Wii U basic model phased out at several retailers

wii-u-white

A few months ago we reported that it was rumored Nintendo might be giving up on the Wii U 8GB basic model. It looks like retailers stepped in before Nintendo, as GameStop, Target, and Best Buy are no longer stocking the 8GB model of the Wii U. This is huge for that specific SKU, since GameStop and Best Buy are the two biggest places to buy games in the United States.

There’s no word from Nintendo on this just yet, but expect that white 8GB Wii U to become a collector’s item shortly.

  • JA GOOZE

well thank god i got the 8gb then…

  • Zombie Boy

In all honesty, I’m not sure why Nintendo even released this package. If you have the money to buy a new system, then why not spend the extra bit of cash for the superior model (with a free game too)? That’s probably how most people look at it, and why retailers have ceased stocking it – it just wasn’t as popular as the deluxe version, which was only $50 / £50 more.

    • Clel

I got white for several reasons:
      1. I prefer the colour
      2. (Well this isn’t me, but most likely a lot of other people) Some people don’t want Nintendo Land
      3. I didn’t want to have to carry around the stand and all those other little things that came with the system (I move a lot)
      4. I prefer the box :D
EDIT: 5. 24 gigs is too small a difference for me to care.

      • RockieOllie

Even 32g is abysmal! The system should of had 80 to 100gigs at LEAST. And give customers the option to buy a black or white version of the same model.

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I have 300 gigs from an old hard drive lying around the house. Its not hard to find extra storage

That being said, I agree. the internal memory is a bit pitiful

          • RockieOllie

I feel like Nintendo really gave use the shortest end of the stick when it came to storage. I’m sure they could pumped a bit more storage space in the model for dirt cheep.

And it sucks, new Wii U owners who aren’t tech savvy and get the 8gig version immediately have half their storage eaten up by firmware updates

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

            yeah. THAT blows….

          • incoherent1

I just wish they’d just let you use an SD card to expand memory like with the original Wii. The SD slot on the U can only be used for very limited purposes, and game storage isn’t one of them… Makes no sense.

(And I don’t buy Nintendo’s claim that SD cards aren’t good for frequent read/writing — I use one very regularly in my DSLR and never have issues)

          • brian

            Storage.

        • Clel

Oh yes, I forgot to add in that 24 gigs is too small for me to care. I’ll edit that in.

      • Zombie Boy

Don’t forget that you don’t have to wipe the dust off the white model every time you pick it up lol. I play my Wii U every day, but the black gamepad is a dust magnet!

      • incoherent1

I also own the White model and agree with all of these.

First and foremost: everything on my entertainment center is white, so I’d rather get something that fits in — I was going to HAVE to get an external HD regardless, so space didn’t matter, and Nintendo Land can now be bought for super cheap (it was $10 on Amazon last week).

      • Jorge Aguirre

I prefer black over white but if I could go back in time I’d buy the white model since white doesnt show finger prints as much as the black one, I didn’t like Nintendo Land and I’m disappointed with the eshop which charges tax (which was a big deal to me because I wanted to purchase super luigi u which is $20, the amount of the card I purchased plus tax and I kept trying to purchase the remaining tax with credit card and even add a $10 fund but it didn’t work and I checked my balance and $13 were missing since that day, and I hadn’t made any other purchases that day).

        • Clel

The tax is the government’s fault, not Nintendo.

    • link2nintendo

Well when Nintendo first announced it, I thought it was genius: Release two models and make one seem FANTASTIC by making the other pretty good but adding a tons of memory and only charging $50 dollars more. I thought it was a clever ploy to push a crap ton of units on this AMAZING DEAL, which they did do in the beginning with the Deluxe set. They had no competition at the time into the 8th gen, so they had to create their own with themselves and then, beat themselves…..the plan just would have worked better if they didn’t make so many basic models in the first place.

      • Zombie Boy

I think the biggest flaw in their plan was to make the price difference only $50 / £50. The free game itself would cost that much, if sold separately, so you are effectively getting four times the memory FOR FREE.

If the basic package had been priced $75 – $100 / £75 – £100 less than the deluxe version, it would have made more sense (and more sales).

        • Grulnork

You forget that the game wasn’t very good and can be picked up for 20 euro now. The price difference is enough to buy a harddisk. Especially after the discounts.

          • Zombie Boy

Yes, but you can’t compare now and then. I’m talking launch packages, not things as they are now.

          • Grulnork

Well maybe, but I think launch is just a very small amount of time. A console’s lifespan is many years. So I think it does matter what things cost further down the line. Buying a console (or a game) on launch always makes you pay to much and is therefore a potential waste.

Talking about extra memory and a ‘free’ game is not as straight forward as you think. If you wanted to buy Nintendoland on launch then yeah you get some extra flash memory for the same price. But if you are more interested in another game then buying that game in combinaiton with the basic pack may be the better choice. As Nintendoland is a gimmicky game that is bound to cost less over time you can still pick it up later on.

The extra memory never really appealed to me. It may be useful if you do not want to connect a harddisk at all, but still want to use the virtual console, but for now the 3GB free space on the basic version is enough for me.

If you are planning to attach a harddisk to your Wii U, then the extra memory is totally irrelevant.

          • brian

            Extra storage. Not memory, people.

          • Mochlum

            I really like Nintendo Land…

        • Ducked

If the Basic version was $279 or $249, then it sell much better. They should probably make a little less basic Basic Set.

        • brian

          Storage, not memory.

    • Elem187

I believe the idea is they made the 8gb system for their casual audience and the 32gb for more of their core fanbase.

But casuals usually don’t buy consoles at launch, and usually for a price point in the 150-200 price range… so their only mistake was offering so many of these white ones so early in the life of the console.

Its actually a pretty good strategy to offer a slightly different console to each of their main demographics.

      • Zombie Boy

I see nothing wrong with offering a deluxe version and a different, cheaper package. Like I’ve said above, the main problem lay in the fact that the superior model was only $50 / £50 more expensive, and included a free game, as well as some other stuff. The price difference needed to be between $75 – $100 / £75 – £100 for it to really make sense.

    • Lethal_Doze

I think you havent hears of XBox 360 Arcade, the basic model was a huge success

    • Grulnork

Basic edition was a lot cheaper for me. And I don’t need the extra space, I’ll put a HDD on it when the good games come out and I want to get them digitally.

Imo 32GB memory is just as bad as 8GB and for the price difference you can often buy a harddisk and a game (at least in europe).

    • Shaise

Yup, I think they’ll release I white deluxe edition now, because they already have one in Japan

    • Jorge Aguirre

If Nintendo is smart that’s been their strategy all along: make a $300 package with less value then their other package priced at $350 with more value, $50 more and people would buy the black model because of that, its a psychological strategy businesses use all the time but consumers don’t know that and unfortunately neither do retailers.

    • jay

This thing should’ve never been packaged like this.
This is how it should have went down:

White Wii U 32GB with Nintendo Land

Black Wii U 32GB with ZombiU

      • Zombie Boy

I think, like others have said, they’ll repackage those unsold white Wii Us with more memory anyway, so something like this could happen.

        • brian

          Storage. Not memory, dudes.

      • YogiGRB

I agree, i went for the black ZombiU version :D (day one in amsterdam)

    • Spurtoh

I chose the white one. The storage space is tiny on both models, I figured I’d have to get a hard drive anyway, the stand and charging cradle seem kinda pointless, I wanted to buy nsmbu more than nintendoland, and all my wii stuff is white. so I’d recommend the basic set to anybody, really. You’ll need a hard drive and the “recommended” ones are all at least 1tb, which is plenty.

    • https://soundcloud.com/rauschenmaschine Kristian Kouvo

Only reason to buy basic version is if you prefer white color. Everything else outta window.

  • trevelyn412

yaaay! I bought a new system that was “phased out! ” Wow! I feel severely ripped off.

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

sell it once they’re off the market for too much money

    • Leo

You can sell it a few years from now for double the price you paid. When those things happens it becomes highly collectible.

      • Elem187

And Nintendo does have a process to allow you to transfer all your purchases to a new console… I believe you call Nintendo with both serial numbers and they will do the transfer for you… So you could possibly be able to buy a new console in a few years for dirt cheap, call Ninty to get it xfer’d and then box up the white one and ebay it for the cost of both of your console purchases, voila free games console!

    • crocodileman94

as the others said, sell it in a few years as a collector’s item.

  • lozman1122

I’m honestly not surprised. In my opinion, I believe if they bundled the 8gb sku with nintendoland, then it would’ve sold better.

    • Elem187

I think they made this SKU specifically for their Just Dance demographic…. the problem is casuals probably wont start buying the console in large numbers until the price comes down to the mass adoption rate, which I believe its about $200 usd before they casuals jump on board… of course they wont jump on board in the numbers they did in the Wii’s heyday. but Nintendo will still get a fair share of them on the Wii U.

  • Steven_Segal

LOL, i like how every hater/troll has come now to say Wii U is doomed! Just wait till all 1st party games arrive and then we can talk about it. Instead of feeding the trolls, I’m just gonna play video games.

    • crocodileman94

Screw the trolls, I play videogames!

      • Elem187

And thats what I’ll be doing in less than 24 hours (PIKMIN!!!!)

        • Luffy

          lucky you…. :(

        • jay

          Lucky F***

    • jay

Dude I’ve been following gaming news since 1989 and let me tell you the new generation that arose in 2006 will show their immaturity and call those awesome 1st party titles “Baby gaemes”, “irrelevant” and “Casual”. Claiming those sales numbers are null because of that.

  • Mitch Hall

Well, I guess they’ve just decided to quietly discontinue it… surprising no one.

  • Daniel Worthington

Ninty will prolly retrofit these 8gb models with larger harddrives and then resell them as white deluxe wii u’s…

  • CMB

I want a white wii u with 32 gb! Please release that model!

    • Smooching

Yes, this is exactly the reason why I am still not buying a Wii U. The premium version has so much more to offer, but I just don’t want to have a black one. Call me crazy, but I will not spend 300 euros for something that I will regret when the white version DOES come out. I just like to have white versions of the Nintendo devices as they are very pretty and fit into my home decor.

      • CMB

I know, my white wii accessories will not look good when I use it on a black wii u.

  • sdmac200600

Good. This model was completely a waste of time and space.

    • Elem187

Not following. It allows their customers choice… Their ‘core’ demographic arent their only customers. They do have millions of casual gamers who only will be buying the console to play the dance dance games and maybe a few eshop titles. its the perfect edition for their casual gamer demographic.

Their only mistake was making too many of the 8gb consoles… they should have held the production of the 8gb to a minimal until the price of the console can come down to mass adoption price (roughly $200 usd is when the casuals will start coming on board)

      • Fred

But the casuals will want Nintendo Land so they won’t want the basic either.

    • victor

Do you mean wii u ?

      • sdmac200600

No just the 8 gig model of the Wii U

    • jay

This model was troll candy too.

All those stupid articles and posts saying “Wii U’s are just sitting on the shelves. No one’s buying em hurr hurr”. Were all because of the Basic set. Everyone wanted the Deluxe.

  • Mark Thom

from the start it should have bin 40gb or 80gb

    • Elem187

Why? that would have raised the price of the console $20-$40.

by going with a small flash memory they keep costs down while giving the consumer more choice to provide their own storage. I think its pro-consumer more than any other platform holder that forces you take their insanely marked up proprietary drive.

      • AsterDW

Pricing doesn’t always work that way. The difference in consumer price between a 32gb flash drive and a 64gb drive is actually quite small, only a few dollars. That’s for consumers, OEM’s ordering more quantities and Nintendo probably would have noticed even less of an difference in price than an end user. I love my Wii U, but there are flaws and Nintendo could have easily doubled the amount of NAND for maybe $1.50 to $2 a console. The big jump in cost for NAND chip prices is going from 64gb to 128gb chips.

  • Thomas Vienna

I suppose that, in a way, that makes my console a “limited edition model.” ^.^
    -
I only got the 8GB because they were all out of the deluxe 32GB in the pre-orders, and there was no way I was waiting months for it. I don’t care about the lower memory, because I buy retail whenever I can, and neither 8GB nor 32GB is very much memory at all anyway. Most of the games coming out are over 8GB anyway.

    • Elem187

I got the 8gb because I knew I would fill up 32gb pretty quick, so i knew I would be adding my own ext hdd anyways. So I stuck that $50 savings into my 1.5tb Western Digital.

Plus the white looks great. I don’t get the dust problem that people with the black model seem to complain about.

      • crocodileman94

        what dust problem?

        • Luffy

more like the finger print problem.
Only problem I have with the gamepad is the finish. And because I have the black version, It’s just full of fingerprints all over and they are really evident…

      • jay

Spent the extra cash on an external HD. Damn Smart :)

  • SonicLucario

To me the basic set was kinda obsolete, yes it was cheaper then the deluxe set but only by 50$. If you spent the extra 50$ you get a lot of extra stuff and 3 times the amount of GB. So this is kinda smart for Nintendo do drop the basic set if this is true.

  • thedeciderU

over the life of this console, how much memory could the system updates possibly eat up? does anyone know?

    • Elem187

My theory is they just reserved an amount of space on every console to give themselves a buffer to grow the OS footprint over time and not step on any customers downloads.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Most of the time system updates overwrite the code that is already there like patching an OS. Updates the files but occasionally those files/code could be bigger (or smaller) and new files/code could be added

      • thedeciderU

        most helpful – thank you!

  • Jake

Too be fair the basic could have been better. Barely any games are less than 5 gb. I know ppl could afford 16 gb but look at XB1 and PS4 500gb. The basic should have tried to get a price of $250 with 32 gb and the Deluxe should have been $300 with 120 gb cutting the gamepad stand and charger stand. Also the day one update should be there with 100% all the storage. So basically instead of a customer having to buy 1 game to make a profit it would be 2 for the basic.

    • Elem187

I don’t think the basic model was made for people who wanted to buy retail games on the eshop.

Nintendo has a whole lot of customers that play boxed retail only and wont be doing any major downloads.. maybe buy some classic VC games and thats it.

Although I chose the white model because i liked the color and I have an extra harddrive lying around, and 32gb isn’t exactly a massive drive, so I knew I would be adding my own storage eventually.

      • Jake

Yeah, but some ppl like u wanted white but may not have a hard drive and some just got the white bc the deluxe was out. I am just saying it would be nice to not have more than 1 gb more storage than the 3dsxl

  • Starfoxguy

They could just sell the basic model online just in case some people can’t afford to spend an extra $50.

  • Leo

It’s inevitable. Nintendo will recall the Basic Model to use its pieces on the Deluxe production to cut costs, then they will drop the price and release a white Deluxe package with WWHD.

  • Leo

Last time i checked videogames ARE kid’s toys sold in toy stores.

  • CaesarGood

why would it become a collectors item, when it is not better than the black wii u..

    • Elem187

Why isn’t it better? I like it far better. I didn’t have to pay for 32gb of flash memory…. I get to add my own harddrive (which I did) that can store up to 300+ retail games (1500gb WD drive)

I like when companies give me the CHOICE to choose (yeah I know what a concept) to do my own thing instead of charging me an arm and a leg for som proprietary drive I would eventually need to upgrade. By allowing me to do add as much storage as I think I need. I was able to purchase a harddrive that fits my needs specifically for a price that is far far cheaper than anything a platform holder could ever put into a box.

if Nintendo added massive 500gb harddrives, the $350 price tag so many haters are complaining about would be that 400-425 price tag that they would be complaining about…. for a system some critics say is too expensive, why would you want to make it even more expensive?

      • CaesarGood

U know what that’s good for u, but I really don’t care though..It doesn’t mean much to me.

      • victor

Why did thy not give us the choice to not have a gamepad that cost 100$. And ps4 is ony 50$ whit more memory and better hardware so it cant be that expensive to have better memmory hardware

        • Akatosh

Learn to spell before you troll.

    • Leo

Simply because it becomes a rare piece of history. Videogame collectors will fight for a model that were avaiable for only a limited time in the market. It always happens and it will happen with the Basic Model if Nintendo decides to recall it from the market. Wait a few more years and those WiiU Basic packages will skyrocket on online auctions.

    • jay

It becomes “rare”. There are Pennies that are worth thousands of dollars.

  • Elem187

news to me, last I checked the Wii U already showed several games the PS3 would either wouldn’t be able to run or would choke attempting it.
The very best looking game on the PS3 is TLOU, and Mario Kart 8 destroyed it on a technical level…. The lighting wouldn’t be possible on the PS3 alone. The ps3 doesn’t support dynamic lighting, everything had to be prebaked just to get the effect of dynamic lighting, which still looks a lame attempt anyways… How about the bokeh in MK8, far beyond anything we have seen on the PS3. Bokeh on the ps3 looked like someone smeared vaseline on the camera lense.

And lets look at performance. The very best looking game on the ps3, TLOU ran at a sluggish 28 fps, and under stress dropped all the way down to the low 20′s… that is a SLIDESHOW…. Wii U can run that visually superior game, MK8 at a full 60fps with splitscreen two player AND while rendering a second screen on the gamepad.

sorry troll, the Wii U is way out of the PS3′s league. You mad, bro?

    • Zombie Boy

      Flag and ignore him.

    • Darkness

I know flagging and ignoring is a good idea, but you just destroyed this troll (on the graphics side of things)

  • Elem187

Why are you happy about Sony price gouging you on a harddrive?
Nintendo is far more consumer friendly by allowing its customers to have a CHOICE in how much or how little storage they need…. By keeping the flash memory relatively small, they don’t gouge their customers that may only buy the system for a few retail disc games and download some VC/Eshop titles… by having the option of connecting an external hdd, I got to CHOOSE (what a concept) how much I wanted.

The PS4, you are paying for that HDD they stuffed in there at a massive mark up. And you will be paying for that harddrive in multiple way (your new pay to play multiplayer, higher accessory costs, etc)… and you also don’t get a game with that.

    • victor

If Nintendo let ppl chose why did thy not let us chose if we wanted a gamepad for 100$ then

      • Akatosh

Why do I have to have a PS4 controller for $50 then?

  • Zombie Boy

    Flag and ignore, guys.

  • Brandon Gardner

I hate to agree with you and I know people here hate to admit the truth but I think that’s true…. Only for $50 more I can get more memory and plus a Blu ray player with more games… Nintendo really should have thought about every aspect for this system instead of releasing it like the way it did. Nintendo has so much potential but they haven’t reached it yet

    • Luffy

but then again, the PS4 doesn’t have the gamepad.
And i really love the gamepad! Without a doubt, my favorite controller ever!
(Damn I wish PS4 had copied Nintendo on that one. I just love the concept and would like all games to take advantage of this, be it on PS4 or Wii U. But now, only the Wii U as it, so it’s my favorite console)

and I really don’t care about a blue ray player….

      • Brandon Gardner

Yeah the Gamepad is a excellent device

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

You mean for $100 more… Part of the $350 console includes a game. So if you factor that game into the equation the PS4 will cost $460 with a game to play out of the box.

      • Brandon Gardner

Be honest with yourself NintendoLand isn’t worth $60.00

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I’ll give you that.. Should be a $39.99 title. Still the added game adds value to the system and while it may not be a AAA title it gives something to play.. If you buy a PS4 you have to buy at least one game because it is not like you can play any of your PS3 games on it.

          • Brandon Gardner

I am not disagreeing with you, having a game included with a console i think is a major plus point… My only issue with Nintendo with the Wii U is I wouldn’t have mind spending $400 or more with memory and better enhanced graphics to make it seem like it was truly “next-gen” I just wish they would have invested a little more time and energy in the console… People care more about “graphics” than they do gameplay which makes us as Nintendo fans different but Nintendo needs to figure out how to handle both… If they did than they would be running into the issues they have now with other software developers…. Nintendo should have made the best damn system they possibly could have

          • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I think the graphics will be fine. Maybe a bit less than what the PS4 can do as that definitely takes the power crown this generation. I just think that since many 3rd parties like to develop on their console of choice they simply port over those games giving the game a crappier look that if the game was developed on the console DEV kit directly.

People care about graphics because that is the first thing they see in game trailers and when the load the game the first time. It is like seeking out a good looking girlfriend or boyfriend. But good looks only goes so far.

IMO Nintendo’s biggest fail was not having a AAA title at launch and then another one 6 – 8 months later. Part of the reason the Wii sold so well at launch and stayed selling (at least in the initial launch Window and for about a year) was that a new AAA title came out with Twilight Princess at the same time. Despite that game being made for GC as well it was still a highly sought after title. Then when people got the system and Wii Sports revolutionized how people play video games word of mouth and people’s experiences kept that system selling. No AAA title with the Wii U and NintendoLand not revolutionizing the gamepad in the way Nintendo hoped really hurt the system and then game the game delays.

So mistakes were made and admitted but I fully believe the system will turn around. I think if anything the system needs to go for $299 w/ 32GB and NIntendoland Preloaded. Not necessarily a price drop overall but a reorganization of the way it is delivered. I find NintendoLand very fun to play and even some games playing solo, but it is not the AAA title we all want and need

          • Brandon Gardner

Very well said… I totally agree… NintendoLand was great but I would have loved the option to play online as well

          • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

That is another area where Nintendo needs to rethink it’s strategy. I love having local Mult-Player and prefer that most of the time over playing on the internet. Especially with people I do not know. But if they want online to take off with 3rd parties they need to do it first where ever possible. If the game is intended to have multiplayer at the same time then online should be an option. Like Super Mario 3D world being local only?? What’s up with that? Game would be nice if you could play and friends could join in mid-game. Sure it would be limited to 4 players or so but still could be fun.

          • Brandon Gardner

EXACTLY!!!! I said the same thing to my friend the other day…. 3D World should have really utilized online gaming…. It does have the potential to do that but I think it would have been great and made the experience much better.

          • victor

people chose a girlfriends because thy look good. So girls get nice dress. But nintendo did not , thy did not want to compete so thy got a gamepad. the end

          • Guest

            Yeah they totally ignored looks

          • victor

Its a metaphor for hardware and yes thy did

          • Akatosh

You spelled, “they,” wrong. Just to let you know.

          • jay
          • Akatosh

I’m glad I’m not your girlfriend, because when I look for a boyfriend, I look at their personality first, because quite honestly, that defines whether they look good or not to me.

Relationships built around looks last a week tops and are called, “high school,” relationships.

Of course this is completely off the topic of games…

            hmm…

          • jay

truly “next gen”? Did you know E3 attendees generally agreed that Mario Kart 8 was the best looking game on the show floor?

Don’t be fooled by media propaganda. The graphics leaps are officially over.

          • Brandon Gardner

I am not being fooled by media propaganda I am going by from what I see and from what I know.

          • jay

            Point being. This:

The jump from Wii to Wii U is ENORMOUS. So YOU win there.

in 2012 do you remember fanboys screaming “Wii U is underpowered just wait until ps4/720 graphics. They’ll crush Ninty”.

            NEVER HAPPENED.

The graphical difference between XBOne/Wii U/PS4 will be so damn close it will vary.

So people are making a bigger deal about all this than it really is.

          • Akatosh

People hear, “Wii U is slightly under powered compared to PS4 and Xbox Done” and automatically think back to last gen.

            The Curse of the Wii.

        • jay

But at least you can play the Wii U out of the box.

      • jay

Yeah i noticed fanboys ignore that and act like 400 will get them playing.

    • BIG Franky

i dunno…. as a PS3 owner that was researching what nextgen system to purchase, i woudl consider myself fairly a typical VG console customer…. memory had ZERO impact on my decision because in 20 yrs of gaming i have never needed or used it (yes, i understand it really only applies to more recent years), but i just buy games on the disc and play them that way. and as far as a blu ray player is concerned…. are we to believe that the typical nextgen gaming console customer doesnt have a bluray player yet? typically people like us are tech junkies and a bluray has been a part of our home theater system for 5+ yrs now….. i just dont see that as a feature that moves systems. not now… maybe 6 yrs ago, but not now…. you can pick up a highly rated bluray player for less than a $100 now…. plus i’d be willing to bet 90+% of people looking to buy a nextgen console already have one… and the remaining people could care less.

  • trevelyn412

remember when Sony was hacked any they came out publicly to bow in dishonour? I feel like it’s Ninty’s turn to do so and apologize.

    • jay

Poor marketing is no where near the same page as getting millions of people’s personal information stolen.

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Well I still think the Wii offers good value into a home console gaming system I think they should drop the 8GB model all together and just offer the 32GB in black and white with SKUs for the system alone and one with Nintendoland. Maybe even put NintendoLand preinstalled on the Flash memory and no disc.

Then when the the new Zelda game comes out have a 64GB version bundle with the game and make it gold and call it the Zelda64 Edition. I would buy that if I could semi-easily transfer over my account and my games to it.

  • Maraccuda

Aw man, don’t bring up the old ‘collector’s item’, I’m gonna have to buy one now for that exact purpose. Curse my collecting blood.

  • springer85

For only $50 more consumers can buy a next gen console that has 500gb storage and a blu ray player before even mentioning games!!!
$50 more than a Wii U and you get all that extra storage and a blu ray player!!!
Is a total no brainer and will be the reason no one buys a gimmick U this xmas!!!

    • Fred

The only thing you forgot is people like me really want to play Nintendo’s games and you can’t play them on a PS4

      • victor

I am the same way. But I would love if i could play them in next gen graphic and some 3rd parties games too

        • 00EpicGamer00

The Wii U is next-gen and has 3rd party games.

Don’t you dare responding saying “NO! Wii U nawt next-gen! da graphics power not strong! and it old, nawt new!” First of all, all the consoles have the same graphical resolution. 1080 HD, that’s it, no more. Second of all, just because it got released first, doesn’t mean it’s “last-gen”. The Wii U was the START of this gen.

          • victor

Wii U is alltiel more powerful then xbox360 and ps3 so the graphics are not from this generation. Ps4 have allot more power. But on the other hand it cost 50$ more then wiiu.

          • 00EpicGamer00

            Oh my god -.-
Power has nothing to do with next-gen! It’s the time the console comes out! The Wii U’s power is ABOUT the same as the PS4 and Xbone. The other two, are just SLIGHTLY more powerful. There’s not going to be THAT dramatic of a difference.

Also, umm….the graphics are from this generation, smart one -.-
Why do you think the Wii U can run up to 1080 HD? The PS3 or Xbox 360 wasn’t able to do that. Maybe with some of their games, but not many.

          • victor

ABOUT ? wow… its like saying wii and xbox360 have ABOUT the same power. Next gen hardware is when hardware comes out. And wii U hardware was avaibel 7years ago

          • 00EpicGamer00

Are you really THIS stupid? Of course the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 didn’t have about the same power. The Wii could only do 420 or something, while the PS3 and Xbox 360 could do 720. That was a completely different time. Nintendo didn’t care about having the strongest console in the world, or about HD.

What I’m saying is, the Wii U, PS4, and Xbox one all have about the same power. Can all three of them do 1080 HD? Yes, they can. sure the other two have more space and whatnot. But, all three of them are ALMOST the same, graphically. Like I keep saying, the PS4 and Xbone are just SLIGHTLY more powerful. There is not a major difference, aside from space and whatnot. But that’s why you go out and buy extra storage units for the Wii U.

If the hardware was available 7 years ago, then why didn’t the PS3 and Xbox 360 do 1080 HD? They could only do 720.

          • victor

Look it up wii u is slightly more powerful in some areas then ps3 but ps4 is much more then wii u and ps3. Wiiu is wii all over again go for gimmick instead of power

          • 00EpicGamer00

Being a retard again, eh? Can you even read? All three consoles can produce up to 1080 HD! Quit trying to give yourself false hope. The three consoles are basically the same. Just shut up and admit it already. The last-gen with the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360. The Wii’s graphical power was VASTLY different from the other two. BUT, like I keep on saying. All three consoles (Wii U, PS4, and Xbone) are almost the same. Quit trying to look to the past to try and win an argument.

I don’t understand how a console that’s SUPPOSE to bring enjoyment is a gimmick. So, does that mean DVD players are gimmicks too? Are computers gimmicks as well? Please, stop being a retard and just grow up.

          • victor

OK dude you convinced me wii u is as powerfull as ps4 xbox one all ppl saying other is retard

          • 00EpicGamer00

YES! Thank you for recognizing intelligence. I knew you still had hope left. Also, please work on your spelling, it’s terrible!

          • NkoSekirei

nope sry dude i have to disagree with u on ur comment and wii u isnt like the wii and ps3 and 360 run on outdated specs while wii u runs on 2011 specs

          • victor

          • NkoSekirei

dont forget wii u can run unreal engine 4,frostbite engine and other powerful engines.

          • 00EpicGamer00

Thank you. I completely forgot about that, silly me.

          • NkoSekirei

but graphics arnt everything its all about good quality games but it seems most of the 3rd party devs dont get it cause their lazy and they should know better that putting games on a console helps boost sales for the console.Wii u runs on 2011 specs while ps4 and xbox one run on 2012 specs

          • victor

Gameplay is more important then graphics but why cant we have both ? 3rd party games don’t sell so why should thy invest in it ? Wii u have some better specs then ps3 but thy wont be abel to port next gen games too wiiu .

          • 00EpicGamer00

3rd party games don’t sell very well on Nintendo consoles because most of the time, they give us half-assed ports. If they’re going to give us a 3rd party game, then make it 100% fair, no cutting anything out.
Umm…if they can’t port “next-gen” (it’s really sad that you don’t know what next-gen is) to the Wii U, than how are we getting Black ops ghosts? Or Assassin’s Creed? Or Watch dogs?

          • Akatosh

The Wii U is only slightly less powerful then PS4 and One. The only reason developers would refuse to port is because they’re lazy SonySoft folk who don’t want to adapt to the new architecture. Case closed.

    • 00EpicGamer00

“ONLY $50″ Some people can’t afford an extra $50.

You do realize you can buy separate storage units, and install them in the Wii U, right? Therefore, some peoples Wii U’s could have 800gb, you jealous?

Who cares about a blu-ray player? you can easily just go to the store and buy one. It’s not that difficult these days. So, if I have a Wii U and a blu-ray player, I got myself a PS4? Cool.
Just look at Walmart’s blu-ray section, on their site. Blu-ray players are WAY cheaper than a PS4: http://www.walmart.com/browse/tv-video/dvd-blu-ray-players/3944_1060825_95987/

Umm no, there WILL be a reason to buy a Wii U. Say it with me, “Pikmin”, “Zelda”, “Mario”, “Donkey Kong” “3rd party games”. Any other questions, or concerns?

Oh, and one more thing, is it wrong to you, if someone owns two (2) consoles? What if someone goes and gets a Wii U and a PS4? Would that be the end of the world to you? I don’t have a problem if someone owns more than one (1) console. OR, if they have a specific company they want to stick to. I’m perfectly fine with that. What I hate is when people try to act like their console is all high and mighty. Just, play the console, okay? Quit worrying about who’s “specs” is better. In the end, it all doesn’t matter. Worrying about specs, is like worrying about your popularity in school. It doesn’t matter in the end! Just have fun with what you love.

    • jay

Watching the price is right and blu ray is a gimmick Get your language right.

    • tronic307

My Wii U gets along with my monster gaming PC, my Xbox 360, etc. Plus, I have a PS4 preordered. Why choose between consoles unless you’re broke, cheap, or a combination of both?

  • BIG Franky

why is Nintendo’s previous launch relevent but the other systems aren’t? At the end of the day, there was no conceivable way that the Wii-U could’ve lived up to the hype fo the Wii… and I doubt Nintendo planned on that happening…
The PS2 outsold the PS3 for 2 full years. The reason that is relevent is because that is the norm. Same with the Ds and the 3Ds, same with the NES and SNES…. and it will be the same with the NextGen consoles released later this year. that is just how it works. People need to relax. I just got my Wii U (not even hooked up yet as I’ve been traveling a lot lately with work)… I’ve pre-ordered a slew of titles. I waited to make my purchase until after E3 to wait and see what PS$ and XB1 were all abotu and opted for the Wii. I’m psyched.

    • jay

People are kidding themselves if they think the ps4/xb1 are gonna sell like the previous generation.

  • springer85

Sony and Microsoft have kept the same controller for 3 GENERATIONS with minor tweaks and still sold like hot cakes!!!
For Nintendo to change after 1 generation and go in to the tablet market is one of their biggest ever mistakes!!
They should have kept with the Wii controller but just made it a 100 times better and more responsive and made a more powerful console!!
The Wii was so popular as it got everyone up out of their seats to play games……….with the Wii U they gone backwards and put the same consumers back in those seats which is an epic fail!!!

    • Fred

They are still using Wii Remotes. They are a little better then the original Wii Remotes as they are now Wii Remote Pluses. How much the motion control is used will depend on games, but the game that comes with the Wii U (Nintendo Land) uses them extensively

    • 00EpicGamer00

Umm…what person stands up to play Video games? I never stood up when playing a Wii game. I guess games like “Wii Fit” and “Just Dance” you would stand up to play, but still. You shouldn’t say “it got EVERYONE up out of their seats” when that’s obviously incorrect.

      • jay

lol this is the same idiot that called the Wii Remote a gimmick!!

        • 00EpicGamer00

What the!? Why is he praising it then!? What is going on here? o.o

        • greengecko007

A regular Wii Remote without motion plus was a gimmick. The motion controls were as basic as pointing at the screen and clicking a button, or shaking your wrist. Motion gaming wasn’t taken to the next level by Nintendo until they revealed motion plus, which unfortunately, wasn’t supported very much. While I enjoyed games like Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy, there wasn’t a single time when I thought, “Wow, these controls are really adding to the experience!” Skyward Sword on the other hand blew me away with how much the 1:1 motion controls added to the experience.

    • jay

Wii U is not a tablet.

      Funny you mentioned tablets because:

    • NkoSekirei

the biggest mistake is allowing u post on this site dam troll

  • Luffy

    Will you shut up already?

  • Saleh Sbeiti

Well, looks like my Wii U is gonna be a collectable one day :>

  • Decker Shado

Okay, there are quite a few things you keep going on about that I must ask.
First off is “slurpers” as in “Ninty Slurpers.” What in the heck does that even mean? It’s hard to insult people with words/phrases that may as well be static.
Second.. you seem to have this strange idea that the Wii U is a tablet. Comparisons between the Surface Pro, an ultrabook in tablet form, and the iPad I understand. They may be very different machines, but they can serve similar purposes. The Wii U though? Who thinks for a second that the system is a tablet? The gamepad has a touchscreen. That didn’t make the DS a tablet, that didn’t make the Vita a tablet (and Vita arbitrarily could fit in there quite a bit better) so why does it make the Wii U a tablet?
Finally… why spend so much of your time, creating multiple accounts, often times posting between your multiple accounts to agree with yourself, when it’s just making you look like a fool with every post? I know with internet anonymity you know that you, yourself, are safe from the repercussions.. but how many times must you scream incoherently and fling poo at people passing by before it gets old. Seriously?

  • Fred

People were saying the very same thing about the original DS at first, but it turned out ok. You might be right, but I love it and last night my house had 5 12-year old boys in it they wanted to play video games and I have a PS3, Wii, Game Cube, and Wii U. All they wanted to play was the Wii U. I hope things turn around for the Wii U soon.

    • Akatosh

They WILL. Japan will inevitably have a sale turnaround. It doesn’t even matter too much if the other countries have problems if the mother country has their stock flying off shelves.

  • Fred

I’m stoked for Mario 3D World. 3D Land is my favorite 3DS game

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Hey Ashley could you do something about this springer guy.. He is spamming the website. No need to post 20 times in like 2 minutes calling people names and such.

On a related note… what the hell is a slurper?? Is that some insult made up by trolls because they are so insecure in their own lives they have to make up silly names?

    • Zombie Boy

I’m flagging pretty much every post of his, and they’re already showing up as ‘awaiting moderation’, so it shouldn’t be long now before he’s gone. I wonder if he even realises that people can’t see most of his posts?

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Sad part is if he could form a complete sentence and present his views in mature and non confrontational manner then it would be fine. Oh and the repeated name calling is what gets me. You have to be a real immature person to repeatedly use a phrase like Ninty Slurpers over and over.

        • Zombie Boy

I agree, I’m all up for an intelligent debate, but some people just aren’t intelligent enough for that…

    • Brandon Gardner

Hey he has been pretty annoying with his post and has been taking it a little bit too far on some of them especially but he is entitled to his own opinion though. I have made comments on here that people haven’t agreed with and people have said some negative things to me as well…. It sucks when people don’t agree always on Nintendo here and always give their opinions on what we “think” Nintendo did wrong and what they should do…. We are the first people to get down voted or say we aren’t a Nintendo fan which is BS… Just because someone isn’t one sided doesn’t mean they can’t speak their mind

      • Zombie Boy

There’s a difference between being opinionated and being a bully though. He is just here to cause misery to others, not have any kind of intelligent debate. I’m not going to tolerate that kind of disrespect. End of story.

        • Brandon Gardner

Well put on your big boy draws and call it a day… I am sorry if he hurt your feelings or offended you but it isn’t much he can do over the internet…. Ignore it and learn how to fight your battles when necessary

          • Zombie Boy

I fought my battles. I flagged him and moved on, because I’m not going to lower myself to his standards. Which is the more mature response, that or arguing like children over the internet?

  • Potemkin

He was also the man responsible for terrible ideas (sticking to cartridges, mini disk, friend codes, no HD support with Wii). The man is a genius with games, but with hardware he’s not that good.

    • victor

No HD on Wii was biggest fuck upp in gaming history.

      • Akatosh

For being the biggest f*** up the Wii sure did sell well…

        hmm….

  • Decker Shado

Hm… Personally, I don’t feel these retailers deciding not to carry the basic model bodes well in the long run.

Mainly, it’s because it is the lower price point – if there would be a $50 price drop, the basic would end up in $250 range, which is equal to the original Wii’s launch price. That would attract many looking for the best “deal” on a next-gen console. The problem with it not moving at launch, was all those of us out looking to buy it (myself included) were after the latest and the greatest, and gravitated towards the Deluxe set.

The storage space isn’t so big an issue though.. at least no more than the Deluxe is. At the end of the day, it’s a good idea to get external storage for both SKUs – you’re simply able to put it off for longer with the Deluxe. As others have stated before, if you’re just interested in casual on-disk gaming, the Basic is adequate.

With retailers not carrying that model anymore, when the games come and the casuals go a-shopping, the SKU that would attract them the most will be absent. It will be Deluxe or nothing, and if they realize there’s a cheaper SKU that the stores simply aren’t carrying, they may feel like they’re getting ripped off being forced into the Deluxe, which could lead them to simply go to a different machine.

A lot of maybe coulds and woulds.. but the basic set does have it’s place in the big picture.

    • jay

Even casuals prefer deluxe. I know I’m one of them. NintendoLand baby!!

      • ETeach

Hey, call Nintendoland ‘casual’, but getting mastery in those games definitely takes some hardcore skill :)

  • Brandon Gardner

I agree I am totally PRO NINTENDO let’s get that straight but when I call Nintendo out and say how I feel about them and its something I don’t agree than I am a troll

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I guess the difference is you can form complete sentences, do not claim over and over you are just spreading the truth and to and proclaim DOOM!!!!

I am all for having a constructive argument but not many can do that on either side but you have to admit the ones that like to spread negativity are far worse than the ones that do not spread negativity.

      • Truthteller

        I think it’s the suit.

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

You do the same very often… Claiming you are just saying the truth all the time is a troll type tactic.

  • Grulnork

Well I got the basic version for 150 pounds and that was a good price. I don’t really see much benefit from 32GB flash memory as if you want to store digital games you better get a harddisk. And the price difference between basic and deluxe editions is big enough to buy a harddisk and a game. I am happy I got mine before it got phased out on sale on Amazon a few months ago. :)

  • springer85

Exactly anybody comes on here and tell the truth about Nintendo and they all cry and flag and ask that person to be banned!!
Sales,3rd party turning their backs, zero marketing yet they cannot except that Nintendo is at fault!!!

    • jay

I tell the truth and I don’t get flagged.

    • tronic307

“Nintendo slurpers” is not the truth. It is offensive, and will get you banned AGAIN. I know who you are…

  • Metal_Man_v2

I’ve said it a million times to other people and I’ll say it here again. The international pricing for the Wii U was poorly done. $300 for a basic Wii U and $350 for a deluxe Wii U in the US sounds fair to me, but take a look at the launch prices in other countries.

    Australia – Basic $349.95 Deluxe $429.95

UK – Basic 249 pounds Deluxe 299 pounds – which equates to $379.13 and $455.26

Those are just two examples from relatively large international markets. But it shows that the initial surge in sales during the launch period were from only hardcore and truly dedicated NIntendo fans.
    .
Price cuts during the Wii U’s lifetime has leveled the playing field more across the international markets, but potential buyers still don’t see that must have feature in the Wii U.

Long story short, sales will most likely pick up when games come out that people actually want, and advertising becomes much more proactive. Nintendo wasn’t ready to launch this last fall, we all know that, time to move on.

  • RoboticLink

I don’t care about the Basic, the deluxe is way cooler

  • audi lover

    Haha idiot

  • 00EpicGamer00

If you were telling the truth then you’d give sources. You’ve never said one thing that’s true about Nintendo. Unless you count being a “captain obvious”. Really, all you do is say the same thing over and over again.

    • tronic307

Plus, he rarely even addresses the topic at hand. Without our responses, he would be utterly irrelevant.

    • Truthteller

When people ask, I give it.

        as Duke Nukem would say
        “blow it out your ass!”

      • 00EpicGamer00

        Lying, as usual.

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

You just keep proving my point.

  • Yousif Alromaithi

Cancel this and upgrade it into a 32gb. Awesome move. Nintendo just do it.

  • jay

But you lie all the time. How does that make you any better? Mr. “Truth”

  • jay

What a nerdy fantasy. Don’t you have a gamerscore to increase or something?

  • Yen

Let’s see… about 1 million difference in sales between the Vita and the U, but Vita has been out for a year longer. Vita’s predecessor, the PSP, is still getting games developed that are not for the Vita, while Wii U will be getting a good library soon despite it being a bit later than it should have. I’d say the Vita is failing a bit harder.

    • jay

      Ouch! Even I felt that!

Truth is Wii U isn’t selling as expected BUT it isn’t selling bad either.

  • jay

” Sony fans know that the Vita has been one epic fail mistake”

Unfortunately sony hasn’t come that realization as half their e3 presentation was vita.

“ask that person to be banned!!!”

You’re not a sony fan, you’re a troll. BIG difference dude.

  • JBeauregard

Should have never come out with the 8GB model any way. However, I was thinking the same thing recently; in that, the white model probably will become a collector’s item. That’s doesn’t mean I have money for one, though :’(

  • discuss

This is a good thing. 8GB models are bad for the E-shop.

  • Castamere

Perhaps Nintendo’s going to start offering a White Deluxe Set, just like in Japan.

    • NkoSekirei

they did say they were making a white deluxe edtion wii u and hopefully more colors become available as well

  • NkoSekirei

ur the only one thats about to be discounted on here troll

  • NkoSekirei

add this guy to the ban hammer list too

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Sad part is he has been banned before more than once for his hate posting. There is a way to post about things you do not like about a company in a constructive way and he does not do that. All he does is project doom and hate and calls it the truth and if some comes back with actual facts he gets defensive and calls them names and liars

  • NkoSekirei

u pull lies out of ur @$$ just like the past trolls have been doing

    • Truthteller

You are one of the main haters/harassers.

  • tronic307

Enough! The truth is subjective, as humans are temporal, finite beings. We cannot step back and review the whole of creation; we can only bear witness to our individual experiences, which is the very definition of BELIEF.

    Your name is hypocritical.

I think I get it Nintendo is Japanese and the color of death in Japan? WHITE.

  • Akatosh

    You mean “discontinued”?

You have revealed the depth of your intelligence.

Sales will spike in Japan no matter what when good games come out. As long as sales spike there, the Wii U will be golden, no matter what. And the sales WILL spike in Japan because Nintendo games top charts over there.

Well I have a basic one with an external hard drive connected so I don’t need an upgrade to the deluxe and I’m satisfied.

  • XiC

I’m glad they’re phasing it out. In Canadian Walmarts the Wii U basic is now only $200. If anyone doesn’t have a Wii U, now is the best time to get one.

  • Kenshin0011

Nintendo, do something drastic like with the 3DS! Phase out the white model and lower the Deluxe price to $249.99. With new games fans have been waiting for finally coming out, a holiday price cut, and being the cheapest next gen console, sales will skyrocket! Maybe not to last gen Wii levels, but well enough to happily stay afloat and let it get to the status the 3DS is at.

  • Energonkid

I have the basic and a flash drive so that’s okay!

i recently sold my Wii U, it’s a good product it just was a bad time for it
