Nintendo finally gets around to advertising the Wii U… in Japan

One of the biggest criticisms both fans and critics have leveraged at Nintendo is the lack of advertising the company has done for the Wii U. Considering the release of the Wii and the advertising campaign that surrounds it, you’d be hard pressed to believe Nintendo released a new console just a few months ago.

That seems to be changing as Nintendo is ramping up the efforts to advertise the new console in Japan, but you can bet we’ll be seeing some more advertising in the West soon. That being said, the Japanese market and its advertising is definitely.. different than what we see over here. What do you think of these advertisements?

Let us know in the comments.

Very entertaining. I wish I can say the same for the West.

    • Elem187

But you can’t advertise a console if there isn’t any games yet… Japan is about to get Pikmin 3 next week, if I’m not mistaken, so it makes sense they are firing up the advertising machine.

Now if they don’t advertise Pikmin 3 in Europe coming in two weeks, then I will scratch my head.

      • Avery Massenburg

They could still advertise Nintendo Land and New Super Luigi U those are already out.

  • Gabrielsen

Damn, i love theese Japanese commercials!

    • Nothing5555

      Needs more Tentacles…

They’re using Ai No Uta again! I love that song!

  • AlThor

Forget the lost in translation, Pikiman 3 looks amazing!

  • awoeiudfn

(this is a fake name) Well this is very very good news. Guys that means that Nintendo is going to release it in america soon. :) GJ Nintendo your starting to advertise.

  • Saleh Sbeiti

    The Nintendo Land Wiimote bundle!!!!!

  • Luffy

Ashley, you didn’t include the best one!

This is the commercial for Yakuza 1&2 HD. It’s soooo funny!

    • iambubbaq

That…Was amazing lol Understanding what they were saying made it so much better haha

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

I wish i lived in japan, it seems so much nicer there, and i always loved the crazyness japan has, as more crazy it gets, more fun it gets, but its just my opinion.

    • RocketHopper

Every country has its problems… It’s not all fun and crazy.

      • Alexander Kleinwechter

Yeah, i commented on a reply from nothing5555 ( i might have missed a 5 there) and of course there are downsides to everything, but what i meant if you make the most out of it you are going to have it like you wanted.

    • giggi

It may seem nice to live in Japan, but I guess you either didn’t know or forget how fucking expensive just everything is there…

  • iceazeama

noa is also the worst foe advertising.

    • Peter Parker

Actually, now Iwata is on NoA, so we might see some changes on the advertising area.

      • iceazeama

if thats so,maybe just maybe, the localizations will be better.

      • The Clockwork Being

Let Reggie do the advert. He simply is just too good.

Imagine at the end of the advert: IS YOUR BODY READY

        • Nothing5555

“Imagine at the end of the advert: IS YOUR BODY READY”

The the Wii Fit trainer comes out and they start exercising together.

BTW I was watching the Smash Brothers trailer for the Wii Fit Trainer and man does she have some cleavage. Is she modeled like that in the actual Wii Fit game?

          • The Clockwork Being

Never played Wii Fit but still i think she does

    • Super Buu

Agreed. NOA needs to step up their advertizement because I don’t see how you could make people consider buying games when all you show is the people playing it and not the game itself.

  • Cesar Barroso

translate that s*it and bring it here!!!

  • QuizmasterBos

um…. does anyone know what was up with Peach in the NSLU commercial?

    • Gabe Hoffman

Expecting Mario? Too bad! Luigi time!

    • Robert

      MAAA-MAAA-MAAAA

  • Negatron99

Hope they come to the UK soon, had enough of explaining what the WiiU is to people. Those commercials were great. Quick Nintendo, get them everywhere.

  • Zombie_Andrew

Nintendo need to advertise in the west ASAP, along with showing of the gamepad as much as possible with as many games and apps as possible

  • Nintendofreak

    stupidly sexy asians girls

    • Nintedward

I thought the girl in vid 2 was naked :(

Pikmin in roughly 25 days for me 😀

  • XroyD

If they put these commercials on the US and Europe it would sell a lot better.

  • david jarman

    Pikmin 3 looking Gorgeous.

    • thedeciderU

yes, wow! can’t wait to try it out!

  • cement

i liked the pikmin commercial with the lady…. cuz of 3 reasons….. 1) she waz pretty 2) the piknmin wuz cute 3) the song @ the end…..

  • Sidney Majurie

I don’t understand why we can’t just get English versions of these commercials. Nintendo doesn’t realize its fans and the western gamer in general love Japanese cultural quirkiness and that could differentiate it from MicroSony. I loved those Wii commercials.

Bring that Japanese flavor back Ninty!

    • John Raybell

Hell no, those are terrible ads, i would cry if that was for the US, I already hate the US ads as it is, nintendo ads make the gamer look like they are retarded 5 year olds. NO thanks.

They need to change the way they do all there ads, fire that ad guy!

      • Sidney Majurie

“nintendo ads make the gamer look like they are retarded 5 year olds. NO thanks.”

I’ll be 35 tomorrow. I’m a college grad and have my own business, I have a wife who graduated from the top business school in New England, and we have two beautiful kids. And I’m a secure Nintendo fan. Sounds to me like you have gaming insecurity issues. Perhaps you should play MicroSony instead since their ads make you feel like a big sophisticated man. LOL.

        • John Raybell

Sadly the wii had better ads.

I have been a nintendo gamer since birth pretty much.

How does anything I have said make me insecure?
For someone who claims to be a college grad and own his own business you sure are a fucking idiot.

They have horrible ads, fucking deal with it.

          Fuck you

          • Sidney Majurie

There’s the sophistication I was expecting. Some people take offense to a phrase involving “…retarded 5 year olds…” Thanks for proving my point.

  • MujuraNoKamen

OK, no dubstep is a good start. The 2nd Pikmin one was the best, I hope they do one like that. I just hope they do one here explaining a bit about the console (not an add-on) and talk about MiiVerse, Off-TV play, and the variety of games available (please show off some Mature stuff like Watch Dogs and Bayonetta, painting a kids-only image will only hurt the console and the success of the games) And ditch the actors as well, aside from in Nintendoland where you need to show asymmetric gameplay in action, it just comes across as cheesy, so focus on game footage and when the time comes put on critic’s scores and stuff so people can see the brilliance of pikmin and become interested in it rather than immediately writing it off as some weird child’s game – it pains me to think there are people who think that about those games. Anyway, good start, but not quite there yet keep it up.

    • The Clockwork Being

This is exactly how you put an add. Plus teh critic scores wont be hard to find a agree majority of Nintendo games always get great ratings and awesome scores

  • gamesplayswill

    *in Jeremy Clarkson voice*
    These are the best ads…

    In the world.

  • John Andalora

Good. Glad to see Nintendo finally spend some money advertising their bloody console after people have been clamoring for them to do that for months.

    • John Raybell

yeah they “claim” they listen to everyone, but they haven’t for years!

They do what they want! When they want!

And the consumer gets the shitty rollercoaster ride because of it

      • John Andalora

        Hear hear!

  • Johny

japanese ads are just THE best xD love ’em

  • Adrian

    Mario…Mario!.. Mario JA NAI!?!?!?

  • bakedapplepie

The second Pikmin commercial and the NintendoLand commercial’s are great. I really think Nintendo should embrace there Japanese culture with advertisements in the West.

  • Ducked

    There very different….lol

  • tooby77

Iv could sell hell alot of wii u if they had me running commercial. I am ashame of the job they do

  • Super Buu

    Japanese ads= Best ads

  • Bob Charlie

Advertisement in the U.S. has increased, too. I’ve been seeing more of Nintendo on cable through commercials and Reggie making an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show. Advertisement on YouTube has increased as well.

  • MrAmanojaku

When I was in Japan back in April, WiiU was the only console I saw any advertisements for. Every train I rode on had Wii U ads in it.

  • thedeciderU

yes nintendo, show game footage and the brand the wiiu as a new console! i hope we get something similar in the u.s. that hypes the system through gameplay and a narration along the lines of “…experience it/these games only on the all new nintendo wii u home console…”.

the only thing i don’t really care to see are awful videos of children listening to dubstep with a wiiu in the background, with a focus on some large hollywood squares looking cube and not gameplay. those ads were terrible. same with the family ads…they did not rub me the right way as a consumer. they weren’t exciting at all, didn’t show much gameplay at all, and they made me feel awkward, like i didn’t even want anyone to know i’d watched them.

    • Andreas Sunde

“awful videos of children listening to dubstep with a wiiu in the background, with a focus on some large hollywood squares looking cube and not gameplay.”
Wait, are those actually a thing? O_O

      • thedeciderU

        yes.

  • Billy_Perry

These are better, but they still aren’t advertising the Wii U very well, just games for the Wii U. Nintendo need to advertise their Wii U as a console more than they do its games.
Like the console adds for the Wii, or the N64. The ones that they had ready for launch just weren’t good enough at advertising the console.

  • CharmanderRulz

I have never played a Pikmin game before but they better keep the Pikmin song by Strawberry Flower in the English game! I found an ok video with a translation but it’s not the best. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SL2ePovKMtg You may also want to check out there other songs as there is even one to learn the about of each of the Pikmin.

    • Matthew

Well, if I’m not mistaken, the pikmin would sing this song as an easter egg in Pikmin 2 if you had 20 of each.

      • CharmanderRulz

I don’t know if it was the same Pikmin Strawberry Flower song but yes I heard the same thing.

  • Matthew

First: Peach freaked me out, but made me laugh.
    Second: Beautiful.
    Third: Adorable, beautiful, and perfect.
    Four: What just happened!?

  • DingoWalley

You gotta start somewhere, am I right?

Hopefully, this means more American Commercials that aren’t terrible!

    • manowaffles

I’d be happy with some of those with dubbed English myself. Though the best commercial I’ve seen from Japan was for Monster Hunter G.

      (I love that pig’s expressions!)

  • Rob Lucci

Nintendo commercials from the 80s and 90s were the best.

  • http://people.ign.com/kevinxdxd kevinxDxD

Well i hope were getting better Nintendo commercial here in America.

  • RARE

They get a controller with Nintendoland?!
    A little jealous…

    • manowaffles

Since they didn’t get it free as a pack in with the Deluxe Wii U, i’m less jealous. Besides, my wife wants all our Wiimotes to match…except for my fancy Gold one from Zelda SS.

      • bakedapplepie

The SS controller is the best. Wish I could have gotten a few more.

  • grandlx2

Lame commercials. No wonder Nintendo is struggling if it thinks this is what we want to see.

    • John Raybell

yeah nintendo ads have been down right retarded for fucking years now, horrible ads, every time i see one its like i wanna puke lol.

      HORRIBLE ADS FOR YEARS!

  • Mochlum

I think they need to wait until at least October when there is many more good exclusives (WWHD, Sonic Lost World, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, NSLU, NSMBU, Game and Wario, Nintendo Land, Wii Party U, and Game and Wario.)

    • John Raybell

Um NOOOOOOOOOO! they need to advertise NOW!!!! not wait any longer. are you kidding me

      • Mochlum

Yes, because everyone will go buy the, what, 4 big exclusive games right now? They should at least wait until Pikmin comes out….

  • Madmagican

    LOL, Japanese culture is amazing
the first one in particular made me laugh…. we need these everywhere, not just Japan

  • Daniel Carvalho

    A bit late but

  • sd

Pikmin looks pretty good. Why wouldnt they advertise the Wii U exactly the same way here. The pikmin adverts show the game. Games sell. Release adverts here and do the same thing. I dont care about people sitting down as a family like in the last advert, but that might sell it to kids.

  • sd

Those adverts for pikmin almost made mr preorder the game. It doesnt quite have the appeal for me, but those adverts look good and make it look tempting.

  • Justis Bistawros

Nintendos advertising is great. I just wish i could understand what the people were saying in these four advertisement videos from japan.

  • Cubester_64

Not as insane of a Japanese commercial as a Kamen Rider toy.

  • Linskarmo

    Good commercials. No dubstep. 😉

  • John Raybell

    oh……………………..yay………………………….

  • Sora Morp

Mario? Mario?! MARIO!!! M-M-A-MAMAMAMARIO!! *Luigi appears* Screw him

  • MujuraNoKamen

Is it me or did they say N****r at 0:05 in the Nintendoland video?

  • IRespectU

People, there is a Kickstarter for a Indie RPG, and Wii U version is a stretch goal. They only need 8000$ more for the Wii U version! http://tinyurl.com/m6xjc7u

  • Leon Tizzano

Looks like the Wii U showed up for class after all.. a year late.

  • ICHI

That SMB U and Luigi U advert looks like peach is crying cause shes been kidnapped and kept in a dark hole by Luigi!
It puts the lotion on it’sa skin! Or it’sa gets the warp pipe again!

  • fireheartis1

Now if they would just do commercials like this for the USA it would be awesome. It’s said you see commercials for PS4 already and it’s not coming out until the holidays. Now if Nintendo would get their buts in gear and release some awesome commercials like this in the West we would be getting Wii U sales. Also when I say the last one I was like man freaking cheaters lol.

  • therealruben1

Wii would like to play. With U!

  • J_Joestar

    This is a great one

    • John Raybell

that one is a retarded one, fucking horrible ad

  • Elem187

Oh cool they are selling Nintendoland with Wiimotes over there? You know if they have this bundled with a download version I may get one of these bundles if it comes here… I want to get rid of my retail disc and do a download only future with regard to first party content on the Wii U… still get boxed 3rd party games.

  • Elem187

Well they actually have games coming out in Japan, so it makes sense to advertise there…. So I expect we should see some advertising in Europe around the launch of Pikmin 3 there, and again in the US when Pikmin 3 is ready to launch there.

You gotta have games to advertise before you start dumping money into advertising.. I kinda knew why Nintendo wasn’t advertising the Wii U at all this year… just doesn’t make sense “Hey buy our console today, even though there really isn’t very many first party games yet”… doesn’t seem like it would be very effective… but once you have software on the system, the advertising would actually help then.

  • Michael Jurado

I love that the commercials show game play and not just action sequences or cut scenes :)

  • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

The New Super Luigi U commercial… Swag

  • FlyingBoat

i guess they could be just seeing how their advertisments work before shipping out more locilized versions. plus, nintendo probably cares most about their japanese market anyway.

  • Ryushi

I don’t know why…but I like how that guy is in all pink…

  • Your money

Great, now they just need to make a tingle commerical. 😀
