Target has buy 2 get 1 free Wii U games deal next week

Wii U target
If you’re thinking of buying and adding a new Wii U game to your collection soon, you should probably check out Target first. The US retailer has revealed a new Wii U games deal, where customers can buy two games and get one for free.

The offer is valid on all Wii U games, although quantities are limited, and as the ad states, the lowest priced game will be free. The lineup looks pretty good — New Super Mario Bros, Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, and The Wonderful 101 are all part of the deal.

Target also has the new Zelda Wind Waker Wii U bundle, which includes a Wii U Deluxe system and a digital copy of Wind Waker HD. As expected, it retails for $299.

UPDATE: a previous version of the article incorrectly stated that it was “buy 1 get 1 free”. It’s actually buy 2 get 1 free. Sorry for the confusion.

Two poor as of now… will go cry in my corner

  • Derk

Which is it? Is it buy 1 get one free or buy 2 get one free?

The article says buy one, and the picture says buy 2.

    • sdmac200600

Lol it’s buy two. Typo in the article title :P

        Hear, Hear!

  • Steve

If it is a buy one get one free deal, why does the ad say buy 2 get one free? Lol

  • Cold Heat

Some clarification is needed here; “buy one get one free”, “Buy 2, get 1 free”, “buy one game and get one for free” -these are not the same thing.

    • Fred

      buy 2 get 1 free

  • NintendoNoob

TIME TO GET WONDERFUL 101, PIKMIN 3, AND RAYMAN LEGENDS!!!
Oh and I’m amazed, the people at Target got the Wii U correct this time around

    • Ducked

I’m wondering why Planes is advertised lol

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

according to miiverse it’s not that bad

        • NintendoNoob

Well Miiverse always says all games are great. I went to the Fast and Furious page and everyone said it was an awesome game

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

            maybe they thought it was

        • Merrfn

They also said that “Legends of the guardians” was good. One of the worst games I have played in a long time.

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

            *shrugs*

          • Merrfn

Most of the time Miiverse say positive stuff. I think they feel if they say something negative they will get banned.

          • Fred

I never played that game, but I liked the movie

          • Merrfn

The movie was enjoyable, but the game was horrible. If I hadn’t seen the movie already the game would of put me off it.

          • Fred

thanks for the heads up. I’ll stay away from that game

          • Merrfn

My 6 year old sister liked it. If you have a young one it might be nice.

          • Fred

I have 2 young ones, but I only buy them games I’m willing to play with them so that’s out.

          • Merrfn

My local store had a pricing problem. $20 a game. Twenty NZD! We bought every single game they had in stock. That was when we bought Legend of the guardians. It was horrible, but it was only twenty dollars. We put it in the bin the next day….

        • Josiah Parsons

I got it from my library and it wasn’t too bad. the controls and graphics are pretty good, but the gameplay is mostly objective based and gets boring pretty fast. I wouldn’t buy it.

      • Merrfn

The movie looks bad enough, but games based on movies are usually twice as bad. Just as a general rule.

        • Ducked

Yeah Pixar hasn’t been good with ‘original’ lately

          • Merrfn

Cars 2 was horrible. The plot was too complex for children, and to babyish for somebody over the age of 9. Thats just my opinion on it. I don’t want to have to watch Planes with my sister at the movies…

          • Ducked

I feel bad for kids, kids movies these days stink. Both Dreamworks and Disney have made horrible movies in the past 3 years. It’s so unusual for them.

          • Brendan Tate

            planes isn’t made by pixar

          • Ducked

I missed that, I thought it was because it was a ripoff of Cars.

          • Razo_E

It’s not done by Pixar. It’s pure Disney. They tried to cash in on the Cars hype and failed miserably.

  • FlashFan207

Finally!! It’s nice to see a retailer at least trying to make the Wii U an attractive option! I’m there! Is this deal available in Canada, too?

  • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Not a bad deal! Jump on it!

    • Ducked

Lets hope this deal happens again in 2 months

  • Daniel Gonzalez

I’ll probably pick up the Wii U along with Rayman Legends and NSMBU for my younger cousin and hold onto it until his bday next month.

    • Ducked

      Very generous

    • howling_wolf1334:[

awww man!!! Im gonna buy this WW HD bundle and sell the one that I have to my friend!!! Too bad…. for my friend!!! Lol…

    • Schultz38

      Oh. Hey Daniel. Don’t you remember me? It’s me, your long lost cousin. ;_;

I’m having a birthday party this Saturday……… Just FYI.

  • EricNavedo

it look like target got the picture right at the buttom the console xD

    • Ducked

You do realize everyone makes mistakes?

      • Merrfn

It was just a rather big mistake…

        • Daniel Gonzalez

LEAVE TARGET ALOOOOOONE!!! That’s all I got.

          • Merrfn

I didn’t even know target existed until I went on a holiday to Australia. I think we might have the same store, but similar to EB games (Aus and NZ GameStop), “the warehouse” may be the New Zealand version of target…

I don’t know, but I will be able to confirm it when/if we get a sale on Wii U games.

  • John Andalora

The ad very clearly states buy 2 get 1 free on Wii U games. Please change the article to reflect that.

  • Guest

    Fail article.

  • TCar

Target has these deals about 6 times a year and it is the prime time to load up on some good games! I will be getting W101, Pikmin and a free copy of Rayman. Hah, suck it Ubisoft!

    • John Andalora

Not to rain on your parade, but Ubisoft already got money for selling it to Target. Target’s just trying to get rid of excess inventory.

      • TCar

Oh, I know. But to me, I won’t be paying for it, even though I know I really am. :)

      • Fred

Excess inventory?!? they just barely stocked up on Rayman, Wonderful 101, Planes, Pikmin, and Super Luigi. Wonderful 101 was literally TODAY

        • John Andalora

And why do you think that they keep inventory so low? Pikmin 3 sold 440,000 copies worldwide (170,000 in US), Planes sold about 10,000 (US made up biggest chunk of that), and Super Luigi has about 130,000 (with 30,000 from the US). You think any store would want to keep buying games for a console with extremely low demand with games selling this badly?

Rayman Legends and Wonderful 101, as far as I’ve heard, had such low demand that stores stocked very little. And frankly, I don’t blame them. It’s a shame that even extremely low inventory is excess inventory, but can you really say that these sales numbers would convince you to put these games in a store and try to sell them to others?

          • Fred

You’re wrong. NDP just came out and Pikmin 3 was one of only a couple games in the top ten that weren’t multiplatform.

          • John Andalora

            1) I give you charts and facts and you say I’m wrong. I have literally given you proof and you talk about NDP as if it completely disproves the point. How cute. Guess I should’ve expected it from a fanboy to look the other way on some facts and glorify others.

            2) NDP doesn’t mean the game sold millions of units. That article, if you recall, was about how sales for retail video games in the US has improved in August over previous months. You may think that this is great, but consider two important things.

            A) Summer sales were extremely weak in US, and anything looks great. That’s why the sales numbers are such a big deal. 170,000 units sold looks great when on a top 10 list, but not when you consider how poor sales have been recently throughout the US.

            B) The top 4 games on that list were released in LATE AUGUST, and they already overpowered Pikmin 3. That’s pretty bad. And you may think “Oh, well the games were multiplatform, so they obviously had more sales.” Incorrect. In fact, Madden 25 and Saints Row IV sales overpower Pikmin 3 in North America on either console separately, while Splinter Cell: Blacklist sales on the Xbox 360 alone outweigh Wii U sales of Pikmin 3.

            http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=Madden+NFL+25

            http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=Saints+Row+IV

            http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=Splinter+Cell%3A+Blacklist

Remember that NDP only refers to the sales in the US throughout August, and that just because it got on the NDP list doesn’t mean that it’s sales are extremely impressive or powerful. It means it merely sold more than a couple other games.

      • Lovejit Marok

What you taking about? Excess inventory is when games are old not when they’ve just got released…

        • John Andalora

Excess inventory is also for when items sell extremely poorly, have little to no demand, and stores cannot get rid of the product. When they can’t move a product, it’s just about as good to them as throwing money down a well.

          • nexxus6

Funny, all the Target and Toys R Us in my area are sold out of both Rayman and W101 (and that is without any sort of buy 2 get 1 free deal). Weird, on how fast they sold out with such low demand.

          • Lovejit Marok

Exactly, there sold out near me. I had to order it off Amazon.

          • John Andalora

Well when you have less than 10 copies, it’s not so hard to sell out. The GameStop near me had 4 copies of Rayman Legends on release, and the Wal-mart had no copies for Wii U.

          • nexxus6

Your logic that they are putting it on sale to clear out inventory is flawed. If stores are running out without a sale or incentive to buy games, then they aren’t having any trouble clearing inventory. You can’t say that Target is having this sale to clear inventory because games aren’t selling than say that stores are sold out due to low on-hand quantities. Which is it, inventory sitting on the shelf or stores running out of limited quantities?

          • John Andalora

            Look. It’s very simple.

In the beginning of the Wii U’s life, people bought up a bunch of the launch games to sell, thinking they were going to be successes. Games like Batman Arkham City, Karaoke Party, Assassins Creed 3, Cabela’s hunt, Tanks! Tanks! Tanks!, Tekken Tag Tournament, and all sorts of games for the Wii U were bought to try and cash in on the new console. Unfortunately it didn’t sell, so these stores had it stuck on their shelves for a long time.

Do you understand so far? This is where the “lots of inventory” part comes in.

I bet you’re asking yourself “but wait, doesn’t that mean that they aren’t running out of limited quantities?”

I’m getting there. Just be patient.

When these launch games didn’t sell and they were stuck with them on their shelves, they decided not to buy the new games, or buy far lower quantities of them. This was to make sure they didn’t pay for too many copies and have more stuck on their shelves.

            Do you understand?

They have lots of inventory on the old ones that no one bought, so they don’t stock their shelves as heavily with the new ones. So when the 4 people in the area who want to buy that game get around to it, they won’t need to reduce cost or have a sale just to try and get rid of it.

I really hope you understand what I’m trying to say here.
The logic behind it isn’t flawed. The issue is you assumed I only referred to the new titles that have come out being both “excess inventory” and “selling out in limited quantities”, or that Target is focused on unloading the new titles. But they want people to have 2 games in particular that they want, and then get rid of one they didn’t actually want to pay money for so it would leave their store forever.

          • nexxus6

I understand what you are saying, but you make it sound as if these deals are only done on WiiU games because they don’t sell. However, this type of sale has been used by retailers on all platforms. Stores have had similar specials for 360 and PS3 games also, so I guess you shouldn’t make it sound like this upcoming WiiU deal is some ominous sign for Nintendo. Also, stores always end up with excess inventory on some titles of games for all systems, so don’t make it sound as if every title jumps off the shelves for non-Nintendo systems.

          • John Andalora

Something to note: Most of the sales you see on games for 360 or PS3 are sales of the “pre-owned” games, particularly games that are new enough to where people know about them, but old enough to have reduced sales. Having sales on completely new games is not only rare thing, but a bad thing, and adding it for ALL games on one console should concern people more than it does.

Also, it’s not that few consoles jump off the shelves. Here’s a list of sales for most of the games for Wii U.

            Nintendo Land (2.33m)

New Super Mario Bros. U (2.07m)

            ZombiU (0.51m)

            Lego City Undercover (0.48m)

            Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed(0.26m)

            Assassin’s Creed III (0.18m)

            Scribblenauts: Unlimited (0.18m)

            Batman: Arkham City (0.17m)

            Skylanders Giants (0.15m)

Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two(0.12m)

            Game & Wario (0.10m)

            FIFA Soccer 13 (0.09m)

            Darksiders II (0.09m)

            Disney Infinity (0.07m)

            Resident Evil: Revelations (0.06m)

Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth (0.05m)

            Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper (0.04m)

            WipeOut 3 The Game (0.04m)

            Transformers: Prime (0.04m)

            Tank! Tank! Tank! (0.04m)

            Game Party: Champions (0.04m)

            See the pattern?

          • Lovejit Marok

So your telling me that example, Rayman Legends isn’t selling well or has little demand to no demand and they’re trying to get rid of there stock? I’m surprised, as Rayman legends got a brilliant review and is sold out in two Tesco’s and Game stores near me.

          • John Andalora

First off, I’d like to state that I never said Rayman Legends isn’t selling well or has little demand. I know you probably inferred that from when I told that man that Ubisoft got the money and that he isn’t screwing anyone over, but if you remember correctly I stated that Target is having this sale to “get rid of excess inventory.” Now, you and I both know that Rayman Legends isn’t the only game being sold for Wii U. Target is simply advertising that they have the latest games in the hopes of getting more people in. Perhaps it was because I didn’t make it clear, but when I was referring to “excess inventory” I was referring to all the games that aren’t being sold off: Karaoke Party, Smurfs 2, Planes, Cabela’s Dangerous hunt, Batman Arkham City Wii U edition, and so on. They’re trying to get rid of the games that aren’t selling well by giving one away for free in the hopes to reduce their stocks of them.

As for Rayman Legends, I’d like to tell you something: The GameStop near me only had 4 copies of Rayman Legends for Wii U, while the Wal-mart only had copies for Xbox and PS3. Now, that was me calling early on day 1 of release.
It’s not hard to sell out when you don’t hold too many copies of it.

Also remember that “brilliant reviews” doesn’t mean a game sells well. Bayonetta had great reviews too, but it didn’t sell past 2 million.

Edit: I am glad to see that the Wii U version of Rayman Legends is in the top 10 US sales from the week ending September 7, but at the same time concerned that the opening 4 days only sold 20,669 copies. That’s a rather low figure for the opening four days of a game.

            http://www.vgchartz.com/

          • Lovejit Marok

Rayman Legends actually has sold more on the WiiU then it has on any other console, Super mario wii u had sold over 2 million copies so I’m surprised that there on that ‘target offer’. But it doesn’t explain that they are clearing out there stocks, It might just be a way to sale more WiiUs.

I understand that Karaoke Party, Smurfs 2, Planes, Cabela’s Dangerous hunt & Batman Arkham City Wii U edition aren’t selling well, but they’re not included in the offer above (apart from planes which is a bad idea because your going to buy the other 5 over that game).

In UK, we have a store called HMV who stock WiiU in stores but not on shelves. I was disappointed to hear this but apparently movie merchandise sells more (which replaced WiiUs shelves).

The reason isn’t because they are trying to get rid of it, it’s becau

          • Lovejit Marok

They are trying to sell it. After this sale is over… They will fill there stock back. CHRISTMAS is near and end of year stuff normally goes on sale.

          • John Andalora

            1) Rayman Legends has sold more on Wii U, but not much more that would justify saying it’s great.

            2) As for SSBU, Here’s something that might explain it. Sales of NSMBU, while being one of the better selling games, has been waning over time, and while one or two good games have been rather decent sellers, there are more games that are selling rather poorly that they want to get rid of.

Here’s a list of some games on Wii U, and how many copies they’ve sold, which I got from vgchartz:

            Nintendo Land (2.31m)

            ZombiU (0.51m)

            Lego City Undercover (0.47m)

            Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed(0.25m)

            Assassin’s Creed III (0.18m)

            Scribblenauts: Unlimited (0.18m)

            Batman: Arkham City (0.17m)

            Skylanders Giants (0.15m)

Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two(0.12m)

            Game & Wario (0.10m)

            Darksiders II (0.09m)

            FIFA Soccer 13 (0.09m)

            Disney Infinity (0.06m)

            Resident Evil: Revelations (0.05m)

Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth (0.05m)

            Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper (0.04m)

            WipeOut 3 The Game (0.04m)

            Transformers: Prime (0.04m)

            Tank! Tank! Tank! (0.04m)

            Game Party: Champions (0.04m)

Now, most of those games are sitting on their shelves in the hopes of being sold while the new games aren’t being offered. That’s why they’re trying to get rid of them.

            3) Not to insult your reading skills buddy, but the Target add says “Buy 2 get 1 free on ALL Wii U games.” Those 6 aren’t the only games on the Buy 2 get 1 free rack. That further demonstrates how they want to get rid of their clutter rather than just sell off their best games to move more Wii U’s.

  • Lil J Moore

Well I get paid this week. I guess I’m going to target.

  • ZeldaFan83

When exactly does this deal start and end? Is it Sept. 15-21 or Sept. 22-28?

    • http://www.gamesobscura.com/ themizarkshow

      It’s September 22nd – 28th.

  • TCar

This must be for the week of the 22nd of September. Current ad only shows two games listed with no B2G1 offers.

  • Jake

I wish it was buy 1, get 1 cause I have nsmbu and nslu and pikmin. Planes is trash so I hope when WW comes out they will have the same deal

    • Elitepwnsface

I am pretty sure it applies to store selection

  • Ducked

I could buy W101, Pikmin 3, and Rayman Legends, but I’ll worry about the new LoZ bundle first

    • Fred

Get a super good deal get the bundle and all 3 games you’ll have plenty of fun.

      • Ducked

Nah, I won’t buy Pikmin 3 and W101 until next year.

        • Elem187

That’s insane. its easily the two best games on the system…. Wonderful 101 should be a GOTY contender.

          • Ducked

Not with a 79 on metacritic

  • Elitepwnsface

So i get rayman and Wow 101 and get Lego city. I think i will jump in on this.

  • Tim van Broekhoven

You would be dumb if you don’t pick up two games with the same price…

  • Tim van Broekhoven

Why is NSLU so cheap and NSMBU not?

    • Geoffrey Tasker

because one is a dlc add on and the other isn’t…

      • Tim van Broekhoven

butbutbut Here (in The Netherlands) it has the same price as NSMBU… That’s not fair!!!

        • Arthur Jarret

          • Arthur Jarret

Hahaha I get it… Wel slim, maar niet fijn voor ons!

  • only god can judge me

Ill pick up the zelda windwaker deluxe bundle I preordered at gamestop then ill stop by target to get rayman legends, wonderful 101,then pikmin3.

  • Elitepwnsface

Going to get wow 101, Rayman and Lego City. Me already have pikman 3ss

    • Arthur Jarret

Good list, wrong abbreviation. (wow =/= wonderful)

  • The Clockwork Being

Funny Targets have yet to open here in Canada. Oh well they will probably have a Grand Opening sale during the next month or so or be ready for the holidays.

  • Merrfn

Too bad my country doesn’t have target…

    • Lovejit Marok

      Same. :(

  • DarkNite14

splinter cell blacklist included in this deal??

    • Merrfn

      ALL Wii U games.

  • Wiiluigi

Too bad I have a whole bunch of wii u games already if not i would be on this.

  • Mochlum

I really hope they count digital game download codes, so I can but W101 and Rayman and get Wind Waker HD free. If not, I’ll just use it to get Scribblenauts, Game and Wario, or Monster Hunter 3.

  • Kevin Sepulveda

Whoa target actually got the picture right…!

    • Merrfn

Surprise surprise! They now know the difference between a Wii and a Wii U!

  • Mitch Hall

Huh… maybe I’ll take advantage of this. I’d like to get Pikmin and Rayman Legends, but as for the third game, I have no idea (partially because I don’t know what Target has in stock.) Any suggestions?

(FYI, I have Wonderful 101 already)

    • Merrfn

I really don’t know. Sonic Lost worlds? Has that released yet?

If it has you should get the same thing as me. Sonic Lost World, Rayman legends and Pikmin 3.

      • Mitch Hall

Nah, Lost World comes out on October 22nd. Otherwise I’d be all over it.

        • Merrfn

Oh man. Thats a shame. I don’t know… Lego City?

    • Arthur Jarret

Do you have lego city, Monster hunter, Injustice: Gods among us or Need for speed already?

I also don’t know what they have in stock or what is discounted in the US already… but I had a lot of fun with those games…

      • Mitch Hall

Might get NFS. I WOULD get Monster Hunter, but I don’t have any friends who play it online.

        • Arthur Jarret

Neither did I – but that game actually made me some.

You know, the ideal kind of friends who chat a lot, play online all the time – but never come to visit and mess up the place!

  • Is_Mort

Buy 3 super luigi u and sell 2 of them on ebay. You’ll end up with a super luigi u for about 20 bucks.

  • SleepySkullhead

    What days exactly, next week?

  • Michael Hancock

Can you get 3 Pikmin 3’s?

    • Fred

I would guess yes, but I wouldn’t recommend it as Wonderful 101 and Rayman Legends are AWESOME games.

  • Dan Karthas

Is this real? I have never seen a target ad where the borders were green instead of red

    • Merrfn

      Seems pretty legit.

    • Isaac Franco

Look for the weekly ad that corresponds to your city at target.com

  • Fred

It says this applies to ALL Wii U games!!!

    • Merrfn

That is awesome! Gonna get Rayman legends, Pikmin 3 and LEGO city.

      • Fred

        nice choices

  • Arthur Jarret

    You lucky American bastards…

  • Truthteller

They are clearing stock and want to make sure that people take all Wii U items and they won’t restock.

  • Tekina Sibawo

Damnit! Now I have to wait another week to get Wonderful 101…
Well at least I’ll get a free game

  • Tekina Sibawo

Am I the only one who is not psyched about the new Windwaker HD bundle? I don’t find the gamepad with the decals that attractive… And I like my disc based games so I can lend them to my friends/family.

  • Logan Waltz

that’s so fucked up. $299 special edition with wind waker on top of a buy two, get one.

  • NextChannelGames

So can i buy the wii u games at Target as a digital purchase were they give me a code or just for a disc?

    • Fred

I’d like to know the same cause I buy all my Wii U games digitally

  • adamm

The deal is less sweet when you consider that other retailers have lower prices on a few of those (including Pikmin)

  • SwirlGamer

    Game and Wario,Wornderful101,and Pikmin 3

  • Fuzunga

I just got Rayman the other day! Noooo!!!!

  • Linskarmo

Does this count for pre-orders placed during that week? ;)
    Probably not. :(

  • OVERGRO OVERGRO

Awesome! Is it effective in Canada too?

  • Energonkid

My Aunts are getting Rayman Legends, The Wonderful 101, and Pikmin 3 and giving them to me for my birthday next Wednesday!

  • Steven Scott

I did the best buy deal now time for the target one
