Nintendo 3DS Miiverse won’t have messages or friend requests

Miiverse2

While it’s great news that the Nintendo 3DS is finally getting the Miiverse, it looks like some of the functionality will not be available on the handheld device. An enterprising NeoGAF member contacted Nintendo Customer Service to find out why the Nintendo 3DS version of Miiverse didn’t have messaging icons and was told its because the Miiverse on 3DS does not support messages between friends or the ability to send and receive friend requests.

The only thing it does support on the handheld is the community features, so you can browse individual communities and check out posts but if you want to be able to talk to friends on the go you’re out of luck for now.

Then why bother? Come on Nintendo, do you really think people just want to browse random people’s miiverse posts? What’s the point in online social media integration on a device if you can’t message and add friends?

  • Lil J Moore

    What’s the point then?

  • Gabe Hoffman

I don’t see much of a big deal in this. You can still post about games

    • Tecpedz94

Yes it is i mean common u know how annoying it is to go on the internet and post my FC so people add me back its not even normal that this is existent. i mean how does Nintendo assume we can add friends other than going online posting our codes hoping for people to add ours back….

      • Gabe Hoffman

People share their FCs all the time. Besides, maybe they will integrate your Wii U friend list. Cross platform chat is a tricky thing

  • Gabe Hoffman

It is maybe due to limitations or something but hey they could probably add it in a future update. Sadly, I know people are gonna be making a mountain out of a molehill on this

  • Dáibhí wotshissurname

Come on, Nintendo, I thought you were stepping up your online game! Obviously not. If you’re somehow promoting Wii U, a bad deal for 3DS owners is not the way to go.

  • Yen

The original Miiverse didn’t have a lot of features either and was very limited. People still loved it. Give it time, it’ll grow. It’s really stupid to be complaining about something that isn’t even out yet.

    • Tecpedz94

They said they have no plans to add these features anyway … But ya lets wait and judge the day it comes out :P

    • paddle008

There isn’t that much difference between Miiverse at launch and npw.

      • Yen

Not visually, but a lot has changed since the first version of Miiverse.

        • paddle008

Ok, but they stopped updating it now.

          • Yen

You might be right, but we don’t know that right now. They might be working on something big for it, or nothing at all. The only thing we know is the mobile app and 3DS app.

  • Tecpedz94

WOW!!! This is the biggest buzz kill. I have been waiting for Miiverse to be on the 3ds since the wiiu came out primarily to fix this horrible friend code issue, its finally coming and it doesn’t even have this feature. WOW Nintendo biggest disappointment i ever had from you…… -_- I’m making a complaint to Nintendo LOL

    • Arthur Jarret

Yeah, same with the shared wallet… it still doesn’t solve the cross buy problem… I can play retail games on both of my 3DS systems, why do I have to buy digital purchases twice?

It’s like they are intentionally stumbling right before the finish line…

      • Tecpedz94

I sent the biggest messages to Nintendo customer service about the friend code thingy lol the response was :

Thank you for taking the time to write to us with your feedback regarding the upcoming MiiVerse application for Nintendo 3DS. I
can certainly understand your thoughts adding friends and sending
messages and want you to know how much we appreciate you sending them in. I also want to assure you that your comments will be added to our records for MiiVerse for the Nintendo 3DS and made available to the appropriate departments at the company. Thank you again for sharing them.

I highly doubt she read my huge email though LOL

        • Arthur Jarret

Yup, standard response no. 324! Anyway – if lots of people e-mail this request, at least they know there’s an audience for the function – and regarding miiverse improvements they’ve shown they listen to the community… so it’s never a bad thing to e-mail them. GJ!

Nintendo may have decided not to go through with messages or friend requests because of the fiasco that happened with spotpass on swapnote. Whatever Nintendo’s reasoning is behind it, I don’t support it. I understand that Nintendo doesn’t want minors sending one another “inappropriate” pictures. However, if that’s the case then the 3DS should have the same requirements as the Wii U. Such as, having to be a certain age on the Wii U to use online services. Nintendo should also figure out a way encourage parents to use their parental controls. Maybe when Nintendo officially release Miiverse on the 3DS, they will have a change of heart, and it will support messages and friend requests.

    • Gabe Hoffman

That could be a reason and I do think the main problem with parental controls is that parents don’t even know they exist or don’t even bother using them. To be honest though cross platform chat is much more difficult than unified accounts in my book

    • Alexander Kleinwechter

I think the main reason for this is just because people on the 3DS shouldnt get confused with the current friend list system the 3DS already has.I dont know how it would work if miiverse on the 3DS could send messeges and friend requests! I think the friend list sytem is preatty good what it is. I actually dont know if you keep the same friends from wii u to the 3DS though!

      • Noah Hood

I wouldn’t mind Nintendo doing away with the friend list system on the 3DS. I also wouldn’t mind if they combined the friend list system on the 3DS with Miiverse. For example, being able to link your 3DS friend code with your Nintendo Network ID. But personally, I don’t think the friend list system is “pretty good.” These friend codes that Nintendo have used since the Wii are not practical. It’s so much easier to search someone by typing in their Name/Username. You can’t even receive a friend request on the 3DS. Two people have to knowingly type in each others friend codes. Miiverse isn’t perfect, but it’s a lot easier and more practical than the friend list on 3DS. I personally, want to have messages on the 3DS version of Miiverse. I want a full-featured Miiverse. Not a watered down version of Miiverse. Nintendo continues to get one thing right. A game console first and foremost, needs to be a game console. However, Nintendo focuses so much on this that it makes their consoles always lack in the multimedia department.

        • Alexander Kleinwechter

Hmm actually now when you say it, it makes sense, i guess i was wrong then. Now i dont really mind if miiverse comes to 3DS.

  • Niknique

    ahh man… well thats a bummer :/

  • Jon

And people whining about this like it will never have it….. the 3DS never had miiverse and now it does, I am pretty sure they will add the features over time.

  • Madmagican

Wait…so we just get to draw stuff and talk about a specific game on 3DS?
    Ouch

    • Gabe Hoffman

Isn’t that the point of Miiverse?

      • Madmagican

…Point taken; but we can’t even make friend requests!!!

  • SleepySkullhead

Probably because Miiverse is connected with the Wii U friend list, and the 3DS has it’s own and doesn’t need that feature.

    • Arthur Jarret

Wii U has it’s own friend list too… I’ve friended people on MH3U that don’t even have a miiverse profile. So that is no deterrent…

I think they’re rushing miiverse due to losing letterbox, and simply haven’t made this function.

  • Mario

    Meh. This can always change.

  • Makakilo_Man

Hey guys. I’m super stoked to get the Zelda 3ds xl next week. My wife, however is not too sold on it. Are there any novice friendly games for the 3ds that I could get that she might like? Any suggestions are welcome.

    • Mario

      Does she like pokemon?

      • Makakilo_Man

        Not too much. . .

    • beerkin

Fire emblem is a really easy casual game.

    • Arthur Jarret

The entire professor layton series is a good entry point in gaming.

      • Makakilo_Man

I’ve thought about this one. It seems simple enough for her to get into.

    • MewThree28

I would say New Super Mario Bros. 2 or Mario Kart 7

      • Makakilo_Man

She really likes mario kart 64. I thnk i’ll pick this one up

    • SleepySkullhead

Get two copies of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (and the Wii U version as well, since it’s worth it) and co-op that. It’s so awesome!

      • Wishsong214

While MH3U is an amazing game, I’m not sure I would recommend it for a novice. Going co-op on it might be a good enough sell, though.

    • Paul Wright

Animal crossing new leaf. You can’t lose in that game. My girlfriend Bought her own 3ds just for that game.

      • Makakilo_Man

Woah! I’m hoping she doesn’t like it that much where she wants to buy another 3ds. That’d hurt the wallet a little too much.

    • Wishsong214

Pokemon is fantastic, and Animal Crossing is just enjoyable. My wife is not too advanced a player, and but she got through/really enjoyed Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Also download Pushmo if she likes puzzlers.

      • Makakilo_Man

Perfect! She likes the luigi mansion mini game on Nintendoland. and I think she’ll enjoy Pushmo. Thanks man!

  • Justagamer

That is a shame but better than nothing

  • darkcreap

Maybe they will add it in the future. Who knows.

    • iLoveXojo

So, maybe they’ll add something that was already there “in the future”? That makes no sense.

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Small Steps.. I am sure it is coming but it cannot happen all at once… So they will give the features of the web version of MiiVerse for now and continue to improve and enhance the service as it matures.

  • beerkin

I’m getting a vita. Nintendo blows.

  • jjbredesen

Dam, i really wanted, the friend code system, to get replaced by the Nintendo network ID syste…. Lets hope that they add this later.

  • MewThree28

I know many people here are disappointed but look, this new unified wallet thing and MiiVerse on the 3ds is just the BEGINNING of what they are planning to do with the account and Eshop system. Trust me guys, they will eventually allow messaging on 3ds and cross platform play with Wii U and 3ds Virtual console

    • Majorfoley

im not optimistic atm as much as i want it to happen

  • Javier Vega

Actually they plan to update their service if you check out the website.Which they already announce a week ago.

  • Yoshi5081

And this how the paid me for buying a 3ds XL -.-
