Video: New Pikmin 3 story and gameplay details emerge

For those of you excited about the content of today’s Nintendo Direct, plenty of information about the upcoming Pikmin 3 game was released. Instead of one character, players will be commanding three characters, called Alph, Charlie, and Brittany. These aliens have crash landed on the planet after leaving to try and find a new food source. Once they discover the Pikmin, they begin using them to find food and bring it back to their spaceship. The food is extracted into juice, which you can use to fuel your days.

Each day is explorable from dawn until dusk and you can multi-task with each character, so you can give control of one group of Pikmin to one character and then perform tasks with all three. This helps speed up collection times so you can explore more. In addition, each day is replayable, so if you didn’t like how one day progressed, you can go back and do it again.

The GamePad is also an integral to play, as it acts as an overworld map and shows where you have explored and where you should go next. The pad is called the KopPad in the game and allows supreme control of your Pikmin. Other control methods include the Wii U Pro controller and Wii-remotes. You can even use your Wii-remote to play the game, while you use the GamePad as a monitor if you so choose. The game is set for an August 4th release date.

Iwata didn’t release any more details on the challenge and multiplayer modes, but we expect to see more of that at E3. Are you excited about these details? Let us know in the comments below!

Happy with todays mini wiiu Direct. Pikmin 3 will be mine soon as will W101.

You have to understand this direct was to give us a few release dates and that’s it.
threw in that Nice exclusive Sonic game coming to wiiu and Mario and Sonic for Wiiu.

Cannot wait for the big direct during E3.

    • GreenMarine

I was pumped for W101, but after reading that the game itself may be short, I’m having second thoughts. Is it still going to be a must buy?

      • Billy_Perry

Yeah definitely. Size of a game and quality of a game are not the same thing. Many people considered Skyrim to always be good just because of its size. But in many cases, I like small high quality games. For example, Bioshock Infinite took me 8 hours to complete, but it is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Hope this helped. :)

        • GreenMarine

It did, and I agree. Just so many good games coming out, and I can only throw so much cash at them!

          • Billy_Perry

With limited amounts of cash, I’m choosing to spend most of my money on as many AAA 3rd party Wii U games as I can. Obviously, I have to have those 1st party titles such as Pikmin 3, but I feel, as a fan, I need to help Nintendo make AAA 3rd party games profitable on their console. So I’m getting games such as Watch Dogs on Wii U, when I could just torrent it on PC. If I where you, I would prioritise other games over the Wonderful 101, but then again, I wasn’t that pumped for it in the first place.

  • djvalbnc

They kept pretty much everything for the next Directs around E3. I didn’t expect anything else today.

      Expect me Waluigi!!!

I love that they not only gave details and showed game play but they also gave us a release date!!! awesome. At least one great game ever month this summer.

After playing the Pikmin mini game on Nintendo Land I went out and got Pikmin 1 and 2 for Wii and played through all of 1 already. I never played a game in this series but the Pikmin mini game on Nintendo Land was fun and it exposed me to a new game. Looking forward to Pikmin 3. I am looking forward to maybe having online multiplayer and even local multiplayer.

    • Nintedward

Pikmin Adventure is by far my favorite Nintendo land attraction ^_^ . It’s awesome. Love the bullet and firework pikmin powerups.

I’m in doubt about this one. It seems really kiddy but I’ve heard good things about the previous parts.

    • Metal_Man_v2

If the previous games are any indicator, this is far from a kiddy game. Explosives, a giant worm-like queen that squishes her spawn to death as she rolls over them, spiders with lasers and machine guns, etc. Unless you think lush, natural environments make a game kiddy, I don’t really see the big deal here.

      • discuss

I’m not worried about the graphics. I’m worried that it will be to eazy like the kid graphics would suggest.

        • http://www.facebook.com/benjamin.moberly Benjamin Moberly

Easy? EASY? If you throw this game at a kid they will give up within 20 minutes. The series is merciless and is at times completely evil to the player. (Dropping bomb rock spiders. Whyyy!)

        • Cerus98

Learn to not judge a game by its looks/graphics. Just because hollywood is obsessed with everything being “darker and grittier” for grown ups doesn’t mean that beautifully colorful game worlds are for kids.

          • discuss

Usually kiddy games also look kiddy …. :)

        • Metal_Man_v2

It’s definitely not easy, even for experienced players. There are a multitude of enemies that require different approaches to beat, then you factor in your environmental hazards, along with whatever other enemies are also hostile, and you have a challenging game. It’s not rage inducing, (most of the time) but there are some frustrating parts. The water wraiths from Pikmin 2 immediately come to my mind. Nothing like having a stream of pikmin following you, only to have an invincible creature drop out of nowhere, and bulldoze your entire army, resulting in an immediate game over…

  • http://people.ign.com/returnofthetruth2 ReturnoftheTruth2

We’ll see what this does for the Nintendo crowd, but stupid Japanese characters and games have been played out for quite some time now.

    • The Clockwork Being

Looks like you didnt manage to beat the game in the due time, well too bad? Pikmin 1 and 2 too hard for you?

    • jay

Why are you in the “BABY GEAMEZ” section again?

      “stupid Japanese…”

You closed minded piece of shit. I hope a Yakuza snaps your neck bitch!

  • Metal_Man_v2

Hell yeah! Graphics look great, and being able to use the gamepod as a screen and play with the wiimote and nunchuck? THAT is innovation. This is the game I bought a Wii U for! But I’m confused on something, in what regions is it coming out on July 26th? I thought they pushed it back from this summer to August. Did they push it forward?

    • Cerus98

July 26 is for EU. Aug 4th has always been for the US.

      • Metal_Man_v2

Thanks, that’s what I had figured. Too good to be true… still waiting.

  • http://www.facebook.com/benjamin.moberly Benjamin Moberly

I have been waiting for this game for so long. It looks absolutely amazing. Want. Want. Want.

  • http://4812cpvideos.webs.com/ Zack4812

What happened to the 4th captain?

  • Dominic Coradazzi

I’m so glad we got to hear some stuff from Pikmin 3

  • MujuraNoKamen

Looking good, can’t wait for this game – and hell have we been kept waiting! – Good to see some cool new features shown in this vid like the controls, map etc as well as the story and character details too. Graphics are looking nice but being a Wii port I’m still seeing some flat textures. Come on Pikmin needs cool graphics, sort these out and perfect this masterpiece! If this lives up to the other Pikmin games (it surely will) then I can’t wait for Pikmin 4!!! – with real next-gen graphics and hopefully more varied landscapes, sorry to end on a negative note but all we’re seeing is the familiar garden and snow-scapes with a few water areas, can we get a Pikmin game with a huge world with all these areas and new ones like, Plains, Desert, rocky terrain, jungle etc it might sound a bit generic but so keeping the same garden setting for 10 years. This game will rock but there’s more to come from Pikmin yet!

    • Trevin

This will probably be their last pikmin game since one excuse for this being an anticipated game is because it’s been years since the last pikmin so pikmin 4 would make the series seem pretty rehashed.

      • MujuraNoKamen

I don’t know, 3 games over 12 years/4 games over 14 years doesn’t seems like that much of a rehash. and providing Pikmin 3 does as well critically as the others then Nintendo will probably see it has a future.
True so much of Pikmin 3’s hype is because we’ve been kept waiting so long (it was first confirmed in 2008) but that doesn’t really make a new game any less likely :)

  • RonnieMexico

dis gam3 lookz lik3 garbag3 mi pit bullz puked

    Pikmin 1: 1 captain Pikmin 2: 2 captain’s Pikmin 3: 3 captain’s…….i’m still buying the game day 1 but I feel they could’ve done more than that.

  • HP

Wow, the story turned out to be a better premise than I thought it’d be. Really looking forward to Pikmin 3.

Also, is it just me, or did Iwata talk slower than usual?

  • Shaise Mughal

In Europe its coming out in July 26! We’re getting things before North America!

  • Michael Jurado

for everyone doubting pikmin just remember one thing, this franchise made it into a super smash brothers game, therefore you know it’s bad ass
