Wii U update is now live, go get it! [Updated with Changelog]

The Wii U update is now live and ready to be downloaded, so fire up that Wii U!

System Update Icon

The firmware update for the Wii U that was hinted at earlier this afternoon is now live. Japanese patch notes are available here if you happen to understand Japanese. We’re currently in the process of getting translated notes for our English speakers, but one thing we do know is that this update allows you to play Wii software on the GamePad using Off TV mode. You’ll still need to use a Wii remote to play these games, however.

[Update: Here's an unofficial changelog below.]

Update is currently 700mb to download. Here’s a list of changes:

  • Output Wii-only software to the Wii U GamePad (still requires the use of a Wii remote)
  • Automatically receive demos and trial software from Nintendo
  • Added USB Keyboard Support
  • Manage your Nintendo Network ID from computers and smartphones
  • Wii-only software now supports Dolby Pro Logic II
  • Friends list now viewable from the Wii U menu
  • Settings updates, including the ability to allow or disallow automatic downloads, change output sound
  • You can now use a headset connected to the Wii U GamePad for chat
  • Internet Browser updated
    • hold L/R buttons to fast forward and rewind
    • save and manage passwords
    • capture images from games similar to Animal Crossing: New Leaf capture on 3DS, allowing for social media uploads
  • You can now view PDF files
  • Improved stability of system

So there you have it, folks. Expect to hear more about this update on tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct.

Around the web
  • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Chrome’ll translate that page for ya ;)

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

Google’s Japanese translations are not as good as Romance or Germanic languages. I understand the gist of what it’s saying, but I can’t officially report on things with inaccurate translations.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I suppose. But posting the translation would’ve kept some people happy enough till the real report XD

  • Jon

    Way ahead of you :)

  • Zuxs13

It took me 38 mins to DL (comcast 50MB/s connection) and another 16 mins for it to load to the system. Then you have to do a few user agreements.

    • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

      1 hour

    • Mickey Mouse

38 mins on 50 MB/s?! It only took me 42 mins on a crappy 8Mb/s BT Broadband connection!

  • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

Also, for those of you reporting on the Disqus double posting, the developer is aware of the issue and it’s being worked on. Hopefully it’ll be fixed by tomorrow.

    • Jon

      have you tried google translate?

Not perfect but it seems to do ok for me :)

      • Decker Shado

I just read the entire google translate version of the update… I kept laughing the whole time, as it kept going on and on about “the Wii U Body” and Body this and Body that… I just felt like it was the Reggie translation I tripped across.

        • Erik

Really? I tried it and it came up normal :(

EDIT: Whoops i found it :)

          • Decker Shado

Here’s a “quote” from the update, down by the warnings in my translation:

In addition, the Wii U body was purchased abroad, there could have been modified even if it is described as only in Japan. Please note that if you have made the body updated at Wii U body like this, it may not operate normally.

          • Guest

Yeah i saw that xD I didn’t know i can update my body for the Wii U :)

          • rp17

Obviously, Reggie didn’t think your body was ready enough

          • Guest
          • Einar

            You asked for it

          • Jon

lol, I had similar stuff happen when I did it :)

      • TheGMO808

Yup I just did that, seemed to translate well enough to understand most of it.

    • NextChannelGames

      Thank you!

    • Doctors Tardis

Not only that, but I’m getting double imput boxes….

      • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

It’s being taken care of, per my comment on the article. Developer is aware of it and hopefully it’ll be fixed tomorrow. Just ignore any double comments for now.

      • rp17

Me too. But what’s weird, it’s not really double posting. If you reload the page, one post disappears. But if you delete one before you reload, you are essentially deleting half your post, and your post will remain but say it’s from Guest.

  • NextChannelGames

How much space does it take?

    • Zuxs13

      almost 700 mb

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

It is about 650- 700MB download but chances are it will update mostly existing files on the Wii U so there should be very little extra storage on the Wii U used. Just like a Service Pack for an OS updates mostly existing files (well most of the time)

      • NextChannelGames

ok, i have a black wii u so i won’t need to worry about space right now

        • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

          i have a white with 500 hdd

      • NextChannelGames

        ok

  • Ballzbeard

    Niiiiiiice.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m going to download the update before I get my Limited Edition Zelda for the Wii U. Geez, this last week and the rest of this one are taking FOREVER! WHY COULD THE PHYSICAL VERSIONS NOT COME OUT???
jk, I know that Nintendo wants to increase virtual software sales, but still.

    • LopsidedPasta

This is my comment, but the site just glitched or something. It had my name twice, even though I just entered it once. Then when I deleted one of them, it deleted both and posted it as a guest what gives? Anyway,

Our hero! This is the best thing to happen in awhile. Lets see what tomorrow brings us!

    • Jeffery02

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! What did you do Nintendo?!?!?! What did you just give us?! BEST WII U UPDATE YET!!!!!!!!!

      • Magnus Eriksson

PDF wieving was a pleasant surprise.

        • Jeffery02

Yeah, that was as unexpected as the Wii Fit Trainer in Super Smash Bros. XD

          • Magnus Eriksson

Its really great. Then I can use my pad as a study tool :)

Im very, very, happy with Nintendo now. I think they are getting to that point where it should have been from the beginning. Hopefully people will realize this too, and buy the console. The only minus is that you are unable to use the controller of the pad in Wii Mode.

          • Zakariyya Al-Quran

I wish they could make it like that, maybe add the gamepad so that it registers like a classic controller so i can play mario bros wii on the gampad without the tv

          • Tim van Broekhoven

Uhh, can you controll NSMBW with the Classic Controller?

          • Tim van Broekhoven

Why does everyone want that so badly? I was totally not expecting something like that. Most Wii games aren’t designed to be controlled with normal buttons…

          • Magnus Eriksson

I really dont care about Wii games. I care about my Virtual Console games. Want to play Zelda OoT and MM. Mario Kart, Mario Golf, etc etc. Agree with you about Wii games, although it worked quite good too. :)

          • Tim van Broekhoven

Well, yes. With a Wii Remote it works exellent. But I don’t see it working with gamepad buttons after an update…

          • Magnus Eriksson

I tried Metroid Prime 3 on the pad yesterday. It looked great, so Wii games works pretty well. Although I agree that its better suited for TV because of the motion feature. But take games like Donkey Kong Country Returns or other games that doesnt rely on that feature to much. Its kind of neat. And if you play fighters fron NEO GEO, those look just great. Im happy with this update as it makes the old Virtual Console way more appealing. Now the new VC is just superfluous. I never cared much for the save stats. And the controllers on the pad feels like a minor detail. I wont buy more games on Wii U Virtual Console now as I have many of the best VC games on my Wii section. But I can understand that people disagree with me. Im mostly a retro gamer who likes to play the classics from my childhood. I dont care to much about new games, except the main franchises. Zelda, Metroid, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Sonic, etc. That Nintendo did what they did now changed my view on Wii U totally. I thought it was really bad for a while, now it is quite what I hoped it to be. So Im satisfied personally. Still recognizes the fact that it has som huge flaws, like lacking 3rd P. Lacking games etc. But to me that doesnt matter. Im pretty happy about it now… Loooong text here.

    • AAAkabob

Still no folders, I am dissapoint.

    • Magnus Eriksson

I think this makes the Wii U to what it should have been from the beginning. Im very happy with this update. Hopefully they will make it possible to use the pad fully on Wii mode soon. Next update maybe? Anyway, the Wii U is clearly getting better now.

Edit: By the way. I complained about the lack of this features earlier on this site. Back then everyone called me a stupid troll, idiot, and that I should go fuck myself. Someone even said I was a bad father etc… Well, here the update is. I guess it was possible after all…

      • Guest

lol wow someone called you a bad father??

        • Magnus Eriksson

          Yup :D

  • Pikachief

Not gonna lie, this is gonna get me back into the wii. And I can play my wii virtual console games on it! yes!

  • Guest

Wait, since the Gamepad can be used as a Wii Sensor Bar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=KTLRdP9oOfw)… holy shit: car rides got even more interesting.

    • Cesar Barroso

      good one!

      • Guest

This update just screams many hours of fun with Smash Bros on the road!

    • Stuart Thomas

I never knew this! I can’t believe i didnt know this!

  • Guest

Finally a good new about the WiiU! :D Yeah! :)

  • derty

Holy shit… D: I’ve never wanted to play my wiiu more than ever

    • babulibaba

same dude . . . too bad im grounded till friday

      • derty

Damn man that blows. U should sneak that shit lol

  • sharlo galmo

what will be the suprise for tomorrow???

    • Pikachief

Hopefully N64 VC. I’m guessing no new surprises though. :( We haven’t really had any surprises since E3 and this is still just talking about this year. They can easily fill up a lot of time talking about the update, pokemon, mario party, wii party, Donkey Kong, A Link Between Worlds, Wii Fit U, Wii Sports HD, and Super Mario 3D World.

Actually that sounds like more info than will be in there already lol

    • babulibaba

im hoping for miyamotos new franchise announcement or something about metroid or yarn yoshi.
they might even talk about the new zelda now that wind waker hd is out

      • Pikachief

Its just talk for stuff coming this year though. I mean I’m still hoping for a surprise but I’m not too hopeful

      • DragonSilths

I totally forgot about Miaymoto’s new game….But I dont think we will get anything thats coming next year at tomorrows Direct. But Mario Party Island Tour!!! Hope we get some good stuff on it.

  • Re4wii2008

Thank you nintendo no I can play Wii Games and watch TV! Maybe one day they can map games that use the classic controller to the Gamepad buttons but this is still freaking awesome! I can’t wait for tomorrow’s Direct!

  • Antar Rodríguez

great news, just started my download hopefully next update will let you play wii games that supported gamecube controllers with the wii u pro controller or even with the gamepad buttons

  • Guest

Sweet mother! You can play Wii games on the gamepad now!

    • Kris Pucci

but you still need the wiimote…stupid feature imo.

      • Jon

does that matter? It is still off TV play

        • Kris Pucci

of course it matters…its using the pad as a small tv. wow! if i could use the pad to control the wii games off screen, then that is a great feature.

          • Anna

How are you supposed to play Mario Galaxy with the Gamepad….

          • FutureFox

From what it sounds like by the comments you use the wiimote/nunchunk to point just as you would your large tv. Gamepad basically smaller tv.

          • Anna

I meant because people want to play without the remote, even though that wouldn’t work in a lot of games.

          • Jon

ok…. just wondering because you called it a stupid feature.

      • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

tell me a solution for that?

how you fix the game pad layout?

        • Kris Pucci

the game pad has all the same technology as the wiimote.

          • Anna

How are you supposed to bowl, box, play tennis, or golf with the GamePad? It can’t even handle a game as basic as Wii Sports.

      • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

        ok, let me tell one:
you can tell to the wii emulator that b on the game pad will be the b on the wii mote….
but in most of the game this will be a mess…
well you can configure the control loyaut before running the emulator, could be an option.

  • MetroidZero

Here you go guys…some quick footage of me demonstrating Wii Off-TV Play.

    Subscribe :P

    • babulibaba

im literally flipping shit about this, that is fucking awesome

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

You better wash your hands before you touch that controller.

        • FutureFox

Or get a new spatula…and don’t work for McDs

        • babulibaba

          I almost forgot!nice call

    • MetroidZero

My brother is playing Brawl right now. He’s about 15 feet from the Wii U in another room, and the door is closed. When I came up to the door, the gamepad had connectivity problems. Very fragile connectivity, but I assume Nintendo will fix this in future stability updates.

      • darkcreap

I think that is beyond Nintendo’s control. Take into account that the gamepad uses a high speed WiFi-based connection between the gamepad and the console. In a WiFi connection, bandwidth depends on signal quality, which is mainly influenced by distance. For the WiiU to stream the video successfully, you have to be at a relatively close distance.

It depends very much on your house layout and your house walls. I tried it in two different houses. In one, more modern, it is difficult to have a wide range, because it is newer and therefore the walls are thicker. In the second, the house walls are pretty thin, because the house is way older than the first one, and the range of the gamepad is considerably wider because of that.

Summarising, it is not a software issue but a radio issue. Nothing Nintendo can do software-wise will improve that.

      • Dylan Groot

The gamepad to wii u connection cant be interferred (by walls, doors etc), thats the technology. It won’t get better.

        • Stuart Thomas

just cut a square out of the the drywall. lol (hole in wall gamepad fix ftw!)

        • MetroidZero

Yes, but when I play a Wii U game on another floor, I get better connectivity than playing a Wii game on the gamepad, and this was only like 15 feet away.

        • Magnus Eriksson

No but it could be fixed with extra hardware.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Sounds like a hardware issue. I dont have that problem. It plays excactly like Wii U games.

      • Shota

sorry but that is something that can’t be fixed

    • Sdudyoy

      What’s with the purple lights?

      • Anna

That’s the sensor bar, the light can be seen with cameras.

      • Guest

The camera is picking up the InfaRed from the sensor bar. Try taking a picture of a working remote and the same thing should happen.

        • Sdudyoy

          Thanks for clearing that up!

    • Merrfn

      I just nergasmed a little.

    • SonicLucario

      :)

    • Dylan Groot

Whats the use when you cant even play the games WITH the gamepad. This is just like playing wii games on a very very very small screen, why would you do that.I really dont get it.

      • Sydney Ultrasyd

Well, this way Wii games will look better :D I often unplug my Wii from the big LCD TV to play it on a smaller CRT, looks way better. But yeah, playing with a wiimote (and you must keep the sensor in front of you) on the small gamepad isn’t very excited to me. But it’s possible, so it’s cool.

        • Tim van Broekhoven

You can just use the sensor bar in the Gamepad…

      • Guest

The gamepad wasn’t made when Smash bro or any wii game came out so unless the do a remake it on VC or something i highly doubt that will happen. That’s like asking why can’t you play Wii U games on the wii. But I guess we’ll wait and see. I could be wrong.

        • Magnus Eriksson

Why dont look into facts before making statements like that? Of course it can be done. Its actually very, very easy.

      • Michael DeVore

That’s your view, but for me I wanted this because Wii Fit can take a long time and occupy the TV when other people don’t want to sit and watch a work out for a half hour. However, since Wii Fit U is about out this isn’t nearly as valuable as it would have been at launch.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Hopefully they will fix it with another update. VC games on Wii should atleast have this feature… But OMG it looks soooo much better on the pad. Tried som old NEO GEO games, looked amazing. It would be great to play with the pad alone.

      • Mark

The problem with that is some games rely on the pointing with the WiiMote; it would take a lot of time and effort to reconfigure all the controls to make the GamePad Usable.

      • NintendoNoob

I want it where I don’t need a Wii pro controller to play games. I got MM but don’t have a Wiii pro controller so I can’t play it yet

      • Tim van Broekhoven

Well, just about the same reason why you would play off tv with normal wii u games… When someone watches tv you can still play your games.

    • Guest

I swear, two days ago I played Metroid Prime 2 and was all “ffffuuu why can’t I play only with the gamepad :(

      Nintendo <3

  • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

i was thinking i was the only one to see the update (i go to the update manager just for casuality) and let the wii u updating so i come as fast as i can to tell the people and the post was created.

    dam Ashley King !

  • Re4wii2008

Guy’s I’m Playing Paper Mario on My Wii U Gamepad right now on Wii Mode and it’s even fixed to 4:3 with the pillars on the sides! It’s so awesome I’m gonna be busy for the rest of the night!

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

You can use the gamepad to play the VC right?? Or do you have to use the Wii mote to control?

      • Guest

        wiimote sadly :(

        • Daniel Schwarz

          Oh well… maybe next update…

          • Javy G

If they make the GamePad usable as a Classic Controller, there would be no use for Wii U Vitual Console besides all extra features like saving an exact spot in a game or if they decide to put GameCube games up…BUT it would save a tremendous amount of time from transferring all these VC games and making them available to the Wii U channel.

          • Daniel Schwarz

Eventually, Nintendo will stop supporting the Wii Virtual Console and the Wii U Viritual Console will be the only way to purchase retro games on the platform. So, I think it will be important to people still in the market for retro games, but people who have the games they want from the Wii may be set.

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Well poop… Control from the gamepad would be a wonderful feature for Wii Virtual Console games or any game that supports classic controls like Mario Kart Wii

          • Re4wii2008

Well that might discourage players from buying VC Games on The Wii U Menu or upgrading instead.

        • Aleks

          Very sadly.

      • Nathaniel Lopez

From my understanding, you’d still have to use a Wiimote. The gamepad does not work as a classic control.

    • Mickey Mouse

The pillars are more noticeable on Wii VC and homebrew emulators. I’m guessing it’s because they’re not supposed to be 4:3. Managed to play Super Mario Kart in bed with the gamepad and Wiimote!

    Best Firmware Update Ever!!!!

  • Nicolas Eddowes

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

  • Sdudyoy

What is the point of the Wii U virtual console anymore though?

    • MetroidZero

Lol, I didn’t think about that!

    • babulibaba

on the wii u verison you have miiverse support and can play using the game pad alone rather than the gamepad as a screen and using another controller.
also it has higher res and mappable controls

    • Fred

you don’t have to go through Wii Mode

      • Sdudyoy

True but if you already own the game It’s a small price to pay

        • Fred

It’s different for everyone. I’m now more likely to buy Wii VC titles, but I’m still going to upgrade them when they become available. Especially ones like Star Fox 64 because I don’t have any classic controllers, but I have 4 Pro Controllers and 4-player was my favorite mode in Star Fox so for me $2 is a small price to pay.
Although in truth for me $2 is a small price to pay to not have to do the extra step to go into wii mode especially since I can use the controlls on the gamepad if I play them in Wii U mode.

  • Austin Burn

haha thank god, yesterday i was trying to use youtube and each time my browser froze

  • Mochlum

We’re probably gonna get GBA/64 VC announced tomorrow to release on the eShop. And Wii Off-TV play is pretty cool, Mario Galaxy looks really good on it.

    • Fred

I wish they would have announced one or both of those, but alas they didn’t

    UPDATE FASTER!

  • Guest

I read about a Netflix update then when I went to the app to update it a box opened telling me that a system update was necessary before a software update. I was so excited that this was the fall’s big one I almost fell off my chair. As our favorite plumber would say “wahooooo, here we go.”

    • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

      senti lo mismo

  • TAKANYAN

Took me about three hours total.

    • Fred

really? it only took me 45 minutes

  • Blugrave

You forgot that the browser can save your passwords also.

Also I sent an email but I’d like an article on how Hideki Kamiya tweeted about a Wonder Blue spin off that’ll play sort of like DMC.

  • Guest

I don’t get it. What’s the point of having off screen play if you can’t use the off screen to control it?

  • Michael Hancock

You can play Wii games on the gamepad but you can’t use the gamepad to control them. I don’t get it.

    • sup3rnoah

that would be so awesome if you could.

    • Fred

I’m hoping they’re working on that next. I’d rather have this then nothing and I’m hoping to be able to use gamepad as a classic controller soon

  • Vinicius

    PDF Reader!! Awesome!!!

  • Dimitri Theodosakis

how much faster is Wii U Before Update and After Update?

    • Ice Climbers

About 3 seconds faster. It took about 4-5 seconds to load the Wii U menu before the update. Now it loads in 1-2 seconds.

      • Dimitri Theodosakis

thanks you, i was hope it was 7-8 Seconds faster.

        • Adam

          You can’t have a negative loading speed….

        • Fred

How can it be 7-8 seconds faster if it only took 4-5 seconds?

    • Fred

For me the biggest difference is getting back into the menu before I had to wait for each icon to load 1 at a time. Now they are all immediately up faster then I would get even the 1st one before.

  • Jack5221

Downloading this right now. LOVE how I can now play off t.v with Wii games. I like a good match of smash bros every now and then. Looks like I can finally put my Wii to rest on the shelf with all the other consoles.

  • JB

I love the update!! Wii software looks better on the smaller gamepad screen… Fantastic work Nintendo, but it this update didn’t come without a couple of gripes

    A) Unless I’m missing it somewhere, there’s no folders option for downloads, that’s one big glaring omission, particularly for folks like me who are moving more towards digital. I also have a crap ton of VC and eShop games to organize!

    B) While it’s extremely wonderful I can play Wii software on the Gamepad now (Heck, I don’t care if I need to use Wii Remotes) I wish I could fire up that mode without having to select it on my TV first. Seems like an necessary, extra step.

    • MetroidZero

My brother did this but…he held B on the Gamepad when the Wii U was starting up and it immediately went into Wii Off-TV Play mode. I turned off the TV and he went on playing with my other brother. (Yes, multiplayer off-screen play. They are both playing Brawl right now).

    • Ice Climbers

When loading the Wii U up, press B on the GamePad and it will go straight to Wii Mode.

      • JB

It might be an issue with my TV and the way it handles the HDMI handshake to my console. I’d like to do it with my TV off. Unless it’s on and have my input switched to the Wii U. I get a try again message.

        • Fred

What ice climbers is trying to say is when you first power on your Wii U hold B on either the GamePad or the Wii Remote right after you turn on the console. This has it boot directly into Wii Mode without you having to point the Wii Remote at the tv

          • JB

I understand what Ice is saying clearly and I’m already aware of that step. What I’m saying is that unless I have my TV on and switched to the Wii U input it won’t allow me to go straight to Wii mode without an error message telling me to switch to my TV. I don’t think that’s Nintendo’s doing, but my TV’s. I think it’s my HDMI port. It only connects to any given device when the TV is on and only on the input that’s selected. That’s my guess. My TV is ancient (5 years old lol), so I’m thinking my issue is unique to my TV and maybe doesn’t happen on newer sets… IDK…

Anyone notice the match game you can play when going into the eShop from an icon on the main screen?

    • Anthony K Aurelia

My Disqus is doubling crap on my PC,,,I deleted this comment and it posted as a guest?

    • Fred

Yes I almost won. I matched the first 2, but the eShop loaded before I could finish the last one.

  • atl hawks

I can’t go to ign anymore, is anyone experiencing this too

    • ICHI

      So that’s fixed then :-)

  • Brandon Olson

My one gripe is that I still can’t switch my Nintendo ID account over to a new Wii U. I WANT THAT ZELDA BUNDLE BUT I DON’T WANT TO WASTE MY GAMES I BOUGHT ONLINE DANGIT! :(

This update was pretty sweet though.

    • Jon

you can’t do a system transfer?

      • Fred

you don’t need to read what I wrote above

    • Fred

All you have to do is buy the Zelda Bundle, Connect the new Gamepad to your old Wii U, use the download codes on your old Wii U and then sell your New Wii U AND your old Gamepad. Problem solved you sell the plain gamepad and the wii u with nothing on it and you keep the Wii U with all your stuff and the awesome gamepad.

  • therealruben1

Dang it!I just sent my wii u to get fixed today. Its not reading discs :(

  • Tim van Broekhoven

Wait… Can you really play WII games on the gamepad now? Or did I read it wrong?

    • ItzameyaToad

Yes you can. The only thing is you can’t use the gamepad physical controls you must use a Wii-mote/classic remote, essentially a portable tv that plays your Wii games :).

      • FutureFox

That’s….interesting. Pointing on a smaller screen.

        • ItzameyaToad

Yeah I can see it being weird for certain games or trying to select thing’s, but it is really cool for games like Mario Kart Wii or Smash Bros Brawl.

          • Fred

Or Xenoblade that game is why I’m excited for it.

      • Tim van Broekhoven

Yeah, thats’s what I was expecting… How the hell would you controll Skyward Sword with the gamepad? ;D

  • thesupertomek

And now I’m waiting for Wii U gamepad as Classic Controller support. That’d be fahking sick. Imaging playing older CoD’s on gamepad ^^

  • Suraj Alexander

PDF support. That’s awesome for me, since i use the browser for my work and stuff. The browser keeps getting better and better.

  • Guest
  • Tra Allen

    I’m so excited

  • Petri

    Nice list of updates.
But still more things they could fix.
I hope this is not the big update we have been waiting for.

    • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

they need to keep working but it’s a big update.

      • Petri

Yes, but is it the update they announced a while back?
At least they didn’t say like with the 1st announced update.

    • Revolution5268

      it is the big update.

      • Petri

Then it would be a mild disappointment.
But it’s cool, I like my Wii U as it is, and I trust them to only improve it in the future.

  • darkcreap

Regarding loading screens, I did not see any significant difference. I would have to measure it to know if there is any improvement, but my subjective perception is that they have not addresed that.

If we could use the gamepad buttons as a Wii classic controller that would be the icing of the cake. Games that work with the classic controller would be completely playable with the gamepad only. And that would be great.

I guess it is way easier now to do these things since the Wii mode is emulated. The problem with the Wii was that the Gamecube part and the Wii part were completely separated in terms of hardware. When you entered the Gamecube mode, you could not access any features of the Wii mode and vice versa.

But since the Wii is emulated in the WiiU, I think it is plausible that they could implement it so the WiiU gamepad could be recognised as a Wii-mote with a classic controller plugged to it, although I don’t know how complicated this could be. If they could implement off TV play in Wii mode, it is clear that there are more tricks that you can do in the software. Actually, if you touch anything on the gamepad while in Wii mode, you see a small message on the screen saying that you cannot use the gamepad to control Wii games. That clearly indicates that the gamepad can send input to the console in Wii mode.

    • Fred

      Mine loads significantly faster.

I love Wii off-tv play, and I’m glad we have it now, but I also hope that they’re working on giving the GamePad Classic Controller functionality and I hope that they don’t stop there. I don’t own any classic controllers but I do own 4 pro controllers and the VC version of Star Fox 64 so I’m hoping they make Pro Controllers compatible with Wii mode

  • Skelterz

what’s it mean now you can use a headset in the gamepad for chat i don’t have a wii u im getting one soon but coulden’t you do that anyway …or is there like a private chat feature now or like party chat?

    • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

the gamepad have a integrated mic. in the previews update you cant use a head set mic for chat, now you can.

      • Fred

Yes you could. I used to do it while I played Trine 2 with my buddy.

  • Aleks

Soooo pleasantly surprised at the Wii games on gamepad! AWESOME idea!…… Until i read that I can only use the Wii controller. Why am I not surprised? What in pointless hell is the point? To play on the smallest screen money can buy while sitting in front of your tv where, chances are, your sensor bar is neatly placed? Im gonna go update, confirm and give it a shot now, but im pretty sure its gonna be another “what if” moment where they could have added a GREAT-BIG-GIANT amazing functionality to the WiiU, but instead, and as usual, chose NOT to and are going to pretend that it’s a good idea. I am not waving a Wii controller and nunchuk WHILE somehow holding my tiny gamepad screen WHILE sitting in front of my big screen tv to play anything. I am ZERO percent interested in this. It is pointless and is frankly very irritating. Of all the things to fix or improve, THIS is what they opt to spend resources on. Good job. Next, why dont you make the gamepad a cel phone that can call someone only within 10 ft or let us play gamecube games on the gamepad ONLY and not your TV but you have to use the wii controllers. Yea. Spend valuable time doing that.

    • Aleks

Yup. Checked it out. It is as bad as I thought. Ridiculous idea. All I really wanted from this update- and what we ALL expected- was faster loading etc. Guess what? NOPE. The “improvement” list may appear long, but its just vacuous and, personally, offers this gamer nothing. Please, please, please give me something to look forward to in the Direct coming up so i forget this disappointment.

      • Jon

I played Mario Galaxy while watching Netflix… I didn’t need to even hold my gamepad, it is called the cradle. Also, my YouTube channel didn’t crash my Wii U. So the stability has improved. And if you are going to play gamecube games, won’t you be using the classic controller anyway? Also, load times seem to be a bit faster.

        • Aleks

Glad it works for your purposes. The Gamecube part was a joke. Point was that it’s unnecessarily complicated. Easy is good. Waving around Wii controllers while playing a game on a small screen WiiU controller, 8 ft in front of your big screen TV, is NOT going to have people running out to buy a WiiU. I was offended that they seem to continue to waste this fans time. Love Nintendo GAMES, but whoever is putting teams on pointless errands like these, needs to get a turtle shell to the face. Once the system is perfected and speedy and full of games (looking at you Virtual Console), THEN you can waste time adding functionality 10 people would ever use. Until then, do something worthwhile!
If the Direct boasts anything stupid like I can now use Wii controllers on a 3DS, or talks about Pokemon for more than 3 minutes I’m throwing all my Nintendo stuff out the window. I’ve had it! (unless they give me Mario 3 today lol)- frustrated fan.

          • Fred

I talked to some of my friends already and I can assure you that more than 10 people will use this and I’m one of them. Especially since my wife likes to watch X Factor and The Voice while I want to play Xenoblade. This makes it possible for both of us to do what we want at the same time. I LOVE this new functionality and several buddies of mine love it too. Yes it would be nice if you could use the gamepad as a classic controller and hopefully that’ll be the case in the future, but I’d rather this than nothing.

          • Aleks

Happy for you guys. Fingers crossed for gamepad controls sooner rather than later.

      • Fred

What are you talking about? My system is significantly faster now.

        • Aleks

          Well then lets trade.

          • Fred

Sorry, but I’ve been buying my games digitally so unless you’re willing to pay enough on top so that i can buy them again it’ll be a loss for me.

    • wober2

Disappointing that they bury wii games in an app and disappointing that the controller does not work with the wii. At least gamecube showed on the dashboard on the wii. These little enhancements a year ago would of made the wiiu an easy upgrade for wii owners… I am getting the feeling they are strained for development resources…

    • Fred

I love this functionality. Last night I played Super Mario Bros 3 like this. Starting tonight I’ll be playing Xenoblade on the gamepad while my wife watches The Voice on our TV.

    • C4

Well, it makes sense that it still supports the Wii Remotes.

Adding GamePad functionality by simulating Wii Remote + Nunchuck / Classic Controller input requires additional time and work by Nintendo. I really hope it will be in one of the next updates, since it would make that feature useful, but i wouldn’t expect it…

      • Fred

I disagree, I don’t mind that it’s not there now, as it takes time, but i do expect it eventually

  • Christopher Smith

    I like this update.

“You can now use a headset connected to the Wii U GamePad for chat”

    Can somebody explain this?

I think we can already do this.

    • Fred

You’re correct I’ve done that multiple time on Trine 2. So I’d also like an explanation. I’m hoping this will allow it during all games including Sonic Racing.

      • bizzy gie

Does it mean you can use the GamePad mic as long as you have headphones plugged in?

        • Fred

In Trine 2 you have always been able to chat using either mic in the gamepad or mic in your headphones, but I don’t know about headphones to hear and gamepad mic for speaking.
I’m just hoping it adds chat for all online games including Sonic Racing that’s where I’d really like to see it.

    • http://exazblog.blogspot.com/ Prince_AKR

While it was available for games, it was unavailable for the “Wii U Chat” app. That’s what it means.

  • wober2

IS this the big update? Is this the “summer update”?

    • Jon

      probably, pretty sweet.

    • Fred

Yes my wii u is faster

  • Razo_E

Wow! I was just going to post asking “Whatever happened to that 2nd update?” and BLAM-O, here it is! I’ll update as soon as I get home. Can’t wait!

  • Wren Justin Umlauf

-Users can choose to output sound through an HDMI cable, non-HDMI cable, or both cables at the same time
Apparently this is another feature. Could be very useful for those that use computer monitors to play on

  • David Argueta

even if it takes a long time for the next update, they will make the gamepad controls compatible with the off-screen wii software functionality. at least Nintendo still included backwards compatibility with the new system and it is getting better, sure it is taking a long time but improvement is improvement either way. we just have to keep posting feedback so they can work on the improvements all gamers want.

  • Møhåmmęd Jårmøn

What are PDF files? And the part under Internet browser taking gameplay snapshots??? How does that work?

  • Møhåmmęd Jårmøn

And WHEN can we use Gamepad chat? Anytime? Or just with certain games?

    • Fred

That’s what I want to know too. Can I use it while playing Sonic Racing? You could already do this in Trine 2 will this make itpossible for everything else?

  • Ace J

anyone posting a comment from thier wii u notice anything new??? :)

  • Logan Waltz

    Fucking righteous update.

  • C4

“capture images from games similar to Animal Crossing: New Leaf capture on 3DS, allowing for social media uploads”

How exactly does this work? Is it still 480p like the current Snapshot function?

    • C4

Looks like it captures higher resolution but you need an account on either Twitter, Facebook or Flicker as far as I can see to use the feature, or others which support file upload.

  • that guy

GUYS plz help! i downloaded the update and now it’s say on youtube that every video i watch say it is unavailable on the device.

  • Rombosjan

    I cant watch videos…!!!!!

  • Guest

    Enjoying the update so far.

Wii Mode ~ Off-TV Play is awesome! Games actually look a little bit better on the Gamepad’s screen, probably due to the fact that they’re SD games and have a small pixel count, so it should look better on a smaller screen vs. a bigger one. It bites that you can’t use the Gamepad’s control as some sort of alternate Classic Controller, nor does this work well for multiplayer sessions, but I’m glad they added it.

Internet Browser YouTube freezing also seems to be gone now (finally!).

    Thanks Nintendo.

  • Tim van Broekhoven

Can you play Wii virtual console games in this mode?

    • Fred

Yes I’ve played Super Mario Bros 3 like this works fine.

      • Tim van Broekhoven

Ok :) That’s great. Gonna play some OoT on my gamepad now:)

        • Fred

Just remember you’ll have to use a classic controller

  • bizzy gie

We can now add screenshots on Disqus with Wii U via the dedicated picture button.

  • Ryan Goetz

I also noticed that in wii mode, the screen will automatically change the aspect ratio to match the game now.

  • hammy

I had no doubts from the wii u’s start!

  • hammy

Can’t what to play ssbb on game pad but the only thing to make this better is if the games that us the classic controller can be played with just the gamepad.

  • Shermon MK-1

My gripe is that you still have to use the sensor bar with the gamepad…you have to find some place where the sensor bar works and you can see the screen…v_v

    • Shermon MK-1

At least, the game I played or the setting I was on didn’t support it…if theres a sensor bar on the gamepad…I would like to know how to turn it on…
