Chicago’s L Train got a big Luigi makeover

jRRcYaDh

To celebrate the Year of Luigi, Chicago’s L train got a bit of a green makeover. You can check out some of the shots of the train below. It seems Nintendo is going all out with unique marketing schemes to get people to pay attention to Nintendo and the Wii U. Hopefully we’ll see some catchy commercials on airing on TV during the holiday season.

Freaking awesome. Makes me wanna take the train haha.

  • Rugmouse

I sure hope the L-train’s brakes are better than Luigi’s in New Luigi U =/

  • THCaleb

Nintendo has really stepped up to the plate when it comes to marketing.

          You’re lucky

          • Deadpool U

Well my head was destroyed by Hulk once it grew back but it still hurt.
            That’s not exactly lucky.

  • Mochlum

They also have demo stations to play the game at certain stops, so that may interest some people. And the Wii U sales will eventually pick up with Mario World, Mario Kart, and Smash Bros. And they already have more ads popping up nationwide with Pikmin 3, and all those Wii U experience areas.

And also, have you seen some of Sony’s ads? I’d hardly call some of them effective:

    (shudder)

    • Baum 「ツリー」

Wow…who did they think would buy something with that Kind of an ad?!

    • Truthteller

OK, demo stations may help, and I guess they want to try and get word of mouth on the Wii U, but Luigi is not gonna do it. Luigi nor Mario excites the mind, but the site of a PS4 or a new GTA game does!

      • Jon

I never got excited for a GTA V, I just looked at it and though “oh, another GTA V game” but then again, GTA V never appealed to me which is probably the same how Mario doesn’t appeal to you. PS4, it intrigued probably about as much as the Wii U did, then i saw that online was not free and was less intrigued.

        • Mochlum

Yeah, I don’t care about GTA V at all. And Mario not exciting the mind? NSMBU didn’t sell that well, but NSMB2 sold a ton.

        • Truthteller

What is the PS4’s online pricing? If it is anything more than MS’s, then that is too much more than it’s worth! Now, it is better to HAVE online and to pay a nominal fee per year, then to not have it at all, or to have some of it. At least with MS, you can count on every game being online.

          • Marcus Navarro

Approx. $46/yr, as opposed to MS’s $60/yr. Could be more, could be less. Sony NEEDS to raise the price, because SCE is struggling hard. It’s quite the feat if you can incur as much debt as Nintendo’s net worth and have a gaming branch that’s part of a corporation and receive financial backing become smaller than Nintendo…despite popularity.

          • Jon

PS4 $50 per year and I believe Xboxlive is $60 or something, but the fact is you are still paying more for the online service just to play a game with your friends (non local). I would rather a free online service instead of paying more for your system which you already paid a lot for.

          • Marcus Navarro

The sad part is that MS actually needs Xbox LIVE to make a profit this gen and SCE needs to charge for PSN to even stay afloat. Nintendo isn’t losing money right now, so FREE ONLINE FTW!

          • Jon

I know, that’s what I like a lot :) Free Online which I can do stuff with my friends and Nintendo isn’t in the red from their system and doesn’t need to charge :P Others need to charge because they need to sell their console for less to compete and then charge for online to hide the more expensive cost over time.

          • Truthteller

Nintendo claimed to be in the red for their system. I personally don’t care who’s in the red as long as I get what I want! I am cheap, but even I don’t mind $50 a year – as long as it NEVER rises!

          • Truthteller

But every game is NOT online – that is the problem. At least when you pay (the cost of ONE game per year – come on, you act like it’s a car note), you can demand service! When it’s free, you have to hope for service and you have to take what they give you.

          • Jon

yeah, the cost of one game per year…meaning that in a consoles normal life span (lets say 6 years) you are looking at an extra $300 in the time you had the console (if you add another 2 years, $400, the cost of your console). I’d rather spend that extra $50 on another game per year than just throw it and have it magically disappear just to play with my friends.

          • Truthteller

If you want to look at it like that, then you can look at it like this. Nintendo’s systems seem to last around 3-5 years at best, while the other two have proven that ten years is very doable. So we can take you $400, then add another $600 for a new Nintendo console, games and accessories. Which is the better deal now? I actually felt good about keeping the 360 this long instead of buying then getting rid of it. If it were not for GTA V, I would have sold my 360. Instead, I will keep it for another year or until my Live account runs out, which is in about 8 months.

          • Marcus Navarro

Idk about you, but I didn’t keep my X360 or PS3 for long after I built my PC and hacked my PSP, respectively. It just seemed like the X360’s library was mostly multiplats. The Wii was shit, but it had more than a few games that were enjoyable. It did become a dust collector for me though. Not the Wii U. It’s seen more than a little action with MH3U, Sonic Racing, and Lego City

          • Truthteller

Not to get you upset, but you have to be BSing. I always had a powerful PC with $300 video card (I don’t believe in going all-out on the video card, but everything else), but the 360 was worth keeping and still is. The Wii was and is shit and it had games that were forgettable. The Wii U has not much more than the Wii and is worth getting rid of to any sucker who will take it off your hands.

          • Marcus Navarro

I’m being quite candid, actually. No BS. I didn’t like the X360. I know it’s hard to believe, but people have different tastes than you. WAYY different tastes. The Wii has forgettable games, but so does the X360(with its amalgamation of shovelware “games”) and PS3(who the hell wants to play the PSN Minis?). You’d have to be the blindest kind of person to think that it doesn’t have some good games. Again, the Wii is still shit. That I can agree with.
The Wii U is great. Idk about you, but I’m enjoying it. I have more IRL friends to play with on it now that they got one, it has quite the library right now that will only get bigger and it’s just a blast overall. I was one skeptical little hamster, but I took a chance and I feel like I got my money’s worth.
You don’t have to relate though. I don’t give a fuck.

          • Truthteller

Well, $50 is what Live costs. If you search, you can get a Live sub for less than $40. I’d rather pay $50 a year (no more!) to get reliable online, than to get some free online that is not always online. As they say, you get what you pay for. When you don’t pay, you usually end up with nothing.

        • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

GTA games’re cool, but for me (only for me) i get tired of them in a day or tow.

          • Jon

That was GTA IV for me pretty much, I played it for about a 3 or 4 days and never touched it.

      • Adrian

You do understand….that different people have different tastes, right?

      • Marcus Navarro

You would put an ad for GTA V, a game where you go around and shoot
people, in Chicago, the #1 city in USA where the most people get shot.
Yeah. Well thought out, son. Here, have a cookie!

        • Truthteller

…And you think that same city is ready for a Luigi game?

          • Marcus Navarro

It’s non-violent, affordable(for the people who have a 3DS), and simple fun! At least in comparison to GTA V, where you run around and kill everything in a city where people run around and kill everything

          • Truthteller

Survey (sales) say, that people would prefer to run around and ‘kill everything’ instead of playing an old time baby game. Besides, you don’t ‘run around and kill everything,’ you do what you want to do. How come you guys never put Saint’s Row down or Battlefield? I know why, because they are not as popular and have not eclipsed Nintendo.

          • Marcus Navarro

            Ugh…YOU ARE A FUCKING ASSHOLE!
I didn’t put down GTA V! I merely stated that advertising it on the train would be innapropriate in a city that is #1 in gun murders in the USA! You have as much of a grip on the concept of society as Bloomberg!
I don’t put down Saints Row because I like those games(not the 1st). SR3rd gets the comic level juuuuust right.
And fuck Battlefield and EA. That is all.
Why you insist on lumping together everyone who disagrees with you is beyond me. You seem so intelligent but you seem so stupid!

          • Truthteller

You just proved me right you know.

          • Marcus Navarro

            Only you’d think that…ONLY you.

You REALLY want me to post my “back catalog” of games I own/have owned and my playtimes, don’t you?
GTA’s one of my favorite franchises, with San Andreas being my favorite of the GTA series, and that is irrelevent to what Nintendo has available for its consoles.
I know it’s hard to believe, but people aren’t data or surveys and people are different. My point of you being like Bloomberg has been solidified.

  • Adrian

That’s actually great advertising. I don’t even understand why you wouldn’t think so. Getting your product out in front of random people is fantastic. Especially the beautiful artwork here. It will not only cause impulse desire, but it will also raise awareness and start a conversation circulating.

    • Truthteller

Random people huh? That is not how you advertise. What if only old people ride that train? Any teens who ride that train more than likely won’t be interested in Nintendo, unless they have to ride the train with their parents.

      • Jon

you cannot just go with “what if” because the “what if” applies to everything of every form of advertising.

      • Adrian

Well it isn’t like this is their only form of advertising. And like Jon said, your “What if’s” are pointless. Without pretending I know all the ins and outs of advertising (which I probably know much more than you, given I worked for an ad firm), I’ll just say that for me personally, this is one of the most powerful advertisements I have seen for Nintendo. It actually would have the power to wow me, lift my mood, make me smile, and get me talking about the game with others. That’s good advertising.

        • Truthteller

The key word for your knowledge is that you ‘worked’ for an ad firm! Advertising in one city is not doing it. Putting it on Amtrak trains would have been better, but the ad guys at Nintendo clearly are scrambling trying to figure out their place with little money down.

          • Jon

just because they did a train in one city does not mean they are not advertising or only advertising in just one city. Look what they did in various cities across the US and Canada during E3 and comicon, with Pikmin 3. Look at hollywood. They are doing stuff like that to advertise. Maybe they did that is Chicago for something a little different.

          • Adrian

Yeah, worked, as in I have perspective on the actual process of advertising. I have a much better job now :).

          • Truthteller

Unless that job is leading ad campaigns, then I don’t want to hear it. People who make burgers think that they are burger executives.

          • Adrian

Haha, a person in a burger restaurant would probably know more about burgers than you still, regardless of their position :). If you have ever worked in a large organization you would know there is alot of cross training and team work in accomplishing campaigns. You learn alot about the process, goals, and the products you produce. Also (successful) ad campaigns aren’t exactly led by a single person, it’s a huge collaborative effort across multiple departments, it’s not like what you see in the movies. You appear to be trying to cause trouble instead of actually having a conversation though, do you realize that?

          • Marcus Navarro

            THANK YOU!!!!

          • Adrian

Also, just as a sidenote, you may not be aware, but in advertisement there is alot of analysis involved. Different markets and demographics are tested in different ways, you record the results of these tests to determine what to do next. For example, if advertisement X at location Y preceded a jump in sales or had a high response rate at location Y, then that advertisement X might be tested in other similar markets. You can’t just do a stale non-dynamic nationwide campaign if you want to have the best results.

  • Clel

You just made Ashley so happy. So….guess what you get Pikmin 3!!!!! yay!!!!!

      EDIT: Nvm

  • Clel

It’s okay, I can eat you if you want me to.

    • Tim van Broekhoven

      Nonono! I wanna eat him! … I’m hungry…

    • Rogelio

Yea and keep him in your egg until he learns his lesson

  • Non_Specific_Action_Figure

Coooool, okay, now, here is a vote, vote down for Mario, vote up for Luigi! (Cuz mario is red, and voting down is red, luigi is green, voting up is green)

    • Tim van Broekhoven

Upvotes are blue? …Well, at least on my gamepad…

      • Clel

I’m colorblind but I can clearly see that they’re blue (and I’m not on my gamepad)

        • Tim van Broekhoven

          Yeah I see I’m not the only one… O:-)

  • Non_Specific_Action_Figure

This is an ineffective ad campaign. OPINION GTA V is more effective for this type of campaign. OPINION Nintendo is so cheap OPINION Nintendo is played out. OPINION, etc, etc, etc

  • RockieOllie

Luigi’s new final smash. the train runs through the level.

    • http://waluigi.com/ Waluigi

      I hate this train

  • Jon

you based it off facts that were of sales before the advertising…. that isn’t facts showing that this ad didn’t do anything.

    • Truthteller

How can I base it off facts for sale AFTER this ad campaign? Besides, it is in Chicago only, not nationwide, so I doubt if this get’s anyone out to buy a Wii U to the point where it will affect sales.

      • Mochlum

But it may AWARE them of the Wii U. Kids will want something cool from Santa, so parents run out and buy a Wii U with Mario and Donkey Kong and Pokemon and Wii Party and stuff. (as long as Nintendo distinguishes it is a new console at the demo stations)

  • Deadpool U

Guys don’t feed trolls just flag and ignore.

  • Møhåmmęd Jårmøn

The Nintendo Marketing storm has begun. You were warned lol :)

  • Marcus Navarro

    Keyword: ended.
Your opinion is not based off of said facts. It’s just an opinion. You’re the kind of cynical asshole that would be like, “This ad campaign is ineffective” in a place where people are saying, “The train ads look so cool!” Brighten up a little, sunshine.

    • Jon

Don’t call him sunshine, he doesn’t like people calling him names. lol

      • Marcus Navarro

        ROFL!

  • Marcus Navarro

Not everyone and anyone gets called a troll. It’s just you among others. And you’re one person. And you take the piss by the gallon.
It’s a goddamn train ad! A good looking one at that, so why can’t you leave it alone.
I bet if someone asked you what you thought about how it looks, you’d say something like, “Oh it sucks. The perspective lines don’t match what it’s portraying and etc.” Asshole.

    • Truthteller

I never commented on the looks have I? It looks good, I only commented on it’s effectiveness.

      • Marcus Navarro

And its effectiveness is is irrelevent here. At least you brightened up!

  • Jon

here he goes with the snapping and the name calling again. But don’t worry guys, he says he never calls people names ;)

  • CaesarGood

is that advertisement or taking over, damn…Probably would transform into a Mario character sitting among all of that…

  • Ford Crews

Yeah Nintendo, advertise in the murder capital of North America.

    • Marcus Navarro

Maybe the gangsters would be too busy playing Nintendo and too happy from it to kill.

      • Clel

        LOL

  • thedeciderU

this is very cool and unique, but will it reach the maximum amount of people? no. i hope they push a lot more in the upcoming weeks/months. at least i’ve started seeing some ads online.

  • palomino blue

This is so awesome. But it still doesn’t really do anything to help reinforce the Wii U as a separate console. everyone knows Luigi. It feels more like homage than an ad.

  • DragonSilths

L Train in Chicago…1st why is it called L? 2nd wonder if this Luigi Train will be in the Wii U version of Watch Dogs?

    • felony211662

This will definitely help promote the Wii u in chi town.. Watch dogs looks kill ;)

    • Thomas Vienna

The L stands for Luigi – err the Loop, because all of the tracks come to a big loop in the center of downtown.

  • Deadpool U

No I don’t call just anyone a troll just you and that springer85 guy all you do is spew negative comments about Nintendo and say any good news for Nintendo is propaganda.
Or maybe you’ll simply mock Nintendo fans by saying if you like Nintendo you’re stupid and retarded.

  • bakedapplepie

    This is great advertisement.

  • Marcus Navarro

He also stated how you say good news is propaganda. See both sides of the coin yet?
Negativity=/=realism. Period. You’re on here religiously constantly ranting about how much Nintendo sucks, how much the Wii U fails, how much better the competitors are, and how much bullshit the fanboys spew. Again, negativity=/=realism.
You would be tolerated if you were actually being true to what is happening. No one would pin you as a troll. You’d actually be LIKED! However, this is where you fall flat on your face. You share your (negative) opinion based on the system’s rocky start without acknowledging the rocky starts of almost every system in existence, advertise it as the truth, and coax the fans/fanboys into thinking the same way(failing at it, of course).
    Negativity=/=realism.

    • Truthteller

Propaganda writers acknowledge the Wii U’s POOR start, then try to attach it and dilute the bad news with good news from other systems, under totally different circumstances. You people call poor sales a ‘rocky start,’ I call it POOR sales and a flop. It means the same thing, only one of us wants to fudge the appearance of the words. I don’t get paid to do that, so I don’t.

      • Marcus Navarro

        Flop=/=rocky start
Flop= complete and udder failure. The product has 0% chance of bouncing back, competing or recovering due to quality or circumstances. Examples: Virtual Boy and Dreamcast, respectively

Rocky Start=Slow sales of a product with potential to gain more sales and compete in its market. The product is selling, but not well. Some products have tougher times getting off the ground due to pricing/circumstances or even being profitable. Examples: PS3, Xbox360, PSVita, 3DS, damn near every console in existence

This is the BIGGEST reason people hate you: you miscommunicate your points and show no use of conveyance or comprehension of others’ points whatsoever. Never have I seen you actually take into account that maybe people see things differently. Never have I seen you convey a point to where they can see what you’re talking about. They take things the wrong way.

Then again, you’re usually just being a cynical asshat .

i have to credit the fact that you’re not too agreeable, but you have to step out of your shell and see what others see. That way, you can PROPERLY call people out on their bullshit. Like me! ;D

      • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

        yes, some one paid you

  • Deadpool U

    You obviously didn’t pay attention.
Anytime there’s good news for Nintendo you like to brand it as propaganda and degrade it with negative comments towards Nintendo and it’s fans.
Did I really need to dumb it so you could understand?

    • Marcus Navarro

I did it for ya! ;D

    • Truthteller

You don’t see me going around calling everything pro-Nintendo propaganda. I only call it as I see it. When I read certain comments, that are positive and sound like some guy in an office made it up, I know it is BS. When an article says Wii U sales are not good, then someone writes ‘sales WILL pick up’ or it’s the same script about the 360/PS3 sales at first, or the 3Ds. That is propaganda.

      • Deadpool U

So it’s propaganda when people say they want Wii U sales to pick up?
Or when people are acknowledging the fact that what is happening with Wii U happened with successful consoles that had horrible launches?
That’s not propaganda that’s people knowing history will repeat itself.

        • Truthteller

It’s propaganda because this is no repeat and you don’t know what will happen. You just want to get away from what was and IS happening – no one is buying the Wii U.

          • Adrian

It’s not propaganda because you obviously do not know the definition of propaganda.

          • Deadpool U

Propaganda: information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.
Thus people saying Wii U sales will pickup is not propaganda and they will pickup it’s happened before and it’ll happen again.

  • Derk

People don’t like your comments because it seems like you are intentionally trying to stir the pot and cause these Nintendo fans to retaliate against you. That is what you are doing, right?

I agree with you partially that If Nintendo were smart, then they would have been advertising at Six flags or something. Nintendo is advertising to a group of people that most likely don’t even own cars.

Most people riding the bus can’t afford a car of their own and Nintendo wants to advertise a $350 Wii U console to those same people? They might as well advertise it to the Amish community as well (that was a joke). This campaign would be much more effective in a place like japan or china where public transportation is more popular but you can’t deny that train is pretty cool looking.

    • Deadpool U

That’s a stereotype people who ride the bus aren’t poor I ride the bus and I have a Wii U and buy a bunch of new games every week.

      • Derk

Are you poor? Physiological needs like shelter and food come first. I am not your father; however, I think it would have been in your best interest to put that $350 down on a car payment. You must be pretty young.

        • Adrian

Derk, poor people don’t ride the bus, smart people do. Commuting to work and paying for parking is a stupid money wasting move. At both my jobs, most of my coworkers, all of which got payed $70K – $100K+, took the bus or carpooled to work. Just because you are wealthy doesn’t mean you should be stupid with your money. I’ve rode the bus to work every single day for 4 years now.

P.S., in case it isn’t obvious, myself, and my coworkers all have our own car(s).

And just because math is fun, here is a little lesson. Right now my work gives me a bus pass and charges me $5 a month for unlimited bus travel. So my commuting expense is $60/year. If I drove to work, I would spend about $5/day on gas, $20 on parking, and have the additional wear and tear on my vehicle. So let’s do some math, should I spend $60 a year to go to and from work? Or should I spend ($25x5x~50)= $6,250? Hmm toughie. My last job gave a discount at one of the garages in downtown, but even would still cost you $200/month + gas costs.

Exactly. And with that $6,190 you can buy extra Nintendo games! Hooraay

          • Derk

Let’s face reality here… MOST of the people that ride the bus are usually unable to drop $400 on a Wii U…… Even you seem to be pretty concerned with money (your budget has gas down to the penny). Generally speaking a bus isn’t the greatest place to advertise a product like Wii U.. You may be one of the very few exceptions.

Also, I would assume that you actually do own a car unlike most of the people on the bus.

i use the subway and i’m from Dominican Republic (third world) and i have a wii u, i pay my netflix, buy starcraft 2, the expansion, my lenovo laptop (1000 US), etc.

Nah Derk, it’s called commuting to work. Especially to a big city. I’m not “concerned” with my budget, I’m just aware of all the money I have, and where it’s going. If I wasn’t I couldn’t retire early like I plan :).

Not everyone needs a car some people like me are in perfect walking distance to where they need to go or use the bus if a few specific places are out of walking distance and that doesn’t incorporate much need to get a car.

Most people riding the bus can’t afford a car?????????
      or the subway?

Does it say Wii U on the train? Seriously Nintendo advertise the system and it’s games. Now of course us commenting here know that Super Luigi U is Wii U exclusive, but do any of the people on that train know? I love you guys, but you leave out the simplest things.

  • Theiz Zzee

Oh I am green with envy.
