Nintendo confirms Mario Kart 8 coming sometime in May

Mario-Kart-8-5

[Editor's Note: As many in the comments have pointed out, this has since been confirmed by Nintendo from their conference roundup. Sorry about that!]

Much like the title of this article says, senior research analyst David Gibson tweeted some news on the upcoming Mario Kart 8 yesterday, he said the following;

Gamepad profile to be increased, Mario Kart 8 to be released in May, fast start up of Gamepad designed so can play without TV quickly.

This Twitter post came after Nintendo’s financial briefing.

Much speculation is going on about what is meant by ‘Gamepad profile to be increased’. Some people thinking it could be smaller and sleeker GamePads others believing it to be an increase of innovative ways in which the GamePad is used, either way we are going to see change (hopefully)!

Wow Zac and Wii U daily, Read the Nintendo release. Page two. Its not a RUMOR.

    http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/140130/02.html

    • Wayne Beck

lol Talk about the least Hyped release date announcement of a AAA Game in 25 years.

    • Josiah Parsons

Also real MarioKart 8 box art! It looks EPIC!

      • rp17

Ikr. Did no one else care about this?

        • Joel Cruz

It looks like what a N64 game box art i hope tjis is a good sign of great games returning one day

  • Lil J Moore

    Not a rumor

    • Yousif Alromaithi

May is gonna be awesome because I am done with college. Also where is Jan direct.

      • DragonSilths

Isn’t happening. Iwata is to busy making his plan to fix Nintendo.

        • Yousif Alromaithi

Hmm so he had the direct delayed to make sure he makes a big announcement while everything is ready to be shown. I think once his plan is fixed he will make a direct, probably on February.

          • DragonSilths

We should get one in February. And it better be a “Big” one or Nintendo is continuing to waste both their’s and our time.

  • AAAkabob

Iwata said it himself at an official conference.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Finally a good game from Nintendo in the horizon. Only 1 1/2 year before a good game appeared. If we are lucky Wii U might have six great titles in the end of its lifetime. Awesome!

    • Zuxs13

oh come on, you know that is just plain BS.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Here I try to be positive and cheer Nintendo for doing a good thing for a change. And you guys just come and troll me with your everlasting negativity. Are you not ashamed of yourself?

        • cThreep

Pretty sure the last year and a half has seen some rather incredible games. I only have 6 games and they were all available at the system’s launch and I love them.

          • GermGerm

What games are those, if you don’t mind me asking? :)

          • cThreep

Zombi U (I love that game), Batman Arkham City, Call of Duty Black ops 2, Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Just Dance 4… although we did just get Wii Fit U and I’ve downloaded Dr. Luigi, both of which were not available at launch.

          • GermGerm

Zombi U is the scariest game I have ever played haha. Batman is super fun. The fighting style blows my mind.

          • Magnus Eriksson

There was good games of course. This one for example; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYEb19dBGzc

        • crocodileman94

I’m upvoting your comments just because I know you’re joking.

        • matthew garcia

Im with u on this. I want nintendo to do well but nintendo will sooner get there head out of there ass if were hard on them. We work hard for are money and purchased there console now show us the value of it

    • Con

Nintendo makes a good game every once a year.

    • matthew garcia

Yeah I agree. At the most 6 games that are actually system sellers

  • Zuxs13
  • Rick Valenta

Pretty stoked for this!! It has some big boots to fill, Sonic All Stars Unleashed was the most epic cart racing game I have played since Double Dash and Diddy Kong Racing!!

  • Denvy

May…is so long off… I know it’ll be worth the wait, but a little disappointing nonetheless.

    • GregoryTheRainMaker

      It’s better than nothing.

      • Denvy

So we should just be happy without another software drought?

        • sharlo galmo

We will announce the specific release dates of each software title and the release of new titles in other opportunities such as Nintendo Direct, but today we would like to announce that a key title for Wii U this year, “Mario Kart 8,” is scheduled to be released globally in May (though it says on page 6 of the supplemental information that it will be released in spring 2014). To create huge momentum, we would like to ensure that the release of titles such as “Mario Kart 8” is not a one-off event.

          • Denvy

That’s still very vague. Knowing that Tropical Freeze, SSB and MK8 are all key titles, they better have something interesting up their sleeves. It can’t be denied last year was extremely slow moving. This isn’t helping. If they would open up the floodgates on the VC, that would help a fair amount in the waiting process.

          • Denvy

            Btw, May IS Spring

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

    Finally confirmation! *cries*

  • Petri

There was nothing for this month, is there anything for March or April?
Reggies “no software drought” 2014 has not started that well…

    • greengecko007

Take anything he says with a grain of salt. It’s not like he has any control over how fast the games get finished. Additionally, a no software drought isn’t feasible without adequate 3rd party support. Nintendo isn’t big enough to have a 1st party title out every month.

      • Aleks

They sure are. Ahem, 2 words Virtual Console. 2 more words, major dissapointment!

      • MujuraNoKamen

Reggie may not have any control over how fast the games are made but EAD does so what the hell are they doing? this is going to be like last year all over again, yeah we had some awesome stuff but it came after heavy delays with lengthy waiting periods in between.
I’m glad you said that about 3rd parties Nintendo isn’t doing much on that front and I’m a bit annoyed with how many fans dismiss 3rd party games as unimportant. Still I think Nintendo is big enough to fix this release schedule, even if 1 major game a month is too much they shouldn’t be trailing so far behind, 0.8 games a months should be a good target. Fixing the VC would really help the release schedule out – Earthbound was one of the best Wii U games last year, more like that please.

    • sharlo galmo

      Just wait and be patience,

We will announce the specific release dates of each software title and the release of new titles in other opportunities such as Nintendo Direct, but today we would like to announce that a key title for Wii U this year, “Mario Kart 8,” is scheduled to be released globally in May (though it says on page 6 of the supplemental information that it will be released in spring 2014). To create huge momentum, we would like to ensure that the release of titles such as “Mario Kart 8” is not a one-off event.

    • NkoSekirei

all im gonna say is nintendo direct lets wait for that before jumping to conclusions.

    • Petri

      @NkoSekirei:disqus
I wish they could announce directs sooner than 1 day before it happens.
I do expect next direct to have Bayonetta 2 release date.
      @sharlogalmo:disqus
I have all the patience in the world. I have 28 retail games, and I’m done with only 5 of them (done as played through, or played enough).
Only thing I cant wait for, is Bayonetta 2, better be release date on next direct.
      @greengecko007:disqus
As long as they deliver Bayonetta 2, I will be satisfied for next 5 years.
There are other amazing games coming too, but Nintendo is like an artist, that refuses to show its work, before its done.
But still, it wouldn’t hurt them to get some 3rd party developers on board.

    • Gameonfool

Yeah the wii u could do with something between donkey kong and mario kart maybe like x in march or something.

      • Petri

I dont think X would be ready this hafl of the year, maybe we get a proper title by E3.

  • Ace

Can’t wait for May! Gonna be a good month.

  • Mario

Mario: Mamma mia!! I need a to tell my brother about this!

  • matthew garcia

Sounds like they will be droughts inbetween games again this year

    • sharlo galmo

Why, this is what Iwata says,

We will announce the specific release dates of each software title and the release of new titles in other opportunities such as Nintendo Direct, but today we would like to announce that a key title for Wii U this year, “Mario Kart 8,” is scheduled to be released globally in May (though it says on page 6 of the supplemental information that it will be released in spring 2014). To create huge momentum, we would like to ensure that the release of titles such as “Mario Kart 8” is not a one-off event.

      • C4

That’s fine from his point of view. The first half of 2014 release list doesn’t look like it can create any momentum except with the Mario Kart 8 release.

Maybe he sees the second half as more important, which IMHO isn’t wrong itself? Wii U had like 4 major releases around last late summer – fall. But that still creates that “drought” in the first half.

In any case, may for MK8 means all other games can be shown on Nintendo Directs and the E3 (in June) and creating momentum from there on? Maybe that’s the plan. We’ll see :)

Unless there’s a surprise release of one of the games before may, but I think that’s a bad strategy to create hype or momentum.

  • Con

Mario kart Achievements would be a dream come true.

  • Con

So no games at coming in march or April? ? What the fuck Nintendo

    • NkoSekirei

how about be patience dude wait til the next direct coming soon it should announce wat games coming down the pipeline in the next few months till mario kart 8 comes out and besides i got plenty of games to keep me busy till then

      • Con

That wouldn’t be a problem if I actually had games to play on my wii u to keep me busy until I wait even longer for some good games

        • NkoSekirei

let me ask how many games do u have for the wii u?

          • Con

Three games only, two since super smash brothers isn’t on the wii u.

          • NkoSekirei

i have like 20 wii u games so far and to tell u there plenty of games for the wii u

          • Con

Wow, Well yes, there are games for the wii U but lets be honest, most of the games aren’t that great unless your buying it for an eight year old.the only game developers producing games for the system are Ubisoft and those games are cool. People like different things, am not trying to be a dick but I can’t be the only one thats tired of playing mediocre kiddie games on the Wii U. I only bought a wii u for the future gaames ( which am still waiting for) & because at the time it made since spending $300 instead of $500. But I’ll keep my fingers cross Nintendo

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Very true. Not everyone is interested in rated E games.

          • Denvy

So you think people pick their games solely on rating? If they do, they’re missing out on a lot.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Not everyone is into Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikmin or Pokemon. Those games happen to be E rated.

          • Denvy

So are you saying that people are turned off by the E rating, or just platforming as far as DK and Mario go? Sure I don’t like Pikmin at all, but that has nothing to do with rating. I don’t think many people make their decisions based on rating alone.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Never rating alone, no, but it does factor into it. Nintendo needs to take risks and create newer IP to lure in gamers. Mario and company isn’t going to cut it every generation.

          • Denvy

            Can’t argue with new IPs.

  • Arthur Jarret

Profile increase is used more, not a new design. It’s better to read the official press release, not retard analysts twitter feeds to get the actual news… :P

  • matthew garcia

I love nintendo but thankfully im not a nintendo fanboy and play other consoles so that the droughts wont be to bad

    • Schultz38

      I wish I had enough money for a PS4. :(

  • http://nintendopapercraftvideos.wordpress.com/ Sam

This game is gonna be AWESOME!!!

  • Schultz38

Nintendo. Really? May? What’s coming between DK and Mario Kart then? Just 3 months of nothing? C’mon.

    • NkoSekirei

did u forget that nintendo will have a direct coming soon revealing games that be coming for the next couple of months till may.Lets all have patience.

      • Denvy

Is this Direct Wii U exclusive? Or focusing mainly on Wii U?

      • Schultz38

It’s not a matter of patience. Nintendo should’ve already announced something for these empty months. It seems like bad business to me. Consumers are quite clear as to what they want from Nintendo. Namely, more games. And they seem to be ignoring them.

BTW, I’m a launch owner of the Wii U. I’ve had enough patience. :P I felt the same way towards the 3DS as I got it at launch too. It’s been over a year. Give me games!

        • Denvy

I agree there. WiiU launch owners have had plenty of patience. It’s wearing thin at this point.

          • thedeciderU

            ^^^ this

        • Magnus Eriksson

I here you brother. We shouldnt sit here now, we should be sitting in front of a pile of games having a hard time to decide what to play.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          Well said.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Im getting tired to read shit like this. 1 and 1/2 fucking year have past now. Nintendo fans are known for patience, but this is beyond the absurd. The ONLY reasonable explanation is that Nintendo are not doing their job well. Please understand Nintendo; -But you suck at whatever shit you are doing with this console.

        • NkoSekirei

im not disagreeing on waiting to long but u cant just rush them on getting their games out thats not wat nintendo wants or end up having a bad game thats broken and $hit….(cough)EA with battlefield4/getting sued by their own investors(cough).Besides many people here have multi consoles so stay busy for awhile.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

You know full well that Nintendo should have had a good lineup of games long ago. They had years to prepare for this and the switch to HD. There’s no excuse here. They had all the time in the world and their development times are far too slow. This is what happens when you don’t prepare for HD development. Nintendo completely derp’d here. Lol.

          • Schultz38

This is true. HD consoles have been out for a long time now. I’m fine that the Wii wasn’t HD. But Nintendo should’ve been experimenting and working on HD development a LONG time before the Wii U’s release. If they had done that properly, then this wouldn’t be an issue now.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Lol! True! Also they are going to turn this into some fitness device. And Nintendo fans are cheering it!?! WTF??? I promise you, Nintendo could have pulled of the most idiotic things and the fans would still cheering it as genius strike. A FUCKIN FITNESS CONSOLE? Sounds like an April fools joke to me. Im a gamer who wants to game, but Nintendo keeps on upsetting me. How the hell do they think? Whats the logical deduction here? Oh, we realize we dont have enough games, therefore we will spend hundreds og millions into turning this into a fitness machine… All about the games my ass! Iwata should be removed instantly.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

” Iwata should be removed instantly.”

That’s my wish this year for Nintendo. Change of leadership needs to happen now rather than later.

        • Con

          Preach on brother

      • Con

Why doesn’t Nintendo show some commercials instead of a Nintendo direct which not many will see since not alot of people have a wii U because they don’t know about it, hence needingmore wworldwide commercials

        • Old School

I can tell you why they use only Nintendo Direct…it’s because they are too cheap to spend the money on TV commercials! This saves them thousands of dollars! Little do they know, this is costing them so many potential Wii U customers.

          • Con

I agree to the 5th fucking power man.

          • http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008SRISGU#reader_B008SRISGU Adam Howell

If they used tv commercials I probably would see them.

          • thedeciderU

yes, more commercials, and commercials that you don’t feel embarassed when watching. there have been far too many cringe-worthy ads. plus, this system is not just for nerdy ass families and sad children

        • Denvy

Directs are fine to watch for us, but you’ve absolutely right. Unless you’re a Nintendo fan LOOKING for this news and information, you won’t be watching or even know they exist
          .

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I think people hear that enough from Iwata. ;P

    • C4

While I’m okay with the may release of MK8 itself, basically just one big release in spring looks too weak, as you said.

    • Con

My wii U would be collecting dust if I Didn’t have Injustice gods among us. Smh

      • Schultz38

Not mine. Pikmin 3, CoD Ghosts, Black Ops 2, SM3DW, Rayman Legends and Monster Hunter have kept my Wii U dust-free. It saddens me, however, that Nintendo hasn’t been able to provide games for a less die-hard-Nintendo audience as I’m guessing you are.

        • Con

Yes it is a shame, but hopefully more good news are coming. Am glad your having more fun than me though.

    • DragonSilths

Bayonetta 2 and Yoshi Land U might come in March/April.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Doubt it. They would have mentioned release dates by now to start hyping them up.

        • DragonSilths

You forget Dr. Luigi? They announced it and released a month after they released it. Nintendo = no logic. Iwata could say we are going to show off a new Zelda game, then the time comes and its a fucking toaster that makes Mario toast instead. Logic cannot and will never be used with Nintendo.

      • Schultz38

IF they are, then Nintendo should’ve announced it earlier this month. There’s such a thing as hype! I know, I know. Wait for the Direct. This elusive direct has supposedly been any day now for 2 freaking weeks. If Nintendo wants post Christmas sales to keep up, then they should give consumers a reason to buy their system.

        • DragonSilths

Iwata is a bit busy right now with trying to make a plan to fix the damn company lol.

          • DragonSilths

Delusional Nintendo fanboy probably thumbs me down.

      • Denvy

They might come out in winter too…

        • DragonSilths

Bayonetta 2 nah. Yoshi…maybe Its to far in development.

    • Nate

Isn’t the Zelda themed Dynasty Warriors game supposed to come out sometime in the spring?

  • Brandon

This doesnt affect me at all, but this is why nintendo needs more 3rd party support. Ps4 and xbox will have great games coming and also new dlc and indies.

    • NkoSekirei

i heard that ubisoft has several triple AAA titles in the works for the wii u besides watch dogs which its still coming.

      • Brandon

Thats good. The wii u only has a few 3rd party games and thats not enough and that seems to show.

        • NkoSekirei

some of the blame goes to the 3rd party devs and they should know better cause games sell consoles not just sit on their @$$es and wait for the console sales to go up.

          • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Especially when many of the 3rd party games were released missing features like online play or content, no extras like DLC, or were released later than the other platforms all from the very beginning. Then when their late, gimped and buggy port of a game did not sell well they blamed Nintendo and their fans.

I guess the concept of releasing a quality game on time with all the features must have escaped them.

          • Brandon

Thats true, but then again it depends on the audience on that platform.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

It has more to do with the fact they aren’t interested in the Wii U to be honest. They aren’t trying hard because they lack the motivation to develop for it. They just prefer working on other platforms that suit their interests. If you think that they’re idiots for not doing anything on it, then that’s your opinion. I do agree that it was bad of them to release poor ports to the Wii U, but that’s old news at this point. Looking closely at the situation, it’s easy to see they have little desire to develop for Nintendo. Everyone has their reasons.

  • Justin Carlson

Please don’t force gamepad use with the game unless it really enhances the experience. A second screen for player two would be just fine with me.

  • Fierce-Deity Link

i’m not really too hyped for mario kart… tbh, the one for the wii was just ok imo.. was kind of lackluster for me so i’m hoping this one is a lot better.. also, they better fix battle mode.. the one for the wii was abysmal

  • Javy G

Nintendo needs to throw all their advertisement cash into this game! TV commercials, McDonalds Sweepstakes and Happy Meal toys, a competition event, a Mario Kart TV show and then the movie, give an IGN giveaway with a customized MK Wii U with an actual fully functional Mario Kart!

    • Old School

      I agree 100%!!!!

This is Nintendo’s game that will make or break 2014, what are they waiting for!? This is not just a regular game here, this is what will sell thousands of Wii U’s if they do this right. Nintendo can’t expect to do online advertising once in a while with this game. They need to do monthly updates, even if it’s little details, any damn thing will help. I know so many people that have avoided buying a Wii U until they see if Mario Kart 8 will be a garbage like MK7. If they only could create some hype (Smash Bros anyone?) they could entice all the people thinking about getting a Wii U and also people that are deciding over Wii U, Xbox 1 or PS4.

Someone tell Nintendo to get rid of Mario Kart 8’s advertising team and hire some real people that know what there doing.

    • Denvy

I want happy meal toys! I loved collecting the Super Mario Bros. 3 toys when I was a kid!

    • Dell Goodman

I completely agree, Nintendo need to advertise every feature in this title, and highly over advertise that it will be an online multiplayer kart racing game. The Wii U hasn’t really had much advertising in the online world with it’s use of multiplayer, so Nintendo need to show off that feature and it will get a lot more people on board.

Also, Nintendo need to move away from this whole living room experience and let people play other games online (Mario 3D world anyone?).

  • Aleks

So whats to play in the 60+ days between DK and Mariokart?

  • zerooooo

    What the fuck.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Wait until May? Patience? The next one who mentions E3…

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/22/Falling_Down_%281993_film%29_poster.jpg

  • MujuraNoKamen

May!? FFS! I was annoyed when they said it wouldn’t be out in 2013 but May, I think March would have been as far as they could push it. It always seemed like DK would be the 1st major game of 2013 followed by MK8 but that’s a 3 month gap! Have they learned anything from the mistakes they’ve made? So much for fixing the release schedule, how long till Bayonetta, how much will X be delayed by? Will they even get a new Zelda on Wii U?
Mario Kart is Nintendo’s system seller they should have everyone focused on that project to get it finished and out ASAP, if we had that and DK in Q1 then a wait until Spring or even early Summer would be OK as we’d have something to play but instead we’ve got a whole load of nothing.

    • MujuraNoKamen

Another thing that doesn’t fill me with confidence is the way they’ve
been saying “people don’t understand the relevance of the gamepad so
we’ll come up with more uses for it” this fine but they think not having
      enough to do with he Gamepad is what’s holding Wii U back it isn’t;
it’s games and advertising. They could make us touch and shake the pad
as much as they like it still wont sell if people don’t know Wii U
exists. Tell your marketing team to do something and you might get
somewhere. I also worry that we’ll end up with a load of gimmicky
implementation in games now, not to mention even more delays to cover
the development time it takes to add these functions.

      • C4

Something like Nintendo Land with more SP content would have probably done that. Like a full StarFox stage where you have the cockpit on TV and part of it on the GamePad, or a Mario 3D with a manipulatable stage by touch or motion. Like always the idea of Nintendo Land was good, but apart from the Local MP it could have been much more.

Actually I don’t know if we really should expect more then a Nintendo Land Resort from that quote :P

    • NkoSekirei

gamestop has bayonetta 2 release date listed around may

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Gamestop only has estimates or guesses. Chances are it won’t be released until the summer, especially with Mario Kart being released that month and more than likely Smash Bros will be around June or July.

        • Petri

I think Mario Kart will boost sales more than Smash Bros,
Maybe if they slipped Bayonetta 2 on July, and Smash Bros in June.
But direct in next week or 2, and then all marketing rage mode.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Boost sales, yes. Boost hardware sales? That remains unclear considering that most top quality Nintendo games haven’t done enough. We shall see, though.

If what we have seen so far, is “top quality”, then I must have overestimated Nintendo quality.
But Mario Kart, and later on Mario Kart bundle (by holiday seasons) might do something.

        Thats not accurate

      • MujuraNoKamen

That’s not official but I guess it’s possible. If that comes in between DK & Kart then great but still there’s a strong chance that we’ll have nothing after DK till MK8 and no matter what’s launching when, Kart should not be kept waiting till May 2014!

Shit you not the only one thinking the same thing. You know one of those games are gonna be delayed

Gawh I can’t wait to review this game, lol… I totally have plans to make this one an interesting episode, but since it’s so far out, I’ll have to wait until the game’s in my hands to make any sure-fire plans! So excited!

  • Rinslowe

May you say? Can’t complain with that!
    :)

I have no problem waiting, I am willing to wait even longer as long as they don’t make it weak like Mario Kart 7! Please don’t include any of MK7’s battle stages, they are all garbage. Make a feature to be able to see what our friends are doing. That way we don’t have to rely on other messaging systems. Please remove item spy! Give is a character roster bigger then Mario Kart Wii, along with more customization of mii’s and vehicles…get creative damnit!

I can’t wait for Mario Kart!!!
But there will be a mario strikers? a mario golf? a mario party? all with the online multiplayer?
I took the console only for these few games (and clearly for the new zelda, the new metroid)

  • Diana of Themyscira

Will it be coming the 3DS?

  • Marcos Parreira

We don’t have much gameplays for MK8 now, so… Can we still hope for some Double Dash in the game??? I loved that game, the version to ps2 was so awesome!!!
