Wii U is the second best selling console in Japan this week

super-mario-3d-world-wii-u-4

Numbers for this week’s hardware and software sales in Japan are now available and the Wii U claims the second spot this week with nearly 29k consoles sold in the region. That’s a jump up from only 21k last week, when Super Mario 3D World was released. As we originally speculated, it looks like the title will be a long tail for Nintendo, so we hope we continue to see this rise in numbers over the course of the next few weeks.

In terms of the software side of things, Super Mario 3D World is the only Wii U game in the top ten chart, while 3DS and PS3 titles dominate the rest of the charts.

Hardware Sales (followed by last week’s sales)

  • 3DS LL – 82,409 (63,709)
  • Wii U – 28,518 (21,002)
  • 3DS – 25,964 (20,797)
  • PlayStation Vita – 20,202 (21,044)
  • PlayStation 3 – 13,311 (12,436)
  • PlayStation Vita TV – 5,391 (7,868)
  • PSP – 4,232 (3,546)
  • Wii – 588 (457)
  • Xbox 360 – 309 (342)

Software Sales

  • [3DS] Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai 2 (Sega, 11/28/13) – 88,708 (New)
  • [3DS] Pokemon X and Y (Nintendo, 10/12/13) – 86,391 (3,089,129)

  • [PS3] Super Robot Wars OG Infinite Battle (Namco Bandai, 11/28/13) – 22,833 (New)

    At last, some good news…

  • Emufred

We’re not out the woods yet Wii-u, but we’re getting there! Go wii-u! :)

    • Ducked

      Jump on Edward’s back!

  • Nintenjoe82

I wonder if people now complain that you’re putting good news!

  • Gabe Hoffman

And people said Mario 3D World wouldn’t move systems

    • Ducked

Super Mario 3D World only sold 39,812 this week. So I’m not sure what’s moving sales for Wii U in Japan

      • Gabe Hoffman

Wii U went from 21k to 29k a pretty modest improvement and Wii U was the best selling console of the week

        • Ducked

I’m talking about sales for Super Mario 3D World, not the Wii U console…

          • Rinslowe

To fair to both your points the accurate verdict is not out yet on how many of the 29K units sold in Japan only, related to combined SM3DW sales also. Not for the full 7 days in any case. Lets wait and see…?

  • Emufred

Can’t wait to see how the gaming media will report this, they’ll probably ignore it.

    • Zuxs13

They probably will, its not really big news. They only sold 28k units. If it was 100k or something then it would be worth noting.

  • Rukiafan Rukiachan

    • Ducked

      This has become overused

      • Magnus Eriksson

Yup. This is Nintendo-Greed. I dont want them to print money. I want them to earn money.

        • Ducked

          Exactly

  • djvalbnc

sombodey else thinking this is the best soundtrack of LoZALBW?

  • Magnus Eriksson

I honestly believe that Wii U will take off in the weeks that come. There is good reasons to believe that Reggie will announce a new Zelda game on Wii U this Saturday. And Im pretty confident that will change the game. If you look at Reggies Instagram account he poses with a lot of Zelda artifacts, the Master Sword, clothing feature the Zelda logo etc. And we didnt get the Zelda A Link to the Past on Virtual Console yet, even though 3DS version just was released. I believe they will release it after this announcement of a new Zelda. If Im true, this IS the move that will change the game for the Wii U, turning failure into success. From a strategic point of view, this would be a very clever move. Undooming the Wii U on the 7th? I think so.

Edit: I see that many other sites are speculating in the same thing. Here is Zelda informer: http://www.zeldainformer.com/news/you-heard-it-here-first-zelda-u-will-be-shown-off-at-vgx-this-saturday

    • crocodileman94

It’s a possibility, but don’t get you hopes up. You never know when it comes to Nintendo.

      • Magnus Eriksson

If you look at my other posts I rarely do so. I have in general been one of the most critical voices towards Nintendo this generation. This time I believe its a very good reason to get hopes up. If Reggie is confident about what he have stated in the recent days, im sure he back it up with something like this. They are hyping us up with bits and pieces, and small sophisticated hints. A Zelda TBA would be the icing on the cake this year. This would make the Wii U to the obvious choice for so many more than before. Yes, I honestly belive this is whats going to happen. There is a change of tone towards Nintend now, and an announcement like this would skyrocket the stocks.

    • Nintedward

The thing I hate is that people are using words like DEAD , DOOMED to describe the Wiiu and its really over dramatic. These amateur, money grabbing websites write these articles for hits and the average, low IQ gamer just laps it up.

The Wiiu is not doomed, its still to early to say. It has been out for 1 year and it still has 5 years left. Its been under performing for sure, but it has been selling better in recent weeks and I’m pretty confident it will sit between 5 and 6 million units sold by the end of this year. And those figures certainly do not spell DOOOOOOOOOOMMMM!! but rather just SELLING LOWER THAN NINTENDO EXPECTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How can a platform be dead when it has Smash bros, Mario Kart, Donkey kong, X, Bayonetta 2, Yoshi yarn, SMT X FE and a new Zelda game coming to it?

if the Wiiu had like none of those games coming in the near future, I would be extremely concerned but it does…

      • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

I hope you’re not classifying Wii U Daily in that list of amateur money grabbing sites, since I’ve never used those words to describe the Wii U. :P

        • Nintedward

          Obviously not! XD

I love this site! I go on N4G.com which is an aggregate site, and you can see all the headlines from the amateur sites I was referring to…

          • ScrewAttack

I hate those “news” links that pop up on those sites.

        • Magnus Eriksson

Ashley, no one in their right mind thinks that. Said it before, you do a great job reporting on news.

          • Arthur Jarret

I’ve seen a lot of people not in their right minds on the internet, though… I hope their opinion won’t detract from the overall journalistic quality this site currently maintains.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Yup, many fish in the net

        • Nintenjoe82

No but in future, I would prefer it if you used headlines like “failed has-been and Sony stooge does not like Wii U” or “Microsoft use developers from EA to undermine rival console”

          • Ritchet

It’s funny because Yoshida himself owns two Wii U consoles and admits that Nintendo still makes great games.

          • Nintenjoe82

This week was ridiculous for getting obvious anti-Nintendo people to slate the Wii U.

Most of the quotes were about as relevant as Sonic the Hedgehog’s opinion of the SNES in 1993.

          • Leo

Sorry but nobody should be fooled by this passive-aggressive statement from Sony.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

So someone who has two Wii U consoles and admits Nintendo makes great games is being passive-aggressive? That’s interesting.

          • Leo

Its interesting how easily people are fooled by the head of a company. This is called business my dear, and you just sold yourself to it.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Sounds to me you read too much into what people say. Its not unheard of if the competition has a Wii U, Xbox One or PS4. Why should they limit themselves just to their own products?

I think you’re selling yourself short and fool yourself into that way of pondering. It’s an interesting way of looking at things, but I think you’re looking at it too deeply. To each their own. :P

        • Vinicius

Not you Ashley, but a certain John Kingsley almost does it everytime he writes an article.

          • NintenScience

            lol

        • Veries Seals

lol, don’t worry ashley, you guys are some of the best. Yeah we complain sometimes but we love this site. You guys do a great job. I am sure he meant no harm. There are a lot of the site out there that publish a lot of garbage though. So he is right about that. Some people write about the Wii U but does not have a Wii U or have only had a second hand experience with only a couple of the milder games and base their judgment from that. Which does not make for a good comprehensive review.

        • CEObrainz

Wii U Daily is on the right track, as long as the articles are not opinionated (something the journalist can simply add to in the comments section) then we’ll have no problem.

        • RecheD

I think that the Japanese already know something of what will be presented on December 7 in the VGX

          • Mario

            Triforce power! Nintendo style!

          • Akatosh

            Now you’re playing with power.

          • Luciano

            That’s Nintendo Power!
Where are all the haters now?! Are they waiting for their father Patcher say any shit again?
            Try again mother foca.

          • Josiah Parsons

That reminds me. Wasn’t there supposed to be an achievement system?

        • steve

you guys most definitely are guilty of pulling those tactics. but thats how you stay relevant so its understood, not appreciated. but understood.

        • Mike A

Ashley, you do great job for this site and I hope they pay you well because seems like you do most of the work.

        • Bridger Murray

Yes, we know that this website is great, thats why we’re here. Please stop unprofessionally commenting on your own articles and babysitting other commentators. We know your great, now stop seeking praise!!!

        • Rinslowe

You do a good job. We can’t all always agree with you but that’s besides the point. Only you “practically” are doing what you’re doing while we crash around in the comment sections, lol.
          Cheers eh!

        • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

new update for cod gosht Ashley.

      • Nintenjoe82

What annoys me is that the people printing the “doom” keep defending what they are doing by saying they are just reporting the “facts” or just making sure they keep up with the news.

Since when was it newsworthy to report the words of a failed has-been who is a long term rival of the company he is slating?

In the last few months the Wii U has been improving but we still get articles citing figures from almost 3 months ago to prove that Wii U is doomed.

      • ScrewAttack

Analysts seem to reckon 6 million will be sold by the end of the fiscal year. So by then the community will be, what, 10-11 million strong? Could be far worse.

        • Magnus Eriksson

The end of the fiscal year is March. And the 6M is covering the sales in total, not adding to the already sold. Nintendos own forecasts is about 10M. They are still holding them, so my guess is that they have a plan that will inject a renewed interest in the Wii U. I think its the Zelda.

          • ScrewAttack

Then that’s way low. Last time I check sales were around the 5 million mark….Three days!

          • Magnus Eriksson

Well, then we have to aim for Nintys own forecasts. If they are reaching that level and smashing all analysts at once its pure success. If Im right in my OP they could very well do that. Thats what they did with the 3DS.

          • NintenScience

            Nintendo‘s*

Unless…the word Ninty is a nickname

      • Magnus Eriksson

I didnt use doom, I used UNdooming. If Im right here Im pretty sure this would put an end to the “Doom-speech”. Over night everyone would change their mind about the Wii U, just like the 3DS. And I believe that sudden changes like that have become a marketing strategy from Nintendo. This is why we didnt see to many ads, and a weak effort to market the Wii U.

You know that the largest gaming show in Norway re-reviewed the Wii U yesterday? From being veru negative for a whole year they suddenly changed their tone describing Wii U as the obvious choice this year. This IS EXCACTLY what happened with the 3DS.

And you know me. I rarely hype up. But I honestly believe that the misfortunes of Nintendo is on the change this very moment.

        • Nintedward

Your comment was good, I wasn’t referring to you.

        • ScrewAttack

I really dislike the bipolarity of the gaming media. All they do is flip-flop, yet they still have the gall to act as if they’re experts on the matter. Analysts are no better of course.
I’m glad it’s put you in a better frame of mind over it all, anyway.

          • Mario

I know! Right!? The same thing happened with Sonic lost world!

        • Rinslowe

I’ll try not to stalk your comments, LOL – so to speak! But try not to be so damn inspiring right now!! I’m a sucker for positive news (but hardly naive to the bad stuff). And I habitually double down on positive Ninty news everytime. :P

I call it the Reggie effect. It’s contagious! Hahaha!
          :)

          • Magnus Eriksson

Hehe no problem. Thats what this place is meant for. :D

Im actually quite hyped up about this because I honestly believe it to be true. I kind of lost faith in Nintendo this generation, but this could really be it. A turn of events. I think VGX is the place to be for many reasons, and its a good signal for us who doesnt want the Wii U to be a first-party only family oriented device. This is the place where Nintendo could appeal to the famous “core gamers” (a quite new term with a unclear content), and by doing so they might attract the eyes of certain third parties again. But to do so they need something of a certain size and it must be new and fresh. Thats why I believe Zelda is a candidate. Also its at a special time. Its soon christmas, and here they can make Wii U relevant again.

Now they can exploit bad reports on XB1 and PS4 by showing a console that works, got many games and one nomine for award. If they top this with a Zelda they could re-launch the console before the financial year ends. In march they will sit down with board and big shareholders to look through the financial situation. If Wii U is peaking upwards it will generate optimism about the product. You are a businessman yourself if I remember correctly? Then you know of what importance such things are. :)

          • Rinslowe

I’m a small business owner yeah. But hardly an authority on corporations. However I have worked in two large international companies before. Still I’m just trying to communicate, that I don’t consider myself to be a “businessman” in the professional sense, lol. If you know what I mean?
Sure I can see the importance of that point on a few levels. They can survive without it for a time, with the ultimate goal of finding longevity and profitability for the product in a practical time frame, but investor confidence is at a low of late and the media is a shambles for the most part. Absolutely these are important points for Nintendo to address… Nigh on critical.
Not only that, but it would certainly put Reggie’s money where his mouth is and reinstate some top level confidence in his future also. All these things.
            :)

          • NintenScience

            The Reggie effect?

            roflmao

          • Rinslowe

            Yeah lol ;P
            You like?

          • NintenScience

            xd

      • Magnus Eriksson

The rise from doom to success is the hugest leap you can make. I think Nintendo understands the advantages of this. That is things that makes the media marketing the console. And think about it. Why should Nintendo use alot of energy on marketing campaigns to compensate for bad news in the media? Its more clever to let medias change their mind. I think things like thate creates hype. I know for sure it works with me, and Im not the one who gets hyped up to easily. Maybe Im wrong, but I think Nintendo is clever enough to turn things like this to their advantage. Theyve done it before, and they are doing it now.

        • D.M.T

Wow Magnus, you went from being extremely negative and trolling everyone to being positive about Wii U’s future. This change of heart was unexpected but very welcome. I hope you learned that you should never ever underestimate Nintendo.

          • Mario

Yeah… I noticed that. He changed.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Nope. Im the same as always.

          • Mario

Maybe. But for some reason, i feel that your tone has changed a bit. A little more respectful maybe?

          • Magnus Eriksson

Nope, I just happen to think something that people here like. I am the same as always. The next time I disagree, make a joke or have a different view Im pretty sure most of you will come back with the same hate. Calling me names. Tell me I deserve to die. Saying Im a bat father. That im an idiot, stupid, retarded shit that no one likes etc. You will never see me say things like that to another human. So the disrespect is on your table, not mine.

          • Rinslowe

Wow, Magnus… People here have really said all those things?
            That’s how to say….

            CRAY – CRAY!
            LOCO!
            非常笨蛋!

To say the least… Shame for them!

          • Magnus Eriksson

Well, its no problem really. To be honest I find it a bit comic that people degrade themselves to say things like that out of anger. Especially when its over quite weak reasons, such as criticism towards (or jokes about) a company or a product. Its interesting though that people take side, and by taking side they seem to think they can treat the “other” in worst thinkable ways. The us-them or friend-enemy dichotomy makes it too easy to justify things you never would accept otherwise. Dont you think?

          • Rinslowe

I’m no poster boy to good behaviour. But very rarely after picking a side would I conduct in such a vulgar and classless fashion. Again, I’ve been historically extremely critical of certain individuals at various points in time on this site, yourself included at one point – LOL. But there are lines that most well adjusted individuals would not cross. When debasing someone so completely is done on any level – Well we’ve failed ourselves in the simplest form as people…

          • NintenScience

            lol

          • Mario

Oh no. I would neve speak to someone like that. Not even to those I hate!

          • Magnus Eriksson

But you admit that you hate people. Thats a strong word. I dont hate anyone. There might be people I dislike because of different actions (to be more precise its the actions I dislike). But I would never say that I hate them, if something I feel sorry for them.

          • Mario

But I don’t hate you. I can assure you that.

          • Magnus Eriksson

            Good to hear :)

          • NintenScience

            lmao

          • Magnus Eriksson

Now now. Calm down a bit…

      • Mithiragi

        My Nintendo News? lol

      • Magnus Eriksson

You shouldnt hate so much Eddie. All you need is love. And it goes for others too. :)

      • Forbsz

I wouldn’t say doomed but it is certainly not on good terms all fan boys around keep defending the console but they come up with the most ridiculous arguments the fan boys get me most annoyed I love nintendo as much as everyone else but there are idiots out there who think it is all sunshine and rainbows for nintendo when it clearly isn’t you compare wii u to xbox one and ps4 and the fan boys bring up the 3ds they are on different levels handheld and console… I highly doubt it will sit between even 5 million or 6 million by the end of year it would be a miracle if it did…

    • Jack5221

I personally do not think it will be Zelda. Although that is a good prediction, I have a feeling it will be something related to Metroid.

      • Josiah Parsons

Either one would get fans really pumped. I’m just afraid it’s gonna be Yarn Yoshi.

        • ScrewAttack

I’m not sure what to expect of the VGX, but I do remember them saying back in the Summer that they had stuff to show for Zelda U- they just didn’t plan to yet because it’d overshadow WWHD. Some peeps I talk to on another board say that he also said we’d see something by year’s end…maybe now?

With the excellent titles already out and the stuff already announced for next year, a Zelda trailer really would blow this up.

          • Magnus Eriksson

            Yes! This!

          • Josiah Parsons

Very true. I’m as psyched as anybody/everybody for new zelda, but I’m still kinda scared.

          • Guahiatt

But didn’t Aonuma already say that there will be more news about Zelda on E3 next year but not before? Also, Nintendo usually announces their titles “close” to release date, and I don’t think we will see the new Zelda until early 2015.

Anyway, you and Magnus made a very good point and I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t expect any Zelda news or trailers.

It would be so sweet though…

          • ScrewAttack

Can only hope mate. I just hope it’s not Tropical Freeze…surely it couldn’t be, not if it’s a premiere.

          • Ducked

Nintendo isn’t stupid, well they can be at times. But their going to reveal new footage of Smash Bros, or new Zelda.

          • Rinslowe

            Supernova….

        • Jack5221

In my opinion, they need to show something that hardcore gamers would like. Now that I really think about it, I have a feeling it will be Smash Bros. Think about it. EVERYONE loves Smash Bros, both casual & hardcore gamers a like. If they reveal a few new characters and a release date, then Wii U sales will undoubtedly go up.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Im not sure “evertone” loves Smash. The younger and the older (25+) generation do that. But gamer-kids from 13 to 24 might not do that. And those are the ones spending most money on games. Zelda on the other hand, could very well appeal if done rightly. And if Eiji Anouma got hes hands free, then it could very well be a masterpiece. After all he is the guy that made Majoras Mask in 18 months, and the dungeon master of many Zeldas.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Just think about it. What would happen if Im right? Nintendo stocks would skyrocket. There would be a total change of tone in the media. Everyone would re-review the Wii U, but now with a big library and MANY great games to come.

        • Jack5221

Or… Could be it about Smash Bros? I know lots of hardcore gamers that love that game, and since this event on Saturday is hosted by Spike tv then that’ll be good for the Wii U. We already know its an upcoming Wii U game. If they were to reveal more characters and maybe even a release date, then Nintendo stock would skyrocket as well.

    • Adam Porter

it would be a great way to get people onboard, like if i saw an amazing zelda game trailer a few weeks before christmas, i know which console i’d want the most.

      • Magnus Eriksson

        This^

    • Sydney Ultrasyd

I don’t believe they will announce Zelda on Wii U this saturday, but that would be … AWESOME !

    • Krzysztof

… or Metroid or new IP

      • Magnus Eriksson

I dont think so. My bet is on Zelda. Metroid is not too plausible yet. Although it would definitley hype ME up. But from a market point of view I think Zelda is the ultimate surprise. Maybe they will do something like they did in the first TP trailer.

        • Ducked

I think you could be right with new Zelda. But some new footage of Smash Bros is likely too. Or even new footage of Bayonetta 2

        • Jon

I am thinking they’d do Zelda at E3, E3 is the biggest gaming expo there is and they could easily use it to steal the spot light.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Read the article from Zelda Informer ;)

          http://wiiudaily.com/2013/12/wii-u-japan-sales-up#comment-1150518635

        • Rinslowe

Miyamoto only just commented a few short months ago on Metroid. And that IF or more accurately WHEN the project is given the green light – Retro Studios would get the first pick for developing it. So, it seems not likely that either Nintendo or Retro have had time to make those decisions let alone time enough to put something together. So I’m with you on that one. However, DK TF has been strategically pushed backed to FEB or MAR 14′ – many believing in order to allow SM3DW more time in the spotlight, which would make sense. But what if Rerto was also using the last couple of months to smash together a POC for a title of some description? There was also a lot of chatter a while back claiming them to be working on a brand new engine for Wii U… Although tbh, that’s a stretch and borderline conspiracy theories, I admit. Lol.

      • Ducked

        It’s of a game already announced…

    • Yousif Alromaithi

Now you believe me good going Mag.

    • Veries Seals

I think you are right Magnus. I think some New Zelda info is about to hit. It was already said that they were planning to do it earlier this year but held off. I just want to see it. I am so excited.

    • CEObrainz

Agh, if it was a trailer for Zelda Wii U I would be so happy, but in all honesty I’d rather have Nintendo surprise us with games we didn’t know were coming, such as F-Zero or a series we expected later on such as Fire Emblem.

      • Magnus Eriksson

I almost hope that they wont announce F-Zero unless they have given Shin’en a green light on developing it out from Fast League Neo. Otherwise it would be kind of disrespectful towards them who have been supporting Nintendo all the way.

    • PS4/WiiU

I don`t think they will talk about zelda since they said they would be talking about it at e3 2014. I think it`ll be Super smash since it is a highly anticipated game and many people would buy a wii U just for that game

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I honestly don’t think it’s going to be Zelda at VGX. They said “A new look at an upcomming Wii U game”. Dont get yourself over excited. My guess (and fear) is that it’ll be DKC:TF. Bayonetta would be a better guess, but we’ll wait and see. However, we can’t really have a “new look” at Zelda U since we don’t have an “old look” to compare it to.

I do believe the Wii U will turn around, but I dont think this VGX appearance will do it. I’d love to be proved wrong

      • Magnus Eriksson

Just that they ar planning an event on VGX makes me think that it MUST be a Zelda. Any other title would be meaningless.

Oh, btw. Check out this guys Twitter. It sounds a bit more like something new, than just a new look:

        https://mobile.twitter.com/geoffkeighley/statuses/408050833238933504

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Need I remind you of “One more look at NintendoLand!!!” From E3 2011? :P

World premiere of the new DCK:TF Trailer!

As much as Zelda makes sense, I dont know that Nintendo will do the thing that makes sense in this case.

Like I said, I’d LOVE to be proved wrong

          • Magnus Eriksson

I hope you are wrong too. :D

But as I said other places. I dont believe it will be released anytime soon, but I think this is the time and place to roll out the heavy artillery. That would only hype us more up for E3. It also makes sense. Listen to this:

Nintendo have been clear that they will not make a Zelda as the tech demo 2011 from E3. Remember what happened at the first Zelda tech demo for GCN? Wind Waker was released, and was harshly attacked at first for the style. It needed to grew onto people. I do think Nintendo want to avoid that. Likely they will warm up with a small teaser around now, and holding a large conferance about Zelda at E3. They will give us something we want to see more from now, and that way we will build up expectations from E3.

AND more important is, that IF they announce, or show a trailer from a new Zelda, then I can almost guarantee that every magazine that wrote about Wii U the last year will take second look. This time it actually got games, many good games. And many more will come and a new Zelda is actually visible in the horizon. That will have a very good effect on Wii U. It will practically be a re-launch. From business-strategic point of view its very likely. Also it can give Nintendo some space in the board and with shareholders.

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Yeah, you are correct. It would be monumental if they showed a Zelda trailer. EVERYONE would be talking about it, good or bad.

But Reggie said a “new look at an upcomming game”. We never had an “old look” to compare it to. That’s why my non hype is coming from :/

But yeah, it’d be the best decision. I just dont think it’s the one they’re making

          • Rinslowe

I’m with you on this one on all points mentioned. But I would very much like to be positively surprised and Zelda ticks all the right boxes in that department!

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I’d love to be surprised :D

          • Magnus Eriksson

Of course I could be wrong. Im not an almighty seer, just a quite ordinary person who believes its a pretty big chance. But we will see in Saturday :)

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I could be very wrong too. I hope I’m wrong XD I hope you’re right. Guess we’ll see!

    • Rinslowe

Holy mother of Magnus, Magnus! That genuinely hit me in the feels brother! Oh the possibilities!! Lets hope you are right!
And as @nintedward said, Wii U isn’t doomed in any way shape or form! Not by a long shot. I’ve been a stoic believer of Nintendo’s Wii U ability since Pikmin 3 started showing promise, then WWHD and SM3DW after that.
Again, if your hunch is true, YAHTZEE! I’ll reach through this screen and bear hug ya! Ha….

      • Magnus Eriksson

Check out this guys tweets then: https://mobile.twitter.com/geoffkeighley/statuses/408050833238933504

edit: BTW, personally if viewed from a purely egoistic angle, I would prefer a new Metroid. But there is a difference between wanting and thinking. I think Zelda is the most obvious of all great surprises they can give this day. Also it have been worked with for some time now. Twice they almost showed it too. Three is the magical number ;)

    • Mithiragi

Magnus, what about this pic? It has the pokemon 3ds xl on a classified envelope. Click the link. Reggie says he can’t wait to share what’s inside. Could there be a big pokemon game coming out for the Wii U?

      http://instagram.com/p/he5AWYsY-T/

      • Jon

I hope so, it would be nice to get an adventure like the handhelds on the console with an actual 3D world.

        • Mithiragi

It will probably be a spin off, like Pokemon Colosseum or XD: Gale of Darkness. Nintendo usually keeps the main series on the handhelds.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Dont know? Maybe they will eventually? But my guess is that they’ll keep it for the handhelds. Kind of make sense.

    • gamerofallplatforms

As much as I would loooove to see a Zelda U announcement, I will not be keeping my fingers crossed or hold my breath, I will not be speculating at what might be presented, because when you do that and don’t see what you were expecting you’ll end up being disappointing and needlessly pissed at Nintendo for you own assumptions. I’ll just wait and see :) and if there is good stuff to be presented then AWESOME, if not then oh well there is always Nintendo Direct.

    • Bridger Murray

Its unlikely they will announce another zelda game because we already have one on the horizon and wind waker has only been out for about a month.
I’m hoping for a new M,etroid game this saturday! :D

      • Magnus Eriksson

They will not announce another Zelda. They will announce THE Zelda. Im pretty sure this is what they will do.

        • Rinslowe

I commented on another site to this question recently that I think they’ll wait out a Zelda U reveal until E3 ’14 in order to give WWHD more exposure this holiday…. But, IF you are right and that’s an IF from me for the moment, then that is great news indeed. I think it’s possible that a new Zelda reveal this soon could even help WWHD continue in popularity, but it would definitely be a potential ace on the hole in itself. Personally I think it’ll be more of something we’ve already seen on the radar from 2014’s confirmed lineup or Miyamoto’s new IP. Could even be FRN from Shin’en Multimedia…
Again though, if your hunch turns out to be corrrect, this’ll be one of the few times where I’m genuinely happy to be wrong! Fingers crossed.

          • Magnus Eriksson

If the rumours about making catalogues with remakes of old N64 and GCN games are true I hardly think that its a problem that Wind Waker is already out there. But if they will show something from Zelda Im pretty sure it will be a preview, a very short trailer, or some pictures. Not a release or a release date. The game wont probably be here until 2015 anyways.

    • https://soundcloud.com/rauschenmaschine Kristian Kouvo

—Of what is this guy suddenly so happy about?—

Magnus, you have been bashing and dooming Wii U since it was born – and now all of a sudden you praise the thing!? A bit bipolar mindset have you? I know another thing, which does the same… it’s called a “weather vane”.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Lets talk more about my favourite topic – me. Im very flattered that so many on this page is interested in me, and throws around hypothesises about my mystical being. I would love to take my time, and explain a couple of things, however Im afraid that it would take too long time, because even if Im able to put fourth an explanation Im sorry to say that I believe you and many others have a very little ability to understand, therefore making such an effort wasted. Im sorry.

    3 Nintendo Systems on top;)

  • Mario

    woohoo!! I’m on fire!

  • Felix

“And people said Mario 3D World wouldn’t move systems”

Come on guys. you all blind fanboys? nintendo sold almost the same consoles than the last month, sure, now wii u is second, but that doesnt mean that nintendo sold more, only means that the other consoles sold less. probably, japs are saving for ps4 instead of buying more ps3s.

but sure, mario 3d world moved systems, like 7000 more wii u. Wow. Ps4 sell that in half hour.

    downvote me yayaya!

    • Nintenjoe82

I think it’s obviously good news given the fact that sales were down to 3000 before Wii U Party and SM3DW.

In the last 3 weeks, Nintendo sold more systems in Japan than they did in all of 2013 in Europe. We haven’t heard anything about sales in Europe or US for a while and even though it wont be 2 million in 2 weeks like the PS4, the number of sold out online stores must be a decent indicator. People seem to forget that Wii U sold just as well in its launch as the two newer consoles are selling at the moment.

      • boynhisblobs

Good point. Let’s see how the PS4 hype gets churned in January. They claim they won’t have a software drought like nintendo, let’s see.

        • Jon Turner

The hype for PS4 is already cooling in America; after selling a million here, the sales crashed to 91k. It rose a little to 145k, but WiiU still outsold it by 40k. This is the second time WiiU has done so.

    • verymetal

Nintendo are known for coming back and even having people that don’t
understand them post comments on Nintendo oriented web
sites just like yourself. Also, I was one of the first people to criticize Nintendo for announcing Super Mario 3D World. I just didn’t get it. I thought it was a polished 3DS game, but I was wrong. I was very wrong! I have played this game and it is awesome and truly does have that innovative game play people expect from Nintendo. Just check the reviews for it…The game should have been a launch title and I guarantee they would be in a different position then they are now.

      • Felix

probably, but nintendo advertising departament sucks.

    • Ducked

I’m giving you a upvote just because I feel bad for you :)

    • Jon

you know…. you can see the previous weeks numbers in the brackets right?

    • Petri

NSMBU WII U bundle has sold a lot of systems here, also SM3DW has sold like hotcakes here.

  • Ryan Eslambolipour

    Woop woop

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

Hatsune miku at number 1 at software, Gotta love japan :)

  • Laud

This is a little offtopic but uh, how the hell is lightning returns selling so well? The last 3 with the exception of the MMO are just crap. There’s more padding in that game than in the bra of a 13 year old. >_>

Edit: Since some of you guys know the game isn’t out, I saw a walkthrough in Japanese and yes, I speak Japanese. Enough to understand it at least, lotta tongue twisters in there.

    • Guahiatt

Agreed, that was offtopic. Have a good day!

    • CivilRobo

That’s your opinion. Some people actually like the FFXIII games.

      • Denvy

You’re right, some, not many :P

  • D-Man

I love the 3DS. But It keeps hogging the top spot…damn it 3DS give your big brother a chance at the top!

    • Laud

Lol that’s kind of true except I don’t think Nintendo cares much as long as EVERYONE owns one of their systems. Naturally, they’re going to advertise on the 3DS as they have been doing (kinda) here in the U.S.

    • verymetal

I know what you are saying, but if it weren’t for the 3DS I truly think Nintendo would be in serious trouble financially. I want the Wii U to be a huge success, and have said things in the past that some people have a hard time accepting. Nintendo needs to wake up and start supporting the Wii U as if they didn’t have the 3DS at all!

      • Relick

Nintendo has money, they wouldn’t be struggling financially without the 3DS.

        • Ducked

Nintendo wouldn’t be doing as good with the 3DS, you’d see twice as much gloom and doom articles. But that all ends after Mario Kart 8

  • Zuxs13
  • Leo

WiiU will simply benefit from the lack of good games for the competition until mid 2014. It seems that Nintendo wisely avoided a direct confront and is gaining momentum during the times where the competition will be very low-key.

    • Veries Seals

Hmmm, I would not say that Nintendo is avoiding competition at all. Have you seen the side by side comparison of games with the Wii U and PS4? The Wii U is not backing down at all and is competing with them quiet well in the graphics department. It is not ask weak as people thought at all. if you have not see it in action, check it out for yourself.

      • Mozellergodt

The Wii U is a lot weaker than PS4 and Xbone there is no question about it. You can’t really compare it like this since Assassins Creed was made with multiple systems in mind and is not really optimized to show the potential of the PS4 when it comes to graphical power. I mean , you almost can’t tell the difference from the Xbox 360 footage from the rest, and the console came out in 2005.

        • NkoSekirei

well heres a thing we still havent seen any game tap the wii u full power due to some lazy devs but monolith is gonna prove that with X showing powerful the wii u really is

        • Veries Seals

Actually you can. If a graphics card is much more superior you would be able to tell a vast difference in performance and visuals. Just because you have an octa-core processor and more ram does not make you more powerful. It only means you have more resources to work with. Yes the PS4 has more resources true enough but that is about it. Also just because a machine came out 8 years ago, that does not make it not powerful today, that just means they have found more and better ways to remove bottle necks to improve performance. That does not mean that the older consoles are weak. Believe it or not as old as a pentium 3 and 4 are they are still very powerful processors. You can still use those processors to run applications, they would just not be good for multi-tasking. So your theory about the PS4 and Xbox One being much more powerful is not really true, they are a lot more optimized and have a lot more resources. As much as you would like to think that the Xbox one or the PS4 is powerful they are really not. They are really bottom line, entry level pc’s that are dedicated to games and multimedia. Since they don’t really have to multi-task as much as a full fledge PC, their performance seems greater than it really is. Well with the Xbox one being a bit of an exception because it is more like a PC than the PS4 to be honest. This performance boost that you see with Xbox One and PS4 is only because its resources are freed up from having to do everyday PC task. So in a since they are really not as half is powerful as you think in real world performance and numbers. If the PS4 or Xbox one were so powerful, technically with out optimization and specialized code they should be smashing the Wii U graphically out of the box, but they are not! Why, because they are more powerful on paper than in real world performance. The Wii U is not as weak as you think it is and the competition is not as strong as you give them credit for.

  • Nothing5555

Wow nice to see Assassin’s Creed on the Japanese charts.

  • Veries Seals

    It’s just got real y’all

ikr. And many more to be honest.

        • Ducked

PS4’s launch software was horrible, Shadowfall and Knack were two big disappointments.

Clearly there is no reason to buy a PS4 or Xbox One right now until some software comes out next year.

          • Veries Seals

On a related argument, according to vgzcharts Super Mario 3D World sold 380 000 copies beetween the 22th (Realse date) and the 23th (End of the last reported week).

    Here the link:

    http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly/41602/Global/

    • Jon

did you notice how the Wii U sold more than the PS4 according to that data as well?

Though, not sure how accurate that is as we know the PS4 is over 2 mil now and they have it at 1.2

      • Yen

I think that’s because they’re usually a week or 2 late to compile more accurate data. Don’t take my word for it though I don’t know how they even get their data.

      • Anthony K Aurelia

First that data is not for sold units…it is for shipped…also it is entirely possible for the week after the PS4s release due to supply issues and the fact it isn’t out in Japan until after Christmas.

Wow “Truthteller” how maniest( is that even a word) account is this? 230598th? Your account got banned again, yet you keep coming back with new names, you are even worse then weeds (the bad weeds, not the good weeds which makes you stoned)
In your first comment you used the word Propaganda, and with that your secret alias already got spoiled. I do agree that Wii U is still underperforming, but flopped is a bit to far, maybe next year summer it is, but now it’s not yet.

So please stop your anti-Nintendo propaganda, although you got banned “again” you’ll be back “again” in a week or so.

‘Donaald Truth’ needs to save up and hunt down a PS4, already! If he had more than a clunky old Xbox, or a life worth enjoying he’d be far too busy to troll Wii U Daily, lol.

    • Ducked

You do realize “when” people like you, give him this attention, then that only encourages him to keep doing it. The best way to kill a troll, is by completely ignoring it.

      • Guest
      • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

On normal trolls that does work yes, but on people like him, ignoring won’t stop him from coming back all the time, every now and then he has a valid point. But most of the time his troll comments make me laugh after a busy and long day at work.

        • Ducked

But if no one ever pay attention to him, then why would it matter or not to him? He only comes back because he still gets hate.

    • DarkLegacy

Truthteller won’t return again. He’s more than likely IP banned for making his hate on Wii U by telling his “truth”. And that was not truth, he came on to this site to talk shit about the Wii U. And now that he’s banned we won’t have to look at his comments again

From the looks of it PS4 & xbone is not released in Japan yet? It makes sense it ends up as 2nd when you compare it with ~8 year old systems.

    • ETeach

Except the WiiU was selling really REALLY badly last year when it’s only competition was the 8 year old systems. It’s good to see WiiU’s at least outselling last gen systems for a change.

  • Michael Rowlands

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmVSEmnYQMg……………he is saying the wii u is a failure what do you people think…

    • Yen

Most of the things he says are pretty dumb honestly. He used outdated data, claimed things that are only based on his opinion, and it sounds like he doesn’t really know enough about the Wii U to make that claim.

      • Michael Rowlands

the games will look better on ps4 and xbox1 put i think the games coming to wii u will have better game play

        • Yen

Well that’s one thing I had a problem with him saying. He said that you can get Watch Dog for Wii U if you want a “shitty looking” version. So far graphically Wii U isn’t doing bad at all. You can say it won’t look as detailed, but it is certainly not shitty. So far Wii U has the least problems with lag and having to graphics issues of the three systems, and it’s streaming to TWO screens. I think that’s a good accomplishment.

What does 2014 have in-store? Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros and X (Monolith Software) just to name a few – But LBH.. Obviously not looking good.. What an idiot.

    • Decker Shado

The comments on that video are painful to read.

People asserting that ALL that Wii U will ever have to offer them is Smash Bros, so that’s a total failure… nevermind the crapton of other games out for it (such as Assassin’s Creed 4) or upcoming titles (Mighty No. 9) Nope, nope nope… Nothing but smash bros, such a pity.

However, this here PS4 with it’s 2 whole exclusive titles, one “meh” and one “oh god no” – this is a man’s console!

Honestly, I myself see the Wii U number wise selling less overall than the PS4 and XBO, getting less 3rd party support, and all that… but the difference is I don’t see the Wii U as a failure because of that. It’s a great system, which offers a unique gameplay experience and already has some of the best gaming experiences to be had in recent history. PS4 and XBO will do well enough, will get games, some will be real gems. But Nintendo is fine. More than fine, they’re doing good. And even if they sell less systems overall… this is now the 2nd Christmas in a row they have Japan to themselves. There’s a good chance Nintendo will own the East, this gen.

News sites will be like “Wii U fails to achieve the same success as the 3DS in Japan, Nintendo should stop Wii U production to avoid bankruptcy”

Super Mario 3D World’s sales only dropped by a little over 50%, whereas Lightning Returns sales dropped by roughly 70%. That’s a good sign that SM3DW will continue to stay in the top 10.

    • Ritchet

To be fair Lightning Returns is a terrible game. I know the ending and it’s the worst thing ever. I’m glad 3D World is the first of many great games for Wii U.

      • Nathan Verbois

To be fair, I haven’t played Lightning Returns, or SM3DW, so I can’t comment on either. ;-p

The main takeaway for me, is that Lightning Returns sold nearly 3 times as many copies as Mario, but its current sales are less than 25% of its original sales (I was wrong with my earlier percentage), whereas Mario’s are only 40% of its first week. If they were to both continue to degrade at the same rate, Lightning Returns will fall off the chart first by a couple of weeks. More likely, Mario will hit a plateau for awhile (being a stellar Mario game) and resist sale degradation for a time, hopefully keeping it in the top 10.

Thought the PS4 and X1 were included in the stats…got a little excited for a sec

    • ETeach

PS4 and X1 aren’t available over there. At least not yet. I think PS4’s releasing there in February.

  • InterTreble

Wii U is going to have a glorious Christmas: last week 21K, this week 28K. This is called a “very good trend”. I have always said that criticizing about Wii U without the big titles out is just talking no sense: and now the facts are telling I was right. Software sell hardware. It has always been so. I’m sorry for haters and for people who still refuse to understand this basic principle, and make only console/member wars and confusion.

  • capitalism1023

Very good news, looks like the Japanese are finally starting to warm up to the system. Also, it’s good to see the top three slots all go to Nintendo hardware.

  • thedeciderU
