Wii U Zelda will use GamePad to its fullest, says Aonuma

In a new interview, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma says the GamePad will be used to its fullest extent for the new Zelda title.

eiji-aonuma

A new interview with Eiji Aonuma is up over on Zelda Informer and an interesting tidbit from it is that Aonuma says the next Zelda game for Wii U will feature the GamePad to the fullest. The relevant bit of the interview is below:

4Gamer: How is the new Wii U title coming along?

Eiji Aonuma: Of course it’s moving along. We also have to reflect on what we did with Wind Waker for our next title. Since Wind Waker HD was a remake, there were limits to what we could do with the Wii U GamePad, but for a new title, we can utilize it to the fullest.

4Gamer: So people who have played Wind Waker HD can expect some of those elements to carry over onto the next game.

Eiji Aonuma: I believe so. For example, on the Wii U GamePad, you have a map display on the screen. This map isn’t just for the sea, it’s also for other locations as well. We will reflect on these sort of things for a new game.

It’s interesting to see Aonuma talk about the GamePad functions for Wind Waker HD and how those relate to the new Zelda title, but I hope using the GamePad to its fullest extent means more than just putting the map on the bottom screen. What do you think?

    What do I think?

I think E3 2014 is going to be another one of these:

    • Majora’s Mask

if theres one person in here who hasnt seen this he doesnt know what zelda is though i suggest we be cautious we have no idea about the art style yet and its not going to be ultra realistic for sure thats what got me worried

      • D.M.T

No one really wants a photo realistic Zelda game. We want it to be realistic, kinda like Twilight Princess or the tech demo from 2011 but not too realistic.

        • Arthur Jarret

I’d like it to look more like okami… who is this ‘we’ you are talking about? Forgot to take your medication? I often do,..

      • DragonSilths

Does it matter? It could be a Stick Figure Zelda game, still would be fun.

        • Majora’s Mask

i mean i like aunoma but he has taken risks like ww before

          • DragonSilths

Windwaker is my 2nd favorite Zelda game.

          • Majora’s Mask

4rth for me its way too easy and hero mode doesnt make it hard its just too small and fast paced and boring empty sailing its too different and the size too small for my tastes and nintndo gallery sucks

          • DragonSilths

I never use Hero mode, I play Zelda for the fun of a new adventure, I don’t want it to be a hard challenge. Windwaker small? Hardly. Sure a few other islands for side quests would be nice. As for Nintendo Gallery…well that is just a pointless little thing lol.

          • Majora’s Mask

well not exactly small but so fast paced it looks small twenty minutes after i get bombs they re 99 the biggest upgrade no real character progression oot managed it fantasticly and mm and ss topped them all making me feel like a trained killer at the end or a legendary demigod if you may ww just feels op no real connection Link isnt your link in ww is like guiding him though at ss he is you feel you are him not vice versa ww is like watching an interactive movie and thats its worst flaw why it will never be a 10 ww just doesnt live to the hype and doesnt deserve the attention it has

          • DragonSilths

Any game is all based off opinions. You have strong feelings against WW, I have strong feelings for it. We can agree about Ocarina. Now Ryse…that’s an interactive movie. Hell the Wonderful 101 is an interactive movie.

        • Kevin Malone

If It is A Link To The Past graphically, but also as good and even longer, I would destroy my wallet for it.

    • The Clockwork Being

Hopefully they make a press conference for this E3. Nintendo Directs are great and all but I really want to see a crowd’s reaction to the reveals.

  • iamserious

Dang I wanted to be first lol

  • Jack5221

Zelda U is going to be legendary!

    • The Clockwork Being

True but first this should make my body ready for the game.

      • Madmagican

That looks both amazing and ridiculous at the same time
I don’t know how to feel about it o_O

      • ZeldaFanzzzz

Too much purple in my opinion. Rather have the zelda theme color

        • Majora’s Mask

          THERES NEVER ENOUGH PURPLE

        • Arthur Jarret

Yup – If they did this, the gamecube comparissons would never end. I’d kill for a red, purple, blue and green set of 4 four swords-themed wiiremotes though

          • Moreck

OMG if they ported the GameCube Four Swords and let you use the gamepad and 3DSs instead of GBAs, I would die of happiness.

        • Lusunup

          Needs more Puuurple!

      • DragonSilths

No thanks, Majora’s Mask is my least favorite Zelda game, cant fucking stand it. And Next year Majora’s Mask 3D will happen. But props on the picture its nice.

        • Majora’s Mask

          WHAT DID YOU SAY?

          • Nintedward

            Blasphemy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • fireheartis1

I’ve personally have never played Majora’s Mask so it would be a fresh Zelda Title for me. I traded my N64 for the GameCube before I got the chance to see what it was all about. Plus even though I have a Wii U I would buy that amazing bundle you came up with.

          • Majora’s Mask

there is a mm for gc it was ported

        • The Clockwork Being

May Majora come for your soul and haunt it forever!!! A little plus but I hope Majora manages to bring the moon down on you!!

          • DragonSilths

I have no soul. Souls are for the weak.

          • Majora’s Mask

            72 HOURS REMAIN

          • DragonSilths

            Alrighty then.

          • Majora’s Mask

            62 HOURS REMAIN

          • DragonSilths

Just fast forward it to 0 already. In Majora’s Mask 15 minutes of real life time was like 24 hours Majora’s Mask time.

      • Magnus Eriksson

        Looks cool

      • Jack5221

Thats a really cool bundle. If they release Zelda U during the 2014 holiday season WITH Wii U bundles, then expect them to fly off the shelf in a matter of micro seconds. Then… Watch the greedy people post them on Ebay for ridiculous amounts of money. Its pretty much guaranteed that there will be a Zelda U bundle, I plan on getting on it. Nothing wrong with owning 2 Wii U’s. :)

        • Arthur Jarret

Well, the download only zelda included and the split between purchases due to nintendo’s own way of doing things in terms of an account system would certainly hold me back…

On the other hand, the warranty is almost expired of my launch day wii, so I’m thinking of making a cast of the housing and fully replacing it… gamepad with a matte black front, no more smudges/dust magnet and a red back to match my 3DS XL, the console itself… I dunno, I’m thinking of replacing some of the regular diodes on the mainboard with LEDs and making a transparant housing – painting it with a self-designed decal from the inside, but leaving one strip transparent so you can see the blinking lights as the mainboard is working.

        • nin-10-doughfan

          never enough indeeeed!

      • NkoSekirei

        holy $hit!!! that looks sick

      • Justagamer

No I want a new zelda first

      • Adam

        Purplerer

      • di g

If only it played “Purple Rain” when you turn it on

      • Rinslowe

        You didn’t just… But… Wow.

      • Nicolas Dorion

uhm, I really think the purple will get obnoxious after a while

      • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

I’ll do for that WiiU love the metallic purple (wish N really made a Wii U like that) insta buy.

      • Tekina Sibawo

shut up and take my rupees

    • Magnus Eriksson

Everything points in the direction of a new Zelda U in Four Swords Adventure spirit, or even better in the spirit of CD-i classics. Probably a sequel to Wand of Gamelon, in yarn styled graphics of course.

      • The Clockwork Being

Magnus you are a genius. Your predictions are always right on target. But I would prefer Zelda’s adventure in yarn and paper mario styled graphics, the blend would be perfect.

        • Magnus Eriksson

Battle system from Paper Mario? Thats brilliant.

          • The Clockwork Being

I also think the game should be connected to the Virtual Boy somehow. Like that it would sell Wii U’s like crazy.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Virtual boy could be connected to Wii U via cable like they did with GBA to GCN. Would be great to have Link in 3D. So Virtual Boy connectivity is certainly the best alternative I can think of. Wii U and Virtual Boy suits each others great too. Also all Virtual Boy owners who doesnt owe a Wii U might be convinced to buy one. It would be a wise target group for Nintendo.

          • The Clockwork Being

I can see it already Magnus. We could truly turn around the Wii U sells wise with these brilliant ideas. By bring back the Glorious Virtual boy the PS and Xbox fanboys better watch their backs. We truly can turn around the Wii U’s case.

    • The Clockwork Being

      Aonuma’s shirt is legendary!

  • RyuNoHadouken

use the pad as a camera view when aiming arrows

    • swic11

no no no. you can want it.. but I would hate that

      • Nintedward

Gyroscope is sweet! Ocarina 3D and WWHD prove that.

        • Arthur Jarret

I think nintendoland (zelda and metroid specifically) prove it best. Batman used it pretty well too – although I was already used to control stuff like that with wii and ps3 (flower!) – on 3DS, mario & luigi dream team use it pretty well in most luiginary attacks

    • AAAkabob

I honestly want this in all shooters. Imagine using the scope and instead of the magnetic pull you press a button to use the gyroscope for subtle adjustments.

  • Agent721

This is great news. I happen to really enjoy the tablet, so using it to its fullest potential is music to my ears. I just started playing WW HD, and even as a remake, I prefer the tablet over the pro joystick. I can’t wait for a new Zelda!

  • SonicLucario

I just hope it isnt too gimmicky. Wind Waker HD was an awesome remake and used the gamepad really well.

    • Majora’s Mask

i fear the controlls a bit i play ww hd with a pro controller bec the gp doesnt feel natural in zelda and zelda u hzs me worried a bit

  • Marcell Wade

He’s also stated, that alot of ideas will carry over from Wind Waker HD, to the new Wii U Zelda, things like Miiverse, drag and drop item use, so it’s going to be epic, personally I hope the over world is huge, show us that Wii U power.

    • Majora’s Mask

its going to be its going to be at least 25 gigs and imagine ww hd is about 1,9 gigs though the 25 gb is a last years report who knows until 2014 or 2015 its going to be big but remember its a zelda game not skyrim they want a world full of things to do and a they dont have the time to create a world like skyrim

      • Marcell Wade

I don’t want Skyrim big, just Zelda big lol.

    • DragonSilths

Great more Miiverse crap, Im Perma Banned on 2 accounts so I cant even use the Tingle Bottles lol. Course by the time Zelda HD comes out those perma bans will be gone…

      • Magnus Eriksson

        How did you get permabanned?

        • DragonSilths

A kid who dislikes me cause I blocked him along time ago for annoying me, keeps bragging about getting me banned and he says every time I get unbanned he will report me and get me banned again. So falsely reporting me. Literally he got me a 2 week ban, when it expired not even 24 hours later he got me banned again but a permanent one. Seriously anyone under 18 SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO REPORT ON MIIVERSE. Combine that with absolutely retarded admins. Miiverse is the biggest crack in the Wii U’s armor. It could be so much better yet you say or do anything that anybody older then 5 would say or do and you get banned.

          • Majora’s Mask

so true i wrote god damnit and i was banned for 3 weeks what bad community

    • Mario

      Don’t you mean Nintendo power!?

  • Squid

I really want them to be able to make link roll bombs like in skyward sword, but swiping the screen in that direction.

    • Stoenk

depending on the angle of the gamepad he either rolls or throws the bomb

  • Sdudyoy

    Man I want this game!

  • William Short

God please let Zelda Wii U knock GTA V off its game. Im sick of hearing about GTA V

    • Majora’s Mask

gta v is over the one month craziness passed now everyone says its overrated and not a 10

      • Leo

It surely is overrated. I get bored of it after a while. It is a very fun game but the over use of bad language and enphasis on glorified crime makes me wanna throw up. I still play from time to time though. I really have no objections for this type of game, but if i have to choose between a Zelda and a GTA you can bet i will choose Zelda.

  • Majora’s Mask

EVERYONE PLS SUPPORT COD GHOSTS FOR WI U LETS MAKE ACTIVISION GIVE US COD DLC PLS (i know this is off topic

    • William Short

You don’t have to tell me twice. I feel the Wii U is perfect for COD based on my experience with Black Ops 2

    • SonicLucario

I pre-ordered it months ago for my Wii U :)

      • Majora’s Mask

who didnt? wii u for the win

    • DragonSilths

Fuck COD, It’s pure corruption not a game. I don’t want it corrupting the Wii U, now Destiny…ACTIVSION AND BUNGIE GIVE US DESTINY ON WII U.

    • Krzysztof

I hope that they’ll use gyroscopic aiming, using wii u game pad. That’d be truly unique COD experience. Fingers crossed.

      • Majora’s Mask

they said they have but i am more excited about the touch screen all this easy acess to weapons like an arsenal in your hands

    • Ducked

I’m buying it, but it just feels incomplete without zombies..

  • CEObrainz

I liked the controls used in Skyward Sword but I’m more than happy to use a more traditional game style. Can’t wait for this game….

    • ItzameyaToad

How cool would it be if they had an option to play the game with motion controls IF you wanted too! That would be really cool because in Skyward Sword there where times I didn’t want to make a motion or point at the screen and I would have preferred traditional controls then again I did really like Motion controls so having the option would be nice.

      • CEObrainz

That would be very nice, but it may limit gameplay options due to certain control schemes, for example if another Ghirahim like boss shows up, I don’t think you’d be able to beat him with a Pro Controller.

  • Sydney Ultrasyd

Please also tell me it will use real Wii U’s power and push graphics to its fullest ! Show us what it has in its guts.

    • DragonSilths

Metroid will from Retro in like 2015. A Starfox game and F-Zero could as well. And Zelda will also.

      • LonDonE247

you forgot bayonetta 2, trust me its going to be the first true next gen game on wii u! it is 1080p at a rock solid 60fps, and is bat shit crazy! the sheer scale of boss fights, and interactive moving dynamic levels is mind blowing! the art design and character models is great! its pretty much the first wii u game which shows off that wii u is a true next gen console! I loved the first bayonetta, but the sequel is bayonetta 1 x 100

        • DragonSilths

I was originally excited for Bayo 2. But after the disaster that was the Wonderful 101 (FOR ME THATS MY OPINION DONT LOSE YOUR COOL) I am not sure I will get Bayo 2. The story looks good, but I realy don’t like the WAAAAAY over the top style of Platinum Games. To much shit going on and my brain is slow I guess. I just cant keep up with it all and I just get annoyed and pissed off.

  • Javy G

Still having fun with Zelda Windwaker… the huge body of water makes one feel as if you are in real a adventure. Zelda games always give you an awesome story!

    • Adam Porter

T_T i love it sooooo much

  • ZeldaFanzzzz

OOOOOO can’t wait for e3 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just for zelda!!!!!!

    • DragonSilths

      E3 Nintendo Direct you mean?

      • Mohammad Badir

hopefully they’ll do a press confrence next year, don’t get me wrong i love the directs, but i love hearing people chear even more! :P

        • Rinslowe

I think it’s very likely Nintendo will hold some kind of press conference next E3.
Besides the new Directs angle they most certainly held off this year also due to the fact there wasn’t a whole lot to show to the media. Having playable booths was the right way for them this year.
PS4 and Xbox 1 would have taken the wind out of Nintendo’s media sails and I’m glad they were savvy enough to see it.
Next year though, come E3 and the Wii U will be more in it’s element, they’ll also have more knowledge on the other next gen consoles and how they’re received in the market and might just decide to make an appearance due to strong upcoming titles.
I’m expecting to see some decent footage on Zelda, Bayo 2 and X as well as release date information on Smash and Kart next E3. Maybe even a couple of them will release around the time of E3. If that doesn’t put a spanner in the other companies works then nothing will…

  • The True Gamer

    Wii DS

  • Adam

    Wii u Zelda.
    Game pad gyroscope = shield
    Right joystick = sword.
That would improve on skyward sword’s model and you could aim the shield to parry enemies to gain an advantage and use special strikes

    • Arthur Jarret

Uhm… you forgot the camera controls… my single gripe with skyward sword.

      • Adam

I have never had problems with Zelda cameras. I guess since there is an extra shoulder button that could be used. Or the d pad like c pad in Mario 64.

  • Arthur Jarret

What do you mean, Ashley?: Obviously, putting the map on the screen is using the screen to it’s fullest extent!
And off TV play… because who wouldn’t want to play an epic game on a small screen instead of their 3D beamer?

Actually – seeing how they even incorperated the clamshell design of the DS into the gameplay of phantom hourglass, we don’t need to worry about Zelda being a hardware showcase on all accounts

  • Moreck

Anouma and his team made brilliant use of motion controls in Skyward Sword, so I can’t wait to see what they do with the GamePad! :D

  • Jared Garcia

There could be a camera mode that’ll make you look in a direction to see things that aren’t on the TV. There could be something basic like tilting the Gamepad to open cranks like Killzone does with its controller.

    • C4

“There could be something basic like tilting the Gamepad to open cranks like Killzone does with its controller.”

Hopefully you don’t have to do that every time you open a treasure chest :D

  • Pikachief

Having the option to play the entire game in 1st person would be neat. I really enjoyed the 1st person view for some aspects in Wind Waker and who knows, it might be pretty great for the next game if its an option.

  • companyoflosers

ive seen other places where its claimed that in the new zelda game, just one temple spans the size hyrule field was in ocarina. so basically big. if thats any indication of how big hyrule field itself would be, id say the potential for exploration that could be in the game could be huge. imagine a hyrule like it is in ocarina or twilight princess but like 20 times bigger and that just my estimate. people said they liked wind waker alot for how much exploration there was. this would provide that as well if they fill up all the space with plenty of things to explore. as for art style, to each his/her own bt i was always in favor of the twilight princess style and since nintendo has moved up to hd, we can probably say goodbye to muddy low res textures and see alot more detail and work put into environments.

  • Rinslowe

If it features a map styled in a similar way to say…. Skyrims? Then okay…
Especially if you could interact with the map in real time, scrolling by using a finger or stylus and being able to set waypoints, fast travel etc… in that way. All the while in a 3D top down perspective.
Double tap to zoom, and holding down on a location brings up a codex like description of the place if you’ve either been there or heard about it through conversation, letter, book etc…
A quick change button could be there to swiftly move to inventory or a vertical section to the right of the screen with all of the favourite items available for hot swapping…

Anyway, I’m sure whatever the peeps at Nintendo come up with will be much better…

  • Assassinated23

What this means is that the near field communications chip will be used. Also the accelerometer for motion controlled aiming most likely, the touchscreen will be incorporated to good effect, and there will be asymmetrical interactional gameplay between the gamepad and the TV screen. It’s also not unlikely the camera will play some role. The key thing though is the NFC chip, and I’m interested to see how that will be handled.

  • WarioForever

I hope they will use Wii U gamepad in a right way, not like SS where you swing your sword like an idiot in puzzle sometimes…

  • devmiles

It’s taking far too long for the wii-u to reveal it’s full potential. many people are still sceptical or just not convinced while the ps3 and x360 have much to offer.
even for the fact that the hardware specs are better than ps3 and x360 there is no game that shows us that. not that it is about graphics in the first place but in a sense it does show off it’s potential that way. the gamepad is cool and somewhat innovative as i experienced with zelda windwaker. to have maps on screen and able to easily access items and info is a delight. I’m looking forward to the new Zelda and am sure this game will rock all Zelda fans. I also hope they will pull out everything out of the hardware too, but again..this will take at least another year or longer

  • Deezy
  • cricket

I hope they remember to support the pro controller to its fullest extent. Nintendo touts accessibility and then they force you into a control scheme that many people find uncomfortable, whether that’s waggling a Wiimote or having to hold the rather unwieldy gamepad. My wrists and hands can only take so much.

I love them for putting decent pro controller support in Wind Waker, so here’s to hoping they provide the same accessibility and comfort in Zelda U!

    • starwars360

Yes I am sure Nintendo will do it since Nintendo know many gamers love play with pro controller and gamepad same time or alone. So I am sure new Zelda game will require both like Wind Waker HD.

    • Cyberus

I heard you couldn’t use for Pro Controller for Wind Waker XP

      • cricket

I played through Wind Waker entirety with the Wii U pro controller. If you mean the classic controller pro, then no, there is no support for that.

        • Cyberus

Huh, I guess I’ve been bamboozled

    • C4

      Bingo.

Pure Pro-like control scheme also makes Off-TV Play with the GamePad possible and/or easier.

  • bizzy gie

    Looking forward to this game!

  • asdfg

Come on, show us a trailer already! D:

I can’t wait to see how the GamePad will be used in this next Zelda game!

  • TehPostman

I’m all for utilizing the Gamepad i just hope they don’t make it a hassle and try to fit it into every single thing possible to the point where it feels like a drag more then anything, but i will stay optimistic, i have great faith they will make it work well.

  • demann78

    I hope they do.

  • demann78

windwaker uses a good amount of the game pad

  • demann78

Hopefully this game will use all of it.

  • Alan Schurle

That interview is a whole lotta nothing to string us along…guess we’ll have to wait for another 8mos to get something substantive!

  • farrellbr

    e3 2014 I can not wait

  • Saikyo

    This! A thousand times This.
shame though since this might be the game that shows devs the potential and ingenuity of the gamepad and don’t really see this releasing until 2015, maybe even holidays 2015.
Long time to wait to unlock the gamepads potential
