Activision wants the Wii U to be successful

Activision says its waiting for the right opportunity to continue to support Nintendo and the Wii U.

Activision Wii U

Third party support for the Wii U has been lackluster aside from Ubisoft and Warner Bros. Interactive, but Activision has stepped up to say that it wants the Wii U to be a success for Nintendo. Eric Hirshberg has stated that Activision is watching its opportunities carefully and if they believe they will pay off, then Activision will commit to the Wii U.

“We were there with a lot support for the Wii U at launch with a Call of Duty game, with a Skylanders game and with several other titles. We want to see Nintendo be successful and we want to do anything we can to help them be successful. Obviously the Wii U is struggling – that’s not a secret, I don’t think there’s any other way to read the narrative right now – but they’re a really good company and they’ve got some incredible IP that has yet to come, that they honed for that platform. We have a vested interest in making them successful.”

This comes just a day after EA saying almost the same thing, that it’s carefully monitoring its opportunities with Nintendo and the Wii U. Activision and EA are the two biggest publishing houses in the games industry, so the fact that these two companies are sitting on their laurels waiting for Nintendo to improve the Wii U’s current direction with first party games means Nintendo needs fresh releases now more than ever.

Hypocrites. They are the ones who have made their hearts a prison.

  • Bob Charlie

So basically, Activision and EA are just going to sit back, watch, wait, and do nothing until Nintendo and other third parties do the work to get Wii U sales up.
    “With friends like these…”

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Then release their games months after they were released for other consoles without all the features and no access to future DLC and then cry on how their games do not sell well on Nintendo. You know because releasing the game later than other platforms and in a gimped format has nothing to do with that.

      • The Clockwork Being

And then complain about the low sells of their games on the console…

        • YayGs

Yeah, it’s like they think people only have one console so they expect everyone who has a Wii U to buy their ported game that’s already been available for some time.

          • Shawn Spitler

I’m not a hard core gamer (used to be once upon a time) and haven’t purchased a Nintendo console since the original NES. But when I played Rayman Legends I had to have the Wii U. Didn’t even know the Wii U was a separate console until I happened into the Gamestop and poked around on the Gamepad.

Rayman Legends was the reason I purchased Wii U last Christmas for my family. Is that really hard for developers to understand? Rayman was a misstep by Ubisoft.

September is my birthday, so I’ll be purchasing this amazing game for the Wii U, but unfortunately it won’t be pulling in a crowd towards the Wii U like it would have before. Can’t tell you how badly this pisses me off.

            Stupid, stupid Ubisoft.

          • Bob Charlie

Our stories sound almost identical! I heard about Legends at the exact same time lil’ Bob started dropping F-Bombs induced by my Battlefield 3 gaming and knew it was time to go get a Wii U. I happily traded in my 360 and got a Wii U, primarily because it’s f*ing Nintendo!!, but Legends was a big part of that decision.
Ironic really…The game that made me first consider buying a Wii U is a game I won’t be getting. (All the 1st parties on the way)

          • Shawn Spitler

I certainly have to ration my monies, buy PS3 died a couple months ago, so all I have is the amazing Wii U. Legends is still on my list. =]

    • NkoSekirei

at least we got ubisoft,monolith,namco/better bring some tales games or i will strangle u namco, square enix, and several others i cant think of at the moment.

      • Elem187

Monolithsoft is owned by Nintendo completely. They are just as much a Nintendo studio as EAD Tokyo, EAD Kyoto, Intelligent Systems, and Retro Studios are.

Nintendo just needs to purchase a few more studios and they will be set (Please pick up Next Level Games, all of their titles to date have been stellar)

    • Metal_Man_v2

Activision has been releasing games for the Wii U. I’d hardly call that doing nothing.

      • Bob Charlie

All they have done is port games over, just like EA did. (EA exception: NFSU)
I’ll begin to believe Activision’s statement when they start to develop games that are truly unique to the U.
Edit: They actually have one exclusive, a fishing game. You can get it new for $18.00…

        • mikel334u2

I don’t think Activision made unique games for ANY console; about all of their titles have been multi-plats. I wouldn’t say they’re as bad as EA since they are still releasing almost all of their multi-plats to Wii U and are releasing Wii U games the day they are released to other consoles. Now if Destiny is brought to Wii U, then it shows that Activision’s relationship with Nintendo is pretty healthy.

You all will see Nintendo succeeding.

    • Jared Garcia

so is ea and activision robin and superman? or is nintendo superman and he’s thanking batman for planning on support?

      • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

I think Nintendo is Batman, Superman is Sony and most likely Robin resembles Microsoft, that’s all I can make out of it :P

        • GG

Sweet, Batman can kick ass without any superpowers

    • Zombie Boy

If Superman keeps doing that then Batman will end up being played by Warwick Davis in the Justice League movie!

    • EASeniorEngineerFKAPachterJr

Sighs, why the fuck did i buy a Wii U..haha you got me robin.

  • Brian

hmmm… until they deliver on the same games as the 360, one, ps3, ps4, I don’t believe it.

  • MetroidZero

Waiting for opportunity? The opportunity is here! The console has been out for a while now…

    • Archiq09

they perhaps have expected the ps4 and xbox one for make a verdict.

      • Elem187

Yeah, if the xbone and ps4 bomb after the initial holiday sales, they can conclude that the video game industry is in a deep contraction, so they will support all systems just to try and bring in as much money as possible.

  • tooby77

dogs. dont sit back and wait. help market to grow instead put it in when u see it goes up

  • wiimenonowiiu

well if both these companies thinks i will play their games on the ps4 they are wrong

i will only play their games on my wii u, if they do not come to wii u well i will not play their games

the wii u opportunity has past and they know it with all these top games coming out mario, sonic, zelda , black flag, so many more who cares about your games on ps4 and idiot box

    • sdmac200600

As a gamer, why would you deprive yourself of games?

    • wiimenonowiiu

As a gamer i own almost evry system on the market from Atari to wii u with ps4 on pre order idiot box I’ve pick both up at garage sales just to add to my collection lol but when a game company refuses to make games on a system for just because and not support the system to me is reason not to play their games wii u has a great line up coming out

  • John Raybell

Yeah black ops which they didnt even support. NO DLCs

yay more craptastic ports, meh, until i see something new, not just a crappy port I dont care about third party support right now, nor should anyone else.

Think about it! should we be happy with ports of the lesser, or old ports from games that came out a year or so ago, nah, i will wait for the worth a shit games like first party until everyone can pull there heads out of there asses, goes for UBI as well!

        • Squirrel09

  • Streakin-Cobra

Im still waiting on DLC for COD

    • John Raybell

      SAME!!!!!!

  • sparko17

if they care release Deadpool game on Wii U :3

  • DragonSilths

Then bring your biggest gun to the fight. Destiny on Wii U. Most of the Bungie employees are fans of Nintendo. Plus that “My body is ready” text message in the first Destiny Vidoc. Destiny + Wii U = Awesome!!!

  • Michael Collins

We will do everything we can to help them, except for release new games and DLC for already existing games. Remind me to give Activision a call if I am ever on fire. I am assuming they can help me by throwing a little gasoline my way.

  • iceazeama

    Crappy milked series,

Only make a game every year

Dont care to be a good game

    • DragonSilths

Activision is a PUBLISHER they dont MAKE COD they only fund it. Which is smart business wise.

      • iceazeama

        just felt like saying it.

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

In a way I’m relieved to hear Activision say those words, would be better if they supported WiiU from the start and kept doing so. I kinda like Activision as a publisher often they publish pretty good games, EA is a different story, never been much of a fan of them anyway.

But I’ll buy good games from Activision on any platform I play, whether it’s Sony’s Playstation, Nintendo’s home consoles or handhelds or pc, I never had anything against Activision and will not likely turn against them either. As long as their games are good I’m set.

So this is almost good news, make it better by bringing some stuff to the WiiU instead of saying “we are watching you (-_(-_(-_-)_-)_-)!”

    • Thomas Vienna

Well, you can’t blame Activision for being watchful and hesitant, they’re a company too. You can’t just start publishing games on a system that’s in a danger zone; if it fails (this is from Activision’s Perspective, I do NOT think the Wii U will fail), or if the console doesn’t pick up in time for the new game’s release, the company loses a lot of money, and somebody is responsible.

      • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Yeah, that’s true indeed, can’t blame them for the choice they make now. Companies go where they can get money. I’m relieved by this statement of them. Don’t really miss EA and the only game I’ll get from them is a game I’ll choose as a reward, as posted in another article. But I would hate it to lose support from Activision on WiiU, so I also hope (and know) it’ll succeed. Then Activision comes back too perhaps. I really hope so :)

  • kenny Johnson

“Obviously the Wii U is struggling – that’s not a secret, I don’t think there’s any other way to read the narrative right now.” I still understand why this narrative is considered true? And everyone believes it (even Nintendo). But why?

    • NkoSekirei

dont forget ps4 and xboner will strugglle too just like the wii u has been going through

      • Andrew

        EXACTLY. I guarantee that.

      • Nothing5555

My coworker is big fan of the Xbox360 and was raving about the Xbone and when I asked him if he was going to buy it on release he said “No, I am not going to pay 499 for a console”. lol

As I said in one of my previous comments I believe upcoming consoles from Sony and Microsoft will not sell at most over 7 million units each over the course of next year due to the prices. That 400+ price point is a tough pill to swallow.

    • Andrew

yeah. I’m sure this entire console generation will have a VERY slow start. People just say it’s slow just because the Wii U “sucks”, but they just say that because the Wii U game out first.

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I think 3rd Party Developers realize that some top Nintendo Titles are coming soon and will most likely jump start system sales. Let’s hope the 3rd parties are doing the necessary work to make sure their game engines work on the Wii U.

That being said, 3rd party developers have to realize that if they release a game for a platform and skimp out features and extra content on that one platform their game will NOT sell well on that platform and they CANNOT blame the platform for their half-assed work.

  • Joey Perez

Just wai n see that the one n ps 4 will be slow sellers after the holiday as well

  • blindtiger

if you made good games people will continue to buy them even after the “install base” improves… the problem is that these companies do annual sequels that completely devalue their games after a few months

  • Joey Perez

    Hi

  • sdmac200600

Wow you really can’t say anything on this site that is not praising Nintendo……..I’m starting to understand why everybody sees Nintendo fans as jokes………..and now time for a crap load of comments and downvotes.

    • Alexander Kleinwechter

      Yeah! Downvotes for you!

    • Andrew

You came to a Wii U news site, what did you expect? I’m sure if I went to the xbox forums right now, I’d fine most of them supporting the xbox 360/xbox one. It’s just common sense.

      • sdmac200600

I would have assumed this site of all the others would actually have rational Nintendo fans. Clearly that is not the case……..

  • NkoSekirei

well Ea i dont give a rats @$$ about them after they screwed up by trying to force origin down our throats but didnt work out for them and instead they threw a wild tantrum like a kid cause they couldnt get their own way

  • RoyRelapse

Even though I’m much more of a Battlefield player, I hope they bring Ghosts to WiiU !

    • John Raybell

      Um they are, CONFIRMED :)

      • RoyRelapse

Nope, though on E3 they did “announce” it, they took this back a few days after and the spokesman who claimed this, told that he didn’t know what they are planning, get your facts together

        • FaTih

they said that it’s a secret and that they can’t tell something at this moment so “Stay tuned”

          • John Raybell

Yeah roy get your facts together!

They just couldn’t talk about the wiiu version is all.

          • RoyRelapse

No it’s not, “Last week Rubin suggested that there was a Nintendo Wii U version, however in a more recent follow-up he clarified his remark, suggesting that “I don’t even know the answer to that… I was trying to say in the interview I really don’t know and I’m not supposed to talk about it.” go read the article.

            well mother fuck lol.

Thanks for clearing that up, still not a for sure either way, guess we will have to wait and see

        • John Raybell

Go reread everything, its a confirm from acti with out a real confirm, its coming :)

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

I think there lies something behind the n ext gen, if ps4 and xbox one will fail they have support from nintendo, smart move from them.

  • MujuraNoKamen

Dickheads, they’ll support PS4 with an install base of 0 right now and XBone with an install base of 0 and a lot of hate towards it, but Wii U which outsold what 360 & PS3 did in the same amount of time “no we won’t put the effort in, we’ll wait for someone else to drive the user base up then cash in later on that”. Their support was good at first, I know BO2 came to Wii U a bit later than the other platforms but it was only a bit later, and of course it didn’t sell as well because A: Activision never advertised the Wii U version, B: it was a [slightly] late port, C: it was a console launch, rarely a big success but why would they expect that D: They haven’t supported BO2 with DLC – if a customer was interested in a Wii U with BO2, they’d do a minutes research and read “Wii U version doesn’t have the same content as the others” so he’ll get it on XBox or PS instead. if they’d do what they should do and support Wii U with DLC, people would buy their games because they no it’s the real deal. since then they’ve not released any big games (what happened to that new Crash Bandicoot you reported here a while ago?) if they did release a proper game now it would do well and Wii U sales would increase, everyone’s happy.

  • William Cole

That’s what I’m talking about. A company that not only presents the problem and recognizes the problem but also presents and recognizes a solution.

  • thedeciderU

hardware will sell this fall up to through the holidays. nintendo’s software release train starts soon all the way up through xmas. if these companies were smart, they’d have something in development to take a piece of that pie. i love nintendo games, but i love a console that has ANY good game more than just 1st party.

    • thedeciderU

these publishers, although i can understand on a level that they have to make money, are hurting the wiiu more than helping right now since they are not putting any games on it.

due to the lack of games coming from all over, it’s more like a bully kicking a classmate when he’s down. someone has to be the first to bring a good NEW game to wiiu and start the momentum. so who will it be? when will it be?

  • Krzysztof

If I don’t get COD Ghosts on my Wii U I’ll be well pissed off !!!

    • John Raybell

Its confirmed, all CODs will SEE ALL CONSOLES :)

      • ACE

        really that is good

  • Dez

Two of the biggest and the greediest publishers, period. When was the last time either released a worthwhile game? Besides, Activision has been talking about that new CoD for the Wii U for a while now. Activision might be greedy but at least they aren’t as stupid as EA. They’ll continue to release CoD on all platforms yearly just as they’ve always done. Honestly everyone is getting bent out of shape over nothing.

Besides would you rather Nintendo lose its integrity by catering to these greedy asshats or would you rather they remain the same and great memorable games while they gradually ramp up the user base; therefore, getting more support. Frankly developers are being lazy since from what we’ve seen of X alone, the Wii U has one hell of a GPU. Also notice the opinions of a someone actually developing a custom tailored Wii U game vs. someone try to make a quick buck. Sort of like that Dreamfall or whatever it was called in the other article, the graphics in that game really aren’t impressive, compare it to X and you realize how little that developer is actually putting into to utilizing the offerings of the hardware. Nintendo is always best at making use of their hardware and once those first party titles start coming out, you’ll quickly see all these publishers do a 180 and then sputter bullshit that they were supporting Nintendo the whole time. (Damn, two-faced assholes!)

  • Agent721

BO2 is a lot of fun on the wii u…I hope to see more, I love the ability to play with your bud on the couch via the tablet!

    • John Raybell

Yeah best thing about it, i own a nice pc with black ops, max it out no problems, but the wiiu has me and my brother playing it tons more, couch co-op makes it worth it. not the greatest selling point, but so far one of the better more logical ones, less of the gimmicks we see else where, not a game change, but fucking great none the less :)

  • david jarman

Give us ghost and all dlc for it and black ops, and while you’re at it give us a remake of blackops 1 with all dlc included updated with off screenplay and build it from the ground up for wii u.

  • Agent721
  • John Raybell

I would really like the DLC for black ops2 for Wiiu, its really been pissing me and my brother off, among tons of other people, I want to play that game more, but the same maps over and over are getting fucking old, give me DLC and WE WILL FUCKING BUY IT ASSHOLES!!!!!

You promised our full COD experience on the WIIU, sooooo where the fuck is it???

And where the fuck are the class action law suit for this crap, I was sure they would have been sued for false advertisement, the back of the case alone says DLC so WTF DICK HEADS

    • platypusman

The full experience shouldn’t include you buying dlc, its a $60 game! You could by 11 subway sandwiches or 11 pizzas with that amount of money but then there’s another $60 you have to pay for dlc. at least 3 of the dlc packs should come with the game because there part of the game not an extra amount of it.

      • John Raybell

No the entire experience does include DLC.

The rest of the maps and modes etc etc are on DLC, if they don’t give us DLC we miss out on the rest of the product, less game, less content.

Full experience has DLC included, that is the full experience!

now days, the full game as been split up into DLCS also, so yeah those belong with the full product either as free and included or as purchase, regardless the $60 game isn’t the full black ops 2 experience if your missing out on a ton of content everyone else gets. Full experience would be you experiencing all there is to experience for call of duty black ops.

        Don’t be a moron

  • Nolan ArchLord

They’re really helping out with games like “Fast and the Furious 6″. Thanks, Activision!

  • old_skool

Two reasons why third party support and Nintendo just don’t get along.
1: Nintendo development kits notoriously lock out Devs from accessing ALL the power under the hood. Its just Nintendo’s way of staying ahead of the game.
2: Third parties simply cannot compete with the quality of Nintendo’s first party releases. Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom etc are on par with Sony and Microsoft’s first party fair, but a million miles away from Nintendo’s AAA releases.

  • ACE

I don’t care EA excep for FIFA
    but Activision is very important

  • MHeinz

i honestly dont believe in this. i think activision and ea r just saying this so that they dont seem like the bad guys. if they really did want the wii u to succeed, they would should their support now to help boost wii u sales…

  • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

Well, at least ACTIVISION is launching COD Ghost on the Wii U, but EA…..

  • Metal_Man_v2

“This comes just a day after EA saying almost the same thing”

I don’t think this is anything like what EA just said about the Wii U. EA said they currently have no plans for developing for the Wii U, but are watching it to see how things play out.

That’s fine and all, but Activision obviously already has an established level of trust for the Wii U. The realize that the Wii U is scraping by, but they also have several games coming for the console like CoD Ghosts, which I plan to pick up the Wii U version of this time around, and the new Skylanders. Activision even threw in a compliment towards Nintendo’s first party games.

  • Ducked

Here’s an idea, confirm COD Ghosts for Wii U

  • leafsfan73

1st year install base bor xbone and ps4 isn’t going to be much larger so I don’t know what they’re expecting.

  • Antar Rodríguez

ok we dont need 3rd parties saying that they´ll just wait for wii u to be succesful, Call of duty is a game with no support from devs and that has happened even in the previous console, i dont know why people dont understand, they are not planning on heavily supporting this console, i hope they dont release ghosts for wii u i can even bet it would be the same story all over again

  • bradtastic2

Why don’t they support it now and help them become successful? I love deadpool and would have loved to play it on wii u. And COD g host.

  • Inzanoflex

activision if you want to see the wii u success, first make sure we get all the dlc on black ops 2 wii u, and trust me, thats is a good start for now.

  • edge

The problem with this strategy is that it if you leave the job of providing software all to Nintendo, then the only people who will buy the hardware are Nintendo fans. This will be a difficult cycle to break out of. Nintendo fans are known for not buying third party games on Nintendo systems. Third parties in turn, are not jumping headfirst into supplying software for Nintendo systems. Nintendo admits that it isn’t good at (or interested in) making the same kinds of games that third parties make. So that leaves the only people buying Nintendo hardware are only interested in buying Nintendo software. And on and on it goes. It’s going to make a major shift in thinking by either Nintendo or third parties to break this cycle.

  • Jeremy Jerm King

If Activision really wants Nintendo to be successful then they can start by putting dlc in Black ops 2 for Wii u

  • CaveGiant

So after Nintendo releases their sure-to-sell games like Mario Kart 8 and such, and consoles sell, they will step in and collect. I guess that’s business.

  • Extra Vinegary

I can do without EA and Activision games on my Wii U. I don’t play any of their games on any other system. Only EA game I’m interested in is Mirror’s Edge 2.

  • Martijn Plasmans

Nintendo is responsible for creating a climate where 3rd party developers are wiling to bring their games to the platform. They did it right in 1st instance, because there where a lot of games during launch. After that the pace and numbers of quality games slowed down dramaticly, no big Nintendo titles what caused no big numbers of Wii U’s being sold.

3rd party wants to know if the investment of creating a game for Wii U will make them money. The numbers they sold with games like Black Ops 2 or Fifa 13 didnt make them much money.

  • HypoceitesRROD

Nintendo will win the console war. Again.

  • ChiwawaBoi

    activision….I ♥ U

  • Phillip Fauble

    Good games sell consoles
Console sales lead to game production.

One of these has to happen first. No one is going to buy a console with no games. Hey Activision, why don’t you help Wii U succeed by supporting it?

I’m still not caring about EA’s support..

Activision will continue to put Call of Duty and Skylanders on the system no matter what…. They sold 200k copies of COD on the Wii U, they only needed to sell 20-30k to break even, so they did that by a factor of 10…

they made at least 5 million on the transaction. Its not the 200 million seen on other platforms, but I really don’t see any company leaving 5 million on the table no matter how big they are. Ghosts will be on the Wii U.

EA I can understand why they have cold feet, I’m not sure they broke even on any of the games they put on the Wii U.

Activison has a butt load of money. It would’ve been cool if they just took a chance and developed a new game exclusive game for the console. I mean really put some muscle behind it, the Wii U hasn’t even begun to be tapped. I’m sure Activision if they really wanted to could really help with the sells.
