Kamiya’s New Years resolution hints at a new project

kamiya

New Years is a popular time for many to make resolutions about what they want to see and do for the year ahead of them. Kotaku asked several Japanese developers what they’d like to do next year and among the list was Platinum Games’ Hideki Kamiya. Kamiya says his main goal is to make sure he’s having fun while working on the game with his team, but also this important tidbit:

Also, 2014 will be the year where a new project will fully be set in motion. I want to boldly and happily walk that path without fear of failure.

Kamiya doesn’t drop any further hints as to what he could possibly be working on. What would you like to see from Kamiya and the team at Platinum Games?

I want another The wonderful 101 game.

    • Mickey Mouse

So do I, but I fear the low sales of the first one will prevent it happening. :-(

      • Fred

I still don’t understand how that game didn’t sell over a million copies. Everyone was clamoring for a new IP and this one is a super fun new IP, yet nobody bought it. I’m glad I did.

        • HungryMetroid

I think it’s due to it being the type of game a lot of people have to play for themselves or have to be explained in detail to understand what it’s like. I didn’t understand the gameplay or want it until I watched the special Nintendo Direct.

        • tom

Some good news. As of 14 Dec the wonderful 101 game has sold 110k( by no means and awesome number but improved) . I am sure with Christmas the game got a bit of a bump.

          • Fred

I really hope you’re right. I can tell you though, I have several friends with Wii Us and I haven’t been able to convince ANY of them to get W101. The one even played the demo and LOVED it, but he hasn’t purchased the game.

        • DragonSilths

Cause it doesn’t matter. Nintendo haters say WE WANT NEW IP’s. News flash Nintendo could ONLY do new IP’s for a generation and they wont sell. Cause they simply don’t want to support Nintendo.

    • uPadWatcher

      The Wonderful 102, I assume…?

    • darkcreap

I recently finished The Wonderful 101. While I liked it, I think there are some things I would change in a future game.

I liked the drawing mechanics, but some times it was a little difficult to get the right shape on the gamepad (some times the game did not recognise the shape I wanted to draw).

I also did not like the fact that you could not die or that there was no punishment in the game for dying. I mean, you could die and you did not lose any progress. I don’t mind having infinite lives, but I like the game to punish me in some way, like making me start a boss again or sending me back to the last checkpoint. EDIT: That leaves a better feeling of accomplishment.

EDIT: Minor grammar mistake. “Recognised” by “recognise”.

      • ScrewAttack

I do agree, just wanted to note that it punishes you by harming your score for each mission and overall score for the operation. For people after full total platinums, that’s punishment enough :p

      • ScrewAttack

        • darkcreap

Thanks for your observation ;). Yes, I am aware of that. Problem is that I am a bit of a classic guy in that respect.

    • DragonSilths

The Wonderful 202 lol. Though while I am in the minority, I hated the gameplay of W101. Loved the story, humor and cut scenes. But every time I was playing I was like uhg I hate this so much. Wonderful 101 should have been an anime instead of a game.

  • darkcreap

    Starfox!!!! Please, Starfox!!!!

    • Yousif Alromaithi

Kamiya making star fox is a dream come true he said he wanted to work on it a while back before changing his mind so please Nintendo make him work on it.

      • crocodileman94

I’m sure that “changing his mind” was just something he said to make the Starfox fanboys shut up.

        • DragonSilths

Miyamoto said Nintendo doesn’t want to let anyone outside of Nintendo do F-Zero or Starfox. So unless Nintendo finally made a smart decision and realized they got no ideas but Kamiya does, to let him make it I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Ninetendo can do anything but they want to try something new.

          • Madmagican

So what if Nintendo buys Platinum for the hell of it?

          • DragonSilths

Not Nintendo’s style to buy a company just for the hell of it.

          • Relick

            They already practically own Platinum.

          • DragonSilths

That’s just cause Platinum says working with Nintendo is like working with family.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

They have to have part ownership to even qualify as actually owning them. :P

          • Madmagican

Well there’s various ways in which Platinum could be beneficial to Nintendo and they’ve already had a bit of a partnership that’s still going on

          • Nathan Verbois

StarFox Assualt was co-developed with Namco. F-Zero GX was co-developed with Sega. Was it after these GameCube games that Miyamoto made that statement? Both of those games were well received, F-Zero in particular.

          • Ibi Salmon

Wasn’t Starfox assault considered to be the worst game in the series?

          • DragonSilths

No, Starfox Command was the worst Starfox game. Though much like Starfox Adventures they both weren’t even supposed to be Starfox games, they just turned them into ones. Some say Starfox 64 is the best but that’s just nostalgia, I still love 64 but Assault was just awesome. Sure not perfect but still really good. Its kinda like Metroid Other M, some hated it, some liked it.

          • Ibi Salmon

Huh. Personally, I didn’t find Command to be all that bad. You were flying around shooting things and the strategy elements worked pretty well.

I never played Assault so it could be as good as you say it is. I’m just going by what other people told me about the game.

          • DragonSilths

Starfox Command was an okay* game in general, but as a Starfox game it was the worst.

          • Ibi Salmon

            If you say so.

          • DragonSilths

It was like a year ago maybe, when Miaymoto said that.

            Edit:
            Yeah June so last E3.

            http://mynintendonews.com/2013/06/20/miyamoto-says-dont-expect-a-new-f-zero-any-time-soon/

          • Nathan Verbois

Ah, thanks. You know, now that they have the power of the Wii U to work with and seeing how stunning SM3DW is at just 1.6GB of data, maybe my idea/dream of a StarFox game in the style of Freelancer (and now Star Citizen) could actually happen!

          • DragonSilths

No problem. And I don’t know about Freelancer, never heard of it, I looked up, not sure I would want Starfox to go in that direction.

          • Nathan Verbois

When I say Freelancer and Star Citizen, I mean mostly the go anywhere, huge galaxy of planets to investigate and fly to. It would still be StarFox in action, but you could just fly anywhere you wanted. You could fast travel by the normal intergalactic map, or whatnot, but there would be exploration, and slight economics and upkeep (though mostly optional if you just want the action. It would be free roaming for the most part, though for high action/nostalgia value, there could still be plenty of on-rails sections.

          • DragonSilths

Okay then. I would also like that in Metroid. Actually flying in Space and having to fight stuff on your way to your destinations aka other planets or ships and such.

          • Nathan Verbois

Ha! I actually thought of the same thing for Metroid as well. Forgot I had though. Thanks for reminding me!

          • DragonSilths

            No probs.

          • Nathan Verbois

I just like the idea of expanding these game universes a bit, but only if the high level of quality can be retained. Not that that is too much of a worry with Nintendo.

        • Magnus Eriksson

I think he said so because he is a diva queen to high on himself.

      • darkcreap

Yeah, I am with crocodileman94 there. I think he said it just so people would stop pestering him in the social networks. I don’t think he would just say no to a dream come true for being pissed off by some fans.

    • Luciano

      “We need your help Nintendo!
You’re the only hope for our world!”

      • LordYukYuk

        What idiot downvoted this? LOL

  • uPadWatcher

I want to see PlatinumGames do a Bayonetta spinoff for the Nintendo 3DS– Jeanne.

  • kinghenroc187

you guys are forgetting something? that mean that bayonetta 2 is done or almost done and we about to get a release date im f****** hipe….

    • C4

Bayonetta 2 Hashimoto is director, Kamiya only looks over the project as far as I remember, it’s not “his” unlike the first Bayonetta or TW101.

    • Fred

Not Spring though. The last Nintendo Direct was for games coming by Spring 2014 and there wasn’t any mention of it.

      • kinghenroc187

        u right

      • DragonSilths

So? Dr. Luigi was out of the blue here you go its out right away lol. With Nintendo logic is useless, Bayonetta could be May.

        • Fred

I can’t argue with that. Honestly I’m not interested in Bayonetta 2. The game I was really hoping to hear about is X

          • Fred

Of coarse it’s mostly because I got incredibly sucked into Xenoblade.

          • DragonSilths

            I see.

  • Justagamer

I wish he could do metriod

  • kinghenroc187

and i think he should work on metroide prime first before starfox

    • DragonSilths

Metroid is Retro Studios. And Metroid has been more frequent, Starfox has been absent for 9 years.

  • jdiaz1994

I just want Nintendo to buy Platinum so that only they can get the Platinum games.

    • darkcreap

I think I read somewhere that Platinum games was founded by several people so they could have a studio to make the kind of games they liked. I think that being bought by Nintendo, despite the fact that I would love it, would be against that philosophy.

Nevertheless, yes, I think that Nintendo buying Platinum would be great (if Nintendo uses well their great potential unlike Microsoft did with Rareware).

      • Nickdawg

I don’t know about that, I think Nintendo’s one of the good companies as far as letting second party titles keep their artistic vision, we know with Microsoft they had too big a hand in Nuts and Bolts and that was a mess, I don’t believe Ninty would do the same, I think Platinum’s original vision of making games the way they want could very well remain in tact, look at Bayonetta 2, Nintendo didn’t ask them to tone that one down for younger audiences, I think that’s how the rest of their relationship would be, and we’d see a LOT more Platinum Games games because they’d have a steady publisher and platform, unlike when they were sorta-with Sony, sorta-not.

        • TaintedXGamer

tone it down? since when Nintendo tones things down, i mean sure Most of their can be Enjoy by family and practically All ages, but by no means do they “tones games down”. perhaps it’s just me but if they “tone down” their IPs would we get Quality?

          • darkcreap

Nintendo has a history of forcing 3rd parties into controlling what they display in their games to avoid troubles. They enforced such a policy especially during the 90s, because there was a lot of social debate about how videogames influence children’s behaviour or how harmful they could be back then. Basically, Nintendo trying to be “family friendly” in that sense lead them to be too strict.

This policy pissed some third parties, who had to tone down videogames to not be too violent and such, for instance. Nevertheless, this is supposed not to happen anymore (or at least they have become much more flexible).

          • Nickdawg

Thank you for summing that portion up. :P One specific and even recent example is an indie title we’re supposed to be receiving soon called Un-Epic, the devs have said some quests and dialogue needed to be cut because Nintendo asked them to. Still, I think Nintendo wouldn’t do that now to Platinum Games with the way Bayonetta is coming along, I think they trust Platinum and understand some games need to have creative freedom.

          • darkcreap

Ahm, yes. Un-Epic was cut down due to their religious jokes, correct? Nintendo fears they would offend someone with them.

      • abe

i’m sure i once saw that they said they’d be open to be a second party for nintendo

  • Tekina Sibawo

    METROID. someone. Please!

    • uPadWatcher

Imagine a Metroid title using the Vanquish engine…

  • Petri

Then again, he might be just trolling…

  • starwars360

STAR FOX!!!! Ouch let wait and see. Maybe The Wonderful 102? Maybe new IP game for Wii U!!!

Hopeful it is Wii U title. :)

  • Hulkamania

    MadWorld for Wii U… yes

    • iamserious

      Hell yes.

  • Oliver Barraza

I would $hit my pants if they made the next Star Fox. Hands down one of the coolest Nintendo IPs.

    • DragonSilths

As long as its not typical Platinum, where its a bazillion things going on at once.

      • Oliver Barraza

I think Nintendo would have a good hand on it :)

        • DragonSilths

Hopefully. But I want Namco to assist. I loved Starfox Assault.

  • Fred

Star Fox U!!! I really want Wonderful 102, but not yet.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

With the poor sales of 101, I don’t see it happening anytime soon.

      • Fred

I wish I could argue with that statement, but I’ve seen the numbers and even though the game is incredible, it flat out didn’t sell. What about Star Fox U though I don’t see why that couldn’t happen.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

I can see Star Fox happening. There’s a demand for it. A 101 sequel seems unlikely at this point. Any Nintendo fan would rather see a new Star Fox than 101.

          • Fred

I can agree with you. Although overall I like W101 a little more than Star Fox, because I haven’t had W101 for very long I’d like to have several years pass before W102 (although I do still hope it eventually sells enough to justify a sequel). So I also would rather see a new Star Fox right now.

  • lonewolf88

STARFOX STARFOX STARFOX STARFOX STARFOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OR METROID!

  • Flawless Victory

OMG! Please be a new Starfox! Please!

  • Jack5221

    WONDERFUL 101 SEQUEL!!! PLEASE!!!!

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

    good luck whit that

  • crocodileman94

    Wonderful 102

  • Flawless Victory

If Platinum Games comes out with Vanquish 2…I’d immediately buy that game Day 1. A new Starfox and a new Metroid I’d buy Day 1 regardless. I’d be pump for a sequel to the Wonderful 101, or if PG decides to do a whole new IP we have never seen before I’m up for it.

  • Carlos Coronado

If it is on Wii U ill buy it

  • Mohammad Badir

Starfox, but i also think a Kid Icarus could really fit these guys, Sakurai isn’t intereted in a sequel so i hope these guys would make one for the WiiU

  • Tim van Broekhoven

A sequel to Okami for the Wii U!

    • FutureFox

Not happening since Okami is owned by Crapcom.

  • Starfoxguy

Please be Starfox!!!! None of us haven’t played a brand new installment since 2006.

    • extremethunder

If Starfox (we can all hope can’t we :P ), please let it be more like the StarFox64… just on a grander scale

      • DragonSilths

Combination of Starfox 64 and Assault. 64 wasn’t the best, its only the nostalgia.

  • lonewolf

Nintendo buying Platinum is not as bad idea as everybody thinks for example they bought monolift soft and they left them alone to make their games (xenoblade chronicles and now X)

  • Cube

yea, I love StarFox,, N64 version is the best version though.

    • DragonSilths

      Nostalgia.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I kinda liked Adventures a bit. 64 was a classic, though.

  • wiimenonowiiu

How about a trophy of something like that with nintendo level

  • Guesty Pooh!

An F-Zero spinoff using the Wonderful 101 engine starring Captain Falcon and the rest of the characters, just before they release F-Zero U.
That way they give us the back story to the characters so we connect with them more while we play F-Zero!
    Instabuy.

  • David Trail

A Vanquish/ Starfox cross over game???

  • DC777

Eh…whatever it is not waiting 5 years for it.

  • Colonel campbell

    Hopefully a starfox sucessor

  • Victor Vieira

Am I the only one who wants Viewtiful Joe 3, from Platinum Games?

  • TaintedXGamer

As long as you guys don’t annoy him, -still loling at those multiplats fanbois wanters-
    I’m good, I’m good. :3

  • Rinslowe

I just want to see bayonetta 2 mate, please.
    :) Thanks.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

You just want her to do sexual poses is all. Don’t deny it.

      • Rinslowe

“You just want her to do sexual poses is all.”

LOL. That was – the – saddest thing I think you’ve ever written on Wii U Daily, Gonzalez. You crazy!

        Haha… OMG
        o_O

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Saddest thing because you know it’s true? That’s why you responded to it and are trying to laugh it off. I don’t see how a simple joke is the saddest thing ever written. It may be that you just have poor humor. It’s not so crazy afterall, now is it? I thought as much. ;P

          • Rinslowe

” It may be that you just have poor humor.”

Are you just upset because I found your particular brand of “humour” sad and tasteless?
Do I want to see Bayonetta in how YOU put it “sexual poses”? Can you not see how sad that was? LOL… O_O
I genuinely feel sorry for you. Trying to show humour but being so tasteless about it. Saddest of all is that you have described yourself so well within the above quote! … Ha.

Oh Gonzalez, you so sensitive and juvenile.
            :)

          • Daniel Gonzalez

” It may be that you just have poor humor.”

Oh Gonzalez, you so sensitive and juvenile.”
            :)

Oh Rinslowe, always trying to play it like you don’t have these sorts of fantasies. You’re so sad. Lol. It’s nice to think that I’m upset, but the fact that you clearly try this hard to defend yourself shows how sensitive and juvenile you really are, but it’s cute of you to be this desperate.

The fact that you think a certain sense of humor is tasteless and sad means you either don’t like jokes, or just lack the humor to comprehend it. Which shows all the way to your first response back. Or perhaps it’s the person who is saying it? That’s quite a plausible theory. Yeah, yeah, I know. You’ll deny that too. :P

It’s okay Rinslowe, one day you’ll appreciate humor like the rest of the world. You do humor me at the very least. No need to be so down and bitter before New Years. Cheer up! :)

          • Rinslowe

“Oh Rinslowe, always trying to play it like you don’t have these sorts of fantasies”

Funny, you’re the only one writing about fantasies Gonzalez, lol.
Are you trying to deny that? If so, please point out where I actually wrote a word implying fantasy.
            :)

          • Spike Ashford

Can’t we just all agree that Bayonetta is a Sex-Goddess and her game – soon to be “games” – are fucking awesome?

          • Rinslowe

We can agree that Bayonetta 2 is looking to be an absolute gem of a game and it’s too long between now and release IMO!
            :)
Actually that is what I was going for in the original comment. The rest wasn’t planned on my behalf to derail that point…
Stink really, that that happened as it did. :(

          • Rinslowe

“It’s okay Rinslowe, one day you’ll appreciate humor like the rest of the world.”

Are you claiming to be “the rest of the world”?
Lol, Because you are neither funny nor in possession of a worldly humour.
            :)

          • Rinslowe

” but the fact that you clearly try this hard to defend yourself shows how sensitive and juvenile you really are”

Parroting or imitating is the highest form of flattery! I am pleased…
BTW, I’m that far under your skin aren’t I Gonzalez, LOL! Is that your wall of meh in defence to my comments? I think so!
            :)
I am very happy, enjoying the new year! Your own happiness however requires your immediate attention. Just worry about yourself.
            :^)

  • iamserious

If it’s from Platinum Games then it ought to be pretty good. I’m also still waiting to hear about Myamoto’s new IP.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

      Super Call of Duty U.

      • iamserious

        Lol I hope not!

  • Mithiragi

Make a new game for R.O.B. Gyromite 2.

  • Flawless Victory

    Anticipation is mounting!

  • Virus6

Would be amazing if it was Star Fox. The only reason I have this hunch is because of Kamiya saying he wanted to do something with the franchise but was afraid of not reaching Nintendo’s expectations and failing and as such decided to drop it.

“I want to boldly and happily walk that path without fear of failure.”

Let this be his commitment to making that game!

  • majora :D

Anticipation is growing, in the end Kamiya announces Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze 2, fans rage, they get excited over a new random rumor, and repeat

  • Caitlin♂

Can’t wait to see what this new project will be.

  • Blugrave

Please make that Wonder Blue spin off title. It’d be truly Wonderful!

  • Mitch Hall

There’s no telling what he’s working on, but I’m sure it will be something good. I mean, this is the guy who directed MadWorld, Okami, Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 2… and The Wonderful 101, of course.
