Hacker shows Gamecube games running in vWii on Wii U

One of the top questions we get in our email inbox weekly asks when Nintendo will release Gamecube games for the Wii U virtual console. We don’t know that until Nintendo announces it, but one hacker has managed to use VWii on the Wii U in order to get Gamecube games running. Since it’s not possible to use Gamecube games directly on the Wii U without an attachment, he did the next best thing, using a PS3 controller. The hacker mentions sound problems for the ROM which is why the music is different, but this proves that the Wii U is certainly capable of running Gamecube games.

Great. Keep doing this and Nintendo might be forced to use DRM too. Great job hacker. We’re so proud of you.

    • Morits Lian

      >might be forced
      Might.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

        still too much a chance

    • Archiq09

but gamecube controller? how he can play with gamecube game?

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

it’s gotta start somewhere. you saw how Nintendo got over LPers (I was in favor of that though)

    • Ben Kapferer

But wouldn’t it be Nintendo’s fault, since they would be the one implementing DRM?

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

they wouldnt have to if people didnt hack their systems

        • greengecko007

Hacking their systems to play old games that Nintendo has failed to put on their virtual console, so even if the person bought the game, they still wouldn’t be making any money off them?

  • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

We’ll certainly see GameCube virtual in one of those Nintendo Direct. Reggie wanted it so bad, no ? :)

  • Ben Ifits

Microsoft: sorry but the Xbox one can only play Xbox one games and cannot transfer any downloaded games from your previous Xbox 360. But you can transfer your gamer score! :D

    Meanwhile on wii u…..

    • Alestar

Yes, because playing games is all about gaining virtual points that have no real use to them. How very generous of Microsoft indeed.

      • Bob Charlie

Hey now! My xbox gamer score was so high that I got a whopping 3% off my yearly xbox live membership…That 3% doesn’t even compare to N’s Deluxe Digital Program combined with Club Nintendo, however!

  • Laud

Or this could be incredibly fake and the hacker is really just someone who knows how to cut and replace video?

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

      It’s possible.

      • Laud

        Check it out Ashley!

I managed to go through a back door and send a trojan virus to the mainframe of the Wii U firewalls and now I can openly open their ports without needing to override any security codes placed by Reggie.

[Edit: Some people aren't getting the joke :(... Or maybe they are and just don't think it's funny, that might be true too.]

        • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

          Heheh, well done. :P

      • peeer

I highly doubt that… Knowing crediar (the one behind this video), he aint that kind of hacker to fabricate fakes like that.

    • TheyCallMeDan

It’s more than likely that this is legit, seeing how the Wii U can play Wii games, Which could play GC games because all of them used the same hardware architecture… So it wouldn’t surprise me that the Wii U can run GC games with ease.

The only issue is the GC controller had Analogue triggers and a lot of games rely on that functionality, which explains why he used a PS3 controller since that had analogue triggers.

      • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

He explains in the YouTube comments that he used a PS3 controller because it was the only USB HID-compatible controller he had available.

    • greengecko007

Considering the video is by Crediar, who is a semi well known hacker, I’m going to say it’s legit. Notice on the Wii menu how smooth the pointer navigates on the screen, that looks far more like a controller controlled pointer, not something done by motion controls. If you still need convincing, you can always take the time to check out his youtube channel, twitter account, etc., before questioning if someone is legit or not (well, as legit as a hacker can be).

      • Laud

Or you can connect a wii classic controller to the Wii mote.

  • Jim Wanstall

Nintendo are notoriously slow , you only have to look at the virtual console to see this , but in saying that I don’t want to knock Nintendo in any way , except the wii was and is a complete joke , its hacked to death and has ruined my online gaming experience for the past 4 years , Mario kart hacked to death and so are most games so i don’t condone any kind of hacking , they completely ruin what is good about gaming .

Hopefully we shall see game cube games soon , lets wait and see what happens at E3

    • Dimitra Giorgiou

soo.. xbox 360 isnt hacked to bid? i thought cod bo1 isnt even playable now in the 360.. what about ps3? Cod Wow And Bo1 are unplayable with all the hackers. Dont complain about this shit, Hackers are everywhere.

      • greengecko007

I still play the original Black Ops quite frequently online. I kind of like the metagame better than Black Ops II. It’s definitely playable. I’ve only ran into “hackers” that cheated to get the highest prestige emblem or unlock the colored clan tags…

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

The Wii U should be capable of running GC games directly with little to no emulation. If the disc drive can take the discs then it is just natively disabled in the Wii menu much as Nintendo did with later versions of the Wii.

    • Baum 「ツリー」

Its disc drive CAN’T read the GC gamediscs. he uses ROMs for his programm/hack.

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Which is what the changed when the Wii dropped backwards compatibility correct?? They made it a standard drive that could not grab the smaller discs.

        • Matt

The drive was the same they only removed the controller ports. Someone on YouTube took their blue one apart and attached the controller ports from a white original Wii and his blue one was completely backwards compatible game discs and all!

    • Ben Kapferer

Nintendo probably removed GC compatibility so that they could cut costs by using a convential slot drive (that only accepts full-size discs), as well as removing the GC controller and memory ports.

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

That I understand. I was just stating that the Wii Menu should be able to run the games natively if the hardware to support the discs/controllers was available.

    • tronic307

It’s the same CPU architecture as Gamecube; IBM just keeps clocking it higher and adding cores. I hope Nintendo smartens up and ditches IBM next time around. I heard the IBM deal was for three consoles and may not be renewed.

AMD plans to produce 32-core ARM64 based Opterons next year. I hope AMD starts making ARM-based APUs for consoles. Every Nintendo handheld since GBA uses ARM, so their developers have a lot of experience with it. If not, Nintendo can go x86 like Sony and Microsoft, but with a far more powerful future AMD APU.

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

If they do I hope they do not pull a Microsoft or a Sony and give a big FU to the gamers.

But in the end the PowerPC chip is not a bad chip but I understand why the move to X86 was made. It just sucks because now you have to keep or purchase each console to enjoy the library of current and future games. It is different IMO to drop the compatibility when no new games are being made for the platform anymore. But if new games are still being regularly made for the previous gen console it is really nice to have that compatibility in the new console so you do not have to flip between consoles to enjoy recent games.

  • david jarman

That’s nice and all, but I want to play gamecube games on the wii u side of things.

    • val berger

yeah I just wish they had prepared the wiiu to be be able to play those GCN discs. would’ve been soooo nice. Now I have to store my old wii for that.

  • val berger

Why shouldn’t gamecube games run on the WiiU? It’s the same architecture after all, so of course it’s gonna work.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Watching the video makes me wonder why Nintendo want to upgrade the graphics here. It look absolutley gorgeous the way it looked on the cube.

    • greengecko007

I wouldn’t really say that they are remaking Wind Waker to update the graphics, which have only been marginally upgraded. Nintendo said that they are giving us this to try and give us something to do while we wait on whatever the Zelda Wii U title they are working on. There is also reason to believe that they will add more content to the game, like the missing dungeons, since all other Nintendo remakes included new content. And obviously, they want our money, but what company doesn’t?

      • crocodileman94

Capcom? They haven’t made a new megaman game in ages.

        • greengecko007

Yeah they killed Mega Man off. I think they realized that releasing the same game every year, with small differences wasn’t going to work for them anymore.

          • Ben Kapferer

Let’s hope Nintendo doesn’t do the same for Mario once the NSMB series wears out (though Nintendo probably won’t).

            [EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION]

          • Magnus Eriksson

Not yet, but it could be if they use the same formula to much more. NSMB Ds, NSMBWii, NSMB2, NSMBU, NSLU is enough for a while IMO.

          • Evang3los

Capcom should make mega man with super metroid mechanics. I know it would be ripping off nintendo, but I would play it

          • Alexander T. Cardosi

megaman zx on the DS kinda did that already did that.

          • Andreas Sunde

I want them to finish the Mega Man X reboot made by some of the people who made Metroid Prime. First Person, looked awesome. But no, they cancelled it. (-.-)

      • Magnus Eriksson

Well I think the updated version looks just great too, and Im one of those happy souls that never played it. So it is only win for me. It was more a statement about the timeless style. Its a game that have been aging good.

        • Evang3los

You are in for a treat. Wind walker in my opinion it’s the best Zelda game ever created

          • Magnus Eriksson

Ive heard so. Cant almost wait :D

        • greengecko007

If you aren’t immediately put off by the art style, you will most likely love the game. Wind Waker has an amazing story that provides a lot of allusions to Ocarina of Time while also being a completely new tale.

I found the dungeon designs to be nice and varied, but fair warning, one of the dungeons does have a “Water Temple” like design, featuring a large middle part of the dungeon and several rooms branching away from the center of the dungeon. It’s not as tedious as the Water Temple, but the layout can be confusing the first time you do it, especially if you don’t beat it in one play period.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

A lot of people missed out on Wind Waker the first time it came around. Some where turned off on the cartoon like art style and others were just too young or did not get into the series until they played another Zelda title>

I also hear Microsoft is re-releasing Fable with updated graphics for the 360 for similar reasons. Sometimes a remake is asked for by the fans or to try and open up the game to new players.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, of course you are right. Im not complaining, my only intention was to say that I think Nintendo hit the spot on timeless graphics with Windwaker, and that it really doesnt need any update on the graphics side, it still look great. IMO it looks better than Twilight Princess today, but not when TP was released.

  • MetroidZero

All right Nintendo…time to give us: 1. System update 2. Nintendo made/certified GC Adapter.

    • uPadWatcher

Leave luck to Firmware this Summer.

    • ICHI

      or a new wavebird

    • Dimitra Giorgiou

GC Adapter already exists in some online retailers, check it up

      • Baum 「ツリー」

        “Nintendo made/certified adapter”…

    • Ken Seymour

To go with it, we need Nintendo made retro controllers for N64 and Gamecube that work on the wiiu. No offense but my controllers are getting old and I would like to buy some new ones that aren’t 3x times their original price just because they are hard to find…

    • dr scoobie

      gamecubes only cost £15.

  • Michael DeVore

Proof of concept, but there is an underlying problem. The reason the WiiU isn’t backwards compatible has nothing to do with the capabilities of the Processor. It has everything to do with the MiniDisks the GameCube used. The Drive in the WiiU Physically cannot handle the mini disk. The Same problem exists on the MacBook. If you put a mini CD into a MacBook you’re going to have to shake the thing just to get the disk out. It’s more expensive to get the slide in drives that will accept MiniDisks, and you cannot get the price down with economies of scale because no one really wants the MiniSliders any more. Trays and Top Loaders are the best bet for MiniDisks. If it wasn’t for the physical problem it would be backwards compatible with the GC already.

  • Baum 「ツリー」

the question was never IF we can play GC games on WiiU, but WHEN…

  • crocodileman94

Wether they make a GCN VC or not, I’ll still keep my GCN as a GBA widescreen HD player.

  • bizzy gie

    Do N64 now.

  • Mr. Nick

These comments about people still wanting to play the Gamecube games warm my heart. That console was unfairly ridiculed in its lifespan.

    • Evang3los

Gamecube is the best nintendo system ever released! Ties with Snes. Maybeit had less games than ps2, but it had so many 9 rated games it was ridiculous

      • Norfair20X5

It was a great system. Time Splitters 2 was one of my first Gamecube games. Damn, I miss that series…

    • Agent721

So true…I still love a game called Gladius. A great gladiator rpg/ turned based action/advenfure.

    • Bob Charlie

When I split with an old high school girlfriend a decade ago, the only reason I was sad was because I knew I wouldn’t be allowed to play her brother’s Gamecube anymore. That system was great!

  • dr scoobie

    whats with that background music?
    kinda annoying.

not the music thats actually in the game.

    • tronic307

Crediar doesn’t have sound working yet. He just overdubbed some appropriate music.

  • tronic307

And this is how you brick your Wii U.

  • Christopher Acuna

All this video does is make me want to play Wind Waker. Specifically the HD Remake lol. It looks so good on the game cube I can only imagine how amazing the cell shading will be in full 1080p HD glory!

    • Magnus Eriksson

      Did they announce 1080p?

      • Christopher Acuna

I would see no reason as to why it wouldn’t be in full 1080p.

  • discuss

Seems fake. It would have seem much more credible if we could see the TV.

  • Superstick98

I hope gamecube games come to virtual console in the future. Possibly even upscaled to do hd! That’d be awesome.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

There are a few titles I would buy again if the price is right.

  • Starfoxguy

I really hope Nintendo allows us to download gamecube games from the virtual console service. It may not have been the best system but it had great games in its library.

    • ragnathebloodedge

Agreed I love Gamecube but still prefer PS2 the most. I still loved the fact that Gamecube had some unforgettable hidden gems.

    • ItzameyaToad

I really hope so too because alot of us Nintendo fans who never got around to getting a Gamecube missed out on alot of great games. I have a few great gamecube titles like Super Mario Sunshine and Pikmin for the Wii but have never got around to buying Wind Waker and all the other great Gamecube titles so hopefully they do go with making Gamecube games on Wii U eShop(perhaps an E3 announcement). Or if they decide to not put Gamecube games on the eShop at least give the big Gamecube games an HD re-release like the Wind Waker and include extra content!

    • NkoSekirei

we will but first their focusing on getting more wii u games out and adding more features to the wii u from updates as well

    • tronic307

I’d love that, but games that require analog controls would suffer. Nintendo had a run-in with a patent troll a few years back, and got sued out of making the analog triggers with the click stop at the bottom of travel. Thats why the classic controller had to change, and the white Gamecube controller for Wii never made it out of Japan. Microsoft and Sony just settled with the patent holder, and Nintendo should have too. Now we have a $150 controller with DIGITAL triggers. For shame!

  • ragnathebloodedge

If the Wii U can run Physical Gamecube discs. Then we all know that despite PS4 having a different Architecture a Hacker will find a way to make the PS4 Fully Backwards Compatible with PS1,PS2,and PS3 disc based games.

  • Nintendo4life

    It’s fake…

  • WhackaBump

So Mega Man 10 is really Wind Waker. Mind = blown.

    • Nintendofreak

      i know perturbing

  • Maxwell Baumgarten

Please don’t use DRM because of this, nintendo.

  • Rafael Saldana

Can’t wait for VC to have gamecube games, you know they’re going to have miiverse and I really like creating restore points, helped a lot in Super Metroid

  • Vaughn Chung

Hey guys, just launched my Nintendo channel and planning to post gameplay videos/reviews of all things Wii U. Please check out my video! And thanks Wiiudaily, you guys rock :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLzNgLCTOK4

  • 150Db

The Gamecube and Wii had similar hardware, but the Wii still needed some of the Gamecube’s exact chips to load its games. Without that, and assuming this hacker didn’t write a code for software-based emulation, this shows the Wii U performing hardware emulation of the Gamecube. If that doesn’t prove the Wii U is a next-gen system, nothing will satisfy people. It takes at least a 2 generation gap to perform hardware-based emulation.

Nintendo should see the utility in enabling this capability, as it would prove to be much more lucrative than releasing only a select few Gamecube games in HD.

  • devmiles

personally i’m getting a bit sick of that virtual console idea, it’s a milking cow and what’s next? with every generation we have to purchase the good ol games again? all wii-u owners have a wii (probably most gamers have) so we can play gamecube on there including it’s original controller.

    • greengecko007

I would be more like milking a franchise if they made a remake of every game for every generation. The virtual console just allows people to buy old games that aren’t in stores in more, and let’s the developers make money, as opposed to buying NES games from your local flee market. Although, I do think that some of the old games are unreasonably priced. $8 for a NES game? lolno…

      • Baum 「ツリー」

        really?!
in Europe it’s 5€ for NES and 8€ for SNES games (wich is less than 8$ or even 7$, but I’m not sure atm).

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sidney-Majurie/100000713312752 Sidney Majurie

“with every generation we have to purchase the good ol games again?”

No one is forcing you to do anything. You don’t have to re buy anything, lol. Just play the old one on the old system. It’s a choice. It’s not Nintendo’s fault that you can’t help yourself from spending money lol. When PS4 and Xbox One release you should have no problem transfering over your digital games from PSN or Live and playing backwards compatible PS3 and Xbox 360 games. Oh wait you can’t.

Nintendo has every right to charge for games you downloaded on Wii to be used in Wii U Miiverse. It costs them money to create and run Miiverse (a service we get for free). Or you could just play your games in Wii mode on Wii U at not extra charge.

I have a Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U. I play my Gamecube games on my Gamecube :)

  • DemonRoach

WISH THEY WOULD OF JUST INCLUDED SUPPORT

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I do too even if you had to buy a special controller just to play those games if they could not map to the pro controller.

But it is what it is and they gave us direct support for their previous gen which is all you can really ask out a console.

  • http://www.facebook.com/deividwilliam.sousa Deivid William Sousa

falso!!fake!!!dont is true!! e a musica nao esta com problema é simplesmente outra versão!

  • Link

Lol! plays windwaker just to wait for console re release

  • Ricky__Spanish

I still have a Gamecube. Im good

  • Sidney Majurie

    This is so fake, LOL.

“…which is why the music is different.”

Different?!? There are people freaking harmonizing the theme! Did the emulator add a live chorus to the game? LOL. And where is the sound effects? Footsteps, water splashing, ocean breeze?

Any person with Windows Movie Maker 98 could do this.

    So fake, LOL.

    • tronic307

It’s real, and old news. Crediar happened to show this before he got the sound working, so he added his own. If this was a fake, they’d just use the Gamecube or Wii for the footage and the sound would be accurate. Think about it. Google “Crediar”, you’ll find he’s a legit hacker.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sidney-Majurie/100000713312752 Sidney Majurie

Voting down my OPINION while voting up your own… lol. If you want people to believe you’re legit, show people off screen footage of you going through the motion and not this captured footage where no one can see the process. ANYONE can mock this up. If you don’t do that, expect people to be suspicious as we have a LEGITIMATE reason to be. Excuse me for not going hook, line, and sinker and taking an anonymous “hackers” word for it…

        • tronic307

Hey, I didn’t vote you down, or myself up for that matter. If you’re new to the scene, and are unaware of the numerous brilliant hacks and homebrew Crediar has programmed for the Wii, that’s your problem.

Of course the video is fakable, but Crediar wouldn’t destroy his reputation for one stupid video, especially when he had a hand in developing countless breakthrough hacks and homebrew for the Wii. Again, Google his name, read up, and then come back.

          http://wiibrew.org/wiki/User:Crediar

  • http://people.ign.com/returnofthetruth2 ReturnoftheTruth2

Nintendo concentrates too much on old game news instead of worrying about NEW game news. Old games don’t help the Wii U.

    • H8ersBH8n

Yes because 3D Mario, Sonic Lost World, Bayonetta 2, X, Yarn Yoshi, Smash Bros. 4 and Retro’s game are all old.

      • john

I think you’re missing the point here. I’m not saying I agree or anything, but I think the guy’s trying to say we don’t care about virtual consoles, if we want to play those games we’ll get our SNES’s down from the closet. We want MORE news on the new games like Yarn Yoshi or Bayonetta 2.

        • H8ersBH8n

Well at this point, they really don’t wanna say too much about the new games considering E3’s just next week.

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I think he is making a statement claiming everyone feels like he does. You may not care or he may not care about Virtual Console games but the sales of those games and people excited for upcoming games and the future possibilities of games from other platforms past says differently.

Sure it is not the primary reason people bought the Wii or the Wii U but it is definitely a reason many people enjoy the console. They can play games from the past 30 years (almost) as well as modern games all on the same console.

Sure I can go grab my old consoles out of storage as I have the NES, SNES, N64, and the Genesis to this day and I am sure they still work just fine. Unfortunately I gave my Game Cube away when I got the Wii which I am wondering the person I gave it still has it because I may ask for it back as I still have games for that console.

Also have you tried to plug those consoles into a modern TV without some sort of video converter? They look horrible because those consoles were designed for tube TVs that only displayed every other line of resolution. Games are all fuzzy and some video effects do not display well or at all.

Then there is the whole morality and legal issue of emulation. If you do not have the game and/or make the ROM yourself then you legally cannot download the ROM. I have the dolphin emulator and all the games I play using it I ripped myself from my game library. Even then the emulation is far from perfect where some games play really well with minor glitches and others have horrible sound and graphical issues.

          • john

I’m not saying I agree with him, I’m just saying that’s what I got out of his comment.

    • tronic307

What does Nintendo’s focus have to do with this? Stay on topic.

  • Christopher Coonan

    “…next best thing: a PS3 controller.”

Yeah, because the PS3 controller is second-best to the amazing Gamecube controller. Really, guys?

  • RockGod

Nintendo did not add support for GCN games to be played on the Wii U and I have absolutely no problem with that as their backward compatability with the Wii has proven amazing.
If you think about it all non-supported consoles were released for the Wii console on the VC, it only makes sense that Nintendo would do the same with Wii U.
So YES I could see an announcement being made around E3 time that GCN titles will become available on the Wii U VC.
What titles get released and when are another story for another time.

  • Stephen Davis

Im all for opening possibilities, but until this is released through Nintendo, I really think hackers need to STOP! As hackers ruined the Wii with all the pirated copies of games and not to mention the number of hackers themselves in online matches. They need to quit, its going to cost us Third Party’s and as Zorpix said possible DRM. All of which doesn’t hold a bright future for those who payed for their WIIU. Nintendo I hope can continue to remain aggressive with this, and shut down these attempts. Seriously its like cheating at a ballgame, it ruins it for the rest of us

    • Brett Bates

You people shame hackers for absolutely trivial things, and I think its insane. You have to understand, in the past, even on the Wii for several things, these ‘hackers’ would quite often go out of the way to prevent piracy with what they created. By hacking Gamecube compatiblity into the Wii U and combining it with some of the software that requires retail games ‘hackers’ made in the past, it’s not a problem.

Come to think of it, only a very small sect of the hacking community and companies that focus on it seem to want piracy. Think about George Hotz and others like him, they didn’t want to pirate, they just wanted to make their own programs and fully extend the capabilities of the hardware they owned.

  • PS4/WiiU

I really hope gamecube games do come on the virtual console, I would love to play some of my favorite games like super Mario sunshine, luigi’s mansion, legend of Zelda 4 swords etc.
