New Mario & Luigi Wii U bundle replaces Nintendo Land bundle

mario_luigi_wii_u_premium_pack

Earlier this month we told you about a new Wii U bundle that popped up in advertising in Europe. This new bundle includes New Super Mario Bros. U, as well as the DLC Nintendo released for it, New Super Luigi U. This bundle includes both pieces of content on one disk, making it a great entry point for those who haven’t bought a Wii U yet.

This new bundle will completely replace the Nintendo Land SKU that has been available since the launch of the console. For those who still want to experience the multiplayer fun to be had in that game, it can be purchased standalone for $29.99, or downloaded from the eShop for the same price starting on November 1st. According to Scott Moffitt, this SKU shift is part of Nintendo’s commitment to providing value to consumers.

“This new Wii U configuration gives people instant access to not one, but two of the most well-received Wii U games. It’s another example of the tremendous value and variety that Nintendo is offering consumers this holiday season.”

What do you think of the new SKUs? Do you wish you had waited to purchase a Wii U, or will this make you more likely to purchase a Wii U this holiday season? Let us know in the comments.

    A wonderful bundle :-)

  • Nuno

It would be amazing if it included one of the Mario/Luigi Wiimotes.

  • Nintenjoe82

Shame Nintendoland hasn’t taken off massively. It’s a great game let down by some terrible games that come with it.

    • Thomas Fitzgibbon

Namely the tedious Octopus Dance, the repetitive snoozefest of Pikmin Adventure, the overly difficult and awkward Twister Race and the poor design choice of Fruit Cart and Balloon Trip Breeze – those 2 should have been progressive in gameplay style rather than high-score titles). All the others not mentioned on the list are brilliant in my opinion. Zelda and Metroid FTW!

      • Gregg

Pikimin is fun with 4 people. We play a lot….

      • Nintenjoe82

I didn’t think the F-Zero game was difficult but played it with plenty of people that did. I thought it was far too easy, really badly designed and very light on content. I would have preferred F-Zero to have been a basic racer with up to 5 players and a few tracks. I thought Luigi and Mario were perfect but Animal Crossing didn’t need to be there.
I enjoyed all 3 adventure games (Pikmin the least). The Ninja castle was good but needed 15 levels, same for Balloon Trip. Donkey Kong was ok but more of a Wii game. Octopus Dance was not fun and a waste of mini-game. Yoshi’s Cart was another waste of a slot but did show potential for gameplay ideas.

        • Fred

Animal Crossing is our family favorite and octopus dance is one the kids love

      • Yobrolo

        Fruit Cart is awesome.

      • Wayne Beck

I really liked the Racing Game. Pikmin is the only 4 Player I haven’t got to play a lot. Agree about the rest.

    • Michael DeVore

I think Nintendo Land would have been better had it been done like Wii Sport U is. A 2 buck all day pass or a fee to purchase a particular game would have been optimal. I wouldn’t have felt like I was getting a half dozen game I’d never play, and when I did have people over to play it would be cheap to get them started. A few of the games are excellent, but most of them are just cheep party games. I also think Wii Party U should have been done that way as well.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I agree. So many games I can have fun with in groups for hours. I kind of wish it had online because I could play Mario Chase or the Luigi’s Mansion mini games with my brother and nephew more often which do not always come over.

    • LopsidedPasta

But NSMBU and NSLU are much bigger titles than Nintendoland. A casual consumer is much more likely to purchase a bundle with those games than with Nintendoland. This is the right move on Nintendo’s part.

  • palomino blue

Should have seen this bundle a lot closer to launch. I’d still be conflicted since I really wanted the Zelda gamepad.

  • BIG Franky

I think this is an awesome bundle and a great value…. this will move a lot of units… and will drive even more sales of SMW3D… as anyone interested in these games will surely want that…. very smart, synergistic marketing. love it.

  • Διονύς84

Nintendo Land should be given for free with any U console. There’s no reason at all for this title to be sold on its own.

Also, this is a great move by Nintendo. Mario is the flagship

    • Gregg

Why not? Carnival Games was one of Wii’s best sellers, and it is CRAP. Nintendo Land is far from crap.

      • Διονύς84

Nintendo Land is like Wii Sports. It’s not deep enough to stand on its own

        • Funkee Dynamite

i agree, it still feels like just demo software to me

          • Fred

Not me, my family has throughly enjoyed Nintendo Land

          • SleepySkullhead

It’s too big to be considered demo software. So much to do!

        • Fred

I disagree it has tons of content and lots of fun

        • Ducked

Nintendo Land is far better then Wii Sports

  • Gregg

Nintendo land is very under-appreciated. BUT, this is a great bundle, that should connect well

  • demann78

This isn’t fair. I feel like a fool being a day one buyer. I also had to send my system in for repair twice. This is to good of a value. What a way to slap you in the face.

  • Jack5221

Makes sense to me. Nintendoland is a lot better played with a group of people. And since not everyone has a big family of brothers / sisters, or large group of friends they see often, then is is perfect for them.

    • Ducked

Plus you can get Nintendo Land pretty cheap now

  • devmiles

this should have been done one year ago

  • AAAkabob

This is dumb. Nintendo Land was ment to show off the c abilities of the gamepad and fun asynchronous 5player gaming. Now all people will see is a reflection of what’s on their tv. Not very good first impression if you ask me.

    • SleepySkullhead

Yeah, Nintendo Land is an ideal bundle game. I spent weeks playing it. Plus each game did something completely different with the gamepad.

    • Ducked

People will still buy Nintendo land because its a standalone party game. Not many people will buy NSMBU over SM3DW.

    • GuardiansFan

i played nintendo land for less than an hour. if i had a choice i would have picked this bundle over the nintendo land bundle. Nintendo land isn’t for everyone. I actually would have taken the wii sports HD that is coming out over nintendo land even though i have already played those games in SD qualities for way too many hours on the original wii.

  • only god can judge me

This is a great bundle that holds significant value for first time wii u buyers however, being that I already played new super mario bros u when it first came out the wii u zelda bundle was my 1st option of choice which to me still is a better buy the zelda gamepad alone with all its gold and splendor was enough to make me buy the zelda bundle.

  • Zuxs13

maybe this is what all the people in Japan have been waiting for… A price drop didn’t help, Zelda bundle didn’t help, if a Mario Bundle doesn’t help, not good news.

  • Slug_DC

So is this only .eu or is this bundle replacing the NintendoLand SKU in NA as well?

  • Ducked

Who predicted this months ago? Who predicted this months ago? You’re welcome.

  • CCM

Honestly, this bundle isn’t that great. This isn’t 1985 or 1991 anymore. A side-scrolling Mario game just isn’t going to move hardware like they did in the past. The New Luigi U game is basically just an alternate version of the game with a 100 second time limit for each level, where you control Luigi instead. It was $20 to download and $30 on disc. Big deal.

Before the fanboys and fangirls start attacking me, please note, I own a Wii U. Bought it at launch last November. I’m pulling for Nintendo to pull this thing out of the fire. What they SHOULD do for a bundle is have Super Mario 3D World packed in. That would move A LOT more hardware than a couple of side-scrolling Mario games or a download of a remake of a 11-year old GameCube game.

    • only god can judge me

I agree with your statement I’ve been said numerous times they should release a all red wii u with super mario 3d world

  • babulibaba

Is this sku 350 or 300?

  • Makakilo_Man

I’m always looking for ways to include my wife (who’s not a gamer) when I play with my Wii U, so I’m kinda disappointed to see this Nintendo Land bundle go. She’s tried Mario, but the controls were a little too advanced.

    • 00EpicGamer00

How are the controls of Mario too “advanced” for your wife? I could understand a game like Zelda, I guess. But Mario? If she can play Nintendo land, she can easily play Mario. Nintendo land is, really, more “advanced” than Mario, in terms of controls that is. With Mario, you just run and jump…two controls. With Nintendo land, you have to remember multiple different controlls.

      • Makakilo_Man

You would think so huh? But I guess years after years of Mario I’ve taken for granted how much timing and coordination is involved in jumping, running, throwing fireballs and such, whereas mini games like the Pikmin, Mario Chase, or Luigi Mansion, in Nintendoland contain controls that are easier and more intuitive.

  • bizzy gie

$80 worth of content for less than $50?

Now is the best time to get a Wii U.

  • demann78

Im upset about this. I just hope it sells

  • demann78

I think all next gen will have the same problem. This is such a great deal if this doesn’t sell I don’t know what to think.

  • Rocky

    Windwaker hard copy I would buy…but a Mario game 2D and knowing there’s a Mario 3D, I’ll pass.

  • MewThree28

I really want to get this bundle, but I really don’t want a black Wii U :(

  • Merrfn

I think Nintendoland demonstrates the capabilities the Wii U gamepad has better then NSMBU.

  • Kirbyomega

I’d rather have had mario come with it but I would NOT have waited until now to get my wii u.

  • darkcreap

I have a WiiU from day one with a ZombiU pack plus Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros U. Nintendo Land is great, but I think it fails to deliver in the aspect it was intended to be: a social party game. Because of the following reasons:

    1) Being based on Nintendo franchises, only Nintendo fans are likely to be appealed by the minigames being a representation of Nintendo franchises. The games can be extremely fun, though.
    2) Because the WiiU gamepad is the main focus of the game, motion is not the main focus of the game (although it is for some minigames), even though people use Wii motes. Even my mother played Wii Sports for bowling. Nintendo Land is not so accessible for people who do not usually play videogames.

    3) It is not immediately fascinating. None of my family were surprised by the mechanics given by the gamepad, even though they are great. The problem is that it is not so direct as the Wiimote was. Nintendo Land is a bit more oriented for classic videogame players.
    4) The tutorials were annoying. You could not skip them even if you wanted to.
    5) [This is pure opinion] Some minigames were great, some were good and some were boring or even annoying (I did not like very much Mario chase).

In a survey for club Nintendo, I clearly indicated that the game was overpriced and that continues to be my opinion. While some minigames are really great and show what you can do with the gamepad, in general it did not do too much for me. My favourite one is the ghost hunting minigame. Inspired in Luigi’s mansion if I remember correctly. I think it is even better than the Mario Chase game to show how great asymmetrical gameplay can be.

Nintendo Land was meant to be the Wii Sports of Wii U, but, as much as it was a good way of showing the WiiUs capabilities, it is not great in my opinion.

EDIT: After a whole lot of tutorials, my whole family was begging for either a shooter or Mario Kart. Not allowing to skip tutorials was the most stupid thing I’ve ever seen.

EDIT 2: Conclusion: I much would prefer the Mario Bundle, although I think that Wii U should have been bundled with Super Mario 3D world. New Super Mario games are a bit… repetitive to me. Too many of them in a few years. Super Mario 3D world seems fresher to me.

  • John Andalora

    Interesting call.
However, I think they should include one Wiimote before this is a good idea. What’s fun about most Nintendo games is playing it with a friend. I don’t think NSMBU or NintendoLand are nearly as fun alone, because all it is is trying to beat yourself.

  • Saikyo

I have a Big Family so nintendo land hung out inside the wii u for a VERY long time, and we continue to play it A LOT
nintendo overestimated local multiplayer though, i can see why people who dont play this the way it was meant to be played, 5 players, were let down,
ninty should have figured out a way to release this as an online multiplayer game

  • goldenfirered136

I hope they do a Wii U ambassador program, cause I feel cheated right now with all these new bundles and a price drop

  • Is_Mort

This begs the question, If I bought Wii U Delexe and NSMBU, then why am I not getting super luigi u free in the cash shop? This is BS.

    • Iván Enrique Garcerant Tafur

That’s the faith of early adopter I fear :-(

  • PatcherStation

Nintendo Land is a poor game. £40 a launch, no chance. Nintendo should always launch with a 3D Mario game or even Mario Kart. Maybe even a Zelda. No excuses.
