Rumor: Nintendo Press event at the end of January?

Jools Watsham replies 'maybe, maybe not' on his Tweet

Jools Watsham

Jools Watsham, the developer behind Mutant Mudds recently made an announcement on Twitter about revealing his (new?) FPS for the 3DS.

We are finalizing a playable demo of our (new?) FPS on 3DS. It’s pretty stellar. Hoping it’ll be part of a press event at the end of Jan. :)

Later on somebody left Jools a comment asking wether it would be a Nintendo press event or not to which he replied:

Maybe. Maybe not. Either way, yes, definitely interesting! :)

So its still a little inconspicuous as to wether or not Nintendo will be holding a press event but it would definitely be a great way to give us a taste of what more is to come later on this year.

A noteworthy mention for those interested in this upcoming FPS for the 3DS, on the same Twitter post someone also expressed why they wanted to see the ‘Turok’ styled controls in the game (i.e. circle pad aiming, face buttons movement)

that’d free up dpad for item/weapon selection and shoulder buttons for using or jumping/shooting… as long as aiming/turning is analogue, running/strafing works just as well as digital input, imo.

To which Jools replied ‘We’ve got your covered.’

So I guess that gives us a little more insight in to some of the games mechanics. Do you think Nintendo will be having a press event at the end of the month? Let us know in the comments below.

If they are we will know in a week or so.

  • That guy who hates Spike

    2 Weeks?
If so, IGN, GameXplain and others should be getting their stuff soon.
It is interesting that Jools has shot downa few ideas, but is teasing on this one.
Clearly the demo event will be something interesting. Someone should contact Wayforward to see if they’re in the middle of prep as well.

  • Mario 1983

A 3DS XL with two analogue sticks would be nice.

    • Nintenjoe82

I’ve been holding off buying one in hope of that for a year now

      • Daniel Carvalho

If that’s the only reason you’ve been holding back, then go ahead and get your 3DS. You may not like having to plug that bulky accessory to have the second analog, but only a handful of games utilize it. It’s something you’re not gonna use in 90% of the games released for the portable.

        • http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008SRISGU#reader_B008SRISGU Adam Howell

I’d agree but I do feel sorry for lefty’s.

          • Daniel Carvalho

I don’t really have the right to say anything about it since I’m right-handed, but humans can adapt to everything if they really want to. As for the gaming industry, controllers have always been made taking right-handed people in mind (I have seen some PS2 controllers for left-handed people, but only in advertisements, never for sale or in someone’s house); taking that into consideration, I believe they’re used to playing with the standard setting, no?

          • http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008SRISGU#reader_B008SRISGU Adam Howell

I believe some games, like kid Icarus: uprising, that require you to move with your right hand whilst controlling the stylus are next to impossible for them to play without a second joystick. At least I know someone who could only play it with attachment. It seems to be a far bigger deal with some games more than others. Metroid prime: hunters allowed people to move using the 4 buttons instead of the d pad to move so sometimes the devs create a work around.

          • Daniel Carvalho

In the end it all comes down to the games.

Anyway, the probability of Nintendo announcing a 3DS with two analogs is close to zero, as they already said they wouldn’t be doing that for the reasons above. I feel sorry for the left handed players, but the accessory is there for sale if they feel the need.

        • Nintenjoe82

It’s not the main reason but Nintendo love making new bundles and SKUs and might still make it just because they know it would sell to people like me that haven’t really thought through why they want it :)

          • Daniel Carvalho

I don’t knwo about that. They only made those bundles with the Wii Remote Plus because it’s necessary for a lot of games now, and they had to make sure people would be able to play games were it is needed (they don’t even sell the old type anymore).
The Circle Pad Pro is an optional accessory for every game it is usable, which are only a few. Nintendo isn’t really going to bother doing a bundle for it unless they launch a game that needs the two analogs.

    • Daniel Carvalho

Seriously people, that’s not gonna happen! There are millions of 3DSs out there, all of them without a second analog stick; and way too many games that don’t require or even utilize it.

If they were to start selling a console with 2 analogs, developers would have to start making games around it, what would probably change their schedule on 1st party development sections (remember how A Link Between Worlds had to be changed taking in consideration the 2DS?); people who already own a 3DS would be left aside, as most games from there on would need the accessory or would have to buy the new model, the later resulting in all that stress to transfer data from one console to another, but being rather unfair having that bulky thing on your 3DS while new players have it integrated on their console with naturalness. “If Nintendo is the kind of company that does that to their consumers, then I’d rather stop consuming their products!” is what most 3DS owners will start to think if Nintendo does that. And there’s always the possibility that it just stands there, with no purpose for 90% of the games, just like the accessory doesn’t work for most games now.

There’s simply no need of a 3DS with two analog sticks now. If developers can’t make a game run on it without the need of one, then it’s the developers fault. If they make a game that runs differently with the accessory on, then it’s all fine because you have the choice. Games released for the 3DS will base themselves off the 3DS design and what is available for it. Don’t expect a Nintendo portable with two analog sticks until the successor for the 3DS, and don’t hold off buying it simply because of that.

    • Guest

*For some reason, my comment got deleted or not even posted*

Seriously, don’t expect that to happen. It would affect Nintendo negatively, giving the impression they don’t care for their consumers: there are millions of 3DSs out there, with thousands of games that don’t need or even recognize the Circle Pad Pro Games are made based off on what is available for the 3DS, not what it lacks. Surely you have games like Kid Ikarus and Monster Hunter 3G, that work with the accessory, but it’s not something needed in order to fully enjoy the game.

The accessory isn’t like the Wii Motion Plus, the 3DS isn’t a controller, it’s not gonna start selling with a second analog simply because there’s an accessory for it that adds one. The 3DS is a console, players would have to buy a new one if they wanted the games that would come out for it, and they would have to go through the stress of transferring data and accounts.

Nintendo already said they are not making it. Possibly the successor of the 3DS will have two analogs, but right now, it’s not what Nintendo should and could be focusing on.

  • Aleks

Ofcourse there will be. Iwata speaks to investors on the 21st sooo the big N will definitely have to spin some sort of good news around the date. Presumably before it.

    • darkcreap

I guess he will have to. He promised to have a total install base of 9 million consoles and he hasn’t made it by a far amount. The PS4 and the XboxOne are pushing hard, so I guess he has to in order to hype people and satisfy investors.

As a Nintendo fan, I am expecting more announcements. And I would like to know not only about games we know are coming, but also about unannounced games.

  • darkcreap

It fits. Last year, Nintendo announced a lot of games at the end of January to hype for the rest of the year. I expect something similar, especially since we are going to see a lot of games this year. As I said in a previous comment in another item of news here: DK, Watchdogs, Bayonetta, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Yarn Yoshi, SMT/Fire Emblem, X (maybe), Zelda (maybe), Miyamoto’s new IP (maybe).

And if we got some other surprise, all the better.

  • D.M.T

I don’t wanna be an asshole but Wii U Daily is very late on some of these Wii U news and rumors. I read this rumor on 3 Nintendo sites already.

    • Christopher Acuna

I didn’t…so…they are doing fine for me.

  • Super Mattio

F Zero fans, please connect to this link and and sign the petition. Who knows, we can dream! http://www.change.org/petitions/f-zero-wii-u

  • Nintedward

Maybe they might do some like live Nintendo direct with an a press audience! Would be like their own personal E3, who knows. All I know is Nintendo have a lot of content to show off so we’re 99% definitely going to get a direct like last years this month.

    • Fred

Well maybe not quite like last year’s. Probably as many games, but probably not as many games that we didn’t know about. Last year was epic! I was especially blown away by X. I’m hoping for a release slot to be announced. I’d love to hear Q2 2014

      • Nintedward

You just never know. I expect them to fully unveil SMT X FE and Yarn yoshi, fully Unveil X with a title and release window and just many more astonishing things. + A load of new titles, some huge. Think like a new exclusive kid icarus for Wiiu or something like that! Who knows.

        • D.M.T

This is off topic but you told me to add you to my Wii U friend list and I did add you but you never accepted my friend request lol. That was over a month ago. Don’t tell me to add you if you’re not gonna accept my friend request. Just saying.

          • Nintedward

Hey bro! I apologize for tthat, I’ve been playing my Wiiu offline for two months now because I recently moved into a new flat/apartment!!! My internet isn’t up and running yet, I currently have my Laptop connected to some free Wifi from a Cafe that is near my flat :) .

My PS4 has barely been online at all either, just been playing AC4 offline on it and Fifa local multiplayer, and on Wiiu been playing 3D world amongst other games offline :/ .

As soon as I have my own connection, I will add you! Promise. I’ve been using Miiverse on web browser for the last couple of months…

          • D.M.T

Oh ok I understand but the friend request already expired. The Wii U gives you 30 days to respond, after that it expires. I’ll have to add you again but let me know when you have your own connection.

          • Nintedward

Will do bro! I’ve already added a few good people off this site and you are certainly another I would like to add. I can connect my wiiu to my Samsung galaxy but its really slow and uses up all my mobile data usage which I need for browsing on the go.

          • sharlo galmo

If you got room, add me when you got internet, or i add you, what is your account name?

        • Fred

If only they had several more development studios I would feel like I could expect a few more new title announcements
Although it sounds like Kamiya is really pushing for a Wonderful 102

      • Jelle Knibbe

Q2? Not happening! I’d be surprised if it even comes out this year!

        • Fred

Hey, I said I’m hoping not I’m expecting. But why are you so sure. Xenoblade was done back in 2010. Couldn’t Monolith Soft have done this one in 4 years???

          • Jelle Knibbe

I just don’t want people to get dissapointed, you know:)

          • Fred

            I hear ya

    • That guy who hates Spike

I don’t know if theyll be able to do another press conference like the one they did in September.2012
According to Rich (Formerly on IGN, now working for Nintendo). People were booing and hissing at Reggie.

  • Fred

Of coarse they will release their earnings financial report on the 29th and there will be a Nintendo Direct around that same time. Last year the Nintendo Direct was a few days before (it came on Jan 23,2013) so I expect to have one within 2 weeks

  • Jack5221

Press conferences is not really Nintendos thing. A Nintendo direct sometime this month though seems very possible!

  • Michael Hancock

Wow, homeboy has 2 copies of Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls!

    • Rick Valenta

Shoot. Posted before I saw this. Thought that was pretty funny myself…

  • BIG Franky

I gotta believe that there will be a Nintendo Direct this month… remember last January’s ND? there were lots of very exciting announcements for Wii U… I am guessing they do something similar. lots of open-ended announcements that need to be tied-up with a release date, or at least an update.

    • Nintedward

We still know nothing about Yarn yoshi, SMt X FE and X . Surely they will HAVE to unveil these games soon…. This is what makes me think they have a direct coming this month, with some major, new 3DS and Wiiu announcements that we don’t have a clue about!

      • Peter Parker

More Wii U announcements than 3DS games, the Wii U really needs it.

        • Virus6

I think they could coast through 2014 with just the current slated 3DS titles and be just fine. The Wii U desperately needs everything it can

      • Leo

I’m starting to worry about Yarn Yoshi since it has been almost one year since the last time we had a glimpse of it… i hope they kept working on it during the entire year of 2013 because this game is one of the great games i’m anticipating for 2014.

      • John Kinsley

I NEED YARN YOSHI, OH YEAH I SHOULD MAKE ANOTHER BULLSHIT ARTICLE THAT MAKES ALL OF YOU WANT TO LEAVE YOU TRY WRITING ARTICLES ITS HARD FUCK YOU ALL, *PEACE*

    • Josiah Parsons

he said “new” in a noncommittal way. Maybe an old franchise, new game?
Who wants Metroid on the 3DS?

      • JuleyJules

Wii U needs a Metroid game more than 3DS. 3DS will be fine with just a few games released throughout the year beyond what’s already announced. Wii U needs lots of big games to either come out if they’re announced previously or be announced for later in the year and into 2015.

        • C4

Why not both? 2D-style Metroid for 3DS; Prime-style Metroid for Wii U.

I don’t expect less then one Metroid per platform. If they want it they can do it :)

          • JuleyJules

Yes there could be both but the Wii U one needs to come out first. The Wii U needs all the help it can get. Nothing wrong with having a 3DS game too but 3DS owners who don’t own a Wii U yet might be inclined to buy one if there is no Metroid game on their platform at that time.

        • Josiah Parsons

Very true. I don’t own a 3DS but I’m happy to see Metroid wherever it is. I’m really hoping for a Wii U Metroid.
Don’t shoot me, but Prime Hunters is my favorite Metroid game so far just for the multiplayer. it would be sooo much better on Wii U or even 3DS.

      • Zac Alias

Apparently this was tweeted not long ago either, maybe its this?:

Today, all publishing rights for Moon are 100% officially Renegade Kid’s. Feels good! :)

      • Christopher Acuna

        I don’t. I want it on Wii U :)

        • Grendelmon

          Ditto. HD Metroid… :homer drool:

    • alex toschi

So because there was a big NintendoDirect event last year in the same month, that automatically means there will be another this year? your setting yourself up for failure my friend, that’s crazy to assume they would do another huge reveal just because it’s the same time last year.

      • Laud

Well, they usually have their conference with investors around this time. That’s usually why they bring out the big guns, to show the investors that they’ve got what people want and that they should continue to invest.

    • Squid

Last month was exciting too, but I’d like to see what’s up for 2014 and 2015 (yes I’ll look that far into the future)

    • Magnus Eriksson

Looking forward to see what lies they will tell this time :)

      • Nintenjoe82

        Yarn Starfox vs. 1080` Waverace

        • BIG Franky

          LOL… Yarn Star Fox….. I’m in, LOL….

        • Magnus Eriksson

          Zelda Kart and Paper Metroid?

          • Nintenjoe82

the sad thing is that they will both outsell X and SMT vs FE :)

      • Nintenjoe82

Actually I know this one, Miyamoto’s new IP

….possibly a Game of Thrones licence with it.

    • makkan

I hope they will include the reumagined thing on that nintendo direct.
      If it exists.

    • Nintenjoe82

There’s a Nintendo Direct for Korea this week so I’m fairly confident

    • SkateRyan

Yeah, that sounds logical. If I remember correctly, they used it as a bit of a primer for what they announced and confirmed at E3 last year, right?

  • Nostalgic_Chaos

He’s just talking about a Nintendo Direct. I don’t think it’s going to be anything more.

  • verymetal

Two words for you all…Cranky Kong!

  • Flawless Victory

I would think they would, because if they didn’t this would go down as a wasted month for Nintendo to make big announcements that could help the Wii U’s perception. And they would lose a little momentum they gained during the holidays last year which would be uncool. I just don’t want to see Nintendo flop again when it comes to marketing their games….just don’t. Every game that is announced this year and beyond…they need to be on top of everything every step of the way.

  • Petri

Better have solid release date for Bayonetta 2.
Some new and exciting announcements would be welcome as well.

  • Kyle

I just want pokemon bank to be released

  • Flawless Victory

I am still waiting for a re-release of Bayonetta to the Nintendo Eshop if nothing else.

    • BIG Franky

      not gonna happen….

    • lonewolf

Or just include it with the game disck of Bayoneta 2 that way we will have. 2 games for a price of one.

  • alex toschi

The high assumptions in the comment sections worries me. You all did the same thing about the VGX awards. You did the same with the December direct, and a lot of you were disappointed. Why not just enjoy your damn system and your video games and wait patiently for what you want on the system? You don’t even know if they will ever make a new Metroid, or a new Star Fox, or a Majora’s mask 3D remake. Just enjoy what you play, and get excited for what you KNOW is being released.

    • Flawless Victory

Nobody is expecting those games to be announced, but Nintendo is in NO POSITION to be passive especially this year. They are going to have to give some dates or announce something meaningful.

      • alex toschi

I can respect that, I definitely think they need to get up and make the Wii U a must have console. You are still making an assumption that they will give dates this January, when in all honesty it makes much more sense to do it at E3.

        • Flawless Victory

They don’t have to reveal everything , but they need to make some announcements. You really think people are going to wait until May and June for Nintendo to make their move? That would be so stupid..lol. The Wii U is going to hurt so bad, and all the focus is going to be on the other consoles while the whole gaming industry bashes the Wii U like they are doing now just much worse. Nintendo has to set the tone…that’s all I want to see.

          • alex toschi

Or they could save any huge release dates for June, and steal E3 from both Microsoft and Sony. Imagine if they had release dates for every upcoming game, new gameplay videos, maybe a few new game releases? I would rather them save it for E3. Nintendo could destroy that show, Microsoft and Sony pretty much have there 2014 already panned out but there are so many Nintendo games we haven’t heard much about yet, and some that are being developed that we don’t even know about yet.

        • BIG Franky

well FWIW, there is a pretty good chance that both Mario Kart and Bayonetta 2 are released BEFORE this years E3, so there are at least a few titles that they can probably give us release dates for… but yeah, I wouldn’t plan on release dates for X, SSB, or anything else…. but a few new looks at some of these games would go a long way toward generating some much needed BUZZ… :)

    • NkoSekirei

i didnt watch the video game awards anyways cause it sucks and i knew nintendo wasnt gonna announce anything big on the show.

      • alex toschi

I watched it haha, and it was a massive waste of my time. I really hope this is the last one.

    • Christopher Acuna

It’s cause we all know the great possibilities that nintendo can offer us all, so that’s we all get hyped lol. Hell I knew the VGX announcement was going to be Donkey Kong but I was still excited for the possibility of it being something else amazing that we have all been waiting for.

      • alex toschi

Haha I know, I’m a victim of the hype train myself. It just pisses me off to see the nintendoom comments and the massive disappointment from people during the live stream chats because they bring themselves up to these massive amounts of hype only to then bad mouth nintendo and say they are doing it wrong, that Iwata should lose his job. It’s like they go from children before christmas to disappointed business analyst. It’s ridiculous and these people need to stop.

  • Rick Valenta

2 Copies of Iggy’s Wreckin’ Balls! No way brah!!!!

  • Justagamer

I feel 2014 will be a great year for Wii U and 3DS. and tomarrow the Eshop gets another great game..Unepic!

    • Michael Hancock

      Wow, how epic.

      • Justagamer

        Yes it is…:)

  • NkoSekirei

at e3 nintendo is going to reveal the game we all been waiting to see the new HD legend of zelda for the wii u thats gonna be epic

  • Arthur Jarret

There WILL be a press release at the end of this month… just like last year. There will be the quarterly financial meeting and subsequent Q&A – which is always very revealing.

  • Nintenjoe82

There’s a Nintendo Direct for Korea this week so I’m fairly confident.

  • Patrick Starman

    Get your body ready.

  • I am Error.

Yes, at which time Nintendo will guarantee the Virtual Console release of SMB3 by the end of 2018.

  • Mario 1983

    This is Wii U’s year.

  • LordiMcKill

I just hope they finally give the Circle Pad Pro some love, that thing for me was only used for 1 game in my library and nothing more. Granted there are a few games out there that do support it but its not a lot.

  • Ricky__Spanish

A straffe button would be much better than crappy Turok controls

  • leo

    ehhh

  • http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008SRISGU#reader_B008SRISGU Adam Howell

Nintendo needs to really wow us. Not just another very good game. I want something ground breaking to remind me why they’re the best.

  • Mario 1983

Wii U Virtual Reality helmet please, something a little better than Virtual Boy.

  • C.S. Bailey

New FPS….. give me a price and we’ll talk.

  • FutureFox

If the press release is a Nintendo Direct I would not expect it to contain earth-shattering news. More DKCTF videos some SMB details that’s already on the web, an added nod to Bravely Default with Reggie adding he hopes you’ve had a chance to download it. The rest of the direct will be indie titles.

    • TrueWiiMaster

To be fair, at last year’s January Nintendo Direct they announced X, SMT x FE, Yoshi’s Yarn, and Wind Waker HD. They also announced that they were bringing both N64 and GBA games to the VC, and making Miiverse for smartphones. I doubt this year’s would be as amazing, but I’d expect a few surprises.

      • TalesOfBS

A year later and no N64 VC. And nothing about SMTxFE.

    • Grendelmon

I hope that you’re wrong, but you’re probably right. :-

  • TalesOfBS

Guess what they are releasing in January? fucking nothing.
DKC is coming only in 21 February. Almost march! More than a month away. And after that what we are getting? Nothing again for probably 2 fucking months.

They have a lot of Wii/GC gems that could get some treatment and be released in HD for the Wii U to fill those gaps, but guess what? Nintendo is acting blind and stupid again, exactly like they did past year.

I want to buy some Wii games i missed but because they are out of print, the only option left now is to pay for a overpriced copy on ebay. (Or pirate it.)

The fuck is wrong with them.

    • TrueWiiMaster

Guess what anyone’s releasing in January? A Tomb Raider remake for the PS4 and Xbox One. That’s it. February? The PS4 and Xbox One are getting Thief, a Rayman Legends port, and the LEGO movie game (which is also coming to Wii U). Q1 isn’t generally the busiest time of year.

And what Wii games are you talking about? Only a small handful of Wii games got expensive. Almost all of them can be bought for under $30.

    • Grendelmon

      Fucking really?

  • TrueWiiMaster

Honestly, I’m surprised Nintendo hasn’t announced a Nintendo Direct yet. As of right now, only one new game has been announced (recently) for 2014, and that’s Hyrule Warriors. Nintendo almost certainly has more games on the way, as well as details about Mario Kart, SSB, Bayonetta, Yoshi’s Yarn, X, and SMT x FE, plus the many eshop games that are supposed to be coming out in the next few months. There was also that free-to-play Wii U Steel Diver, and Miyamoto’s new project, and we’re still waiting on N64 and GBA games to come to the VC (hopefully Gamecube games too).

  • readypembroke

From that picture all I got to say is that he has one hell of a game library!

  • Leo

Nintendo definitely needs to invest heavily on marketing this year. Nintendo Directs are clearly not enough and their main concern should be the mainstream media.

  • Fuzunga

Those controls sound terrible. I remember playing an FPS on the PSP with controls like that, and let’s just say there’s a reason the Vita has two sticks.

I’m all for a first person game on the 3DS, but why can’t it use the touch screen? Metroid worked out pretty well like that.

  • John Kinsley

yay the john kinsley wav uf disliks

  • Shota

it doesn’t have to be something big. maybe some indie games or new playable demo of donkey kong or mario kart 8

  • darkcreap

Yep, very likely scenario. Better not get overhyped. It leads to frustration afterwards.

  • Shota

you took the words right out of my mouth :D
