mughal

Yeah! I’m looking at mine right now!

      • gamesplayswill

        I’m looking at mine…

        • Shaise Mughal

Yeah! Its so smooth, shiny, now you go on and enjoy it!

          • gamesplayswill

            Aww, thanks Shaise!

        • DemonRoach

^Someone just found out that p0rn works with the gamepad.

          • gamesplayswill

            YES!!! YES!!!!…. YEEEES!!!!!!!

        • Veries Seals

lol, i thought i was the only one that looked at mine like that! :p

  • Veries Seals

Someone will have to prove to me that the U is not ready for battle. I stand behind Nintendo! I took a quick off screen shot for those who is in doubt. Need for Speed Most Wanted U in realtime.

    • jay

I heard someone say the Wii U is underpowered.

      *facepalm*

People wanna compare the Wii U to consoles that aren’t even on market yet. Not giving a single chance to what the Wii U is putting out TODAY!!

      • Veries Seals

true Jay, but thats ok. we know the truth, and if i have to start posting my own screen shots to show them what the Wii U is working with then I will. I hate when some one quotes me an article that they have read. tell me what you know for a fact. NOt what someone else told you. you are absolutely correct jay!

    • Shaise Mughal

That certainly looks capable of competing with the next gen! In my opinion some 3rd party devs are like planning a conspiracy, Ubisoft games looked great! Shinen games do, frozenbyte game do. And 1st party games too ( Sega has been good to us to)

    • Guest No. 3

*** That game is gorgeous!! It’s hard for me to resist buying it now that I’ve seen that picture.

    • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

You sure that is WiiU and Not Playstation 3? It’s displayed on a Sony television xD
Nah just kidding I found it funny the awesome screenshot from TV of a game on the WiiU which definitely is superior to PS360 version (as it should) and being displayed on a Sony televison haha
excellent screenshot sir, really high quality screenshot I’m impressed.

      • Veries Seals

Yep. I even took the picture with my sony camera. I am not anti sony. but My Wii U rocks my sony TV. Thank you, lol.

      • ps4ultimania

… i have a sony tv sonyies geart but i having wiiu works beautiful on the tv

        • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Sony tv and nintendo consoles seem to go well together indeed funny story which happened to me on both ps and ps2 playing games on a Sony tv, somehow when switching 60hz on on these consoles displayed it black and white while N64 and gamecube played 60hz on that tv worked perfectly, it still baffles me how that was possible, using Samsung tv now though (the Sony tv still works and is placed in the bedroom nowadays)

    • http://waluigi.com/ Waluigi

      • Nintedward

        lol

  • Megajon

Anyone knows if Japanese accessories can be used on NA wii u? Cos if it is…well… U could buy an imported product!

    • Shaise Mughal

I dont think so, it’d be region locked, once someone imported a gamepad from Japan because they’re sold seperately there, and tried it on their North American Wii U and it didnt work

  • Veries Seals

Next example that the Wii U has software. Darksiders 2. I love this game! Hey and for those who say the Wii U don’t have games nor 3rd Party Support, I got 28 more games in my library that I own where that came from! by the way, this is one of my e-shop downloaded games running from my hard drive. Runs fantastic. If I remember right the game is about 10GB is size.

  • H8ersBH8n

I feel like they are gonna come out with a limited edition 32GB green Wii U for the “Year of Luigi”.

  • http://wiiudaily.com/ Monomon

Sigh… 32 GB White Wii U…I have the Black one…I would like to trade it for…like now!(of course I need to transfer data, which may come out in the future.)

  • A SNES Day Off

The battery upgrade was almost a given from Day 1 (particularly as the instruction manual outlines this process)…

…but I would be very surprised if they released only 32GB models in both colour schemes. One of the original strategies for profiting on the Wii U was to justify a higher RRP for the 32GB model with cheap accessories and a storage upgrade. Perhaps Nintendo now realise that they’re actually saving very little money with the 8GB chips.

In all honesty, I would love to see the 32GB model as the baseline and a 128GB version as the new ‘Deluxe’. Include all the original accessories and chuck in the new battery for the GamePad. If they could do that for £299, it would sell like hot cakes in a white model.

Also, bring some cloud services to the Wii U/3DS.

  • ItzameyaToad

I don’t really think Nintendo made a mistake with the 8gb version. I think it is always good having 2 distinct models of a product, one for more casual people who are fine with 4gb of memory and only play a few games, and one for the more core/hardcore gamers who need more memory so they get the 32gb deluxe version. I think Nintendo also did an awesome job allowing people to use external memory SD card, external harddrive etc. cause it allows more freedom of the customer. I can spend an extra $60 on Amazon and get a 500gb hard-drive or $100 more and get a 1 terabyte external hardrive something Microsoft has always restricted with there consoles.

    • Guest No. 3

The only problem being the Deluxe set is the one selling. :

      • ItzameyaToad

Well the deluxe is yes selling much more than the standerd 8gb version there are still those who are buying the cheaper 8gb version. It’s one of those thing’s where Nintendo knew alot of people would buy the Deluxe version but I also think they thought the standerd version would sell alot too and appeal to people who wanted an entry level console.

        • Guest No. 3

If that was the case they shouldn’t have made as many white versions as they did. :

          • ItzameyaToad

Again I think they thought it would sell better than it has.

          • Guest No. 3

Of course they thought that. But I still feel that it was a mistake to release as many white ones as they did. I mean, the white one paled in comparison to the Deluxe, and I wanted the white one! XD

    • Agent721

The black set was sold out at Christmas, the white one did not. Nintendo missed out on quite a few sales by overestimating demand on the white one, but underestimating demand on the black. Many of those sales (parents) wont come back until this xmas or the kids bday, if at all. I think its wise to have a choice, but they shouldve known that the early adopters & xmas crowd would overwhelmingly prefer the black set.

  • Madmagican

BRING THE BATTERY PACK OUT OF JAPAN!!
…I’m getting a little tired of having to play Wii U with a wire attached to the wall for my gamepad

    • Game Master

You do that to, so do I.

  • Cerus98

Xbone also requires games to be installed, I think the PS4 does too so of course they will have a model with large amounts of storage.

  • Veries Seals

Does it really matter to be honest? XBOXone is currently stuck with that 500 GB hard drive. Your Wii U allows you to use external USB hard drives up to 2TB which is 4 times the storage of XBOXone. I have a 1 TB hooked into my Wii U and I have several games on the hard drive with no low storage issues insight anytime soon. I have a friend that has a 2 TB USB drive hooked into hers. We will probably never need another drive at least for a few years.

  • Cerus98

Xbone can use external drives as well just so ya know. But you are right that you’re stuck with the internal since not only is it proprietary again, you also can’t replace it. At least Xbox fanboys won’t have to fork over 5x the cash for a “special” MS hard drive.

  • Nintyfan

You could just use a 500 GB Toshiba hard drive on the Wii U.

  • Veries Seals

Why would I cuss you out? I never said no one should not buy another system. I own them all. I only cuss people out when they talk stupid to me. So far you have not done that, so I have no reason to do all of that. Yeah I am a Nintendo fan all the way, but I am also a gamer and enjoy all of the consoles. Plan to have all of the future ones. I am a gamer, my kids are gamers. My mom is even a gamer. I just understand that everyone wont necessarily buy all of the consoles and I want everyone to know that there are options. A hard drive my be the only thing that turns you off from the Wii U. So just letting you know that you do have some pretty high-end options for hard drives for the Wii U and you will still save money buying an external hard drive for your console if you have one or have not purchased yet. A lot of sites jump up and down on the Wii U for the 8GB unit, or the 32GB unit, but it is really not a problem because most people last GEN bought upgraded hard drives to there systems. I know I did as well. I have an 8GB white Wii U, but I have no problems with storage because i simply used one of my 1GB externals that I had lying around the house. So I did not have to buy a new one. But once I helped my friend buy hers, I recommended she gets an External hard drive right off and she has a black 32GB unit. She purchased a 2 TB hard drive for only an additional $119 from wal-mart. Now she has twice the storage as I do and is very happy. Just letting you know that all of the consoles have options when it comes to storage and the Wii U actually have less of a problem because of the up to 2TB USB storage option.

  • Cerus98

Wtf are you talking about troll? We speak English here.

  • Veries Seals

Yes! See. No storage issues at all to be honest. Thanks Nintyfan.

  • Veries Seals

Why fix what is not broken? Nothing wrong with the CPU nor GPU. The Wii U is powerful and has wonderful graphics. Not being smart, but have you invested in the console yet?

  • bizzy gie

You don’t make very much (or any for that matter) sense at all.

    Here’s a short message: LEAVE.

  • Veries Seals

I take that as a no, but it is cool. i encourage you to get one, it is totally not what you may think of it. It is very high tech and very unique. There is over 60 games out for it and they run very smoothly. The game pad is big but oh so comfortable in your hands. Its really amazing! Do not go on anything you have read. clear your mind and buy one. I am sure you will be pleased.
