Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaign has started

Shadow of the Eternals has been announced for the Wii U, with the crowdfunding campaign starting today.

Over the weekend we got a ton of excited emails telling us about Shadow of the Eternals, a new game that’s supposed to be a spiritual sequel to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. The game is slated for release on Wii U and PC and is currently undergoing a crowd-funding campaign of its own in order to be successful. As of the time of writing, the game has received $20k in support, which is 1.34% of the 1.5 million the team at Precursor Games seeks in order to make the game.

As it stands, the concept for the game spans over 2500 years of human history as players progress through the psychological horror game. The pilot episode is scheduled to be released in Q2 of 2014, with further episodic content released after that. The minimum to contribute in order to receive the first episode is $5, with the $25 tier giving you episodes 1-6.

The crowdfunding campaign is being set up with numerous opportunities for the community to contribute to the on-going development of the game, so if you’re interested in checking that out, definitely do so. Precursor Games CEO Paul Caporicci says his studio plans to put its all into Shadow of the Eternals:

“Precursor Games intends to leave no stone unturned in order to create an unparalleled experience for gamers. We have a talented team, incredible technology with CryENGINE and a new business model where we directly integrate the fan base into the development process, allowing for new possibilities and game direction. We are very excited to see where this new direction leads.”

        Yeah that is a long time, but it’s also good to see the game can look like this already and there is still a year and a half of development let. I will be keeping this one on my radar for sure.

          Hopefully it’ll be scary, unlike RE 5+6. I mean seriously The first three Resident Evil games was more scarier than those action based QTE story heavy disappointments

            I played Resident Evil 6 at E3 last year and knew it was going to be a failure after walking away from that fifteen minute demo. Worst time I spent with any game at the show.

    Shut up and take $50 worth of £’s !

    The gameplay looked incredible (for early footage more than a year from completion) and it was running on Wiiu! hence the A’s and Y’s and what not.

    I think I’ll be supporting this game too, just because I enjoyed Eternal Darkness so much on my GameCube. That game was incredibly ground breaking back at the time.

      Dull graphics, mediocre story, boring combat, mediocre puzzles. The only thing that was new was the camera effects (the bluescreen was funny). Why would you say this game was ” incredibly ground breaking”?

        No critics nor anyone who played the game would agree with you. It was critically acclaimed based on what it was trying to do. It was a psychological action adventure game. The primary focus is on exploration and deduction and mind games. It did those things very well. The graphics were supposed to be flat, it’s called an art direction.

          No one who ever played the game would agree with me? I played the game and I agree with myself. What kind of a silly argument is this anyway? Eternal darkness didn’t sell well for a reason.

          If the sanity bar is empty you will see random effects. This makes it very predictable. It’s also very easy to understand that if your head suddainly explodes or if the walls start to bleed that it’s a “fake reality”. Can you really call this a mind game?

          The first 10 times it was cool after that it just became boring because there aren’t that many effects.

          Btw calling those graphics an art direction … just lol. not-wanting-to-spend-to-much-time-making-proper-graphics art direction.

            Eternal Darkness didn’t sell well, but neither did the gamecube, and the sanity effects also affected menu options, not just gameplay, and could be quite jarring at times. The sales figures don’t affect whether the game is good or not, though they do tell a story about market penetration for a first game in a new genre.

            Your comment about the graphics is on the edge of trolling, “proper” graphics don’t exist, what the game looks like is what it looks like, and for the time, it looked good. DeusEx is another game with flat textures, and it has been critically acclaimed for its art direction as well as its gameplay.

        To be honest I found the story to be quite refreshing, but I suppose that’s subjective. What I found groundbreaking about the game was the way it played with your mind. Sometimes you didn’t know if what you were playing was real, or an illusion. I had not seen any game do it as well before.

    Tbh, their game looks awesome, played ED @ less then 7 years old and was so scared when I opened a door I closed my eyes xD + they look like a nice little group of developers. Normally I don’t support anything, but here is €5. :>

    I’m hesitant to support at this point. Early development looks good, given they’re using the CryEngine, but…we’ll just have to see.

      Not to mention the somewhat substansiated rumors that Nintendo EAD got involved with Eternal Darkness because the original build was supposedly a mess.

      If they plan to put it on PC, too – they can forget about Nintendo helping out this time.

        You do know they have the same guy who made Legacy of Kane and Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes which were very successful.

          Well, MGS: The twin snakes was a great update – but still followed a Blueprint of another game.

          Legacy of Kain, I loved the first one! Blood Omen is still one of my favorite games. I own it twice on playstation, once in English and once in German.

          The weapon descriptions in German are just… awesome…

          I’d go as far as to say this is the best game SK made.

          However, the series took a dive from there (the games not made by SK) – Soul reaver, while good, was just not the sequel I hoped for. Soul reaver 2 was a big improvement on SR1 in my opinion – but Blood Omen 2 was a buggy mess (a buggy mess that was fun to play, but still…) and Defiance was very generic.

          I really should replay them all one of these days…

    For anyone that didn’t notice, the 9min demo is running on a Wii U, based on the context control popups.

      The Wiiu is obviously the lead platform. First they will build the game for Wiiu , leveraging the consoles capabilities. Then they will port it to PC and Maybe up the framerate , resolution , textures , etc unless they are already high enough ;).

      Take Tomb raider for example (and 95% of multiplats) the 360 was Lead development platform. Once they finished the 360 version , they ported it to PS3 and PC.

    Eternal Darkness is one of those games I wish I never bought. It also sold poorly. I really don’t get why people hype this game.

    Why you no MONSTER HUNTER Online? it would be fantastic to see it on wiiu than the ported version of what is called “Ultimate” its kinda bizarre seeing it only on the PC :(

    I hope they get a second shot as this. Eternal Darkness was a little clunky and with a bit more polish could have been a great game. Eternal Darkness is not as good as you remember unfortunately.

    Of any game throughout the years, this is the one I’ve thirsted for. I’ve just purchased a used copy of part one online and a gamcube from a local shop here in Vegas just to get myself ready. ÜBER PSYCHED. No other game was more of a mental mind fuck than this one and in ten years with expanded graphics, has not been matched.

    If funding is a problem then Nintendo should frow their money into this project and get rights to publish the game just like with BAYONETTA 2.

    I hate that they are gonna make this game multiplatform. Most of the people who are gonna support this on kickstarter will be nintendo fans. The nintendo version will be neglected yet again.
