Super Mario 3D World has been nominated for a GDC Game of the Year award.

super-mario-9

It looks like the Game Developers Conference awards have selected Super Mario 3D World as one of the nominees for its Game of the Year award. This award series happens every year in San Francisco at GDC, a conference dedicated to developers and celebrating their successes. The nominees for Game of the Year are as follows:

Game of the Year
Gone Home (The Fullbright Company)
Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar North/Rockstar Games)
The Last Of Us (Naughty Dog/Sony)
Super Mario 3D World (Nintendo EAD Tokyo/Nintendo)
Tomb Raider (Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix)

Super Mario 3D World will be facing some stiff competition. The Nintendo 3DS title The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds also received an honorable mention for the game of the year category. You can view all the awards nominees here.

  • NkoSekirei

super mario 3d world is one of the best wii u games out there and amazing graphics as well

  • Ocio Aguilera

It’s all about power… the power of hardware (Sony & Microsoft) Versus the power of creativity. Always proud of Nintendo

    • Mario

For me, it’s about been the most fun.

    • RyuNoHadouken

The Last of Us was way more creative than Mario 3D World…the awesome graphics was just a big plus

      • Rinslowe

TLOU is absolutely a beautiful game. Even easier to appreciate it’s quality as it released only a few good months before the cusp of a new generation. But the experience is highly localised, IMO. Where Mario’s equaled beauty comes from is in it’s ability to pull you in together with others, for a combined experience. And it’s not too shabby from a technical standpoint either…
Both have their positives and both are highly creative experiences.

        • Ocio Aguilera

          agree!!!

  • Aurélien Gibert

    Awesome news !
Gone Home and Tomb Raider are great games, but should not be Game Of The Year. After all, GOTY should be the game that most of us will think about when talking about gaming in 2013. Considering this, Gone Home and Tomb Raider wont be “that” memorable. I think The Last of Us or GTA V will win…

    • Graeme Lynch

Tomb Raider redefined the franchise and is one of few games to have a strong female protagonist. It is much more worthy of GOTY than GTA V.

      • Epleguy

So what if it has a female protagonist?

        • Graeme Lynch

My point being is that few games have female protagonists in them which have no need for males. I think it is a positive thing to have such games out there. Diversify and equality and all.

  • abe

it’ll be GTA as it wasn’t exclusive

  • RyuNoHadouken

i doubt it will win, but good luck

  • Mr. Berzerk

Don’t get me wrong. I lovee SMB3dW, but I didn’t find it especially beter than other mario jumpers.

    • Jason

Yeah, great game I definitely enjoyed it, but it was way too easy, you could get all 380 stars in a day. Also it’s a little ridiculous for them to only put ONE difficult level within 11 worlds (Champions Road), like c’mon it’s a Mario game.

      • Yousif Alromaithi

One day that is impossible unless you are pro. I managed to finish it two days, Anyone can do it in one day I mean lol no way.

        • Jason

If you’re really that skeptical, buy me a capture card and give me $20 and I’ll make a video of me beating it in a day again. You’re exaggurating a lot, you don’t have to be pro by any means to speedrun a 2013 Mario game.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

I aint buying you a shit i am not your mom.

      • Wighead

In a day if you take 10 coffee and play for 24 hours strait maybe…

    • Donaald

This is judged from a developing point of view, not a gamer point of view.

    • Mario

But you still love it regardless.

  • gamesplayswill

No Arkham Origins?! *Rage. Escapes life by exiting to Windows. Logs off*

    • Virus6

Arkham City was better in every way. Therefore I completely agree that it isn’t GOTY material

      • YayGs

Agreed, it’s the weakest of the Series. Next time Rocksteady creates an amazing title and then another studio picks it up, I’ll be far more cautious.

    • Donaald

Yeah, because an almost broken game deserves a GDC award.

      • gamesplayswill

No, the game had/has a FEW bugs. That is it. Besides, they are planning on patches anyway. And PLEASE don’t act like no other game has had bugs. Even a few Nintendo games did.

        • Donaald

Am I acting like no other game had bugs? Besides, no Nintendo ever let me without 100 completion, I can’t finish this game because of the stupid data pack glitch, maybe the money you have grows in trees but if someone sells me a broken game I get pissed.

          • gamesplayswill

I had that happen to me too… sadly. Anyway, they will fix it, like I said. Sorry if I came off as an arse.

          • Donaald

            That’s cool, man.

  • Rinslowe

Mario’s definitely one of THE best experiences of 2013.

  • Flawless Victory

Loved every minute of this game.

  • Virus6

I really hate to say it, but even if Super Mario 3D World does deserve it (although in my opinion it does), there would be a lot of pressure to choose the more popular game. It happens all of the time. Eurogamer named Mario as GOTY and the comment section had a meltdown.

    • readypembroke

Looking at the comments at that article. Everybody crapping their pants and saying Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us should be their game of the year. Most of the anti-Nintendo comments has more dislikes than likes.

      • Virus6

It’s funny to just see how many “Low score hidden” stuff exists on that comment section. Most of those comments are “Nintendo paid them off” or “!#@$ you $&!&@@ @$&%%^”

      • val berger

although I’m a Nintendo-lover I stuill wouldn’t be surprised if Last of Us or GTAV would grab the award as both are outstanding pieces of development work. So is Mario, in the end, all of them deserve it.

  • BIG Franky

The most deserving Title for GOTY is: The Last of Us…. BAR NONE and not even close. GTAV is impressive in some ways, but isn’t universally appealing because of the nature of the game….. SM3DW probably comes in 2nd place but its a distant second behind TLOU….

  • harelsen

I personally don’t like the main characters of the last of us. That alone was a huge downfactor for me (how Joel was a huge self centric psychopath!) . The graphics looked great tho. the gameplay was lacking innovation and was straight out boring in the long run. for me, it was another bloody uncharted game! you go into a room and there is a small army you have to take out and then you enter another one and there’s another army (resident evil 4 did a better job here). :L

The gameplay was boring and repetitive, and i’m glad i completed it, so i don’t have to boot it up again!

“The Last of Us was widely lauded by critics. It received critical
acclaim for its writing, voice acting, sound design, level design, and
art direction. The game’s narrative was praised for its charecterization, application of subtext, and critical depiction of the human condition, dealing with themes of sacrifice, loyalty, fate, and hope”
    no gameplay mentioned tho…

Would be more fitting as an animated movie, atleast then, they (naughty dog) would spare me all the generic shooting and or occasional stealthing…

All in all, not worth 60 bloody dollars!

    -old naughty dog fan

    • me

R u seriouse? No innovation in gameplay? What about clickers??? Theyre so hard to kill, qnd could detect you only by sound…that alone is innovative. No other zombie games makes you strategize your every move like the last of us. But you not liking the main characters is a matter of opinion. But u cant say that the game had no innovation, cuz it did. Wether u like the innovation or not is up to you, but dont trynto disprove a fact.

      • Nintenjoe82

enemies that use sound as their only way of detecting you is nothing new.

        • Agent721

Jumping on an enemy to squash him or throwing fire at him is nothing new. We’ve been doing this for three decades now. Neither is the Tanouki Suite. Criticize fairly and evenly folks!

      • harelsen

Now you listen here you moronic marauder! i don’t like you and i suppose you don’t like me. Moreover, your comment was invalid and unwitty! The video game industry have been around for decades and you don’t think something like this already exist?

Naughty dog abandon their dreams as game developers after Jak 3 and jumped on “the bloody fps genre” (that envelops almost the entire video game industry!) abandoning almost all hope of creative gameplay!

Yet one does not care for the silly fun games like catherine, which actually brought great innovation and completely new game mechanics to the video game industry.

But that doesn’t matter, does it now? as long as we got COD, TLOU and The Avengers. Entertainment that was made to please everyone!

Run along now and watch a bloody movie! instead of founding shit like cod and other miscellaneous crap that is all the same…

    • Nintenjoe82

So true about LoU not being rated for gameplay. To be fair I enjoyed the gameplay because I thought it was pretty tight for a PS3 game but you know something is up when reviewers only talk about non game factors like emotions. GTAV was a shock to me because the reviews led me to believe it would be a massive improvement over IV and the PS3 version I have was another slow clunky slog of a GTA game saved by a huge amount of content.
Wind Waker or Deus Ex have been my GOTY. At least 2014 will be tough for me to choose between Mario Kart and hopefully X or something else cool.

      • Agent721

You guys sound like total Nintendo fanboys…LoUS not that great? GTAV a slog? Ridiculous! I love Super Mario 3D world a ton, but the other two are just as good. I have beaten them all but 3D world (on the last world now) and I can say I had a great time with each. And the gameplay was fine…Last of Us gameplay was a hybrid of many games, with Arkham Asylum/Arkham City being the most comparable in terms of sneaking around, joel’s listening mechanic being like Batman’s detective vision and the controls being like Uncharted.

Last of Us is a great game. GTAV is a great game. Super Mario 3D world is truly a sequel to Mario 64 and copies much of the gameplay…how come it doesn’t get criticized? Even the warp zones are in the same place as SMB1. I’m not criticizing that design choice, I’m simply pointing out that the gameplay in Super Mario 3D world was great, but nothing innovative either.

        • Nintenjoe82

I never said LoU was not great. I disagreed with the original post and said the gameplay was tight. I just hate the reviews because they make out that the game is great because of the story when the real greatness was the combo of graphics and gameplay.

GTAV isn’t a total slog (it’s one of the best games ever) but LoU shits all over its gameplay and the hype behind GTAV makes it sound like it was as groundbreaking as GTA3. My point was that every review that says LoU is the greatest barely talks about how tight and refined the gameplay is. The fact they managed to make a game so beautiful that handles so well is what makes LoU a great game. The story might be emotive and thought provoking but it is only a story.

3D World is awesome but overhyped. I love it but it is more like NSMBU than 64 and the good stuff is almost completely absent from the main game and all in the secret levels. I was one of the few who said it will be awesome based purely on the dev team and I feel vindicated but the surrounding hype that came with the reviews made me expect more than it was.

    • Agent721

Why would you complete a game that was a “slog”?

  • NkoSekirei

i have to disagree with you dude did u forget about smash bros, possibly X,watch dogs, and probably unannounced titles that would be shown future directs and the reveal of zelda hd at e3 im pretty much sure their going to be alot of good games coming to the wii u this year.Super mario 3d world is beyond decent its amazing especially some of the levels that actually bring the difficulty to the extreme on some levels i mean i know many people that played died alot on those hard levels and some ragequit and sold their game over that which its stupid but manage to get through it with wat little patience i had left after losing half my life.I think delaying mario kart 8 for this year was a good thing cause it would give them more time to polish it and add more stuff which they alrdy shown us in trailers thats why a rush game will always be a bad game and nintendo does not want to do that to its gamer base.

    • RoboticLink

That’s really strange… Why do these comments all have either close to 260 upvotes or 260 downvotes? Is there something wrong with Disqus or is someone just liking and hating on peoples comments a bunch of times? And the more you go down, it seems that there are one or two less likes or dislikes for each comment. It seems this is the doing of hackers. Is that normal Wii U Daily?

    • Mario

      Ohh! So true!

    • http://wiiudaily.com/ Monomon

265 Dislikes!!???PatcherStation, probably.Never seen so many dislikes in my entire life ! O_O

      • NkoSekirei

it seems trolls dont like facts they need to get a life

  • Leo

SM3DW is a masterpiece, the type of game that grabs you by the head and won’t let you go. GTAV is very nice but it gets a bit boring after a while, the over use of bad language gets tired, so i haven’t finished it, though i will take some time to complete it all.

    • Mario

It’s still not ready to let me go just yet. Becuse I’m just getting started.

  • simkenno

This may sound crazy, but I keep replaying levels over and over before I progress to a new world because I don’t want the game to end I love it that much. ☺:)

    • Mario

I’m sure not gonna stop playing it any day now.

  • readypembroke

Would be super cool if DLC was available for Super Mario 3D World.

  • Patrick Starman

I want to see 3D World win for the sake of laughing at all the butthurt fanboys who are upset that their favorite game didn’t win.

  • Patrick Starman

    Am I just seeing things?
Or are people’s comments getting hundreds of dislikes.

    • Mario

      Hackers man. Really annoying hackers.

  • TCar

Play my Wii U everyday, no dusting needed here!

  • Forbsz

    Who is mass disliking comments?

    • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

      Probably a hacker

  • iamserious

Looks like someone hated disque enough to hack into it and express themselves…

  • Donaald

So you’re the bitchfag who hacked the downvotes button.

    • Yousif Alromaithi

Hacked the up votes what do you expect from a Sony fan.

  • Dj

Sooooo, you hacked into the downvotes to get the top comment so you could try to rip on Nintendo. On top of that, you’re named after Pacher, which is already bad enough. What a way waste time from your life.

  • Rinslowe

The science guys have been up to this for a while now…. Serial Downvoting websites and trolling their user base.

  • Kyle

Graphically, this game should win. It was Soooo beautiful. The Last of Us should NOT win that category. GTA V was nice but it wasn’t very unique.

    • Mario

      And gameplay wise.

  • Mario

Seriously? No game at all? Not even X?

  • Agent721

GTAV, Last of Us & Super Mario 3D World…my top 3 in no particular order. GTAV delivers the most amazing open world experience since Red Dead Redemption, Last of Us delivered an excellent story & stunning graphic, Super Mario 3D world delivered the most fun of any game this year. All are equally satisfying. They are the Games of the Year.

  • Rabbi Bongstien

Dude, that’s awesome that they’ve been making games for over 30 years now and they are still being recognized for their work. Only developers with multiple games in the same categories except for Sony with killzone and tearaway which I wish I had the money to justify getting a vita just to play those games. I’m excited t see what they do with the Wii U in 2014

  • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

This comment will get upvotes or downvotes for no reason.

    • Sdudyoy

It will get downvotes for a reason, it will get them for being a spam comment.

      • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

Don’t worry, it will probably get at least 260 upvotes or downvotes from that hacker who is messing with the comment system. Did you notice most comments have at least 260 upvotes or downvotes ? This isn’t normal if you ask me.

        • Sdudyoy

No I didn’t notice, I’m sorry for being a jerk without knowing why you made that comment.

  • Cdwoods

Remember people, if a comment has 260 dislikes, it’s a positive comment, other way around, it’s anti Nintendo, opinion is normal.

  • Richard Branches

Oh my god!! how come the eshop is not available outside of the United States!! or at least not in my country (Colombia) I’m soooo disapointed, I just bought the basic console with a hard disc attached to it and I wanted to buy all the games I want on the eshop instead of a physical disc!!

  • Flawless Victory

I see more hacking from that troll. Haters gonna hate….keep hating haters…that’s pretty much all you can do.

  • Nintenjoe82

If Mario Kart was finished it would have been out last year. Nintendo aren’t stupid. MKW sold over 30M units and was the biggest system seller after Wii Sports. It has been the saviour of their other two poor performing consoles. NSMBU was Nintendo’s ‘oh shit we need an HD game’ game. SM3DW was their ‘ok we know what we’re doing now’ game. They would have launched with Mario Kart if they could, it will be the game to guarantee the Gamecube levels of sales. Hopefully something else will bring them up to more respectable levels..

  • Josie the Sketcher

Finally hearing some really positive about the Wii U. I am so sick and frustrated of all this negative stuff the media is putting out. Everyday I google Wii U and find mainly bad news. I’m starting to be ashamed of also being a Sony fan because of all their ignorant fanboys bashing this unique console. Super Mario 3D World definitely deserves to win!

  • InterTreble

This is exactly what we said when this game came out. It’s the killer app which has made a great Christmas for Nintendo. Quality emerged, at the end. Nintendo is a pure distiller of quality. GTA V, The Last of Us and Super Mario 3D World are the best 3 games of 2013 for more or less all the magazines, websites, etc. It’s a glorious result, indeed.

  • GABRIEL GARCIA

Can we vote ?? If so I will give my vote to Mario 3d and Zelda of course !!

  • devmiles

cool game, yes! very cool game, yes! … game of the year.. absolutely not

  • Will (ishigum)

No matter what game gets picked for GOTY people will complain and whine. Best to just ignore the naysayers.

  • Shota

db finalbout was the only must have for me to get a ps1

  • Fierce-Deity Link

actually, i am pretty sure the 64 was more powerful but was limited because nintendo used cartridges as opposed to CDs

  • Kev

I would put Final Fantasy VII right up there with the best N64 games as a must have title.

  • Mario

Most of those games are true gaming masterpieces.

  • Shota

tomb raider deaths was so gory. but an awesome game nevertheless

  • Wayne Beck

Still haven’t played through GTAV yet, but if most of the game is anything like the first 3 missions, it does not bode well for me.

  • Virus6

Didn’t people have the same opinion of GTAIV? After all was said and done, they finally realized that it wasn’t the greatest game ever. GTAV will more than likely fall into the same category.

  • ~OMEGA~

last of us was great but not a lot of replay-ability, tomb raider i’m surprised to see nominated, this i feel is more of a battle between Gta V and Supermario 3d world

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

im just glad my words has spread the internet :)

  • Magnus Eriksson

Mario 3D World is EASY the most fun game I have played in years. I dont think it will win because of the hype of others, but it surely deserves to win. Its Mario gaming at its best. No Mario game since M64 have been this fun-good. No need to say more.

  • Googs

WTF is up with the dislikes?

  • Shota

    yeah 64bit vs 32bit right?

  • RyuNoHadouken

it was more powerful…idk why all the down votes

  • ShilaquilOneal

Only awesome if you think QTE’s are awesome. Tomb Raider ended on a sour note because of them. In terms of GAMEPLAY off course.

Not sure if the developers @ the conference will take that into account.

Some games on the list, when stripped from their godhead plotlines and “they look like clones of Hollywood actor/actress” characters, they are just games that have a bunch of set-pieces tied together with in-game cutscenes. Which is not exactly GOTY material. Since that type of scripted gameplay is overused and definitely not innovative or original.

  • Petri

    Definitive Edition.
    It has more QTE’s.

  • Guest

    N64 was 64bit and PS1 was 128bit

  • RyuNoHadouken

    precisely

  • Fierce-Deity Link

    exactly :3

  • Shota

    lol

  • thedeciderU

ps1 was 32 bit and was released in 1995 in the u.s.). dreamcast was 128 bit and was released in 1999 (in the u.s.).

  • Decker Shado

I haven’t gotten to play V yet – still holding out for a PC port at least. But I’ve been playing the hell out of SA and IV recently. More SA, because… well… there’s just so damn much to it!

I’m curious if they added the rpg-esque stats and skills back in 5.. I know they’re missing in IV, and it’s one of the things I like the most about San Andreas.

  • Michael DeVore

    @disqus_mKHiM738lu:disqus @jjbredesen:disqus
The bit labeling lost meaning in that era.

Most games for the N64 only utilized 32bit instructions. We know this because the N64 emulators on 32bit systems don’t run accost the 64bit instructions very often. If they ran into them frequently the emulators wouldn’t have worked properly until everyone upgraded to AMD64.

Game programmers in particular tend to have a problem with code beyond 32bits. They have a bad habit of converting 64bit numbers into 32bit numbers which can result in your code crashing.

Everything after the 32bit era switched focus to the GPU since minimal improvement was being made in the CPU range. We are only now starting to use 64 bit cpu code, and that’s only because we want to use more memory than 4 Gigs. As a note that’s the primary difference between the CPU Architecture for the WiiU 32 bit RISC CPU vs PS4 and XBone with 64 bit CISC CPU.

@thedeciderU:disqus The Dreamcase CPU was the Hitachi SH4 and is a 32bit cpu. The 128 bit is in reference to its vector graphics engine, and not the CPU.

  • PachterStation

I wouldn’t say GTA 5 was boring, it was much better than GTA 4, which was a poor game. 3D World was an appealing game, but short levels and being virtually like the 3DS version, it just fell short.

  • tronic307

    Downvote hackers.

  • YayGs

    I’d agree.
I think GTA V is better than IV in a number of ways but both have an absurd amount of perfect scores. I think what those games do well is first impressions.

The first impressions that GTA V gave me were great and was giving me around a 9/10 feeling, but as I continued to play and get further into it it started dropping and is now around 7.5/10. I really like the influences it has from GTA SA, but there are a lot of missions that just aren’t that fun or no fun at all, like this one mission where you’re riding in a helicopter and your objective is to monitor this other person and while doing that there’s this long and boring conversation going on between you and the pilot, and it’s not a short mission either. It’s very dull and it’s the kind of mission that makes you think “Who thought that this would be fun?” And it’s not just that, there are a bunch of other things that make it a far less than perfect game.

It probably has to do with where Rockstar puts their emphasis on. But I suppose most people make their own fun in GTA, but that doesn’t make it a perfect game.

  • Mario

Well I just finished the first world. But from what I seen when playing so far, it is truly a really fun game.

  • Shota

what do you mean your word?

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

Well, i just said and spreaded, that the last of us was too movie, well i started it, not much, its not like i deserve a medal lol.

  • Shota

oh okay. i also thought it was kinda like a movie.

  • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

Well, most of those upvotes are guest votes and you can’t downvote as a guest, so either it’s a hack or a troll with 260 sock accounts and too much free time.

So you’re saying NintenScience and Truthteller are the same person. Unless that person attributes different behaviours and personalities to all his sock accounts, I really doubt it.

  • Decker Shado

Sweet, that’s good enough for me. :D

  • Fierce-Deity Link

damn.. first post and i get shat on by the community lol…
either way… glad i could clear things up : D
