Aonuma says Zelda Wii U will feature unexpected elements

zelda-wii-u

As we get closer to E3, developers are crawling out of the woodwork to tease us with their upcoming creations. According to Eiji Aonuma, the producer for the Legend of Zelda series, the next Legend of Zelda entry on the Wii U will feature several unexpected elements. No specific information was disclosed about the title, but according to EDGE magazine, you should be on your toes for what’s coming:

“The new game (A Link To The Past 2) will play very differently to the original. I think the new additions will make players see the game in a different way. And, of course, we’ll introduce even more unexpected elements in the Zelda game that we’re making for Wii U.”

Since the anticipated release date for The Legend of Zelda Wii U is around 2015, we don’t expect to see anything beyond a teaser tech demo, if that at this year’s E3. The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD remake will likely take the spotlight for fans of Zelda games, but this teaser is certainly something to think about over the coming months.

I think to my knowledge all the Zelda games added new features like plot, art style or game machines but it’s still nice to hear it’s improving.

  • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

This is Zelda, no need to discuss about it: it will be awesome, the end.

    • DeedsGaming .

As a huge Zelda fan, I can honestly say that there’s a chance it will be bad. You may truthfully have the opinion of it never being bad, but in my opinion, that’s just you trying to get up’s on a Nintendo orientated site. There is no need to discuss about it, I agree, but there is also a chance it will be ruined, monopolised and corporate, I.E DLC. Now we wouldn’t want that would we, more money for us to shove into Ninty’s pockets, damn company :D

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

        I can’t see them doing that…

        • DeedsGaming .

Yes, neither can I, but there’s a chance. Better to be ready than naive.

      • AAAkabob

Nintendo does DLC right. A full SEPARATE Mario bros game “DLC” for $20 is great DLC to me.

      • Denvy

So far there has never been a “bad” Zelda game published by Nintendo. Even low points in the series are good. History is not giving us a reason to expect it to be bad.

        • DeedsGaming .

why are you quoting me like I said it was bad? Read it over again, blind fools.

          • Denvy

            Lol, whatever you say, boss.

      • Nintedward

Please feel free to name one bad main Zelda game (not including Four swords or CDi. Four swords was a spin off)

They’re all absolutely epic. And so will this one be , I would bet my life savings both Windwaker Remake and the next original Wiiu Zelda get above 90 on metacritic for example.

Skyward sword is one of my favorite games ever , top 5. So coming off the back of that should be nice and easy.

        • Fred

Wait, I liked BOTH four swords games(both the GBA one and the GameCube one)

          • Nintedward

4 swords was just great , no amazing or perfect like other Zelda games. Excellent if you had 4 people to play with.

          • Fred

I never got to play them with 4 people, but they were very fun with 2. People say they didn’t really like them, but I loved playing Zelda with my buddy (GBA) and my wife (Game Cube)

        • Tim van Broekhoven

          I didn’t like PH and ST…

          • Cameron

PH was okay, ST was easily the worst Zelda. Hopefully Zelda will see better handhelds this gen.

          • Potemkin

Zelda II has been the worst, followed by ST, PH, MM (I didn’t like the whole 3-day thing, I hated it!) and SS (it was so-so, didn’t really excite me in the least).

          • Eva Amore

Whether you like Majoras Mask or not it is a classic. When I was a kid if you could beat Majoras mask and, conquer all 3 days you were a legend. :p

          • Norfair20X5

Regardless of what ST is it still had some of the best music. Those pan flutes are so rad.

        • Ace

I agree. There are no Zelda games on handhelds or on consoles that haven’t done well or haven’t been rated well. The series has been SOLID from day 1. I am almost done with Skyward Sword it is FANTASTIC! I can’t wait to play WW HD. I hope they being out a special edition. That would be awesome!!

        • Clel

          Same with Super Mario.

          0 bad Zelda games
          0 bad Super Mario games

I mean sure, some people might not have liked any of them, but no one can say any of them were actually BAD.

          • Nintedward

            Yep!

        • DeedsGaming .

Sorry, but are you retarded? This is just getting annoying now. Most people on here speak nonsense, just trying to get ups. I said nothing about Zelda having a bad game, infact I said I was a huge fan. Don’t just read something that has a slightly alterered opinion, from all the blind internet geeks that get satisfaction from ups, and automatically think I’m bad mouthing LoZ. Once again, I AM A NINTENDO FAN. The internet everybody. And also, Four Swords isn’t a spin-off, it’s part of the LoZ series, it was the multiplayer portion of the ALttP cartridge.

          • Nintedward

Would you mind shutting the hell up ? thx…

You said there was a chance the next Zelda game could be bad , I said you’re wrong. There is basically no chance of it being bad , especially how every main Zelda game is a masterpiece.

No one cares about ”ups” Ive been on this site way before they implemented discuss into the comment section…

        • RockGod

The controls and story were amazing in Skyward Sword, I enjoyed the art style but think it would have been perfect with an art style more like that of Twilight Princess.
In the end though both excellent entries to the series, and I’m very much looking forward to Wind Waker HD and Zelda U.

        • greengecko007

Some of the Zelda titles haven’t aged well, but I think we can all agree that each game was well received in its time.

      • Cameron

Out of all the corporations I could see doing that, Nintendo would be among the last. Nintendo is a rare specimen in that they put the customer first. Nintendo has one of the least painful to deal with in terms of calling customer support, and actually listens to their fans about some things.

Now if EA, Activision, Capcom,or Micro$oft were making it, then I’d be worried.

      • bizzy gie

There’s nothing wrong with DLC as long as they’re creating new content for us to enjoy. It stretches out our 60 dollars. It’s only when they cut out parts of the game to save them for DLC when consumers have a problem.

    • Clel

And they all lived happily ever after!

  • BieberBlows

Every Zelda has a different element that seperates them from each other, and that’s why I love the series so much.

  • SH*TBLOCK

Man I can’t wait for this game. I know seeing Wind Waker in HD is gonna be great…BUT seeing a whole new Zelda game and finally showing off what the WiiU can really do, is gonna give any gamer a game-stiffy for sure, hahahaha…

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Gives me a “Skyward Sword” just thinking about it

      • Zeldatrek

You better not hold the thing Skyloft or you might get stuck by lightning!

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

That would be pretty epic though…

          • Zeldatrek

Agreed as long as you say these magic words “BY THE POWER OF CASTLE GREYSKULL!”

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I’ll just play a harp everytime I go skyward now

      • Elem187

I hope they keep the controls from Skyward, but give us a Twilight Princess art style.. DARK. GRITTY. REBOOT.
        Thats the perfect Zelda.

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

eh… dont count on the same controls. Remember? Gamepad. Unless it comes with a belt attatchment and you take it out whenever you wanna use an item :D

          • Magnus Eriksson

Could use both wiimote (swordplay, walking) and gamepad (maps, inventory, controlling the flying bug, drawing magical spells or the like). I think that would be great. Or, actually I think it will be great no matter what N. decides to do. :)

          • Andreas Sunde

I’m hoping for gamepad controls, maybe with wiimote swordfighting and flying (which works fantastically in Skyward Sword). I’m currently playing through it for the first time ever, and I have one single complaint. The camera is complete and utter shit. It really needs twin sticks.

          • Andreas Sunde

Also, the option to choose right or left hand.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Great game. Loved it. I think the biggest problem was the recalibrating. Had to do that all the time. Good thing the recalibration feature was put very handy so it could be done quickly.

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I like the dark style art Zelda like they did in Twilight Princess. I found that I got into the game more because of it. I think Twilight Princess is my second Favorite Zelda game next to Link to the past and that has a lot to do with it.

I know the demo is not supposed to be an indication on the graphical art style of the upcoming Zelda but if they go that route it will make me very happy.

I have already warned my wife that the main TV where the game consoles are hooked up to will become solely mine when the new Zelda comes out.

          • Magnus Eriksson

I think I like TP the most. Me too loved the dark style. Hope N turns back to this at a time. Playing Darksiders 2 now, so I actually get a picture of how I think a ideal dark Zelda game should look like :)

        • DekuMask

The only thing a didn’t like about Twilight Princess was that it is way to brown and just plan dark at times, it wasn’t colorful enough. i guess i just don’t like a lot of dark colors in games.

    • Billy_Perry

I really want to see DLC in the new Zelda because I know that Nintendo would do it right. When done right DLC can really have you coming back to a game that you have completed time and time again, it really extends the life of the game.

Imagine in a Zelda game, if Nintendo released expansions such as new dungeons, or side quests that supplement the backstory to the main overall narrative in the game. I would love that, and I would definitely get all the DLC packages that came out for it.

      • ancientgamer

zelda has no need for dlc in my opinion, why you ask? because they already put alot of this stuff into the main game itself, dlc now days is stuff that should already be in the game, but devs keep it out to make extra money off it, now an expansion pack thats somewhat a different story, if they added like 6 dungeons n some more side quest id def pick it up

        • Link

But as he said… If done right it will be like a sequel rather then something that should have already been in the game. Think of it as an “Expansion Pack” from something like world of warcraft. You buy the game then a month, year, or week later new dungeons, kingdoms, (ect.). it could hold zelda fans on for 5 years if they wanted too. im hoping for a game that links games to each other…

          • Magnus Eriksson

Like Majoras mask to OoT? Hmmmm… maybe.

        • CapnCrumbles436

What ‘should already be in the game’ is highly subjective. If Nintendo creates a Zelda that packs in 40+ hours of game play, and then they go back in and add extra content for extended playability, I am not going to be the guy sitting here complaining….

          • Michael Legault

well look at super luigi u, i think they said they made a whole set of levels 80 or so, some with short timers, and sold as either dlc or a stand alone disc. nearly doubling a game’s content is how dlc should be :P

          • Linksawakeningisazeldagame

I would be mad at Nintendo for doing that, because Twilight Princess is already that long, and it’s a Gamecube game.

      • Robert Rhoades

        YES!!!

      • Andreas Sunde

If that ever happens I’ll just wait for the complete package. I want my Nintendo games completely on the shelf, not locked digitally to a console.

      • val berger

It could indeed work. Nintendo could create some Spinoff like Majora’s Mask via a DLC as Majora’s Mask also recycled many elements from OoT. So, why not, if it’s not just another Master Quest, I’t totally go for it. There would be room for quite something. Sidequests, a new campaign and so on.

    • greengecko007

Zelda U will be a masterpiece like all others before it. But dear God, please don’t let Link look like that. Bleach blonde hair and a bad tan? He looks like a beach bum lost in a dungeon.

      • Linksawakeningisazeldagame

I agree with you, but you would get used to it eventually.

    • Linksawakeningisazeldagame

Sorry, but one of the unexpected elements is probably a art style that isn’t realistic.

  • MTGSWE

Darn. I want E3 to be nooooow <:O

  • ancientgamer

really wish i had a time machine so i could be playing this now!

  • Arthur Jarret

I really don’t understand any of the criticism any zelda game ever got. Except for Zelda’s Adventure for CDI.

Even the other two CDi games were pretty good games – just a shame about the lack of Nintendo endorsement and the fact the animations have aged so horribly: But if you play these as ‘The legend of zelda saturday morning cartoon: the game’ you can have some fun.

But Phantom hourglass, Skyward sword and other zelda games that have gotten a lot of flak are all great games and amazing experiences. They’re the reason I buy Nintendo consoles at launch.

    • D.M.T

Some idiots criticize Zelda games for not being “mature enough”.

They want Zelda to be like Darksiders or something.

      • Clel

“It’s only for REAL gamers if there’s violence and gore involved HURR DURR”

        • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

Call of Zelda: Hyrule warfare :V

LINK WITH GUNS ZOMG NUCLEAR EXPLOSION

          • Eva Amore

Zalo 5: Hyrule is infested by a race of alien octorks who enjoy raping others with tentacles. If link fails everyone in the world will be molested. :L

      • Andreas Sunde

Honestly, after having played both: Zelda is a lot darker than Darksiders.

      • Arthur Jarret

If I want to play a zelda game like Darksiders, I’ll just play Darksiders!
        ^ ) ^

I have actually heard more often that people want Zelda to be more like the Elder scrolls.

I actually enjoy the solid art direction and well-thought out environments of the zelda series more than the (also great) open world with vast areas of nothing worth investigating of the elder scrolls.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Not like, but the dark style could be a good pointer on what a TP styled game could look on in HD on Wii U.

    • JVAN63

I agree, every Zelda game I’ve played on a Nintendo machine has been great for the tech at the time. I can’t bring myself to play the original, but anything after Link for NES – No problem. I bought a CDi back when they came out strickly to play the Zelda games. They did not have the Nintendo magic or hooks though. Luckily, I played them and sold the thing fast before CDi became a worthless brick.

      • Ace

Why can’t you bring yourself to play the original?

        • JVAN63

The searching for caves, usage of bombs to discover new areas, etc. makes it too arcade like for me. I don’t have the patience I used to back then when it was new. Also, after I’d even played Zelda II, I realized how much more the NES was capable of, and it became my favorite for 4 years. I hardly ever played Zelda 1 after that. Z1 IS a good game, but I think the franchise just keeps getting better with every game. Although I have to say that Ocarina of Time and A Link to the past are my favorites. I also agree with Nintenward; Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, etc. were amazing, especially compared to other titles for the DS. They completely exploit the capabilities of the system.

          • Arthur Jarret

Exactly, a lot of people are whining about the touchscreen-based control method for walking / fighting – but I actually think this adds a lot to the games, mainly because this has been implemented so well in the games (much better than in the prince of persia DS games, at least)

      • Link

should have saved it. like 500$ on ebay

        • JVAN63

I sold it sometime in 1991, right before getting a SNES. That was about 22 years ago. That would be ~$23 a year, or about 6 cents a day. And that’s not subtracting whatever I paid for it. Also, don’t look at what people are asking for a game on ebay. Look at what they’re selling for. Three years ago you could get it for $24-40 on ebay. Right now there’s one ending on ebay in 1:44 with three bids, currently going for $5.50. Where did you see one selling for $500?

          • Link

Weird once i saw one for sale with a bunch of games for 500$…. good thing i didnt buy it

          • Arthur Jarret

The Nintendo character-based CDi games do sell for ~100 bucks each – pure for collector purposes. I’m glad I got mine in the worthless period!

The CDi itself sells for … not so much…

    • Nintedward

I absolutely loved Phantom hourglass , Spirit tracks and for that matter EVERY main Zelda game. All masterpieces.

      • Arthur Jarret

The non main zelda games are pretty good, too! :D

I definitely recommend Tingle’s Rosy Rupee Land

    • Andreas Sunde

Both Skyward Sword and OoT3D, the only Zelda games I’ve ever played, had the same huge issue; the camera is complete and utter shit. Apart from that, I love them.

      • Arthur Jarret

I never had any issue with the camera. It usually went where I wanted and I found the ‘tap L to center, hold L to target’ setup pretty easy when it didn’t.

I’m pretty used to it, though – the same camera type has been used since OoT (64)

        What issues did you have?

        • Andreas Sunde

Probably that I’m used to controlling the camera with the right stick, as the PS2 was the first console I ever got (at 11, pretty late to the party). Haven’t gotten very far in either of them, but the issues I had, were most noticable with Girahim and Barinade. The camera never went where I wanted it to.
But ither than that, two of the best games I’ve ever played. Just wish they’d add support for the CCP…

          • Arthur Jarret

My first console was an atari 2600… I’m from the two button era :D Maybe I’m more forgiving of the camera as I watched the zelda series evolve together with technology.

I personally think zelda has one of the best camera systems – pre-dual-analogue (with the exception of obvious fixed camera angle or single-axis follow camera).

OoT is a pionier in this regard, the first 3D game that used the target system to focus on an enemy (as well as the first game that used context sensitive buttons), battle and not having to control the camera. But I can certainly imagine how it would feel bad to have an AI camera + target system if you’re used to having dual sticks.

  • D.M.T

2015 is too far away. Give us this new Zelda in 2014 please.

I never expect anything from Zelda games. I just sit back and wait for Nintendo to impress me and they always do.

    • hikkerd

do you want it to be rushed or wath just be patient and the game will be the most awesome game ever in history

    • Andreas Sunde

“A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is always bad”
      – Miyamoto

  • Super Buu

I just realized now… E3 is the same day as my birthday! Surprise me, Nintendo!

    • wober2

      maybe a cake?

      • Super Buu

There better be cake! or Candy! or Chocolate!

  • peeer

There goes the big hype train.

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

This will be the Zelda that blows everything else away. I cannot wait.

  • Mark Thom

    DAM!!!! can”t wait

  • wober2

I hope some day they take link out of medievel times. Since the stories always have time components I would like to see link appear in different time settings (an altered present, the future). This can go horribly wrong or can be a breath of fresh air.

  • Ace

Zelda is my favorite series. Just the thought that it is going to be the biggest game Nintendo has ever done (in terms of world size etc) makes me drool. I can’t wait for 2015…I want the game now!

    • Fred

Zelda USED to be my favorite series, until I played Xenoblade Chronicles. Now I’m stoked for “X” and at the same time I’m hoping the next Zelda can one up Xenoblade.

      • Ace

Interesting, sounds like I will have to try those out. I am sure that this new Zelda will one up all games. All this hype about it being the largest they’ve ever done has got me stoked!

  • Michael DeVore

I would rather have The Adventures of Link with an ending were he is possessed by Ganon followed by The Legend of Zelda where he’s rescued by Zelda. Anything with more continuity would be better.

    • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

      Mmm… an interesting concept indeed

  • Mr. J

Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! My dog bit my gamepad charger in half and its dead.

    • Denvy

      Only $20 man

    • iceazeama

sorry about that……. needed food and thought your charger was a dog treat.

  • Einar

The only thing that would suprise me is if they include rpg elements from Zelda 2.. Which I actually think would be quite interesting.

  • Big-B

I have cardiomyopathy so every time I see a new zelda game I get so excited it can literally kill me. lulz

  • Xavier Lopez Chabelo
  • http://twitch.tv/dve2k DVE

Just like Byron Scott said, “I CAN’T WAIT!” xD

  • Sdudyoy

I just hope It’s not another Skyward sword that one was an okay game, But it did not have the exploration aspect of Zelda.

    • bakedapplepie

Skyward Sword was a great game. But I agree Zelda games need to be open world and explorative. I like to feel as though you are truly roaming the countryside and entering villages. Twilight Princess did a good job of fulfilling this. That said I really can’t wait for a new Zelda title in HD, Nintendo won’t disappoint they know how important this franchise is.

    • Dampf

I agree. And it was way too hand holding, the dungeons are too linear and the world is too bright, happy and naive.

  • Chris Hamilton

I hope this game gets released within the next few months. It looks good

    • Cameron

      One can only dream…

  • Kenshin0011

Link turning into a wolf in Twilight Princess was a pretty unexpected feature…

  • http://www.w-o-n.org/ GoldDreams

The expected is what I love about Zelda games. I am iffy about this. Most of the time when they add unexpected changes they change it too much and ruin a perfectly good series. For example look how they ruined Metroid by making it a FPS.

    • Andreas Sunde

Saying Prime “ruined Metroid” appears to be a rather unpopular opinion on the internet…

      • http://www.w-o-n.org/ GoldDreams

I couldn’t careless on what the popular opinion says. For me the prime series is a perfect example of how to ruin a classic. by making it the worst genre in gaming, a FPS.

  • Mr. Nick

New elements eh? Bring it on!

  • Sydney Ultrasyd

    Oh my bad, 2015 :’(

  • iceazeama

im hoping for a big change like they did with windwaker and MM. those games remain great and are in their own genre.

  • mojack411

I’m getting goosebumps from thinking about it.

  • Johny

woah its gonna be huge >:>

  • nf_zeta

its amazing how a title can give someone so much hype for a game so far away, just from that one little sentence i’m ready and rearing for that new Zelda not too mention what might come after it as Aonuma says he wants to work on something else.

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Hmm expect the unexpected… So the game is gonna be like Zelda 2 adventure of link? Or will it be comparable with the graphics of the 8 bit era, maybe like minecraft?
Now that is the unexpected, but I hope it’ll be more like the Hobbit an unexpected journey (word joke you get it? haha) Looking FORWARD TO IT, BRING IT ON!!!

  • Dimitra Giorgiou

i have a funny feeling it will come at the end of 2014, not 2015 :P

Real time gaming? as of night when night and day when day?! :B

Imagine what u did in the game affected the real world. imagine playing the ocarina in the game to make the game and real world time change. Although that is not possible to do that, that would be absolutely epic!

i was thinking more like, in the morning (IRL) you can find, epona, then at night (IRL) theres ghost, by getting epona ready for the night, you can fight againts the ghost at 1:00 am or sumthin!

I want the art style to be like the demo, only more beautiful. I want the techdemo to compare to the game in the same way Zelda64 compares to OoT.

So they say. I know one thing – the Xbox One is done before it get’s started! No one wants to buy a spy machine by a new world order corporation! I am sure there is some spy shit in the WIndows I am using now, but at least there is software to deal with that. This won’t help Nintendo, but looks like this upcoming generation is all Sony’s! Man, they currently have the longest run in video game history!

    Twilight Princess “dark”?
Lol no. More like twisted goofy.

Majora’s Mask was something dark, besides the obvious.

A teaser trailer for a game coming out in 2 years? Don’t think that will happen. I only expect screenshots and info.

I would love a really big, detailed, easy to explore world. I would rather see a new world then the same Hyrule though. I would like to see a way to use loftwings (or some other flying animal) to fly over the overworld. Seriously, that would be epic.
