Sakurai explains why fighting characters aren’t in Super Smash Bros.

super-smash-bros-wii-u-3

Masahiro Sakurai has been both very vocal and candid with fans who have questions about the development process of Super Smash Bros. In a recent Games TM interview, Sakurai confirmed exactly why fighting characters don’t appear in Super Smash Bros. His reasoning is that since the character is already known for fighting, it just doesn’t bring much to the table.

“The biggest feature we look at in Smash Bros. is, ‘What does this character bring to Smash Bros. that other characters don’t?’ If you look at… someone from a fighting game already, and people like fighting with this character, from my point of view, it’s like ‘this guy does what this guy already does. He fills the role that this character already has.”

It’s interesting to see his take on this and he mentions in the interview that Mega Man is a special case and is being treated a bit different because of it. He hints that because of this special consideration, other third party characters joining the roster will likely be very thin.

      • TaintedXGamer

Pacman could go in, there’s his upcoming Wii U game. In B4 they add him and make his Final smash into a Pacman game for at least 20-30secs

I don’t want Pac man, seems out of place retro or not

This is why i like smash bros. its the most unique fighting game of today. The gameplay, the characters.Anyone who thinks smash bros should be like other fighting games is an idiot.

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

It doesn’t make sense to take a character that is already known for being in a fighting game over to Smash Bros. Much of the charm of Smash Bros comes from the fact it takes video game characters out of their usual game roles and brings them into a fighting competition game.

    • Mario

      DUUHHH!!!

  • The Clockwork Being

It’s good not to have only fighters. I mean some of the best characters in Smash Bros like Capt.Falcon aren’t fighters in their games. The more unique fighters the better it will be. This is what makes Smash Bros unique and will make unique characters. I as a SSB fan will have a top five on every game and afterwards I try to master every other character just so I can fight with everyone of them.

  • Ian Settlemyer

I was hoping that Little Mac would join in the game. He’s the only fighting character I’d like to see. He might be the only exception.

    • Mr. J

      Who’s little Mac

      • Starfoxguy

He is a boxer from the game Punch Out.

        • Mr. J

          Ooohhhhh now I remember

        • Me Gusta

Me Gusta Mike Tysons punch out, buy now on your NES.

      • YoG99

oh my god, are we already that old that younger ones don’t know little Mac ?

        • Mariokartfann

Well, there WAS a Wii game that brought me to this gem-I mean game series

          • YoG99

            Well … I’m that old then :)

  • Starfoxguy

    Well that’s understandable.

  • Jake

I would still like to see little Mac

  • Henry Hotspur

I wouldn’t even consider Megaman a “special case” or any sort of exception. Yes, he was in a couple of fighting games, but his moveset was terrible. And never-mind the fact that Sakurai is using him in a direction that Capcom didn’t try.

    • JB

This! And the fact that Mega Man didn’t originate from a fighting game, like say someone from Tekken or Street Fighter.

      • Mario

True. To me, he’s more of a shooter then a fighter. Plus, the fights he does on his games are a little more strategic then fighting.

        • Drew

Even Link has been in a fighting game. I agree that Megaman isn’t a special case.

          • Mario

Link has been in puzzle games as well you know.

  • LopsidedPasta

This makes a lot of sense. Heck, when you see Super Smash Bros (any of them) the whole enjoyment of the character roster is the lack of unity. Platformer character over here. Whoa! RPG kid here. Racer dude here! It’s a mixing bowl of Nintendo and their franchises. Adding Ryu wouldn’t give people the same reaction as adding Mega Man. We’ve seen it before, and the move pool for those characters would be too shallow. Thanks for reading my 2 cents.

    • Clel

      You’re welcome!

    • jay

      Some people get it :)

  • Steven_Segal

And I wanted Chuck Norris to appear… but at least Reggie is still in the race (not a fighter)

    • Brandon Gardner

      • Steven_Segal

        LOL

  • Joel

Damn, I was really hoping for Jin Kazama to appear.

  • sdmac200600

So basically this confirms little mac won’t be playable. I don’t understand why people wanted fighting game characters in smash when the whole point of smash is to take characters that you would never see fighting fight.

    • Assassinated23

Little Mac is a different kind of fighting game character though. It’s not like Street Fighter or Tekken, its almost more of a puzzle game figuring out how to beat each opponent (or so I’ve been told). I could see him working as a smash bros character.

      • sdmac200600

Yeah but that also applies to all fighters. You can’t just go in mashing buttons and expect to win. You have to read your opponent in order to figure out how to win. That and boxing is fighting :P

        • Assassinated23

You can’t deny that Punch Out and Tekken are very different kinds of games though. Boxing may be fighting, but I wouldn’t put punch out in the same category as competitive fighting games. It feels like it should be different enough to not be disqualified from Smash Bros.

          • sdmac200600

True. They are very different fighters. However, he never specified what type of fighting characters and fighting game. He just said fighting characters so I’m assuming he means anything from the highly competitive MvC all the way down to Punch Out. It would only make sense.

    • Beat

I think he was talking more along the lines of third party characters

      • sdmac200600

I think he was talking about fighting characters as a whole. Otherwise he would’ve said something along the lines of “We are however experimenting with our own fighting characters (I.E Little Mac) to see if we can make them unique.”

        • Mochlum

That would kind of spoil the surprise of possibly seeing him, though. And I think Sakurai was referring more to generic fighter type characters.

    • sup3rnoah

when you say the point of smash, you mean fighting each other right?

      • sdmac200600

No…I said the point in the comment…”the whole point of smash is to take characters that you would never see fighting fight.”

        • sup3rnoah

erm… i’d say the point is to bring all nintendo characters together into one game and see how they fair up against one another. because come on, link fights… megaman fights. not every character is like the wii fit trainer where it’s just like woah, they dont belong in a fighting game.

          • sdmac200600

Link isn’t in a fighting game. Megaman isn’t in a fighting game. (besides smash of course and SxT for Megaman) Link is in a action/adventure/puzzle game and Megaman is in an action/adventure. Little Mac is known for a boxing which is a type of fighting game.

          • sup3rnoah

Yes I know that. But how does Link save Zelda, how does he defeat bosses? He fights enemies, with a sword. Yeah It’s not a street fighter/mortal kombat type fighting style, but he still fights, it’s not like if Link never was in smash, and now he was suddenly brought in, everyone wouldnt be like WOAH OMG LINK DOESNT BELONG IN A FIGHTING GAME. Same thing goes for megaman, he defeats bosses with fighting, yeah not martial arts fighting, but he has is array of moves.

          • sdmac200600

Yes they fight but Sakurai is specifically talking about characters in fighting games. That excludes any other genre with fighting elements. Now as I said, yes they fight however them fighting is a sub genre of their main game. Megaman is a action platformer actually. I needed to correct that. Platforming is the main focus of the game. In Zelda, the main focus of the game is being on an adventure solving puzzles. The fighting is just a plus. Going by your logic, Smash would only have Peach, G&W, Wii Fit trainer, ROB and probably like 4 more characters because everyone else fights in some way in their game.

          • sup3rnoah

That’s not my logic. That’s yours, “the point is to take characters that you would never see fighting fight”. So then only those characters would be in your smash. Yes the fighting is a subgenre, and I know it’s not the main point of the game. But we already have a feel of how they fight. I’m trying to get across to you that the point of smash is to see Nintendo characters together, in one game, fighting each other, yes some may be more cut out to be a “fighter” but it’s still to see how they compete with one another.

          • sdmac200600

But when I say fighting, I mean fist to fist, kick to kick. While my logic is flawed with sword wielding characters such as Link, The smash roster don’t have many sword wielding characters. I say this is your logic because you said “But how does Link save Zelda, how does he defeat bosses? He fights enemies, with a sword…It’s not a street fighter/mortal kombat type fighting style, but he still fights” and ” Same thing goes for megaman, he defeats bosses with fighting…” Using that logic, Mario fights by jumping on enemies heads. Samus shoots a “gun” to fight. Fox pilots an aircraft that shoots to fight enemies.

          • sup3rnoah

Well for me, i’m getting confused on our argument, and a little sick of it. I get what you’re trying to say, I think we’re both correct here.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Link was in Soul Calibur invalid logic

          • sdmac200600

……………………………..Is that Link’s main game………………………….That’s just like saying Megaman is a fighter because he is in Streetfighter X Tekken…………………….YOUR logic is invaild.

  • Brandon Gardner

This game will be amazing but I guess I am the only one who kinda liked the story mode in the last super smash bros game lol…. Kinda disappointed that no type of story mode or cutscenes will be in this one.

    • Squid

Those things were epic my favorites were the Lucario Vs Meta Knight part.

    • PS4/WiiU

What do you mean, they never said the there was no story mode or cutscenes in this one. They haven’t said a single thing about super smash yet. Right now they are just announcing the new characters. I’m pretty sure that there will be a story mode

  • XelaFury

Makes a lot of sense, characters from fighting games like Tekken or Street Fighter wouldn’t fit in SSB4 because SSB’s fighting system is very different from the traditional fighting system. Talking about which characters we would like to see in SSB4…… I think Pac-man, Daisy & Dillon have a chance to be in the game.

  • MichaelEhrgott

I want Slippy Toad or Peppy Hare added. “Do a barrel roll motherfu%*&@”

    • Starfoxguy

      What about Krystal?

      • MichaelEhrgott

        Sure!

  • Squid

Geno, Klonoa, and Takamaru are my most wanted characters. Sadly I doubt Geno would be in it.

  • Madmagican

hmm, and I was hoping Little Mac and Knuckle Joe would make it
I dunno anymore; they’re basically fighters even though their games don’t really take part in the genre

  • Squid

    He’s coming.

    • atl hawks

just put on your siren deputy

      • Squid

        Wii U…. Wii U…

        • atl hawks

          haha

    • Mario

      RUN PATRICK!!!! RUN!!!!

  • Ice Climbers

Mega Man, Snake, and Sonic should be the only third party characters.

  • atl hawks

But I want little mac :(

  • http://nintendopapercraftvideos.wordpress.com/ Sam

I think it’s because Nintendo wants Smash Bros. to be family friendly; all those stupid fighting games that are rated M aren’t family friendly.

    • Beat

Really there aren’t that many fighting games rated M… Most are rated T. Except for things like Mortal Kombat of course.

    • Merrfn

Give me back my profile picture you sly dog!

      • Mario

Why? Your profile picture looks awesome!

        • Merrfn

I used to have the mushroom he has. Then I changed it after seeing two other people with the same one, lol!

  • shoeses47

As much as I dislike the fact that characters like Villager and Wii Fit Trainer are in this game instead of Mewtwo, I’d much rather have them in the game than someone like freakin’ Scorpion. Wouldn’t even make sense…

    • sup3rnoah

Well we can’t give up hopes on your wanted characters, they’re still 20 more characters to see. Sakurai did say he was considering Mewtwo.

  • Rax189

Ty the tasmanian tiger would make a good 3rd party character in the game :) http://goo.gl/6a0G9D

    • 00EpicGamer00

I love TY! I miss his games so much! I hope one day, they makes an HD collection (but didn’t Krome studios go out of business, or something?)

  • CaesarGood

    bullshit..

  • Reece

When will the game come i was going to get it this year

  • Ace J

well i guess i can stop hoping for Little Mac to appear in ssb4

  • DingoWalley

That’s fine Sakurai. Just add Little Mac from Punch Out, and maybe King Hippo too, and I won’t ask for any more fighter characters.

  • Mochlum

I still think Little Mac isn’t unlikely. He seems to be different then the average fighting game character so he would be a pretty good fighter.

    • rp17

To be honest, Punch-Out is more a a puzzle game disguised as a fighting game. Still love it though!

      • Merrfn

Yeah it isn’t a button smashing fighter. It’s all reactions.

  • Uh Mazing

Well, Little Mac was my most wanted character besides megaman and paper mario, I guess he’s not coming. Maybe they’ll at least play the punch out theme for the boxing ring.

    • Andrew Chambers

Little Mac might still be possible. I think he’s avoiding fighting characters because their moveset would be very restricted. Why would a Tekken fighter join Smash Bros and only use eight of his 50+ moves? While Little Mac only had about four moves.

  • Tails the Foxhound

That’s really dumb, someone like Ryu would only make another Shoto-clone feel redundant, there is no one that Ryu’s presence would diminish.* I think he’s just making up excuses so he can keep using the characters he wants.

*For the record, much as I would LIKE Ryu, we’ve already got Megaman. Ryu’s just being used as an example here.

  • JamesJose

when I saw megaman coming, I was really excited that we could see ryu as a playable character, guess not :(

  • DragonSilths

I don’t know what kind of characters he is even referring to…

    • sup3rnoah

Characters from fighting games, for example: street fighter, soul calibur, marvel vs capcom, dragonball z perhaps, mortal kombat, characters that were made to fight each other. yeah mario and link kill bad guys, but mario’s main goal is to run to the end of the level, not fight other people. and Link also fights, but he has to to save Zelda. Did i help at all?

  • Andreas Sunde

Just put Reggie as a Mii in there, and we will never complain about anything you do, ever.

  • Christian Schoff

Please, please, please don’t exclude Sonic.

    • Me Gusta

      Me Gusta sonic the hedgehog.

      • Mario

Me Gusta Sonic the hedgehog too.

    • Mario

That’s one character I wish they don’t exclude for sure.

  • Shelim Uddin

I really wanted ryu from SF on this game but he wouldnt fit in.

  • Merrfn

That villager looks downright possessed. He will remain in my dreams. nightmares…screaming…running…axe…death…

  • Demomanx

    What?

  • Merrfn

I know this means we probably won’t get hime but little Mac would be AMAZING! I am 16 and Mike Tyson’s Punch Out is my favourite game ever. It is just so fun. A fighting game that takes skill and strategy rather than button smashing. If Nintendo made an exception and shoved in little Mac as a surprise it would make my year.

  • Your money

    Interesting point sakurai.

  • Saul Strange

Viewtiful Joe would fit perfectly in a SSB game. He even had his own Smash Bros. style brawler game on Gamecube called ‘Red Hot Rumble’. It’d be so easy for the developers to work him into the game, fingers crossed!

    • ItsMeBeaches

Viewtiful Joe is who i wanna see the most!!!!!!!!!!

Since they added MegaMan, im sure they can add Viewtiful. A fellow can hope cant he?

  • Aaron

I wonder if they might add a character from Shin Magami Tensi. That would be cool:)

  • I_I

after I’ve seen both Mega man and Villager I don’t care about fighting characters however, I do want see Travis touchdown from no more heroes and Midna from Zelda TP and the Mii’s

    • bakedapplepie

      Midna would be really great.

  • Møhåmmęd Jårmøn

I wonder what new Pokemon Characters will be playable fighters. Mewtwos new form? Gen 6 pokes? Hmmm

  • Sora Morp

still want sonic to be confirmed
