Super Mario 3D Land Developer Direct? I think that was a mistake.

    • Nintedward

These developer interviews are very cool , that’s why the Direct was short cus it was missing stuff like this :)

      • Clel

You misunderstood lol (I guess I wasn’t clear enough). The name of the game is Super Mario 3D World. In the article, however, right above the video it says Super Mario 3D Land Developer Direct, as opposed to Super Mario 3D World Developer Direct

        • Baum 「ツリー」

the IP’s name is Mario 3DLand, Clel

          • Clel

… No… The name of the IP is Super Mario, and the game seems to have some roots in the game Super Mario 3D Land. The name of THIS games is Super Mario 3D World.

    • Fred

      I loved those developer directs!

      • Clel

        I agree they were awesome!

        • MTGSWE

These videos made me want all of their games. Lucky me Pikmin comes out soon :D same with wonderful 101
I live in Europe so it’s in July and August those games come out.

Damn I want Mario Kart NOW! It looks so great :D

    • Linskarmo

I think perhaps changing the word “mistake” to “typo” might be more clear. I was going to point out the same thing as you did, but it doesn’t matter much at this point.

  • Clel

I thought it was so crazy that they put Wii Fit trainer as one of the characters. Quite bold, but hilarious :D

    • Wayne Beck

Thought the same thing, but it looks pretty well executed.

    • MTGSWE

She will be a cool character. Sakurai is a genius. :D

    • Billy_Perry

I posted this on another article, but what does everyone think to the Link model shown in the trailers and gameplay being the model for the new unannounced Wii U title?

      • Guest No. 3

        HOT. rofl

      • Metal_Man_v2

It’s possible, but it’s just the Skyward Sword/Twilight Princess model.

        • Einar

It’s definately not the SS model, the hair is not the correct color and I don’t think the clothing fits perfectly with that model either. Also, the sound was different than in SS.

          • Metal_Man_v2

It’s still the same character model. It was first used in Twilight Princess, then was reused in Skyward Sword, with some graphical touch ups, and recoloring. The same thing applies to what we see in the new Super Smash Bros. It’s a graphically improved and recolored design of the same model.

      • Thomas Vienna

Well, it looks like a souped-up HD version of Skyward Sword Link, but that might be what the new Zelda U is going for. In my opinion, this Link looks kinda ugly, so I hope he looks a bit more charming once the Zelda U game comes out.

        • SeroReviews

I agree, this might be the Link for Wii U Zelda, or at least a “idea” of what’s gonna be

        • Andrew Hoback

it is skyward, they said the characters are base on there last game not upcoming games

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

        looked SS to me

      • Clel

I think it looked more like a smoother (and of course, HD) version of Skyward Sword Link, with a touch of Twilight Princess.

        • Levi Johansen

Maybe the looks he will have in Zelda U :O
Which is why they didn’t show much of him.

      • Mochlum

To me it looks kind of like Ocarina Link…. can the new Zelda game be a revamp of that art-style/gameplay?

        • Metal_Man_v2

It looks nothing like the OoT Link model. That model had Link with a middle part in his hair, and his outfit was much more basic. He just had his typical green hat and tunic, with white tights and brown boots.

The Link model shown is the Twilight Princess/Skyward Sword Model. You can see his hair swept more to one side. His outfit consists of more detailed clothing, including an undershirt and chainmail, in addition to replacing tights with pants.

          • Mochlum

I’m just saying it doesn’t look quite like the Skyward Sword one or quite like the Twilight Princess one so I thought it looked a little like Ocarina. (in between)

    • Brett Butler
      • ancientgamer

lol i remember that episode, fits here perfectly

      • Mr. J

        That’s just disturbing

      • jay

        just ONE dislike?

        MS maybe?

        • RockGod

Did someone buy a XBONE, it might be watching you…right…now…

        • Clel

Possibly someone who just finds that gif horribly disgusting. I’m having trouble digesting it myself XD

      • The-Master

        Hahaha. Ouch.

    • jay

      :D

      • Clel

I totally called that she would be in the game.

    • Quicksilver88

Strange to me, I mean you bring the townie from AC and WiiFit trainer. I think it is stupid as hell myself. I would like to see a few more cross over characters like Sonic, Viewtiful Joe, why not add the main guy from w101 or even Bayonetta seing that those are exlusives. Hopefully I don’t think the lineup is anywhere near finished so we will likely get many more suprises between now and next year when this releases

  • NkoSekirei

im hoping for a metroid, star fox or a f zero game announcment in the last direct they will have but cant get our hopes up

    • Christopher Bass

      whens the next direct?

    • Immallama22

What direct? The only other one I’ve hear of is the Pokemon direct tonight.

      • NkoSekirei

i heard theres another one with more wii u game announcements from other articles on here but i dont know wen it is gonna happen

    • Guest No. 3

What direct? All I heard was they’re doing a “wrap-up”.

  • Mr. J

WAIT a minute is there another direct that I never heard about.

    • Christopher Bass

That’s what I’m trying to find out

  • MujuraNoKamen

AHA!!! Awesome, the DKC dev was with a guy from NINTENDO not Retro, remember what I was saying about DKC being Retro’s side-project while they do metroid or a new IP or whatever, well this makes that seem much more likely, Nintendo can still pull something back.

    • Guest No. 3

I find it more likely that Retro just picked to do DKC first. I think they’re going to start Metroid now.

    • Fred

According to the Official Nintendo Magazine over there in Europe Retro had a hard time deciding between Donkey Kong and Metroid, but picked Donkey Kong because they felt that they had unfinished business

      https://twitter.com/ChandraONM/status/344518246973706241

      • MujuraNoKamen

        NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

        • Fred

DKCTF will be fun I’m excited. Get a grip, then go buy W101, Pikmin 3, Game & Wario, NSLU, 3D World, and DKCTF and you’ll be super happy!!!

          • MujuraNoKamen

I think all the games look fantastic but the quantity isn’t there. Mario Kart won’t be here by Christmas, nor will B2 or X. Wii U has enough platformers for now, it needed a Metroid or a new IP. Oh well, defo getting Watch dogs, SC, probably AC4, definitely SSB4, WWHD, Pikmin 3, MK8, and soon enough, DKCTR and SM3DW.

  • Nintendofreak

so when is the others main e3 direct?

    • Clel

      There’s another one coming?

      • Nintendofreak

they were supposed to make directs during e3 i just hope they didnt mean the devs directs

      • Levi Johansen

They still haven’t talked about Yoshi’s Yarn.

They should also make some Developer Directs for Super Luigi U and Game & Wario.

I was under the impression that Retro Strudios was going to make a game from another old IP.

Donkey Kong Country has already been brought back, so they might have been making two games: Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and a NEW ONE.

Or Maybe they ment that they’d make a new game, not a remake. Using the DK IP.

Aslo, they’re still to show us the connectivity between Wii U and 3DS in Super Smash Bros.

So, they do potentially have some stuff to fill another Nintendo Direct with. Not as much as the first one, but they could also show some of the biggest games more closely.

Maybe show some actual live game-play of Super Smash between Miyamoto, Reggie and Iwata. That’d be very cool.

  • Mochlum

I recommend everyone who was underwhelmed to watch these. They made me so much more excited. Especially the 3D World and Smash Bros ones.

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

      I’m already excited… can I take it? D:

      • Mochlum

For Smash Bros you may implode with a fangasm, but yes.

    • Clel

Yeah, I was kinda like meh for the Donkey Kong and 3D World, but then I watched them and people playing demos.

  • Zuxs13

Wait, how is it possible to play 12 person Mario Kart locally?

    • Fred

I wanted to know the same thing

      • Zuxs13

If they could link that many to the wii u possibly but the wii u can only handle 5 controllers at once.

        • ancientgamer

possible 6 when they release 2nd pad for system

          • Zuxs13

Don’t count on it. I doubt there will be many games that will ever support duel game pads and none that run at 60fps. Not unless the release a ‘memory upgrade card” or work some magic to the wii u clocks speeds , the system can not handle it.

          • ancientgamer

from what ive heard the system is already ready for 2 pad support. wish i could remember where i read it, it was a while ago, i dont see why the system couldn’t handle it, clock speeds are good n all but not most important, whats important is how much info is moved at those speeds

          • Zuxs13

I know it can do two gamepads but at a loss in frame rate.

          • Clel

A second Gamepad is POSSIBLE, but it’s a big strain on the system and makes its performance drop considerably. No way that they’re going to start distributing second Gamepads, not to mention it’s $110+

        • Fred

I wonder if they can do it with the 5 controllers plus 7 3DS

    • wober2

maybe 3ds’s? does that count for local?

    • disqus_ZqoxPZu0FG

probably 5 human players, and 7 AI bots.

    • Clel

      Perhaps LAN

    • Cyrus

He didn’t say locally, he just said 12 people multiplayer, so my guess is that the 12 counts for online. Local should be 4 (or 5).

      • greengecko007

He did say locally. His exact words were, “Up to a total of 12 karts can compete in a match in both local and internet modes”. 1:55 – 2:02

What he didn’t say is that all 12 of the local players would be human controlled. The past games have allowed for local play with 12 racers competing, but obviously 10-8 of those players were CPU controlled in the past. The gamepad may allow for up to 5 human players though.

      • Zuxs13

Yeah he did in the video he said: 12 player local and online. He may have not meant it that way but that’s how it came out.

  • MujuraNoKamen

E3 was abysmal… Again… I’ve stood up for Nintendo so much now thinking this would be when they blew all the doubt out of the water,
E3 2011 was tolerable but Wii U misfired on its reveal. E3 2012 was a disappointment but the Launch window games it showed were decent enough so
we said hey, it’ll be OK if they reveal their 1st party titans this in 2013 for release later that year. What do we get, a watered down Mario 3D Game (rehashing 3D land, a far cry from the console 3D Mario brilliance of the past), Kart won’t be out by
Christmas (the Killer app it needed last Christmas, not 2013 FFS!) WW
looks great but it seems it’s only a visual makeover, no Masterquest
version with new dungeons etc, More delays for Wii fit U (probably a big
seller) and… yeah… Where was everything else? a Pokemon RPG for Wii
U would have made up for it (a good portion anyway), Pokemon snap 2 for
U or 3DS would amazing, Pokemon Stadium 3? how about that new IP we’ve
waited 10 years for? Miyamoto said he’d be doing one, where is it. They completely forgot about Yarn Yoshi and SMT/FE (and the other 3rd party crossovers they talked about), What about Metroid? surely Retro’s
project is Metroid? No, no word a mature, hardcore IP instead Retro are
    wasted on effing Donkey Kong – I have a feeling that’s a side-project
and the rest is yet to come but there’s no reason why they shouldn’t
have shown it yet) That’s the best Ninty could do with retro freaking studios! another DK 2D platformer (we had one on Wii which was remade what last month!) All the 3rd Party games shown, were all old news,
nothing on the rumoured CoD Ghosts, GTA5, Destiny, MGS, Star Wars etc. No Price cut, no add-ons, no big system updates. I do blame the laziness of 3rd parties as well but we came here primarily to see what Nintendo could do to blow us away, we got nothing, WW looks Good and X looks insanely awesome, Bayonetta 2 looks good too but it didn’t quite live up to expectations, Smash Bros looks great and I’m pleasantly surprised it’ll be out in 2014, aside from that, an utter let down, I’m
thoroughly ashamed of Nintendo, they had no excuses this year and
they’ve disappointed. Should I wait another year for a good showcase of
them and their console? I won’t be fooled twice. This E3 was make or
break, they had there chance, they had time and power, they blew it.
All the games shown look great but not would they should be, they seem rushed/rehashed.

    • SmarterThanYou

Nope. I came to see what games were coming out, and that’s it. With the exception of Bioshock Infinite, no game since 2006 has ever been blown me away for any game console.

This E3 was nothing. Microsoft’s presentation was talking about Xbox One, avoiding every fan complaint or question about it, and giving out the inflated price that nobody liked (there was literally silence after the price was announced, and somebody had to start clapping about it after a couple of seconds to get the audience to react).

All Sony did was offer the PS3 again. This time, it has a 4. Nothing about the PS4 was amazing or unique. It was just a PS3 with better graphic capabilities. The only reason it gets any hype is because it didn’t make any of the mistakes Microsoft did with their console. People are hyped because you’re allowed to play used games on PS4? If Xbox never came up with that idea, then nobody would care about that feature for PS4. It’s only $400? If Xbox One was the same price, than nobody would care about that. There’s nothing great about the PS4. The only reason it seems it is because the Xbox One sucks that much.

All I wanted Nintendo to do is show me some footage of upcoming games, and that’s it. That’s what they did, and that’s all I needed. Get around to showing me more later.

      • Guest No. 3

        Well said.

      • greengecko007

I’m not sure what you’re trying to get at with your points

First, there is hype for the PS4 because, like you said, graphics and hardware are improved, which allows for much better games. Here’s the thing though, with over 140 games already confirmed for the PS4, and first party launch titles already confirmed, Sony is pushing games, which I think we can agree is the most important thing. There is no waiting 1-2 years to see AAA first party games on the new console (Wii U).

“It’s only $400? If Xbox One was the same price, than nobody would care about that.”

What is your point? If the Wii U was $500 like the Xbox One, nobody would care that the Xbox was expensive, right? If all the consoles were exactly the same, and they didn’t have their own pros and cons, nobody would care, right? This is so self explanatory, I’m not sure why you even bothered posting that. Of course people are going to be more excited for a console that looks more appealing.

I thought E3 was great this year.

Microsoft may have limited their audience severely, but they did reveal some good games like Halo 5 and some new exclusives, which was good.

Sony showed their new console and gave it an attractive price point, and revealed A LOT of games.

Nintendo showed a lot in their directs, and while it may not be everything a Nintendo fanboy thought would happen, I thought they revealed plenty of good games and showed lots of gameplay. The individual developer directs were great.

        • SmarterThanYou

If there is hype about the PS4 because of graphic improvement, then all that means is the gaming community truly is full of the stupidest people you can find. Most humans would be hyped over something greater than that. And no, it doesn’t allow for better games, retard. It just means that developers are going to create even more, unnecessary, undeveloped, vast worlds that ultimately become boring and redundant (Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Grand Theft Auto). They’re going to put in so much unnecessary crap, and forget about the essential of good game development – developing good games. For example, the retards who make Call of Duty were boasting about their graphical upgrades. What’s one of the big things they talk about? How they can put dirt under a characters fingernails… Really? When do you even look at the character’s fingernails in Call of Duty? Most characters wear gloves. These game developers are going to spend their time exploiting crap that in the ultimate conclusion of the game, will amount to nothing, and dumb people will attempt to use these as reasons why the games are good.

Sony is not pushing games. Sony is pushing the same garbage they’ve been pushing. None of the games they show look exceptional in anyway. They look like more or less the same stuff you’ve already gotten on a PS3. You’re just hyped about it because now they’re coming out on something you don’t currently own. And also, about the graphic and hardware upgrade, all that means is they’re going to do another Battlefield game where you do the same shtick you do in every Battlefield game, only now, the water looks a little better.

Bioshock Infinite came out recently, and it only plays at 720p on consoles, yet it is more beautiful than any of the 1080p games I’ve ever played, and I’ve played many. Not only that, but it is a much better game all around. It doesn’t need absolute realism, and huge open worlds where you can travel thousands of miles to the mountains in the distance. It just needed good game developers who know how to make a good game.

My point about the price is that the only reason it gets hyped, or why anything about the PS4 gets hyped, is because the competitor is offering less. Like someone I know pointed out, many people are making posts and talking about how great it is that the PS4 can play used games. So, the PS4 can do what consoles have usually been able to do… Why does anybody care? This is not something exciting or amazing about the console. The only reason they care is because a competitor is not offering it. Really, nothing this system does is better than anything a PS3 has to offer. It’s the same system. Viewing graphical upgrades and a larger open world as being a better game only makes you look like a simple individual.

Sony revealed new version of the same crap you’ve already gotten. If you believe that as a positive thing, then you are just a simple person, or you’re just easily satisfied. Pick one.

And please, don’t call Halo 5 a good game ever again. For the sake of humanity.

          • greengecko007

I understand that you are well within your rights to have and state your own opinion, but could you at least do so in a kindly manor?

“And no, it doesn’t allow for better games, retard. It just means that developers are going to create even more, unnecessary, undeveloped, vast worlds that ultimately become boring and redundant (Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Grand Theft Auto). ”

Calling me a retard doesn’t invalidate my opinion, it only discredits you. If better hardware allowing for bigger games, better engines, more stable games, and more content doesn’t equate to better games than I don’t know what does. Saying games are boring and redundant is your opinion. But it is a fact that the most recent installments of all those games you just listed are higher quality than their predecessors, whether or not you actually like the game is irrelevant.

Once again, your gripe with the PS4 getting hyped because it is more appealing to consumers is self explanatory. Yes, people are excited about not having used game DRM. Yes, if that wasn’t a current issue in the industry, it wouldn’t be hyped. But it is an issue, and that’s just the way it is.

“Sony revealed new version of the same crap you’ve already gotten. If you believe that as a positive thing, then you are just a simple person, or you’re just easily satisfied. Pick one.”

Please tell me more about how the 140 games confirmed for the PS4 are all just new versions of old games. A large number of those games are indie games that look quite interesting to me. The PS4 has shown a lot of games I want to play. Ironically, my reason is the exact same as yours.

“It just needed good game developers who know how to make a good game.”

I just want to play good games. It’s not that much different than you.

“And please, don’t call Halo 5 a good game ever again. For the sake of humanity.”

If you don’t like Halo, or sci fi shooters, that’s fine. But there are many people that do like it. Don’t expect to get respect from others just because you don’t play the bandwagon hate games like Halo, CoD, or Battlefield. Especially when you come across as somebody who has never even given them a chance (playing a game with a predetermined mindset that it will suck isn’t giving it a chance), otherwise you would know exactly how different the games are in the series.

        • bizzy gie

There’s a point I can actually agree on with you.

          • greengecko007

Pretty sure we have agreed several times in the past on other topics…

Just because we had a recent debate on how Sony and Microsoft don’t copy from Nintendo any more than Nintendo copies the companies that came before it doesn’t mean we both have completely different opinions on everything.

We just have one topic we have to agree to disagree on.

          • bizzy gie

I don’t think we’ve conversed prior to, but if we have I apologize for not remembering you.

      • bizzy gie

PS4 does have pretty impressive hardware and it looks like they improved it in places where it mattered. There’s still room for innovation with the touchpad if they don’t waste it like on the Vita. They’re also going to be indie developer friendly unlike Microsoft.

Plus this console will be easier to develop for and will have better UI than PS3. And instant download, cross game chat, and the messaging seem really cool. In addition, it seems like this is first time consumers will truly get a better product for less than its competition (Xbox One).

If I can’t convince you, maybe this cheesy video can: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OegYm1dM9g

    • Fred

Wonderful 101 will be great in a few months and I’m excited for Mario 3D world as I loved 3D Land

Also as for Retro doing Metroid https://twitter.com/ChandraONM/status/344518246973706241

You’re right X looks insanely awesome that alone should keep you happy.

    • Quicksilver88

I up voted you and voiced much of the same displeasures in a long post myself. We are not trolls or haters, we are the people who have been defending Nintendo greatly in these forums and we are the core fans and are just tired of rehashes and party games….they have so many great IPs and are just pissing them away….demote Iwata and get new management, work on the games WiiU and its fans deserve or just become a handheld company and let other consoles and devs develop your IPs into modern HD franchises!

      • MujuraNoKamen

Nintendo have let us all down, and themselves most importantly. This E3 was make or break, for a year people have criticised the lack of 1st party game announcements and now we’re seeing nothing of new IPs, Metroid, Starfox, 3D Mario is a waste, Kart won’t be out by the end of the year. Nintendo had no excuses, nowhere to hide this time, they were out done by XBone, that aint a joke! I don’t think Iwata should be removed/demoted, I think he’s amazing and the best man for the job, but everyone at Nintendo could/should have done more to get games out. They said Pikmin was delayed extensively because “HD games took more development” (No shit Sherlock) and they haven’t upped the ante on any other project.

        • Quicksilver88

Well I am in a slightly beter mood after watching the direct again on my WiiU and the developer conferences (which are a good idea regarldess of the content dissapointment). I will say the Pikman and W101 are looking awesome and I think I will be picking up both. 3 Ubi titles are impressing me with WD, SC, and Rayman. I hope they all look better on WiiU than ps360, but they way WD in particular looks on PS4 in unreal. It was also nice that COD Ghosts was finally somewhat confirmed. I am also think the DKC game looks good and I never played the Wii one or 3DS so I will likely get it. If the 2014 games make it in the 1st half next year (MK8, B2, and X) then that could be huge because the other consoles will be in their infancy and struggling with their post launch droughts so big hitters could help the WiiU sales. I am also looking forward to Dues EX redo and don’t care if it his other systems as long as WiiU version has gamepad features and better grafx. I think the best way for WiiU to sell well this xmas is for Nintendo to drop the price to $300 for pro and make a deal to bundle it with Disney Infinity. This would be a really useful ‘family’ pack and Infinity is going to be a DLC and Collectible cash cow for Disney so giving away the core for cheap to help Ninento push systems would be a smart move. Make that the ‘white’ bundle and then make the ‘black’ bundle with a pro controller and something like MHU or NFSMW which both sold poorly in the US and could use some love as they are great games for the more mature gamer. Bundles and price are the key and if Nintendo does not sell well this holiday then the 3rd party support from Ubi, Activision, Warner, and Disney is going to start drying up. I expect ps4 to sell out and xbone to struggle!

  • klenko

I hope they dont remove Lucas from brawl he was my favorite char and I’m really used to play as him

  • Potemkin

Wii Fit Trainer? I didn’t expect that.

I just hope Zero Suit Samus is still around :(

    • NkoSekirei

they should cause if their keeping the final smash ball samus should still transform to zero suit samus but im also want to see dark samus included in the roster as well that be awsome

      • Destructonator101

        PHAZON OVERRUN SAMUS

    • Luna Moonfang

I think Mr. Sakurai said that every character in Brawl would come back to every new entry in the series…well, at least i hope so.
Btw, the game seems much more quicker than Brawl, which is absolutely great!
The only thing that i wanted to know was about the “Story Mode” (Subspace Emissary, in SSBB).

      Luna, the Moonrider
      NOVA! NOOOOOOOVA!

      • Potemkin

I also noticed that the “Space Jumps” are no longer there. If they took out the f*cking tripping thing that will be great!

        • Luna Moonfang

          Agreed, haha

    • SeroReviews

The best things in life are unexpected ;)

  • Maxid765

Mario KArt 8 will be 60fps which is good, but just wondering will it be 1080p native

    • Mason742

Well according too nintendo last e3, only the launch title 1st party titles weren’t 1080p. Which means these should be.

  • BlackInferno

Dang, no Monolithsoft X Developer Direct. I was looking forward to that too :(

    • Fred

That would have been truly awesome. i’m guessing they would have if it was coming this year, but since it’s not we’ll have to wait to get that.

      • BlackInferno

Next year I guess. That game’ll probably be hitting around new Zelda time next year…hopefully new Zelda time. They need that for 2014 to really compete with the Wii U. NSMBU didn’t do much for the Wii U, I’m surprised they would use a 3D-NSMBU styled game to try to get the system going again. That type of game can only do so much

        • Destructonator101

so much as in not much. BUT on another topic…
THAT X TRAILER WAS FREAKIN AWESOME!!!

        • Forbsz

I predict the Mario game we were shown is also not the only 3D Mario game Nintendo have been working on it seemed rush and not like a full Mario game just wait and see my friend!

          • BlackInferno

I wish, but I have a feeling not. I think we’ll get another one in 2 years like Galaxy 2 and it’ll probably be a mind blowing game, but this NSMB/3D Super Mario combo game just doesn’t have the presentation that Nintendo really needs their Mario game to have. I was interested in the 3DS version, and I thought it looked awesome and original for that, but reusing that formula for the Wii U game just does nothing for me

  • Jack5221

NEVER in my life did I ever think that Mario Kart would be more innovative than a 3D Mario Game. Im Excited!!!!

  • JWHO

I hope Nintendo has more for us in the course of the week!

    • Mr. J

      Iknow

  • Christopher Acuna

Tell you what, Nintendo may have not wow’d me as much as I was hoping for but I am still excited to have a WiiU this holiday season! Along with my preordered PS4 I am a happy gamer!

  • Superstick98

That Nintendo Direct actually made me pretty happy. I know that the big boys such as mk8 and super smash bros don’t come until 2014 but at least now that gives me enough time to play Wind Waker HD, Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World, and plenty of Ubisofts games too! So excited! :D I just have to start saving…

  • Sonic

I don’t understand, why is there no mention (not in this post, but at all) of Oddworld Abe’s Odysee: New n’ tasty?

    • Destructonator101

      Oddworld…
When I was a little kid I saw that guy once when my dad was playing it on his PC and had nightmares for ages. When I saw that thing again but with far better graphics, it made feel like a fuckn child. It looks cool, but I won’t download that thing to my Wii U.

      • Sonic

        Why?
I used to find it scary, but when i look at it,it’s not at all.
Although… i did find stuff like Reaverbots scary…

    • jay

I thoguht sony owned the IP. I was like “what the?….”

  • sd

Mario Kart and X look pretty good. Mario Kart actually looks better than I thought, I never expected to think, wow that actually looks good. 2014 release date is disappointing though. To get a new install base and increase sales they really need to slam home the games and flood the market a bit.
My other concern is that a huge amount of top quality games are all very similar. Quite a few platformers in only a few months. Might not buy Rayman after all if donkey kong, sonic and mario are being released.

    • ZProdigy17

One question. 5 players local Mario Kart? If so sign me up.

      • sd

I think that’s the case, how many gamepads though? It would be great if you could use more than one. Disappointed its not out this year, but that’s because I want it now.

  • Joyous Killer
    • great deku tree

I was in stitches watching this haha and it’s exactly how I feel, going to be ps4 and wii u for me this gen I’m not a one console fan like most people got ps3, 360 and wii in my house and every console from each company for as long as I remember with the exception being the ps vita but definitely put off of the xbox one with all those restrictions…

  • wober2

Seeing megaman makes me really want a new megaman game! Either new legends, zero, or traditional megaman. Please!

  • SuperShyGuy

I hope the trainer will be like DoA style and they’ll make her bewbs jiggle.

  • Jason Matias

This is such a damn disappointment! I got the WII U on launch day, been sucking up all the mediocrity this “console” has had so far, supporting it and just telling myself lies, because i love Nintendo and all they have done in the past, but enough is enough, and i kno im gonna get a lot of heat for this cuz a lot of you still want to be blind at the fact that Nintendo has played us for suckers with this “console” they lied to us from the get go, half on the launch titles they promised have still to come out, then they slap us across the face with this pathetic excuse of a E3, they said they were giving us a 3D Mario, and straight up hyped it up to pretty much give us another damn remake, say what u will, but that damn game is a sorry excuse for a new title is just a polished version of the 3DS game, the luigi game another damn hustle, mario katt, smash bros. look promising but again with the damn promise and no deliver (well have to wait over a year for those, youll see) and wii fit trainer, SERIOUSLY! You couldnt have found a biggest way to just tell your loyal fans and supporters (pretty much the only people willling to put down the money for a damn U) “fuck you! But we just dont care anymore!” With that said i know im gonna get a lot of stupid comments about how im not really a nintendo fan ect. But no im just done getting raped by this assholes!

    • Larry Howell

No, not going to say you’re not a true Nintendo fan, but you have unrealistic expectations and are just blowing up because you’re mad at Nintendo for not meeting what you want from them. It is a 3D Mario, and while in the same style as 3DLand, it has added multiplayer support along with different characters with different attributes, and other features Nintendo is generally known to leave out of initial reveals. The Luigi game is initially DLC for NSMB, which Nintendo has already stated, and they said they’d offer a standalone disc for the game as well. Everyone knew that (why you didn’t is your fault) and so there should be no surprises there. Mario Kart and Smash look great, but like all Nintendo games, they take their time with the development of them. Not exactly surprising either. But whatever. You’re apparently fed up to the point of quitting Nintendo, so be on your way.

      • Jason Matias

Unrealistic!? Dude for what we payed for this garbage, it would be fitting that they did more than what they did, with mario, and yes i kno game development ect takes time, but they been working on the wii u since last E3 so i think thats plenty of time, if they wasnt ready to give us anything good for the first 2 years they shouldve waited to release the damn thing! Last E3 they even teased us with a zelda game and what do we get? WW HD? LOL get the hell outta here nintendo lol

        • jay

If it’s garbage why did you pay for it?

I certainly never pay for garbage.

I hear this crap at every e3. You want Nintendo to show you every damn game they’re working on.

THEY WERE GONNA SHOW A NEW ZELDA TODAY
but pulled it because they wanna work on it more. If they wanted they could have unveiled 20 new games but with release dates like 2015 that would have gotten you pissed either way!!

          • Jason Matias

Why i paid for it? Because like i said i got it on launch date, because like i also said before i believed the load of bullshyt they fed us.

    • Quicksilver88

I am actually going to up vote you amd mostly agree…….I too havebowned every Nintendo system since NES and GB…..I love Nintendo and have dendended them a lot in these forums for the last few months. This direct and E3 is a real downer. I mean they say new 3D Mario comind and then its a 3DS rehash. Retro says ‘working on the game no one will believe we are doing’ and then it a DK rehash. Wind Waker……GC rehash. Three party games in first year with Nintendoland, Wario, and Wii Party. None of this really says nextgen or show off WiiU in a ‘modern’ light. The best looking stuff Bayonetta2, X, Mario Kart is all 2014 which could be 18 months away. My only hope is that the Mario team is really working on a true 3D HD Mario, that Retro is really working on something impressive and that these things are fillr to have something this year. Nintendo is just failing so bad at giving its core (not casual or kids) gamers what we want. I want a 3D DK, a 3D Mario, a new starfox, new fzero, new zelda, new excitbike 64, new waverace, FExSMT, Mario Golf HD, Metriod hd….maybe we get these on WiiU but when 2015 and beyond. I mean Nintendo put next to nothing out on Wii since 2010 what the Hell have they been doing. They have a real identity crisis right now…the casual gamer is gone and all these handheld games need to be left to 3DS. I honestly believe Iwata needs to be fired or sent back to development and they need new leadership. They are out of touch and wasting their vast library of incredible IPs and credibility. One E3 is not going to sync them but continuing down this path is……The only thing that I look forward to this year is W101. A few of the Ubi games looked OK but looked so much better on Ps4. Sad times for Nintendo and WiiU

      • iceazeama

yeah seriously man, its just pathetic.” what have they done since 2010 it was dead since then” exactly. they could of at least gave their core audience fatal frame, earth seeker dragon quest x, tales of graces, another code r, captain rainbow, zangeki no reigleiv and more!!!!! pisses me off more is that the 3 rainfall games wouldnt of made it over here without gamestop seeing demand in xenoblade making a deal with nintendo for gamestop exclusive release and xseed for bringing THS and PD!!!!! really nntendo why not just publish those from the start, ive only been waiting for some games. really those games could of pleased there core fans but instead they leave us with no games!!!!!! now this with the wii u, tell me, why would i want to stay with nintendo after getting bull shitted on and lied to for this long?????? really, nintendo is my favorite of the 3 so dont confuse me as a hater but this for this long, im not going to take it anymore, nintendo is dead to me.

        • Quicksilver88

Well I am not going that far and I do think MK8 is going to rock especially if it is 12 player online with leader boards and allowing the video posting on MiiVerse is a cool idea. I also think bringing better drawing tools and picture attatchments to Miiverse is a nice move. Next year when we get Bayonetta 2 and X that will go a long way twoards helping the ‘hardcore’ gamer. I am a multiplatform type but XBone has just turned me off and will likely be done with M$ after 10+ years of xbox gaming. PS4 honestly looks awesome and price point is sweet @ $400. I will likely get in 2014 as there is just so much good current gen content to play this year and WiiU will have some things to play this year and early next. I also have a kick ass MPC which I rarely game on but it is connected to my big HDTV and I am considering picking up some multiplats on it while I wait to go to ps4. I guess I am going to be patient and hope Nintendo improves WiiU sales catering to the more casual and that we their core supporters eventually (likely 2015 and beyond) get the games we want like Metroid, 3D Mario, New Zelda, Star Fox, F-zero and all the other great things they could make if they get their heads out of their asses and step up. I guess the biggest dissapointment is seeing them wast development time and resources on games that really are best suited for 3DS (like DKC and MW3D). For me it would have helped so much if they had just shown more ZeldaU, whatever we know Retro is really working on, and SMTxFE which is my most wanted game, even though we have never seen anything about it other than a teaser. Doing MK8 right is big for them as far as online and social features and could parlay well into a modern f-zero or wave race. For now my WiiU sits ideal whlie I go start Last of Us this week but Luigi DLC out at the end of the month and hopefully Dues EX gets here soon.

    • sd

I have to agree with a lot of what you say. The games they have been advertising and saying were coming late 2013 are now 2014. They are screwing this up big time. They need games now, not in the future. They also need a lot of good games to encourage a wide user uptake of this console and it isn’t happening. Also where are the new games. When they have released this lot of games what is next? Show these games, give release dates that are this year and THEN tell us what you will be doing after that.

They also need a huge amount of games to be exclusives and released around the time the PS4 and xbummed are released to encourage thos unsure of what to buy to buy a Wii U. Windwaker failed with the game cube, dont make it fail with the Wii U as well.

      • Jason Matias

Thanks! I just find what nintendo has done disrespectful to us real nintendo fans ( not the fanatical ones that still find excuses for nintendo on here) we paying customers and theyre pretty much telling us they dont care and see us as stupid people that will drop money on whatever crap they put their name on (as obviously theres still people like that judging by the heat were getting on here)

      • ItzameyaToad

The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and Sonic Lost World will all be launching this year. Why do people expect them to push out all there big games? if they do that then what will you say when there are no games coming out to compete with the other consoles? The fact is they have plenty of games to hold people over now as it is and with all the new games coming out this year they will have a large library of games. Yeah it is a pain that we have to wait until next year but I am fine with waiting because I know it is a normal cycle for consoles to save the big guns.Besides we still have a few days until E3 is over who knows they may announce more games in developement/coming out this year.

        • sd

My point wasn’t that the games are coming next year, it is more the fact that Nintendo keeps saying they are coming this year and then delays them. Their previous directs implied they would be released this year so it was misleading. I can wait for X and bayonetta ( even though they implied this year as well) If they had said Mario kart this year donkey kong next year then I would have been very happy. I really like the Wii U, i am just getting concerned it will actually fail. I really hope this is not the case. But they need to stop delaying games and get them out. They also need exact release dates for this year and next.

Also the games being released are mostly going to be great, but they are all very similar. Space these games out and release the ones we don’t have like mario kart or ssb. Dont delay these games and then release games that are going to compete against each other, (luigi, rayman, donkey kong, mario, sonic). All great games, all being released within a few months. But would you play them all back to back?

To me the Wii U is great, but if it doesn’t take off then quickly it is doomed. In Australia many shops are not even stocking the new games now so I cant even pop out to buy them that easily.

          • ItzameyaToad

I understand what you mean but it is normal for Nintendo to push release dates back and when the games come out almost everyone forgets they where delayed because it has such great quility. I think they need to stop giving us release dates if they think they cant make them, for example they shouldn’t give us the release dates of Bayonneta 2,MarioKart 8 or Smash Bros until they are 100% sure they can bring those games out at that time. I personally wouldn’t/wont buy every single game that comes out this year(don’t have alot of money and don’t find all the games interesting). The games might all be the same/similar but they are GAMES none the less and people bitch so much about it having a lack of games. The games coming out for Wii U IMO will help pick up sales so don’t be silly saying it will be doomed if sales don’t pick up. Really for a console to be doomed many factors must come in to play we have yet to see so don’t worry about it. This year we will get a great line up of games and probably towards the beggining of next year when PS4 and XO start picking up steam/excitement Nintendo will release it’s heavyweight games.

  • Rob Lucci

If you didn’t like Nintendo’s E3 then your only hope for something may be at Tokyo Game Show.

    • Jason Matias

Oh well, the sad part is nobody will even give me a quarter of what i paid for this damn thing!

  • Destructonator101

Wont Nintendo have a second direct later with some announcements and stuff?

    EVERYBODY LISTEN UP.

The Wii U is not dead, the xbone is though. When Retro’s project hits, it will be epicly insanely awesome. Because there hasn’t been any news on what Retro is up to for ages! All we’ve got is rumour. Their last project was DKC wasn’t it? Which therefore means there has been a huge gap between finishing and starting the development of games, or they are going to kick ass with an awesome new metroid, starfox or F-zero.

    Never fear…

    • Henry M. Aucaquizhpi

retro made the new donkey kong country returns the one that just got announced

      • Destructonator101

Donkey Kong returns was not just announced.

        • Henry M. Aucaquizhpi

tropical freeze sorry i would assume u can put two and two together sorry…..

          • Destructonator101

            Soz

    • ItzameyaToad

They probably have two groups at Retro working on DKC Tropical Freeze and Metroid or some new IP. I also could have swore they said there would be several Nintendo Directs one being a few weeks before E3 the other at E3 and one or two more towards the end of E3. If that is true I could see some big games announced.

  • http://people.ign.com/returnofthetruth2 ReturnoftheTruth2

Nintendo refuses or are unable to get with the times. GTA 4’s race takes out Mario Kart and it is more realistic and more fun. I just hope they don’t put the nitro in GTA V or that will ruin it!

    • Luffy

the only true to thing you said is there is that its more realist… but do you honestly think that mario kart should be more realist?

      • http://people.ign.com/returnofthetruth2 ReturnoftheTruth2

More so than what it has been. Cartoony graphics I expect on an SNES, but on a Wii U, I at least expect organic things to look real. You can still have it cartoony with realism of the materials in the game. It just looks like more of the same and Nintendo is too scared to break the mold. This is how companies bite the dust – they refuse to grow.

        • ItzameyaToad

Then why do you insist on bashing something by comparing it to a game that is intended to look real and always has been intended to look real? Why not just gather up what you want to say like you did here and say it like you did here instead of leaving a comment that 1:pisses people off by the tone of the comment and 2: by pissing off people it removes the potential of someone seeing your point of view.
IMO I think they are sticking with something that works and people like. I mean look at Brawl compared to Melee there is a big difference in the quality of the graphics/characters. The same applies if you compare Mario Kart Wii to Mario Kart 8, the worlds look more viabrant brighter, more detail etc. I think when looking at franchises like Mario people shouldn’t expect a huge leap like photo-realism because Mario is a cartoon like character and always will be.It’s like saying Kratos from God of War should look more cartoony it just wouldn’t fit. I believe though that improvements such as better looking worlds, characters etc. is what Nintendo has been and is continuing to push.

    • Petri

Did this guy get his account stolen?
Or has he ran out of copy/paste material.

  • Brandon Gardner

I have always been a avid Nintendo supporter but I am not impressed with this direct. I was expecting ton of surprises, teases, more detail on what the Gamepad controller can do but didn’t get any of that. Mario 3d world should have been a launch title for the system. I was expecting the gameplay to be a little different in smash brothers and I feel like mario kart is a rehash of the 3ds version. Nintendo could have at least teased what was in development just like square did with Kingdom Hearts 3. It doesnt make any since for Donkey Kong to be released when there was just one for the 3ds. Its like the same damn game. Everything that comes out on 3ds is coming to wii u just HD graphics. Let’s pray and hope that nintendo has something up their sleeves

    • GmailIsDown

they are playing safe right now, to please their core gamers. this kind of classic gaming can only be found on a Nintendo console. with Sony and Microsoft each just announcing their (hardware-wise) vastly more powerful consoles, it is understandable that they want to play safe for the time being.

i really wish they make more games that can really utilize the gamepad. i’m still waiting for the announcement of Fatal Frame Wii U edition. it would be a killer game with the gamepad.

hopefully they can still commit to this console.

  • Stephen Davis

Nintendo once again you push peripherals and attachments that you expect us to need and want. Just like the motion controller plus. Then they ask developers to use them, and fail to really implement them themselves. All my friends said not to trust Nintendo after the WII but I gave it another chance. Why do they do this. Come on we all have waited and waited for something. This was to be their golden hour, now they say wait till 2014? REALLY? What company releases a system and doesn’t have games lined up for it? This is appalling, and its causing me to consider for first time, if I should have kept my 360. Guys this is really grave news. I can’t believe it, I really can’t. Its like giving someone a new computer and then saying, you can’t turn it on or use it till 2 years…man wait till this hits the news fans :( Nintendo for the first time I have lost faith in you, yet I feel you don’t care

    • Stephen Davis

Guys you can thumb me down all you want, but you know this is true. The problem is we keep being tolerant of it, and when are we going to say enough is enough. Ya know? Its not right what Nintendo is doing, thumb me down all you want, but you know this is true.

      • GmailIsDown

with the vastly more powerful PS4 and Xbox One rolling out in 2014 it will be more difficult for them to compete.

        • ItzameyaToad

The Xbox One shipped alot of its gamers to two camps, 1:Nintendo and 2:PS4 that being said I don’t see them having a hard time competing with Xbox One.Unless Microsoft scales down some of it’s policies/restrictions I don’t see it competing, as far as taking potential sales from Nintendo. PS4 on the other hand will give the Wii U competetion but I personally think the Wii U will be able to compete and have an edge over PS4.

I think this gen of consoles will see much more competition between Sony and Nintendo and it will be a much closer generation in terms of content provided on both systems while the power of both systems will take a back seat.

      • Luffy

we are thumbing you down because we do not agree with what you are saying. for a first year, i havent seen much console do better. ps3 was dry at first, so was 360, ds, wii, ps2, etc. tell me, what console had so much more great game on its first year?

        • Jeffery02

I think people are forgetting that the Wii U is still fairly new. For me at least, I feel like I’ve had mine forever. I have gotten quite a lot of use out of it though and Miiverse is the greatest thing the Wii U could ever have. I own 5 physical Wii U games and 1 digital which is the most amount of games that I have ever had for a system within 6 months of launch. I usually don’t really start buying games until 1 or 2 years when the older games lower in price. So all in all it’s not a perfect launch, but it’s far from a failure.

The 3DS had a pretty bad launch, but look at it now. It is one of the most popular systems out. Stephen is disappointed in Nintendo, so sucks to be him. I, however, find great joy (and some impatience) in the games that they have announced. I want to complain about the wait but in reality, it’s only because I want the games now. The long wait for these games btw is also why these games end up having such amazing quality, so I think that Nintendo has done an amazing job so far.

In summary Stephen, I’m sorry you lost sight of real quality as opposed to quantity but I hope you (and many others) can find your way back.

      • Larry Howell

I haven’t thumbed you down, but I do have to wonder how with all the games that are currently out, you cannot keep yourself entertained with the system? I currently own… probably about 15 games or so (retail, downloadable, VC), and I’m still playing through most of them. I still have challenge modes to complete, storylines to finish, buddies’ scores to crush, and then rub in their faces, etc. Have you truly become so incredibly bored of what games have already been offered? Terrible problem with the current generation of gamers. No patience, no time taken to savor the games that have been crafted. Folks just wanna buy a game, blaze through it, trade it in, and jump on the next popular thing that has come out.

  • jiggs

i cant believe how many complainers there are out there. i guess when you’ve built up unrealistic expectations, you’re bound to be disappointed. all of these games look fun to me, and i can see myself spending a lot of time and money on my wii u in the upcoming year. nintendo did a great job of pulling together a number of games that can appeal to a wide audience in a time when they need it most. not to mention they’ll be holding down the lowest price point of the three, which is critical. next year, the wii u will have established a solid library, sales should be improved, and they’ll be able to focus on creating more of the innovative titles that got them to where they are today. people will always have something to complain about, but as long as the games keep coming, i’m content.

  • Mr. J

Wait so is the retro project just DONKEY KONG…………. i feel so empty inside.

    • Starfoxguy

E3 isn’t over yet. They may reveal more games this week.

  • Mr. J

Sorry just thought this was funny

  • zerooooo

Wow I was pretty upset with nintys E3 but theys vids changed my thoughts, great job ninty!

  • Link Slayer

No wonder why Nintendo skipped the big e-3 press conference. There direct was lame and predictable. There was nothing that got me excited. Most of the good games I Want to play are 2014. Man Nintendo Needs to step it up what has happend to them!

I agree partially with you mainly the part for the games you want to play, and all of these games are 2014 release, same goes for me so sadly even after this E3 I see no reason to get a Wii U later this month, maybe I’ll take a look for it in October but unlikely before that. I’ll stick with my 3DS for now.

Virtual Console desperately needs some E3 love.

I hope everyone sees I don’t know if you know that Retro Studios have hired people who have worked on multiplayer shooters such as SOCOM also they have hired Naughty Dog staff who have worked on the uncharted series about a year ago now you think why would they hire staff like that if they were just working on donkey kong well their not just working on 1 game they have another game in the works don’t ask me when it will be shown but trust me Donkey Kong isn’t the only game they’ve been working on I predict the Mario game we were shown is also not the only 3D Mario game Nintendo have been working on it seemed rush and not like a full Mario game just wait and see my friends!

Is anybody else reading the breaking news articles about Sony popping up everywhere? Seems they meant “only” first party titles are free of DRM, ALL 3rd party titles subject to the same DRM that Microsoft is employing. Anybody else seeing this???

    • RockGod

It’s right on Yahoo homepage, article by Forbes… reads: Sorry, 3rd party PS4 games to include DRM after all… I can’t believe no one else has noticed this yet…

      • Larry Howell

I thought I read an article that stated that DRM for 3rd party games were left up to the publishers.

        • RockGod

It Is… 3rd party games on PS4 will basically be like ALL games on XBONE. Why would they not include all this stuff on PS4, when they already have it set up that way for XBONE, and now the news slipped that PS4 is designed to be able to do everything XBONE does. This is def going to hurt Sony’s image after what they said at E3…

I dont think Mario 3d World is the combination of all mario best ideas. I like the ones you collect stars, cause the game feels… idk… greater? The flag post is more for new super mario. I like to go slowly to a level discovering things not just quickly run through it, thats my opinion.

    • Pikachief

That’s what the coins are for but I agree, this form of game is much more linear, and I do prefer the stars / shines design.

I agree with you there. I love Super Mario 3D land, but to be honest, not nearly as much as 64, sunshine, or Galaxy. It definitely a step up from the New Super Mario Bros. series because it was something we never saw before. But I like courses in my big Mario games, a lot of areas to explore, and a lot of secrets to find in them. These levels are going to be disposable. I liked 64 and Sunshine’s levels, each one completely unique, memorable, and more or less essential to the game overall.

I’m not sure if I see this as a game that takes Mario in a new direction. Not like the previous ones, from 64 to Galaxy did. Will it be fun? Heck yes, it will, you get to play as Princess Peach! But if they consider this taking the series in a new direction, then I’m not sure I like the direction they’re taking it.

And it definitely doesn’t look like the ultimate culmination of all the 3D Mario games, from what we were shown so far. Maybe the ultimate culmination of all the bonus levels in 3D Mario games :p

Now that my huge wave of disappointment of what to me was an incredible underwhelming Nintendo Direct is over, I am getting excited about these games!!

(after what Sony and Microsoft showed, Wii U versions of 3DS and Wii games, No Zelda, no Metroid, no new IPs, was definitely just depressing. I was expecting new risks and new big things like most console Mario 3D platformers and Kart racers bring! None of that. They took the most playing it safe games they’ve made, then used that for their consoles to play it even more safe. They’re loads of fun, but I was expecting that Nintendo flare, which was not delivered. Smash bros. is amazing though, and the 3DS one looks great)

    LMFAO!!!!
So the big new Mario game foe the Wii U was just another lame rehash of Mario on the 3ds?LMFAO!!!
Seriously Nintendo you have become a joke!!
With Sony pricing the PS4 at only $399 only $90 bucks more than a Wii U deluxe the Wii U is finished!!!
No zelda tease,no 3rd party, no metroid,no new franchises instead the same old rehash after rehash!!
The ps4 launch line up is %80 new IP’S, with its price and upcoming games the ps4 will easily win this gen!!

with people complaining that all of the games should be released this year do you really want to play all of these awesome games this year then have nothing next year? seriously man these aren’t your crap annual released cod games they need to be spread out and take lots of time to develop into lasting quality games that you’ll play over and over again and still love because they’re so fun. personally I’m glad smash bros. and MK8 are coming out next year because first of all I don’t even have a wii u so I haven’t even played the launch games yet or the games coming this year. besides aren’t there more Nintendo directs this week? who knows there may be some other games announced personally I hope that retro is working on another game besides donkey kong which looks great don’t get me wrong I’ll get it. maybe another 3d Mario as well? a bit far fetched I know but I really want a 3d game like Mario 64 and Mario sunshine where you go into different worlds and collect shines/stars instead of coins like the 3ds game. hopefully I’m right and more games will be announced since so far Nintendo is playing it a bit safe at the moment.

  • bryan

i love how ‘lame’ the presentation was at this E3…shows how invested they are in the new Zelda game!!!!!!!!!!

Guys watch the pikmin 3 one, Shigeru Miyamoto really makes me want to make cry, thinking about his retirement soon…

I think the Wii Fit character in SSB is hilarious lol. I just hope that she doesn’t potentially take the place of another character.
