Masahiro Sakurai explains the lack of Super Smash Bros. news

Masahiro Sakurai explains why there hasn't been any Smash Bros news for the past few days.

daily

Perceptive readers may have noticed that the official Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS website hasn’t been updated with new pictures or information for the past few days. This might some as a surprise to some readers as, until recently, the site had updated regularly every weekday.

What people who only follow the Super Smash Bros website might not know though is that every image posted there is also posted on Miiverse as well, by Masahiro Sakurai himself. On Miiverse each image comes with a message commenting on the picture. This week Sakurai helpfully decided to let us know:

The pic of the day that runs Monday through Friday will be on break starting Dec. 27. I’ll be back on Jan. 6, so I hope everyone has a happy new year!!

So we’ll all have to wait until next year to get any new Super Smash Bros. information. Everyone needs a break now and then, so it’s good to hear Sakurai is taking some time off for the New Year.

What Super Smash Bros. news are you hoping we hear next year? Are there any stages or characters you’re hoping get announced? On an unrelated note, do you have any plans for the new year? Any interesting New Year’s Resolutions? Let us know in the comments! And happy New Year everybody!

  • Laud

Where’s the part where he explains why there’s a lack of SSB news?

Telling us they’d be on break isn’t necessarily an explanation :P

  • Sdudyoy

I only follow the Smash bros pictures through Miiverse so I already knew this.

    • Wren Justin Umlauf

Doesn’t commenting on this article prove that you follow it here too?

      • David Noble

Wii U Daily doesn’t follow every picture added to SmashBros.com, so he
wasn’t really following it necessarily. Plus, whether or not he ONLY
followed the Miiverse one would not affect it. He still knows.

      • Sdudyoy

While that’s partly true, but when I clicked on this article I assumed it was something new as this news was a couple days old, plus I was really talking about the smash bros site.

  • PS4/WiiU

on another note, wii u just beat xbox one hardware sales this week :)

    • HungryMetroid

      source?

      • darkcreap

I think he means vgchartz.com, hardware sales for December 21st:
        http://www.vgchartz.com/

In X1′s defense, I must say that it is unfair if we take into account that X1 has not been released yet in Japan and WiiU has. Nevertheless, I do not expect it to sell a lot in Japan anyway (except maybe in launch). X360 has sold traditionally badly on Japan and probably X1 will have the same problem.

Another interesting thing in that week is that PS4 is selling double than WiiU. Maybe it is still the launch window effect, but maybe it is the console of choice this Christmas, who knows.

Nevertheless, I’d like to see what happens after Christmas and see which of the consoles actually have momentum after that.

EDIT: I write the numbers from vgchartz.com:

        PS4: 656,655
        WiiU: 319,860
        X1: 307,366

By the way, 3DS is selling like crazy: 1,078,568

        • Mario

          Wow, That is crazy.

          • Shigeru Miyamoto

            Yes, it is.

        • Madmagican

Yeah, the Microsoft consoles are officially dead in Japan :)
I’d be surprised if the X1 even makes it to Japan

          • Dimitri Theodosakis

Microsoft should hold off Release Xbox One in Japan till FFXV Gets Dated for Japan

        • tronic307

If Xbone were released in Japan it might sell more than the 360, but quickly taper off to 5 or 4 figures a week. This is likely their most Japanese friendly console to date, but I don’t know if Microsoft wants to try again after the pummeling they took in Japan with the Xbox and Xbox 360. The Xbox brand is just too ‘western’.

    • LopsidedPasta

Even if that’s true, the XB1 is sold out EVERYWHERE. There’s no lack of Wii Us.

      • Laud

There was a lack of stock in wal-mart in the U.S. during christmas, and there’s been a constant low stock in Japan for a few weeks.

      • Schultz38

I see the X1 everywhere. My local Target, Wal-Mart and Gamestop all have X1′s in stock.

        • LopsidedPasta

Really? Maybe my area is the exception then.

          • audi lover

Buy xb1 everywhere no ps4 tho:(

      • Wren Justin Umlauf

But I kind of doubt people go to the store and go “Oh they are sold out of Xboxs… Guess I’ll just get a Wii U”

        • LopsidedPasta

Lol, did I ever say they did? Bob wants a XB1. Larry wants a Wii U. Bob’s out of luck, so his potential purchase of a XB1 isn’t counted. There are plenty of Wii Us in stock though, so Larry can purchase a Wii U and his purchase is counted in weekly totals. Geez man. Think before typing! This is 3rd grade stuff!

          • Wren Justin Umlauf

Your right, I miss interpreted your comment. Guess I shouldn’t comment when I’m tired =P

          • LopsidedPasta

No problem bro. I was kind of being an ass anyway. My bad :)

        • Mendoza Manuel

          <3

          • Wren Justin Umlauf

            Umm thanks? lol

      • Jon

the Eb games in my town has 9 Xbox ones. and if I drive an hour to the capital of my province, they are everywhere with most stocks having at least 3 stocked. On the day after Boxing day however, I was at Future shop and there was no Wii U’s as they were sold out but PS4 and Xbox ones were available though stock was low especially the PS4.

        • LopsidedPasta

Aren’t EB games and Boxing day Canadian things? Do you live there? Because if so, than the console situation there is VERY different than here in the states. At least in Texas, Wii Us are everywhere, but either of the other consoles is sold out only a couple of hours after being put on store shelves. It’s pretty crazy!

          • Jon

Stores are closed on boxing day here, it is the day after they open. When I was down in Maine, there was still consoles in the target stores, though all three systems where there in decent stock. The console situation is basically the same in both Canada and US.

      • Virus6

Really? I work for Target and we have a TON of X1s.. like… 20+. Our supply is always full. Our Wii U’s have been selling far better than those.

      • Relick

It is not even sold out in the UK, where it is XBox land. You must be in an exception.

Also according to these stats are you trying to say that Microsoft has worse production lines than Nintendo’s? Really? (of course it could be planned limiting, in which case I ask Microsoft why they are bothering at this point when the WiiU, a ‘dead’ console is outselling it now).

      • Falcoxcalibur

Sold out everywhere? Not in my city. Here you can come and buy an Xbox One in any gaming store. As a matter of fact, in Mexico they have already reduced its price by 50 dolars.

        • Falcoxcalibur

On a side note, Wii U Legend of Zelda bundles who were available before the holidays, are now gone from the shelves.

    • greengecko007

Why does who outsells who matter? Isn’t it enough that you have your system of preference? You people don’t like to read articles when the Wii U isn’t selling well…

      • Rinslowe

        ” You people”
        You’re smarter than that…

I agree 100% about just being happy with the system/ systems of preference…
True fanboyism is such a drag.

      • Relick

It matters a lot. If it sells badly I have very few people to play it online with. If it sells badly, third party devs won’t support it and I won’t get games I want to play. If it sells badly, Nintendo will be forced to discontinue it early and I’ll have to buy another console.

In fact the only good thing that may come out of bad sales is that the first party games will be even more exceptional in an effort to get people to buy the thing.

        Sales aren’t just a fanboy’s tool, they are a businessman’s too.

        • greengecko007

Sales have been increasing for a while now. It’s fine to celebrate that, but I’m curious as to why sales proportional to the competition matter so much to fans. Outselling the new Xbox doesn’t equate to more people on the Wii U, more third party support, or Nintendo not discontinuing the console (which they wouldn’t and don’t need to do anyway).

    • tronic307

Also unrelated: Wii U is Wii pronounced forward then in reverse. “Wii iiW”!

      *Mind=Blown*

      • PS4/WiiU

damn, I never thought of that before
        My mind is blown

      • rp17

I found that out when I said Wii U in a recording and when i played it backwards it still said Wii U

        • tronic307

Exactly. Try this on your 3DS, folks.

  • Flawless Victory

It’s cool…I can wait until next year.

Fair comment speaking for yourself. But the opposite I say!

  • Sydney Ultrasyd

Anyway, I think they already gave way too much infos. I mean, screenshots each week. It’s like we have no surprise at all when the game is released. I love to be surprised. So I’m fine with a bit less infos … but on the other hand … JUST SHOW ME MORE ABOUT X !!

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

i’m not upset every person needs a break happy 2014

    • Shota

sakurai isn’t taking a break. he said that on famitsu

      • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

        1. Shota yes he’s taking a break 2. what the heck is famitsu

        • Shota

japanese gaming magazine. sakurai is also a editor. love reading famitsu! :)

  • Zizo47

Can’t wait for them to announce Goku xD

    • Virus6

      They never will

      • Zizo47

Apparently, I’ve hurt some feelings around here… And here I thought Nintendo fan-boys were optimists

        • Virus6

It’s not because anyone is butthurt, it’s just that Goku isn’t even eligible according to Sakurai himself. The character is supposed to have origins in a videogame. Goku doesn’t OBVIOUSLY seeing as he was around in the 80s in manga.

          • Zizo47

Because that’s why I play Super Smash Bros, for the deep stories behind the characters… Aaaaabsolute rubbish

          • Virus6

You should be playing Smash for Nintendo mascots kicking the crap out of each other. Goku is not a Nintendo mascot and is quite possibly the furthest thing from it.

          • Zizo47

I do play it for that BUT it doesn’t hurt to add some variety… I thought Solid Snake was a surprising and welcome addition to SSB, he wasn’t a Nintendo mascot now, was he?

          • Virus6

The thing about him is the Metal Gear series started out on the NES.

          • Zizo47

I knew you’d say that. Still, he’s not a mascot though. I still think there’s hope for Goku, seeing as Namco Bandai is supporting development. That is unless Sakurai has already shot him down…

  • sup3rnoah

This article Sakurai tells tons of new info lately on smash bros, take a read: http://www.gamnesia.com/news/tons-of-new-smash-bros.-details-bowser-balance-and-depth

  • greengecko007

Lack of news? This is the one game Nintendo is managing to keep the hype running with! I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m not expecting major reveals every couple of days. Just continue on with developing. The screenshots and reveals he gives us are a privilege, not a God given right.

  • jjbredesen

Happy new year guys :D, Sakurai-San deserves a break to, so this is not really bad news or anything.

    • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

if he’s not get a break Super Smash Bros. For 3DS/Wii U will not be available in 2014

  • Geoffrey Tasker

    2 things
1: as a avid Street fighter player going a week without news is child’s play lol

2: I work at Best buy and we have plenty x bones in Stock. What’s hard to find right now is the ps4

    • Virus6

I work at Target and there are two full display cases of the X1s, and yet we are low stock on Wii U and out of PS4s.

  • Virus6

The funny thing is that he probably isn’t actually taking time off. It’s known that Sakurai is a workaholic and that he usually works on his days off to catch up on lost time.

    • Mario

Oh for Christ’s sake! He must at least have some time off sometime!

      • Virus6

You’d think so… but probably after he completes his game he’ll take his break. He did the same thing with Brawl. Practically worked himself to death.

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

    Happy 2014

  • andrewjcole

Posting pictures everyday and posting it on the site EVERYDAY!? He deserves a break. Then there’s development taking place.

HAPPY NEW YEAR HERE AND SAKURAI AND SSB!!! :D

So exciting about SSB in 2014. Maybe another secret characters pop into SSB and new arenas for battle and maybe Sakurai made himself in SSB so we play as him in there. Hahahahaha :P

  • God1st

After previously purchasing the wii u a few days ago to give a try for myself I must say it is. A pretty innovative console yet however it has fail to impress and capture my wholehearted interest. There’s nothing really compelling that the wii u offers that the ps3 or xbox360 cannot do other than the tablet controller which from my own experience does nothing other than mirror what’s on the tv screen or show a checklist of itemswhich takes away from gaming when I rather focus on what’s on the big screen. My advice to future wii u customers is if you are a diehard fan. Of nintendo then wii u is for you and if not save your hardearn money and invest in a ps4 or xbox one.Nintendo has created a system that’s is on par with 360 and ps3 which both have better 3rd party support than wii u will ever have.I traded my wii u back in to gamestop for store credit that I will use towards a xbox one or ps4 and in the meantime I rather game on my360.

    • I am Error.

I hope you give it more chances to impress you.
After playing over 20 disc games and dozens of digital indie titles I really do love this system. While it’s true, the pad itself varies in usefulness from game to game, there’s always potential in it. I know its specs get a lot of heat, but at the end of the day, for me anyway, it’s all about the games and the fun I have with them. I’ve been very impressed with the early PS4 titles I’ve tried, but as impressive as the visuals are I’d still rather be at home racing through a level in Super Mario 3D World.
It may never catch your wholehearted interest and that’s okay. The more systems we have to choose from the better =)

      • God1st

U said things from a good logical perspective yet I honestly feel that nintendo drop the ball with the wii u and were not ready for this generation in terms of technology and what it takes to drive the market in a high definition area sure they will have great games in the mario and zelda realm of things which is always the case but for a well rounded gamer like myself nintendos offers the worst 3rd party support in gaming and I love zelda but I am not just going to wait to 2 or 3 years to play zelda then wait another 3 to 4 years for another zelda to come out playstation and xbox not only have good first party exclusives but great third party support also which leaves the wii u behind when the ps4 and xbox one grow stronger in terms of technology the wii u will be outdated if they did not receive third party support by theirself for a whole year they will definitely not see it now that ps4 and xbox one is here and the developers see what they’re systems are capable of wii u is a system for diehard nintendo fans that love to play mario and zelda unfortunately for me I have grown out of that phase I’m investing into a ps4 or xbox one.

I think that there should be Bayonetta in the game. After all, her sequel game is a Wii U exclusive.
