Satoru Iwata talks about Nintendo’s limitations

Nintendo can't do this alone. Iwata addresses the lack of third party support.

Iwata2Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has responded to the Wii U’s struggling efforts and lack of third-party software. In a recent interview with IGN, he acknowledged that the Wii U needs third party support because Nintendo can’t do everything on its own.

“The fact of the matter is that there are some areas of game creation that Nintendo is very good at, but there are other things that Nintendo is not very good at. There are huge numbers of fans of Nintendo software, but at the same time, those types of players still sometimes want to play something else on our platform. Because of that, we always need third parties to support us, in order to make our platform complete.”

Like the Wii U, the 3DS also suffered a lacklustre launch, but sales were subsequently revived thanks to a number of first party titles. Now there is strong third-party support for the platform as well. Iwata and team are approaching the situation with the Wii U in a similar light.

“What we need to do is regain the momentum of the Wii U in the marketplace and establish successful examples of third-party Wii U software. Our focus is, first of all, to regain the momentum of the Wii U towards the end of this year, and then we’ll try to establish successful third-party Wii U software titles. I believe in the importance of third-party support for Nintendo platforms. I’m very willing to change the current situation.”

While Nintendo vowed not to make the same mistakes they made with launching Wii U as they did with launching the 3DS, it’s important to note that a handheld gaming platform and a home console are two different beasts entirely. For one, the Wii U marks Nintendo’s first experience developing games for an HD system. Fortunately, Iwata is hard at work addressing the situation. From here, things can only improve.

Yeah we need a new third party game… by Platinium… STARFOX…

    • lozman1122

You know, I’ve only ever played starfox assault. Don’t get me wrong, it was good. But not incredible. Any suggestions for what another starfox game I should play?

      • QuizmasterBos

Starfox 64, of course. Widely hailed as the best one.

        • lozman1122

          I don’t have an N64 though:/

          • XEri0x11

            Get a N64 emulator then…

          • lozman1122

Nah. I only have a laptop and I use it for schoolwork. If I put games on it, it’s be so freakin distracting and I’d never get any work done haha.

          • Elem187

Get Starfox 64 on 3DS… The port is superior to the original.

          • lonewolf88

star fox 64 is on the 3ds as a retail game.

        • Christopher Acuna

It’s on 3ds. I downloaded it off the E-Shop and it is still one of the best games ever made. And if you are the mood for some N64 throwback greatness in your hands…download Mario 64 and Ocarina Of Time.

          • lozman1122

I just got a 3DS 2 weeks ago, so I better look it up! I have ocarina of time, but I’ll look for the others!

      • Nintenjoe82

£7 for Lylat Wars (aka Starfox 64) on Wii Shop (accessible from Wii U menu).

        • lozman1122

Thanks! It’s sad that I don’t use this more often. I’m a poor college kid with limited funds. But I think I found my next purchase!

      • JVAN63

Starfox Adventures was my personal favorite (GC). Completely engrossing, late night, red-eyed adventure game.

      • ConCity Soldier

        I only played Starfox 64.

      • Clel

STAR FOX 64 (aka Lylat Wars)

That’s a real Star Fox game. I hated Assault.

EDIT: Woops I just saw that he answered you.

    • iceazeama

nintendo needs to buy platinum games. then they can have starfox and can have all their other great games exclusive. cant get 3rd party buy some good developers.

      • Kaihaku

I agree. Buying Monolith Soft was a great move and Platinum Games sounds like another quality studio. I’m not usually a fan of larger companies buying up smaller companies but Nintendo is different as they respect artistic vision.

I can only imagine how good Xenogears would have been if Square Soft hadn’t rushed it and crippled the second disc in the process, what a change in culture for the creator and most of his team to come to work at Nintendo where the line is, “A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.”

I was reminded of this earlier this month when Retro explained that they had had the choice of what to develop next and that they chose Donkey Kong Country…because they still had ideas they wanted to try. That’s not the game that I wanted them to develop and I don’t think that a new sidescrolling entry in a classic series is what the Wii U really needs right now to flesh out it’s software library…but I have to respect Nintendo for letting their studios follow their artistic vision.

        • iceazeama

that is true, look at rareware when they were with nintendo.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog

My 3 games will help Wii U, hopefully.

    • lozman1122

Lost world does look legit. Job well done.

    • iceazeama

yeah the 3rd one better be good, the winter games!!!! yeah thanks for that one!!!!

      • Luffy

i still think that mario &sonic at the olympic is not part of the deal. it sounds more like journalist assuming it is the second game. i have yet to see any official news regarding this.

        • Sidney Majurie

Sega and Nintendo already confirmed it is part of the deal.

          • iceazeama

exactly, look at all my thumbs down. aaahhhhh its just so soothing, it looks like you guys would rather have a shitty mario sonic sports game that would of been on there regardless. whatever your loss retards i was hoping for all 3 games to be worthwhile.

          • Luffy

yeah that is what I hear, but I’ve never seen a source. Unless you can give me a source that tells me from the mouth of Nintendo or Sega that this is the case, I still see it as a journalist assumption.

    • ReckoningReckoner

Modern sonic sucks. Also so does Kingdom Hearts.

*prepares to be attacked by 12-year old children”

  • lozman1122

I read somewhere that a state (new Hampshire, was it?) has the rights to kingdoms of amalur since EA dropped them. I always wondered, what if Nintendo bought that ip? What could they bring to the open world rpg table? They probably won’t, but one can dream. As for now, I’d like to see these other third party games that are coming that Nintendo mentioned at e3. I’d like those developers to step forward.

    • Colin Kells-Murphy

The state was Rhode Island, and if Nintendo bought the ip and studio, I would love Nintendo even more and would on my favorite ips of nintendo, right up there with f-zero, kirby, yoshi and mario. I played that game on my xbox and I loved it and was dissaponted when the studio shut down. It would be a dream for nintendo to resurrect the ip, even get the mmo that was being worked on based on the world for the wii u and 3ds before it got shut down. Man what a dream!

  • A SNES Day Off

Iwata looks like he’s holding a rifle.

    This means business!

    • iceazeama

the only rifle he is holding is at nintendo.

      • NintendoNoob

No he’s pointing it at your head.

        • DereX

          It’s a railing…

          • Nintendofreak

dk somepeople dont have ever seen a rifle that is not out of cod

          • iceazeama

some people arnt retarded blind fanboys. cod sucks same think with milked mario 5 billion same thing is happening to zelda.

          • Luca Invernizzi

Lol… there have been a couple of zelda games for each home nintendo sistem… how the hell does that even compare to cod? XD

Even for mario, the name is the same, but comparing the 2D platform, the 3D games like galaxy and the sports/kart games is simply… well… stupid.

CoD is the same fucking game, with the same fucking gameplay every single time, there have been like 12 Cod Games in the last 10 years… all the same… how does that compare to mario or Zelda?

I mean… there are a lot of thing you can complain about nintendo, right now… but comparing those games to CoD… that’s insane…

          • iceazeama

those game arnt even close to cod. there just all we get and its getting old.

          • Luca Invernizzi

My mistake. I belived you not to be a troll.

            I’m sorry, please, go on.

          • peter griffin

cod is regurgitated shit every year.

          • Nintendofreak

mario is alwasy the same except for the non super bros marios…but saying the legend of zelda is the same is A FUCKING SACRILEGE

          • peter griffin

regarding everything you are saying and that you call people ON A NINTENDO WII U WEBSITE fanboys, and that YOU ARE HERE. makes you look extremely retarded. it takes more of a fanboy to go to OTHER consoles websites just to talk shit about them.. if anyone here is a fanboy it is you my friend.. i find your comments shallow and pedantic.

          • NintendoNoob

I never listen to a guy who doesn’t even have good grammar

          • ConCity Soldier

Yeah, God of War isn’t being milked. Assassins Creed isn’t being milked. Uncharted isn’t being milked. When has 3 Mario Karts come in one gen? Never! Yet all 3 Uncharted come in one gen, about 6 AC games. Btw, Mario is a character not a game. When Metal Gear Solid games have been coming since PS1 its cool, but Mario Kart, one per console is somehow milked. Mario Kart n Mario Bros U are two different games btw. Yeah, nobody but Nintendo are milking. NOT! Nothing wrong with milking anyway if the fans are asking for it, and Nintendo aren’t the only ones milking series. But Nintendo does one game per console, which isn’t bad at all.

          • ItzameyaToad

Ummm he said it “Looks” like a rifle not “it is a rifle”.

      :S

  • iceazeama

what hahahaahah, i found…. found the solution!!!! the solution is…… fire iwata!!!!!!

  • Grulnork

I think ever since the Gamecube, there are very few people who own only a Nintendo console for there gaming purposes. Maybe some families or Nintendofans who do not like anything else and for them I hope Nintendo succeeds in getting third party devs back on board.

But most Nintendo fans are multiplatform owners. Nintendo + PS/XBX/PC. And for them I think third party titles are irrelevant. I am a Nintendo + PC gamer and that fills almost all the gaming needs I got. It’s very unlikely I will buy many third party games on the Wii U anyway, unless they skip the PC completely.

    • Elem187

Agreed… 3rd party publishers rarely put any effort into ports on Nintendo consoles, it has pretty much conditioned us not to pay attention to third party software on Nintendo, so when a superior port comes along, like NFSMWu, it gets ignored because people are assuming its going to be weak sauce.
I really do feel bad for Criterion who put so much effort into it and it bombed hard….. I appreciate the effort, I have it for both PC/Wii U, and the Wii U version is great just because of Off TV-Play and how easy it is to switch cards and repaint/repair on the fly, controlling traffic and time of day.

    • kenny Johnson

I’m a single console person..Have no plans to buy anything but the Wii U. I tend to like Nintendo Games — with the tone and style they employ. So I will buy 3rd Party titles that excite me. If Ubisoft re-releases BG&E in HD for Wii U, I’ll buy it. If they release Beyond Good and Evil 2, I will definitely get it! But I’m not that into the dark and/or violent M-rated shooters or sports games. So if that’s what 3rd parties offer, then yeah, they’ll be ignored by me.

      • Grulnork

I sincerely hope for you that there will be more good third party titles then.

If your reason to stick with Nintendo is because you like the style then may I suggest you try out some indie games on PC? Games like Orcs Must Die or Mark of the Ninja. They are cheap and not so demanding on your system.

Of course you are free to stick with Nintendo and I am just as much a fan as you. :) But I think you can find a lot enjoyment in indie games if you are a big fan of the big N.

        • kenny Johnson

I don’t play as many PC games now-a-days, but grew up playing Point and Click adventures (Sierra, LucasArts, etc.). I have bought several eShop titles (Trine 2, Inferno, etc.). I’ll have to check out some of the ones you mentioned though, thanks.

  • kevin

Saying sorry is doing nothing. Get out there and promote it. Its sad that wii has more 3rd party support then wiiu. Its called. Marketing. It does wonders. Promote. The best buy is nice but no marketing to let people know it was happening. How r the wii people suppose to know. Advertise the event or something, not just wiiu users reading website

    • kenny Johnson

What do you consider “Marketting”? It was advertised on Best Buy’s website and at the store beforehand.

    • Jimmy D. Fugate

While the Wii may have had “more” third party support, the Wii U still has “better” third party support.

  • Bob Charlie

I won’t even be able to afford any third party games for awhile because of all the great first party games coming soon.
I’ll have to cut back on the smoke in order to afford the third parties…yeah, not gonna’ happen.

  • Petri

They didn’t use their 1 year head-start properly.
But I don’t think Wii U is anywhere near doomed.

    • ItzameyaToad

True but I still think the year headstart will ultimately prove not wasted.

    • Triforcelightning

Watch this and tell me that 1 year head start wasn’t used well to some degree

  • willweinert

I’m not sure if Satoru Iwata is the most majestic person alive, or the most terrifying.

  • Joey Perez

Give away a big Mario game like 3d world when people buy a system ….bundle the system with Zelda no price drop …. It will sell …giving away one free game while selling millions of consoles to gain a huge install base .

    • Maxwell Baumgarten

Wii u is already selling at a loss at its current price, and if they sell just one game with it at full price for 360 or 420 dollars, then it only becomes profitable by a few dollars. Such a thing would never happen. Now if they made a 16 GB console available in white or black as just one sku bundled with a new wii sports or nintendo land for $300 problem would be solved. Something cheap, and already developed as a bundle.

  • Ducked

I just want Kingdom Hearts III on the Wii U.

    • KonjikinoSora

Yeah, especially due to the teasing of online play, which is only free on Wii U. However, Nomura does not seem to want to port it due to the lack of DirectX11.

      • dxcvs

Isn’t project cars dx11 and coming to wii u ? Why no kh3?

      • Samuel Mungy

Why would the Wii U use DirectX when it’s owned by Microsoft? Not even the PS4 will use it. I think the phrase you are looking for is DirectX11 equivalent features.

      • Chris Heskin

http://www.nintengen.com/2012/07/wii-u-confirmed-specs-from-sdk-gpu-info.html Yeah I don’t see this excuse being valid at all, would even call it lying.

      • Ducked

I think Square thinks that it’ll be low sales. But them bringing it to the Xbox One and not Wii U is messed up. We have got 4 spin offs, and Dream Drop Distance being the one to dive right into Kingdom Hearts 3. It would just make sense to bring KH3 to the Wii U

        • Marc Duarte

The X-Box ONE is already guaranteed DOA in Japan, so Square-Enix are idiots for not putting Kingdom Hearts III on the Wii U also. These decisions of theirs make no business sense, so there’s obviously some kind of negative emotions against Nintendo involved here. I hope they pay dearly for them in the end.

          • Ducked

Yeah, power isn’t a problem, Square must have someting against Nintendo

    • Dave_Val

Here you can make your petition:

      http://www.change.org/petitions/square-enix-bring-kingdom-hearts-3-to-the-wiiu-alongside-the-ps4-and-xbox-one-3

I already did mine and hope this help to make it happen ^_^

      • Ducked

Thanks, but I already filled it out. I seriously hope Square sees this.

    • ConCity Soldier

I never played a Kingdom Hearts game before, but 3 trailer looks nice. I would definitely buy this game if it releases on the Wii U. It’ll be neat to see what they can do with the Gamepad.

      • Ducked

By never playing Kingdom Hearts you did pick out a good point there. The gamepad would be great for Kingdom Hearts, you could change the party, edit magic commands, and more all on the Wii U gamepad without pausing the game. You should pick up a Kingdom Hearts game, there worth it.

  • lonewolf88

  • Potemkin

Price Cut -> More Sales -> Bigger Install Base -> Third Party Games.

The situation with Nintendo is very different than with Sony and Microsoft as Nintendo’s image is more kid friendly which has become an issue in order to get third party developers to do something serious for a Nintendo console.

    • Chris Heskin

Really? I can think of a handful of critically acclaimed “serious” non kid friendly Nintendo exclusives that have come out over the past three generations. Resident Evil one Remake, Goldeneye, Xenoblade Chronicles just to name a few.

      X

      • Potemkin

Thing is, those are titles born in different console generations. Sure
Nintentdo has gotten some really great mature and hard core games, but
they are few compared to the ones offered by the competition. For every game directed towards adults/teenagers, there are 9 directed for a younger audience. Don’t get me wrong, Nintendo is great for parents and kids that want to spend quality time together but it’s not as good to keep mature audience interested.

        • Lord Carlisle

I personally never refer to it as the “mature audience”. Because, as is always stated, there’s a ridiculous amount of young, immature, raging kids playing “mature” games like COD.

          • Potemkin

COD? No no no. Titles such as Heavy Rain, The Last Of Us, L.A. Noir, Eternal Darkness and even stuff like Dark Souls. Titles such as those.

          • Lord Carlisle

In that case, I can somewhat agree with what you’re saying.

  • $41809923

please bring lost planet 3 to the wii u

  • ludist210

You know what would revive sales? Slash the price by 25% ala the 3DS. Lose some money in the short-term, but make it back in droves with the upcoming software lineup.

  • Bob Singh

    Oh things better improve

    • Petri

Dont have much faith in these.

  • DemonRoach

Bingo. And stop rejecting RPG releases in the west, that is just plain bull shit.

    • iceazeama

yeah noa is so horrible. stupid fanboys are so dumb, they will stick up for anything nintendo does or is it because they dont like any good games besides mario and zelda. if they just localized everything their systems could have more than the same exact 5 fucking games.

  • Mitchell
  • Super Buu

A third party game I want to see on Wii U is Kingdom Hearts III.

    • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

Immpossible, SQUARE ENIX already comfirmed that KH III and FFXV are not coming to the Wii U. But there is a reason… just one reason… its not about the Wii U is the weakest next gen console, also the sales do not matter here… just one thing…

DirectX 11. Wii U is compatible with DirectX 10.1, but not 11 seo yeah… Nintendo really fucked up in that little detail… and its going to cost many third party games, many third party games

      • Ryan House

Its SAD many games during the first few years of a consoles Life also release on current GEN if it was released on current gen Wii U wouldn’t be a Problem

      • kenny Johnson

        Link?

      • Marc Duarte

If Square is that incompetent with programming, then maybe they should just ask Nintendo to let the folks over at Monolith Soft show them how it’s done; they’ve already proven themselves experts with the Wii U hardware if the trailers of their currently project “X” are anything to go by.

Also, by all accounts, Disney likes the Wii U (no doubt because Nintendo and them share the same family-friendly image), so they should just step in and force Square-Enix to put it on the console like they did to EA with Star Wars games. If they do that, all these weak excuses about the Wii U not being to able handle DirectX blah blah blah will just stop completely.

      • theblackfrog

for dx11 u need a license form microsoft (i think its expensive) so its not nintendos flaw. wii u has compute shader and open gl which is similar to dx 11. it just a lame excuse from square coz its not a simple port

  • Maxwell Baumgarten

At least ubisoft will continue to support them. But nintendo needs to have more 1st part support too, which is the primary thing. We get pickmin, then zelda remake, then crappy 3d world then mk7, and then what? Another year long drought?

  • Scott IsMe

This is why I continue to support Nintendo: they retain their values without ignoring the will of their fan base.

It’s nice to see that they recognize all those things we’re crying about and in fact they even agree. They’re saying it’s not that they don’t care, it’s that they don’t want to attempt it when they’re clearly not experts in the genre.

I’m cool with that: they want us to have the best experience and that means experienced quality rather than “made by noobs.”

I sincerely take this to mean they’re looking out for us as gamers and not just consumers. I like that.

    Woot.

  • Nintendude

And I smell a new troll on this site.

  • Mario

    Yes and no.

  • Agent721

I agree with you…I’ve been waiting for an Uncharted from Nintendo for years. I don’t understand WHY they can’t make one. I’m currently playing the Last of Us and it is superb. This is where Nintendo makes me raving mad. It knows its audience, its OG audience at least, has grown up, yet the best grown up games are on the other two consoles. Uncharted has become by far my favorite series…so you see, I’m not all Nintendo mad!

However, my point the whole time is that I can’t play Nintendo’s games anywhere else BUT on a Nintendo system. And that’s why I have a Wii U, for its games. If there was some magical console that had Uncharted, Allan Wake, Gears of Wars, Rachet & Clank, Heavy Rain and all of Nintendo’s stuff, plus every 3rd party game, I’d buy that console!

But instead, I end up owning all the consoles out there, as I am a huge game fan, of a ton of different games. I’m probably going to buy a Ouya as well!

The way I look at it, different systems are like different channels…sometimes I watch ESPN, sometimes HBO, sometimes E and sometimes CNBC. With different consoles, you can get that type of viewing variety, per say.

  • Chris Heskin

Like I said before, come at me bro.
