Pokemon X & Y will require 14,000 blocks of memory

Pokemon X & Y digital file with take up 14,000 blocks of memory, equating to about 1.7GB.

original

Over the past few months we’ve seen game sizes for digital downloads go up tremendously, which is bad news for those who are still rocking those 2GB or 4GB cards that ship with the Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL. Thankfully Nintendo opted to go with cheap SD cards as memory instead of the Sony proprietary method. If you’re like me and you download most all of your 3DS games, you’ve got a 32GB SD card popped in there.

Pokemon X & Y will be taking up 14,000 of your memory blocks, which equates to about 1.7GB of actual space. You can also check out the Japanese packaging for Pokemon X & Y above. Each of these bundles has the game pre-installed and we expect similar bundles to launch in Europe and the United States once the game is available.

So, will you be upgrading your SD card?

I hope it is worth it. This is alot of memory ( nearly 75%) available on the 3ds,. I hope that they add a few extra pokemon as dlc, imagine having a fourth form version of charmander. However the data will be used to power the new battle engine which has recently been announced as being able to play pokemon in real time rather than turn based. How this plays out…. I guess we will find out when we buy the game.

    • Lunatic

      1) 1.7GB is not “nearly 75%” of 2GB, it IS 85% of 2GB. As in, MORE than 75%. This also barely matters, because 3DS XLs come with 4GB SD cards, and you can buy 8GB SD cards for under $10 now. It’s dirt cheap to expand this.
      2) If you don’t like the game taking up so much space, buy a physical copy.
      3) They will not have Pokemon as DLC. They will not have 4th evolutions for Pokemon. Jesus, do you have any idea how these games actually work? Have you ever played a Pokemon game?
      4) “The data” isn’t being used to power a “new battle engine”. There was and will not be a “real time” mode released. You pulled that information out of your ass. The new game is the first in the handheld line to render Pokemon in 3D (non-sprite-based), but they’ve already done that a couple dozen times in other Pokemon games (Stadium, Colosseum, Snap, etc) without using too much data.

You made up pretty much everything in your post. Make sure you know what you’re talking about before you spread misinformation.

      • Milotic4Ever

That awkward moment when you realize that event Pokemon are more or less DLC. 0_o

        • Lunatic

DLC is typically not IN the game already. It’s usually additional data, not just an in-game item. You could technically get any event Pokemon through GTS hacking or something like a GameShark. DLC is extra. For example, in Borderlands 2, you need to purchase and download the two add-on characters, and everybody else needs to download a compatibility pack to play with people using them.

  • Møhåmmęd Jårmøn

No? Ill just buy the hard copy

  • Saleh Sbeiti

I only buy physical copies of games.

  • sdmac200600

Nintendo better bring that 3DS over to america…

    • Nookling

      I want a Zelda 3DS XL

    • Ducked

I just bought my Pikachu 3DS XL 5 months ago. Although I’d still be tempted to buy this

    • Doctors Tardis

      They won’t

  • Kriffix

Though I’ve downloaded Phoenix Wright 5 and Digimon World Re:digitize decode, Pokémon is very much something I would like to purchase physically. I’ll be back in Japan for a year from September so I’ll be lining up at the old PokéCen to pick up a copy on release, can’t wait.

  • LopsidedPasta

I think this may be because you can revisit other regions in the game. Anyone else ready for Hoenn round 2?

    • Nookling

Hoenn is still my favorite Gen!

    • MujuraNoKamen

Good thinking, I really hope they do a Hoenn remake :)

    • The Clockwork Being

Hoenn one of the most underrated regions

  • Razo_E

How do you transfer games? Do you copy the files from your SD to a computer then back to the SD? I want to start downloading more games on my 3DS, as used cartridges are nearly the same price as new.

    • NinjaFart

“Do you copy the files from your SD to a computer then back to the SD? ” Yep that’s right. I’ve done it before and it’s pretty easy.

  • Hairee Pothead

I download Retro Games but not retail which are often the size of a GameCube Mini-DVD.

  • AAAkabob

    Yep, 32 GB ftw

  • Cyrus

I really like the digital versions for several reasons. One is the convenience to have games available at fingertip instead of switching the cartridge when you want to play another game. Another is that -even if very unlikely- a cartridge could break. And last but not least, it’s more environment-friendly, no shipping, no material, no production, just a few mWh of downloading.

So for me it depends on the pricing, often there are some discounts at a retailer, but in eshop you almost always pay fullprice. I’m willing to pay a few bucks more for the eshop version for said reasons, but not more than lets say 5€.

    • LordiMcKill

And you’ve basically got it forever.

      • Cyrus

yes, of course that may be a negative point if you plan to sell the game later on. But i usually want to keep my games, so for me that is fine.

  • MujuraNoKamen

What? I thought one of the bundles had a Gold XL and the other Blue, not both of the being the same – not that I was going to get one anyway but I’m sure I saw a gold Pokemon XL. Maybe that was for Europe/NA and the Japanese bundles are both the same. Any way these games are looking better and better the more I see of them, day 1 buy definitely :D

    • Kriffix

Gold was a Pokémon Center exclusive. We have yet to see box art. The ones you see above are the two different versions of the Blue one :)

      • MujuraNoKamen

        Oh right. thanks :)

  • Jack Cottle

Hey i saw this somewhere else but look…
    cHespin
    frOaike
    fENNikin
    It spells Hoenn!!!!!!

    • LopsidedPasta

      Half-Life 3 confirmed!!!

  • Madmagican

Shit, that’s almost as big as SMT4
…I’m gonna need a bigger SD card; good thing they’re pretty cheap

  • Deadpool U

I’d like to believe that the file size is because there a 2 save files but sadly we all know that’s impossible.

    • Lunatic

Well you could always back up your SD card on the computer for a second save file. Or buy both X and Y.

  • Jack5221

Can anyone confirm or deny if that 3DS model is coming to the states? I do not yet own a 3DS, been waiting for Pokemon X & Y to get one, specifically for the possible bundles. Great to see to the bundles, but are they coming to the states?

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

I won’t be upgrading to a bigger SDCard, atleast not for Digital downloads, I almost always get physical copies :) So won’t be a problem for me.

  • Logan Waltz

i’ve been holding off buying a new ds just for a special edition. hopefully they are different colors for each edition.

  • Hudson

Please, Gold and Silver were the best because you could travel to two regions. Forget Hoenn. Just because you grew up with it , doesn’t make it better, sweet cakes.

    • greengecko007

I do agree that Gold and Silver (and their remakes) are the best. But I think Hoenn is a close second. All opinionated of course.

When Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire came out I was already well into the Pokemon series. As somebody who has played all the main series games, I can honestly say that in my opinion, the Hoenn region has the best design in the series. It’s not overly linear (Pokemon Black and White) and the dynamic weather effects that changed depending on the days were cutting edge for a GBA game at the time. The massive ocean land mass is fun to travel, and being able to dive into underwater trenches to hunt for Pokemon was genius.

  • Adam Fox

are they saying that BOTH games will be 1.7GB? or EACH game will be 1.7GB???

    • Linskarmo

      That’s a good question. I wonder now. :-/

  • Gabrielsen

The game better come with a extra SD card :)

  • Linskarmo

So Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are different games, aren’t they? Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but what makes companion Pokemon games different?

    • Doctors Tardis

There will be some pokemon in one that isn’t in the other, and a few slight differences.

  • Jesus

Maybe we will be able to travel to Kanto again keep in mind the new mewtwo form.

  • David Blanco

I got the $30 dollar credit for registering Shin Megami Tensei IV and Fire Emblem. Saving it for pokemon Y. If not for that free credit I would by physical only.
