Brazil finally gets the Wii U, will cost R$1899

preco-wii-u

The Wii U is finally launching in Brazil, which has notoriously high taxes on import items like video game consoles. The Wii U will be arriving in Brazil on November 26 at a cost of R$1899, which is about $829 in USD. Games will retail in the region for R$179-R$199, which is around $77-87 USD. Pre-orders for the system in Brazil will begin today. Brazil is getting the 32GB Wii U with New Super Mario Bros. U and the New Super Luigi U DLC.

While this is the most expensive Wii U in the world, you can still purchase a Wii U and an Xbox One in Brazil for the price of a PS4, which is launching with a hefty tag of R$3999. Ouch.

  • Smeagol

It was at U$D 1000 in Uruguay two months after launch, like in january. (BTW Uruguay is just next to Brazil).

    • Fico

I’m from Uruguay. I bought mine some weeks ago for nearly 600 USD (with two 220-to-110v adapters). I was a basic model.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog

Well, a LOT more affordable than PS4, but DANG!

    • Ducked

I’m glad I live in North America.

      • Sonic the Hedgehog

I’m glad I’m a video game character. Especially a 3rd party one. I get consoles for free!

        • Ducked

Well I get free access to Disney movies and shows. And Disney World!

          • Sonic the Hedgehog

            Okay… can’t top that… I already destroyed Eggman’s interstellar amusement park…

          • Ducked

            Nice move lol

        • DarkLegacy

You should be glad that you’re faster too. I wish I was like you, but I can’t cause I’m too busy too defeat Xehanort. I could probably have a race with you, but I already know that you’ll win

          • Sonic the Hedgehog

Well, Xenahort can’t be as dumb as Eggman, ya know?

          • DarkLegacy

I think Eggman can be more dumb. Is he even suppose to be genius? He just get’s robots to try and defeat you and then you just get them. And then there’s Xehanort, and I’m lucky that I’m here otherwise I might have nearly ended up like Terra

        • Majora’s Mask

            Are you Ocarina of Time?

      • Niknique

        I know right?

      • e_rocket

You have very good reasons to be glad…

    • Mario

I never expected it would cost THAT much!

  • tronic307

This level of taxation is ludicrous. This can only serve to keep the people of the world disconnected.

  • Jack5221

It costs about 550$ for the 8gb Wii U, and 650$ for the 32gb Wii U here in Costa Rica. Nothing to do with taxes, its just that stupid store Vertigo jacks up the price on everything. Luckily though, we have Amazon here. So when it comes to buying video games, we just get them off amazon for the USA prices.

    • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

like me, in Dominican Republic, Amazon save my wallet.

      • Dominicruz

I’m glad that Im not the only Dominican here

in fact all my Wii U Games were bought in MercadoLibre cause here in México are so espensive.

          • e_rocket

Yes they are, it is an abuse…

    • Iván Enrique Garcerant Tafur

Indeed. Amazon let me think in USA price level for my games. Obviously I need to factor in the price for international delivery and a tax for any product of more than USD 100 as the console itself. BTW, I am in Venezuela.

    • Adrian Brown

100% true. I bought mine day one and it was almos $700 for the deluxe model. (pura vida!!!!!)

  • Ducked

    Sucks to live in Brazil.

    • DarkLegacy

Wow you must be glad you’re living in North America rather than Brazil

      • Ducked

        Very

        • DarkLegacy

You’re not the only one. I’m glad that I don’t live in Brazil but I live on a island

  • Daniel Carvalho

That’s the problem with Brazil: abusive taxes for everything, specially video games. Not only the Wii U, but the PS4 and Xbox One are going to suffer from that evil, just like every other console. As a result, it’s less likely that first party games will be translated to Brazilian Portuguese,or that we’re having special events. Retailers get almost nothing from the sold systems, gamers have to pay more than the double the actual price and the government gets all our money to NOT use on hospitals, roads, school…

    • Magnus Eriksson

What do you think is the government if not hospitals, school and roads? Btw, Brazil is a quite large economy (ranked 8th) in growth (ranked 7th), so I guess it works for them?

      • Daniel Carvalho

No, it doesn’t! I live in Brazil, I know how things are here. What I meant by my comment above is that the taxes collected are not used for those purposes . Instead, our politicians steal it and use it for themselves only. People die in public hospitals because there are no medics, nurses or equipment there. Our children can’t go to public schools because there are no teachers there, no tables or chair for the students and no food for them during intervals. We can’t go outside without the fear of being murdered because of a few changes, or even worse, just because someone thought it’d be fun to commit a crime. I got mugged at midday, less than 100 meters away from my school, and the police made everything they could to prevent me from making a formal accusation!

We have high taxes, always rising. We have no return on that, our hospitals are decaying, we can’t educate our children, and the police doesn’t even move a finger for you – and if they actually do, the high-ups let the criminals roam free after a week in jail, no matter how many they killed, tortured or raped. This is Brazil! This is the country I live in! All that I stated above is the daily life of all of us who live here! This is our reality! Don’t pretend you know what’s going on here, what you see on the media is all biased, made so it hides the truth from the rest of the world – and from us, Brazilians as well!

        • Magnus Eriksson

I really didnt mean to be disrespectful. Sorry if it sounded that way. But taxation is not the problem as I understand it? Corruption is. And yes, I know many lives under the poverty limit in your country, but as I have understood it its going in right direction, with reformation and growth in economy? To be honest I dont know to much about Brasil, and I dont want to pretend that either.

          • Daniel Carvalho

I understand you didn’t mean to be disrespectful, but when we say we have problems in Brazil, people just seem to bash it as if it were just a child complaining about not gaining more presents on Christmas.

Well, the problem is corruption, yes, but those abusive taxes are great part of that corruption. So, when we say taxes, we’re already talking about corruption there.

Well, about that last part, anyone can become rich if you state that “from now on, everyone who has enough money to wear clothes is considered rich”. It is true that, according to studies, Brazilians are more and more getting out of the poverty limit, but I highly doubt it’s not just some of the higher-ups trying to hide things. Unfortunately, this ends up being only my opinion, as I have no proof for that theory.

          • Erik

Ill give you credit for talking about this to everyone. Its so harsh there because of corruption and politicians wanting just money and not making any promises and im pretty glad my parents taught me to never vote for anyone that won’t do it or keep making up promises and lies. Just a side note… Max Payne 3 just bring that up to life on the game about how lowly it is with corruption and all in Brazil. Just do your best out there ok?

        • Gibosdog

Wow Daniel, I feel bad for brazilians now. Hope that one day it all changes for the better. Kinda grateful to be a puertorican

        • Mario

Wow. I guess Brazilians have it rough as well. You’re not the only one whose country faces a horrible reality. (I’m just lucky to be living in Canada right now).

        • usama

very similar to my country Pakistan. But we also have terrorist(taliban,al-quaida) problems, drone(USA) problems, also even our own army,ISI,rangers,FC and police torture and kill us and are so called leaders are paid to keep thier mouth shut against the USA, and ISI. it’s just their little game. the problem is Especially visible in my province Balochistan. our economy is weak. We are the victims of torture and terrorism, but are still called ‘BLOODY PAKIS’ and terrorists by the world community

    • The Clockwork Being

Dude this can resolved easily with Nintendo building a Latin American HQ to manage everything over there and to lower the cost.

      • Daniel Carvalho

No, it wouldn’t easily solve anything. It would surely lower the price if the console were manufactured within the country’s borders (no matter where it is imported from, the taxes are all the same. We need it to be built here).

But even so, we have something called “cascade effect” on the taxes. All the taxes build up: you have a tax for raw material usage, a tax for building something with that raw material, a tax to make that product available for sale, a tax for the license of that product, and so on. As an example of that, a car built here costs around R$9000,00 (around US$4500,00 if we take US$1,00 = R$2,00 – I don’t know how much the difference currently is, but I believe it’s not that far from that) inside the factory. But you have to pay taxes for the raw material used on the seats. That seat becomes a new raw material used to build the car, so you have to pay taxes for using that. The same happens with the engine, wheel, tires, everything becomes a new raw material you have to pay taxes for. Once the car exits the factory and goes for sale, those taxes are officially applied,so the car that would cost R$9.000,00 ends up costing R$36000,00 (something around US$18000,00). The price simply triples like that.

You’re right on that, if we were to manufacture the consoles that would be sold here, it would surely lower the price. If that would solve the problem? No, not at all. Why? Because aside from that lot of taxes I explained above, you have a few more: taxes over video-game related products. That’s right, consumers, retailers and manufacturers have to pay even more taxes for selling/buying the products! More than 75% of the final price on video game-related products in Brazil are solely for taxes.

I hope you understand now what goes on here.

        • Guest

There must be some good reason for so much taxes no??

  • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

    In Dominican Republic the 32gb is at 19500 RD$ = 459 USD
    and the 8 gb = 348 USD
i buy the wii u @ amazon, i pay just for the shipping and of course the wii u.

i don’t know how much the ps4 is, but a new ps3 is at 341 USD, imagine the ps4…

  • Vinicius

Glad I already got mine from USA.. Anyway, you can find it at “not official” stores at R$ 1200,00.. (which is already expensive).

  • starwars360

Thank god I not borned in Brazil!!! Relieved. I borned in London, England, UK!!!

I do felt bad for Brazil gamers. Sorry to them but rest of world and myself is phew. :)

  • starwars360

IGN.com is slow and crap with Wii U news because they don’t do research more and they seem very busy with Xbox One more than PS4 but PS4 still got lots but seem Xbox One got so much ongoing with news. Here is best site for Wii U news. :):):):)

    Love you WiiUDaily.com

    • The Clockwork Being

IGN is full of that doom and gloom bullshit. But when news that talk about the Wii U being sold out at every Taget and Gamestop in US they don`t say shit.

      • starwars360

Yeah and also came with full of trolls. Maybe this why IGN staffs want less news for Wii U to stop trolls bashed on Wii U and seem same for PS Vita. So maybe reasons? Or…. Hehehe :)

      • Ducked

IGN still gives Nintendo games the best reviews.

      • The True Gamer

sorry to point this out, but wii u has been almost completely bad news.

        • Mario

Tell that to Wii party U and the Japaneses!

          • The True Gamer

i said most not all! its not nintendos fault (except for the wii u name), its just that most people dont understand nintendo is not at all competeing with sony and microsoft. nintendo offers a different kind of product, and most game media cant report all the good news because nintendo isnt seen as a competetor to other systems. i love nintendo, but for the most part the wii u hasnt had much good news. yet, that is…

          • Mario

            Right…

          • The True Gamer

            wat

          • The True Gamer

you think wii u is perfect? keep living in your fanboy bubbles, because its only making you a worse gamer

          • Mario

            Right…

          • Majora’s Mask

the wii u had a bad concept from the begining thats why it never sold .the console will fail regardless of one game

          • Mario

            Of course it will! (Sarcasm)

          • jjbredesen

no offence, but that is one of the most stupid comments i have seen today.

            1) The Wii U is a great consept. What is wrong with more futures? It lets you play of the TV and lets you use the gamepad in some very cool ways. The gamepad is not a negative thing so why is it a bad concept?

            2) quote from @Mario
“Tell that to Wii party U and the Japaneses!”

The Wii U’s sales have started to gain a lot of momentum and with the games that are comming out like Mario world, MK8, smash bros etc. There is no question that the wii u will sell. Do you think i am being a fan boy, or to optimistic? No i am not :P The 3DS did not sell and then Nintendo did nearly the exsact same thing as they are doing with the Wii U now. The gave us GAMES!! just look at the 3DS now. It is the best selling system of this period. Games are everything. as long as the console lets you play the games in a comfortable way it’s a good console. Power is not important. As long as the graphics dont give you a headache, its fine!

When it is all said and done, the Wii U will not fail and will be a great system. I dont think it will sell like the PS2, but it will sell a lot more then some of you seem to think.

          • Majora’s Mask

i have a wii u iam writing on the pad now.I DONT SAY ITS BAD BUT IT HAS GOTTEN MORE TABLET USE than game use.The last gen specs are bad the processor is mediocre, dont get me wrong i cant afford a ps4 so i am going nintendo this gen only .But the thing that got me wondered is that sony had a prototype like the gamepad and they said it was too distracting too use.So they made a controller with touch controls and still doing the gamepads job .Have a vita support for games to be played like the pad and stream them everywhere.Sry but expect software the wii u sucks .Its definitely going to be a handheld market only soon or third party unless they make a good gaming controller like the gc and hand the best machine ,a rule they broke with the wii .SRY for writing such a bad comment asshole think before you talk

        • Rocky

          Key word “almost”

          • Nicolas Dorion

No seriously, Wii U has a bad design. The gamepad is way too big, the motion senser inside is pointless and annoying. Shaking a stick was fun (sorta), but moving the gamepad when looking at the screen is not, not to mention that the analog stick can do the job better. The camera is also useless, name me one game that makes a good use of it. And yeah, you can videochat with it but any sane person would rather do it on their phone or on the computer. The microphone is there for no reason again because you need to buy headphones in order to do online chat. Those would have been usefull things is you could move the pad 1 meter away from the wii u. Miiverse is not a bad design, but it’s insignificant. There’s really no other reason to buy a wii u than for thr amazinh exclusives it has

  • The Clockwork Being

That is one of the saddest things I have read.Nintendo are at fault here. They should build a Brazil or South american native Headquarters so that everything can be managed easily. Fund a few factories there and the Wii U will cost less. But NIntendo isn’t the only one, Sony needs this too. Microsoft is the only one that has put a center over there so the XboxOne might cost less.

  • Jeovany

I feel so bad for Brazilian gamers. Now I understand why the PC market is so much bigger than the console market.

    • Kirbyomega

Yeah my family is always asking me to bring them stuff. Its not just consoles its anything electronic really; cameras, computers, phones even shoes are pricey there

Good thing everyone is mega rich in Brazil, oh wait…

  • Deadpool U

Can someone please tell me why the prices in Brazil are so messed up?!

    • starwars360

        Thanks Sora!!! :)

        • DarkLegacy

          You’re welcome ;)

  • Rinslowe

Is this Brazil governments passive aggressive way of asking; “Would you be so kind as to manufacture the Wii U here in Brazil esteemed Nintendo?” Lol.

    Those taxes, ouch alright…

  • Igor

It’s not only videogames. Everything here is way overpriced. Lots of people like me buy from vendors who bring it from abroad. This is the “official” price, what you pay for if you visit big stores. Nevertheless, the price is ridiculous, same as the ps4. But hey, think with me, if it costs that much, it’s because brainless people eventually buy it. They just deserve all to be dead.

  • ZeldaFanzzzz

    Brazil you CRAZY!!!!!

  • Garbage02

My WWHD Bundle cost me $417 dlls :O here at Mexico (Guadalajara) :’( also digital copies or Physical copies they do cost $76 each one… even tho, i’ll still supporting Nintendo :P and maybe PS4, hate that Xbox One shit :O

  • Akatosh

*cough* Wow. *cough* Glad I’m not from Brazil. And for all people in Brazil… it’s probably just cheaper to import your system and games!

Currently here it sells for DKK 2800 = R$1160

Yeah, it sucks to be Brazilian. Glad I have already imported mine last year.

  • Laquandra Washpon

    Yolo Brasil

  • GmailIsDown

PS4 also has an insane price tag in Brazil. and while Sony is upset about it, they can’t do anything.

  • Iván Enrique Garcerant Tafur

At least they have the Wii U through an official channel. Here in Venezuela, Mercado Libre (eBay Latin America) has the Wii U in BsF. 15000 which are around of USD 2380 at official rate. Thanks God we may import from USA but we lost any warrant or customer service.

  • Adrian Brown

It’s fair considering they have the best soccer player of all time and beautiful women.

  • Marcos Parreira

Yeah, we (brazilians) live in the worst place to buy anything imported. Taxes are ridiculously high.

  • Guest

What do you mean by “as much as console games”? Do you mean starting out they are about the same price? Well I mean after a few months PC games drop in price by alot and with sites like Good Old Games GOG the price remains the same across the board wherever you are in the world. Pc games start out the same price but with fast price drops and affordable sites that charge you the same no matter where you are it still remains cheaper.

  • Mario

At least we can agree on something here.

  • Jeovany

Yes they do but that in America. Not in Brazil.
