New report says Sega is interested in bidding for Atlus

Atlus-Sega-DD

The saga of Atlus and its bankrupt parent company is one we’ve covered well here on Wii U Daily and each time we do, many of you speculate that Nintendo should buy the niche publisher. A new report from Bloomberg Japan suggests that Sega might be interested in placing a bid on the company. According to anonymous sources close to the issue, the opening bid for the company is 20 billion yen, which is just over $200 million.

Would you like to see Sega secure Atlus properties, or would you rather they go to Nintendo? Let us know in the comments.

Sonic x Shin Megami… I’m okay with this. Let’s make sonic badass again guys!

  • JBeauregard

This isn’t a new report. It has been reported a couple times in the past few weeks.

  • Mariokartfann

    Nintendo for sure

  • lozman1122

Eh… In my opinion, they’d be better off with Nintendo. Nintendo seeks more software than sega (I believe) and so Altus would probably sell more if Nintendo purchased them. I believe they’d be better from a business perspective.

  • Zombie Boy

I’d rather Nintendo buy them, as we’d be guaranteed exclusives, but Sega buying them wouldn’t be too bad either as they have a good relationship with Nintendo, so at least we’d see some games come out of the deal. As long as Atlus don’t go to someone like EA then I’m happy.

    • SonicLucario

      I agree 110% with you

      • Sonic

        9001%

    • The Clockwork Being

All I mostly want is SMT x FE ensured and to keep those 3DS exclusive games from Atlus like Etrian Odessey and Shin Megami Tensei(and everything with this brand name like Devil Survivors) so thats why I want Nintendo to buy them the most.

      • Zombie Boy

I’m sure if Sega bought Atlus then we’d still get them. Look at the exclusives Sega are giving us right now.

        • kevin nun—-

but they might be tempted to make those titles for other consoles and then there will be less reason to buy a 3DS or Wii U.

          • Zombie Boy

I agree, but it’s still better than not getting the games at all. And I think Sega might still keep THOSE titles exclusive, as they have with their latest Sonic games.

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

EA wouldn’t buy atlas. They dont know what to do with it

      • Zombie Boy

They don’t know what to do with a lot of their devs, but they still buy them! Part of me is worried that EA (or Microsoft) would try just so that Nintendo won’t get the games! I guess it depends how butthurt they still are.

        Microsoft bought RARE didnt they?

        • jay

          …and destroyed them :'(

          • WolfgangAmadeusMozart
          • 00EpicGamer00

I think Microsoft only bought RARE so Nintendo couldn’t get the games…..Why do you think any RARE game with Microsoft is terrible? Something tells me that that Microsoft doesn’t at all care about RARE’s franchises, and just bought it so they can gloat about it….not a very smart business decision o.0
Well…..Microsoft thought they owned Donkey Kong when they purchased RARE. So…..If Microsoft’s intention behind purchasing RARE was just to basically gloat about it….Then, that doesn’t really surprise me :P

          • Magnus Eriksson

Bad and unethical business praxis. Buying companies just to block others. Thats why I dislike MS the most. Sure, Nintendo has its greedy stuff too, but not comparable to MS.

          • InsaneZucchini

Well, I thought Kameo was great, that was a Rare game wasn’t it? But that’s the only one I can think of worth mentioning. And that was a 360 launch titles so, years since anything worthwhile.

          • 00EpicGamer00

Well, uhh….I wouldn’t know, sorry. I don’t have a 360….Or any other console besides Nintendo consoles. Never have, and not sure if I ever will. Though, a PS3 has recently peeked my interest :/
….Courtesy of Red Dead Redemption and Kingdom Hearts. If the PS3 can drop down to AT LEAST $250, then I’m sold!

          • Magnus Eriksson

            yup

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

          Poor RARE :(

          • Magnus Eriksson

            Yup

    • Magnus Eriksson

Hmmm… sometimes I really miss SEGA as a hardware company. Before Sony and especially Microsoft came to the field. Back then everything was about games, now its only about greed.

      • Zombie Boy

I agree. Sega vs Nintendo was a much more friendly rivalry. Nowadays, everything seems much more bloodthirsty.

        • Tonkka

I thought it was more blood thirsty back in the day. Did you forget “Nintendon’t” and “Get it or Get out”? Nowadays game companies are all “No no no, we all love each other” even though they are still kicking each others legs under the dining table.

          • Zombie Boy

It’s more the fans that have taken things too far, with trolling and such. But the things you mentioned were out-in-the-open pokes between the two companies at each other. Companies like Microsoft, and more recently EA, are much more underhanded and money-hungry, not caring about anyone (including their fans) and just chasing the almighty dollar.

          • Mark

The internet’s made this current console war a lot more bloody than before my friend; instead of “Nintendon’t,” it’s more like “buy this console or kill yourself.”

        • bizzy gie

          “bloodthirsty”?

Get that COD language out of here!

          :D

          • Zombie Boy

I’m not the one that just brought COD into this conversation :P

      • jay

Those 2 companies were monster hardware competitors. Now it’s “Wait to see what Nintendo does, then copy”

        • Magnus Eriksson

They could be tough against each others too. Remember SEGAs commercial in the 16-bit era? As we fan-kids on each side could be too. Nintendo-kids fighting with SEGA-kids in the schoolyard. Fist fights to death… or at least to the other one started to cry. :D

          • Mark

Nintendo Fan: Super Nintendo is better than Sega Genesis you idiot!
Sega Fan: Oh yeah, we have Blast Processing!!!!!!!!!!!
Nintendo Fan: (Silence, because he can’t figure out how to counter that)

This was the type of argument you heard back in the 1990s; simply classic

          • Moreck

Especially when “blast processing” wasn’t even a real thing; it was just a marketing gimmick. Sega ran some pretty nasty anti-Nintendo ads back in the day, while N stayed classy.

          • Magnus Eriksson

not entirely true. SEGA had a few mHZ stronger processor than SNES and used it for all it was worth. Not that it mattered really…

      • thedeciderU

sega was a great hardware company imo. i miss them too.

    • Rukiafan Rukiachan

      Capcom = Sega = SQEX = Konami

These companies will destroy Atlus and reduce them to Social Mobile nonsense.

After the BOF 6 fiasco I’d rather Atlus be owned by a hardware maker or a company that still care for making quality games ( Nintendo for sure)

      • Zombie Boy

I actually like all of the companies you mentioned, and to some degree, they’ve all supported the Wii U. But I guess that comes down to personal taste and opinion.

    • Mr. J

I want nintendo to buy Altus instead

  • Archiq09

SEGA is friend with nintendo they will have not big changing just more games for nintendo.
The big changing will be SEGA to Atlus.

  • Clel

Well if that’s true, then the saga of Atlus will become the SEGA of Atlus! (See what I did there?)

  • SonicLucario

    Well this escalated pretty quickly

  • sdmac200600

I would much rather Nintendo to by them but Sega is still a great company. As long as they don’t get bought by greedy 3rd party devs that put out half assed games (EA!!!)

  • lonewolf88

of course nintendo. if sega buys it we might miss out of what could be the fire emblem x shin cross over!

  • Xero Azure

Nintendo so i can play Persona 4 on Wii u

  • daeglyth

At least it looks like Atlus will definitely have a home. Not much sense in any other speculation with what little information we have at this point.

  • AlThor

Nintendo for purely personal reasons…another publisher in “the house” certainly can’t hurt!

  • https://soundcloud.com/rauschenmaschine Kristian Kouvo

    Sounds good to me.

  • Scott Duperree

I am fine with Sega getting the company. It would be nice if they aimed some Persona games toward the Wii U.

  • mar laguna

Well i like it with Nintendo

  • crocodileman94

I don’t care who obtains it, as long as SMTxFE doesn’t get cancelled.

    • memk

If SEGA gets it, nintendo won’t let them publish it.

  • John Andalora

    I have this to say.

  • danger

Was it not Sega that also had some financial issues as well not to long ago? It was the reason they cancelled a lot of their games in development, Bayonetta 2 comes to mind.

  • Baum 「ツリー」

I think we all can agree, that both options would be alright, but that Nintendo needs ATLUS more atm…SEGA and Nintendo worked quite closely in the past so we WILL get ATLUS’ games, if they get it.
BUT I think they should step back and let Nintendo buy them. SMT x FE WILL be a system seller if it can be finished and released, but with SEGA buying ATLUS, there’s a slight chance of them releasing it as multiplat game and thus possibly decreasing the quality and the utilization of Wii U’s full potential and less people buying the game – and more importantly – the Wii U to play it…

I’d be totally okay with all that, but no one can denie, that it would hurt Nintendo even more in their current situation (unless the impact of SSB, MK and 3D World is enormous ^^)

    • crocodileman94

      FE is a Nintendo franchise.

      • TaintedXGamer

so Fat chances of it becoming a multiplat title, Budew. Ain’t that ryt croc94? Lol

  • Mark

Sega is actually a subsidiary of Sega Sammy, a merger between Sega and Sammy (arcade/slot machine manufacturer). You know, it would be pretty cool if Sega broke away from Sammy and started a merger with Nintendo; we could see Sega consoles again, albeit with Nintendo’s help. I’ve always loved the rivalry between Sega and Nintendo, but if the two company’s become partners for life, that’ll make my day.

  • Your money

Interesting for sega to bid for Atlus. This is honestly an unexpected mix up to me. But who knows what sega would do with shin megami tensei. Just hope that sega is more to nintendo’s side.

  • bizzy gie

    $200 million?

    That’s pretty cheap.

    I’m not being sarcastic.

That’s seriously not a lot of money for the company.

    • http://www.senran-international.boards.net/ TwinTails

And with that, Nintendo can easily outbid them.

  • http://www.w-o-n.org/ GoldDreams

I’d rather them go to Nintendo. SEGA hasn’t really made a must own, must play game since 2000. I am afraid they’d just kill all those franchises like they have their own within the past decade.

  • TaintedXGamer

NINTENDO WHY Y NO BUYING ATLUS RYT NAOW?!

  • Aamir Islam

Nintendo should buy them because PS fans only care about Persona but Nintendo fans care about their other IPs.

  • Banemus

And because nintendo is way better in polish and have high standards! opposed to sega … they don’t have such a nice track record

  • Spike Ashford

Nintendo and Sega have a solid relationship, but I do hope Nintendo buys out Atlus so we can get Shin Megami Tensei on Wii U and 3DS. Nintendo needs to release more adult games and I think Atlus and their IPs would be a great way for Nintendo to start doing just that.

  • CyanideInsanity

As long as sega doesn’t pull what M$ did with rare, it shouldn’t be a problem.

  • Arthur Jarret

I’d rather have Sega buy them, so Atlus can continue to push for the best games that fit each console, instead of being limited to a single design philosophy. I also hope they’d be able to continue their awesome legacy of localizing otherwise JP-only games by other developers.

  • Forbsz

I would rather Nintendo but if atleast an alright company like sega can secure them then go for it!

  • Ricky Guzman

I think Atlus is perfect for Sega.

  • MujuraNoKamen

I’d rather Sega than Sony but my preference goes to Nintendo, look at how they’ve worked so well with Retro and Monolith. If they took Atlus on board and pulled a similar trick then how awesome would that be. Wii U would secure some great exclusives and would make it a great platform for JRPGs what with Monolith games, possibly Pokemon and Atlus’s games like SMT and Etrian Odyssey.

  • starwars360

Maybe Nintendo and Sega share together to own this Atlus since Sega partner with Nintendo for 3 new Sonic games and I am believe there might secret game from Sega for Nintendo console and handheld game in future. I dunno but we never know in future.

What I really is see both together share business for Atlus. So Nintendo publishing Atlus games for Nintendo console and handheld while Sega publishing Atlus games for multiformat consoles and of course…. Oh something missing here? Hmmmm Oh yes it is PC hahahaha. :)

  • Johny

personally, i’d be glad with either Nintendo OR sega.. doesnt really matter… but ofc, would rather see nintendo for secured exclusives/games
