Here’s a side by side comparison of Wind Waker on GC and Wii U

Until now we’ve seen various screenshots of how the development of the Wind Waker HD remake has turned out, but no direct footage linked to the original GameCube version. That’s changed with the above video, as you can see the two running side by side and the improvements in the new version are very noticeable. It’s interesting to note the small details that come through, such as the two-tone colors of the blades of grass, but the sky in the original GameCube version looks much better to me.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Ign also has a comparison video

      • tooby77

Indeed they have. Love the haters on my comment. U dont even know…. Let me formulate me difference. “Give me more? Amazing

    • Marcus Navarro

Idk what else you were expecting from a graphical comparison…

    • Elitepwnsface

Thats all? Yup. Those graphics have changed quite a bit. The lighting and shadows, crisper edges. This just makes my preorder of the gamestop exclusive so much more golden.

  • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

    Love my Wiiu

    • Jack5221

I LOVE WII U! YES I DO! I LOVE WII U MORE THAN YOU!

      • Razo_E

We love Wii U more than you love Wii U, but not as much as we love you.

        • Tim van Broekhoven

          Wii love U, Wii U!!!

      • CMB

        U*

  • Kevin Sepulveda

The Wii U has turned an already nice looking game into a beautiful one.

  • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

Good thing Windwaker HD is offering more than just a graphical tuneup. Windwaker GC still holds up well, and if it weren’t for the additional tweaks for Windwaker HD, I would not have bought it.

  • Flip Macleod

Quite the upgrade in many departments. I’m pretty excited, I’ve yet to have the chance in playing this game so it will all be a new experience to me!

  • Marcus Navarro

The haziness from the sea breeze, the sharpness, the shading, the realistic lighting, the more blended palette, the way that the cartoonish art style and realistic elements meld together…aesthetic quality through the roof…

    ;_;7 Salute the Nintendo

    • TULFich

this is how HD versions should be made, not just damn resolution, Nintendo knows how to do it!

      • Arthur Jarret

Talking about HD: Peach is now officially confirmed for SSB4 (of course, we all knew it would be coming) – and she looks better than ever!

And… I’m replying to you only because you were near the top of the comments :P

    • Magnus Eriksson

I was actually a bit surprised that the differences wasnt bigger. Not that it matters because the GCN version looked great. But I thought they had changed more than they had. I just saw that the light looked more shining and therefore brighter colours. But none of the models or characters seemed changed or upgraded. This is not a complain, I find good reason not to do such changes.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I think Wind Waker was fine before it’s HD remake. It’s a nice change, but it wasn’t a necessary one.

        • Baum 「ツリー」

it WAS necessary because Aonuma wanted to let more people enjoy the most underrated game in the whole series…

          • Denvy

That would be Majora’s Mask. Not Wind Waker

          • Magnus Eriksson

Zelda II got some hate too. But it gave the series a new perspective that I think pushed it in the right direction.

        • Magnus Eriksson

How is it possible to get 5 downloads for a comment were you say that it was that great title that really didnt need change? Nintyfans (some) are touchy.

    • disqus_sgtob6da3X

      Gamexplain….I love those guys!

  • http://wiiudaily.com/ Monomon

It looks really nicccccccccce!I wanna BUY IT!NOW!NINTENDO,YOU HEARD ME!

  • Guest

I don’t trust this article by Ashley King i will not agree to this at all and i did not watch it all the way through so i do not want to see it and never played the gamecube version though. I’ve seen the difference or comparison before and was awesome but this one was really bad and that’s not gonna change my mind. Looking forward to it

  • Denvy

Not convinced this is worth 50 bucks to experience, nonetheless, it DOES make me want to play it again. Think I’ll hook up my Cube :)

    • FoxMulder900

If you hook up your GameCube to an HD tv you simply will not enjoy this game as much as you would by picking up the remake.

      • Denvy

Which I why I would never hook it up to a HDTV. I don’t think the 50 bucks is worth it to play a game I already own (and love).

        • FoxMulder900

That’s fair, my GameCube is the only reason I keep an SD tv around lol. (Although I will still be picking up the remake, no questions asked)

          • Denvy

I keep an SDTV around for lots of consoles. I’m a collector of sorts. Can’t abandon the CRT or I won’t be able to play a lot of my all time favorites.

  • FrankDaddyGoodz

I am impressed. Watch the video in 1080 and you will definitely see the difference.

  • Gotallofthem

To bad many will lose out on playing an amazing game; they refuse to buy the U and its great game. They have been brain washed into thinking Nintendo is only for kids and purchasing one of the systems will make them look like “kids” among their BF & COD friends.

    • Denvy

On the contrary, over 4 million people have already experienced this game

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I would say most of them have, and I’m sure they’ll eat it up all over again despite it just being remastered in HD.

        • Denvy

I see that as the case as well. It’s one of my favorites in the series too. I’d just rather a new game this Christmas at that price point.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Agreed.

        • Mike A

So true and I will be one of them but not until price goes down. Love the game but more I see and read about the “new” HD version made me realize its not worth $50 for me. I already finished it many times. Saving my money for new Donkey Kong.

I have DK Country for Wii and finish it all. I got sucker in and still brought it for 3DS….never again will I fall for this money scheme, at least I will try not to lol. Nintendo, I just want a new drug to enjoy not the same drug wrapped in pretty packaging. Been there, done that!

      • reyn69sharla

oi shulk, what are you doin here, lets go smash some mechon.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Or some have grown out of Nintendo and don’t see all their games as fun? Besides, not all people my age play BF and CoD, that’s just the stereotype that most Nintendo fans seem to think is the case. Lol.

      • Jon

what is your age? I just got off BF3 and most of my team sound 15 and under.

  • Matt Lambourne

    Looks incredible. GJ Nintendo.

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

One thing i noticed, was that the bosses in the HD remake are proably the biggest graphical remake of this game, the lava/magma on the HD remake looks alot more like lava, and the boss looked very fluid and somehow interactive with the zelda world, its hard to describe. Buying this remake will definatly be worth my money.

  • Aleks

I said it before and will say it again, i LOVE the new clarity…. BUT, I absolutely prefer the boldness of the colors in the original. The blues, reds, golds.. in fact EVERY color in the side by side comparison had so much more POW in it (please see the golden, lava caterpillar boss fight at 4:20). The HD version colors appear muted in every single comparison video i’ve yet seen. I will be buying this and will love the smoothness and clarity, BUT i will be cursing the color decisions and that pervasive foggy bloom crap, or as some like to defend it, the “beach haze” :P I’ll be glad to have it, though, either way.

    • RyuNoHadouken

i was thinking the same thing about the colors

    • Tekina Sibawo

I see what you mean, though you could also argue that in the original the colors were oversaturated because the console couldn’t produce the HD smoothness. For the most part I think HD version is superb…though I do miss the shinyness from the lava caterpillar boss.

    • TheWinds

Maybe they did that to make it seem like everything has been sun bleached by the constant use on the sea?

      • Aleks

No. Not buying that cop-out excuse. Not even a little.

        • Castamere

It’s salty air. It looks exactly as it’s supposed to.

          • Aleks

It’s an audio/VISUAL game. A fantasy game that doesn’t have to play by every real-life rule. You don’t need mist. If it is, in fact, NOT a system inadequacy, then make it an option we can turn way, way OFF.

          • Sol Ridgeway

I want to be able to turn that crap off, not just down, but it is in the cut scenes, so I doubt we will be able to do it.

          • Aleks

Gd point. Guess i will have to continue to wait for an A+ Nintendo homerun. (Been a minute).

    • Mike A

Yeah I agree with you and I’m glad I’m not only one who feels same. I actually thought when the video showed title screen at beginning that the GameCube version was the HD for WiiU. It wasn’t until I notice the HD in the title that I knew the difference.

      • Aleks

lol, I totally thought the same thing- i immediately was drawn to the brightness of the right video and then thought… wait why does that one on the left say HD :(( LOL. I’m sure in real life the smoothness is silky and sharp, but I will definitely miss the original knock-out colors.

    • Aleks

Glad to not be alone on this. i’m a fan… not a fanatic. This will not
be perfect. I will be buying this, but i’m not going to pretend it’s
unbelivafamazeballs just because its made by Nintendo. Colors are a let down.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        My thoughts exactly.

    • nintendope

I used to love Gomma’s art style, with the contrast in his colors, now is like.. washed out… I will buy the game, but to me, this HD version wont make the original one completly irrelevant, i’ll got back to my GC version from time to time

  • Christopher Acuna

“SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!” Has never been so relevant to me until now. Lol. At least not until the next Zelda game or a new Metroid game lol

  • incoherent1

I never played the original, and am surprised how well it holds up in the comparison. The new one looks gorgeous, don’t get me wrong!

    • Denvy

If you’ve never even played the original, this will probably be the time to do so :)

      • incoherent1

        I plan on it — can’t wait!

  • RyuNoHadouken

colors are more rich in the original

  • Jack5221

Just seeing how amazing WW looks in HD makes me want Twilight Princess in HD!

    • Baum 「ツリー」

YES! I read about that interview today and I got excited just thinking about my favourite Zelda in HD :3

All those (already gorgeous in the original) particles in the Twili Realm and imagening “the Battle on the Bridge” or the fight against King Bulblin in the burning stales gets me wet xDD

      • Tim van Broekhoven

Aww yes… And imagine exploring hyrule field in HD or on the gamepad alone! You made me excited ;)

        • Baum 「ツリー」

You still have this creepy pic? :P

          • Tim van Broekhoven

            Hehe, yup. Why?

    • Madmagican

I really just want a Majora’s Mask remake in HD

      • Igor

Could say the same. To be true, I don’t like lot’s and lot’s of the same on different plataforms, like it happened with OoT. But I’d make and exception for Majora’s IF (and here’s a really big “if”) they were to do something in the asthetics of that “remake” short video on clock tower that was showed couple years ago or something like that. The one that showed the guy with lot’s of masks on his backpack.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I think that’s what most wanted to begin with.

        • Baum 「ツリー」

I don’t think many people want it…the ones, who’re crying for the remake are just the “loudest”.

I always loved the story of MM…and hated the gameplay! I think it was ridiculous how much you had to remember every time you resetted the 3 days. I played through the whole game, but in the end I just played it because I wanted to know how the story proceeds and that should NEVER be how you play a game. Especially when the characters and the setting are so damn promissing (and admittedly well done in the game itself. Until you have to restart the cycle again)

      • Magnus Eriksson

I think it would have been even better move. There is many people who never played it. And its actually kind of great. But probably to expensive to remake.

  • Tekina Sibawo

I’m blown away. It looks marvelous

  • Nintendofreak

i never realized how shadow less ww was until today

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Wow this comparision really comes to it’s right, the difference isn’t just a HD remake indeed, it seems more like a complete overhaul. As for the skies looking better in GC version according Ashley I think it’s a personal preference, for me I like the skies in WiiU version way more then GC, the clouds seem to be far more realistically (cartoon style) shaped. The GC version seems like these simple clouds we used to draw when we where kid’s while the WiiU clouds look much more as the real thing. But that is my opinion, the comparison puts WWHD in a different light for me, I might consider afterall to get the WiiU wwHD bundle.

On a side note, I love Game explain They Always doe awesome job, only the guy speaks really fast (much like me, I too have that curse/or gift depend on how you look at it:P)

  • mr.Goodbar

WTF! Where’s the HD? Looks like they just added hot fuzz.. thank goodness it will only be 49.99

    • Denvy

Only? I think it should be priced a little lower than that.

      • Denvy

Really? A down vote for wishing a ten year old game were a little cheaper? Heck, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD is TWO games and will go for $39.99. I’d be happy if Windwaker Settled in at about the same. I’d actually consider getting it.

        • Fred

I agree with you. at $40 I’d get it for sure, at $50 I haven’t decided yet.
Although, if I buy it on the eShop I’ll get $5 back so now we’re at $45

          • Joey

I am pre-ordering it still, as i never played the original Gamecube version though…

          • Fred

pre-ordering it? If I get it, I’ll get it on the eShop so that I can have it 2 weeks early

        • Schultz38

Sadly, even though I’m a huge Zelda fan, I too am unsure about purchasing because of the price.

It’s nice for everyone who didn’t get the chance to play it 10 years ago though.

          • Denvy

If this actually had some unique added content over the original (ie, the fabled unused dungeon(s), I’d fork over the cash. But for mainly a graphical and some audio overhaul with a few things cleans up, doesn’t seem worth it for a 10 year old game. I’d rather save my cash for new games this Christmas.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t do remakes unless they have some type of new content that makes it worth the purchase price.

          • Denvy

I generally feel the same. I think the only remake I’ve ever bought was the remake of Final Fantasy for PS1 (Final Fantasy Origins). It was a substantial overhaul AND included II. Add a $20 price point and I was sold.

          • Schultz38

Exactly. No new content + minimum wage-part time job + high price tag = no WWHD for me.

There are a good bit of other Wii U games I’m personally more interested in. Not to mention Pokemon and A Link Between Worlds in 1-2 months for my 3DS (and a handful of other great ones coming out).

Then there’s my PC, PSP (yes, I’m still trying to get games for it), and PS3. And hopefully a PS4 in the near future. So yeah, I just can’t justify a remake right now.

It would look awfully pretty sitting on my game shelf though haha.

          • Denvy

Don’t worry, we’ll see a good “sale” eventually! Ok, I deserve a down vote for a bad pun :D

        • Daniel Gonzalez

It’s a Nintendo driven site dude, expect the downvotes when you talk anything negative about Nintendo and it’s games. I take my downvotes with pride, and can care less what the die hard fanboys think. Ignore them and stick to your guns. :)

      • mr.Goodbar

I hear ya. 29.99 sounds about right for an already made game.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

It should be no more than $39.99 in my opinion.

    • ICHI

Really!? Either you haven’t turned up the resolution on you tube or you need glasses, it looks gorgeous. The way the islands aren’t just shadows in the distance and the new textures on the backgrounds look really nice. Although it’s an old game dolled up; its a great old game, and looks better for the up-scaling and extra work gone into the presentation. I shall be picking up day one to play through again :)

      • mr.Goodbar

Not impressed. But will be downloading

  • Santanata

colors are better in original and it’s still 30fps? what a shame

  • Ernie Sanguyo

Everytime i hear that ocean theme it alwys makes me wants to play zelda lol.

  • AAAkabob

Definitely sharper, but nothing ground breaking. Still I want this game pretty bad lol

  • bizzy gie

Gamecube had better coloring. Wii U had better everything else! :D

    • Tim van Broekhoven

Yes, somehow the colours on Wii Ui look a bit washed out or something.

    • CaesarGood

Idk, might just be the tv…

    • Tecpedz94

According to NobodyXIV (youtube channel) a comment posted on the video above.

“For those saying the colors are washed out in the HD
remaster, you need to remember that the Wii U footage comes out really
washed out on capturing devices due to its limited RGB range. Go watch
any video of Wii U footage, you’ll see the problem on 99% of the videos.”

“Had the chance to try Wind Waker HD and gotta say that the game
looks amazing in person, the colors actually pop more in the HD version
      from what I played.”

      NobodyXIV

      • Gabe Hoffman

I would agree many who have had hands on time with the game have said that the videos don’t do it justice

      • david jarman

Thank you! I’ve been trying to say that. I have the gc version and have played the HD and watching it on videos don’t even give right impression or comparison. It just doesn’t.

      • Aleks

I would love that, and look forward to that being true. i don’t understand, though, why then do they look better on video taken from GC game? Why does it only apply to the “better” version? Theres plenty of vid of all sorts of other games looking spectacular. i find it hard to believe it only applies to this game on this system.

        • Ben English

It’s not just this game. The Wii U for some reason puts out a limited color range when using HDMI cables. If you use component cables it will be fine.

    • Cutcopy

I think it also has to do with the lighting and shadow effects. There is much more of a glow and bloom with the HD version, whereas the GC version couldn’t produce that many shadows and advanced lighting.

I do prefer the sky on the HD version. It’s a lot more dynamic. The GC one seems more flat.

  • skyloft87

I agree with Ashley about the sky. I think the GC version just fits the style better but it all looks great!

    • http://MacroManJr.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

The rich vibrancy of the original Wind Waker was half its charm, if you ask me. When Wind Waker came out, there weren’t a single game to match its vivid, lively world. And it only looks more desaturated merely because they laid the bloom effect in the lighting on a bit too thick. Had they toned it down a little, it would’ve retained more of the original vibrancy. I can’t believe no one in editing cared to make that adjustment.

  • beerkin

The colors on the GC are much more vivid……the Wii U version looks washed out. I hope its just the video player and the game will look amazing on my 240Hz LED, cause on my computer it doesn’t impress. I hate to say it but the damn GC version looks better. What in the hell?!?!?!

  • Starfoxguy

Looks amazing! You can tell the sun is in the game. lol

  • Christopher Coonan

I find the original’s vibrancy to be much better than the washed appearance of the new one, but the new one does look better overall (as expected).

  • Ganjabriel Del Campo

i like The wind waker but ill love to play the ocarina of time in the wii U instead! I’m still thinking if getting this game or not. For me ocarina of time has been the best Zelda game ever!!!

  • SleepySkullhead

I remember I nearly had a heart failure when I first saw the announcement for this.

  • Razo_E

Can’t wait to play this game! This is the only Zelda I haven’t played (aside from the lame Non-Nintendo ones) I just never got the chance to. The graphics are great! It’s like comparing a pixel based image against a vector image.

  • Mike A

The sky sucks on the WiiU version compare to GameCube…disappointed in the video. So anyway I had the game for My GameCube and loved it and I’m sure I will love it on my WiiU.

  • Schultz38

    Color me impressed.

…Or the new HD colors. Either way.

  • Playstation One U

I am SO happy I preordered the bundle.

  • Tim van Broekhoven

Hello! :) I’m Luffy, Monkey D. luffy hehe

    • Luffy

      impostor!

      • Tim van Broekhoven

        Lol! What?

  • Tim van Broekhoven

Hmmm I don’t like the colours in the forsaken fortress… It looks not as dark as in the orininal. That was a lot better.

  • Lee

Colour look much better on the Gamecube version to be honest, there’s a constant mist on the Wii U version which makes the colour very saturated. Not impressed so far. Although the texture quality is much more clear which is to be expected I suppose.

  • Magnus Eriksson

It look almost as good as on Dolphin Emulator now. Good work Nintendo! Its impressing that this actually can be done on a console on pair with last gen tech. :)

  • companyoflosers

wind waker had this weird thing i noticed with really blurred graphics unless you got up really close in the gamecube version, even for standard definition it seems pretty bad.

    • Michael Bolewski

ten years back then things were different and I remember still being by pretty starstruck by the visuals. Hell, the music almost makes me shed a tear remembering playing the story. But that’s why it’s so hard to spend that much money on that kind of hd remake since I remember every nuisance and memorable moment of the game, even after such a long time considering it’s been such a remarkable experience, for me personally at least. Also hate nintendo for giving out review copies that early, not even getting such a treatment from EA nowadays anymore.

      • companyoflosers

well no, even back in the day i remember comparing it to other games and the outlines of things not even that far away blurred like crazy.

        • Michael Bolewski

You really think so? I dunno, used to be very strict about graphical improvement and by the time they released wind waker, I felt it was really “stretching the horizon” :D

          • companyoflosers

its not so much a graphics problem so much as a rendering problem. i see no reason the edges of objects on screen couldnt be reasonably sharper. things arent that blurry in past games or in twilight princess

  • NintendoMan

Everything about the Wii U version is better. Even the sky.

  • Rich Garriques

    WOW huge difference!

  • MARIO’SMOUSTACH

I know this is not related, but i made this new Wii U website today, it is called

    http://wiiuland.wordpress.com/

  • Will (ishigum)

…I drooled a bit. This with Sonic and Mario coming up this year… I think I’ll have enough to occupy my time until the 2014 beasts come out.

  • bobbybangin

The HD version pretty much looks like it does on my Dolphin emulator on the highest settings. I have an i7, 660 TI, and 24 GB ram.

  • That dude

they should of gave that game for free at launch or 20$

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t know about free, but $30 for a 10 year old game that’s just remade in HD sounds more reasonable.

      • http://MacroManJr.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

Exactly. I love Wind Waker, but there’s no way in the world this HD version should cost the exact same price it cost 11 years ago. I hope Nintendo has sense enough to suggest a retail value for the game of about $30, like most other remakes.

  • Michael Bolewski

god, that looks so gorgeous, I really wanna play it but considering I can palpably still sense how it feels to play the game, since it’s been quite an remarkable experience, even ten years back then, it’ll not change the story and 50 bucks is a pretty hefty investment. They should give people discounts who already own the original game, especially the limited edition, the heck.

  • Merrfn

Looks beautiful. Can’t wait to get my hands on it.

  • Grulnork

Looks good, but 60 euro is not a good price :(

  • oontz

Wiiu version looks really washed out. Still going to buy it.

  • manowaffles

I liked the stronger Primary colors in the original version better, but I have no qualms about getting this in another 8 days. I hope they do a midnight release on the eShop.

  • guest

Looks like Nintendo finally discovered bloom.

    Welcome to 2004 LOL

    • Ben English

Have you played Twilight Princess? It’s got bloom out the ass.

If they give it an HD makeover they’ll need to *reduce* the bloom.

  • Aleks

Heres another little something missing totally from the WiiU version that was in the GC version (on the rt) :(

  • Kev

They did a great job bringing the environment to life on Wii U. It’s like I can feel the sun’s heat through my tv with all the details they’ve added. This gives me full confidence in Nintendo when it comes to remaking games in HD.

  • catsby

I really want this but the price tag will probably scare me away since I aready played it alot of times on GC.

Looks so much more natural. I never liked the art style on the cube so I never bought it. I suspected they exaggerated everything so that the player could tell it apart and I was right. This is how it was meant to look. I’m so buying this.

is it just me or does the contrast on the Gamecube look better sometimes?

This doesn’t surprise me at all. As soon as I saw their reliance on the bloom effect in the very first snapshots released of this remake, I knew game’s original color balance would suffer. That’s one reason I was so vocal on the issue of this remake’s atmospheric lighting (though bloom effect) turned up. It’s an easy way to make the game look visually “striking” but it comes at the cost of drowning out the original saturation of colors. I see this all the time as a Unity/UDK developer.

The HD version definitely looks more sharp and clear as I would expect. But I much like the coloring better in the original Gamecube version of that comparison. The remake just looks all washed out.

I’m rather astonished, 90% of the time I preferred the Gamecube version to the WiiU. The colors were so much more vibrant, and it had much darker blacks. In the HD one, the title screen Outset Island flyover was hazy. Shouldn’t it have more definition, not less? Windfall in general looked better in HD, but the sky and sea in my opinion looked so much better with the deeper blues. I was really excited for the HD version, but the colors, to me, are inferior.

I wish Nintendo would have announced the Zelda console bundle sooner!! I would’ve had one for sure. Theirs no way im gonna be able to afford one before they are all sold out.. :(

Why are the colors more washed out with the Wii U version than the original GameCube version? As someone who deals with game engines all the time, I know why–it’s because that’s a result of the lighting’s bloom effect.

Bloom effect will remove saturation from your colors the stronger you use it. The haze effect it produces will make your colors appear more faded and reduces your detail clarity in favor of producing an atmospheric lighting effect.

In other words, tone down the bloom effect, Nintendo. Take away the rich saturated colors of Wind Waker, and you’ve lost half its original charm.

      Oh, and by the way…

      …Called it!

Honestly, I have mixed feelings. Obviously the Wii U version is sharper being in HD & widescreen. However I think the GameCube version still has better contrast and in some cases better lighting /self-shadowing like on Link for example. The HD version has a washed-out look a lot of the time.

are you saying this because Sony and Microsoft are too lazy to make their own games and that Nintendo makes amazing games?
