Eurogamer selects Super Mario Galaxy as its Game of the Generation

Eurogamer has looked at the past generation of gaming and granted Super Mario Galaxy their Game of the Generation title.

Super-Mario-Galaxy-2-Screenshot-15

As we start the wrap up of a gaming generation, it’s natural to look back over the last generation to see which games resonated most with their audience. Eurogamer has been doing just that over the past week and several of the games they’ve discussed so far have been amazing titles. Red Dead Redemption, The Last of Us, and Fallout 3 are all taken through their paces through what they brought to gamers.

Wrapping up their selection of games is the title Game of the Generation, which was given to Super Mario Galaxy. We’re happy to see Super Mario Galaxy getting the recognition it deserves, as it was truly one of the most revolutionary titles that defined this last generation of gaming. Do you agree with this selection? Let us know in the comments and be sure and check out Eurogamer for their assessment of the best games from last generation.

and now Super mario World gonna break it

    • Magnus Eriksson

I dont think so. Its very strange to see that Nintendo decides to change its successful formulas, like Mario64, Galaxy 1&2 and also Zelda. But insisting on keeping the less successful ones as NSMB-series, the Party games etc.

    • The True Gamer

I’m not too sure about that. If Nintendo wanted to truly be innovative, they wouldn’t have released a sequel to a already made 3ds game. I expect okay reviews, but nothing above a 9.25

  • Victor O

Is the image from this story in Super Mario Galaxy 2? Are they referring to Galaxy 1 or 2? I love Galaxy 1 and am just getting started on Galaxy 2.

    • Sideswipe

yes it is super mario galaxy.

    • BIG Franky

the winner was galaxy 1… the above image is from the cover art of galaxy 2…

      • CMB

Galaxy 2 was far better but overall I like both

        • Michael Hancock

          Verily, 2 is far better.

  • Javy G

Easy choice! One and Two are remarkable games!

    • LopsidedPasta

Easy choice? You sir, must only play on Nintendo consoles. This is the best time to be a gamer, and it’s not only because of Nintendo. Saying “easy choice” is just ignorant.

      • Arthur Jarret

Last gen was sooooooo expensive for an owner of DS, PS3 and Wii! I hope production and development time increase and releases decrease so my wallet can recover from the past half decade….

There are also an odd 100 wii, DS and PS3 titles still on my wishlist… where’s a winning lottery ticket when you need one?

        • Shota

ps4 development is gonna be faster

          • audi lover

            Like pc hopefully

          • Arthur Jarret

Yikes… I’m going to have to talk with my boss! And here I was hoping it just meant multiplat porting would be easier while the creation of assets and optimalization of the engine would take up more time.

          • readypembroke

There is always the popular Unity game engine. They are going to have or already have support for: iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Blackberry 10, Windows Phone 8, and Web Browsers. You get Unity for Wii U when you get the Wii U SDK and it is free!

          • Arthur Jarret

Right! I’m currently mucking about with the android version of it. Good fun. I know some coding (good enough to copy-paste and combine stuff without breaking anything) – can create both 2D and 3D graphics and am getting better with cleaning up sound after I recorded it.

Too bad that my animation skills are non-existent (I tried in many programs… from lightwave 3D to toon boom to flash, I just don’t seem to get it.) and I tend to leave large projects unfinished halfway through (I’ve got the first two parts of a trilogy written, I’ve got a rough cut of a stop motion animation, the cabinet and parts of a jukebox made, the designs of a pinball machine etc.)

Unity at least makes indie games a lot easier to develop, luckily: indie devs set fheir prices accordingly which means I can afford all that seem interesting to me. For the current slew of disc based games, I’m having trouble keeping up.

            Darn these first world problems!

        • Andrew Longo

i couldn’t even remember paying that much but i have castlevania:portrait of ruin on DS and the pricetag still on the box says $78! most 3DS games go for 60 here now..

          • Arthur Jarret

I buy a lot used or on sale if I can justify waiting for a game… I’m trying to buy at least two games a week just to keep up with all the releases… usually more to makd some progress on shortening my wanted list.

That list still includes some GB and N64 games. Luckily not all on that list are in the Mario Party 3 price range.

        • The Clockwork Being

You think this current gen is gonna be easier. PS4, Wii U, 3DS are gonna be alot to pay for!

          • Arthur Jarret

It’s starting to become a problem… even now I’ve got a 100 games on my wishlist – and that’s only a small part of what I already own. If next gen has the same quality of games, I’m not only going to need a better job, but a bigger house to stash it all as well.

      • audi lover

So i guess the people who gave the award are ignorant…… Or maybe its just you… Think on that

        • olajuwon_patterson

all he is saying is that there are a lot of good games that came out this generation so it couldnt have been a easy choice

        • LopsidedPasta

See olajuwon above me. I’m pretty sure the judging time period didn’t last 3 seconds, just enough time to get out “Super Mario Galaxy wins”. Lol

      • Javy G

To me it was. It was the only one that left a lasting impression. It has a great adventure built with endless amount of challenges, many unique boss-battles to conquer and the most unusual characters to meet. Not here prove what I games I’ve played on other systems. Just giving credit where credit is due.

        • LopsidedPasta

Of course. And personal preference is one one thing. I just meant that stating factually the best game of a generation (which is kind of impossible anyway) can never be EASY just because of the high quality titles we’re seeing.

          • Justin Gray

If you had the skills and patience to tackle all of Galaxy’s challenges and stages you would appreciate it. The game was great to control and full of content. High quality is a relative term often given to games that people put ten or less hours into and brag on for 10 or more years because that was the sum of their gaming experience.

          • LopsidedPasta

Lol, what are you talking about?

            1) I never said I disliked Mario Galaxy. First fail on your part

            2) So no game is “high quality”? Zelda OOT and Mario Galaxy should be at the same level as Sonic next Gen, right? Why bother rating video games, or even having these competitions in the first place? ALL GAMES ARE CREATED EQUAL!

You need to just stop talking. People like you will just cause problems for those of us with common sense and opinions that can be supported.

          • Justin Gray

            1) I never said you disliked Mario Galaxy there Freudian slipper.
            2) You said that people who think that was an easy choice must only play Nintendo consoles. HMM… Your example of Zelda is funny seeing how it was 2 generations ago. The Zelda offerings on the Wii sucked compared to that game however so it is no wonder you didn’t bring them up.
            3) You say your opinions can be supported and mine cannot? Disprove anything I said or hit the road troll.

          • Justin Gray

BTW Sonic Generations on the 360 got a 6.75 from Game Informer and Mario Galaxy got a 9.75 and the “Game of the Month” award. Talk about common sense: Your arguments are about as absurd as your assessments of anyone who disagrees with you.

          • C4

Sonic Generations is great. At least the 3D levels, which unfortunately is just ~50% of the game. Sonic Colors is okay. The other new Sonic games (haven’t played Lost World yet – but judging by some user impressions it’s a few good levels and a few really bad levels again) are bad IMHO. Thankfully there are not many bad parts in SMG (spring mario?)

          • LopsidedPasta

Lol, you just commented to yourself, bozo. Now you’ll probably delete your comment and copy & paste it under one of mine to save face. What a joke.

          • LopsidedPasta

I was being sarcastic, dingus. Dear God I’ve actually seen preschoolers more aware than you. They can understand sarcasm.

          • LopsidedPasta

look at you comment/ like ratio. Now look at mine. Who are you calling a troll again? You are such a fanboy. Whenever someone doesn’t c*m all over a copy of Galaxy, you start crying and throwing around the word “troll”. Just quit while you’re behind.

            1) You said I didn’t appreciate the game. You couldn’t be more wrong.

            2) Time doesn’t change great games. I can still play OOT and Super Mario Bros for hours to this day.

            3) “High quality is a relative term often given to games that people put TEN OR LESS HOURS INTO and brag on for 10 OR MORE YEARS because that was the sum of their gaming experience.” Lol, I can’t think of anything I’ve only done for 10 hours, that I’ve then gone onto rave about for an entire freaking decade. You want a leap in logic, there you go.

          • Justin Gray

What was your favorite game of this generation? Was it a game that even got on the top ten sales charts for this generation? Mine wasn’t. I enjoyed Xenoblade Chronicles the most even though it has limited re-playability despite a ton of content. I wouldn’t agree that Mario Galaxy is the best game personally. I only called out your original assumption that the original post was a guy who “only plays Nintendo consoles”. I have every major console of the last 2 decades and it so happens that a game on the Wii was the perfect combination of game-play and story that totally enthralled me. Close runners up would be Valkyria Chronicles and Mass Effect. The games I like are far too niche to make any award list but I can see why Galaxy got #1 and I wouldn’t criticize someone who agrees with the choice. I am not here for likes and popularity. I am here for news and enjoyable conversation. I

          • LopsidedPasta

No it wasn’t. I enjoyed several game this generation very much. If HAD to pick a favorite, probably Halo 3.

    • Yobrolo

There is a long list of awesome games in the past generation. So this is a great honour for Mario and should not be taken lightly

  • Nintedward

Mario Galaxy was easily the best game of last gen. That’s saying something because there was tons of masterpieces on all three consoles. But Mario galaxy just destroyed all of the competition hands down.
Anyone who says TLOU, Mass effect, GTAV etc compares to Galaxy in overall perfection is lying to themselves.

I would say Mario galaxy is a strong candidate for the best game ever made.

    • dubYA

Game Rankings agrees, and so do I!

    • CEObrainz

Mario Galaxy is arguably the best game ever made when you look at sites like game rankings. I can see why it’s best game of the generation as I’ve played both 1 and 2, enjoying them fully.

    • Michael Hancock

      2 is better, imo

      • Jacob D. Taylor

I have to agree there. I liked Mario Galaxy but it didn’t invoke any sort of visceral joy to me. Galaxy two however was EXTREMELY difficult to put down. Hours upon hours at any given time.

      • Nintedward

2 is better. But it didn’t have the same wow factor that Mario galaxy had as it came first.
2 was amazing, but 1 was the one that came first, blew everyones socks off and will be remembered more fondly for that.

        • erich80

          Hey, Nintedward!

Nice to see you here! I also agree with the fact that Galaxy 1 had the “wow factor”, while Galaxy 2 didn’t; but, personally, I prefer 2 over 1 as well.

        • Michael Ocampo

I actually played #2 first because when I rented the 1st one… it didn’t work. So I played 2 and got the wow factor for it lol. It’s probably my favorite 3D Mario up to date

    • audi lover

Although the mass effect trilogy is a close.2nd if not joint 1st for cinematic experience and shit saving the human race

    • slade6alpha

LOL at Overrated of Us as GOTG.

    • The True Gamer

I personally think as a game, galaxy one was great, but I think galaxy 2 was more enjoyable. I loved littlebigplanet 2 on ps3, though. It felt like that could be one of the best games of this gen. I just realized how under appreciated media molecule is.

  • The Clockwork Being

Wow really! Was it a close tie between Galaxy 2? Anyways Wii had some of the best games last gen. With games receiving awesome scores such as Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Xenoblade Chronicles and more it is pretty obvious that a Wii game had a lot of chance to snag the game of the generation spot for Eurogamer.

Edit: It must be a shit storm over there at their forums. ”H@RdCore” fans and other system fanboys must be pissed that a Wii game snagged first place.

    • Arthur Jarret

Actually, most european gamers are very mature. There’s only the odd troll or two. Some are disappointed their favorite didn’t make the list at all, but there has been limited debate on wether mario deserves his crown when I last partook in the discussion a few hours ago.

      • Jacob D. Taylor

I call bullshit on that one

        • Arthur Jarret

You see what I mean, us europeans are much too polite to call others out for their obvious bullshit.

          • Jon

lol no, I play against quite a few europeans and they are just as much of an asshole on videos games and forums as someone from NA.

          • Arthur Jarret

Nope, we’re all very polite and if you don’t agree, you can stick it where the sun doesn’t shine and piss off.

          • Jon

I don’t agree because I have played with europeans. Have you ever played League of Legends? They were no different than the players on NA. Same with playing Counter Strike, TF2, BF and MW1. I still heard people whining, raging and complaining about stupid things just like you get on any NA servers. Europeans are not perfect happy people, The riots in many countries there should also tell you that they act no different than anyone else.

          • Arthur Jarret

Wow, the joke went right over your head, didn’t it? A shame, I thought it was pretty funny.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Its a very good game, and probably one of the best its generation . But still nothing compared to Super Mario 64.

    • Yousif Alromaithi

      Sixty four was the bomb.

    • The Clockwork Being

Seeing your comment I am sure you would be keen on a HD remake of that game.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Not really. I think it is good as it is, and would prefer that Nintendo look forward more instead of backwards. N64 games should be released on Virtual Console as old classics and not remakes. But I would like to see another open world, and not so linear 3D Mario again. Maybe bigger “over world” with a part of Mushroom kingdom and enemies as well as different levels.

        • Squid

That would be nice. I still want a 3D Kirby game.

          • Magnus Eriksson

I think they did hint about it in februrary or something? Or am I mistaken? Im not a Kirby fan myself, so I really dont remember.

          • Squid

Oh no, that was 2.5D, which is a 2D side scrolling game in a 3D area. Kinda like Klonoa or Kirby 64

          • Magnus Eriksson

Ah, true. As I said, I didnt pay to much attention to that part. But I agree on a general basis that there must come more 3D games to Wii U. Now that Nintendo has the power to pull off some really awesome stuff it would be sad to see them waste it on alot of platformers and party games. I want the epic stuff as soon as possible. :)

  • john

I love Galaxy 2 as well, but I feel like the first one is entitled to be Game of the Generation because it was totally new and it also had a slightly better soundtrack and a deeper mood. It’s a masterpiece!

  • Shota

mario galaxy is easily one of my best game of all time. The controls where so good. One of the games i coudn’t found cons

    • Pikachief

The controls were one of the reasons I dislike the game D: lol

      • Shota

it felt really balanced. however the control style was different from the games you played before with a different controller. wii mote and nunchuck felt different to play than that with a gamecube controller. it even took me time to getting used to the control of wii mote and nunchuck. once you get used to it, the controls for mario galaxy was the best.

      • Lord Tywin

I agree with you. I disliked the removal of an analog stick controlling the camera. I also didn’t like the longer left analog stick on the Nunchuk. I just wasn’t really a huge fan of the Wii Remote setup compared to the GameCube controller. I do love the Wii U’s controllers and the way the Wii Remote Plus was used for Skyward Sword.

  • Mario

    Woohoo!! I’m the winner!!

    • Squid

      *Breakdances*

    • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

      Mamamia Congratulations Mario

  • D.M.T

I’m one of the few Nintendo fans who never played Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 :( I never bought a Wii that’s why but I’m willing to play it one day because the Wii U is backwards compatible.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Wow, you didnt buy it even through the dry period? :P

      • Mickey Mouse

If you read his post properly you would know he said he didn’t have a Wii then. So he couldn’t have played it through the Wii dry period.

        • Magnus Eriksson

Wii U dry period. You can play Wii games on your Wii U too if you didnt know. And DMT have been here for a while, so I guess he owned one for a while too.

    • andrewjcole

I’ve only played the first one, never got to number two.

  • bizzy gie

Never played either. Going to have to.

  • audi lover

By far, so why no Mario innovation on a new Nintendo console? I just don’t get it

  • Ducked

I’m just glad it wasn’t rewarded to Grand Theft Auto. The most overrated video game series out there.

    • Truthteller

Of course, you would not say that if it had been released on the Wii U! You of course only say that because and COD and other games get all of the press and sales and not Nintendo.

      • shanafan

Huh? COD is on Nintendo consoles..

        • readypembroke

CODs have been on Nintendo consoles since Finest Hour I think. I miss that game!!!!! Activision, please make Finest Hour HD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would totally buy it ASAP!!

      • Ducked

I’m a PlayStation gamer retard. I could careless about GTA period, it’s overrated.

      • Jon

if it was released on Wii U, I probably still would not have GTAV.

      • Squid

CoD is overrated, GTA is better than CoD, but their both pretty overrated.

    • Squid

      Agreed!

  • Pikachief

I feel like I’m one of the very few Nintendo fans that don’t like Mario Galaxy :( I did enjoy Mario Galaxy 2 though and I believe it was better than 1 :)

  • Jared Garcia

Nintendo and Sony have the common ground that it is up to them to show the selling points of their systems. Mario Galaxy was a very good looking game on the Wii given its capabilities. It played well and is something I enjoyed.

  • Elitepwnsface

I did not like the transition from what Mario Sunshine to this. It was definitely a good but not game of the generation. I am going to consider Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyward Sword, Deus Ex HR, Galaxy, MGS4, and Chronoblade in my top 7. There is just so many title that were really good this gen.

  • Lord Tywin

My personal favorite on the Wii was Skyward Sword, but I agree with their choosing of Super Mario Galaxy. On the PlayStation 3, I’d pick the first Uncharted game. For the Xbox 360, I thoroughly enjoyed Alan Wake.

  • discuss

    This game is overrated.

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Hmm I can’t agree nor disagree on that. I never played Mario galaxy games only saw them a few times at my brothers place. It get’s a lot of credit and probably well deserved. A game does not get so much credit for no reason.

And no I won’t be getting Mario galaxy belated either, last gen is history time to walk a new path on the new generations :) My personal favorites last gen? Dark Souls (ps3) and Xenoblade Chronicles (wii).

I simply can’t agree nor disagree on Eurogamer’s choice for the above reason, so I leave it to those who have played the galaxy series to give final judgement.

  • Michael Ngo

The level design, music, creativity – it’s just beyond legendary! Every other games fail to achieve any of this and always want to push “ultra-realism” – the complete opposite of what makes a proper video game.

    • The True Gamer

That was a terrible comment. There are many games that are recognized constantly as incredible games. Just because their not made by Nintendo doesn’t mean their not incredible.

  • slade6alpha

WOO! Back to Wii U Daily! As it should be, Mario Galaxy in GOTG.

  • Justagamer

I think skyward sword would been the best choice

  • TomcaT MeoW

SMG was great, both iterations actually (I finished both w/ 100%). The real thing here was taking the platformer genre and evolving it beyond anything we’d seen to that point. Music for them both was just epic (still catch myself humming the soundtracks every once in a while).

Xenoblade would be my second vote, as combined, my wife and myself have probably put over 400 hours into that game.

Now I’m all excited for SM3DW and X….

    • C4

Yep… as “best Wii game” I think I’d maybe rate Xenoblade higher then SMG.

RPG don’t have it easy for Game of the … choices as you need so much time and often they just click after 5 or 10 hours. A game like SMG will click after 5 minutes for everyone, actually the start with the castle and toads around was great.

  • only god can judge me

Super mario galaxy was definitely a great experience for me I love the idea of playing with mario in space for the first time one can only imagine playing galaxy 3 on the wii u in high definition would be in my eyes even greater it had that whole nolstalgic vibe going with the mario bros 3 music which had me amped up in the beginning running outside the castle to rescue the princess.I personally feel that zelda twilight princess was the best game of last generation which happens to be my favorite game of all time.

  • palomino blue

I was gifted a 360 several years ago with GTA4. That game was really awesome but honestly my copy of Mario Galaxy got more play. And was even revisited recently while the 360 collected dust. I have to agree with this.

  • Sdudyoy

Although It’s a great game but SSBB was far better in my opinion, Skyward sword and Twilight princess where also better (And yes since Twilight princess came out on the Wii I’m still counting it as a last generation game.).

  • Fuzunga

I liked the second one better, but I support this decision nonetheless.

Eurogamer, with digital foundry discover longer loading time with splinter cell black list and lower frame rate with FIFA 13 compare to 360 and ps3, what the freakin hell Nintendo, the other 2 console are 8 year old, always disappointed news from you guys.

    • Andrew Chambers

Nintendo doesn’t control what third parties do. FIFA is and EA game, and since EA doesn’t like Nintendo it’ll always have the crappiest port. As for Splinter Cell, obviously you didn’t do your research on that.

Splinter Cell on the Wii U ran at a higher frame rate then the Xbox one and slightly lower fps then the PS3 version. However, both the Xbox and PS3 version have serious screen tearing issues. Just look at any comparison video in fullscreen. This one’s in slow motion so it’s easier to see.

Now for the loading times. The PS3 version requires an install, so that speeds up the loading time. Disc read speeds are lower on the PS3 then the Wii U and Xbox. I believe it’s something like PS3: ~16 Mb/s, Xbox: ~19 Mb/s, and Wii U: ~22 Mb/s. And the Xbox version has lower textures when not installed. So the fact that the Wii U version only takes about 30 seconds longer to load yet doesn’t have to be installed to look good and has great V-sync with no screen tearing is fine with me.

    Nice Choice ;D

  • The True Gamer

I’d choose halo 4, halo: reach, super Mario galaxy 2, or littlebigplanet 2

  • fireheartis1

See Eurogamer just proved you didn’t need HD graphics to make a wonderful game. There were many great games this generation and Mario Galaxy to me was the best one to come out innovation wise. Sure we had game like Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 3, and The Last of Us, but those are essentially shooters which were ramped this generation of gaming. The only game to me that had shooter elements that came close to Super Mario Galaxy was Uncharted 3. That game was a great adventure game.

  • val berger

absolutely great choice. at a time when noone thought, you could really innovate this old genre, Nintendo came up with someone you just NEEDED to play once you saw it. Amazing work, amazing use of contemporary technology. One of the greatest games of all time.

    • C4

Mhh I like it more for the platforming and camera (which were a hindrence in SMS platforming – still not perfect IMHO) and not any “innovation”.

  • readypembroke

Hopefully I don’t sound like a party pooper, but I never played Super Mario Galaxy 1 or 2. Might in a couple of weeks get the first one just to see what the huge talk is about.

  • ATherohatch

Great game! really wanna see sunshine 2 made!

  • farrellbr

They should remake this as HD

  • farrellbr

Also They should create zelda twilight princess

  • Dáibhí wotshissurname

I’m very glad as Nintendo won nothing at the Golden Joysticks. Really? No awards for Handheld game of the Year? AC LIBERATION WTF?!?!

When I saw this on Eurogamer the other day, I couldn’t help but laugh just a little. Since Wii U’s release, they have shown a talent in playing to the majority in their bias against the platform.

But after seeing positive article after positive article on Xbox 1 (obviously they enjoy some kind of endorsement set up with MS) only to see the amount of backlash towards the system during recent COD and BF4 comparisons, polarising opinions even more in favour of PS4 it became apparent that partly for this reason, Wii U’s arguable turnaround and SM3DW’s almost universally positive reception, they were enjoying a change in opinion.

It was interesting to see them perform a 360 manoeuvre, right in front of us..

    Classic.

Can’t be different. See metacritics or any other aggregator and look which game is #1… Saying anything else means worldwide websites and reviews have no importance. Mario Galaxy is the very symbol of Wii dominantion. Haters can just accept this.

    I’ll agree with that.

With generation seven being littered with awful games that didn’t deserve the praise they received, it’s good to see that Super Mario Galaxy, a game that is truly deserving of all it’s praise, was named game of the generation.

This is possibly sacrilege here, but Fallout 3 was the best game of the last generation.

I say its Halo 3 for me, the multiplayer was incredible and the set pieces in the single player rocked.

I couldn’t disagree with this. I love this game so much and the musical score is just genius!
