GameSpot posts a video on why you should buy a Wii U in 2014

The Wii U has been criticized by gaming publications from around the world — yes, even from us here at Wii U daily. Nintendo has made mistakes with their new console, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go out and buy a Wii U.

Certainly not according to a new GameStop video, where they run down several reasons why you should buy a Wii U (after spending the first minute of the video talking about all the bad things about the console).

Some of the points the GameStop video makes appear to be coming from Captain Obvious. Such as “The Wii U is the only console that offers first party Nintendo games”. It also mentions how “Wii U’s main gambit is the Wii U GamePad”. No shit, Sherlock.

Honestly, this video just seems like a cheap ploy from GameSpot to get some Nintendo fans over to their side, as they’ve been heavily focusing on Xbox/PlayStation over the past few years. The video talks about the most obvious things we’ve all known for a while — it’s as if they’re talking down to us.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t buy a Wii U. You certainly should, if only for Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World. Oh, and the upcoming Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros.

  • Daniel Carvalho

Despite pointing out all the defects and bad points in comparison to its rivals, Gamespot managed to make the best Wii U add so far. Come one, Nintendo, start working on advertisement already!

  • Iwata

This was very good! We will try to make commercials like this.

    • Luciano

Now you’re playing with super power

      • Squid

        Nintendo power,

  • Kyle

    - Gamepad is the best thing on gaming ever
    – Super Smash bros
    – Mario
    – Zelda!
    – Kart
    – X

Reasons enough for me already, but maybe:
    – kirby
    – a pokemon “stadium” (i still have hope)
    – Metroid
    – Star fox
    – more awesome games that only nintendo makes

    • Josiah Parsons

      F-Zero

    • Kyle

Name stealer! The Gamepad is the best controller out of the three but it isn’t the most comfotable.

      • Kyle

you really think so?? Wow I think it is perfectly confortable

        • ScrewAttack

Same for me. Thing might as well be made of curved foam for how light it is. Never got the complaints about it being “too heavy”, but on comfort maybe I’ve just got big hands.

        • Magnus Eriksson

I think it works good too, and is comfortable enough. But not for fighting games.

        • Kyle

It’s a comfortable, surprisingly lightweight, controller. It’s not as comfortable as the Dualshock, but overall the gamepad is the best. Xbone controller is just meh.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Lol, so you dont like the WiiUPro then? It feels very similar to XBox

          • Kyle

I have wii pro, not very good, not sure about Wii U Pro.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, its better than Wii Pro Classic. I agree that it isnt that good. Feels way to plastic. But thats something I feel with the WiiUPad too. The D-pad is way too hard. And the buttons have a hard plastic feel.

    • The Clockwork Being

I see you forgot Fire Emblem X Shin Megami Tensei, probably one of my most anticipated RPG!

    • Deadpool U

I find that a pokemon fighting game is very likely.

      • Squid

Oh yeah, hopefully e3… That Pokemon center reminds me of that fan made one.

      • Joseph Parsons

love to see that on wii u

    • Magnus Eriksson

      - Gamepad could be good, now its a gimmick
      – Super Smash Bros is not out yet
      – Mario is very tired now, he need a long rest
      – Zelda is a very long way from here. Zelda WW HD is a remake that shouldnt be here now.
      – Kart is not here yet… But oh my God soon it is, and it looks amazing.
      – X… why is there only silence about this game? Is it still coming?

You just gave alot of reasons to wait, and NOT buying it today. Ill give you some reasons why you should buy it today.

      – Pikmin 3 is a gem with gorgeus graphics and fun gameplay. Its also kind of unique.
      – W101 is another unique title, and also a gem.
      – Suber Mario 3D World is extremely fun. I think its one of the more fun Mario games since M64
      – ZombiU, is a very underrated zombie apocalyptic horror game. Its genuinly scary, difficult and got a much darker and uncomfortable tone to it than RE games.
      – Nintendo Land is the only game sofar that shows how the pad can be used, sadly few games are doing this today. But you got some really fun games there. DK Kart, Metroid Blast, Luigis Mansion are all very good games.
      – It got some really bad ports, but it got some good too. If you dont own them on another system you could aswell buy them on Wii U. Deus Ex, Batman and Mass Effect 3 is quite good. Darksiders 2 and Tekken not too good. Need for Speed was very good.
      – MiiVerse is actually quite ok. Especially if you like to debate games.
      – It got an ok drawing APP that works well with the pad. It is very cheap too. 3 bucks or something like that.
      – Zelda WW HD is amazing, but it shouldnt have come now. But now its here, and if you have not played it you should. One of the best Zelda games made.
      – Virtual Console is still crap, but it got some really good classics to choose from. If you are european you can get Super Mario 3 and Zelda aLttP too. It only got 60 games something, but very many of those are great games.
      – Its kind of nice surfing facebook on your TV with the pad.
      – Watching YouTube videos on the TV.
      – Reading PDF’s on your TV (very good if you are a student).

There, some reasons for buying it TODAY.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        What about tomorrow?

        • Magnus Eriksson

Sadly this list doesnt change to often Daniel. There will not be a new reason until Mario Kart, and after that its very uncertain when next will come. So if those things I listed are reason enough, then you should buy it. If not… Then there might never be enough reason.

          • Shota

mariokart 8 comes this spring yet there not much info about it. maybe it’s just me but think nintendo should give us more mario kart 8 info these coming months.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Oh no? Look into GameXplains video on Mario Kart 8 then ;) Its very good.

          • Shota

            thanks magnus

          • Justagamer

Ive tried the demo @best buy and it is awesome

      • Ducked

Youtube is what made me buy a Wii U

        • Magnus Eriksson

Lol, I see you read it through. I dont think the six downvoters did :D

          • Ducked

Nah, they went straight to to comment button

      • YogiGRB

        You forgot netflix Magnus

      • Jack5221

Another game that they have been silent about other than X is Yarn Yoshi. Its been about a year and we haven’t heard anything about it.

        • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, thats strange. But also abit good I think. N. should release some of their other stuff now. :)

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I’m just hoping they’ll be like “Oh yeah, here’s yarn yoshi. It’s releasing tomorrow”

      • Arthur Jarret

What’s wrong with the Tekken port? Great game AND mushroom mode… not to mention a panda bear wearing peach’s dress. Sonic racing is a great game on wii U too. Ninja gaiden is amazing as well – even though that upgrade has been ported back to the other systems.

For future games, there is also hyrule warriors and Fire emblem X Shin Megami Tensei – which I’m almost looking forward to more than ‘X’ – despite a lack of information outside the reveal teaser

        • Magnus Eriksson

Mushroom mode is a nice touch yes. But the online is horrible as no one plays it. My version kind of lags, and it show why the pad isnt necessarly a good design for all type of games. Also button mapping doesnt work too well with the classic controllers as you only can utilize the D pad.

However I just gave some examples on ports. Besides those you mention there is Assassins Creed wich I found ok. FIFA which I didnt play, Splinter Cell etc.

          • Arthur Jarret

I didn’t really have lag on my sessions… and no-one playing it isn’t really caused by the game being a bad port… Injustice is solid too, same issue for online although more tend to play that.

Monster hunter is my most played game though (and I didn’t even include the wii version in that list I made on miiverse). Together with W101 still my favorite wii U game and the only game these last 2 gens except mariokart that got me into it’s online mode. I really hope Capcom will localize 4.

Edit: I personally had no control issues… but that’s due to using a home-made fight stick (for 2 players made out of an old desk… the drawer holds all the parts and I can choose input using a printer switch). It supports Wii (classic controller), Gamecube, PS3/PC and I’m working to add N64 – as well as finding a drawing table underside so I can adjust angle & height.

          • Magnus Eriksson

True, but mine still have som lag issues. But I checked some reviews now, no one else did complain over that. Maybe its my disc or something?

          • Arthur Jarret

I don’t know… do you even have lag offline? If so, that would be very weird…

          • Magnus Eriksson

            Yup, it lags

          • Arthur Jarret

            That is very weird…

      • Arthur Jarret

Also, I’m sure I mentioned this on miiverse, but: try http://www.Couchtuner.eu – my main reason for keeping my wii U hooked up to my beamer. With it you can stream most popular shows – VK and iShared sources work on wii U perfectly.

Don’t click any ‘download now’ links, though – those are adverts (just find show, episode, tiny ‘watch it now link’, choose source from the tab and press ‘play in HD’ on VK – or the tiny X, close pop-up and press play on iShared)

      • Stephen

If Mario is very tired, then please tell me, what exactly is CoD, Battlefield, Halo? I happen to find the new 3D World to be absolutely fantastic, especially compared to the number of issues I’ve had with my xbox one.

        • Magnus Eriksson

I dont give a shit about CoD, Battlefield or Halo :)

          • Stephen

I don’t care what you give a shit about. I’m just asking a question. I see all the time people say Nintendo lives on Mario, Zelda etc. Yet, those same people never question how come a new CoD or Battlefield comes out every two years. Yes, the two combined move an insane amount of units… However, the games are always the same… prestige in CoD, KD ratio’s and kit unlocking…

          • Magnus Eriksson

Then dont ask me that question

      • nexxus6

I agree with majority of what you mentioned above. More people need to experience ZombiU, it is an amazing game (and lets not forget it was a launch title). I love my WiiU and have zero regrets about purchasing it. As of right now (not including downloaded indie games or VC games), my library is at about 23 titles.

    • ETeach

I must’ve spent about 90% of my WiiU playtime on the Gamepad. It’s really changed console gaming for me.

      • Michael Hancock

Me too, man. I am a near-sided father of 2 toddlers. I couldn’t go back to gaming solely on my TV if I wanted to. My TV is basically for Sponge Bob, Dora, Oso, Jo-Jo’s Circus, and Harry the Bunny. It also serves as a target to spit juice on. Thanks, Nintendo.

        • Michael Hancock

The gamepad should have been able to display 1080p though. If they ever release a Super Wii U that does, I will buy it.

          • companyoflosers

it wouldnt look any different. the human eye isnt capable of detecting any difference between 720p or 1080p on a tv screen below 22 inches in size. scientific fact right there. any tv that has a screen below that size and a 1080p or higher resolution simply does it so they can raise the price higher. having a 1080p screen would serve no other purpose other than making it more expensive. the resolution on the gamepad already looks just as good as 180p because the console runs at a native 1080p and down-sizes that to 720p. they call that supersampling which is basically free anti-aliasing without any of the extra needed processing power normally needed to perform anti aliasing. which for those who dont know what thay is, it basically takes out jegged edges and makes the game look more realistic like you are looking through a window at the game instead of a screen.

          • Michael Hancock

Hmmm, I wonder why that Netflix loading circle looks so very jaggy on the gamepad, in contrast to how it looks on the TV.

          • companyoflosers

its a netflix thing. plus thats different, that streaming two seperate things to two outputs, not taking one output and downsizing it. GAMES run at 1080p. doesnt mean apps always do. thats up to netflix.

          • Michael Hancock

Yeah but the resolution on the gamepad Netflix screen is significantly less defined than its TV screen counterpart. You’re telling me that the Netflix app is what is causing this and was specifically designed to run at a lower resolution on the gamepad? That doesn’t sound right.

          • companyoflosers

you are using one specific instance involving a third party app (not a game) to argue that the gamepad should have been 1080p, when our eyes are physically incapable of detecting a difference on a screen smaller than 22 inches. i didn’t work on the netflix app, im sure alot of what is on netflix isn’t actually hd so it doesn’t receive any down scaling or supersampling treatment. all i know is that i personally believe that when you look at a GAME played o the tv and compare it to how that same GAME plays on the gamepad, you either dont see a difference, or it could wind up looking surprisingly a bit better than the tv due to that free antialiasing that comes from doing that. there is absolutely no point in making a screen that small 1080p. were they to do that, theyd have to raise the price of the console which is already having issues maintaining a price point that makes it practical for them to sell. it just wouldnt happen with nitendo.

          • paddle008

It’s the GamePad’s video compression, it makes red jagged. Just look at Mario on the GamePad vs another character.

          • Michael Hancock

            I’ll check it out, Paddle.

          • Justagamer

            Yeah!

      • Shy Guy

More than once now I’ve been playing another console and caught myself looking down at the controller expecting to see a map or other information. It’s also really nice how I can prop the gamepad on the stand and watch Netflix, Hulu, or Youtube on it while doing stuff on my computer.

And for some reason it still makes me giggle with satisfaction every time I watch Super Mario Bros Super Show with Danny Wells and Captain Lou Albano (available on Netflix) on a Nintendo console.

    • GABRIEL GARCIA

BAYONETTA 2 I will make her my girlfriend ;)

  • RyuNoHadouken

nice video….to the point and truthfull

    • DarkYoshi

Yes, but Kinsley’s article made GameSpot video look bad. Shame on you.

EDIT: Shame on Kinsley* sorry for being unclear

      • Mario

I thought the video was great.

        • DarkYoshi

          And it was.

      • RyuNoHadouken

shame on me for liking the video? i wasnt talking about the article

        • DarkYoshi

I was unclear, I meant shame on Kinsley.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, but they left out some important information.
      -Its a dying console
      -It doesnt have enough shaders
-It cant bareley do what a modern IPhone can
-Its main focus is grandmas and little childrens
-Nintendo buildt it on slavery like factories where children work to get the price down
-Nintendo have been lying the whole generation, and will likely continue to do so
-Miyamoto have become a lazy dandy boy, and refuses to do any good games anymore
-Reggies drug problem made N. look really bad on VGX
-Iwata is more busy visiting brothels than running a company
-Nintendo lost basically all financial assets, dropping down almost 80% the last year
-Nintendo have stolen most of their creative ideas from others, putting them out of business
-Before N. started with videgames they ran brothels, so most of the staff have background from either being pimps or prostitutes. That mentality runs deep.

It can all be summed up in the Nintendo Triforce of Ignorance, Arrogance and Greed.

      • 3DS_2DS
      • DarkYoshi

I actually laughed Magnus, great joke

      • Arthur Jarret

HEY! That’s unfair… all companies directors visit brothels, and they all use child slave labour to cut costs (all consoles are made at Foxconn).

Now, Nintendo should use their darn experience and make me my pimpin’ game!

        • Magnus Eriksson

True. Mario need som whoring, thats for sure. Mario Kart/GTA crossover?

          • Arthur Jarret

Oh yeah, show me the Peach, baby!

So, daisy… wanna see my donkey kong?
I got mushrooms and a magic wand, you know.

            oh, well… I dunno…

Look how much these mushrooms make me grow

uh… I think your princess is in another castle, mario…

  • Spookoyo

I like how the word “Nintendo” has always seemed to be a word of top quality, wonderful, and fun filled games.

The word Microsoft just makes me think of Windows 95 and the word Sony just reminds me of movies and headphones.

    • DarkYoshi

Nintendo has always been social gaming. I’ve had much fun with family and friends, and consoles like the N64 left many great memories. When my brother comes every once in a while, we set up the N64 and play some Smash Brothers.

      <3

      • Colton Kelsey

        That Ocarina and perfect dark

    • The Clockwork Being

Well knowing what Nintendo means makes it all the better. Nintendo=Leave luck to heaven.

With that name and meaning it can only say that you are something special.

    • Squid

Microsoft reminds me of error screens,

      • Shota

        so true

  • Leo

John Kinsley, i could give you the most “obvious” reasons why you should be fired from WiiU Daily.

    • Matthew Stapleton

I like how he said that “we” at Wii U Daily, when it’s always him complaining about the Wii U. He should just transfer to Xbox One Daily and be done with it.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Not true. Also Zaccari and Ashley have pointed out errors on the Wii U on several occations.

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

i have no money so that’s the reason i don’t buy a wii u but I WANT IT

    • Daniel Carvalho

Same for me. I have no money, but I’m saving to pay my studies overseas. Once I’m overseas, then I’ll get my Wii U (for 25% of the price I would pay here in Brazil)!

      • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

        i’m still 15 so i can’t earn money

        • DarkYoshi

Do chores for your parents, ask for some work. Wish money for your birthday, etc. Just because you’re 15 doesn’t mean you can’t earn yourself a few bucks :)

          • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

dat is het ook niet Shota

        • Daniel Carvalho

Don’t worry about that, I’m 20 and I can’t earn money either. I went for a job interview for receptionist in a hotel, the manager was complaining about the last guy he hired being incompetent and not knowing any other language than Portuguese (I speak English and Japanese aside from Portuguese, and I know I’m good at everything if try), so I had a job guaranteed, right?

No, he wanted his receptionist to also work on the parking lot, so I needed a driver’s license, which I don’t posses. That’s right, the receptionist has to do work that is not on the contract, needs the qualification for two completely different positions, and only gets paid for one. And here’s the best part, instead of hiring me under the condition that I take driving classes to fit both positions, he denied hiring me to look for someone who could fit the description he wanted. The result? I’m still looking for a job and he is still looking for that one guy! And that’s how things work here in Brazil: people looking for jobs and companies looking for employees but never hiring anyone because they want everyone they hire to have more qualifications than the job asks for.

          • Shota

wish i knew you in real life. i would have helped you out

          • Magnus Eriksson

Lol, here in Norway its more difficult to get jobs for being overqualified than underqualified.

          • Daniel Carvalho

Here you have to be overqualified to get a horrible job, but if you’re too much overqualified, you may not get it too because they’d have to pay you more than minimum wage.

          • Arthur Jarret

I’m 30, didn’t enroll into college after high school and managed to land a job at an R&D dept for consumer electronics and make about the same as a university graduate…

So I’d like to say qualifications are way overrated… but I know I got lucky.

  • WiiUisgaming

Why is Nintendo not doing adds like this one?

    • WiiUisgaming

If Nintendo do adds like this, it would have more sells.

  • Marlon Frijters

Congrats guys, you make from a positive video a negative article!! Just great -.-

  • DarkYoshi

    *Gamespot, not Gamestop x)

Great video, John Kinsley acts like a shitty fanboy here. Just because some people over at GameSpot were negative to the Wii U, doesn’t mean we have to assume every one of them are Xbox and PS fanboys. Kinsley, please use the comment section for criticism, and/or personal meanings, like Ashley.

    • Deadpool U

True but for me personally I cant trust gamespot ever since the SLW review and ever since they gave the Wii U version of Rayman legends the lowest score.

    • Ducked

How on earth is Kinsley a nintendo fanboy?

      • DarkYoshi

In terms of taking a giant compliment negatively, that is pretty fanboyish

    • GregoryTheRainMaker

J.K. is far from a fanboy….a Nintendo fanboy at that.

  • Assassinated23

GameSpot and GameStop are NOT interchangeable! Two completely different companies! You keep switching back and forth between them.

  • Mario

I definitely don’t see a world without Nintendo just yet.

    • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

Duh or you never standing here Mario

      • Mario

        Heh. Right.

        • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

          Hehe

  • Squid

Well honestly, you DO need to point out the obvious because a lot of people are too stupid to notice it.

Im not going to watch it it seems i’ve overdone it when it comes to chasing articles and videos about new info for the wii u lol but i will say this pokemon snap 2 2014 bring back the softcore gamers lol.

  • Luna Moonfang

    -Just some off-topic info-
Capcom announced Monster Hunter 4G in Japan.
Now i can cry more over this game, kthxbye
EDIT: NOW CAPCOM HAS ANNOUNCED A ULITMATE VERSION FOR THE WEST
    HYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYPE (2015)

    • Akatosh

If that’s true I’m in trouble. I’m still only on HR 7.

  • TheHaydenator

Really? They made a video not that long ago saying not to buy a Wii U and that you should wait

  • Nintenjoe82

Besides the fact there are better things to say about Wii U and the fact this video highlights unreleased games as reasons to buy, why would anybody complain about this video?

Gamespot stating the obvious instead of shouting “we’re confused”, “this game was ok but we’re giving it a 2/10″ or “Pachter said _____” is better for Wii U.

  • JB

You guys are slacking. Since no one else is going to say it, I will:

Didn’t that GameSpot video feel like a John Kinsley article to you? :-)

    • Dáibhí wotshissurname

That’s a bit of a paradox. If you’re saying it’s bad, like John’s articles, therefore this article is good, and in the Big Book of Kingsley Law, that cannot happen.

      • JB

I’m not saying it’s good or bad particularly more than it’s like a semi-positive article from Kinsley. He’ll state the good, but not before he talks about the negative and he’ll still sprinkle in a little negative in the positive throughout.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

That’s basically his style. No one can say he doesn’t talk about the positives.

          • JB

Exactly. I’m not mad at him.

  • Bob Singh

    Gamespot or Gamestop?

  • Ducked

They forgot games like Yarn Yoshi, Fire Emblem x Shin Megami, and 3rd party games like Project Cars and Watch Dogs.

Shin Megami x Fire Emblem (December 2014)
    Fast Racing Neo (August 2014)
    Hyrule Warriors (October 2014)

    Bayonetta 2 (May 2014)
Animal Crossing Wii U (November 2014)
    Kingdom Hearts III (November 2015)

    Project Cars (September 2014)
Star Fox Wii U (July 2015)
Donkey Kong 3D World (October 2015)
    Kirby 3D World (January 2016)
    Pikmin 4 (March 2016)

    • Saul Rivera

X 2015?…the reason I first bought a Wii U was for X…it better be released this year =_=

    • Kyle

You got a realistic lineup there, but a few problems I’d like to make.

      – You kinda left MK8 out, I say late March.
      – I don’t think X will take that long, but maybe
      – I really don’t hope that Zelda U will take that long…
      – Would like ZombiU sequel, doubt it would ever happen.
      – Pikmin is a nice franchise, but it’s not major enough to sell LOTS of copies. Replace with Metroid and switch its date with Starfox.

      • Ducked

Well I said my dream line up, so some of them are hardly realistic. And I left out MK 8 because it releases in the Spring, and DK TF out because it’s out next month. I just did the ones unannounced or not confirmed

Edit: And Hyrule Warriors is only coming out because Zelda U will take that long sadly

Is it GameStop the store or GameSpot the website?

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

How are you confusing Gamespot and Gamestop so easily in this article? How?

  • Dáibhí wotshissurname

I retract the “John Kingsley is right” statement. He’s slagging off this video as though oldies don’t need to be told what an iPad is or kids what a Raspberry Pi can do.

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

    I think J.K. is trolling. T.T

  • Dáibhí wotshissurname

Seriously, this guy is just annoying. Does he even have a Wii U?

    • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

      Maybe

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

Nobody cares what Gamespot says…I don’t go to their site for Nintendo related content….I tend to ignore them majority of the time. This article was useless.

John Kinsley, I regard you as the worst writer for this site. All your articles literally irk me.

I love my Wii U and God help it’ll live the next few years so I can enjoy it with all those amazing exclusive games. Whatever happens, Nintendo, I will always love you…

    GameStop? Gamestop?
I disagree about how the G-Pad feels (not how it looks), but this is not a terrible advertisement. They actually point out how people are still confused about whether it’s a console or an add-on.
    A $300 bundle gets you the $250 console, and a game. Since games are $60, that’s a good deal……

  • Dallas Cooper

Christ there John, got a bit of a beef with this guy???

surprised gamespot allowed anything remotely positive to be said about nintendo. they’ve been notorious for bashing the wii u lately and they even snuck a few shots at it into this video. let me be clear, the wii u IS less powerful in the hardware department than the xb1 or ps4 but being the least powerful of the three does not make it underpowered as most people have been saying. an underpowered console would have trouble running the software being released on it and while that was true for one or two games around launch, it was a launch, there was gonna be glitches and they were fixed. xb1 and ps4 both had glitches of their own. the wii u runs the games that are on it amazingly well and they look great and play with no lag on the gamepad as well. i would not call the gamepad cheap, plasticky or bulky as they do in the video. its lighter than it looks, feels well built as most things from nintendo do. i can safely say that it could easily break a tv if you threw it at one like the wii remotes were notorious for and come out of it looking like a champ. nintendo builds things to last. sure its not an ideal controller for shooters, but i dont think we can get much further in that area beyond regular controllers, which the wii u has one called the pro controller. same thing as an xbox controller, the right analog stick is just above the buttons instead of below and it has chargable batteries that come with it and last 80 hours per charge. on another note, remeber how xb1 was being slammed for being 100 bucks more expensive than ps4? well even at its 300 dollar official price, the wii u is 100 cheaper than even the ps4, even with all the extra cords and chargers that come with it including a gamepad. So sure the wii u isnt as powerful as xb1 or ps4, you will get superior picture in the competition, the wii u is in no way underpowered. it runs what it is meant to and as long as developers dont slack off, it will run them reasonably well for the money you payed. the wii u has the potential to be as successful in the long run as the 3ds has. i applaud gamestop on taking a baby step in the right direction and doing some serious reporting on the wii u for once. they were right in pointing out people misconceptions about the wii u being an addon and i hope nintendo does something more about that other than just releasing posters. hopefully something that highlights the console a bit more and not just the gamepad. even being less powerful, if the wii u picks up the slack this year, it could still be a relatively successful console and a fine edition to anyone’s entertainment center.

    • C4

“i would not call the gamepad cheap, plasticky or bulky as they do in the
video. its lighter than it looks, feels well built as most things from
      nintendo do.”

It’s a good controller, sticks and D-Pad are easily among the best available and I like the slight roundness of the buttons and trigger placement, I just don’t really find it comfy to hold. I want something that fits my hands like a wider, larger Pro Controller with all GamePad features.

  • Steve

Still waiting for a Beyoneta 2 release date. And SSB!

  • Cahone

pikimin mario? move it to ps4.

    • Jon

never going to happen, I am pretty sure if Nintendo does ever go down, those title will be gone forever. Same with any other Nintendo IP.

      • 00EpicGamer00

Yeah, you’re right. (I don’t remember where or when this was said but) I remember Nintendo stating that if somehow they were to go bankrupt and be unable to make games anymore, they’ll take their IP’s with them.
And honestly, I never understood how the whole “bring Zelda to Xbox!” Ever started. Bringing Zelda to the Xbox would be like bringing The Last of Us to the Wii U. It wouldn’t make sense!
        And, you always hear people complaining that “Nintendo’s for kids”, “their characters are too kiddy” but then say they want the games on their system?….. -__-;
        (Sorry for my ranting :/)

        • Jon

pretty much how it works. People want Nintendo to bring them their games but don’t want the exclusives of their system to go on Nintendo.

  • MujuraNoKamen

Well they’re right about needing a Wii U but unsurprisingly GameSpot just took whatever opportunity to trash it – they constantly complain about power and 3rd party support but they failed to mention X, SMT/FE or Watch Dogs and how was Ghosts botched on Wii U? it works fine for me. Fuck you GameSpot even when they call the video “why you should buy a Wii U” they still said it’s not an essential purchase and trashed as many aspects of it that they could. I suppose it’s better than nothing but GS not so secretly want to tarnish Nintendo as much as it can.
It would also have been worth mentioning that it’s a lot cheaper than the competition with no additional fees for online and Off-TV play comes out of the box. We do have some great 3rd party games and the best exclusives.

  • Stephen

I bought an Xbox One on launch day and this passed Thursday bought a Wii U because I just want something that works.
Load times, server fails, online lagging… I don’t have to worry about any of that for Super Mario 3D World!

  • Justagamer

John Kinsley You are the only one of the writers on this site that bashes Wii U and NIntendo so shame on you mr Kinsley

  • Arthur Jarret

The Wii U has been criticized by gaming publications from around the world — yes, even from us here at Wii U daily…

US? Way to pass the blame of pulling negative articles out of your ass on the rest of the group, John. Your articles can usually be spotted by the sneer in the title.

  • Jonathan P Mugridge

It still amazes me that one of the Wii U’s coolest features is not mentioned by anyone. I love playing COD Black Ops 2 and Ghostsmultiplayer online with another friend that’s actually sitting next to me, one using the tv the other issuing the game pad.

  • SkyStormXD

    GameSpot? or GameStop?

  • Prizm

Looks like a bit of a suck-up job from GameSpot…they need to keep the advertising $$$ flowing from Nintendo.

    • bd-lt-dnkr

They are doing the same thing for several consoles, including the 360 which they are showing today.

  • SuperSonicBrawler

The bash on Sonic towards the end was completely unnecessary. D: But in all seriousness though, the last thing Nintendo needs right now is pity. The way this guy phrases it is basically “we should all give Nintendo our money because we don’t want them ending up like SEGA.” Which is hardly the issue here. If fans just start blindly throwing money at Nintendo out of pity and fear, nothing is going to get better. The reason the Wii U is selling poorly right now is simple: IT NEEDS MORE GAMES!!! And the games that it does have feel incomplete. As far as I’m concerned, until Nintendo can get their act together and starts releasing more quality games for the system, they don’t deserve my money. I’ve been holding off on buying Super Mario 3D World because Nintendo has yet to realize the importance of putting online multiplayer in their games. The game was clearly designed with the intention of playing with multiple people, and since I have no one locally to play with, the game doesn’t appeal to me nearly as much as it would with online, or as much as a single player focused game like Super Mario Galaxy would. And the reason I don’t own the Wonderful 101 is the same reason I don’t own Pikmin 3. It simply doesn’t look like a game I would be interested in. I do own WWHD, but even that is just a remake. Not a reason to buy a console. You reward quality, not mediocrity. If Nintendo wants our money, let them earn it by making the games gamers want.

  • Geoffrey Tasker

Hey, pretentious head line guy. Don’t be a douche. At least they are trying to push the console

  • FutureFox

“Honestly, this video just seems like a cheap ploy from GameSpot to get some Nintendo fans over to their side,”

Well John, I guess your articles are a cheap ploy to help ensure they reach their goal.

  • http://www.tohodo.com/ Tom

    It’s GameSpot, GameStop.

  • starwars360

Hmmm video show XB1 title’s Ryse: Son of Rome. It is should remove it off and put X for Wii U!!!! Nice video but small incorrect and error since Ryse is not Wii U title.

    • Goob1246

The video isn’t stating that Ryse is in the Wii U, but rather that The Wonderful 101 is better than Ryse, despite it’s few problems.

  • Razo_E

Gamespot, yet your article states GameSTOP about 30 or 40 times. Proof-read, folks.

  • JVAN63

I doubt John Kinsley could write ANY article without either bashing Nintendo, or at best, giving it a backhanded compliment. This guy should go write for Xbone (misspell intentional) daily or PS4 daily. And if he thinks he’s any authority on the industry, definitely would not be confused with the major difference between Gamepot and Gamestop. I doubt the guy even owns a Wii U. Dump this guy and get someone that actually PLAYS and ENJOYS Nintendo, like Ashley King.

  • Simon Stevens

Why is there always such a shock and gasp whenever somebody says anything positive about Nintendo?, though I’ll admit GS probably have dishonourable intention, but it’s always a conspiracy whenever anybody says anything positive about Nintendo systems, the Wii U isn’t a bad console, if you merit it on it’s game library, which is what it should be about really, this negative buzz started with turd parties, it wasn’t the console’s fault the games didn’t sell, just that nobody who owned a Wii U console was remotely interested in the games on offer, Nintendo consoles are the only real odd one out in the crowd, that’s not a bad thing either, it just means there’s a different audience to serve, I would suggest third parties should either bring out non mature, no generic games to the system, or none at all, because even if you put, say, call of duty on the 3ds and somehow it had all the bells and whistles of the console version, it still wouldn’t sell, not Nintendo’s fault, not the consumers fault, it’s just a different audience, Nintendo and everybody else may have to start approaching it that way for it to be even considered remotely successful, why Iwata thought it would sell like the Wii though is beyond me, I think he needs to get down with some real expectations for the system.

Reasons to buy a Wii U in 2014:
    1. Super
    2. Smash
    3. Bros

That video was terrible lol he missed out a lot of the other great games and he cudnt think of anymore than 3 or 4 games this year lol theres about 9-12 games im getting this year cant wait for them!

  • Deadpool U

Just because a game has the characters doesn’t mean they’re rehashed it means Nintendo has been able to innovate with their games.

  • Mr Ninty

have you ever noticed that its very rare for a company in this industry to keep its IP’S in a almost perfect condition. the zelda series is like 25years old and has been one of the best series around with almost all the games rating above the 8/10. Nintendo takes his time with zelda even if it could boost its sales with milions.

even the mario games like mario bros, mario kart, super mario wil all score high every time cause nintendo doesn’t rush it games and strives for perfection. by doeing so you wil almost never have a bug or a glitch in your games.

while other games are being terrorized by there own wrong doing. battlefield4 was rushed to compete with cod and is to this day a very glitchy/buggy game. cod comes out every year and the sp sucks only reason it sells is due to the online community

AC also comes out every year and quality-wise its doing good, but the story is running thin. gears of war is a good game but the game is finished part 3 was a good ending for a series, and judgement was just a turd of a game.

but im drifting off. what i mean is nintendo takes its time with his games. the could release starfox,metriod,f-zero every year for now own but it wil degenerate the game and it will ultimately kill the franchise. by not releaseing the games on a year-on-year basis the can extend the games lifespan for many many years. while cod, fifa, battlefield, AC and more games will die this generation if the dont stop releaseing them almost every year. and will ultimately end sealed up in a box untill they are almost forgotten and will get a reboot like tomb raider.

I would really like the Wii U to have more Memory.
8Gb is way too little and 32Gb is not enough.
It should be 500Gb, even 320Gb would be more than enough.
They should stop making the Wii U 8Gb and lower it’s price to remove it from the market.
Make place for better and improved.

  • Jack5221

I don’t own a PS4, my friend does. But I’ve used the DS4 and while its a very nice controller, I have to say that the touch screen pad on it is completely useless. The Wii U Pro controller is the best controller right now in my opinion. Its light, feels good in my hands and has 80 hours of battery life.

  • Arthur Jarret

I agree, it’s the only controller where you can hold thevpad in your lap while keeping your arms relaxed. All others just have you holding this tiny controller in a cramped up-way.

I do prefer the DS4’s analog triggers and concave analog sticks, though.

  • Andrew Clear

Can’t you just use a usb hard drive ?

  • Jon

I can get an extra 1-2 TB of space for an extra $40-60

  • Crillan

I believe they’ve already stopped producing the basic model with 8Gb. The reason they only have 8 or 32 Gb of storage is because it would have increased the price of the console to include more. The majority of their customers won’t even use that much data so their business model is to have the few that want it buy an external HD. That way, it’s voluntary to spend more money for more storage, rather than forcing it upon everyone, the majority of which won’t even use it. It’s most likely cheaper per Gb to buy your own external HD anyway than to have them include it in the console.

  • Robert Butters

Yea I bought a 1 TB Toshiba for around a hundred dollars. But it has to be dedicated to the Wiiu. http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/external_usb_devices.jsp

  • Ducked

    Thanks!

  • ~OMEGA~

nah thats windows…… how about this?

  • Arthur Jarret

Ah, I did a similar project – except I took out the controller PCB, soldered all 25 cables of a printer LPT cable on it (mapped, of course) for various controllers (PS2, PS3, Wii, N64, Gamecube) – 2 for each controller – and did the same for 2x 10 Sanwa buttons, and stick (built into an old desk) so I have a 2-player arcade fightstick with interchangeable PCBs using LPT cables (up to 4 at one time with 2 printer switches).

I never finished it, though – it works but I took it apart to add a final coat of paint, a line-drawing that contains 2 fighters from every major franchise and a scratch-proof coating, as well as rubber pads near the stick. – I never did that stuff… maybe after I finish my kitchen I will complete it.

  • Jacob D. Taylor

That’s my reasoning. That was Nintendo’s reasoning. People want there own method of storage anyway. (At least I think so) personally I’d love 500 gigs of internal memory but at the same time does anyone remember the massive piece of junk the 360 had on top of it? The PS3 was only 60/80 at first too.

  • Arthur Jarret
