Mighty No. 9 offers first look at game engine [VIDEO]

Mighty No. 9 has been making waves in the gaming community as it’s Keiji Inafune’s attempt to bring back Mega Man gameplay after Capcom cancelled his last project. The Kickstarter is still ongoing and in an attempt to gather more funds in its final few days, Comcept have released a short 13-second video that gives a rough look at how the game will play.

Of course it should be re-iterated that this is very alpha footage and the artwork is not finalized. The game is scheduled to launch in 2015, with a Wii U launch included. The project currently has $3 million in funding with under 48 hours to go, with the last update mentioning that Mega Man 2 composer Takashi Tateishi is on board to produce the music.

    I saw this earlier this morning – very rough, but you can tell they are really going for that Megaman vibe (which is amazing).

    Oh, and they are totally getting sued at some point…haha

      How’s the creator of Megaman getting sued for using his own intellectual property for his own project? Does not compute…

        Because the intellectual property belongs to Capcom…they own the rights to the franchise. While Inafune is indeed the creator of the series, the actual franchise still belongs to Capcom.

        Inafune left Capcom in part due to Capcom’s treatment of his beloved franchise. He knew people wanted another Megaman like game, so he started his own company to give the people what they want.

          What’s to say that Capcom only has the publishing rights and Inafune took his IP with him?

            I guess I don’t know that for sure, but the fact that he is branding this as Mighty No. 9 rather than a new installment of Megaman (many mechanics appear very similar to the old franchise) makes me believe that Capcom still retains the rights.

            They may appear similar, but Capcom doesn’t own the rights to anything that looks remotely similar. If that were true, then I suppose Activision can sue EA for using mechanics in Battlefield that are similar in Call of Duty.

          But is he really using their property?

          It’s not that he’s doing anything, that’s 100% like that in any Megaman game except for the way MightyNr.9 moves. And I doubt any company has rights on moves unless it’s something really special, that’s a trademark for just that one character (maybe something like Cpt Falcon’s Falcon Punch or Link’s (charged) whirl attack).

          He’s really just trying to catch the feeling of the old-school Megaman games, so I can’t imagine, that Capcom will sue him. And IF they do, I doubt they’ll win, because there’s really nothing atm that screams “rip-off”

            You’re probably right. I’m no lawyer, so I don’t know what they can and can’t protect. But I’ve seen people sue because they didn’t have the foresight to let their coffee cool before enjoying their first sip…if someone can sue for that, who knows what people can do!

            well Apple sued a small german cafe, because their logo (wich existed for more than 100 years already..) was a Kid…that eats an apple. So I understand your Point of some People being butthurt enough to sue the most stupid reasons.

            But I’d rather like to think of everyone except Apple and EA to be intelligent enough not to do this :D

        Its not his IP. Anything you do at a company belongs to the company, unfortunately.

          Not true. Only if there is no contract involved. If not, then yes, any IP belongs to the company you were employed at.

            Actually that is not completely true. Anything created on company time using company technology and property while working for the company becomes their property even side projects unless approved by an ethics officer and it’s not a conflict of interest.

            I just took a seminar in business ethics and anti-trust laws for my company and this subject was covered.

            That is if that game was built with their tech, that’s not always the case with every game. Plus, if the contract states that the creator is sole owner of the IP, then even if they did use their tech, it doesn’t matter. Deal is a deal one way or another.

            As for side projects, that’s only if it was done within the company. I don’t think side projects that you created on your own without the help of your employer counts.

            The contract has to deal with a person being an employee under that company and until that employment is terminated then any ip or talent from employee using his talents will belong to the company. That is why a lot of developers have to leave and wait for a year to make their own games because of these binding contract. When you work for these types of company they own you and your talent and anything you create while employed by them.

            He has permission to make this game.

            He left the company in 2010. I don’t think he needs their permission for this. You still missed my point about contracts. If that employee has a contract that states that he owns his IP, then I don’t see how they own it, but I digress.

            Also, it depends on what the laws are in each country. In the United States, from what I read, for an example, if a company hires you to write code for for a specific software, they own the copyright for the codes they wrote for you. You jus have rights to use it.

            However, the code belongs and is copyrighted by the creator. Only way that can be overridden, is if they were under an agreement, which you are right, under employment, but that’s not always the case as it depends if there was a contract involved during employment.

            Like I said, it really depends on what country you’re from, so copyrights vary.

            They don’t make contracts that way. No technology company does. This is pretty much how the business works. Do you not work for a company? I just advised you how the contracts usually are.

            I doubt you work for every company out there to know how they do things. You’re going by what you were taught, and how the company you work for. That’s not always the case with every company, you go by the norm of business, that’s fine. However, not all businesses work that way.

            I’m not questioning your knowledge or anything, but for you to know how all businesses work, you’d actually had to of worked for them.

            No, I don’t work for a company, but my uncle does work for a small company down in PR that deals with security systems. Funny enough, an employee of his actually does have a contract which allows him to keep his intellectual property should he leave the company.

            While it’s not a general business practice, there are cases. That was my point. However, you’re entitled to believe what you like if you wish. I’m not gonna go any further into this matter. I made my point and you made yours. Moving on.

            B. That would be a conflict of interest for him to leave and let another company be able to use the same ip especially in the security business but whatever.

            I was just stating what a typical contract was for most BiG companies.

            I’m not talking about him working for Capcom. I’m talking about the mechanics in his new game. They have no rights to that, despite it looking similar.

          Agreed, for example, if you work for big phrama and you develop a cure for cancer, you can not take it with you if you leave the company because you “found it/created it/designed it/rendered it, etc”, the people who it belongs to are the ones who gave you the money and made it all happen. The IP belongs to CAPCOM.

      I really don’t think they will, not very likely at least.

      Various people at Capcom have already congratulated Inafune and his team on the succesful Kickstarter and want to see him succeed.

      It would be insanely bad PR for Capcom if they try to shut down the project and Capcom likely won’t take the risk.

      They could totally do it, they could win too (the evidence explaining the similarities is very convincing), but it would be better for Capcom if they don’t sue.

    This is the logical progression style-wise for all my favorite old platformers. Even in this alpha, you can tell the attention to character movement and response to control commands. Too many modern platformers focus on being overly complex and exaggerate movement (become floaty). This looks like it will just feel like playing a Megan Game back in the day. Well done. Will definitely pick this up.

        Still not Mega Man, could it end up being a very good game, yes it can, maybe get 8 & 9’s for review. But it will never be Mega Man, a clone is a clone no matter what you call it, or no matter how good it is.

      why not? Capcom Killed 2-3 megaman games (I wanted so bad for MML3 and they gave us Suuporting Fans and the creator the middle finger and blame us for “not Enough Support”) is it really that bad? :/
