Nintendo giving away Wii Fit U free for a month

Nintendo has announced that it will be giving away Wii Fit U for a month to let users try out the game.

Many people have been wondering what Nintendo will do to get more Wii U consoles in consumers homes and this latest announcement just may be it. Currently Nintendo has announced that it will be giving away Wii Fit U completely free for a month. The offer starts on November 1st and all users will need to take advantage of the offer is a Wii balance board and a Wii U with an internet connection.

This makes a lot of business sense for Nintendo, as it wants those households that purchased the original Wii for Wii Fit to upgrade to Wii Fit U and a free month of a game is certainly a great way to do that. This promotion extends from November 1 to January 31, with the free month kicking in the first day the trial is downloaded. In order to keep the game, users will simply need to purchase a Fit meter if they already have the needed balance board, which retails by itself for $19.99.

You can check out full details in the Nintendo Direct above, but let us know what you think of this offer. Will you be trying it out?

1 minute in and I’m dying LOL! The Direct exercise!

But outside of Super Smash Bros. 4. I really have no interest in Wii fit.
I played the first one, and got the jist of it.
I would rather go jog outside….with my 3DS and get spotpasses :D

  • Jack5221

I never bought Wii fit for my Wii. But seeing the new improvements they made, Im going to give it a try. Its free so I’ve got nothing to lose! Nov 1st, my body will be ready!!

    • Michael DeVore

“Free” is relative. The Software is free, but taking advantage of that is only possible if you have a balance board. So if you buy a new board and the fit meter you’re going to spend about 80 bucks if you go with a 3rd party board. I’m not sure if those have even been tested so you could end up buying the hundred dollar version anyways. If you can borrow a board, or find one for cheap then defiantly give it a try, but without the board you’ll be disappointed. This is more of a promotion to get all the existing Wii Fit users to upgrade over the holiday season.

      • Jack5221

Come to think of it, I have an 8gb Wii U. So I might as well just get the meter – game – balance board bundle since Reggie did say the download would be “hefty”.

    • aldo2410

It passed a lot of time since I stoped playing the first one, now im barely a couch potato, time to get fit again and maybe find a girlfriend

  • Shota

    free!

  • Kurt Schneider

Wii sports U is the big news

    • ConCity Soldier

I just bought Wii Sports 2006 online yesterday for me and my family to play each other. ;( I wish they would have announced this Wii Sports HD remake before. It uses motion plus and the old one doesn’t, and keeps all the games in tact. Now I want Wii Sports HD. What a waste of money for me to buy Wii Sports 2006 now. I knew I should have gotten Sports Resort. Ugggh ;(

      • Nintedward

That Wii sports online thing is absolutely Genius. I swear to god I’ve said many times they need to make Wii sports HD with online…. The Nintengods are listening!

This will be a killer app on Wiiu. Can’t wait to pwn people at golf!

        • Arthur Jarret

I don’t like the free to play model and would prefer an on-disc collection, though…

Will buy it all though. I will beat you all at the next WiiUDaily online session! Muahahaha

          • Andrew W Garttmeyer

wait wait wait. Are you guys saying that I can finally have a group of 4 Wii bowlers at my house challenge another house of 4 in a bowl-a-thon??? Please tell me this is the case????

EDIT: Where did you guys get any of this information? Perhaps, I should watch the video above? Think the article writer would mention that in the article, hate watching videos at work.

          • Arthur Jarret

There’s a new article about it just posted. I got my info from joystiq earlier today.

The video works too. But who has time to watch videos? I’m way too important for that!

          • Levi Johansen

I love watching videos at work… lol

          • Tim van Broekhoven

Haha ik doe ook me dan!

          • Arthur Jarret

          • Shota

            hahaha vergeet mij niet!

          • Tim van Broekhoven

Ok ik zal jou niet vergeten! ;)

          • Tim van Broekhoven

            Lol! XD

          • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah! Im busy working out on my balance board. Make me a burger too. And bring me a beer on your way back.

          • Arthur Jarret

Darn, forgot about google translate… we need a new forum to formulate our plans to take over the US government, guys!

          • Magnus Eriksson

Hoho, nederlandsk er litt likt skandinavisk. I hvertfall i grove trekk. Trenger ikke google translate for det ;)

          • Arthur Jarret

Ah, vandaar! – Tsja, ik gebruik google translate ook nooit. Ik doe dan wel eens zaken met china, maar dat lijkt toch genoeg op Nederlands om zo te kunnen begrijpen! Wan an!

          • Magnus Eriksson

Wonder if they have changed the bowling controls? Not to fun to play a competition if everyone makes a flawless round of strikes.

          • Arthur Jarret

I think it’ll be similar to bowling on Wii Sports Resort – as this was already optimized for Wii Remote plus.
A lot of people had a hard time on it, while they claimed to be perfect at the original bowling.

Don’t worry though, I’ll be sure to throw a ball backwards every now and then for lulz

          • Magnus Eriksson

The original was too easy. When you know how to, its very simple to strike. Actually impossible not to. Didnt try Resort though, here that I should as I loved the original (atleast until I knew how to strike everytime).

          • Arthur Jarret

I really hope they will add the resort sports too… I’d love some multiplayer sword fighting, bicycle races and jetski racing!

But both the bowling and golf (only two returning games) were much improved over the original in resort by using the motion plus – seeing as these games will use plus, you’ll get your wish of seeing less strikes (unless you’re playing against me, of course).

          • Levi Johansen

yeah, everything uses motion plus now, should make it more accurate but also more difficult to do the exact same round after round…

Anyway, since they’re gonna let us pay for certain sports, should we assume they will add more sports than the original Wii Sports had? Like fencing?

        • Edward

I hope that they keep track of stats too. Golf hopefully will have different courses and 18 holes.

        • PS4/WiiU

I will be the one doing the powning.
And hopefully there can be leaderboards

          • Ducked

            Leaderboards would be freaking awesome.

          • DragonSilths

Didn’t it show Leader Boards? Or was the Wii Fit U?

        • Mario

          All hail the Nintengods!!

          • Magnus Eriksson

Imperial Nintendogs! Free? Nothing is free but in the communist paradise of Marx and Lenin! They will feel the red wrath of the proletarians iron hard fist as a punishment for their imperialist lies!

      • bizzy gie

Wii Sports U is a brand new game not an HD remake.

      • DragonSilths

Honestly what did you waste? $5 on Wii Sports lol. It shouldn’t be a big deal.

      • fireheartis1

Not really a waste of money since the games are fun as well. Plus Bowling, Baseball, and Golf work pretty well even without the Wiimotion Plus. Tennis and Boxing are the main games that need Wiimotion Plus. I think you’ll enjoy it no matter what and you can get the HD version later on.

        • Arthur Jarret

Did you play wii sport resort? The motion plus made a HUGE difference in bowling (the strike streaks lessened due to more precise requirements, and you were able to put a spin on the ball to get a split) – and it made for a huge difference and difficulty spike in golf as well. I’d say the need it.

I hope they bring back the resort sports too… MMO skydiving, dogfights, sword fighting, jetski and bicycle races… it’d be great!

          • fireheartis1

Yes I’ve played Wii Sports Resort and I liked it a lot, but I still think Wii Sports is worth the little bit of money someone will pay for it. Both games are great in my opinion. Plus having all the games you mentioned would be great in Wii Sports Club.

    • Nintenjoe82

are you sure that by “Wii sports U” you don’t mean “Google Street U balance board integration”?

      • Edward

Nope it’s Wii Sports Club U. Meaning its the original wii sports with online versus match and HD graphics.

        • Nintenjoe82

          sarcasm is wasted on you

          • Edward

Online Sarcasm is hard to get sometimes.

          • Nintenjoe82

            fair point.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            I get that a lot.

          • Edward

Compared to hearing it and/or seeing facial expressions, reading it is quite hard to comprehend especially if you don’t know that persons personality.

    • Magnus Eriksson

      Yey, it is.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog

Way past cool! Now lets see if Wii Fit U catch up with me…

  • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

    For a month!

  • Rick Valenta

Where do I sign? The only thing I would say is that I want a hardcopy :)

  • Pikachief

It’ll only be a system seller if they can properly advertize a downloadable game to their casual consumers. Which I doubt they will if they even can. With this and Wii sports HD. Since theyre both games aimed more towards the casual markets I cant see them doing too good till they have retail releases

  • BIG Franky

my wife loves the first wii fit and still uses it… so this will definitely be in our home. i also think this title is an example of a game that is actually better served as a digital download, as sometimes to simply do your daily check-in, no unboxing the disc and putting it in is required….. simply power up and boom, your done. (for many people, once they take the wii fit disc out the first time, it never finds its way back in! LOL…)
    this is a great idea.

    • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

my wife will love this one too

  • AlThor

Any idea what the Fit Meter goes for $ and what the WiiU Fitness will retail for?

    • Petri

      60€/$ for the game+meter, 20€/$ for meter, I heard.

Edit: meter comes with the game on retail.

    • Jack5221

The meter will cost 20$. The game is free until January 31. If you buy the meter for 20$ now, you get to keep the game forever, free of charge.

  • Clel

    Daaaang, that is smaart!

  • Rick Valenta

WAIT A MINUTE! NEW WII SPORTS?!?! Why is this not the main story?

  • Jon

I recognized her for screenshots for smash Bros. 4… not from other Wii Fit…. LOL

  • SonicLucario

Ahhh time to dust off my balance board, I remember having so much fun with he original Wii Fit but then got over it so hopefully this one will keep my interest longer

  • Petri

Is balance board necessary for this game?

    • Adam Porter

      yes

      • Petri

But they don’t sell that separately nor bundle it with Wii Fit U?
Need to buy original Wii Fit game with balance board for this game?

        • Zeldatrek

You didn’t watch the video did you. Two bundles will be available Dec. 13 one with the disc and activity meter the other with disc, meter, and balance board. Or you could go to Game Stop and buy a balance board used which would cheapest if the new bundles retail about the same as they used to. 89.99 or 20 take your pick.

          • Petri

Yes, just going with the information written here and on other site.
My PC here at work cant play any streaming videos, and also sound is not working.

I found one used for 55€ inc. shipping.
I was thinking about getting it, and see if my wife buys in to it.
Then 20€ for the meter wont be that much for upgrade.

          • readypembroke

the Air Force Base where I live has the Fit Plus balance board bundles for $45!!!

        • Fred

There will be a bundle with a disc board and fit meter but that’s the most expensive bundle and considering over 40 million Wii Fit balance boards were sole most people have a board (or can get a used one pretty cheap)

  • Linskarmo

Ill take it! Free is good. I don’t know about this “fit meter” though… And November 1st to January 31st sounds like two (edit: 3) months to me.

    • Petri

Its between that time you can download, and use for 1 month?

    • JVAN63

      Nov 1-30 + Dec 1-31 + Jan 1-31 = 3 months

      • Linskarmo

Yup. I had a bit of a brain fart there. :P

  • ConCity Soldier

I want this Wii Fit U game for my mom to play it. She has been asking for an exercise video game on my Wii U.

    • Fred

My Shape from Ubisoft (it was a launch game) is actually really good I love it.

  • Jon

looks like I’ll get the meter to get it for free :D (well…. $20)

  • Magnus Eriksson

Good, my 140 kilos heavy body needs this. Ill get both the Wii Fit U and Wii U Sports Club. Also Im buying two Fit Meters, one for me and one for my girlfriend (who is not fat by the way).

Edit: Also clever thing from Nintendo to price them like this. Is it possible that we might see many sports games on DLC in the future? Anyways, this makes me like my Wii U a bit more.

    • icebear80

I’ll try the fit meter on my one and a half year old kid too. There will be almost only red lines and very little grey I’m sure :)
Both the Wii Sports and the Wii fit U is something the Wii U need in order to sell more consoles. It was one of the reasons the Wii found its way into family households. Now its up to whether Nintendo can find a way to promote this and show those same people that the Wii U is a new console that has upgraded and enhanced what they loved 6-7 years ago!
I don’t know about Sweden, but here in Norway it feels like the Wii U is non-existing. The only people I have come across to discuss Wii U titles with is store clerks at Gamestop. And I only know 1 single electronics store in the whole Oslo area (1.5 million inhabitants) where you can try a Wii U.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Hadde tidligere ihvertfall. Men ja, det er tynt. Dro rundt og kikket etter lanseringen. Platekompaniet hadde to spill gjemt unna i lokalet.

  • http://www.w-o-n.org/ GoldDreams

The main highlight of this video was the announcement of Wii Sports Club and it’s online play. Why wasn’t that mentioned in this article?

  • Guest

Wii Sports Club looks awesome. See you guys on the tennis court!

  • ICHI

Sold! Mrs ICHI is so happy lol

  • Zuxs13

    Time to get fit again!

  • Einar

    “Our bodies are sufficiently ready.”

    • 和夫

The longer I stare at that picture, the more I get creeped out by it. (°_°) But my body is ready for this! :)

  • Petri

    IR port… why not NFC?

    • quieT

      IR is cheaper…

  • Daniel Gonzalez

    That’s nice of them.

  • TULFich

Smas Bros.´ Wii Fit Trainer looks more fit

  • Fred

Yes I’ll buy it, but can they really be making money when I get the full game and the fit meter for $19.99? Keep in mind that Best Buy gets a cut of that $19.99. They can’t be making money that meter tracks steps, intensity (using an accelorometer) and altitude change and then can communicate with my gamepad. That’s a lot of tech for $19.99 and Nintendo only gets a percentage of that and has to pay to ship it to Best Buy.
Maybe I’m wrong and it’s cheaper than I think, but it does have a low quality screen on it too.

  • Nintendofreak

i want a kfc traincer that would be badass

  • Aleks

There was no mention of Wii Sports club as a disc release :( I hope its just a matter of time.

  • Merrfn

I love the way Iwata says “directly”. Maybe it is the accent, I don’t know…

  • letzringj

Ya I think this is going to be a great way to get the game for 20 bucks. Now I just have to do something about that memory! Anyone have any thoughts or leads on cheap HDD drives?

    • Veries Seals

Go to http://www.newegg.com. find you a great external hard drive, with a power cord. Do Not get one of the mini hard drives. It must have its own power cord. Happy shopping. you will not be disappointed at the prices.

  • Johny

Trial and super cheap Wii Sports U and Free Wii fit U ??… WTF ! AWESOME move nintendo to move Wii U units… now please.. for the love of god… ADVERTISE that shit.. you got your big games here now… Windwaker is amazing.. W101, pikmin, mario and Mario kart coming… Sports U Fit U for almoust free… ADVERTISE THAT SHIT NOW !

  • Wiiluigi

Getting this! my girl wants this so bad. We can’t wait. Better than $59.99. I have the balance board already. 20 bucks is a no brainer.

  • cmanplays

but, of course there’s always going to be that guy who mistakes the balance board for the gamepad.

  • uPadWatcher

Best 2 in 1 video ever! Two thumbs up to the two presidents of Nintendo– Global President Iwata and The Regginator!

  • Zuxs13

Seriously IR port? did they forget they put an NFC chip in the game pad? lol

    • Kurt Johansen

My same thoughts. Can the NFC chip only transfer small amounts of information — not enough for a day of data?

  • leafsfan73

Now they need to release a patch for Pikmin 3 that allows online play for the bingo multiplayer

    • Merrfn

      That would be fantastic.

  • Kirbyomega

So….. I can get a game for free? Like forever? or is it a free trial?

    • Merrfn

      Read the article (ಠ_ಠ)

      • Kirbyomega

I did “Wii Fit U and a free month of a game” it sound like a free trial when they say it for a month. I hadn’t watched the Nintendo Direct yet, but I have now and I understand. I think its cool how it’s pretty much free, and I know what I’m getting my mom for christmas

  • Gregg Cerenzio

Wii Sports bowling is the perfect digital game, awesome for a quick boot up and game.

  • Iván Enrique Garcerant Tafur

    Good move :-)

  • nexxus6

I think Wii Sports Club is a good idea. Looking forward to taking the Wisconsin Club to new heights.

  • TheWichi

So… Wii Sports U looks cool but if you want all the games for ever you have to pay $50??? its too much for me…

  • fireheartis1

Now as long as Nintendo advertises this like the did Wii Fit, people will start to buy the Wii U. The advertising isn’t as strong as it was with Wii, and if they start advertising this like crazy people will buy the Wii U. I can’t wait to see what happens with this game being free for a month.

  • LEGENDnoONE

    That’s champion

  • Aamir Islam

So we do have our ambassador program after all :)
