Ubisoft announces Child of Light for Wii U

child_of_light_battle

Ubisoft has announced a new game called Child of Light, a platformer RPG that will be coming to the Wii U. The protagonist of the game is called Aurora, a young princess whose soul is trapped in a waking dream. It’s up to Aurora to restore the sun, moon and stars after the Black Queen has taken them, as they’re the three light sources in the kingdom of Lemuria.

Aurora has the power to fight creatures of the dark in turn-based combat. She also has a fire-fly companion called Igniculus, who functions similarly in co-op mode as Murfy in Rayman Legends. The game will be released in 2014 on the Nintendo eShop. You can check out the trailer below and let us know what you think!

Thank you Ubisoft! You’re my second new best friend!

  • david jarman

At first I thought it said, “Touch yourself in bed!”

I’m glad I listened to it again to hear “tuck yourself in bed”

Keep in mind I’m listening to at low volume at work.

    • Tim van Broekhoven

      • david jarman

        lol!

        • IcyCatt

          OMG I’M DYING!

  • Marcus Navarro

Keep ‘em coming, Ubi. You guys have been quite the support-
Wait, what? Yet ANOTHER 2D platformer? C’mon, son! Is this the Wii U or Sega Genesis? Granted the game looks cool, but how many more of these games must flood the library?

Brace yourselves, the trolls are coming…

    • Mysterious Destiny

There’s nothing wrong with 2D games in the modern age. And besides, I’d take these “boring” 2D platformers over the bland-ass first-person shooters that flood the market any day. There are way more FPS’s then there are 2D games.

      Just saying.

    • jay

I wish that “truth” troll were here to comment “Wow look at the Wii U hardware capabilities” like he always does, only to realize it’s also coming to the ps4/XBOne.

      • Clel

And then he actually comes and comments here and you’re not happy, even though you sent a blatant invitation for him to do so…

        • The Clockwork Being

          Well said Clel.

          • jay

            “Weave truthtroller alone!!”

        • jay

Chill, who said I hated him? I don’t hate him at all. Just repeating what he’s done in the past.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

If that’s the case, then why talk about him at all? Lol. You apparently have some hate for him if you are to mention him in anything that’s good news. How about not mentioning him at all and quit instigating a fight that comes from comments like these? Clel is right, stop giving him invites, cause all they do is start flame wars.

          • Clel

Where did I say you hated him?

EDIT: Oh I think you meant to answer Daniel Gonzalez

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Nah, my comment came after his. :P

    • Mark

I’d play Sonic 2 and Super Mario World any day over Battlefield 4 or Call of Duty.

      • Marcus Navarro

For the record, I love platformers, but there’s just too many of them on the Wii U right now. I’m right with ya, but this is getting ridiculous.

        • Mark

It makes me think of the Sega Saturn. Although that thing could’ve been a 3D game beast (if done properly, good programming), it excelled in 2D games. The Wii U also takes this example in a certain way because it is capable enough to blow are minds away, but it seems devs don’t want to tap into the system’s potential and decide to play it easy and safe.

        • Javy G

Sonic: Lost World and Windwaker should save us from that… I just really hoped on a Galaxy game for Wii U! Even though Mario didn’t say much, you can sense the adventure of the story when talking to all these crazy-looking characters. The worlds felt enormous, the bosses were unlike anything we ever seen before and the replay value with all these challenges and green stars!

          • Marcus Navarro

Sonic Lost World’s gonna be awesome. And a SMG for Wii U will just…$_$

    • david jarman

2d or not 2d! Who cares is the question? lol! :D

    • Zombie Boy

I LOVED the Genesis days! As long as the games are good, I’ll buy ‘em!

    • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

There is actually two new 2D games from Ubi. It’s because they use the Rayman Legend engine.

The second game is “Soldats Inconnus” (Unknow Soldiers in french).

    • Magnus Eriksson

      You called?

      • Marcus Navarro

No. But you’re welcome any time, Magnus!

    • The Clockwork Being

This does look neat but yeah look(i would buy it) at the other games they have coming for other systems.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War — Coming to PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC

Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD — This is confirmed for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC

The closes we got from that game is a DLC for Rayman hat from the game when it was still a Vita exclusive. Really not impressed by Ubisoft right now. Although I do encourage buying their games to show them that they should support the Wii U but ill post a paragraph about it later.

  • Clel

    Magnus raging in 3… 2…

    • Zombie Boy

      Lol!

    • Magnus Eriksson

I tried, but it actually looked kind of neat. :)

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

        props

  • Rémi

look promising, i hope the RPG combat is well done :)

    • Daniel Gonzalez

It looks pretty good. Will probably pick it up.

  • Schultz38

I’m glad to see Ubisoft is still supportive of the WiiU. Although I have complete faith in Nintendo, it’s still a pretty big risk for Ubi.

Thank you Ubisoft for not letting/helping the Wii U wither away! :D

  • Arthur Jarret

To add further information to this consice but informative article, this game uses the UbiArt engine, which was originally developed for the well-received Rayman Legends.

Another game using the UbiArt engine has also been announced, called Valiant hearts: The great war – but unfortunately no Wii U version was mentioned. This game is slated for release on PS3, Xbox 360, PC, PS4 and Xbox One some time next year.

We trust that the WiiUdaily staff have contacted Ubisoft for further comment on that. (hint, hint)

    • Gotallofthem

Maybe the Wii U cant handle the power of that game…..

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        Oh, the horror.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Well, not every game will come to Wii U, but at least Child of Light is.

      • Arthur Jarret

Sorry, I choose to focus solely on the bad things.

All console platforms except wii U???
        Rabble rabble rabble!

        • Daniel Gonzalez

It sucks. It might make on the Wii U at a later time perhaps.

          • Arthur Jarret

Rabble Rabble Too late Rabble Rabble

  • Schultz38

    Dat art style though.

And a female protagonist? I’m definitely interested.

  • Entropyguy

This looks beautiful. Though, yeah, the Wii U does seem to be kind of platformer-heavy. On the plus side, there could definitely stand to be more games with female protagonists.

  • Jon

I believe I remember that truthteller guy saying how Ubi will drop nintendo at the end of this year because of the Wii U being a failure….. I guess he was wrong.

    • Zombie Boy

Really? Nah… How could he be wrong if he always tells the truth (as opposed to biased opinions)?

      EDIT: Sarcasm, guys…

    • jay

Shhh… Don’t talk about him. Apparently you’re only inviting him back and unhappy when he returns. lol

All jokes aside, he said the Wii U would be discontinued in march 2014. I hope he didn’t get himself banned because I wanted to hold him up to that.

  • Smartass2

    Looks good.

  • Will (ishigum)

Since Rayman Legends is selling well on the Wii U (much better than on the other consoles especially in Canada) and the fact that the new Wii U / Wind Waker bundle is doing well on Amazon Canada, I think Ubisoft is realizing the potential of the Wii U as a competitor in the console market. Their patience will pay off.

  • SleepySkullhead

Platformer RPG, sounds like it could be similar to Paper Mario. I’m interested now.

    • Adrian

I hope not, paper Mario was horrible. I felt like it was made for 3 year olds (even when I was 6, I would have considered that game too ridiculously easy and nonsensicle for me).

      • Marcus Navarro

Depends on which one you’re referencing. Paper Mario and the 1000 Year Door was quite a nifty game.

        • david jarman

That one rocked the hiz-house! For reals!

          • Marcus Navarro

XDDD Take my upvote and get the hell outta here!! LOL!!

          • david jarman

            lol!

        • Adrian

I only played the one for Wii

      • Guest

Unless you mean the 3DS one – I feel like the lady below after reading your comment.

        • Arthur Jarret

Wow… weird how deleting comments work (only deletes the name…)

          Disqus has some strange functions…

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            True story.

      • Arthur Jarret

I really hope you mean the 3DS one – as the first two games were amazing.

In fact, I feel a little like the lady below after reading your comment.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Hooooray! Another platformer. Just what Nintendo needs to get back on track! Take that Playstation 3!

Edit: Looked at the video after this comment. It actually look pretty neat.

  • Gonçalo Fernandes

    Yes!
    I love UbiArt games!

  • Htbaa

Looks interesting and cool to know it’s coming to the Wii U as well.

  • Madmagican

I dunno about you guys, but I’m not sick of platformers yet and it’s games like this and Shovel Knight and Mighty No.9 and Rayman Legends that make me continue to love 2D platformers
Also this Child of Light appears to be combining my two favorite genres and that gets me all tingly :)

  • Yoshifan3

looks pretty lame, give us real games.

    • Jon

      define real game….

      • Yoshifan3

rainbow six, ghost recon, beyond good and evil, how about an actual sequel to I am alive? even though the game wasnt great they could still make an actual sequel, after all it was supposed to be a full retail game.

thats just ubisoft games. need i go on to other games from other companies?

but why should it matter? nintendo fans dont like 3rd party games, you like only nintendo games, thats what you buy, but you guys complain of no 3rd party support. ps4 and xbox one have tons of 3rd party support.

do you guys wonder why? because they buy the games.

        • Zuxs13

          lame.

          • Yoshifan3

            like your social life?

        • david jarman

Games are games. Trine 1 and 2 are real games and they’re fantastic. Rayman is very much a real and fantastical gaming experience. This game is using that same engine. This game is third party and you have it backwards if we don’t support them then we are just giving them reasons not to port any other games. So its a vicious circle. Sony and Ms don’t buy the games unless its an exclusive. It real does come down to install base. So its people like you that complain about no third party support, but don’t support them when they test the waters. Now, you don’t have to buy it if you don’t like it, but don’t get upset cause they gave us a game. Show some support and be appreciative and that will get right attention from them to want to port other games.

          • Yoshifan3

you have it backwards bud. i do appreciate the 3rd party support, but most nintendo fans dont and say “i only bought my wii u for nintendo games” but cry and moan when ubisoft or any other 3rd party skips the wii u and then boycott the company.

          • david jarman

From what I see in your comment calling it lame is not appreciative and if you look and see its that the majority of us fans on this website appreciate the game that is going to grace our console. Most fans are tired of sloppy ports that developers like ea who put little effort and just wanted it to run on the console or lie and give us a football game and just changed the number on it and say its the new one.

Look what happened when they put effort in game like rayman. It sold like hot cakes. Maybe that’s what nintendo fans want is for developers to put quality in the port(even though rayman is not a port) and gives the exact same game as other consoles without chopping the game up.
And maybe match the quality of nintendo’s heavy hitters and make the game first rate from the beginning and not have to fix it through updates. That’s one thing Nintendo is not in favor of but a lot of big developers like to do take make deadlines. Example would be skyrim with backwards flying dragons and the ps3 fiasco.

          • Yoshifan3

did i say anything about effort put into games? no. i agree rayman on the wii u is the best version and agree ubisoft was on crystal meth when they decided to make it mult platform.

now, i said it looked lame. i dont speak for the whole nintendo community, i just said in my opinion it looks like crap, and that im waiting for a real game. dont try to convince me otherwise. because i dont even want it. does that make sense to you?

          • Yoshifan3

they also dont like to pay full price for 3rd party games, but have no problems with paying full price or more for nintendo games. do you see the irony in that?

          • david jarman

We don’t want to pay full price if parts of the game is missing like multiplayer. Would you pay full price for a new car if the back bumper was missing but you could still drive it cause the meat of car is there?

          • Yoshifan3

does a wii u cost 10 to 20 grand? no so that doesnt really matter.

i agree that ea and warner bros. are on drugs when they gimp the wii u versions, but when they dont, it doesnt sell well. its because they dont see a profit in it. they tried that once with Need for Speed: Most Wanted, they put alot of effort into that game, but it sold like crap. NBA2k13 was really good on wii u, but it sold terrible hence why nba2k14 is skipping wii u. part of it is nintendo’s fault. they hardly advertised their new console, so people arent aware what the wii u is. they think its an extension of the wii.

people need to buy more consoles if you want to see more games, and ALOT more if we want KH3 and FFXV.

          • david jarman

Uhmm, I said all that about low install base in my last comment. You keep jumping around. Just about every port we got there was something missing. We shouldn’t have to pay the same amount other people on other consoles and recieve less. That’s just stupid. Nobody wants to buy third party because of that shit. If blackops 2 had dlc support you’d be seeing more people buy it. Same for need for speed. As for the low sales of all the imports. These were all old games that most have already played on other consoles. You think every nintendo fan has one console? Madden wasn’t even the same game as others. They gave us the old madden and slapped on a new number and expected us to be stupid. Batman has no multiplayer, splinter cell has no local co-op, we’re getting how to survive with no multiplayer. Sniper elite no multiplayer. Most of us are still going to buy these games for the single player experience, but its freaking messed up paying full price for 3/4 the content.
No, more people would be more supportive if we were getting the same game as everyone else.

          • Jon

actually, we complain when we have stuff removed from the games being released on more than just Nintendo and then are charged the same price when one system has full content and then Nintendo does. For example, 505 games has released 2 games on the Wii U where they have removed multiplayer from the game for the Wii U yet left it in for playstation and Xbox. Then they charged the same price on all three systems even though the Nintendo version was missing content.

Now, I see you didn’t like the analogy that David gave because the Wii U doesn’t cost that much so here is another one. Would you pay full price for a movie if you only got to watch half of it? Or better yet, the game world. Would you pay full price for a game if you only got half the game?

        • Jon

so my next question is. Define what a game is not and how this falls into that category.

I honestly wonder how stupid you are when you say we don’t like 3rd party games. Here is what us Nintendo fans like. We like games, Period. let it be 3rd party or not. We like games just as anyone else who plays games.

          • Yoshifan3

thanks for resorting to insults. it means i won this argument.

if you havent noticed, i have been very mature debating with another person,. even saying good things about the wii u and its flaws.

you also just edited your post lol. EXPOSED.

          • Jon

actually no, you are stupid because here you are assuming that us Nintendo fans don’t like 3rd party. That right there makes you stupid and makes you look like an ass. I wonder if it is people like you who make every think we only like 1st party games.

Second, you failed to answer the question on how this does not fit in as a game.

          • Yoshifan3

yes, i am stupid because i have a different opinion other than you.

since you keep insulting me, we are done here. it just shows your maturity level compared to other people. move along now, you angry person.

          • Jon

I called you stupid not because you have a different opinion, but because you made a stupid assumption. Why do you think so many people that own Nintendo systems have either the Xbox or Playstation? It’s because we like other games other than just Nintendo. What we cannot get from Nintendo, we get from other sources. Same for people who are fans of other systems that also want to play Nintendo games.

You talk about maturity when really, you threw the first blow saying we only care for Nintendo when that is not true at all. You started the argument, I responded.

Now, you still have yet to answer the second question I gave you.

          • Lil J Moore

*clap clap clap* Thank you my good man. Sure I love Nintendo but I’m a gamer and gamers play games. I buy other consoles for games I can’t play on one.

  • Merrfn

The more 3rd party support the better. Ubisoft is putting the Wii U on it’s back!

  • Adrian

WOW! Beautiful artwork, and it looks like it is a TURN BASED combat system (HELLS YEAH, so tired of action RPGs atm). I may actually buy this before a price drop. Looks great.

  • Brandon Betlej

where are all the 3D games? Isn’t anyone else sick of these side scrolling platformers? It cant just be me.

    • Adrian

I agree, I don’t plan to buy any side scrolling games, but the art on this one is pretty awesome, so I may get it at around a $20 price point.

    • Zuxs13

its a RPG and its an eShope game not a $60 game,

  • Christopher Acuna

They need to announce Valiant Hearts: The Great War. That game looks more interesting then this one IMO.

  • sd

I do like the look of this video. Many people of getting fed of platform games, particularly side scrolling. To me Nintendo has always been the console to own if you want to play the best platform games, so this just adds to the collection. It looks nice.

  • Veries Seals

I love it ! Words cant describe how much I am loving UBI Soft on Wii U! I watched the infamous Wii U hater, Francis enjoying and reviewing the Wii U version of Rayman Legends yesterday. He was blown away. I think this is the turn around for us Wii U owners in respect! Our console is king and I think Sony and Microsoft will have more of a fight on their hands than they think and Wii, pun intended, have a front row seat. Check out Francis have a ball on Rayman Legends for Wii U in super high def.

    • Yoshifan3

your post made me lol real hard. just because a 800 pound guy likes a game on wii u automatically means nintendo won the console war. please think realistically and actually wait for the new consoles to come out before you say wii u is king.

      • Veries Seals

I am glad you find it funny, but since you don’t know who that heavy set young man is, he is a very popular youtube game blogger. He has been anti-Wii U since it was released and you should not make fun of things and people that you have no knowledge of. #2 I enjoyed the fact that francis was finally enjoying the Wii U and I feel that other stiff minds in the industry will be changed, it was simply a joy to watch him enjoy it. # 3 who told you that I didn’t think Wii U was king anyway. If you have read any of my post you would know that. I already think Nintendo is king and thats that. I don’t have to wait for the other two console because i will buy them too just like I have owned every console since the early 80′s. Over 26 years of gaming experience kid. you are totally barking up the wrong tree. Try researching before you reply next time.

        • Yoshifan3

im not a kid im a fully grown adult. but i guess its easier to call people a kid even though you dont know them in real life.

whatever man, im tired of just trying to have a real debate among you people but you guys cant seem to grasp someone having a different opinion so i guess i will go away. feel better?

          • Veries Seals

So easy to offend but don’t like to be offended. I love a good debate and I do not wish you to leave. There are constructive ways to dabate. Don’t you think telling someone that you laughed at their opinion is a bit offensive? I apologize for offending you by calling you kid. I just know that I am an old school gamer. Even working on game development. But I am excited for the Xbox one and the PS4′s arivial as well but I truly think nintendo will do way better than people expect.

  • Aamir Islam

    Is this an exclusive?

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Nah, it’s coming to Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3 and PC as well.

  • Aleks

Did someone say RPG? I’m in.

  • Yoshifan3

i love how im getting so many downvotes because i have an actual opinion. anything bad against nintendo on this site is considered trolling or that i should be banned. seriously, fanboys are the freaking WORST, and almost everyone except a few here are fanboys.

    • Jon

post’s like these usually give more, people tend not to like spam or whining posts.

  • IcyCatt

This looks really cool! I’ll check it out when it comes out!

  • Joyous Killer

Those first two Piano notes are the same as the opening from Other M. That opening is amazing. Gives me goosebumps every time.

  • companyoflosers

glad to see ubisoft still giving nintendo its chance. its support of wii u was put in jeapordy after the sales of games like zombiU and the rayman fiasco but im happy to see they still want to make games for it because after all, the key to bringing nintendo back into the limelight will be a combination of good third and first party titles. nintedo has the first party stuff taken care of, ubisoft will show other third parties whats what.

  • wober2

Looks amazing! I cannot wait! Love that watercolor and pen/ink wash style. It charms the hell out of my inner child.

  • Lil J Moore

More RPG’s on WiiU the better

  • http://MacroManJr.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

Interesting visual style. Very different from Ubisoft’s usual stuff. This has a very small-team “indie” artistic feeling to it and looks like it might take an interesting risk in terms of an experimental style of gameplay. I hope it’s good! Let’s hope more games will see their way on Wii U. I have to hand it to Ubisoft for sticking it out with supporting Wii U thus far.

  • DeedsGaming .

    Looks interesting

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Ubisoft making a platform/rpg, interesting. Seeing the trailer it has my interest :)
