Wii U system update 3.1.0 U now available for download

wii_u_gamepad_system_update_screen

Nintendo has released a system update for the Wii U, bringing the firmware version for the console up to 3.1.0 U. This is not the substantial summer update that Satoru Iwata promised in an earlier Nintendo Direct, but rather an update for features added in the spring update. The summer update is now scheduled to take place between the end of September and the beginning of October.

Here is a list of the new improvements for this update:

  • The standby functions will now regularly connect to the Internet when the Wii U is powered down to check for available SpotPass data or software and system updates. Software updates will be installed while the Wii U is powered down, and system updates will be installed the next time the Wii U is powered on. For further detailed information, click here.
  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.

I can wait with the update. Perhaps they could be planning something big. Its better to test an update and make sure it won’t brick your system

    • Baum 「ツリー」

Yeah I’d rather wait and have some bigger updates, than the (almost) daily updates on PS3 sometimes :/

People today became way to impatient…If I’m imagening, how I waited 2 years for MH3U and almost 7 years for FF13-Versus/FF15 and those guys can’t even handle three months.

      • Johny

exactly. several years of waiting for monster hunter for me. and then it was 2013 and i was like… OMG OMG OMG .. only 3 more months… WHERE did the time go….and then played the demo and got over 20 hours on it (3ds and wii u demo combined). and now that its out,… damn does it feel good.

      • Dez

It’ll be about 2 years before Blizzard finally gives D3 the itemization revamp is has desperately needed since launch. It took 12 years of waiting for StarCraft II to launch, and 2 1/2 years for Heart of the Swarm. I think if you are a Blizzard gamer you need to have patience since Blizzard works at a snail’s pace.

Anyway, my condolences. You should drop Square Enix already, they haven’t made a good game since Kingdom Hearts, and there hasn’t been a good Final Fantasy since IX, you know when its creator was still around make sure they didn’t break the formula. Frankly I thinks SE is just a load of crap and re-releasing crap no asked or cares for, they are all about pretty graphics and mobile devices, they don’t care about quality stories or good gameplay anymore.

        • Baum 「ツリー」

Well I actually never cared about SE, It’s just that I liked the looks of FF15 since the very first trailer ;)

    • NintendoNoob

Being able to listen to music while playing games, doing Wii U chat while playing games (Wii U chat will become a multi-tasking app)

      • Shigeru Miyamoto

Voice chat or a party system is what I want.

        • DragonSilths

Iwata said before Wii U launched Party Chat would come at some point. Just not at launch.

          • Matthew Lynn Wallace

where was this posted that we would officially get cross game group chat? i want proofs sir

          • DragonSilths

It was either at E3 2011 or an Investors meeting. He only said “Party Chat” He didn’t say Cross Game group chat.

  • bigha6900

Nice I like that keep on making the wii u batter

    • Bill Wildaman

Are we making Wii U pancakes this morning? ;p

  • Ballzbeard

Curious to see what the Sept-October updates bring.

        • Cloud W Omega

your birthday is all of October? i feel sorry for the person who bore to you for a whole month.

          • lozman1122

All of October and a little of November. I try not to brag :)

          • Clel

            Wow

        • Elem187

I feel ya, my birthday is on the 7th, the wife celebrates the entire month for me, as I return the favor for the entire month of Febuary for her.

          • lozman1122

Same with me and my girlfriend! We’ve been dating for a few years now, and I’m getting ready to pop the question :)

          • Elem187

Do it… having someone always in your corner is totally worth having that support.

          • Clel

Tell us when/if you do! We’ll pop a beer (or kool-aid, nya nya nya nya nya) with you and congratulate you (at least I will).

Lol I’ll be sure to share when I do:)

So you are going to dress up like Mario and ask her to be your Princess Peach?

          • Dez

He should dress up as Link and ask her to be his Zelda instead.

          • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Either way he is going to end up having to save a Princess after she gets kidnapped.

          • Dez

            lol

        • DragonSilths

My birthday is also October. 15th to be precise. So I get Windwaker HD, Pokemon X, and the update as a birthday gift from Nintendo lol. October will be great.

          • TheGMO808

A birthday gift from Nintendo.. that costs money. lol

    • Michael DeVore

If it’s before September 22nd, fall equinox, then it’s technically still Summer.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Depends how late it is… Summer does not end until the end of September anyway so it may only be a few days late of being summer. ;)

    • Noah Hood

I wonder what the summer update will change. I really hope that there will be some new features!

    • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, I agree 100% with all you guys. This is yet another lie from Nintendo’s propaganda machine. This proves that they try to keep up the shittiness of Wii U for as long as possible by not fixing the flaws and errors incompetent and sake drunk programmers inflicted on the console. If Iwata would focusing more on his job instead of stealing money from small children alot could have been avoided. But clearly money comes first.

      • Adam Porter

        what?

  • AlThor

    Thanks for the notification Ashley!

  • andré

this sucks nintendo. when do you going to stop disappoint me.

    • Baum 「ツリー」

Then do it yourself, if you could make it better …

      • andré

i loved nintendo all my life, but they promise things all the time that they cant keep.

        • Jimmy D. Fugate

As with almost every other game company: Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar Games, etc….

    • kenny Johnson

Why are you disappointed? What are you expecting the Summer update to do? Why are you even looking forward to it?

      • andré

because when something get announced, i get excited:)))
but then they say, noo, you have to wait. i wanted to see the improvements of the Wii U that they whould make.
i have no idea why i got excited. its just funny to get new stuff.
but , its nothing more than just wait till later..

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Unfortunately this is very common in most (if not all) technology companies these days.

    • Elem187

Why would Nintendo bend over backwards to please people that hate Nintendo?
Nintendo should concentrate their talents on pleasing their fans not their critics.

      • andré

i dont hate them, if you think so.
i love them, but they have been lazy in the new things lately. its just the same old all the time, i love the classics, but i want something new,
give me super mario 69, then i would have jump backwards in the air and touchdown crashing.. super mario 3d land look ok thow

  • Noel Canales

what about my issue with Netflix and hulu always freezing my system every other time I load it. the handheld go blank and all I hear is sound?

    • kenny Johnson

I’ve never had the problem with Netflix.

      • Noel Canales

THEN I HAVE A LEMON OF A SYSTEM, I got off of cableTV so I use NETFLIX AND huluplus for my tv and for the kids. saves me a ton of money. and I just borrow my friends hbogo account and use hdtv rabbit ear antenna for local channels

        • Christopher Acuna

Tis the way to go. Saving hundreds of a dollar just working off the internets. And if the internet goes I have a ton of blu-rays and games to keep me busy. And you know there’s always that outdoor life I hear so much about.

          • Noel Canales

Exactly. I also share an mlbtv.com acct with my brothers across the country.

        • Michael DeVore

Hulu has regular problems due to the commercials. They error on the side of “we must show you a commercial no matter what”. Netflix has issues, but far fewer due to it not jumping between video streams.

If you have a laptop or PC near your Wii try pinging your modem to see if you have packet issues. If it’s not 1ms and 0% loss then you have an issue with your home network that changing providers, or systems, wont fix.

The Hulu and Netflix apps aren’t robust enough to handle even a tiny transmission error. The patches have been helping reduce the hard crashes, but they aren’t at 100% yet. At least their not as bad as the YouTube app. That thing is cursed, but the browser removes the need for that monster.

    • Ian Woodall

Mine also freezes but I find if I wait a little longer after turning on the system it works fine maybe you could try the same? Its a pain and a fix would be nice and hopefully this latest update will help.
Also bring on the winter of Nintendo games and hopefully some great new features from the Autumn update. Although if it arrives by September 21st I suppose that is still technically summer or at least close too right?

  • thedeciderU

when is art academy/the gamepad art software launching? i thought iwata said this summer. would be fun to play with.

    • Clel

      Summer just started :D

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

C’mon… Summer started 2½ weeks ago… They should have all the summer stuff released by now. Nintendo is so slow..

    The firmeware version is being put up to 3.1.0 U! 3. +1. +0 =4 Pikmin 4 Confirmed

    • wober2

      oooooh i like your math!

    • Clel

      And 3 + 1 + 0 = 310! Final Fantasy 310 confirmed!

      • RockieOllie

I thought it was the wonderful 101′s sequel The wonderful 310.. I think i messed up some where in my calculations…

  • Wanderlei

OS seems faster and Monster Hunter loads faster too.

    • Johny

you sure its not just a placebo effect?

      • Wanderlei

Nah definitely not. The lag from when you press the game icon to when the game actually starts loading is significantly reduced.

  • YogiGRB

nice, plus Lego City U is tad bit faster to

    • Johny

      it is ?

      • YogiGRB

        just a very little bit

    • wober2

that would be amazing if it could cut down on those load screens

  • Srpg2ishere

I sure am glad I have a Wii U. Now all I have to do is get a new PC.( Which will probably take like 2 years.) XD

    • SirDjss

Agreed, i actually have a wii u and a pc for all the multiplats not commin to the wii u . So i dont mind that there arent so many games commin for wii u at the moment :)

    • Clel

*psst* *psst* “PC/Wii U combo is much better than (PS4 or X1)/Wii U combo” *runs away from gun shots*

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I already have the X1 and I use it to watch TV and Sports and use voice commands to search and watch on demand/streamed programming. Of course this X1 is from Xfinity.

      • NkoSekirei

the best combo is pc/wii u/ps4 while xboxone eats their dust

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

That is my combo.. Wii U and a Reasonable quadcore PC with a Mid-high range video card that cost about $300. Total cost of the PC was about $650 which is a bit more than the consoles from Microsoft and Sony but way more versatile and I do not have to worry as much about my older games not being playable when I upgrade. Plays all the games I have thrown at it (including Crysis 3 which I got free) at 60+FPS at 1080P with no issues. I think the only reason to get a XB One or PS4 (or even the Wii U for that matter) is for the exclusives. Of course the Wii U adds the gamepad which I have to say adds a pretty nice element to gaming. Some games it is nice to have that gamepad screen for extras and interactive controls for the game.

  • Agent X

Next time try editing your articles before you post them. ‘For further detailed information, click here’ doesn’t work

  • Johny

ok nintendo. seriously, this is a thing that is an unproffesional flaw with the system.
you gave us the gamepad, and multiple other controll schemes that are compatibile with wii u. when i play monster hunter, i ALWAYS play with only my classic controller pro. im IRRITATED because the gamepad always turns on, and is just there on the shelf, draining its battery. the only way to make it NOT being turned on when playing games with other controllers is either if the battery is completely empty, and you turn the system on then, or if you get it out of range… its annoying, and really not eco friendly.
PLEASE let us turn the controller off without turning the system off at the same time. its not much to ask

    • dubYA

You CAN turn the GamePad off. Just hit the Home Button, click “Controller Settings”, and then click “Display Off”.

And there you have it. Now, you can play on your other controllers without the GamePad wasting energy.

      • Johny

umm no. that doesn’t turn it off.
        1. its still connected/turned on
        2. battery still drains PRETTY FAST

        • Zakariyya Al-Quran

yeah but the thing that eats up battery on all devices is always the screen, especially if it is a touch display

    • Mitchell

Totally agree with you, this is something I noticed when playing MH3U. I think N should roll out an update to enable us to turn off the gamepad to save battery and extend the live of the device itself while using the pro controller. Don’t get me wrong I love the gamepad, and the whole experience it brings to gaming, but sometimes and on some games, the classic way is just good enough.

One great thing I`ve been able to do is configure the gamepad to show the same as the TV, and configure the controller pro to play, that way I use the gamepad as a small TV only for viewing, while the controller pro to play the game. My wife loves that, since she can see her programs as usual.

Wii U has a lot of good stuff and a huge potential, we only need something we have lost on time (IMAGINATION)

I can’t describe good enough how much I enjoy playing on my console. I only need more titles out and more constant, so far I’m happy with Wii U and I’m not a fanboy kid, I’m a 35 years old gamer that work, have a home and family, but also have time for gaming.

      From Panama City, Panama

      • Johny

thank you for such a good reply. im experiencing it THE SAME. i LOVE IT . i LOVE monster hunter and i LOVE using the gamepad as a mini-tv, while the TV is free to use for others. for a huge monster hunter fan, this is a dream come true. when i played tri on wii, i had to quit online matches SOOO many times because of constant tv-possession-struggle. all problems are now gone with the gamepad. it really has a huge potential. but still. when i DONT use it, and use other controllers that dont need the gamepad, i’d like to turn it off completely to:
1- prolong the whole life of the gamepad (i already have 500+ hours on monster hunter) because .. yeah.. they aren’t really cheap you know?… also its battery. and
2- save some energy. why completely waste it if i dont have to…

  • Johny

ok alot of people are saying the system runs faster and that some games load faster too..
can anyone say if thats really true ? im not really buying it. its probably just a placebo effect for 90% of people -.-

    • audi lover

Mines running fractionly faster just compaired load times on you tube about 2secs faster so marginally really

    • LinksCafe

Are you referring to today’s new update, or the last major update that happened earlier this year?

The last system update (the one we were all waiting for) definitely gave my Wii U a boost in speed. I can say that with 100% certainty. For example, when loading up Nintendo Land, I would always look forward to the little jingle that would play while the game booted up. With the last update, Nintendo Land now loads so fast that I no longer get a chance to appreciate the jingle, lol. No complaints though. I really like the fast loading times.

      • Johny

yeah im reffering to THIS update.
i know. the previous big update WITHOUT a doubt increased all loading times pretty much by a really noticable margin

      • Tim van Broekhoven

        That haha ^^

  • Ducked

What I want is a updated Wii U Pro Controller. Add a headset jack so I won’t have to plug it in my gamepad, add analog triggers, and motion for it.

    • wober2

i am pretty sure if they added analog triggers no wiiu game could use them unless they add the feature in the games too. I have yet to play a racing game are the digital triggers really bad?

      • Ducked

There not horrible, but it takes time getting used to.

        Also to add:

I’m hoping the Wii U will release more colors for the pro controller like blue and red.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I miss the analog triggers too but they were removed due to a patent violation I think. I think Microsoft lost the right to use that technology as well so I wouldn’t be surprised if the new XB One controller does not have analog triggers either.

I have not played a racing simulator on the Wii U yet like NFS so I am not sure how the lack of analog triggers affects the game. I would be interested to hear how these games control the speed of your vehicle without those triggers. In cart racing games that does not matter as much but in Racing Simulators like NFS or the upcoming Project Cars I think analog triggers for at least the gas is extremely beneficial.

      • Ducked

NFS Most Wanted really could have used them! It was awkward since I played most of my racing games back in my 360 days.

However, you have a good point there. It’s probably won’t be that big of a deal, but it still needs motion and a headset jack.

  • wober2

Love to see my little wiiu led orange instead of red. Makes me think it is not fully dead i guess… One thing that seems shocking to me is that the wiiu at launch and even till now has not been as polished as the wii was during its launch. Really makes me think nintendo launched too early, the console was not ready.

  • Jason Setley

Please give us a real interface, I’m running out of empty boxs

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Maybe once those fill up extra pages are added. Kind of like smartphones… Of course I wouldn’t mind the idea of grouped boxes where I can put similar games in one box or folder and expand that.

      • Daniel Brown

        You mean like the 3DS?

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Yep… pretty much like that. With all the games I have now I can consolidate Games in folders like Mario Games, Mega Man, Metroid… etc.. Sure beats scrolling through page after page.

  • The_Colourful_Jester

Would there be any concerns about bricking your console with a silent system download?

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Minimal unless there is a power outage.. That is why they do not have the update apply silently.. It applies the next time the system is powered on and only downloads while in standby.

  • bizzy gie

    Just downloaded the update.

What does the summer update do?

    • sd

Enables you to download updates when the console is turned off. Thats about it. Pretty useful actually as i think a lot of wiiu owners unfortunately have their consoles turned off a lot at the moment.

      • barwiifan

Thanks, but I mean what the summer update that everyone is talking about does. Not this update, but the future one.

        • sd

Yeah sorry. The only thing I know for sure is that it will add another speed update when moving between menus. Maybe the TV II thing as that doesnt exist for most people in other countries. Other than that Im not sure what else it will do.

          • barwiifan

            Ok, thanks.

  • Jim Mack

TiVO update that was due in January…..still not out.

    • sd

In Aus TVii or whatever it is on the WiiU doesnt do anything full stop. We also dont get half the digital games at release so i had to create a uk account on the wiiu to buy them. (im assuming everyone knows you can do this with an aus WiiU and buy from europe).

  • Bill Bong

The wii U is not even one year old an the firmware is up to version 3. The PS3 is 7 years old and only on version 4.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

And Google Chrome came out in 2008 and is already on version 27 or 28.. Point is don’t be so focused on the revision of the software or firmware.

    • https://soundcloud.com/rauschenmaschine Kristian Kouvo

So Sony is lazy or what is the point here? ;)

    • sd

Yeah but the PS3 annoyed the hell out of me with all the updates. Version 4 maybe but you get 50 updates per version.

  • Link Slayer

Knowing our luck It will come out the same day as Wind Waker and we will have to wait a few extra hours to play it lol

  • https://soundcloud.com/rauschenmaschine Kristian Kouvo

Give us folders. Give us changeable backgrounds and sounds for eg Nintendo shop etc. Give us possibility to delete messages. Give us games Wii U deserves! Thanks. :)

    • https://soundcloud.com/rauschenmaschine Kristian Kouvo

And for the hardware side: give us the HIGH CAPACITY battery.

  • sd

I downloaded the update today. Then I realised I still dont have anything to play for another 2 weeks so I turned it off again.

  • Tom Hoskins

I’m really starting to lose patience with Nintendo, this console has been delay after delay after delay…

They are supposed to be the professionals!

  • FungalSpawn

This piece of crap update already crashed the system.

  • MetroidZero

Wait…did the Wii U Menu music change? Now I think I hear somewhat of snare drum or something. Idk.
