Nintendo rumored to consider buying Atlus in bankruptcy proceedings

atlus

A few weeks ago we told you about the trouble Index Corporation has run into and what that means for one of their subsidiary companies, Atlus. If rumors hold true, it could mean Nintendo will be at the front of the line for purchasing the publisher when it heads to the auction block.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is the latest to be released by Atlus, exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS. No sales figures have been released for the game yet, but it makes the most sense for Nintendo to purchase Atlus, as a Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem crossover is known to be in the works between the two companies.

What do you think? Should Nintendo snap up Atlus if it’s put up for auction, THQ style? Let us know in the comments.

    YES! PLEASE!

  • Zuxs13

Well that’s a no brain-er. They have plenty of cash and they need to produce more games and Atlus has experience on many consoles that could help benefit Nintendo. Im sure many Sony fans would be mad at this and Id agree there have been many great Atlus games on sony consoles. But this would be a good move to pull them to Nintendo.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

They’d be mad of course, but that’s business. Nintendo would be crazy to help out a rival.

  • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

PlayStation fans are up in arms because Atlus RPGs have typically come to their consoles as well. Xbox fans are too busy playing their shooters to care.

    • mojack411

Yeah that’s what I was thinking as well, however, how does Sony itself view Atlus. Are they actually interested in purchasing it?

Either way, I think it would be great if Nintendo got them and honestly, they need Atlus the most.

      • DragonSilths

Not that Sony could buy Atlus even if they wanted to. How can they? With “I owe you’s” lol.

        • Chris Hamilton

so what , you consider a company with a $10 billion cash reserve and over $100 billion in assets broke? Lol who are you bill gates?

          • Crazy Joe Davola

Sony has $10b in cash to go with $14b in debt. Nintendo has $11.6b in cash and $2m in debt. How do you figure Sony is gunna buy a company with assets? “We’ll trade you some blu-rays for your IP”?

          • Chris Hamilton

nintendo has about $12billion equity while sony has $28 billion in equity, your right Sony is broke.

          • TalesOfBS

Sony’s electronics division are worth junk today. The company is about to be split and sold. I can’t see they buying anything.

          • Chris Hamilton

electronics is hurting but the playstation/computers division is not ,it makes sense to sell off divisions that are losing money so they can put money into the divsions that are actually making money.

          • DragonSilths

Nintendo has the $10 billion in the bank not Sony. Sony sold their North America HQ for $1.1 billion to pay off debt…Sony is still in debt and a lot of it. Nintendo on the other hand even if they have a debt it isn’t even remotely an issue.

          • Chris Hamilton

sony has 895 billion yen on hand that’s close enough to $10 billion and over $150 billion in assets, they are far from the doom and gloom that you guys are making them out to be

Sony isn’t broke but I doubt they are in a buying mood, I also don’t think nintendo is in a buying mood either with the lackluster wiiu sales. It more likely that atlus will self publish

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Maybe if Nintendo does win this bid they could keep games developed by Atlus cross-platform.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        Cross-platform as in how?

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

As in they could own Atlus and still publish games made under that developer as Atlus but still make the games for Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and other platforms.

I know it is not something typically Nintendo does but maybe it could be a good way use this developer as a multi-platform outlet.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Nah…..for Nintendo, that would be helping the competition, so I doubt they’d ever go for that. It’s a nice thought for the fans in general, but we both know Nintendo would never do it. If they’re going to buy Atlus, they’d just be a developer and Nintendo publishes as usual.

      • The Libyan

But why would they do that and give their competitors great games that could justify buying a Wii U? Think of how many people will buy a Wii U if Persona 5 ended up being an exclusive. It might not be fair to PS fans, but that’s just business

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

It is business and Nintendo will most likely not do that (if they end up purchasing Atlus). I just thought it may be a good way for Nintendo to expand their horizons.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Yeah, they would get a ton of profit. It would make sense in some cases, but seeing as they’d be helping their rivals as well, Nintendo would certainly back off on that. Nice idea, though.

        • Jon

“It might not be fair to PS fans, but that’s just business”

hmm, well there are a lot of games I would love to have on wii U that are going to be PS4 only/Xone such as Kingdom hearts 3, elders scrolls and then what Microsoft did to Rare and so on. Now for the fair comment, do you think it is fair that these companies get these yet Wii U doesn’t? Every console has these exclusives that don’t come to other consoles where a lot of us Nintendo owners and fan would need to purchase a who other console to play and often times, it is more Nintendo fans need to buy the other consoles more than the other console fans need to buy Nintendo.

Honestly, I would love it if Nintendo bought Atlas, less meaning for me to have to go and fork over a buttload of cash for another system to play the Atlas games I really like that are not on Nintendo.

          • The Libyan

No, it’s incredibly unfair that Wii U never gets these games, but sadly that’s just seems to be the norm. Whenever a game doesn’t come to a Nintendo console, people just think that’s normal because “WII U is under-powered” (which it isn’t). But whenever Nintendo gets sweet exclusives ( ex. Bayonetta 2), the world gets all pissed and claims it’s “not fair”. That’s why I added the fair comment.

      • neostar1234

        They wont

    • greengecko007

I have a hard time believing Sony fans are bent out of shape about this. The main JRPGs I saw people playing on the PS3 was the cult hit Disgaea series, which is published by NIS America now. Not to mention the rising popularity of Western RPGS like The Elder Scrolls and The Witcher not coming to Wii U.

Nintendo + Atlus though seems like a good fit.

      • 0pinionatedgamer

I would miss Persona which is typically a PS franchise. Plus I think many other PS people would after all P4G was really quite popular and was a hit with critics. Sony will want Persona, Maybe even another game in the vein of Demon’s Crown if it does well. Plus if they want to bring Demon’s souls back Atlus would be the right team to collab with. I think they are equally valuable to both Nintendo and Sony. I’d like to see them under Square or Bandai Namco personally, then Nintendo gets Shin Megami and Sony gets Persona, Dragon’s crown with things like Muramasa likely multi-plat.

      • Michael DeVore

If you follow the links to the original source on the idigitaltimes you’ll see their comments have blown up in a slightly different way then here. Most of it is just irrational since it stems from people being unable to read the word “Analysis”, and are thinking what is being reported is some sort of fake insider lie. In truth it’s just an analysis of what is publicly known. The fanboys though are taking it as queue to start the stages of griefing(yes, griefing not grieving).

        • greengecko007

I looked at a lot of the comments. The highest rated comment, and the one that has the most attention, is somebody who is questioning the authenticity of the article. While Ashley King did a good job relaying to us here at Wii U Daily as a rumor, the original article tries very hard to make this seems as if it’s already a done deal fact.

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I think Nintendo needs them. I mean, they have the crossover coming up, and having such a great RPG team can’t be bad at all.

Also 100% agree about the Xbox fans >.>

      • The Clockwork Being

Yeah its their second big crossover game. Nintendo never and I mean NEVER does crossover.

Edit: I am talking big crossover with other companies not just one character or tree in the game so these take out Smash bros, Mario Kart arcade, Mario hoops 3 on 3, SSX dince it is only one version, NBA street v3, soulcalibur 2 gc version, Wario Blast.

Mario and Sonic is a BIG, note that I say BIG crossover. almost equal number of characters from both ftranchise, notion of both franchise are present, attibutes of both franchises are present.

That is a crossover. In definition a crossover is the placement of two or more otherwise discrete fictional characters, settings, or universes into the context of a single story. They can arise from legal agreements between the relevant copyright holders, unauthorized efforts by fans, or common corporate ownership.

Smash bros, Mario Kart arcade, Mario hoops 3 on 3, SSX dince it is only one version, NBA street v3, soulcalibur 2 gc version, Wario Blast are irrevelant when I am stating a Nintendo+ other company crossover. As mentionned before Mario and Sonic combine both universe and their elements. In this case its Intelligent Systems+Atlus so Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei crossover this making it a company plus Nintendo crossover since the elemets from each of those fictional worlds will combine together. Get it now. I am actually going to post this on everyone that keeps trying to correct me without reading or trying to comprehend was is being meant here

While I mostly agree, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics has like, what, 5 games? Although Sega is basically Nintendo at this point

          • The Clockwork Being

Yeah but the Mario and Sonic Olympic is one crossover series so thats the first and SMT X Shin Megami tensi is the second. But yeah Sega is basically Nintendo. Still wondering what that 3rd sonic game is.

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I know I’m the only one who wants this, but I want another shadow game done better >.>

          • The Clockwork Being

I mostly want Sonic Adventure 3 just to see the Xbox fans and Sony sonic fans pissed

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

well I’m sure they know people want the chaos back…

Shadow the Hedgehog was one of my favorite Gamecube games back in the day :) It would be nice to see Sega improve it.

          • Joe (ジョー)

SMT X Shin Megami Tensei? LOL.

            Shin Megami Tencest

          • The Clockwork Being

LOL my bad. It was early in the morning i wasnt completely awake

        • greengecko007

Plus that Pokemon Conquest game was another crossover.

          • The Clockwork Being

FIne so SMT X FE is a third crossover my mistake. But Pokemon Conquest wasn’t that big IMO but it was still an amazing game.

          • greengecko007

Yeah the Pokemon spinoffs never sell as well as the main series. I personally wasn’t even interested enough to buy it, so I get what you mean.

          • Madmagican

Wait, what was the other half to the crossover in that game?

          • greengecko007

It’s Pokemon x Nobunaga’s Ambition, which is a tactical RPG. The original title was simply Pokemon : Nobunaga’s Ambition.

          • Madmagican

Thanks, I’d enjoyed the game but I could never figure out where all those characters came from

        • The Mystical One

There was also Fortune Street (Mario x Dragon Quest)

          • Assassinated23

Smash Bros is absolutely a crossover. Even just between Nintendo franchises it’s a crossover, but they also have non Nintendo franchises in there as well.

          • The Clockwork Being

I am tired of repeating this to everyone so I just will edit what I said. What I meant is Nintendo franchise+other company franchise huge crossover. Smash is a Nintendo franchise crossover

          Some examples:

          Pokemon conquest
          Arguably smash bros
          Mario Kart Arcade (with pacman!)
          Boom street (with dragonquest)
Mario hoops 3 on 3 (with final fantasy and dq chars)
SSX on tour (with mario, luigi and peach in the gc version)
NBA street v3 (which had the all-stars team)
          Link in soulcalibur 2
Wario blast! Starring bomberman (snes / gb)
Mario & Sonic at the whatever olympics in some year

These are just from the top of my head, I’m sure I’ll be able to list more if I google it.

First of all, your definition is wrong.
You are talking specifically about THIRD PARTY CROSSOVERS, but you never specified this until your full explanation. You also seem to refuse to call it a crossover until it contains ‘enough’ elements from both. It seems you decide wether there are enough elements according to how it’ll fit your argument.

Actually, a crossover is already happening if only one guest character from another game appears – even if that game is by the same developer (unless you’re talking specifically about third party crossovers)

            Second:
Wario Blast… wario vs. bomberman – or actually wario in the bomberman universe – is a BIG crossover… one of the first.
Why is it irrelevant? Please explain.
You have Nintendo + Hudson – and it seems to have your condition of: “the placement of two or more otherwise discrete fictional characters, settings, or universes into the context of a single story”

Hoops – over half the characters and stages are taken from the classic Final Fantasy games. They should have called it Mario x Final Fantasy baseball. If you count Boom street, you need to count Mario Hoops too. It also complies with the standards for what you think makes a crossover.

I’m not going to debate this any further… but I did want to note the odd way you seem to be building your arguments, as it seems you disagree with all above posters simply because you disagree with the standard definition of a crossover.

Well, that in itself isn’t fanboyism. That’s more an Xbox culture. Fanboyism is when you spend several hours trying to convince someone why Xbox is supreme…on a PlayStation forum.

          • Steven_Segal

Yeah, I know, but the mayority of those who do that are also xbox fanboys.

You have great knowledge of xbox fanboys Mr Steven Segal!

Honestly, I don’t think Sony can afford to buy anymore studios. Not before the PS4 releases. As long as Nintendo doesn’t let someone else, EA, bully them out of their price point, I think it’s a pretty safe bet. I’m not willing to say Nintendo needs this company, but it would be one hell of a great addition to the company.

    • disqus_sgtob6da3X

Yup. Im going on forums about the matter and many dont want Atlus to be first party games. Some rather have Namco pick it up and stay 3rd party.

    • tronic307

Don’t think about this too long: If Microsoft winds up snapping up Atlus like they did Rare, I’m buying an Xbone, Nintendo.

    • Baryll

I think this is a perfect way to get back some of the Nintendo fans – like myself – who have left, but on the other hand, I do not want them to buy Atlus because I know that may very well mean no Persona on the PS4, which will be my first pick. It’ll be interesting to see how things turn out.

    • zajac1661

Well i disagree with that being general “fan” behaviour(if that is what you mean) Luckily some of us play across more than one gaming platform. Some kids/teenagers of today, act like they belong to different cultures, when playing on different systems. Sometimes i really feel embarrased to see hatred, generalization and all in all out of bound moralistic behaviour, considering it is playing videogames.. . Luckily it only counts a little margin online, considering the complete playerbase. A non hypocryte would just go with the system, that offers the most interesting software.

Some kids/teenagers of today, act like they belong to different cultures, when playing on different systems… . Luckily it only counts a little margin online, considering the complete playerbase. A non hypocryte would just go with the system, that offers the most interesting software.

  • Tannealle Merryman

    DO IT!

  • Pebbicle

Yes, and make Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem even more awesome! :D

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Maybe if Nintendo wins this bid they can still use Atlus to make cross platform games.

    • tim

nintendo won’t make cross platform games, do you live in a cave? why should they?

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

The derogatory tone is unnecessary. I understand that Nintendo typically does not cross platform their games but it was just an idea. No need to be rude.

  • CyanideInsanity

I don’t know if I like the idea or not. I want atlus to be able to release multiplatform if they want and can. I would never have been able to play catherine if it didn’t get an xbox 360 port.

  • starwars360

Yes Nintendo rescued Platinum Games for Bayonetta so now Nintendo seem so kind much more lately and rescued another devs team. :)

Let hope it is true. I remember rumours said Nintendo might rescued Bayonetta before real info confirmed by Nintendo they did rescued it in last Summer. One year later and now we in Summer so another thing rescue in Summer by Nintendo. :)

  • Mark Thom

YES NINTENDO U GUYS NEED THIS BUY

  • bizzy gie

Why does SMT IV cost $50? I thought the highest Nintendo could retail a game for was $40 due to the limited hardware.

Does SMT really have that much content in it?

    • Mitch Hall

It costs that much because every copy comes with a strategy guide, a partial soundtrack, and special packaging. However, this is only for the first printing of the game; once they’re out of stock, Atlus will start selling the game alone for $40.

That said, the game DOES offer quite a bit of content; unless you REALLY rush to finish the game, the story should take you about 40-50 hours.

      • bizzy gie

That can’t be it. The digital version also costs $50.

    • Tim van Broekhoven

      50 is a normal 3ds reatail price?
Hell, I’ve even seen games for 60 and Wii U games for over 70…

      • bizzy gie

        Really? $70 Wii U games?

        • Tim van Broekhoven

Oh, well it is in Euro’s, but still… I’ll make a screenshot

I can’t wait to see the reaction of sony fanboy. No more persona games on their platform. Either way interesting to watch how thing fold.

  • http://www.w-o-n.org/ GoldDreams

That would be a smart move on Nintendo’s part. I wonder if they did buy Atlus if they would then be able to port some it’s top games to the Wii U?

  • Marcus Navarro

So would that mean Persona comes to Wii U/3DS? Along with ensured ex

    • Marcus Navarro

ensured exclusivity of SMT x Fire Emblem? Nice

      • Baum 「ツリー」

I think it’s pretty obvious that SMT x FE will be exclusive (if they’re still able to do it in this situation) since FE is a Nintendo IP ^^

  • Mitch Hall

I hope they do end up buying Atlus – having them as a first party developer would be awesome.

Speaking of which, it would be cool if they’d also buy Platinum Games and Retro (they don’t already own Retro, do they?)

    • Stephen Davis

I agree in Nintendo to purchase Platinum games or at least a 2nd party, which I remember reading Iwata is thinking about doing. BUT c’mon dude of course they own Retro, they have since 2002!

      • Mitch Hall

Damn, my bad. That’s what I get for writing comments while I’m half asleep.

  • Stephen Davis

I dunno, what games have ATLUS produced that really are worth the investment? They should use that money to convince Rockstar to release GTAV on WIIU :P (All kidding aside) No really the only game that I liked from ATLUS was a surgeon game on the DS. Looking at their games on their site, they are games I never even heard of. Japanese titles, is the idea to buy it and have them work on Nintendo IPs? Bottom line is this publisher worth being put on Nintendo’s payroll? I guess could bring experience in HD to the table. Its sad to see publisher or developers get sold out, BUT I don’t think they could be in better hands than in Nintendo’s. Interesting to see how this plays out.

    • Pikachief

Persona is a very big much loved franchise. I havent heard much about the series but i’ve only heard people rave about it. It might just be much bigger in Japan.

      • Adrian

I only played Persona 3..or was it 2? But I was addicted for like a month. It was great.

  • willweinert

MAN! On one hand I’d love to see my favorite RPG dev on my favorite console, but on the other hand, a lot of people would be furious to see persona 5 on Wii U, imagine Bayonetta 2 times 9000. Then again, that would be kind of hilarious.

    • Yousif Alromaithi

Sony fans will die if Mr Iwata won the bid. Mr Pachter will die of annoyance. He will troll everyday with Nintendo fans. Better keep Persona on Sony interest.

  • Yousif Alromaithi

Buying most of the share mean good things for Nintendo. But I think they should try to pick up most of Atlus share ownership. Those includes Shin Megami Tensei, Trauma Center, Etrian Odyssey, Luminous arc from DS “presumably dead”, Code Princess, Devil Summoner and Radiant Historia staff . This might help Nintendo in developing RPG games on their consoles and if Sony acquired this franchise they will not care since how many Persona games they did or published because Sony interest’s is naughty dog. Nintendo published many titles of Atlus on DS and 3DS. Pardon me about Naughty Dog’s business with Sony but truly that Naughty Dog put’s more money for Sony than Atlus in terms of games. So I prefer Nintendo Acquires these franchises. Also to be fair keep Persona on Sony.

  • XiC

Nintendo has $10.5 billion in reserves and Atlus would cost under $100 million. They should buy Atlus as Shin Megami Tensei series is great and fantastic sellers. It’d be amazing to add yet another first party studio to the Nintendo umbrella of w̶o̶r̶l̶d̶ console dominating influence.

  • Archiq09

If nintendo buy atlus, Atlus can continue to make game on ps and xbox but more games for wii u and it’s one of thing who make nintendo a great company.

    • Yousif Alromaithi

Nintendo buy most share of Atlus then yes this thing could work. I hope Nintendo buys what I want from them.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

If Nintendo bought Atlus, they won’t allow them to develop games for their rivals lol. Unless they only have a small share, which isn’t the case.

    • XiC

When Nintendo acquired Monolith Soft they made their games into Nintendo exclusives except for what was already in the works.

If Nintendo buys Atlus the same is likely to happen and Sony and Microsoft can kiss that studio’s works goodbye as it will become a Nintendo exclusive.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Nintendo doesn’t own Bayonetta nor Platinum Games. They just have a publishing contract and fund the game, which will keep the second installment exclusive to the Wii U. Any games beyond that, is up to Platinum.

        • Luffy

where did he talk about platinum or bayonetta?

          • Daniel Gonzalez

He edited it a while ago. Which is why it looks out of place.

          • XiC

Yeah, I edited it I believe an hour after I posted it. I don’t think I saw your comment when I did edit it as I wouldn’t want to make anyone look wrong without reason.

When I originally put it up, I said Platinum games but I wasn’t fully sure if they acquired the studio or bought the license to Bayonetta. I looked into it later on of course and found it was a partnership so I just switched it to a studio I knew the history of better.

Either way the fact remains that if Nintendo becomes a part of the process the game always comes out as a Nintendo exclusive :].

          • Daniel Gonzalez

However, Bayonetta won’t be, unless they form another partnership. If anything, Nintendo buying Platinum Games and even Atlus would benefit them.

          • XiC

Bayonetta is likely to turn multi-plat after this game lest Platinum is bought over. I think Nintendo would like that as they know the studio is quality however it likely isn’t for sale.

          • Luffy

            ok chill :)

    • Jon

I doubt Nintendo would allow them to release games on rival consoles if they bought them. Maybe if they had projects already in the works that were close to done, maybe but they won’t release titles on other platforms. Just the same as when Rare went to Microsoft, Nintendo never saw another Rare game (which is sad, they were a great company)

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Not true, they did release a few games on their handhelds since Microsoft isn’t in the portable market. As for consoles, yeah, you’ll never see one on a Nintendo console again, unless Rare becomes independent again.

        • Jon

I can only think of 2 games on the DS and one was Diddy Kong Racing, something from Donkey Kong which Nintendo owns and the other one is Viva Pinata or something which I know nothing about. Aside from that, nothing…. nothing at all

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Those are the first two, the others are “It’s Mr. Pants!” and Banjo- Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. I only know from years of researching, if not for that I would think these games didn’t exist at all. From what I know, both of those games fell short on sales.

  • QuizmasterBos

I’ve seen various people comment on how Persona should stay on Sony platforms. Other people prefer to see it on Nintendo IF Nintendo would buy Atlus.

However, why can’t both things happen? Turn Persona into a cross-platform game and release on both Sony and Nintendo. Upsides on this would be that the game reaches a greater audience, Nintendo gets a new ip and can attract more gamers, Sony gets to keep Persona as well and it is a better financial move than letting Sony keep Persona.

Don’t forget, Nintendo and Sony are companies, rivals even. And that means that Nintendo shouldn’t be TOO nice to Sony, so I think Nintendo should just let Persona be on both consoles. However, this is ONLY if Nintendo actually goes and buys Atlus.

    • XiC

Nintendo would not go and share titles like Persona. It already has practically no third party support and it will hold onto everything it can to convince consumers to buy the Wii U.

My friend bought a PS Vita for Persona 4. I wouldn’t be surprised if other fans do the same if it became a Nintendo exclusive as they are pretty dedicated fans.

Nintendo will go for Atlus. Here are the reasons:

      1. It wants to see to it that its investment in Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem are ensured and not fall through. That is a much anticipated game and the potential sales can’t be passed up.

      2. Shin Megami Tensei and Persona both sell very well and have large established and dedicated fanbases. This is something Nintendo would like to obtain and retain.

      3. Nintendo has $10.5 billion in reserves (2012 figures) while Sony likely has no such money to spend. It recently just sold its US headquarters so that they could pull a profit this year and have not truly turned a profit since 2008. I can’t see shareholders of Sony thrilled to toss more money at gaming related proposals as they are so incredibly unprofitable for Sony.

For those reasons Nintendo will obtain Atlus and will not partner with Sony.

      • The Clockwork Being

Nintendo should make Persona 5 an exclusive and release 1-4 as Wii U HD remastered.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

If they own Atlus by the end of all this, it’ll certainly be exclusive.

        • XiC

Yes to make Persona 5 a Wii U exclusive no to the re-releases being HD remastered.

Think of it this way. Making Wind Waker into HD is taking them a year and a half if not more. It is likely only tying up one or two EAD teams but that is a significant amount of human resources being taken up if it’s for four games. I say that because the new teams they acquire from Atlus have had no working experience on the Wii U.

Seeing as Nintendo takes forever to make games I think it’d be best if they just focused all their teams on first party titles and just re-release those games in standard.

          • The Clockwork Being

            You’re right

    • Daniel Gonzalez

If Nintendo owns Atlus 100%, they are not gonna be dumb enough to develop for a rival like Sony. Get real. Lol. Nintendo wouldn’t be nice to Sony and bring Persona to their platforms. That wouldn’t make sense at all.

      • Yousif Alromaithi

Agreed on your statements. Sony fans cannot play Persona on Sony consoles if Nintendo bought ownership of Atlus. Whatever is best works for Nintendo and business corporation. I want them to acquire Shin Megami Tensei, Trauma Center, Etrian Odyssey, Luminous arc from DS “presumably dead”, Code Princess, Devil Summoner, Radiant and Historia staff . If Persona shares bought by Nintendo then yes Nintendo will never allow Sony to have Persona on their consoles. But best to pick up the grand prize. Sony, Namco Bandai, Capcom and Konami knows Atlus is worth a lot. So they know they have to outbid Nintendo at the auction in order to emerge winners.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

In this case, I think Nintendo has the most cash to throw out there to win this bid. Depends on how far they’re willing to go. Personally, I think they should go all out and buy them fully along with their IPs.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Yes agreed, I personally would love Devil Summoner on Nintendo. But competition would be fierce. I have no doubt Nintendo will pick up the best.

    • The Clockwork Being

NO to multiplat for P5 You know why. Consider this… if Sony were to acquire Atlus, then that would essentially mean that Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem would be cancelled (or the Fire Emblem assets would need to be replaced with Sony IP).

      • Steven_Segal

Yeah, that’s just obvious. The other guy is just wrong!

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Unless they are under contract, then no. Like any business, they have to honor the contract and finish the game.

    • tim

you live in a fantasy world

      • QuizmasterBos

Not really. The only reason I posted this is because I saw people making claims that Nintendo would be nice enough to leave Persona to Sony here.

Stupid and half asleep idiot that I am, I totally believed that. Of course giving Persona to Sony or allowing the game to be cross platform released would be bad for Nintendo, finance-wise.

I guess I didn’t write my comment very well, that totally explains the major dislikes. I didn’t think of it very well and I totally deserves those dislikes. I’ll be more rational next time.

  • Arthur Zennig

Buying considerations should also be HD programming expertise. Seems Nintendo is in highly need for this Intellectual property spec.

  • Madmagican

Nintendo buying Atlus would be a great business decision; especially keeping the crossover in mind

  • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

None of the Big Three should buy Atlus IMO. As good as Atlus games are, they are niche titles and they are not system sellers. No complaints if Nintendo does get Atlus, but I think Atlus would be better off under a 3rd party publisher (not EA or Activision, the thought of that makes me cringe).

    • XiC

Nintendo is one of the few game companies out there that will continue to let Atlus do as they wish. As they are working closely with Atlus on Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem you can tell that they clearly respect Atlus’s ideas and decisions.

In fact Nintendo has allowed every studio it has bought to continue to make games as they wish. Is there any less blood in Bayonetta 2 now that Nintendo owns it? No, the Big N knows what should be done when owning another studio.

Sony is too broke to buy Atlus and Microsoft doesn’t care about anything in Japan.

The only third party studios that make any sense in buying Atlus are Capcom, Konami and Squire Enix. The issue with these studios is that they’re either broke or already make a similar genre game that sells similar amounts.

Atlus games seem to sell anywhere from 300,000 (handheld) to a million (console). They seem like a safe investment to me especially when you consider Nintendo’s situation. I mean if you can’t attract third party studios, why not buy them?

      • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

The Sony is broke argument doesn’t fly with me. They may not be chalk full of resources, but they still have enough for purchases of companies like Gaikai.

Nintendo also believes that software sells hardware, and even though most Atlus games are profitable, they aren’t system sellers. It won’t hurt Nintendo to have Atlus, but it’s not like they are going to be selling Wii U consoles left and right with their titles.

        • XiC

Well I got tired of backing up my facts but I’ll give you two very noticeable facts for Sony’s finances.

They sold their US headquarters this year for 1.2 billion so that they can pull a profit this year. Sony also hasn’t pulled a true profit since 2008, that’s right five years of losing or making next to no money.

If they had money before great, but if they want to make a profit this year and appease their investors they can’t go and buy a studio right after they sold their HQ as it would put them back to a loss.

          http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/12q4_sony.pdf

You can verify anything I’ve said if you wish but the hardest proof is Sony’s own financial report which puts earnings at only 18 million dollars (despite selling off their headquarters for at least a billion).

I’m not sure about Atlus games not being system sellers as I’ve had one friend who’s gone out to buy a PS Vita just for Persona 4. In any case the fanbase for Persona is amazing. It’s a large and dedicated fanbase which is why the series even got its own Anime. There’s a lot of die hard fans and it would move consoles without a doubt. The only question being how many of course.

          • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

I’m aware of the facts, but my point still stands. Atlus games are not system sellers, and we will most likely not see any benefits of a Nintendo/Atlus partnership for at least a few years. Agree to disagree.

          • Jon

well, in a way , they would help sell the systems, atlas games to Nintendo would mean, Nintendo with more support. With more support they will be able to get out more games for the system that would probably be profitable and possibly bring a lot of fans of these games to Nintendo which would increase the user base as a lot of fans of atlus are from Sony that would probably end up buying Wii U for their second console. This is what other 3rd party companies are wanting from nintendo in order to give them more support.

          • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

Oh it will help, I certainly don’t believe otherwise. I just don’t think it will be as much as people are expecting it to be.

          • Jon

well, yeah it won’t be huge but definitely will help especially where it is much needed :)

          • XiC

I don’t think you’re aware of all the facts so I took the time to write all the data with proof to support what I’m saying.

We’ll see the benefit of the partnership next year when Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem is released.

That game will sell quickly and highly. Fire Emblem games sell anywhere between around 500,000 to 1,000,000 add Shin Megami Tensei to the mix and all the hype, great coverage and promotions, it’ll likely sell well and may boost console sales. Also remember that the new Fire Emblem Awakening has been attributed to boosting 3DS sales as well. It’ll be very interesting to see how its new fanbase will boost the Wii U.

Considering Pikmin 3 which has boosted Wii U sales having had a smaller, less dedicated fan base than the Shin Megami Tensei x Persona, I find it difficult to believe the same isn’t going to happen. Japan is mad for anything Persona and even the Anime series sold well enough that it has existed past five years and continues to this day with a new film in the works.

            http://myanimelist.net/anime/14407/Persona_3_the_Movie

The Blu-Ray releases which are priced at the very least the same as the games if not higher also sell well. Placing in the top 25 in sales in 2012.

            http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-02-28/japan-animation-blu-ray-disc-ranking/february-13-19

Frankly there’s far more indication that it will boost sales than anything else. I’ll make this clear, I haven’t even played Persona and I’m fully aware of how popular and good the games are. It is difficult not to bump into this franchise one way or another when looking into RPG or Anime due to its sheer popularity.

Do not let the figures fool you. The only reason it didn’t break a million with the second last console game was because it was released on the PS2 in 2008 after the PS3 was out for two years. It went largely unnoticed by anyone other than the core fans who bought it for their previous gen console. Otherwise in the current age Persona should be breaking over a million sales on consoles easily.

            Good day to you.

          • XiC

Eh, I tried to clear your ignorance. I don’t think you understand that giving your opinion without an inch of fact is absurd. Yet you do that and when people push you for a reasoning you inevitably have nothing to say.

Oh well, I can only hope to educate so many :].

          • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

I can tell from this comment and the previous one that you are misconstruing what I am saying, and that the assumptions you make aren’t getting you anywhere.

I never said Atlus games weren’t profitable, I said that they aren’t system sellers. Your facts you have posted don’t show anything about how Atlus games are system sellers. That is what I am arguing. GTA IV sold well, but that wasn’t necessarily a system seller. For 360, it was Gears of War and Halo 3. For Wii, Wii Sports and Twilight Princess. I would probably say MGS4 for the PS3 was the system seller, as the PS3 started picking up steam shortly after that game was released. The games that get people to pick up a console are the system sellers, and historically, Atlus games don’t do it.

You can bring up how popular Persona is all you want, it doesn’t change the fact that Persona games, and other Atlus games for that matter, are not system sellers. If it was, Persona 4 Golden would of skyrocketed Vita sales, but it hasn’t. Even going by the ever unreliable VGChartz, which doesn’t include digital downloads, Persona 4 Golden sales aren’t promising.

The original point I made was that Atlus games (with the possible exception of Demon’s Souls, since Dark Souls did relatively well) are niche titles and are not system sellers. Nothing you have posted has countered that. Nothing in Atlus’ history has shown that there games are system sellers, and if SMT x FE sells a lot (and by that, I mean that it turns out to be a GOTY contender and moves many Wii U consoles), will it be because of SMT, FE, or Nintendo? Given that Atlus and FE games aren’t HUGE sellers, it’s too early to say that that SMT x FE will be the Wii U system seller, which isn’t likely given that recognizable Nintendo franchises have going into mid-2014 are games that are more likely to be system sellers than SMT x FE.

            Again, agree to disagree.

          • XiC

I gave you analytics. These are all facts that point towards Atlus games boosting sales.

There is no statistic out there that actually says a game sells consoles. To say “console seller” is incredibly hard to prove right or wrong so the only way to probably given an answer is to look at analytics. That is until after a game is released; the spike in sales data is the easiest way to show a console seller.

What you’ve defined as a system seller with MGS4 is a trend. You can’t base system sellers on that as trends are lengthy in time and any number of game released during the trend could have added to the cause.

Games give spikes of console sales but usually a negligible amount after sales stabilize. That’s the easiest way to see a console seller. Was MSG4 a console seller yes, but that’s because it not only fulfilled the characteristics of a console seller but also had incredible first week sales accompanied by the spike in hardware to prove it. Of course there’s other ways but that’s the easiest to see.

Persona 4: The Golden however did achieve exactly that. PSV sales went up by 79% a week before release and hit 150% on the week of release. The week following its release saw PS Vita sales drop drastically.

            http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly/41077/Japan/

You can go ahead and call VGChartz unreliable but independent sources have compared VGChartz data to more local data and found it to be typically around 5% – 15% off. Even if you take that into account it still shows the point that Persona 4: The Golden boosted PS Vita sales. What is also notable is the adoption rate for the game was around 20% of all Vita owners in Japan. Games with very high adoption rates usually are console sellers such as NSMB which had an adoption rate of 27%.

A recognizable Nintendo franchise such as Pikmin 3 is being heralded as a console seller by boosting sales by around 14,000. Persona 4: The Golden was the direct reason more than 20,000 Vitas being sold in its opening week.

            It’s a console seller.

Perhaps you argue because you do not understand the general characteristics of console sellers?

          • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

Just stop, this obviously isn’t getting anywhere.

          • XiC

Clearly you value your opinion more than anything. Here’s data saying you’re wrong and you’ll just say it isn’t getting anywhere?

I just gave you data that showed spikes in PS Vita sales during the week of Persona 4: The Golden’s release showing it moved consoles.

That’s pretty amazing, is this how it feels to talk to a Nintendo fanboy?

          • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

Still not a system seller to me. Black Ops Declassified moved Vita sales too, but that doesn’t make it a system seller.

And I say it isn’t getting anywhere, because once again, that isn’t proof saying P4 is a system seller. You and I obviously have different perspectives on what it means to be classified as one. To me, the proof you provided isn’t system seller standards to me.

So please, discontinue your obsession with me and your baseless assumptions.

          • XiC

“System seller is a kind of game that makes a consumer want to purchase a console primarily for that game.”

Seeing as you do not even understand the definition I can understand your idiotic view point. Sadly I can’t understand how you consistently argued your ridiculous opinion with the only proof being even more opinion.

This isn’t obsession in the least, this is good will in trying to educate the ignorant :]. You’re free to leave at any time, I allow it wholeheartedly.

          • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

There is your problem, you think your definition of a system seller is the correct one, when in reality it isn’t as cut and dried as you make it out to be. Niche titles don’t really fit the title of a system seller, since they are for a distinct, specialized market anyway. In Atlus’ case, the majority of their titles also happen to fall under the JRPG genre, which is dying/niche depending on how you look on it.

This is an argument of opinions, not facts. I don’t see how my opinion of Atlus games not being system sellers is incorrect, when the numbers I see (~500k on an install base of over 5M Vitas, which only provided a speed bump in sales as opposed to huge, sustained spikes in sales) and my definition of a system seller support that statement. You don’t like it? That’s fine.

          • XiC

It is the correct one, I took the self explanatory definition from the media and various websites. Moving an extra 14K consoles with the Pikmin 3 was enough for it to be called a system seller by many media sources. P4G out did that. That’s all facts not opinions.

It’s amazing to me that your own defining factor for a system seller is riding a trend. Lmao, oh my how idiotic.

It is nothing new for a JRPG to become a system seller as Fire Emblem Awakening was one along with various Final Fantasy titles.

You’ve mixed system seller up with “Killer App” but whatever you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about.

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_application

          • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

            Neither do you.

            Good day to you.

          • XiC

Coming from an idiot that doesn’t mean much. It’s a plain pity people actually read the BS you have to say :[.

        • tim

          i beg to differ.

          • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

The facts are against you. The highest selling Atlus title is Demon’s Souls, and even then that stands under 2 million. As far as I know, there is no other Atlus title that has broken a million units. You might buy a console for an Atlus game, but the sales and install base of the other consoles show that Atlus games aren’t system sellers.

          • XiC

By the way this is what I was disproving with that long comment. As you’re clearly unaware about the fan base of Atlus, the capability of Atlus to sell over a million, and incorrectly said the “facts are against you” I thought I’d correct you.

It’s too bad you’re one of those people who think their own opinion over fact.

      • Leo

Let Capcom, Square or Komani buys Atlus. Then Nintendo comes and buys all of them together. Lol

        • Daniel Gonzalez

You mean buy Capcom, Square and/or Konami? Lol. I’ll take that one as a joke.

  • Will.F. Martinez

I could see Nintendo buying Atlus, but I don’t see persona coming to the wiiu. Sony should some how acquire persona and Nintendo keep Atlus and there knowledgeable team.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

If they buy Atlus 100% which means their IP as well, then it will certainly come to the Wii U. Not like anyone would stop them at that point. It depends on how the auction goes.

    • XiC

lol that means Sony gets all the good stuff and Nintendo is literally just buying a studio. That makes no sense :D.

      • Andrew Chambers

That’s not true. Atlus is a great dev team, and an IP like Persona that had that much care put into it can’t be made by another company and be as good as the originals. Just look at games like Halo. What would you rather play, Halo or Destiny?

Plus, Persona isn’t the only IP that Atlus has.

        • XiC

          I’m obviously joking :].

My earlier posts were centered around Shin Megami Tensei and the collaboration. I know they own other franchises. My personal favourites would be Shining Soul and Ogre Battle.

I’m just saying that it’d make no sense for Nintendo to buy the studio and just literally give away the current best selling franchise of the studio.

          • Andrew Chambers

I find it unlikely that whoever bought them would ever split up the IPs. No matter what happens, I just hope Atlus comes out still being able to make and publish games.

          • XiC

Of course, the Atlus team is extremely experienced and their two current long running series are staples to their respective consoles.

Whoever buys them wouldn’t give that up and would be smart to continue to let Atlus bring in the cash.

  • Michael Jurado

    Nintendo all the way ^__^

  • XiC

If Nintendo can’t have third party support it might as well buy them.

    • JoeCamel_x87

Thats what they have been doing, moneyhatting for games. However they haven’t bought any new studios since monolith.

      • XiC

Well Nintendo has been investing in a lot of third parties whether they be indie or already published titles like Bayonetta 2. Perhaps a new studio isn’t as important as the games they’re producing. Either way Nintendo has the cash to burn on these endeavors.

I wrote more factual and sourced statements further down but I thought it could be summed up in that sentence.

  • Ducked

    I’ll stay quiet here since I’m a PlayStation fan…

    • Andrew Chambers

That’s my problem too, I would like Nintendo to buy them, but Nintendo fans don’t really care much for Persona, while Sony fans don’t really play SMT. If Nintendo won’t buy them Sony might. Maybe we’d all be better off if Namco-Bandi bought them…

Wow, people are really mad about me suggesting that a third party stays third party.

      • JoeCamel_x87

Nintendo fans don’t know if they like Persona games because they have always been Playstation exclusive. Its similar to saying Nintendo fans don’t like God of War.

        How do you know really?

        • tim

another dumbass, see my comment above

        • http://MacroManJr.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

You may have a point. Though, I think there’s a high chance that many Nintendo fans (most particularly North American Nintendo fans) might give Atlus series like Persona the pass, given the game’s darker tone.

While it’s true that many Nintendo fans do enjoy other games on other systems, and a good number of us enjoy some M-rated titles, just generally speaking, there’s still a large demographic of Nintendo gamers that don’t seem to have a taste for such kind of games.

Most Nintendo fans generally don’t like the more grittier, darker series. Most see the game in action and already have a sense that they wouldn’t enjoy such games. Again, there are exceptions (the games Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem and Resident Evil 4 were hits on Nintendo GameCube). But just generally, most Nintendo fans stick with Nintendo for a reason–Nintendo generally doesn’t do those “other” games.

I wouldn’t say these sort of fans are a larger demographic, but certainly a most sizable one, one that most obviously guides Nintendo’s target audience with games. The demographic among us of those who can enjoy a darker, more “mature” series like Persona is much smaller than with, say, among Sony fans–with which the series in the past saw most of its popularity.

I guess the true test will be Shin Megami Tensei IV, which just came out in North America last Tuesday. I haven’t seen any gaming news surrounding its sales figures yet, so I guess we’ll have to wait a little longer to see how it’s fared so far over here.

It’s selling well in Japan, with 188,562 copies sold in its first week, so it can sell well on a modern Nintendo platform. But that comes as no surprise, seeing how the Megami Tensei series is the third most popular series in Japan, right behind the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy franchises.

But I guess one thing the Japanese sales do show is that a Megami Tensei game can, in fact, sell well on a modern Nintendo system. Though, still, Atlus still does have a stronger following among Sony fans with their Megami Tensei series, which is kinda funny, since that series started on Nintendo’s Famicom.

Though, I still personally doubt its North American sales will see the nearly 200,000 copies Japan reached. The series is not as strong here in the West to begin with, and the least of all, I would think that Nintendo fans would generally support it more than the traditionally Sony fans have in the past.

Just speaking for myself, I’m not sure if the Shin Megami Tensei series will ever sell as well with Nintendo of America as, say, the more lighthearted Etrian Odyssey series has among many North American Nintendo fans. Even then, Etrian Odyssey in NA still doesn’t exactly see nearly the same high sales that Japan sees. Atlus games in general do better in Japan, and usually on a Nintendo portable or Sony console.

It does seem that many Nintendo fans among us do tend to not have a taste for darker games with grittier ratings. But hey, that’s just a generality, and not a guarantee. If Atlus got bought by Nintendo, it might prove good for Nintendo in some ways, but perhaps limiting Atlus’ market for their strongest series–the Megami Tensei series, which traditionally sees stronger support among Sony fans.

But that’s just speculative here, and just my opinion stated. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

        • Andrew Chambers

I think they would know by now. I don’t like GoW and I don’t play it. I’ve seen enough gameplay and have tried it a couple of times. If they don’t own a Sony system, then they probably don’t like Sony exclusives and vise versa.

Isn’t there a Persona game coming to the 3DS?

          • http://MacroManJr.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

Well, it’s Shin Megami Tensei IV, which is different than the Persona series (which is a sub-series, but behaves more like its own series). And SMT4 was released last Tuesday here in North America.

          • Andrew Chambers

I know SMTIV came out, I own it. I also know that there’s a new Etrian Odyssey coming soon.

I remember it being mentioned that Atlus was making it but then EO and SMTIV where announced and released and everyone kinda forgot.

      • CChaplin

        I’m a Nintendo fan, but I own an almost-exclusively Atlus-developed playstation collection.

        • Andrew Chambers

And does it bother you that Atlus releases on Sony systems? I’d say Atlus is one of the main reasons to own a Playstation, and they make a lot of money from it. I really want to see Nintendo succeed, and they will because it’ll take a lot of crappy launches and horrible mismanagement to kill that company, but I don’t want to see Atlus stuck to just one platform.

          • CChaplin

In the end though, even if Nintendo bought Atlus, I’d still buy playstation for my Kingdom Hearts fix. (Not Xbox, because between that and playstation, PS is the only one likely to have *other* games I might want). But that’s not going to stop my video game shelf from being Nintendo-dominated haha

      • Ducked

I think it be worth a shot, Bayonetta has been working smoothly so far…

        • Andrew Chambers

True, but Platinum games is still a third party.

      • tim

that’s not true man, i’m nintendo all the way, but you do realize that nintendo people play other things too. to say that nintendo people don’t care about persona? you’re fucking stupid. i think they should buy em for everything atlus brings to games. HELLO Ys remakes! why do people like you just say stupid shit?

        • Andrew Chambers

I say that based on sales. Sony players are more willing to buy Atlus games then Nintendo. Just look at their sales, with the exception of Tactics Ogre their top ten most profitable games are all on Sony systems.

And yes, let’s just ask for a bunch of remakes when Atlus should be using that amazing talent to bring new games to the platform. The Wii U does not need remakes it needs amazing exclusives to prove to the Xbots and Sony drones that the Wii U is worth owning.

And Atlus knows what they’re doing when they release games on different systems. Persona was a spin off of SMT, and Sony players really liked it. All of the top selling SM games on PS are Persona.

      • jcnba28

Altus have way more franchises on Nintendo systems then they do on Sony systems. All Sony has is Persona 4 and Catherine which was a multiplat.

        • Andrew Chambers

They have more then just those two. And SMT has been on Sony platforms since the PS1. And then there are the games that they published. Remember Demon’s Souls? You know, the highest grossing game that they published that spawned two sequels?

That’s the special thing about them, they’re willing to take risk and publish more obscure titles that no one else will. I find it unlikely a game like the Dark Spire would ever exist without Atlus.

  • ItzameyaToad

I say they should buy Atlus because it will benefit them in the long run. Imagine all the opportunities for getting back the money they invest in buying them, re-releasing of older Atlus games that never made it to Nintendo consoles, having new IP’s at there disposal, another talented studio to help with big projects etc. I see alot of positives for Nintendo if they buy Atlus and I hope they do.

  • LupineMP3j

N-no… Persona…. I’ve been waiting for forever to play Persona 5, and now it’s gonna go Nintendo-only…. *cries*

    • JoeCamel_x87

The idea of that happening is quite funny, but I have a Wii U so I don’t care either way.

      • LupineMP3j

Well that’s great for you but I can’t afford a Wii U atm… My big purchase for the summer was already made. I hope they at least keep it multiplatform…. Though I suppose that isn’t likely…. :(

Wait Nintendo never buys established Devs. That’s what I admire about them.

Would this be the first time?

    • JoeCamel_x87

Far from it, they have bought alot of smaller developers. Monolith Soft being the most modern (and largest) acquisition. Retro Studios, Intelligent Systems and Game Freak were earlier acquisitions.

There had been talk of Platinum or Mistwalker being in the cards, but no one expected Atlus until recently.

      • http://MacroManJr.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

Just one exception there–Intelligent Systems was developed by a Nintendo employee, never really acquired. They belonged two Nintendo from the start. ;)

      • Ice Climbers

Game Freak went to Nintendo from the beginning. Nintendo basically annexed them. Anyways, Retro Studios and Monolith Soft are Nintendo’s biggest acquisitions. Atlus and Platinum Games should be next. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sega became a 2nd party developer and subsidiary of Nintendo eventually.

  • JoeCamel_x87

I heard Persona 5 has been in development since 2011 and that Index was planning to do an official reveal in the coming months. This if nothing else proved the game was pretty far along.

A Nintendo buyout of Atlus would likely result in a delay but not a cancellation. Nintendo would likely just tell them to adapt the project for the Wii U.

    • Joe (ジョー)

Or maybe Atlus could release their current projects on the Xbox 360 & PS3 and then ports some of those games to Wii U…

      • JoeCamel_x87

Nintendo would probably not allow that.

  • Pikboss

    they should definitely buy it

  • benjie

Mabye if this happens. We get a new sequel for snowboard kids (highly doubt it but still). And I mean really snowboard kids. Not like the one from the ds… Do they still own snowboaed kids?

    • JoeCamel_x87

Nintendo has put an emphasis on more core games. At best you might get a sequel in the eshop somewhere along the line.

      • benjie

I already am happy if they release a HD remake of the first one.

  • Jon

hopefully they do buy it, they have deep pockets.

  • david jarman

    Pleeeeeeeease! Nintendo should purchase them!

  • TheGamerGeek128

I personally think it would be best of Namco-Bandai won the auction, that way Atlus would remain third party and not fanboys on either side would get up in arms about it.

    • JoeCamel_x87

If Namco-Bandai won Atlus all the games would still go to Playstation. Have you checked their release schedules lately?

      • CyanideInsanity

They’ve done several multiplats recently. Dark souls and dark souls 2, tekken X street fighter, naruto ultimate ninja storm 3, tekken tag tournament 2, ridge racer unbound, inversion, soul calibur 5, those are all from 2012 to now.

        • JoeCamel_x87

          On Xbox… lol

          • CyanideInsanity

Inversion, ridge racer, star trek, naruto, and a pacman game are also on PC. They haven’t done much in the way of handhelds recently, they skipped the wii, and probably have been skipping the wii u for the same reason as everyone else; the smaller install-base.

          • JoeCamel_x87

Nah its simple douchebaggery, Namco titles always do well on Nintendo systems. Even Tales of Symphonia outsold its playstation incarnation and they still made the HD version PS3 only.

They also ported a Wii exclusive TOS game to PS3 and left us with jack in NA. No multiplats on Wii U either.

      • TheGamerGeek128

Either way, I’d think it would be the most beneficial for everyone if they remained third party.
EDIT: Allow me to rephrase myself, I think it would be great if Nintendo bought Atlus, I just don’t want to see a repeat of the Bayonetta 2 reaction and yes, trolls STILL use that as ammo.

        • tim

          for you maybe

          • CyanideInsanity

It could potentially be the best option for everyone. If they remain 3rd party they can develop for any console they want/can. As first party they would not likely be allowed to develop for others, save for maybe any games already well into development. If nintendo or sony bought atlus, their games would only appear on wii u/3ds or ps4/vita respectively.

          • JoeCamel_x87

I’m honestly all for Nintendo buying them, and any other developer they can get their hands on. I’m tired of the lack of support.

          • TheGamerGeek128

Just throwing out my two cents about this affair. Can’t blame a guy for voicing his opinion.

    • Jon

with the support Nintendo gets from 3rd party, I hope they buy Atlas get get them as a first party, if not at least a first party then get bail them and get them exclusively a second party support. if they stayed 3rd party, you probably won’t see their games on the Wii U except for maybe some eshop shovelware.

For the record, this rumor stems from a less-than brilliantly written opinion piece. It’s not fact by any stretch of the imagination. But, it is something to think about. I personally would adore to see Atlus and Nintendo take their relationship to the next level. Persona Wii U would be the biggest announcement for a Nintendo console since Twilight Princess.

  • MujuraNoKamen

Ninty, buy then now! If you don’t then Sony will move in and you can wave bye bye to that SMT/Fire Emblem game. If you buy them thus securing securing the SMT franchise then Wii U will become a great platform for RPGs a bit like what happened on Wii with Xenoblade, Last Story etc.
    BUY NOW!!!

I’ve seen this opinion piece on VgChartz, Playeressence, MyNintendoNews, and now here… this is an opinion piece.

  • Scott Duperree

they should buy Atlus – and Platinum – and then travel back in time to purchase Rare and Silicon Knights

    • Robbyfishersora

Rare is not the same Rare that was back in 90’s lot of does people left.

      • Scott Duperree

I blame microsoft – I would like to have seen their development under Nintendo

Correct, i hate corporate sellouts ruining game franchises. the greatest example being banjo and kazooie.

    • Mohuz

they shouldn’t purchase Rare, they should purchase their IPs and let Retro work on them

  • Moreck

This would be a great acquisition for Nintendo! It would give them a fantastic 2nd-party RPG franchise as well as whatever else Atlus makes. Also, N needs as many exclusives as they can get, with all these 3rd parties freezing them out.

  • VerySad

Im very sad Losing hope… The whole Persona game has been on PlayStation P5 cant be on Wii U think about it Persona 5 probably wont be on 3ds but could on Wii U. PlayStation Owners use the #SonySaveAtlus @yosp on Twitter… Man Nintendo gets all the good games.

    • JoeCamel_x87

Funny to hear that coming from a Playstation fan. Sony has pillaged most of Nintendo’s third party library over the past several generations.

    • Your money

I’m assuming that u are a Play station fan correct? To put this in a kind way, Sony is winning the current gen so far. So if they owned Atlus with persona and shin megami tensei, this could put nintendo to the chopping block (xbox one was already failing to begin with). There has to be some competition here too. It would be interesting, Nintendo the gaming company vs. a gaming company made to compete due to nintendo’s actions.

  • Aaron

The way things are going with Nintendo and Atlus, I say buy the company. I mean they even have a deal in which if you buy FE and SMT, you can get $30 in store credit from the e-shop. I never seen a deal like that before. It’s a good indication of how good the relationship between Nintendo and Atlus is.

    • Your money

The possibility of Nintendo buying Atlus is very possible. As Aaron has stated, the deal with fire emblem and shin megami tensei 4 does seem to indicate some connection. However, Nintendo might have to look out for Sony, as many of Atlus’s games have been from play station.

      • Aaron

Great point. Sony will definitely fight for this one. It’s going to come down to who wants it more, or more like, who needs it more. From what I’ve read around the internet, unfortunately, most people aren’t taking the Wii U seriously as a competitive console against Xbox One or PS4. If Nintendo is able to buy a great studio like Altus, then they will not only have access to awesome franchises, but untimely send a message to competitors like Sony and Microsoft saying “You better watch out for us because we mean business. And we have the cash and franchises (adding Altus’ games) to prove it.” If Sony won, that’s fine also, but I believe that Nintendo has an opportunity to make a big statement and sell some more Wii Us at the same time:)

        • Robbyfishersora

I doubt sony is looking into buying a niche company, plus they don’t have cash to buy them. There looking more into western studios to compete with MS. There too busy getting pushing and marketing the PS4. Who knows.

          • Aaron

True, true. Looks like Shigeru Miyamoto was right about console giants fighting themselves to extinction (I know that won’t be the case). It gives Nintendo the chance to secretly gain the upper hand. Will they take the opportunity. We shall see, but I hope so.

          • Leo

I agree with Shigeru Myamoto. I think this is clearly the tendency of the industry. Sony and Microsoft are barking to each other like dogs disputing the same bone while Nintendo is like the wise cat looking from a distance just patiently watching they kill themselves.

  • TAKANYAN

    WII U!!!

  • Robbyfishersora

When is the bidding gonna start?

    • Mohuz

July 28th i believe, if it doesn’t get delayed

  • CMB

I want to see this happen, please do it

  • Arthur Jarret

I’m a bit on the fence on this one. As most of you know, Atlus doesn’t only develop games but they’ve worked on translating and exporting JP exclusive games they didn’t make themselves as well.

If nintendo bought them, would they still get the freedom to do that? Or would they simply be stuck as another development-only team?

In light of this, I’d hope they are bought by a console-independent group that is not called EA – and will continue with the current trend of working to bring their games to nintendo systems…

However, I also thoroughly enjoyed the games they brought to ps3 (such as 3d dot game heroes) – so I hope they get the chance to work on the ps4 as well.

    • Robbyfishersora

Nah EA doesn’t care about them cuz atlus don’t make boring shooters or western style games. I’m petty sure nintendo will still let them make the games they want.

      • Arthur Jarret

Yeah, but making games is something different entirely from being able to take an existing game by someone else (by doing a poll on your website to see which one fans want) and localize it…
games like Catherine (from deep silver) and 3d dot game heroes I mentioned (by silicon… something, i forgot) – there are many games I never would have experienced without Atlus localizing them.

So I’m afraid a company that didn’t even localize some of it’s flagship franchises everywhere might ruin that track record

On the other hand, pushing their full resources into making games like SMT might also be a good thing.

        • Robbyfishersora

Oh yeah I see what you talking about some of those of games are not made by them just publish by them to be honest I don’t what will happened to them. Catherine was made by them, the only game ever made for current gen consoles. I guess a other company like NISA could bring those games here in america.

          • Arthur Jarret

            Oh really? Didn’t know that…
What’s deep silver done to deserve a credit in the front of my box then? Ha, shows how much I know… but I did love Atlus when they asked the community what game they should localize… wish they would do that more often.

If they become part of nintendo, they should immediately start on the localization of mother 1 and 3… then continue to localize all the cool games the EU never got… like mario super sluggers, Baten kaitos origins and excitebots (as non-exclusive HD versions, of course)

I think you mean Atlus USA not the one in japan.

          • Arthur Jarret

Yes… not to mention their fairly recent publishing arrangement with NIS to publish their games in europe… sometimes 4 months late, but at least we got them. I wonder what’s going to happen with such a deal if the owner changes?

Will atlus RPG games be the next ‘earthbound’ and ‘super mario rpg’ for europe? (or, to stay on topic and give a recent atlus-related example, SMT: Strange journey… which I had to import, but which was …so worth it!)

If they do buy them I hope they do a remake of Snowboard kids that game was awesome on N64

Either buy Atlus or let it crash & hire the staff. 1st option might be better to kick Sony off the table.

  • sedoi

    please anyone but Nintendo

    • JoeCamel_x87

      You should be happy.

    • Elem187

I would love to see Nintendo purchase Atlus just because the meltdowns would be soooooooooooooo epic.. I would buy futures in popcorn because the show will be EPIC… the best entertainment money can buy is Sony fanboy rage over Nintendo

PERSONA ON WII U PLZ! Nintendo BUY EM!
    BUYYYY EM!

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

I would say: Do it N! They can afford them and probably need them the most as well. Back to the nes and snes days, plenty of games from Atlus, they have many jewels which should be resurrected.

  • DR. BEES

WHAT IF PERSONA 5 WAS EXCLUSIVE TO THE WII-U ‘DUNNNN DUNNNN DUUNNNNNNNNNNN’ (i would cry)

  • Mohuz
