Rayman Legends Review

RL_Ocean_World

If you buy one game this year, make sure it’s Rayman Legends. The rest of this review is here to convince you why that statement is true, but believe me when I say it’s more than a little redundant. Despite the six month delay for the title to become a multi-platform release, Michel Ancel and his team at Ubisoft Montpellier have created a one of a kind experience that deserves to be played.

Overview

Rayman Legends is like a bigger, grander Rayman Origins. Everything that made the 2011 title a stellar experience is back with more polish, more levels, the same amazing artwork aesthetic, and challenges that’ll have you pulling your hair out. Just about everything from the original Origins release has been improved and polished to the point that fans of the first game will be overjoyed, while newcomers to the series will find a polished experience not unlike what Nintendo usually provides.

rayman_legends_13747898331722

The basic premise for the game sees Rayman and pals setting out to rescue Teensies who are being kidnapped and stored throughout the levels. You’ll need to use a variety of moves, with some utilizing the Wii U GamePad in ways that I haven’t seen in an original title since last year’s ZombiU. It seems Ubisoft Montpellier understands how to utilize the GamePad’s unique second screen feature more than any other developer out there, as swiping platforms and smacking baddies feels nothing but natural.

Gameplay

Rayman Legends is at its heart, a fast-paced 2D platformer that requires precise movement. This is something that relies on controls more than anything to get right, and the team at Ubisoft Montpellier have done a bang up job making sure the game feels responsive and that every action you perform responds immediately to button presses. The last game I played that felt this responsive was Team Meat’s Super Meat Boy.

The gameplay itself is designed to be challenging but rewarding, as there are numerous ways to traverse the levels and if you want 100% completion for all the stages in the game, you’ll need to replay them while exploring every nook and cranny, avoiding devious traps, and learning each unique mechanic that makes the boss fights in the game a joy to play. On top of that, the levels designed with touch control in mind are such a pleasure to play that Rayman Legends is an exemplary example of what could happen with the Wii U’s touch screen. The shocking thing is that it’s not a Nintendo title to display that potential.

rayman-legends-4

Touch-screen levels have you controlling the action in a more indirect manner, as you must swipe platforms, rotate the GamePad in order to create paths, and blast enemies with your fingers so the character you’re guiding can progress. I didn’t experience any problems with the AI controlling the character aside from one or two bungled jumps that led to the death of the character, but given the fact the game was so responsive to my touch screen inputs I was more than willing to forgive these few errors on the AI’s part. After all, who hasn’t missed a platform jump now and again?

If you have friends over you can avoid the issue entirely, as the game supports up to 5 players in co-op that quickly becomes just as hectic as what you’ve probably experienced in New Super Mario Bros. U. Drop in and drop out co-op make adding additional players a breeze, so if you happen to be jamming to the game and friends stop by you can get them in the game without having to back out and create games specifically for them to join in.

Graphics & Audio

Rayman Legends is simply a treat to experience in both audio and visual aspects, but special levels in the game require the player to tune their movements to the music and rhythm of the song. This might sound groan-worthy in theory, but in practice it’s much more fun than can be described. The music is outstanding, the levels feel right and if you’re not shaking in your seat by the end of the level, you’re doing it wrong. These rhythm-based levels were one of the major highlights of the game for me, as it’s one of the few instances in gaming today where music is so solidly incorporated into level design.

The general aesthetic of the game follows that setup in Origins, though each level hub you encounter is loosely based around a concept, such as a fairy tale or urban legend. The levels felt distinct enough that I never felt as though I was revisiting the same place over and over and while the challenge modes reuse some of the art assets from the main single player game, some of that is to be expected given the circumstances.

Multiplayer

I touched on the multiplayer aspect of Rayman Legends a bit in the gameplay section because it’s nearly impossible to separate the multiplayer aspects of the game from the single player. That’s certainly not a bad thing, as challenge mode will have you going head to head against your friends on Miiverse to see who is better at specific challenges.

Speaking of Miiverse integration for this game, it is one of the better experiences I’ve seen on Wii U. Some games like Resident Evil: Revelations contained token Miiverse support that was interesting, but Rayman Legends actually involves the community and your friends to the point where you’ll find yourself replaying challenges and levels in order to try to best yourself and your friends. This is the kind of competitive experience I like to see games inspire, as it brings out the best in everyone.

rayman-legends-5

Couch co-op is just as viable as playing through the challenge modes as well, so don’t hesitate to get your friends involved. In my home the Wii U has become something of the party machine. When friends come over everyone is curious about it and they want to play it, so I’m happy to say that Rayman Legends passes that “non-gamer friend” challenge. This is a game you can add to your collection to show off how great it is when friends point at your console under your TV and exclaim, “Hey isn’t that a Wii U?”

Conclusion

Rayman Legends is a must play title for any Wii U owner. From my understanding the experience is a great one on any console, but some of the more interactive sections have been replaced with button prompts on other consoles. I can’t imagine not being able to control the touch-screen portions with 1:1 movement and instead relying on button presses. The game may have been delayed for launch on other consoles, but at its core Rayman Legends was always a Wii U title and it shows in execution. This game deserves to be played by every Wii U owner, because it was crafted specifically with you in mind.

Pros

+ Excellent level design
+ Revisit some of the original Origins levels
+ Challenges are nice and varied
+ Amazing Miiverse integration
+ Rhythm levels are some of the best levels in the game

Cons

None, I can’t think of a single one. Go buy this game.

Score: 10/10

I agree on all except there not being any negatives. My ONLY complaint with the game was that the AI players that run while you control murphy weren’t always the brightest. Still a 9.5 in my book!

ALSO you still never accepted my friend request so we could compare scores in the challenges ;)

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

I mentioned that in the review, but it’s hard to find fault with when everything about the level that you do control is executed spot on. You don’t even find that level of control on mobile titles designed for pure touch input and they have capacitive screens.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

right, I saw it mentioned, I just thought it should be listed as a negative :P

You are right about the level of control though. I suppose usually when they screw up its my own damn fault, but sometimes… DX

        • Duo

I definitely don’t think that it should be a negative negative because to be fair the Murphy levels are designed for two player so get a second player and there all kinds of fun

      • Wayne Beck

Honestly, I’ve always found capacities screens to be far to over sensitive for games. The screen on the Wii U allows for very precise controls with a significantly smaller chance of hitting something you didn’t mean to.

    • Wayne Beck

Really? I found their AI to be perfect for what they are supposed to be. I think if they were any smarter than they currently are, those levels would be less like puzzles and more like mindless gimmicks.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

        i suppose :P

  • Mario

Why don’t I have any money!!!!?????

  • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t know about a 10/10, but since I haven’t bought the game just yet I’ll take your word for it. I’ve only heard good things about it anyway. Nice and informative review.

    • Baum 「ツリー」

Yeah didn’t Play it either, but everyone I asked/everyone who made a Video about it/EVERYONE said it’s really good and fun to Play – especially with some freinds – and that it Looks gorgeous.
I did Play the demo though and even just those 3 Levels were extremely fun and I put almost as much time into Rayman Legends’ demo as in MH3U’s (and I played that shit EVERY day while waiting for the release).

UbiArt (I think that’s the Name für their new engine) is just amazingly good and I LOVE how the games, that are built with it, look!

    • Wayne Beck

It’s a 10/10. It really is. Everything about this game is awesome. The PS3 and 360 versions are probably 9.5s just because the touch screen content isn’t as good in those. Play Castle Rock, the last level of the first world, once and you will be in love with this game.

      • Διονύς84

The Ps3/XB versions seem to have a better 4 player mode though. They don’t force you to play as Murphy

        • jay

but but… what if i wanna play as murphy :'(

          • Fred

So do my wife and kids they all want to be murphy I’m the only one that doesn’t want to be murphy

          • Stuart Thomas

I love it when the kids play as murphy and we are all yelling uncontrollably at them to move the platform(s). I hate being murphy it drives me mad.

        • Fred

You’re only forced to be murphy if you do 5 player so unless 5 player is an option on PS360 this is not an issue

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

neither does the Wii U version…

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Yeah, played the demo via Steam. Had me amused. I’ll most likely get it around the holidays.

      • Stuart Thomas

I bought a bunch of games recently, including Rayman Legends and W101. Rayman was an instant hit with all the kids and ME. One of my nethews was asking about origins and wanting to play it for familiaritys sake, then all of a sudden blam we hads unlocked a few levels in Legends and his face lit up. I was amazed with all the unlockable content and addictive nature of the game, its absolutely one of my fav games so far.Now W101 is beautiful but the controls are mind boggling and confusing, after an hour of playing it was like bam this game clicked. The bosses are immense and huge and the graphics are shiny, crisp and the game is funner than i had ever imagined. 30 save slots allows all the kids to have their own saves and not erase one so they can have their own, and the story is actually good! I get sucked in, i enjoy the comic parts that make me laugh, the only real set back in this game is wanting to go to bed and your half-way through a mission, the missions seem LONG and i dont want to lose my progress, maybe theres a way to do it but, who knows?!?! So far so good! +1 for Nintendo and Ubi and Platinum

    • Andreas Sunde

It’s the closest I can think of to a perfect game. 999/1000.

  • AAAkabob

I agree with Zorpix and this review. Even if you don’t have a friend to do the murphy challenges it’s still in the top 5 games for the Wii U and a must buy.

  • Jack5221

I just got this game not too long ago, along with Pikmin 3, Super Luigi U, and W101. Rayman is lots of fun, very challenging, addicting, and just overall good. My friend bought it on his PS3, I tried out both versions, and I have to say the Wii U version is SOOO much better because of what you can do with the game pad. Wii U daily gives it a 10, IGN gives it a 9.5, GO BUY THIS GAME!!! You will not be not be disappointed.

EDIT: Also, there are TONS of unlockables, you wont get bored of this game, you’ll be enjoying it for a very long time. :)

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

Totally! I didn’t even mention the scratch cards. I really enjoyed those. :3

      • Fred

You also didn’t mention Kung Foot

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

do you know if there’s like, a set number of them you can get, and you just unlock all the rewards in a random order, or is it possible to miss out on some? I get the feeling there’s some big card database with all the possible combinations and it just gives them in a random order

  • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

Too easy, but the musics are so faking EPIC. (A little yay for the French’s little Rayman <3)

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

play granny’s 8 bit world tour and tell me that game is easy

      • Marcus Navarro

Compared to OCD+ and Super Meat Boy, yeah.

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

eh. but those games are made specifically to be hard

  • SkullScience

Hmm, I usually don’t like 10/10 games. Especially for sequels. To be fair Rayman Origins was a real phoenix from the flames moment for the franchise and a genre. No-one saw it coming and, in my opinion, is simply the greatest platformer ever made, although that is a naturally subjective statement. This game improves on every aspect of Origins whilst retaining the same atmosphere through its unique audio and visual style. I am in the UK so can say I have been playing it for a couple of weeks now. So much love, thought and craft went into both this and Origins that it is, at the very least a 9.5 out of 10. Oh, and after playing on a friends PS3 version, can honestly say that the Wii U version is definitely the version to be played, simply tapping the button is no alternative to the Wii U screen. But great game whatever version.

    • Marcus Navarro

“…although that is a naturally subjective statement.” It damn well better be! The wrath of Sonic would tear you a new one, bud!

  • Jon

A Con is to ” Go buy this game”… Lol, naw, I know it’s not, I just though that line was kind of funny :P

I will buy it when I get some cash though, few games to get first though like W101, Zelda, AC4, and DKTF.:)

    • Διονύς84

True. I’d probably even buy Sonic Lost World before this

  • Sdudyoy

I haven’t played this one yet, but Rayman origins is one of my favorite games but the Multiplayer is it’s strong point.

  • Assassinated23

I love this game, and downloaded it day one, but my hard drive crashed, and now I get an error every time I try to re-instal it. I lost all my data for it too, and I’d gotten about half way through, %100 every level. Plus like 500 challenges, including the free challenge mode demo. It totally sucks.

  • Zuxs13

Great review Ashley. I rarely agree with 10’s for a game but this game sure has felt like one of the closest to a 10 this year that is for sure.

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

Indeed. After what went on with the Disney Infinity review I was expecting a lot of people to give me flak for the 10, but it is highly deserved.

  • BIG Franky

i picked this up on release day (it was a pre-order)… sadly its stashed away until Christmas for the kiddies….. along with Disney Infinity and Lego City Undercover…. and Sonic Lost World when I pick up my pre-order of that one! I’ll also be picking up Pikmin 3 and Angry Birds for presents for the kids as well….Gonna be a fun Christmas!!
In fact, I’m actually considering cancelling my PS4 pre-order….. to be honest, the Wii U has so many games I’m interested in over the next few months I just don’t know when I’ll have the time to play all of them, let alone my PS4…… (I haven’t touched my PS3 since maybe February, LOL)….who knows, we’ll see…

    • Fred

If you cancel the PS4 you’ll have more time and money to play Wii U games!

    • John Andalora

Up to you. I’m not trying to plug it to you, but there are more games I personally am interested in coming for PS4 than Wii U games.

      • Clel

Thanks for the clarification “I personally”, wouldn’t have known otherwise.

      • BIG Franky

you really think so? I’d love your input…. like which games are you thinking of?

        • jrob23

yeah, please let us know of these must have games at launch

          • John Andalora

Well they aren’t all games I’m excited for at launch. For Launch, Knack, Killzone and Infamous are some choices I’m looking into. I’m waiting for PS4 to get Madden 25, and in the launch window it’s a lot more indies, like Flower (haven’t played it yet, I know it’s on another PS console), Octodad, War Thunder, WarFrame, The Witness, and PlanetSide 2.

        • John Andalora

Well, for exclusives I like Knack, Killzone and Infamous look interesting enough (and I’m waiting for NFL 25 until PS4). I’m also a sucker for indies, and since I’ve never played Flower or Octodad, there’s those as well. For ones not coming to Wii U but are multiplatform, The Witness, The Evil Within, Thief, Dying Light, War Thunder, and Destiny are the games that entice me right now. Although my first game for it is going to be Watch Dogs (for the 60 minute bonus gameplay), There’s a lot I’m looking further into.

I think the Wii U is an interesting console, but it hasn’t really had too many games that appeal to me. I liked Rayman Legends, and ZombiU and NintendoLand were fun, but just not much outside of that.

          • BIG Franky

Knack definitely looks amazing. Warframe as well…. Destiny looks great but i dont think that is being released until mid-to late 2014 from what I’m reading. Killzone and BF4 dont interest me at all (not a 1st person shooter guy)…. i dunno, i’ll defintiel yend up getting one (a PS4), i just think I’ll be able to wait…especially with some of the Wii U games coming i nthe first half of 2014 (SSB, MK8, Bayonetta)…. i’m interested in all of those titles. and as cool as Knack and Warzone look….they definitely dont strike me as MUST HAVE on release day titles… if anything i’d prefer to buy them when price to PS4 goes down…. i dunno, we’ll see… i didnt cancel it yet. just thinking about it.

          • Marcus Navarro

If you’re tight on cash that you’re willing to part with for video games, by ALL means cancel the preorder. If you can afford an extra $540+ on another console, I’d say go for it. It looks like it’s worth the money. I, too, feel as if the Wii U is much more appealing at the time. I’m not gonna speak for you, but, in your shoes, I would cancel the preorder and wait-and-see.

          • Mark

Knack looks like an interesting, but the excitement for games like Super Mario 3D Land, Sonic Lost World (oh, how much I WANT THIS GAME!), AND DKC: Tropical Freeze really kills anything Knack has going for me.

    • Yousif Alromaithi

Man, why have you not touched your PS3. Dude have you forgotten GTA 5. Anyways I agree it is good to cancel the PS4 since I thought about it. Seriously I thinking about canceling mostly every day since August. But I am saying that why don’t you start playing your PS3 because still it is a great console. You know why I am seriously mad that I pre ordered a PS4. Because I have many games at home and some games I never finished. Those include Dead Space 3, Rayman Legends, SMT 4 3DS, Most Wanted PS3 and games that I pre ordered on other systems like Vita or so. I am stupid , since I am also thinking about canceling my PS4 I mean why did I pre ordered it. I am student on my third year with no time to play those games and also next year Dark Souls 2 is coming. So god knows when I can finish all the games I went before jumping on Next Gen. Same thing happened to me on PS2 and PS3. While I had the Wii I did not play the PS3 much until MGS4 came out. Truth is even though I bought Uncharted at release I finished it on 2008. So seriously you are probably right about canceling. Instead of picking the PS4 just play your PS3. Worth keeping it with you for now. Also if you like your old games probably Sony will make something similar to the PS Vita downloading games from UMD on your PSP before upgrading to new console and this might be available to PS4 sometime around 2014. Japan can download games from PSP by paying a small amount of money to tie it your PSN account and play it on the Vita. Since PS4 has Gaiki I believe it could be possible that Sony is trying to do something similar if the PS4 was successful. Will let us hope and wait.

      • DragonSilths

GTA 5 isnt amazing like everyone thinks. Its not bad. But not like OMG AMAZING!!! I give it a 6.5/10.

        • Nintedward

That’s BS. GTAV is a benchmark in gaming history. All I can find wrong with it is minor flaws that are dwarfed by everything it does spectacularly right. 10/10 for me. It’s by no means my personal favourite game, I an easily think of 10+ games that I prefer more. That being said, it’s the best sandbox game ever made by miles and miles.
If GTA IV was this gens GTA 3 , GTAV is this gens San andreas. Complete return to form and the best GTA ever made and one of the best games ever made.

I could right a huge list of minor flaws I find in GTAV, but I can write a list 10 times bigger of positives. Nuff said.

          • Marcus Navarro

I believed I set my expectations too high in the wrong places. I expected the story to blow the other ones out of the water. So far, it’s been quite predictable and hasn’t felt like the same journey as San Andreas. San Andreas’ story was so different and completely out in left field that I honestly didn’t expect half of the shit i that would occur. I especially dislike Michael’s story. Shit’s like a sitcom. Other than that, everything’s perfect. 94/100 for me.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

The story was awesome. The Music itself in the beginning I mean what a bomb. It is been 4 months I played PS3. I mean wow. How the hell Rock Star made this game. Although San Andreas had some good stuffs. But this game was more modern and less gangster meaning this games balances the formula from the past games. Although I agree it had issues. Some say it is hard to control the car while driving but this game reminds me of Forza which was on Xbox. GTA contains the same game play mechanics as a real driving simulator game that is similar to Gran Turismo for PS3. Although I played for my bro console and was awesome but I heard from Rock Star that GTA 5 has a new mechanical game play while driving cars. The truth is it looks more reality than the past games. For example if you drive 120 km per hour and you took a left turn on the road during the intersection lane you car off course will drift. Similar to what Forza does because you need to press brake or other wise you will bump your car.

          • Marcus Navarro

“GTA contains the same game play mechanics as a real driving simulator game that is similar to Gran Turismo for PS3.” No the hell it doesn’t. I can list 15 things it’s missing off of the top of my head that it doesn’t have if you want me to. Driving in GTA5 DOES NOT simulate real driving, nor does it have the same mechanics as a driving sim. Not that I’d want it to. GTA shouldn’t be too realistic, but there’s some things that I’d like to make sense. GTA5’s driving mechanics are more complex(to say the least) than San Andreas, but is nearly the same as GTA4. No disrespect, but you must’ve been complete ass at Gran Turismo and the Forza games that weren’t Horizon.

I can say that it does emulate civilian driving kind of alright. It feels like the assisted-driving devices are on in the cars. But in cars that you wanna race in, that’s where the illusion is broken.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Well I do not know what wrong with driving simulation. But I finished many games on driving sim those include. Forza, Project Gotham, Gran Turismo and Wipe Out despite all this the driving is a bad ass. But I agree the driving is complex for many. Until today i mastered it. Well truly that is due for not playing the PS3 a long time. I am on my Six mission. Still the game is awesome. If you wanna know the truth type in google http://www.psu.com/a020866/GTA-V-has-new-driving-and-shooting-mechanics-says-Rockstar. I think they are right I was on a mission and this is a spoiler i had a hard time shooting. This game remind me of call of duty while shooting during drive. I tried to shoot to thugs while trying to get my boat back and save mike son. That was a hard part once completed today i improved and started to drive more perfectly and escaped a three star during the cop chase. What I am saying the more you play the better you become.

          • Marcus Navarro

I’m not saying that GTA5 not having realistic driving elements is a bad thing. I’m just saying that it doesn’t have said elements.

About that article: it only says that there’s more responsiveness and control over the vehicle, which is actually a good thing. Does that make the driving more realistic? Nope. Different vehicles, depending on their configurations, have varying degrees of control and response which heavily depends on the tires and the steering configuration(there are many different mechanisms to emulate rack-and-pinton steering).

Look, my bad for spewing the car facts at you, but I’m kind of a gearhead. But to say that the driving in GTA5 is realistic is quite facetious. Half of the things that you can do in GTA5 would leave your vehicle doing cartwheels or worse. Not that I’d want it to. The driving’s fun regardless.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

I know what you are trying to say. I am not a profession on driving I know things or two about especially physics since I am an engineer and still that is not difficult to master. Car varies differently for example the Porsche car has a better handle than a Ferrari car. Back on you tube I saw a video between two profession car racers it was like on 2007 or so. Both the Porsche and Ferrari raced while the Porsche won. The problem is due to the fact that Porsche had a better control mechanism since it is more heavier but lighter in controlling transmission and a better suspension than a Ferrari car. The Ferrari is more faster that is off course and more expensive but that does not mean the tire is most important part of the control mechanism. Because the fact is the car control system cause the problem while on speed. Now on heavy speed the suspension mechanisms alters the car while driving on heavy speed and each car has a different suspension. Bugatti is fast but bad suspension so this is in turn Rockstar created a real world in the eyes of the gamer. Stock Markets exists other men sleep with other people wives. Hollywood stars do drugs this is in turn makes the game becomes more a reality than sandbox game.

          • Marcus Navarro

Erm…just to clear that up, the Bugatti Veyron doesn’t have “bad” suspension. It just lacks a big turning radius and it’s quite heavy. Its suspension is tuned for traction and control, not responsiveness. But, I digress.

At least we understand each other. But since you brought it up…

Idk which Porsche and Ferrari models you’re talking about, so I’ll assume they’re quite recent, so Porsche 9/11 GT3. I have the perfect car to follow up upon that: the Nissan GTR R37. It’s the world’s fastest production car and, despite its heaviness, one of the greatest handling. It’s like a race car on discount(if discount means slightly under US$100k lol). In its stock configuration(with the governor installed), it goes through Nurburgring in 7min11s. The 7min barrier separates high-performance cars from everything else, so for a factory car to come close to it is quite impressive. I believe it crushes the 7min barrier with the governor removed. And don’t get me started on the Nissan GTR R37 R-Spec. My goodness… That leaves over 1/2 of Porsches in the smoke before slicks are put onto it… Again, I digress.

Now, since you brought up the “reality factor” of GTA5, lemme say this: it’s one of the most immersive sandbox games ever created. Are the scenarios realistic? Nope. Are there plotholes that wouldn’t exist in real life? Quite a few. Are there plenty of realistic elements as well as mostly everything making sense? Absolutely. Does that make the game more realistic or more immersive. Immersive.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

I was talking about the contraction about Bugatti suspension and transmission. Also about the Porsche i am talking about those cars agreed. Bugatti is heavy which alters everything. Porsche was heavy not much but the transmission can handle it heaviness. The momentum of Bugatti is suffering form a large strain gauge reduction. This is in turn does not bed well for Bugatti about the radius you get it right the resistance of the car outweighs it power even though it has a large horse power which make it hard to control the car while steering the wheel and that is physics GTA maintains the main function of that. I think I agree about saying the game was not realistic but still it showed the best part of modern games. All games are fantasy no games shows us a reality based game. That is the truth. But GTA maintains the best part of modern world not just in other games, also Red Dead 3 would be epic much like GTA 5. Making business on stocks that is something awesome. Second Mission of frank and Micheal while saving Mike son was insane. All are cool and true while driving and shooting was hard. I never did that on any game and that is why the game is epic.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

GTA 5 hands down best game 2013. Worth it for keeping your PS3 no way as hell I am selling mine and it is even better the PS4 if I pick my pre order at November 15. The PS3 is better investment for people who had Xbox and wants to try Sony exclusives.

          • Marcus Navarro

            Pokemon X/Y for meeeee!!!

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Me too. I love Pokemon. I have my 3DS which I lost mine on March and I bought the animal crossing 3DS bundle which was cool but still GTA 5 does not suck even if you like Pokemon.

          • Marcus Navarro

Whoa! Ease up on the gas there, son. Who said anything about GTA5 SUCKING? It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s a quality game nevertheless.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

That’s what I am talking about I don’t think it is perfect but for me it is near perfect. I say it could be a ten out of ten for many.

          • andré

cant wait to play GTAV, iam waiting for the ps4 version..

          • http://petercoff.in/ Peter Coffin

The problem is that GTA IV isn’t this gens GTA3. In fact, this gen hasn’t had anything even close to the revelation that was GTA3, and I doubt the next one will.

In my opinion, the next big revelation is the mainstream acceptance of stylized graphics that require less detail (in many cases literally being pixel art) alongside the endless attempts to get past the uncanny valley.

          • Nintedward

Agreed. The comparison is really from a content point of view. GTA 3 and IV were linear , whilst SA and V give you all the freedom you could want.

          • http://petercoff.in/ Peter Coffin

That’s definitely true, in that way I see what you mean.

        • Yousif Alromaithi

I think you are mistaking boy go have fun on whatever you play.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          What were you smoking?

        • Elitepwnsface

I would up it to a 8/10 at least. It actually has content unlike your typical over hyped franchises like your cods/battlefields. I can actually get 100+ hours out of this game

      • Marcus Navarro

To be fair, Dead Space 3 isn’t worth completing.

        • Yousif Alromaithi

That’s what everybody says. Still I have the game and did not play it yet. Man I look stupid since I am picking PS4 and still have not played my pre order copy for Dead Space 3.

          • Marcus Navarro

Well, if you already have the game, you might as well. It’s not much of a survival/horror game, so prepare to be severely disappointed if you played the 1st 2 games. Its cover-based shooter mechanics are mediocre, so it doesn’t match up well to other CBS games like Mass Effect 3 or Gears of War. Overall: a mediocre game. 48/100

          • Yousif Alromaithi

That’s what I heard. Capcom is now in bad shape. The only thing Capcom now has is Street Fighter, Dragon Dogma, Dead Rising, Ace Attorney and Monster Hunter. Still Capcom fans are really pissed at their decisions. I see it is more Capcom fault because their decisions is stupid.

          • Marcus Navarro

Capcom’s problem is that they’re sitting on a TON of IPs and don’t do anything with them. Instead, they’re banking on DLC and rehashes. You’d be surprised that everything you’ve mentioned is the tip of the iceberg.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

I know I agree with what you said but Capcom went crazy since 2011. I do not know what happened either they have bad CEO or the investors is forcing the company to do bad decisions. I have no idea what Capcom is trying to do but despite that they are really desperate even though they are making money.

          • Mark

Monster Hunter is really the only franchise that is truly profitable for Capcom as of now. Did you see the sales numbers for MH4? Thy’re insane; over 1.6 million in just a few days (maybe a week) and this isn’t even counting digital sales!

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Resident Evil 6 sold 4 million copies. That makes another profitable game.

          • Mark

Capcom actually viewed this game as failure because it did not reach sales projections, which was supposed to be 7 million.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

It’s a failure to them cause it didn’t make it, yes. However, it was still profitable despite that. Capcom just didn’t get the profit they were looking for.

          • Mark

Yeah, and that very well might be one of the reasons why they are struggling right now.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Right it is I did not say not profitable but Capcom disliked it sales and I do not know why.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Probably cause 5’s sales were higher and expected it to be on par or go over. That was wishful thinking on their end and it backfired on them.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

True still Capcom had a bad reputation which this had hurt their sales on the west and a bit on the east.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Monster Hunter is like GTA but for Japan we knew this. Although more people own PS3 and Xbox it is amaizng if they expand the universe and made it better.

          • Mark

A western release is not far from the truth, so lets just hope Capcom makes the decision to bring it over.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

It will happen Capcom knows what consumers want but they are having a bad reputation now so it takes time.

      • BIG Franky

loved the Last of Us….. not a super high interest in GTA5…. at least not to the point where i have to run out and get it…
i’m definitely not sellign my PS3…. i love it. just havent been too into it recently.

        • Marcus Navarro

I don’t understand how people love The Last of Us so much. It was an excellent movie to play, but not that much of a game. Still pretty good story. 84/100

          • Yousif Alromaithi

I agree it had it is flaws not to mention bad AI. It’s problem is worse than GTA 5. Because it is done by Naughty Dog it got many perfect scores. What I am trying to say some games like wonderful 101 deserved higher scores even though the game was fun. This is in turn the critics biased.

          • Blugrave

I agree I’m loving the Wonderful 101 right now. Seriously GTAV 10/10?! It’s got some new features but come on.

          • Magnus Eriksson

How is that compared to ZombiU in your opinion?

          • Marcus Navarro

Completely blows ZombiU out of the damn water. To be fair though, most games I’ve played give ZombiU the depth charge. Fuck that game… 55/100

      • andré

nooo, dont cancel you ps4 pre-order. forget about the ps3, i have it and the graphics sucks. i want to se pc standard graphics on console.
1080p as standard on every game. gta v are coming to ps4, diablo 3, assasins creed iv…… and many more, so every game that is on its way to ps3, are also coming to ps4, but much better graphics. so why buy the same games to ps3, when you can get them on ps4?

        • Mark

Because it’s cheaper to buy games on a system you already have than buy another system for virtually the same game. To be fair, if you want the best version of the game, go buy a PS4, but not everyone has the money to spend, especially in an economy like ours. I personally don’t care what resolution or how good a game looks; all the game has to accomplish is good gameplay. Hell, to this day, I can go back to playing Sega Genesis and have the same, if not, more fun than I have on modern systems, but that’s just me.

          • andré

i looove playing old good sega genesis, i used to have one. played the sonic games a lot. =)

        • Daniel Gonzalez

If you want PC standard graphics, then I suggest buying a PC if you haven’t got one. If high end graphics is what you’re looking for, then consoles probably aren’t for you.

        • Yousif Alromaithi

The same mistake I did on PS3 back on 2006. I swear if the mistake happened again I will explode at Sony. They failed me on Vita, begining on ps3, and the PSP GO. Now Nintendo failed me on Wii U only at spring but not at launch and now it started to pick up it’s speed. God knows if i am doing the right decisions as far I am saying it is better to keep what i have and cancel PS4 for good. But I have not done it yet but will.

        • readypembroke

GTA V isn’t coming to PS4 at all. It might come to PC

    • Nintedward

I’ve canceled my PS4 pre order. I’ve got thousands in the bank and can easily afford a PS4 and an Xbone but I’ve realised I don’t want one right away. I don’t really care about Killzone or any of the other PS4 launch window games. I’m getting Watchdogs on Wiiu. Xbone has Forza 5 and I’m a huge fan of the series. But I’m getting project cars on Wiiu.
      I’ll get a PS4 when the likes Of kingdom hearts 3 arrive….

This year is all about 3DS and Wiiu games (And few PS360 games)and so is next year. Sometime in 2014 I’ll get a PS4 if the right games are out then.

      • andré

i think you are missing out, the graphics in Watchdogs for ps4 is going to be soo much better than wii u. i have wii u, and going to buy ps4.

        • Madmagican
          • Sol Ridgeway

I usually don’t follow links on here, but this is my new favorite video. I really love the Apple reference.

          • fireheartis1

That was great man thanks for sharing. It’s all to true as well. In the early 90’s consoles came ready to play, now they just want your money. Although at least the Wii U did give a game to play when you got the Deluxe 32GB version, so I guess the Wii U was ready at launch lol.

        • Nintedward

The graphical difference between Wathdogs on PS4 and Wiiu isn’t going to be worth paying £350 for right away. Look at AC4 on PS4, barely looks better than Current gen. I don’t care AT ALL about the irrelevant little graphical differences, the games are still the same.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

AC4 to be fair, was most likely developed on 360 and then ported to other consoles. Most multi plats don’t have any real significant difference. A PS4, Wii U or Xbox One exclusive would show more of the power of each of the respective consoles. Don’t judge multiplatform games. They’re at most times a common misconception.

I do agree with you on the games will play the same. No arguments there.

          • Nintedward

Exactly! I’m not buying a PS4 right away just to play multiplats that look slightly better… and the exclusives look good but none of them have my attention really.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Yet. :P

          • andré

have you seen deep down on ps4, look on you tube for game play. the graphis is sick. i have never seen so good graphics on a pc, its like darksouls .

          • Elitepwnsface

I for the most part pick up multiplatform on pc if possible. Because i don’t have to worry about differences like these. I also am such a steam fanboy haha.

          • andré

i understand, but when the developer says that ac4 is going to have better graphics then pc version, and , its something about ps3 and xbox 360, the video card in the consoles is not good at all, i know both are hdmi, but its not as good as pc output, i dont know why. maby both machines only upscaling to 1080p, and pc is real 1080p.

        • Shigeru Miyamoto

wow you really think so huh?… hmmm… i have to disagree

      • Adrian

I lose a little bit of respect for anybody who publicly declares how much they have in the bank. just a little though, haha.

        • Nintedward

I ain’t bragging bro, I’m just saying although I have enough money to buy a Xbone and PS4 (If I wanted to) on day 1, i’m choosing not to because there is no point (imo). Wiiu and 3DS all the way for me for the foreseeable future…
Again, I’m not bragging nor am I rich…. I was just making a point.

          • Αίας Ταρνάρης

I am very much the same. Can afford any console and most games released monthly but only own a WiiU, 3DS and will buy an XboxOne for the Forza. And yes will get Project Cars too…!

          • Magnus Eriksson

I cant afford a new console now, but it really doesnt matter. I think I’ll wait and see, and when I can afford it I will buy whatever I think is best. :)

        • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, yeah. Now you got it out. Feel better now?

          • Adrian

            Haha, do you?

      • Yousif Alromaithi

I am right their with you.

      • DarkLegacy

Kingdom Hearts 3 will be a good game if you did get a PS4 but you would have to wait either 2014 or 15 due to it being developed which was announced this year cause SE were developing Final Fantasy XV. I’m actually getting one or perhaps a few games for Wii U like Sonic Lost World and I don’t know a lot of new games that I can buy for my Wii U

    • Ryebread

I know what you mean, GTA V is the only game i have played on my xbox 360 since i got my Wii u last December. :P

    • Derk

Good… cancel your PS4 preorder so that I can order one.

I called GameStop about a month ago and they were out of preorders.
Apparently, the system sold out of preorders really quick and it is going to be a huge launch. Cancelling your order might not be the best move.

      • BIG Franky

i know…. thats why i’m holding out…. even though i dont have a super high interest in much of the launch title schedule….

        • Marcus Navarro

If that’s the case, you’re better off holding off on the purchase.

        • Derk

Just wait like 3 months after launch and Diablo 3 will come to Ps4.

          • LukeBlackburn

I’ve already played Diablo 3 on pc… meh

      • Wayne Beck

Just for some perspective, the Wii U sold out of preorders too. It really doesn’t mean anything. What really matters is if Sony can keep them on the shelves through Christmas. I really hope they do well, but it would be a first for them.

    • disqus_jnx8BgXLZd

I was thinking on going Nintendo-Only this gen, but then Yakuza Ishin and MGS V came in play

    • Shigeru Miyamoto

you gotta get wind waker and donkey kong when they come out . those are going to be really fun!

    • Elitepwnsface

I ended up canceling my ps4 preorder to be able to afford all the wii u games. Probably hold off getting a ps4 till infamous comes out.

  • John Andalora

To be honest, I would probably refer people to the first one before going to the second. That’s not to say that the second is bad, but it had the same problem that most sequels have: It’s a bit too easy. Rayman Origins gave a very good challenge that incentivized me to push and get better. It took me a while to beat the game, and I enjoyed all of it. However, Legends was something I finished a bit too quickly, and the Murphy levels (while being an interesting change) were more of a frustration than a challenge. My biggest problem was getting the AI to go where I wanted it to, and if I was even a hair off, not good enough.
But this was still a very fun game. a 10/10? No. But a good game that I would tell people to buy if they wanted.

  • Marcus Navarro

Why, ah do dee-clare dat I gawt mahseylf a videe-o gayme den!
I will cop this game, but I’m short on cash. Damnit, Nintendo…always getting me to spend my money…

  • jrob23

Great review. Will definitely be getting this once it’s sub $20. Too many games ahead of it and Ubi needs to learn how to conduct business

    • BIG Franky

um…yeah…. so you, as the owner of a console that many developers are avoiding because of the reputation that its owners dont support third-party titles, are going to avoid supporting the developer of third party titles (nintendo’s staunchest supporter i might add)….to teach them a lesson? okay, yeah, that makes sense. legit.

  • Mike A

Ashley, I agree with your review but one small con for me was there is just one profile. I have blast playing/ helping my son and he’s friend, both 5 yrs old. However, at night I wanted to start my own game to unlock everything at much faster rate but I can’t without using same profile. More slots to save your game would been awesome. If there are more save slots I can’t find it.

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

That’s actually a good point and one I didn’t consider because I don’t have children. Thanks!

    • Rickard

Isn’t is possible if you create another Wii U user account? If I am not wrong there will be seperated saves under each user on the Wii U. Just try it :)

      • Mike A

Thanks Rickard, I will try later on tonight.

      • Andreas Sunde

This works, at least with Pikmin 3. Should work with all games.

  • mojack411

I had to decide between W101 and this for the time being and I chose W101. It’s a fantastic game as well and I’m glad that Rayman is just as good as well. I’ll ask for it for Xmas but as for now, in the words of the great Nick Kosmedes, I stared at the ether and asked for money, but the ether did not give me money for Legends. Sad day indeed.

    • Elem187

Depends, if you are a hardcore gamer, go for W101… if you prefer platformers, than Rayman.

    • Erik

GET W101! It’s a really fun game! And i have it!

      • mojack411

I had made that post meaning that I had already bought W101 over Legends haha. Yes, I agree W101 is a fantastic game. Legends being great too just means adding more to my plate down the line.

    • Andreas Sunde

Get Legends as soon as you can.

  • orpheus bryce

smh@ people writing about GTA in this thread. anyway just got Rayman, Splinter Cell Black List and currently downloading Zelda.. Rayman is a fun game i really enjoy playing it :)

    • Elem187

Pick up Wonderful 101, its easily the Wii U’s best game if you like hardcore games.

      • orpheus bryce

Thats gonna have to wait till i beat Zelda

  • MysticDude97

I’ve rented it, and I totally, and without a doubt, it’s true!

  • Knguro

    It’s definitely a 10/10. Nice Review!

  • Ismael Ototo

OF COURSE this was the best selling version out of the 3! It was conceived to be on Wii U. This just proves how much potential the Wii U has, that’s why we deserve great games like Soul Calibur 2 HD (considering the GameCube version outsold the other two despite being the least selling console of the 6th generation). Well, I hate to beg for this kind of games to hit the Wii U, but if we can help, why wouldn’t we? https://www.change.org/petitions/namco-bandai-port-soulcalibur-ii-hd-online-to-the-wii-u

    • Shigeru Miyamoto

i agree… also yer profile pic is one of the best Capullo covers. i also like the variant he drew of issue 16 with joker holding his ripped off face. awesome.

  • SleepySkullhead

    I so want this game!

  • Adrian

    And the giveaway……? Haha

  • Edward

Best Buy in North America seems to be having a sale on a lot of Wii U games. Mass Effect 3 is $11.99 so is Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper. Resident Evil Revelations is $29.99.

  • Vialtoclef

    It is preeety glitchy.

  • Ducked

I’ve never seen Wii U Daily give a game a 10/10, nice review.

  • Fuzunga

In the end, that extra development time really paid off.

  • catsby

100x better than New super mario U. Go get it!

  • Rickard

This is the best 3rd party title for Wii U, while waiting for Nintendos 1st party titles. It is the best 2d platformer I have played so far :)

  • DarkK

It has one, very small flaw: It’s way too short. However, that doesn’t stop me from replaying the game and unlocking everything, in 5-PLAYER CO-OP!

Also we get daily and weekly challenges, so I guess the main campaign being short isn’t that big of a deal.

  • Andreas Sunde

Good review, but did it really take 3 weeks to write?

  • C.S. Bailey

I waited months to buy Mass Effect 3 specifically for the Wii U, even though I played or owned the prequels on the 360.Even though the “better” supported versions were on a system I owned (360), I waited. Ubisoft just made me wait until there were better games coming out for my “struggling” system, and I magically chose them. Had RL been out during the launch window like they promised, I would have bought it instead of the eShop games I bought in the same time span.. Now, I plan to buy AC$ for the Wii U only after it has a price reduction..Not that it really matters to them.

  • Adrian Brown

Ubisoft usually make sales of their games on the eShop, so as soon as that happens I’ll get this game. I know it’s worth the $60, but I have many games already in my list: WWHD, Super Mario 3D World, Zelda ALBW, Watch_Dogs and Pikmin 3.

  • Randall Hellmer

“None, I can’t think of a single one. Go buy this game.”

    Top-notch criticism there…
